The effects of endogenous mangrove litterfall (MF) inputs on organic matter transformation in sediment polluted by exogenous microplastics (MPs) were investigated in this work, and their linkage with microbial characteristics was also explored. MF inputs significantly affected organic carbon transformation in MPs-polluted sediment by improving humification, enzymatic activities and carbon utilisation capacity of microbes. Such effects were mainly linked with the enrichment of microbes responsible for organic substance decomposition induced by MF inputs. Indeed, MF addition increased the relative abundance of fermentation- and cellulysis-assoicated bacteria, together with Saprotrophic fungi. Moreover, dissolved matters derived from MF played a non-neglected role in regulating organic carbon transformation in MPs-polluted sediment. Besides, MF addition decreased the complexity of bacterial community network in MPs-polluted sediment but fungal community network became complicated. And the complexity of microbial network was MF amount-dependent. Even though stochastic process was dominated in sediment with or without MF, MF inputs enhanced the relative contribution of determinism and reduced the migration of microbial communities. Due to the widespread pollution, microplastics (MPs) have garnered increasing attention. Research has shown that MPs negatively affect many organisms. Microalgae are primary producers in aquatic environments and play a crucial role in the stability of aquatic ecosystems. However, research on the effects of MPs on microalgae is relatively limited. Haematococcus pluvialis is known for its ability to produce astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant, in response to environmental stress. MP exposure is also an environmental stressor, and we are curious whether MP stress will affect astaxanthin synthesis in H. pluvialis. To investigate the effects and mechanisms of MPs on H. pluvialis growth and astaxanthin synthesis, we exposed H. pluvialis to 5 μm polystyrene MPs at different concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10 mg/L) for 18 days, followed by high light induction of astaxanthin synthesis. Growth and photosynthesis-related indicators suggested that PS-MPs had a hormesis-like effect on H. pluvialis, with short-term exposure stimulating photosynthetic activity and growth, and long-term exposure inhibiting them. Morphological observations, oxidative stress markers, soluble proteins, and extracellular polymeric substance indicators showed that prolonged PS-MP exposure primarily disrupted the morphology and normal physiological functions of H. pluvialis by inducing oxidative stress. Although H. pluvialis actively resists the oxidative stress caused by PS-MPs, it cannot fully counteract the adverse effects. Prolonged PS-MP exposure ultimately resulted in reduced levels of photosynthetic pigments and inhibited photosynthetic activity, as well as the decreased expression of genes related to astaxanthin synthesis and reduced astaxanthin production. Integrated biomarker response analysis further indicated that the overall toxic effects of MPs on H. pluvialis exhibit a dose-dependent pattern. MP exposure potentially weakens the survival capability of H. pluvialis under adverse conditions. The increasing presence of oxytetracycline (OTC) in agricultural soils has raised global environmental concerns. We investigated the environmental behavior and fate of OTC in two types of tropical agricultural soils, focusing on the impact of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from biogas slurry. Techniques such as three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis) were used to explore the adsorption mechanisms. Our findings revealed that biogas slurry-derived DOM decreased the OTC adsorption on soils and extended the time to reach adsorption equilibrium. Specifically, the equilibrium adsorption of OTC by the two soils decreased by 19.41 and 15.32 %, respectively. These adsorption processes were effectively modelled by Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, linear, and Freundlich thermodynamic models. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that OTC adsorption onto soils was spontaneous and endothermic, with competitive interactions between biogas slurry-derived DOM and OTC molecules intensifying at higher DOM concentrations. The adsorption mechanisms were governed by both physical and chemical processes. Furthermore, the presence of Ca 2+ and Na + ions significantly inhibited OTC adsorption. Over the past decades, the accumulation of plastics in mangrove ecosystems has emerged as a significant environmental concern, primarily due to anthropogenic activities. Polypropylene (PP) films, one of the plastic types with the highest detection rate, tend to undergo intricate aging processes in mangrove ecosystems, leading to the release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) that may further influence the local bacterial communities. Yet, the specific effects of new and weathered (aged) plastic films and the associated leached DOM on bacterial consortia in mangrove sediments remain poorly understood. In this study, an incubation experiment was conducted to elucidate the immediate effects and mechanisms of the new and relatively short-term (45 or 90 days) aged PP films, as well as their leached DOM (PDOM), on characteristics of DOM and the bacterial community structure in mangrove sediments under different tidal conditions. Surface morphology and functional group analyses showed that both new and aged PP films exhibited comparable degradation profiles under different tidal conditions over the incubation period. As compared to the new PP film treatments, the introduction of the short-term aged PP films significantly affected the content of humic-like compounds in sediments, and such effects were partially ascribed to the release of PDOM during the incubation. Although the addition of PP films and PDOM showed minor effects on the overall diversity and composition of bacterial communities in the sediments, the abundance of some dominant phyla exhibited a growth or reduction tendency, possibly changing their ecological functions. This study was an effective attempt to investigate the relationship among plastic surface characteristics, sedimentary physicochemical properties, and bacterial communities in mangrove sediments. The widespread use of biogas slurry could potentially raise the environmental risk of antibiotics. Dissolved organic matter (DOM), as the most active part of biogas slurry, was able to interact with antibiotics and play a crucial role in the structure and function of soil and aquatic ecosystems. The recent shifts in global climate patterns have garnered significant attention due to their substantial impact on temperature, thereby exerting a direct influence on the characteristics of DOM and subsequently on the environmental behavior of antibiotics. However, there is limited research concerning the impact of temperature on the binding of DOM and antibiotics. Thus, this study aimed to explore the temperature-dependent structural transformation and driving factors of biogas slurry-derived DOM (BSDOM). Additionally, the binding characteristics between BSDOM and the commonly used antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) at different temperatures were studied by using multi spectroscopic methods and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis. The results suggested that the temperature-dependent structural transformation of BSDOM was reversible, with a slight lag in the transition temperature under cooling (13 °C for heating and 17 °C for cooling). Heating promoted the conversion of protein-like to humic-like substances while cooling favored the decomposition of humic-like substances. BSDOM and NOR were static quenching, with oxygen-containing functional groups such as C-O and -OH playing an important role. Temperature influenced the order of binding, the activity of the protein fraction, and its associated functional groups. At temperatures of 25 °C and 40 °C, the fluorescent components were observed to exhibit consistent binding preferences, whereby the humic-like component demonstrated a greater affinity for NOR compared to the protein-like component. However, the functional group binding order exhibited an opposite trend. At 10 °C, a new protein-like component appeared and bound preferentially to NOR, when no C-O stretch corresponding to the amide was observed. Since data on Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in mangrove ecosystems are very limited. This study investigated the occurrence, distribution, sources, and ecological risk of 24 PFASs in the overlying waters and sediments of mangrove systems in Hainan Island, China. The concentration levels of PFASs in water and sediment ranged from 6.3 to 35.3 ng/L and from 0.33 to 10.2 ng/g dw, respectively. In terms of spatial distribution, firstly, the mangrove forests in Haikou and Sanya contained higher levels of PFASs; secondly, the eastern region contained higher levels of PFASs than the western region. The reasons for this may be related to the population size and development level of the region. For the organic carbon normalized sediment-water partition coefficient (log K oc ), the results showed that log K oc decreased with increasing carbon chains for short-chain PFASs (with ≤6 CF 2 units) and increased with increasing carbon chains for long-chain PFASs (with ˃6 CF 2 units). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis were employed to pinpoint specific origins of PFASs, namely firefighting, metal plating, food packaging, textiles, and fluoropolymer manufacturing. The risk quotient (RQ) values of PFASs in mangrove ecosystems on Hainan Island were all <1, but the existence of potential risks cannot be excluded. As one of the promising alternatives of conventional plastic mulching film (C-PMF), biodegradable plastic mulching films (B-PMF) were employed in agronomy production to alleviate the environmental burden of C-PMF. However, information regarding the potential toxicity effects of biodegradable microplastics (MPs) in soil still in scarcity, and the available findings were found to be controversial. Additionally, little is known about the molecular toxicity effects of conventional and biodegradable MPs on terrestrial organisms. Thus, 5 % (w/w) biodegradable (polylactic acid, PLA) and conventional (polyvinylchloride, PVC; low-density polyvinylchloride, LDPE) MPs were employed to assess the toxicity effects on Eisenia fetida in agricultural soil with biogas slurry irrigation. In the present study, transcriptomic, metabolomic profiles and individual indexes were selected to reveal the toxicity mechanisms from molecular level to the individual response. Furthermore, dysbiosis of bacterial community in gut was also investigated for obtaining comprehensive knowledge on the MPs toxicity. At the end of the exposure, the number of survival earthworms after MPs exposure was significantly reduced. Compared with the initial body weight, PLA and LDPE increased the biomass of earthworms after MPs exposure, while no significant influence on the biomass was observed in PVC treatment. Microbacterium, Klebsiella and Chryseobacterium were significantly enriched in earthworm gut after PLA, PVC and LDPE exposure, respectively (p < 0.05). Transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis revealed that PLA exposure induced neurotransmission disorder and high energetic expenditure in earthworms. However, PVC and LDPE inhibited the nutrient absorption efficiency and activated the innate immunity responses of earthworms. The PLS-SEM results showed that the effects of MPs were dominated by the polymer types, and hence, significantly and directly influence the gut bacterial community of earthworms. At present, most ecotoxicological studies are still confined to focusing on the harmful effects of biochar itself on soil fauna. However, the potential ecotoxicity of different components separated from biochar to terrestrial invertebrates remains poorly understood. In this study, the dissolved matter (DM) and particulate matter (PM) were separated from biochar (BC) and then introduced into the soil-earthworm system to investigate the response mechanism of earthworms at the molecular level. The results showed that BC and DM exposure caused an increase in the abundance of Proteobacteria in the cast bacterial community, suggesting the dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota. It was also observed that the cast bacterial communities were more sensitive to DM exposure than PM exposure. Transcriptomic analysis showed that BC and DM exposure induced significant enrichment of functional pathways related to infectious and neuropathic diseases. Metabolomic profiling manifested that DM exposure caused metabolic dysfunction, antioxidant and detoxification abilities recession. Furthermore, significant differences in the responses of earthworms at transcriptomic and metabolic levels confirmed that DM exhibited greater ecotoxicity than PM. Currently, information on microplastics (MPs) weathering characteristics and ecological functions driven by MPs-associated microbes in mangrove ecosystems remains unclear, especially in the degraded areas. Herein, we compared the weathering characteristics of MPs in both undegraded and degraded mangrove sediments, and then explored the potential interactions between their weathering characteristics and microbially-driven functions. After 70 days of incubation, different MPs (including polyethylene PE, polystyrene PS, and polylactic acid PLA) were strongly weathered in mangrove sediments, with significant erosion features. Interestingly, more obvious weathering characteristics were found for MPs in the undegraded mangrove sediments. O/C ratio value of MPs in the undegraded sediments was 2.3-3.0 times greater than that in the degraded ones. Besides, mangrove degradation reduced network complexity among MPs-associated microorganisms and affected their metabolic activities. Bacteria involved in carbon cycle process enriched on nondegradable MPs, whereas abundant bacteria responsible for sulphur cycle were observed on PLA-MPs. Moreover, these relevant bacteria were more abundant on MPs in the undegraded mangrove sediments. Mangrove degradation could directly and indirectly affect MPs weathering process and microbially-driven functions through regulating sediment properties and MPs-associated microbes. Contamination of paddy soils with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has become a severe environmental issue. Application of functionalized biochar for rice cultivation has been proposed as an effective means to reduce environmental risks of these PTEs in paddy soils. This work was undertaken to seek the positive effects of a rice husk-derived silicon (Si)-rich biochar (Si-BC) and a pig carcass-derived phosphorus (P)-rich biochar (P-BC), as well as their Fe-modified biochars (Fe-Si-BC and Fe-P-BC) on the enzyme activity and PTE availability in an As-Cd-Pb-contaminated soil. A rice cultivation pot trial was conducted using these functionalized biochars as soil amendments for the alleviation of PTE accumulation in rice plants. Results showed that Si-BC decreased the concentrations of As in rice grain and straw by 59.4 % and 61.4 %, respectively, while Fe-Si-BC significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced plant growth, increasing grain yield (by 38.6 %). Fe-Si-BC significantly (P < 0.05) elevated Cd and Pb accumulation in rice plants. P-BC enhanced the activities of dehydrogenase, catalase, and urease, and reduced grain-Pb and straw-Pb by 49.3 % and 43.2 %, respectively. However, Fe-P-BC reduced plant-As in rice grain and straw by 12.2 % and 51.2 %, respectively, but increased plant-Cd and plant-Pb. Thus, Fe-modified Si- and P-rich biochars could remediate paddy soils contaminated with As, and enhance the yield and quality of rice. Rice grown in soils contaminated with arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) can cause lower rice yield and quality due to the toxic stress. Herein, we examined the role of functionalized biochars (raw phosphorus (P)-rich (PBC) and iron (Fe)-modified P-rich (FePBC)) coupled with different irrigation regimes (continuously flooded (CF) and intermittently flooded (IF)) in affecting rice yield and accumulation of As and Pb in rice grain. Results showed that FePBC increased the rice yield under both CF (47.4%) and IF (19.6%) conditions, compared to the controls. Grain As concentration was higher under CF (1.94-2.42 mg kg -1 ) than IF conditions (1.56-2.31 mg kg -1 ), whereas the concentration of grain Pb was higher under IF (0.10-0.76 mg kg -1 ) than CF (0.12-0.48 mg kg -1 ) conditions. Application of PBC reduced grain Pb by 60.1% under CF conditions, while FePBC reduced grain As by 12.2% under IF conditions, and increased grain Pb by 2.9 and 6.6 times under CF and IF conditions, respectively, compared to the controls. As a reliable environment-friendly alternative, biodegradable plastic mulching films have been introduced into agricultural practice to reduce the adverse threats posed by conventional plastic products. Information regarding whether potential untoward effects of biodegradable plastics exist in soil and how strong are such effects on terrestrial organisms, however, still remains unknown. This study examined differences in the responses of earthworm, represented by Eisenia fetida, to exposure to biodegradable (PLA: polylactic acid) and conventional microplastics (PVC: polyvinylchloride, LDPE: low-density polyethylene) in soil with biogas slurry irrigation. Mortality, growth, histopathology and biochemical enzymes of the earthworms exposed to different concentrations of microplastics (5, 20 and 50 g/kg wet weight of soil, respectively) were investigated after 28 days of incubation in the experiment. The obtained results showed that the ecotoxicity of microplastics (MPs) to earthworms was time-dependent. Regardless of MPs type, continuous exposure to MPs at the concentration of 50 g/kg induced mucous vacuolization, longitude muscle disorder, and granular lipofuscin-like deposits generation in the epithelium. Moreover, tissue fibrosis and cavity formation were also observed in intestinal tissue. The presence of MPs stimulated the oxidative stress system of the earthworms, as indicated by the enhancement of malonaldehyde (MDA) content in vivo. The antioxidative defense system in earthworms was supposed to collapse at the MPs concentration of 50 g/kg after 28 days of exposure. Interestingly, PLA exhibited similar ecotoxicity effects with LDPE, which might violate the original intention of biodegradable plastics with less harmful or nontoxic influence on the terrestrial biotas. Microplastics (MPs) are classified as emerging pollutants and greatly threatens soil ecosystems. To determine the impact of microplastic migration on soil bacterial diversity, we conducted a 90-day indoor soil column simulation test. Soil and microplastic (granular polystyrene, polypropylene MPs) samples were collected from different soil layers on days 30, 60, and 90. The downward migration trend of MPs was obvious, and its surface functional groups, hydrophobic properties, and crystallinity changed. Bacterial diversity was significantly higher in the surrounding soil than on microplastic surfaces. Also, the topsoil has more bacterial diversity than the middle soil. A higher number of OTUs were detected on microplastic surfaces for the middle soil than in the topsoil. Proteobacteria abundance on microplastic surfaces in the topsoil gradually increased over the course of the experiment, while an opposite trend was observed for the middle soil. Nevertheless, Proteobacteria abundances in both layers were higher than in the surrounding soils. MPs alters the bacterial community composition of soils and provides unique substrates for colonization. The impacts of MPs on soil bacterial communities were better understood in this study. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) chemodiversity plays an important role in regulating nutrient cycles and contaminant behavior in soil. However, how biodegradable microplastic (MPs) affect the DOM chemodiversity is still unknown, although developing biodegradable plastics are regarded as a promising strategy to minimize the risks of MPs residues in soil. Here, with the common poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) as the model, the molecular effect of biodegradable MPs on soil DOM was explored by adding 0%, 5% and 10% (w/w) of PBAT to tropical latosol, respectively. The results showed that PBAT addition increased microbial activity and exoenzyme activity (e.g., rhizopus oryzae lipase, invertase and cellulose). As a result, the quantity and chemodiversity of soil DOM were changed. The multispectroscopic characterization showed that PBAT addition significantly increased the DOC molecules in soil, including condensed aromatic-like substances and carbohydrates. In contrast, the TDN molecules with high bioavailability and low aromaticity, such as amino acids, were decreased. The multivariate statistical analysis indicated that there were three mechanisms that drove the shift in DOM chemodiversity. Firstly, the degradation of PBAT by rhizopus oryzae lipase facilitated the release of exogenous aromatic molecules. Secondly, PBAT decomposition stimulated the selective consumption of native N-rich molecules by soil microbes. Thirdly, PBAT accelerated the enzymatic transformation of native aliphatic CH x and cellulose toward humic substances. In addition, concentration effect was also observed in the study that high-concentration PBAT were more likely to trigger the molecular shift in DOM chemodiversity. Biochar possesses a unique porous structure and abundant surface functional groups, which can potentially help mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from compost. This review summarizes the properties and functions of biochar, and the effects of biochar on common GHGs (methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O)) and ammonia (NH 3 , an indirect GHG) during composting. Studies have shown that it is possible to improve the mitigation of GHG emissions during composting by adjusting the biochar amount, type of raw material, pyrolysis temperature, and particle size. Biochar produced from crop residues and woody biomass has a greater effect on mitigating CH 4 , N 2 O, and NH 3 emissions during composting, and GHG emissions can be reduced significantly by adding about 10% (w/w) biochar. Biochar produced by high temperature pyrolysis (500-900 °C) has a greater effect on mitigating CH 4 and N 2 O emissions, whereas biochar generated by low temperature pyrolysis (200-500 °C) is more effective at reducing NH 3 emissions. Interestingly, adding granular biochar is more beneficial for mitigating CH 4 emissions, whereas adding powdered biochar is better at reducing NH 3 emissions. According to the current research status, developing new methods for producing and using biochar (e.g., modified or combined with other additives) should be the focus of future research into mitigating GHG emissions during composting. Over the last decade, microplastics (MPs, plastic particles <5 mm) as emerging contaminants have received a great deal of international attention, not only because of their continuous accumulation in both marine and terrestrial environment, but also due to their serious threats posed to the environment. Voluminous studies regarding sources, distribution characterization, and fate of MPs in the different environmental compartments (e.g., marine, freshwater, wastewater, and soil) have been reported since 2004, whereas MPs pollution in unique marine ecosystems (e.g., coastal mangrove habitat) receives little scientific attention. Mangrove ecosystem, an important buffer between the land and the sea, has been identified as a potential sink of MPs caused by both marine and land-based activities. Moreover, the source and distribution characteristics of MPs in this ecosystem are significantly different from other coastal habitats, mainly owing to its unique features of high productivity and biomass. With the impetus to provide a more integrated view of MPs pollution in mangrove habitats, a literature review was conducted based on the existing studies related to this topic. This is the first review to present the current state of MPs pollution in mangrove ecosystems, specially including (i) the possible sources of MPs in mangrove areas and their pathways entering into this habitat; (ii) MPs pollution in the different mangrove compartments (including surface seawater, sediments, and biotas); and (iii) factors influencing MPs distribution in mangrove areas. Plastic litters have become the predominant components of marine debris due to extensive consumption plastics and mismanagement of plastic wastes. As part of the problem, microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have generated special concerns due to their unique features that make them easy to transfer among oceans in the marine ecosystem, across different trophic levels inside the food web, and even across different tissues inside contaminated animals. Studies have demonstrated the almost omnipresence of MPs in the marine ecosystem, which present serious threats to the health of marine animals, causing symptoms such as malnutrition, inflammation, chemical poisoning, growth thwarting, decrease of fecundity, and death due to damages at individual, organ, tissue, cell, and molecule levels. The information on NPs in the marine ecosystem has been scarce due to the challenges in sampling and detecting these nano-scaled entities. In vitro and in vivo experiments have demonstrated that NPs have the potential to penetrate different biological barriers including the gastrointestinal barrier and the brain blood barrier and have been detected in many important organs such as brains, the circulation system and livers of sampled animals., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Biochar, can be used as a sorbent material to sequester organic contaminants in soils. In this study, the sorption-desorption behavior of atrazine (AT) was studied in latosol (L) supplemented with varying doses of cassava waste biochar (CW). Changes in the release of AT were assessed with varying aging time (0-60 days) and environmental factors (pH, ionic strength, solid-liquid ratio and disturbance intensity). Results indicate that the addition of 0.1%-5% (w/w) CW in L, promoted AT adsorption by 1.7- to 36-fold as compared with the natural soil control, after 60 days. The release of AT from biochar-amended soil was significantly affected by pH ranged from 3 to 9 and the amount of desorbed AT increased with increasing pH conditions. 0.05 mol/L Ca 2+ enhanced AT sorption by biochar. The release of AT increased with increasing solid-liquid ratio (at the ratio of 1:10, 1:15, 1:20) and disturbance intensity, surface complexation and cation exchange were found to play important roles in sorption mechanisms., (Copyright © 2018. In this study, the impacts of various cations, cation strength and pH on ofloxacin (OFL) adsorption to cassava residue-derived biochars were determined. The associated adsorption mechanisms are discussed. The biochars were prepared at pyrolysis temperatures ranging from 350°C to 750°C, and labeled as CW350, CW450, CW550, CW650 and CW750. The Freundlich model provided the best fit to describe the adsorption capacity of OFL and the Freundlich coefficient (logK f ) increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The inclusion of Zn 2+ or Al 3+ increased OFL sorption capacities of five biochars, while Cu 2+ reduced sorption to CW450 and CW550. No significant impacts on OFL sorption were observed in the presence of K + and Ca 2+ . The concentration of Ca 2+ affected the adsorption capacity of CW550, but had no significant impact on other biochars. The pH of OFL solution, ranging from 3 to 9, had no significant changes on OFL adsorption by all the tested biochars. Results of FTIR spectra and zeta potential indicated that electrostatic interactions, cationic exchange, metal bridging and micropore filling could be the main sorption mechanism between OFL and biochars.
