We synthesized the ferromagnetic EuAgP semiconductor and conducted a comprehensive study of its crystalline, magnetic, heat capacity, band gap, and magnetoresistance properties. Our investigation utilized a combination of X-ray diffraction, optical, and PPMS DynaCool measurements. EuAgP adopts a hexagonal structure with the P63/mmc space group. As the temperature decreases, it undergoes a magnetic phase transition from high-temperature paramagnetism to low-temperature ferromagnetism. We determined the ferromagnetic transition temperature to be TC = 16.45(1) K by fitting the measured magnetic susceptibility using a Curie-Weiss law. Heat capacity analysis of EuAgP considered contributions from electrons, phonons, and magnons, revealing η = 0.03 J/(mol·K2), indicative of semiconducting behavior. Additionally, we calculated a band gap of ∼1.324(4) eV based on absorption spectrum measurements. The resistivity versus temperature of EuAgP measured in the absence of an applied magnetic field shows a pronounced peak around TC, which diminishes rapidly with increasing applied magnetic fields, ranging from 1 to 14 T. An intriguing phenomenon emerges in the form of a distinct magnetoresistance transition, shifting from positive (e.g., 1.95% at 300 K and 14 T) to negative (e.g., −30.73% at 14.25 K and 14 T) as the temperature decreases. This behavior could be attributed to spin-disordered scattering.

Summary: Chromium-based perovskites have gained significant interest for their magnetic and ferroelectric properties. Rare-earth orthochromates are versatile multiferroic materials in catalysts, thermistors, and non-volatile memory. We present a protocol for RECrO3 crystal growth using a laser-diode floating-zone furnace. Steps include solid-phase calcination, sintering, and shaping. We provide detailed information on crystal growth parameters and Laue diffraction analysis. Summary: We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on intriguing magnetic properties of quasiferroelectric orthochromates. Large single crystals of the family of RECrO3 (RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds were successfully grown. Neutron Laue study indicates a good quality of the obtained single crystals. Applied magnetic field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements reveal their intrinsic magnetic properties, especially the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperatures. Density functional theory studies of the electronic structures were carried out using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional plus Hubbard U method. Crystallographic information and magnetism were theoretically optimized systematically. When RE3+ cations vary from Y3+ and Eu3+ to Lu3+ ions, the calculated t-e orbital hybridization degree and Néel temperature behave similarly to the experimentally determined AFM transition temperature with variation in cationic radius. We found that the t-e hybridization is anisotropic, causing a magnetic anisotropy of Cr3+ sublattices. This was evaluated with the nearest-neighbor J1-J2 model. Our research provides a picture of the electronic structures during the t-e hybridization process while changing RE ions and sheds light on the nature of the weak ferromagnetism coexisting with predominated antiferromagnetism. The available large RECrO3 single crystals build a platform for further studies of orthochromates.

Background: The significant rebound of influenza A (H1N1) virus activity, particularly among children, with rapidly growing number of hospitalized cases is of major concern in the post-COVID-19 era. The present study was performed to establish a prediction model of severe case in pediatric patients hospitalized with H1N1 infection during the post-COVID-19 era. Methods: This is a multicenter retrospective study across nine public tertiary hospitals in Yunnan, China, recruiting pediatric H1N1 inpatients hospitalized at five of these centers between February 1 and July 1, 2023, into the development dataset. Screening of 40 variables including demographic information, clinical features, and laboratory parameters were performed utilizing Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression and logistic regression to determine independent risk factors of severe H1N1 infection, thus constructing a prediction nomogram. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, as well as decision curve analysis (DCA) were employed to evaluate the model's performance. Data from four independent cohorts comprised of pediatric H1N1 inpatients from another four hospitals between July 25 and October 31, 2023, were utilized to externally validate this nomogram. Results: The development dataset included 527 subjects, 122 (23.1 %) of whom developed severe H1N1 infection. The external validation dataset included 352 subjects, 72 (20.5 %) of whom were eventually confirmed as severe H1N1 infection. The LASSO regression identified 19 candidate predictors, with logistic regression further narrowing down to 11 independent risk factors, including underlying conditions, prematurity, fever duration, wheezing, poor appetite, leukocyte count, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). By integrating these 11 factors, a predictive nomogram was established. In terms of prediction of severe H1N1 infection, excellent discriminative capacity, favorable accuracy, and satisfactory clinical usefulness of this model were internally and externally validated via ROC curve, calibration curve, and DCA, respectively. Conclusion: Our study successfully established and validated a novel nomogram model integrating underlying conditions, prematurity, fever duration, wheezing, poor appetite, leukocyte count, NLR, ESR, LDH, IL-10, and TNF-α. This nomogram can effectively predict the occurrence of serious case in pediatric H1N1 inpatients during the post-COVID-19 era, facilitating the early recognition and more efficient clinical management of such patients.

Circadian rhythm (CR) disruption contributes to tumor initiation and progression, however the pharmacological targeting of circadian regulators reversely inhibits tumor growth. Precisely controlling CR in tumor cells is urgently required to investigate the exact role of CR interruption in tumor therapy. Herein, based on KL001, a small molecule that specifically interacts with the clock gene cryptochrome (CRY) functioning at disruption of CR, we fabricated a hollow MnO2 nanocapsule carrying KL001 and photosensitizer BODIPY with the modification of alendronate (ALD) on the surface (H–MnSiO/K&B-ALD) for osteosarcoma (OS) targeting. The H–MnSiO/K&B-ALD nanoparticles reduced the CR amplitude in OS cells without affecting cell proliferation. Furthermore, nanoparticles-controlled oxygen consumption by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration via CR disruption, thus partially overcoming the hypoxia limitation for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and significantly promoting PDT efficacy. An orthotopic OS model demonstrated that KL001 significantly enhanced the inhibitory effect of H–MnSiO/K&B-ALD nanoparticles on tumor growth after laser irradiation. CR disruption and oxygen level enhancement induced by H–MnSiO/K&B-ALD nanoparticles under laser irradiation were also confirmed in vivo. This discovery first demonstrated the potential of CR controlling for tumor PDT ablation and provided a promising strategy for overcoming tumor hypoxia.

In this study, ten pea (Pisum sativum L.) varieties were compared in their nutrient composition, phenolic compounds, antioxidant properties and their diversity were deciphered by multivariate analysis of correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). The ten pea cultivars are rich in nutrients with different contents in lipid (0.57 to 3.52%), dietary fiber (11.34 to 16.13%), soluble sugar (17.53 to 23.99%), protein (19.75 to 26.48%) and starch (32.56 to 48.57%). Through the UPLC-QTOF-MS and HPLC-QQQ-MS/MS analysis, the ethanol extracts of ten peas mainly included 12 kinds of phenolic substances and showed good antioxidant activities on the 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). The phenolic content and protocatechuic acid showed a positive correlation with antioxidant capacity. All results provide theoretical basis for the development and rational application of different varieties of peas and their related products.

Purpose: To establish and validate a nomogram model incorporating both liver imaging reporting and data system (LI-RADS) features and contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRI)-based radiomics for predicting microvascular invasion (MVI) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) falling the Milan criteria. Methods: In total, 161 patients with 165 HCCs diagnosed with MVI (n = 99) or without MVI (n = 66) were assigned to a training and a test group. MRI LI-RADS characteristics and radiomics features selected by the LASSO algorithm were used to establish the MRI and Rad-score models, respectively, and the independent features were integrated to develop the nomogram model. Abstract:: Enterocytozoon bieneusi, a unicellular enteric microsporidian parasite, can infect humans and a wide range of animals throughout the world. Although E. bieneusi has been identified in many animals, there is no information regarding the genotypes of E. bieneusi in pet birds in China. Birds are important sources of emerging infectious diseases that affect humans, and immunosuppressed individuals can be exposed to potential zoonotic agents shed by birds. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and genotypic diversity of E. bieneusi in pet birds, as well as assessed its zoonotic potential. A total of 387 fecal samples were collected from Psittaciformes (n = 295), Passeriformes (n = 67), and Galliformes (n = 16) from four pet markets in Sichuan province, Southwestern China. The overall prevalence of E. bieneusi in pet birds was 25.1% based on nested polymerase chain reaction analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene (Psittaciformes, 21.7%; Passeriformes, 37.3%; Galliformes, 50.0%). Eight genotypes of E. bieneusi were identified, including five known genotypes (D, SC02, BEB6, CHB1, and MJ5) and three novel genotypes (SCB-I, SCB-II, and SCB-III). In phylogenetic analysis, genotypes D and SC02 and one novel genotype SCB-II were clustered within group 1, genotype BEB6 was classified within group 2, and the remaining genotypes (CHB1, MJ5, SCB-I, and SCB-III) clustered with group 10. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of E. bieneusi infection in pet birds in China. Genotypes D, SC02, and BEB6 that have been previously identified in humans, were found in pet birds in this study, suggesting that these pet birds can be a potential source of human microsporidiosis in China. Blastocystis is a common enteric protist that colonizes humans and a wide range of animals. Although some studies have reported incidences of Blastocystis in humans and animals in China, there is no information available on the prevalence of Blastocystis in giant pandas, red pandas, or bird species. The aims of the present study were to determine the prevalence, subtype distribution, and genetic characterizations of Blastocystis in these animals in a captive situation in southwestern China, as well as assess the zoonotic potential of Blastocystis isolates. A total of 168 fecal specimens, including 81 from giant pandas, 23 from red pandas, 38 from black swans, 11 from ruddy shelducks, and 15 from green peafowl were collected at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan province. The overall minimum prevalence of Blastocystis was 11.3% (19/168) based on PCR amplification of the barcode region of the SSU rRNA gene. The highest prevalence of Blastocystis was observed in ruddy shelduck (18.2%) and the lowest was found in green peafowl (6.7%). The prevalence of Blastocystis in giant pandas >5.5 years of age was higher than that in younger giant pandas. Two potentially zoonotic subtypes (ST1 and ST8) were identified, and ST1 (n = 12) was found to be more prevalent than ST8 (n = 7). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the prevalence and subtypes of Blastocystis in giant pandas, red pandas, and bird species in China. The findings of this study will improve our understanding of the genetic diversity and public health potential of Blastocystis. A hydroponic study was conducted to determine the effects of selenium (Se: 0, 3, 6 μmol L–1) on senescence-related oxidative stress in garlic plants grown under two sulfur (S) levels. We evaluated the yields of plants harvested at 160 and 200 days after sowing. Plants grown under a low Se dose (0.3 μmol L–1) at low S level showed higher yields (12.0% increase in fresh weight yield, 13.7% increase in dry weight yield) than the controls, despite a decrease in chlorophyll concentration. Compared with control plants, the Se-treated plants showed lower levels of lipid peroxidation. The Se-treated plants also showed higher activities of glutathione peroxidase and catalase, but lower superoxide dismutase activities. Changes in Fv/Fm values and proline contents were affected more strongly by S than by Se. On the basis of our results, we can conclude that Se plays a key role in the antioxidant systems in garlic seedlings. It delays senescence by alleviating the peroxide stress, but it can be toxic at high levels. A high S level may increase tolerance to high Se concentrations through reducing Se accumulation in plants.
