Background: In the recent decade, there has been substantial progress in the technologies and philosophies associated with diagnosing and treating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in China. The therapeutic efficacy of ACL reconstruction in re-establishing the stability of the knee joint has garnered widespread acknowledgment. However, the path toward standardizing diagnostic and treatment protocols remains to be further developed and refined. Objective: In this context, the Chinese Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (CAOS) and the Chinese Society of Sports Medicine (CSSM) collaboratively developed an expert consensus on diagnosing and treating ACL injury, aiming to enhance medical quality through refining professional standards. Methods: The consensus drafting team invited experts across the Greater China region, including the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, to formulate and review the consensus using a modified Delphi method as a standardization approach. As members of the CSSM Lower Limb Study Group and the CAOS Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Study Group, invited experts concentrated on two pivotal issues: “Graft Selection” and “Clinical Outcome Evaluation” during the second part of the consensus development. Results: This focused discussion ultimately led to a strong consensus on nine specific consensus terms. Conclusion: The consensus clearly states that ACL reconstruction has no definitive “gold standard” graft choice. Autografts have advantages in healing capability but are limited in availability and have potential donor site morbidities; allografts reduce surgical trauma but incur additional costs, and there are concerns about slow healing, quality control issues, and a higher failure rate in young athletes; synthetic ligaments allow for early rehabilitation and fast return to sport, but the surgery is technically demanding and incurs additional costs. When choosing a graft, one should comprehensively consider the graft's characteristics, the doctor's technical ability, and the patient's needs. When evaluating clinical outcomes, it is essential to ensure an adequate sample size and follow-up rate, and the research should include patient subjective scoring, joint function and stability, complications, surgical failure, and the return to sport results. Medium and long-term follow-ups should not overlook the assessment of knee osteoarthritis.

Background and aim: A surplus of glucocorticoids (GC) is a main cause of non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), and Jintiange (JTG), as one of the traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), also plays an instrumental role in the alleviation of bone loss simultaneously. Therefore, JTG was thought to be able to reverse GC-induced ONFH (GC-ONFH) to a certain extent. Experimental procedure: In vivo, the effect of JTG on trabeculae in the subchondral bone of the femoral head was investigated using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) and histological staining; in vitro, proliferation, viability, apoptosis, and senescence of purified bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were examined to demonstrate the direct impact of JTG on these cells. Meanwhile after using a series of interventions, the function of JTG on BMSC differentiation could be assessed by measuring of osteogenic and adipogenic markers at levels of protein and mRNA. Results: Our final results demonstrated that with the involvement of Wnt/β-catenin pathway, JTG was able to significantly promote osteogenesis, restrain adipogenesis, delay senescence in BMSCs, reduce osteoclast number, weaken apoptosis, and enhance proliferation of osteocytes, all of which could mitigate the progression of subchondral osteonecrosis. Conclusion: According to the results of experiments in vitro and vivo, JTG was deemed to relieve the early GC-ONFH using the prevention of destruction of subchondral bone, which was contributed to regulating the differentiation of BMSCs and the number of osteoclasts.

MgAl2O4 ceramics possess outstanding mechanical properties, making them promising for use as reinforcing or interfacial modulating phase in Al-based metal composites. The challenge lies in the insufficient interatomic potential parameters to accurately characterize the MgAl2O4/Al interfacial interactions, which hampers a detailed understanding of the interfacial strengthening mechanisms at the atomic level. Since the pair potential satisfies the requirements for computational efficiency and accuracy, it has been widely used for investigating the interfacial properties of composite materials. In this study, the interatomic potential parameters for Al–Mg and Al–Al bonds were derived from Buckingham potential, while those for Al–O bonds were obtained from Morse potential via first principles calculations. The uniaxial tensile mechanical properties and interface-dislocation strengthening mechanisms of MgAl2O4/Al interface configuration were explored through molecular dynamics simulations. The analyses reveal that the strength enhancement of the MgAl2O4/Al interface is due to the generation of a large number of immovable 1/6 stair-rod dislocations therein. The thickness of MgAl2O4 layer significantly influences the mechanical properties. Below a thickness of 20 Å, the presence of movable dislocations reduces the strengthening effect. Conversely, increasing the thickness of MgAl2O4 encourages the emergence of immovable dislocations and increases the flow stress, while the corresponding yield strain decreases. These insights open up new prospects in the development of aluminum metal matrix composites with enhanced performance.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying odontoblast damage repair in dentin hypersensitivity (DH) and the role of Yes-associated protein (YAP) in this process. Methods: The DH model was constructed in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, and the in vivo expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, YAP, and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) was detected by immunohistochemistry. COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to simulate the dentinal tubule fluid flow velocity and corresponding fluid shear stress (FSS) on the odontoblast processes. MDPC-23 cells were cultured in vitro and loaded with a peristaltic pump for 1 hour at FSS values of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 dyne/cm2. The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, and YAP was detected by immunofluorescence. Verteporfin (a YAP-specific inhibitor) was utilised to confirm the effect of YAP on the expression of dentineogenesis-related protein under FSS. Results: The level and duration of external mechanical stimuli have an effect on the functional expression of odontoblasts. In DH, the harder the food that is chewed, the faster the flow of the dentinal tubule fluid and the greater the FSS on the odontoblast processes. The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, and YAP can be promoted when the FSS is less than 0.3 dyne/cm2. After YAP inhibition, the DSPP protein expression level was reduced at 0.3 dyne/cm2 FSS. Conclusions: These results suggest that appropriate FSS can enhance the expression of odontoblast-related factors in odontoblasts via the Piezo1–Integrin αvβ3–YAP mechanotransduction pathway and the YAP appears to play an essential role in the response of odontoblasts to external mechanical stimuli.

This study proposes an image-based visual servoing (IBVS) method based on a velocity observer for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for tracking a dynamic target in Global Positioning System (GPS)-denied environments. The proposed method derives the simplified and decoupled image dynamics of underactuated UAVs using a constructed virtual camera and then considers the uncertainties caused by the unpredictable rotations and velocities of the dynamic target. A novel image depth model that extends the IBVS method to track a rotating target with arbitrary orientations is proposed. The depth model ensures image feature accuracy and image trajectory smoothness in rotating target tracking. The relative velocities of the UAV and the dynamic target are estimated using the proposed velocity observer. Thanks to the velocity observer, translational velocity measurements are not required, and the control chatter caused by noise-containing measurements is mitigated. An integral-based filter is proposed to compensate for unpredictable environmental disturbances in order to improve the anti-disturbance ability. The stability of the velocity observer and IBVS controller is analyzed using the Lyapunov method. Comparative simulations and multistage experiments are conducted to illustrate the tracking stability, anti-disturbance ability, and tracking robustness of the proposed method with a dynamic rotating target.

With the increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events worldwide, urban flood in densely populated and economically vibrant urban areas has become a pressing issue drawing global attention. Catchments are fundamental units for understanding urban hydrological processes and managing flood. Current research often lacks an investigation into the importance and spatial differences of driving factors for urban flood at the catchment scale, particularly for different types of cities. This study uses 15 megacities in China as case studies and establishes a comprehensive system of driving factors. It categorizes cities based on population levels, climate zones, and spatial locations. The study begins with hotspot analysis to identify areas with high occurrences of urban inundation. Subsequently, it employs Geographic Weighted Regression (GWR), a spatial analysis technique, to unveil the mechanisms driving the spatial distribution of inundation points in different types of cities and the spatial heterogeneity of driving factors at the urban catchment scale. The research findings, based on multiple cities, demonstrate that urban inundation points exhibit clear spatial clustering characteristics. While impervious surfaces and urban buildings are generally more important than factors such as landscape patterns and population density, the importance and explanatory power of driving factors for the spatial distribution of urban inundation vary across different cities and even within different catchments of the same city. The categorization of cities based on population levels and spatial locations demonstrates stronger regularities in driving mechanisms compared to categorization based on climate zones. The study’s results further underscore the complex driving mechanisms behind the spatial distribution of urban inundation. This highlights the need for flood management strategies that consider both universal patterns of inundation occurrence and the specific characteristics of local driving factors to develop targeted and effective mitigation measures.

Adenosine, a nucleoside, regulates various systems, such as the cardiovascular, immune, and nervous systems, by binding to Adenosine receptors. To elucidate the role of Adenosine in Osteoporosis, this study employed an experimental approach involving the stimulation of bone formation in osteoporotic zebrafish and the reduction of reactive oxygen levels in a glucocorticoid-induced zebrafish model of Osteoporosis with oxidative stress. Adenosine significantly promoted the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells and increased the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP). It also elevated nitric oxide, glutathione, and superoxide dismutase levels while decreasing malondialdehyde. The target of Adenosine’s impact on Osteoporosis with oxidative stress was elucidated through network pharmacology, revealing the PI3K/Akt pathway, a finding corroborated through RT-qPCR analysis. Hence, we present the mechanism through which Adenosine can be utilized to prevent and manage Osteoporosis accompanied by oxidative stress, distinct from the previously identified mode of action of Adenosine in osteoporosis treatment.

Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg (T. hemsleyanum) is a homology medicine and food that is rich in bioactive ingredients such as flavonoids and phenolic acids. A strategy that integrates ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (UHPLC–ESI/MS) and desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) spatial metabolomics analysis was proposed and applied to different parts of T. hemsleyanum for the first time. A total of 132 compounds were tentatively identified, and 3, 7, and 24 components were found only in tuberous roots (TRs), fibrous roots (FRs), and leaves, respectively, using UHPLC–ESI/MS. The DESI-MSI results showed that the spatial distribution of flavonoids between the aerial and underground parts was diverse; for example, vitexin-2″-O-glucoside was largely localized in the epidermis and xylem of TRs, while a small amount was restricted to the xylem of the leaf margin and FRs. There was a higher abundance of most organic acids and flavonoids in the leaves than in the underground parts. Some flavonoids showed the same abundance in FRs and TRs, but the levels of most compounds were considerably higher in FRs. It is possible for leaves and FRs to become new medicinal parts of T. hemsleyanum. Through chemometrics statistics analysis, 19 key differential compounds in different parts of T. hemsleyanum were found, and the pharmacological mechanisms of the main differential metabolites were predicted by network pharmacology. This study provides a novel method for the medicinal development of T. hemsleyanum, showing its great potential in the development of medicinal resources.

As an important indicator of water pollution, heavy metals in lake sediments can reflect the severity of pollution in the entire study area. Although the risk assessment of heavy metals in sediment from various lakes has been widely studied, there is a lack of understanding on the overall pollution risk assessment of heavy metals in sediment from Inner Mongolia lakes located in cold and arid regions. This study based on data from 2019 to 2023 on heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cd) in typical lake sediments in Inner Mongolia, combining toxicity, ground accumulation index, and potential ecological risks with Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate lakes. Furthermore, the origins of heavy metals in lake sediments were quantitatively analyzed using a qualitative analysis and an absolute principal component core–multiple linear regression model. This study presented the following results. Firstly, according to the toxicity index, ground accumulation index, and potential ecological risk coefficient, Cd and Cr were identified as the most hazardous and toxic elements in typical lake sediments in Inner Mongolia. Secondly, the degree of lake pollution in Inner Mongolia followed a heavy to light gradient, with central > eastern > western. The pollution in western lakes primarily originated from natural factors, whereas central lakes were mainly affected by pollutants from industry, agriculture, and human activities. Eastern lakes experienced pollution primarily from animal husbandry activities and natural factors. The comprehensive analysis presented in this study can serve as a valuable reference for the restoration of polluted lakes.

The unique ore-forming processes and the key factors responsible for formation of skarn deposits are still obscure, and challenges exist in the determination of timing of Pb-Zn skarns owing to lacking suitable mineral chronometers. Here we present detailed paragenesis, bulk geochemistry, in situ U-Pb dating of zircon and garnet, and garnet oxygen isotopes together with in situ zircon Hf-O isotopes from the newly discovered Aqishan Pb-Zn deposit in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), northwest China. This comprehensive data set revealed a Late Carboniferous subduction-related distal Pb-Zn skarn system associated with the granitic magmatism. Pre-ore stage garnets are generally subhedral to euhedral with oscillatory zoning and show slightly fractionated rare earth element patterns with positive Eu anomalies that point to an infiltration metasomatism origin under high water/rock ratios. The syn-ore stage sphalerite is typically enriched in Mn and Cd and has moderate Zn/Cd ratios (337–482), with a formation temperature of 265 °C to 383 °C, which indicate magmatic-hydrothermal signatures. The isocons defined by P2O5 decipher that the principal factors for skarn formation were elevated activities of Fe, Ca, and Si species, where remobilization of Pb metals, meanwhile, contributed to ore-forming budgets to mineralizing fluids. SIMS U-Pb dating of zircons from granite porphyry that occurs distal to the skarns and Pb-Zn orebodies shows that these intrusions emplaced at ca. 311.3–310.6 Ma, recording the subduction of the Paleo-Tianshan oceanic plate. Hydrothermal garnets in close textural association with Pb-Zn sulfides yield indistinguishable in situ LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages of 310.5 ± 4.1 Ma. Whole-rock geochemistry and in situ zircon Hf-O isotopes (δ18O = 4.6‰–6.0‰) indicate that the granite porphyry was derived from partial melting of juvenile crust and influenced by subducted oceanic crust. Oxygen isotope compositions of garnets (δ18O = 8.0‰–9.0‰) demonstrate that the equilibrated ore fluids were inherited from fluid-rock interactions between a primary magmatic water and host tuff rocks. Our study highlights the application of garnets as a potential robust U-Pb geochronometer and isotopic tracer of ore fluids in skarn mineralizing systems in subduction-related arc environments.

We propose an acoustic-mechanical metasurface with simultaneous sound absorption and vibration reduction functionalities. This acoustic-mechanical feature results from a nonlocal coupling effect in the designed composite meta-structure. A nonlocal meta-mesh is designed at the acoustic-mechanical interface and embedded in the metasurface array to connect adjacent unit cells, which can make a nonlocal coupling effect. This effect can improve the acoustic property, which strengthens sound absorption by 58.6 %, and the mechanical interface strengthens vibration acceleration reduction by 88.45 %. The resulting nonlocal acoustic-mechanical metasurface achieves an average absorption coefficient of higher than 0.9 within 267–638 Hz, and a vibration level difference of 18.75 dB within 490–920 Hz. The sample has an ultra-thin thickness of 8.5 cm (λ/14 for the lowest working frequency) and is lightweight (305.1 g), whose weight reduction reaches 42.8 % compared with conventional designs with similar functionalities. Our proposed design strategy will be enlightened for multi-functional acoustic-mechanical coupling meta-device.

Summary: Background: In non-high-risk individuals, risk-category-based atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) screening strategies may be more cost-effective than one-size-fits-all approaches. However, current decisions are constrained by a lack of research evidence. We aimed to explore appropriate risk-category-based screening interval strategies for non-high-risk individuals in ASCVD primary prevention in the Chinese population. Methods: We used data from 28,624 participants in the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) who had completed at least two field surveys. The risk assessment tools were the 10-year ASCVD risk prediction models developed based on the CKB cohort. We constructed multistate Markov models to model disease progression and estimate transition probabilities between different risk categories. The total person-years spent unidentified in the high-risk state over a 10-year period were calculated for each screening interval protocol. We also estimated the number of ASCVD events prevented, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained, and costs saved when compared to the 3-yearly screening protocol. Findings: When compared to the uniform 3-yearly protocol, most risk-category-based screening interval protocols would identify more high-risk individuals timely, thus preventing more ASCVD events and gaining QALYs. A few of them would reduce total health-care costs. The protocol, which used 6-year, 3-year, and 2-year screening intervals for low-risk, intermediate-low-risk, and intermediate-high risk individuals, was optimal, and would reduce the person-years spent unidentified in the high-risk category by 17.9% (95% CI: 13.1%–21.9%), thus preventing an estimated 113 thousand (95% CI: 83–138) hard ASCVD events for Chinese adults aged 30–79 over a 10-year period. When using a lower cost of statin therapy, more screening protocols would gain QALYs while saving costs. Interpretation: For the primary prevention of ASCVD, risk-category-based screening protocols outperformed the one-size-fits-all approach in the Chinese population. Quartz tuning fork (QTF)-based techniques of photoacoustic spectroscopy and thermoelastic spectroscopy play a significant role in trace gas sensing due to unique high sensitivity and compactness. However, the stability of both techniques remains plagued by the inevitable and unpredictable laser power variation and demodulation phase variation. Herein, we investigate the phase change of a QTF when integrating both techniques for enhanced gas sensing. By demonstrating harmonic phase-sensitive methane detection as an example, we achieve stable gas measurement at varying laser power (2.4–9.4 mW) and varying demodulation phase (−90–90°). Besides, this method shows more tolerance to resonant frequency drift, contributing to a small signal fluctuation of ≤ 6.4 % over a wide modulation range (>10 times of the QTF bandwidth). The realization of harmonic-phase detection allows strengthening the stability of QTF-based sensors in a simple manner, especially when stable parameters, such as laser power, demodulation phase, even resonant frequency, cannot always be maintained.

This study utilized a rapid detection technique, Isothermal Capture Transient Spectroscopy (ICTS), to identify and evaluate defects related to GaN device surface and buffer traps, and investigated the mechanisms by which they affect the dynamic performance of GaN based devices. Interface states and dielectric bulk traps were analyzed, unveiling distinctive device behavior under positive gate pulse-biased ICTS. The observed S-shaped threshold voltage (VTH) instability and dynamic gate-drain capacitance (CGD) issues were directly associated with these interface states and bulk traps. Negative gate pulse-biased ICTS revealed the presence of logarithmic electron trapping originating from extended electron traps, and spatial wide distributed hole traps within the GaN buffer layer, significantly impacting the dynamic on-resistance (RON) during off-state stress of the devices. The rapid assessment capabilities of this method provide a valuable tool for optimizing GaN epitaxy and manufacturing processes.

Summary: During the operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), about half of the energy is dissipated as heat. To enhance the energy efficiency of fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), we hereby propose a waste heat recovery system for low-temperature energy harvesting of FCEV. A comprehensive fluid-thermal-electrical multiphysics model is established to predict the performance of the proposed thermoelectric generator (TEG) system. Subsequently, a practical prototype of TEG system is developed. Transient and steady-state experimental results from the prototype validated the feasibility and power generation efficiency of the TEG system. At a temperature difference of 40°C, the highest open circuit voltage and power output of each TEG are 6.2V and 0.33W respectively, the results affirmatively demonstrate that the TEG system can recover the low temperature waste heat from PEMFC, thus providing valuable guidance for the design of the future PEMFC thermal management system in FCEV.

Summary: Positive autoregulation (PAR), one type of network motifs, provides a high phenotypic heterogeneity for cells to better adapt to their microenvironments. Typical mechanosensitive proteins can also form PAR, e.g., integrin mediated PAR, but the role of such mechanical PAR in physiological development and pathological process remains elusive. In this study, we found that transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) and integrin levels decrease with tissue softening after the development of paradentium in vivo in rat model of periodontitis (an inflammatory disease with bone defect). Interestingly, TGF-β1 could induce the formation of mechanical PAR involving the integrin-FAK-YAP axis in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by both in vitro experiments and in silico computational model. The computational model predicted a mechanical PAR involving the bimodal distribution of focus adhesions, which enables cells to accurately perceive extracellular mechanical cues. Thus, our analysis of TGF-β1 mediated mechanosensing mechanism on MSCs may help to better understand the molecular process underlying bone regeneration.

Summary: Host specificity plays important roles in expanding the host range of rhizobia, while the genetic information responsible for host specificity remains largely unexplored. In this report, the roots of four symbiotic systems with notable different symbiotic phenotypes and the control were studied at four different post-inoculation time points by RNA sequencning (RNA-seq). The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were divided into “found only in soybean or Lotus,” “only expressed in soybean or Lotus,” and “expressed in both hosts” according to the comparative genomic analysis. The distributions of enriched function ontology (GO) terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways vary significantly in different symbiotic systems. Host specific genes account for the majority of the DEGs involved in response to stimulus, associated with plant-pathogen interaction pathways, and encoding resistance (R) proteins, the symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) proteins and the target proteins in the SNF-related modules. Our findings provided molecular candidates for better understanding the mechanisms of symbiotic host-specificity.

Summary: Background: Cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors in combination with traditional endocrine therapy (ET) are now the recommended first-line treatment for hormone receptor (HR)-positive and HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC). However, the benefits of adding CDK4/6 inhibitors to ET in HER2-low-positive and HER2-0 subgroups remain unclear. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of CDK4/6 inhibitors in combination with ET in patients with HR-positive, HER2-low-positive and HER2-0 MBC. Methods: This secondary analysis assessed progression-free survival (PFS) among HER2-low-positive and HER2-0 patients enrolled in the double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised clinical trials PALOMA-2 and PALOMA-3. The study included 1186 HER2-negative, HR-positive female patients, with available immunohistochemistry (IHC) and/or in situ hybridization (ISH) results, across 17 countries enrolled between February 2013 and August 2014. HER2-low-positive status was defined by IHC 1+ or 2+ with negative ISH, and HER2-zero by IHC 0. Data analyses were conducted between March and May 2023. In the PALOMA-2 trial, patients were randomly assigned to receive either palbociclib or placebo, in combination with letrozole in the first-line treatment for HR-positive MBC. Patients in the PALOMA-3 study, who had progression or relapse during previous ET, were randomly allocated to receive either palbociclib plus fulvestrant or placebo plus fulvestrant. The primary endpoint was investigator-assessed PFS. Kaplan–Meier approach and Cox proportional hazards model were applied to estimate the association of treatment strategies with PFS among HER2-0 and HER2-low-positive populations. The two trials are registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01740427 and NCT01942135. Findings: Of the 666 patients with MBC from the PALOMA-2 study, there were 153 HER2-0 and 513 HER2-low-positive patients. In the HER2-0 population, no significant difference in PFS was observed between the palbociclib-letrozole and placebo-letrozole groups (hazard ratio = 0.79, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.48–1.30, p = 0.34). In the HER2-low-positive population, palbociclib-letrozole demonstrated a significantly lower risk of PFS than placebo-letrozole group (hazard ratio = 0.52, 95% CI 0.41–0.66, p

A control group was implemented without the application of NPs. Results showed that NPs had no significant effect on root biomass. Treatment with 200 mg/kg of SiO2 NPs significantly increased the total tanshinone content by 44.07 %, while 200 mg/kg of CeO2 NPs were conducive to a 22.34 % increase in salvianolic acid B content. Exposure to CeO2 NPs induced a substantial rise in the MDA content in leaves (176.25 % and 329.15 % under low and high concentration exposure, respectively), resulting in pronounced oxidative stress. However, TiO2 and SiO2 NPs did not evoke a robust response from the antioxidant system. Besides, high doses of CeO2 NP-amended soil led to reduced nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents. Furthermore, the NP amendment disturbed the carbon and nitrogen metabolism in the plant rhizosphere and reshaped the rhizosphere microbial community structure. The application of CeO2 and TiO2 NPs promoted the accumulation of metabolites with antioxidant functions, such as D-altrose, trehalose, arachidonic acid and ergosterol. NPs displayed a notable suppressive effect on pathogenic fungi (Fusarium and Gibberella) in the rhizosphere, while enriching beneficial taxa with disease resistance, heavy metal antagonism and plant growth promotion ability (Lysobacter, Streptomycetaceae, Bacillaceae and Hannaella). Correlation analysis indicated the involvement of rhizosphere microorganisms in plant adaptation to NP amendments. NPs regulate plant growth and quality by altering soil properties, rhizosphere microbial community structure, and influencing plant and rhizosphere microbe metabolism. These findings were beneficial to deepening the understanding of the mechanism by which NPs affect medicinal plants.

Microcystins (MCs) are toxic to the central nervous system of mammals. However, the direct toxicity of MCs on mammalian brain cells and the involved molecular mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Here, we incubated primary astrocytes, the major glial cell-type in the brain, with 0–12.5 μM concentrations of MC-LR for 48 h, and the impairment was evaluated. We found that MC-LR caused significant increases in the cell viability at the range of 0.05–1 μM concentrations with the highest density at 0.1 μM concentration. Treatment with 0.1 μM MC-LR induced YAP nuclear translocation and decreased the ratio of p-YAP to YAP. It also decreased mRNA levels of the upstream regulator (AMOT), and enhanced expressions of YAP interacted genes (Egfr, Tead1, and Ctgf) in primary astrocytes. Overexpression of AMOT significantly attenuated the increase of MC-LR-induced astrocyte proliferation and the expression of YAP downstream genes. These results indicate that Hippo signaling contributed to MC-LR-caused astrocyte proliferation. Further, reactive astrogliosis was observed in the mice brain after MC-LR exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations (20 or 100 μg/L) through drinking water for 16 weeks. Pathological observations revealed that 100 μg/L MC-LR exposure caused neuronal damages with characteristics of shrunken or vacuolation in the region of the cerebral cortex, striatum and cerebellum. These results were accompanied with increased oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Our data reveal the potential astrocytic mechanisms in MC-induced neurotoxicity and raise an alarm for neurodegenerative disease risk following daily exposure to MC-LR.

The hot and humid environment in the coal mines negatively affects miners' health and mental health. This paper analyzes the factors that affect the human body heat dissipation, puts forward the concept of dressing rate, and uses the dressing rate to correct the human skin heat dissipation loss and sweat evaporation heat dissipation loss in the underground environment. A human-body thermal comfort model suitable for the hot and humid mine environment is constructed. Then the evaluation index UPMV of thermal comfort in hot and humid mines is proposed, and the mathematical model of human thermal comfort evaluation is constructed which improves the accuracy of human thermal comfort evaluation in hot and humid mines. Lastly, a software system of thermal comfort evaluation for hot and humid mines is developed, which is used to evaluate the thermal comfort of the human body at different working points of horizontal mining roadway in Shoushan mine, and the accuracy of the evaluation model is validated. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the evaluation system of human thermal comfort in hot and humid environments, and provide a reference for a scientific and reasonable arrangement of underground production.

Minimally invasive surgery for hallux valgus correction, has been attracting great interests in the recent decades, due to the potential benefits of less pain, decreased recovery times, smaller scars with better cosmesis, and improved early post-operative range of motion. The most recent developments in minimally invasive surgery have evolved into the third generation with modifications of the chevron-type osteotomy. This evidence-based clinical guideline of the third generation minimally invasive surgery for hallux valgus is initiated and developed collectively by the Foot and Ankle Committee of Orthopedic Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Foot and Ankle Committee of Sports Medicine Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and Foot and Ankle Expert Committee of Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Association of the Integrative Medicine. This clinical guideline provides recommendations for indications, contraindications, operative planning and techniques, post-operative management, management of complications, and prognosis of the third generation minimally invasive surgery for hallux valgus.The Translational Potential of this Article This comprehensive guideline aims to establish standardized recommendations for the indications, contraindications, operative techniques, and post-operative management of the third generation minimally invasive surgery for hallux valgus. By adhering to this guideline, the success rate of the procedure could be maximized. This comprehensive guideline serves as a valuable reference for practitioners interested in or preparing to perform minimally invasive surgery for hallux valgus.

In this study, the interaction evolution between the α precipitates that are thermally actived and deformation-induced α′ martensite in a metastable β-Zr alloy during tensile deformation was investigated. Following a two-step heat treatment, it results in the simultaneous precipitation of the thermally activated α phase in both within the β grain (αIN) and at the grain boundaries (αGB). The microstructure after deformation demonstrates that the α′ martensite induced by deformation initially nucleates and subsequently develops into elongated plates that are parallel with each other in the spaces between the αIN. As deformation continues, the α′ martensite grows rapidly in the length direction, firstly facing initial obstruction from αIN, but finally penetrating it and persisting to develop further. However, the growing α′ martensite encounters αGB, it is prevented completely from growing in length direction and instead grows quickly in width direction. Furthermore, α′ martensite plates further thicken and merge with each other, ultimately enveloping the complete β grain, including αIN, to construct an α′ martensite domain featuring an unusual shell-core arrangement. The shell layer is αGB and the core layer is α′ martensite surrounding αIN. Meanwhile, the secondary deformation product, namely {101‾1} twins, will form within α′ martensite domain in subsequent deformation process.

Copper is a microelement with important physiological functions in the body. However, the excess copper ion (Cu2+) may cause severe health problems, such as hair cell apoptosis and the resultant hearing loss. Therefore, the assay of Cu2+ is important. We integrate ionic imprinting technology (IIT) and structurally colored hydrogel beads to prepare chitosan-based ionically imprinted hydrogel beads (IIHBs) as a low-cost and high-specificity platform for Cu2+ detection. The IIHBs have a macroporous microstructure, uniform size, vivid structural color, and magnetic responsiveness. When incubated in solution, IIHBs recognize Cu2+ and exhibit a reflective peak change, thereby achieving label-free detection. In addition, benefiting from the IIT, the IIHBs display good specificity and selectivity and have an imprinting factor of 19.14 at 100 μmol·L−1. These features indicated that the developed IIHBs are promising candidates for Cu2+ detection, particularly for the prevention of hearing loss.

This study investigates resilient platoon control for constrained intelligent and connected vehicles (ICVs) against F-local Byzantine attacks. We introduce a resilient distributed model-predictive platooning control framework for such ICVs. This framework seamlessly integrates the predesigned optimal control with distributed model predictive control (DMPC) optimization and introduces a unique distributed attack detector to ensure the reliability of the transmitted information among vehicles. Notably, our strategy uses previously broadcasted information and a specialized convex set, termed the “resilience set”, to identify unreliable data. This approach significantly eases graph robustness prerequisites, requiring only an (F + 1)-robust graph, in contrast to the established mean sequence reduced algorithms, which require a minimum (2F + 1)-robust graph. Additionally, we introduce a verification algorithm to restore trust in vehicles under minor attacks, further reducing communication network robustness. Our analysis demonstrates the recursive feasibility of the DMPC optimization. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves exceptional control performance by minimizing the discrepancies between the DMPC control inputs and predesigned platoon control inputs, while ensuring constraint compliance and cybersecurity. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our theoretical findings.

Objectives: The aim of this research was to investigate the functions of Piezo channels in dentin defect, including mechanical signalling and odontoblast responses. Methods: Rat dentin-defect models were constructed, and spatiotemporal expression of Piezo proteins was detected in the pulpo-dentinal complex. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) was used to investigate the functional expression pattern of Piezo channels in odontoblasts. Moreover, RNA interference technology was employed to uncover the underlying mechanisms of the Piezo-driven inflammatory response and repair under fluid shear stress (FSS) conditions in vitro. Results: Piezo1 and Piezo2 were found to be widely expressed in the odontoblast layer and dental pulp in the rat dentin-defect model during the end stage of reparative dentin formation. The expression levels of the Piezo1 and Piezo2 genes in MDPC-23 cells were high in the initial stage under FSS loading and then decreased over time. Moreover, the expression trends of inflammatory, odontogenic, and mineralisation genes were generally contrary to those of Piezo1 and Piezo2 over time. After silencing of Piezo1/Piezo2, FSS stimulation resulted in significantly higher expression of inflammatory, odontogenesis, and mineralisation genes in MDPC-23 cells. Finally, the expression of genes involved in the integrin β1/ERK1 and Wnt5b/β-catenin signalling pathways was changed in response to RNA silencing of Piezo1 and Piezo2. Conclusions: Piezo1 and Piezo2 may be involved in regulating the expression of inflammatory and odontogenic genes in odontoblasts stimulated by FSS.

A CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) coating, enhanced with Al and Mo, was fabricated on Q235 steel using laser cladding technology. The synergistic enhancement effect of Al and Mo on the coatings was studied. The findings revealed that the CoCrFeNi coating mainly comprised the single-phase FCC. In contrast, the BCC and σ phases were observed when Al and Mo were individually doped. The simultaneous doping of both these elements resulted in a coating consisting of the BCC and σ phases. Mo addition led to grain refinement and increased the kernel average misorientation value; similarly, Al addition further enhanced these effects. The separate additions of Al and Mo significantly refined the microhardness and wear resistance of the coating. When both elements were added simultaneously, the microhardness and wear resistance of the coating were further enhanced, demonstrating the synergistic effects of Al and Mo on these characteristics. Moreover, the individual doping of Al and Mo decreased the Kp value and the oxide layer's thickness. Meanwhile, their combined addition reduced the Kp value by approximately 82.5 % and 89.8 %, respectively. During the initial oxidation stage, rapid oxidation of Al occurred, thereby decreasing the oxidation rate. In contrast, Mo facilitated the formation of Al2O3.

Laser melting deposition–produced Ti6Al4V additive manufacturingparts tend to manifest as coarse columnar grains. This paper optimises the laser pulse frequency to manage the microstructuralcharacteristics of Ti6Al4V parts and enhance their tensile properties and corrosion resistance. A fiber laser processing equipment with a laser power of 1200 W and a spot diameter of 2.0 mm was employed for all experiments, which provides pulsed lasers at 4, 40, 400, and 4000 Hz at a scanning speed of 8 mm/s and a duty cycle of 95 % for comparative research.The findings demonstrated that increasing the pulse frequency improved the deposition efficiency.An appropriate pulse frequency could promote the refinement and columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) of primary β grains.At 400 Hz, the Ti6Al4V-deposited parts yielded refined equiaxed grains.The average grain size in the middle of the sample was about 206.8 μm,and the microstructure mainly comprised fine α-laths in a lamellar structure, which yielded the best overall performance of the parts, with the ultimate tensile strength and elongation reaching 1083 MPa and 4.09 %, respectively.Therefore, improvingthe structural properties of partsby regulating the deposition process, which is conducive to the online regulation of the forming quality of laser deposition parts, is an effective and feasible approach.

ABSTRACT: Currently, developing nonantibiotic growth promoters is a broad consensus in broiler industry, which is one of the effective ways to reduce drug-resistant strains. Chuanminshen violaceum is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that is commonly used for its roots, while the stems and leaves are often discarded, resulting in a huge amount of waste. This study optimized the preparation process of water extract of Chuanminshen violaceum stems and leaves (CVSLE) by response surface analysis based on the yields of polysaccharide and protein. The CVSLE and herbal powder (CVSL) were then processed into granules before being used as feed additives. The Macleaya cordata powder was used as positive control. The results showed that the addition of CVSLE (0.5% of the feed) showed the highest growth-promoting activity than other CVSLE groups (0.2% and 1%), 1% CVSL group and positive control (0.05%). CVSLE at the dosage of 0.5% could significantly increase the ADG and reduce the FCR from d 21 to 42, d 0 to 42. The HI antibody titers against Newcastle disease virus and avian influenza virus were significantly enhanced at 21, 28 and 42 d. CVSLE did not affect the slaughtering performances, but could significantly elevate the spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius indices and the transcriptional levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-10 and IFN-γ in spleen. The intestinal barrier function of broilers was significantly enhanced by increased levels of immune barrier (sIgA), physical barrier (ZO-1, OCL and Muc-2) and flora barrier (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium). These results suggest that CVSLE was a promising herbal additive candidate for broilers.

Objectives: This study examined adherence rates to tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) among close contacts of individuals with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and identified factors associated with TPT adherence in China. Methods: A multicenter, cluster-randomized, open-label control trial was carried out across three sites involving 34 counties in China. Close contacts of bacteriologically confirmed rifampin and isoniazid-susceptible PTB cases were identified and screened for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Eligible participants were randomly assigned to either the 3H2P2 group, which consisted of a 3-month, twice-weekly regimen of rifapentine and isoniazid, or the 6H group, which entailed a 6-month daily regimen of isoniazid. To assess the factors influencing adherence, a two-level logistic regression model was utilized. Results: Out of the 2434 close contacts who initiated TPT, 2121 (87.1%) completed the regimen. Of the 313 individuals who did not complete TPT, 60.1% refused to continue, and 27.8% discontinued due to adverse effects. The two-level logistic regression model revealed several factors associated with enhanced TPT adherence: enrollment in the 3H2P2 group (odds ratio [OR] = 2.09), management by a TB dispensary responsible for TPT (OR = 2.55), supervision by healthcare workers (OR = 6.40), and clinician incentives (OR = 2.49). Conversely, the occurrence of any adverse effects (OR = 0.08) was identified as a risk factor for nonadherence. Conclusion: Administering TPT to individuals with LTBI is feasible among close contacts. Adherence to TPT can be enhanced through shorter, safer treatment regimens and supportive interventions, such as directly supervised therapy for TPT recipients and incentives for healthcare providers managing TPT.

Seahorses are increasingly recognized for their nutritional potential, which underscores the necessity for comprehensive biochemical analyses. This study aims to investigate the fatty acid and amino acid compositions of eight seahorse species, including both genders of Hippocampus trimaculatus, Hippocampus kelloggi, Hippocampus abdominalis, and Hippocampus erectus, to evaluate their nutritional value. We employed Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to analyze the fatty acid and amino acid profiles of the seahorse species. GC-MS was used to detect 34 fatty acid methyl esters, while HPLC provided detailed amino acid profiles. GC-MS analysis demonstrated high precision with relative standard deviations (RSDs) generally below 2.53 %, satisfactory repeatability (RSDs from 6.55 % to 8.73 %), and stability (RSDs below 2.82 %). Recovery rates for major fatty acids ranged from 98.73 % to 109.12 %. HPLC analysis showed strong separation of amino acid profiles with theoretical plate numbers exceeding 5000. Precision tests yielded RSDs below 1.23 %, with reproducibility and stability tests showing RSDs below 2.73 % and 2.86 %, respectively. Amino acid recovery rates ranged from 97.58 % to 104.66 %. Nutritional analysis revealed significant variations in fatty acid content among the species. Female H. erectus showed higher levels of hexadecanoic acid and saturated fatty acids, while male H. abdominalis had lower concentrations of n-3 full cis 4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Total lipid yields varied from 3.2491 % to 12.3175 %, with major fatty acids constituting 17.9717 %–74.6962 % of total lipids. In conclusion, this study provides essential insights into the fatty acid and amino acid composition of seahorses, supporting their potential as valuable dietary supplements. The differences between genders in specific fatty acids suggest a nuanced nutritional profile that could be exploited for targeted dietary applications. Further research is needed to explore the seasonal and environmental variations affecting seahorse biochemical composition.

Engine data management is of great significance for ensuring data security and sharing, as well as facilitating multi-party collaborative learning. Traditional data management approaches often involve decentralized data storage that is vulnerable to tampering, making it challenging to conduct multi-party collaborative learning under privacy protection conditions and fully leverage the value of data. Moreover, data with compromised integrity can lead to incorrect results if used for model training. Therefore, this paper aims to break down data sharing barriers and fully utilize decentralized data for multi-party collaborative learning under privacy protection conditions. We propose a trustworthy engine data management method based on blockchain technology to ensure data immutability and non-repudiation. To address the issue of limited data samples for some users resulting in poor model performance, we introduce swarm learning techniques based on centralized machine learning and design a trustworthy data management method for swarm learning, achieving trustworthy regulation of the entire process. We conduct research on engine models under swarm learning based on the NASA open dataset, effectively organizing decentralized data samples for collaborative training while ensuring data privacy and fully leveraging the value of data.

In recent years, the strategy of obtaining ultra-high strength bulk Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys materials through implementing severe plastic deformation (SPD) has emerged as the prominent trend in structural lightweight development in aerospace and transportation fields. However, the inherent poor formability makes the SPD process of high-alloying Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys a great challenge. In the present work, a continuous SPD process named the Conform, utilizing a rotational speed of 4 rpm and a mold preheating temperature of 300 °C, was performed on the high-alloying 7055 Al alloy and prepared rod materials with excellent mechanical properties. The results indicated that violent shear deformation accompanied by rapid temperature rise contributes to the specific grain refinement mechanism of continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX). The grain configuration formed by this cooperative mechanism is advantageous for the alloy's compatible deformation capability. As a result, a synergistic improvement in the strength and ductility of the Conformed 7055 Al alloy was obtained. Additionally, the strengthening mechanisms induced by the Conform process were quantitatively calculated, revealing that solid solution strengthening and dislocation strengthening were the primary reasons for the enhanced strength of processed alloys.

With the continuous intensification of human activities, fish biodiversity has been reduced in the Yellow Sea. Therefore, accurate monitoring methods are crucial for determining fish biodiversity in the target area. The environmental DNA (eDNA) technique has emerged as a promising non-invasive method, but it is prone to false positives. The rapid degradation of environmental RNA (eRNA) has the potential to reduce false positives in the eDNA technique; however, there is limited research on using the eRNA technique to study fish biodiversity. This study aimed to explore a suitable sampling method for extracting sufficient eRNA from seawater samples. Furthermore, we performed a case study in Qingdao offshore, China, to survey fish species and community composition based on the eRNA and eDNA techniques in November 2022 using seawater samples collected from 19 sampling sites. We compared the results with data obtained through traditional field survey (TFS) methods and examined the relationship between fish species and environmental factors. The results revealed a significant overlap between fish species detected by the eRNA and eDNA techniques, with the eRNA technique demonstrating higher sensitivity and positive predictivity, and fewer false positives compared to those of eDNA. Our study highlighted the potential of the eRNA technique as a powerful tool for improving the detection rate of fish species in marine ecosystems.

Intercropping has great potential for alleviating arable land competition, improving land output and promoting sustainable agricultural development. However, the applicability of maize-soybean strip intercropping under drip fertigation in arid northwest China remains unclear, especially under various row configurations. A two-season (2022 and 2023) field experiment was performed in the Hexi Region of northwest China to investigate the responses of plant growth, yield performance, water-land productivity and economic profit of drip-fertigated maize-soybean strip intercropping systems to eight row configurations. The results showed that intercropping significantly reduced aboveground biomass accumulation of maize and soybean by 18.77% and 47.81% on average compared to monocropping, respectively. Intercropping significantly decreased the 100-grain weight, ear length and ear width of maize, and reduced the 100-grain weight and pod number of soybean, resulting in reduced grain yields of intercropped maize and soybean (by 13.08% and 48.73%, respectively), but two rows of maize alternating with four rows of soybean (M2S4), three rows of maize alternating with four rows of soybean (M3S4), four rows of maize in wide and narrow rows alternating with four rows of soybean (M4S4-MN), and four rows of maize in wide and narrow rows alternating with six rows of soybean (M4S6-MN) produced greater population grain yield compared to monocropping. Among all intercropping systems, the largest water-land productivity and economic profit occurred in M2S4 (1.61 in 2022 and 1.42 in 2023 for land equivalent ratio; 29.23 kg ha−1 mm−1 in 2022 and 28.22 kg ha−1 mm−1 in 2023 for water productivity; 23,965 CNY ha−1 in 2022 and 23,059 CNY ha−1 in 2023 for economic profit), followed by M4S4-MN (1.53 in 2022 and 1.36 in 2023 for land equivalent ratio; 27.11 kg ha−1 mm−1 in 2022 and 26.58 kg ha−1 mm−1 in 2023 for water productivity; 22,327 CNY ha−1 in 2022 and 22,224 CNY ha−1 in 2023 for economic profit). The M2S4 is thus the optimal row configuration for drip-fertigated maize-soybean strip intercropping systems in terms of grain yield, economic profit and land productivity, while the M4S4-MN is recommended by further considering the efficiency of mechanized sowing and harvesting.

Objective: This study investigated disparities in diabetes and prediabetes prevalence among US children and adolescents using 2019–2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data. With rising trends in diabetes, understanding prevalence rates and associated disparities is crucial for targeted interventions. Methods: Analyzing a cross-sectional sample of 19,490 participants aged 3–17, we employed NHIS data to calculate prevalence rates. Stratification by sociodemographic factors, race/ethnicity, and family income allowed for in-depth analyses. Results: Between 2019 and 2021, overall diabetes prevalence was 1.18%, comprising 0.87% prediabetes and 0.46% diabetes rates. Disparities were evident, with higher prediabetes rates in non-Hispanic black and Hispanic children and elevated diabetes rates in non-Hispanic white and Hispanic children. Subgroup analyses revealed associations within age, gender, education, and income strata. Conclusions: The study highlighted potential increases in diabetes prevalence from 2017 to 2021 and persistent racial/ethnic disparities. The 12–17 age subgroup exhibited significant disparities, emphasizing the need for early intervention. Targeted strategies were imperative to mitigate diabetes and prediabetes prevalence in vulnerable populations, particularly non-Hispanic black and Hispanic children. This study underscored the urgency of addressing health disparities for improved overall well-being and healthcare outcomes.

Background and objective: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have garnered considerable attention in the study of various human diseases due to their ubiquitous expression and potential biological functions. This study conducts a bibliometric and visualization-based analysis of circRNA-related research in diseases, aiming to reveal the current status, hotspots and emerging trends within the field. Methods: Literature published between 2013 and 2022 and indexed in the Web of Science core databases was retrieved. Visualizations of publication volume, countries, authors, institutions, journals, references, and keywords were performed. Microsoft Excel (2021) was used to analyze and graph publication volume and growth trends. Additionally, CiteSpace (version 6.1.R6) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) were employed to visualize the bibliographic information. Results: Between 2013 and 2022, a total of 4195 relevant articles on circRNA in the context of diseases were identified. These articles covered 56 countries, 2528 institutions, 19,842 authors and 698 journals, citing 85,541 references. The annual publication volume showed an exponential growth trend, with rapid development post-2017. China, the United States and Germany emerged as the top three contributors, demonstrating high publication volume and total citations. Notably, Nanjing Medical University exhibited the highest publication volume, boasting 291 articles. Burton B. Yang and Li Yang consistently ranked among the top 10 authors in terms of publication volume and citations, emerging as core contributors in this research field. The journal Bioengineered ranked first in terms of published articles (160), with an impact factor of 6.832, while Molecular Cancer garnered the highest impact factor (41.4), solidifying its position as a top journal in this field. Furthermore, high-frequency keywords included “expression” “proliferation” “biomarker” “microRNA” “cancer”, signifying the prevailing research hotspots and principal themes of this field over the past decade. As of 2022, “biomarker”, “prostate cancer”,“drug resistance”,“papillary thyroid carcinoma”, etc. continued as keywords during the outbreak period. At present, the value of circRNA application is mainly reflected in the two aspects of biomarkers and therapeutic targets, and the prediction of accurate diagnosis and precise treatment based on big data analysis, especially in cancer, will become a hot spot of research in the future. Conclusion: The trajectory of circRNA research from its biological origins to its applications in diseases has been delineated from 2013 to 2022. However, the transition to disease-specific applications and exploration of biological functions warrants further attention in future research endeavors.

Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of obesity and is recognized as a cancer risk. While EPA and DHA combat inflammation associated with obesity, their effects on obesity-linked intestinal tumors requires further study. This study used the azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) model in mice made obese by a high-fat diet to assess the effects of EPA and DHA on tumorigenesis. The results showed that obesity aggravates colon tumor development in mice, yet both EPA and DHA significantly suppressed tumor formation in the obese murine colon. EPA and DHA altered the intestinal epithelium's fatty acid profile, enhancing its anti-inflammatory properties. Both treatments led to a decrease in the pro-inflammatory Desulfovibrio, while EPA specifically increased probiotic Parasutterella and decreased mucus- destroying Bacteroides. In conclusion, EPA and DHA have inhibitory effects on colon tumor formation in obese mice, primarily by modulating the gut flora and inhibiting inflammation in the colon.

The rising incidence of defects in oral and maxillofacial tissues, linked to factors such as trauma, tumors, periodontal disease, and aging, poses significant challenges. Current treatments, involving autografts, allografts, and synthetic graft materials, face obstacles like secondary trauma, inflammation, and inadequate biocompatibility. Tissue engineering, integrating cell biology and material science since the 1990s, relies heavily on biomaterial scaffolds to promote cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Traditional scaffold fabrication, including 3D printing, methods lack precision, hindering effective tissue repair by controlling cell distribution and the extracellular matrix. Biomedical engineering advancements have introduced 3D bioprinting as an innovative solution, overcoming constraints of conventional scaffolds. 3D bioprinting technology enables rapid and precise reconstruction of damaged tissues with loaded cells, mimicking in vivo environments. This paper explores key 3D bioprinting technologies such as inkjet-based, extrusion-based, fused deposition modeling, laser-assisted, VAT photopolymerization, freeform reversible embedding of suspended hydrogels, and sacrificial template printing. The selection of materials with suitable mechanical and biological properties is crucial, considering the distinct requirements of each technique. This review provides a comprehensive survey of research progress on 3D printing biomaterial applications in craniofacial and dental tissue engineering, serving as a valuable reference for future medical research.

Collaborative cooperation (CC) and division of labor cooperation (DLC) are two prevalent forms of cooperative problem-solving approaches in daily life. Despite extensive research on the neural mechanisms underlying cooperative problem-solving approaches, a notable gap exists between the neural processes that support CC and DLC. The present study utilized a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning technique along with a classic cooperative tangram puzzle task to investigate the neural mechanisms engaged by both friends and stranger dyads during CC versus DLC. The key findings of this study were as follows: (1) Dyads exhibited superior behavioral performance in the DLC task than in the CC task. The CC task bolstered intra-brain functional connectivity and inter-brain synchrony (IBS) in regions linked to the mirror neuron system (MNS), spatial perception (SP) and cognitive control. (2) Friend dyads showed stronger IBS in brain regions associated with the MNS than stranger dyads. (3) Perspective-taking predicted not only dyads’ behavioral performance in the CC task but also their IBS in brain regions associated with SP during the DLC task. Taken together, these findings elucidate the divergent behavioral performance and neural connection patterns between the two cooperative problem-solving approaches. This study provides novel insights into the various neurocognitive processes underlying flexible coordination strategies in real-world cooperative contexts.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is an emerging antibacterial therapy. This work selected hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) as the sonosensitizer, and studied the enhanced inhibition effect of Escherichia coli and biofilm by microbubble-mediated cavitation in SDT. Firstly, the influence of microbubble-mediated cavitation effect on different concentrations of HMME (10 µg/ml, 30 µg/ml, 50 µg/ml) was studied. Using 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF) as an indicator, the effect of microbubble-mediated cavitation on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was studied by absorption spectroscopy. Secondly, using agar medium, laser confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, the effect of microbubble-mediated cavitation on the activity and morphology of bacteria was studied. Finally, the inhibitory effect of cavitation combined with SDT on biofilm was evaluated by laser confocal microscopy. The research results indicate that: (1) Microbubble-mediated ultrasound cavitation can significantly increase cavitation intensity and production of ROS. (2) Microbubble-mediated acoustic cavitation can alter the morphological structure of bacteria. (3) It can significantly enhance the inhibition of SDT on the activity of Escherichia coli and its biofilm. Compared with the control group, the addition of microbubbles resulted in an increase in the number of dead bacteria by 61.7 %, 71.6 %, and 76.2 %, respectively. The fluorescence intensity of the biofilm decreased by 27.1 %, 80.3 %, and 98.2 %, respectively. On the basis of adding microbubbles to ensure antibacterial and biofilm inhibition effects, this work studied the influence of cavitation effect in SDT on bacterial structure, providing a foundation for further revealing the intrinsic mechanism of SDT.

The blunt snout bream, Megalobrama amblycephala, is a commercially significant freshwater fish species indigenous to China. In recent decades, fishery resources of blunt snout bream in the Yangtze River have been severely depleted owing to human activities, and limited information is available regarding their genetic characteristics. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of different native populations of blunt snout bream in the Yangtze River. We analyzed 222 samples from six natural populations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and its affiliated lakes were analyzed using ten microsatellite DNA markers and concatenated sequences of two mitochondrial DNA markers (Cytb and ND2). Microsatellite analysis showed that the average observed heterozygosity (Ho), expected heterozygosity (He), and polymorphic information content (PIC) for all populations were determined as 0.687, 0.739, and 0.748 respectively. Mitochondrial sequence analysis showed that the number of haplotypes (h), haplotype diversity (Hd) and nucleotide diversity (π) of the six populations were 29, 0.768, and 0.00641, respectively. The above findings reveal high genetic diversity within blunt snout bream populations, suggesting a robust potential for selective breeding. The phylogenetic relationship results showed that the six blunt snout bream populations clustered into two branches, indicating a measurable degree of differentiation among the populations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River Basin and its affiliated lakes. The populations may represent distinct spawning grounds, and corresponding conservation units should be implemented to protect them. In summary, these findings provide vital genetic information for the conservation and commercialization of blunt snout bream in the Yangtze River Basin of China.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a degenerative disease, caused by genetic mutations that lead to a loss in photoreceptors. For research on RP, rd10 mice, which carry mutations in the phosphodiesterase (PDE) gene, exhibit degenerative patterns comparable to those of patients with RP, making them an ideal model for investigating potential treatments. Although numerous studies have reported the potential of biochemical drugs, gene correction, and stem cell transplantation in decelerating rd10 retinal degeneration, a comprehensive review of these studies has yet to be conducted. Therefore, here, a comparative analysis of rd10 mouse treatment research over the past decade was performed. Our findings suggest that biochemical drugs capable of inhibiting the inflammatory response may be promising therapeutics. Additionally, significant progress has been made in the field of gene therapy; nevertheless, challenges such as strict delivery requirements, bystander editing, and off-target effects still need to be resolved. Nevertheless, secretory function is the only unequivocal protective effect of stem cell transplantation. In summary, this review presents a comprehensive analysis and synthesis of the treatment approaches employing rd10 mice as experimental subjects, describing a clear pathway for future RP treatment research and identifies potential clinical interventions.

The early-age cracking sensitivity of cement-based materials containing alkalis with different metal ions (Na+ and K+) is investigated. The results indicate that alkalis containing both Na+ and K+ can promote the early cracking sensitivity of cement-based materials, in which K+ having a higher promoting effect than Na+. By exploring the shrinkage properties, hydration process, pore structure and micromechanics, the mechanism of the cracking performance of cement-based materials containing alkalis with different metal ions are revealed. According to the experimental results and the analysis of mechanism, alkali enhances the cracking sensitivity of cement-based materials by increasing their shrinkage rate, promoting hydration process, and refining pore structure. But the improvement of cracking sensitivity of cement-based materials containing alkalis with Na+ or K+ is related to cohesive force and structure of calcium silicate hydrates clusters.

Pure water splitting by charged semiconductors and solar photons to concurrently generate H2 and O2 molecules has gained notable attention due to worldwide clean energy generation and storage. Despite significant advancements, challenges facing severe carrier recombination and sluggish electron transport continue to hinder the intrinsic efficiency of water splitting. Here, we fabricate two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride-hybridized sulfur thionic polymorphs (CN/S100/S010 junctions) by incorporating photoactive semiconductors within lateral nanosheets. As a result, the charge rectification effect within the coplanar graphitic carbon nitride/S100/S010 junctions is induced by well-designed driving forces: favorable band offsets and cascade polarized surface work functions. During the water splitting process, the photogenerated electrons are sequentially transferred from graphitic carbon nitride to element semiconductor sulfur {100} and subsequently oriented to sulfur {010} facets. This unique behavior of charge migration within CN/S100/S010 photocatalysts contributes to impressive rates of H2 and O2 production, reaching 740 and 363 µmol g−1·h−1, respectively, nearly 13-fold higher than that of the parent carbon nitride. Comprehensive spectroscopic and theoretical analyses confirm the formation of CN/S100/S010 hierarchies with long-lived charge carriers during hydrogen energy production. This work introduces novel avenues for automatically orienting photogenerated carriers and holds promising prospects for clean energy production.

Background: Ultra-early inflammatory reaction after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) plays an important role in the coagulation process and is closely related to early hematoma expansion. However, the relationship between ultra-early hematoma growth (uHG) and ultra-early inflammatory reaction remains unknown. Objective: To evaluate the association between ultra-early inflammatory indicators and uHG in patients with sICH. Methods: We retrospectively included 225 patients with acute sICH who were divided into the uHG ≤4.7 ml/h group and the uHG >4.7 ml/h group, respectively. The uHG was defined as hematoma volume (milliliter) at the primary computed tomography (CT) scan divided by time (hour) from onset to the performance of primary CT within 6 h after onset. The white blood cells (WBC), blood hypersensitive C-reactive protein, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and other related baseline data were collected and compared between the two groups. The multivariate regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to evaluate the independent risk factors for uHG >4.7 ml/h. Purpose: To investigate the proportion of zonulopathy in patients with age-related cataract, and further explore demographics and ocular characteristics, as well as potential risk factors. Methods: Hospital-based, observational, cross-sectional study. We enrolled consecutive patients who were 45 years or older and diagnosed with age-related cataract and underwent surgery between October 2022 and April 2023 at the Division of Cataract, Beijing Tongren Hospital. Zonulopathy was diagnosed based on intraoperative signs. We calculated the total proportion, age, and gender specific proportions of zonulopathy. We compared the demographic and ocular characteristics between the cases with and without zonulopathy. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to determine the risk factors associated with the presence of zonulopathy in patients with age-related cataract. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD MIM#310200) is a degenerative muscle disease caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene located on Xp21.2. The clinical features encompass muscle weakness and markedly elevated serum creatine kinase levels. An 8-year-old Chinese boy was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Whole exome gene sequencing was conducted and the Sanger method was used to validate sequencing. A deletion (c.5021del) in exon 35 of the dystrophin gene was identified, which was predicted to generate a frameshift mutation and create an early termination codon (p.Leu1674CysfsTer47). It has a pathogenic effect against dystrophin in the muscle cell membrane of the patient. As such, prednisone treatment at a dose of 0.75 mg/kg.d was administered. After one month, a notable reduction in fall frequency was observed. Our new finding will expand the pathogenic mutation spectrum causing DMD.

Correlated photon pairs are the core resources for photonic quantum information technology. Multiplexed quantum light sources can appreciably improve the efficiency of quantum information processing. Here, we develop a coupled-mode mean-field model and its corresponding semiclassical theory analysis to investigate the multiple parametric-gain sidebands in dispersion-oscillation fiber-ring cavities. We present a cycle transfer matrix method to give the analytic expressions for parametric gain. From this, we can reach a physical insight, that is additional degree of freedom introduced by the modulation along fiber length is responsible for the multiple parametric-gain sidebands, where the underlying mechanism is the quasi-phase matching of four-wave mixing. Two twin signal and idler photons generated from parametric-gain sidebands are appreciably of frequency and temporal correlation, revealing promising applications in frequency-multiplexed photon pair sources. When we construct an optical cavity with spliced single mode fiber and dispersion shifted fibers, numerous parametric-gain sidebands grow in the vicinity of zero group-velocity-dispersion wavelengths of two fibers, i.e., 1310 nm and 1550 nm, both corresponding to low transmission loss windows of fibers. Therefore, frequency-multiplexed quantum light sources established on dispersion-oscillation fiber-ring cavities have the advantages in economy, remote transmission, scalability and compatibility with fiber communication network. Our work offers inspiration for the development of a multiplexed quantum light source.
