Summary: Background & aims: Poor nutritional status has been shown to have a detrimental effect on the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are commonly used in the preoperative period to improve the nutritional status of patients. However, the impact of ONS on postoperative clinical outcomes remains controversial. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of preoperative ONS on clinical outcomes of patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. Methods: Nine databases, including English databases (PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL) and Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, China Science and Technology Journal Database, China Biology Medicine disc), were searched from their establishment to October 2022. The last search was conducted in June 2023, and the language was limited to Chinese and English. The secondary outcomes included wound infection, anastomotic leakage, and length of hospital stay. A meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Results: Seven randomized controlled trials involving 737 subjects were included, 363 in the treatment group and 374 in the control group. All seven trials involved patients with colorectal cancer. Patients in the intervention group received ONS, while those in the control group received a conventional diet or an isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diet. The fixed effect model showed that the total incidence of postoperative complications in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group [RR=0.83, 95%CI (0.70, 0.98), P=0.03, I2=29%, n=737]. However, there was no statistical significance in reducing wound infection, anastomotic leakage, or urinary tract infection. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that preoperative ONS can reduce the incidence of postoperative complications, but there is still a need for further research to support their routine use as preoperative nutritional support.

Galvanized steel plates with Zn–Al–Mg coatings are extensively utilized due to their exceptional corrosion resistance. This study, focusing on the cracking behavior of coatings with varying Mg/Al ratios, was conducted using in-situ tensile tests on different samples. The influence of the Mg/Al ratio on the crack resistance of the sample coatings was systematically summarized. To elucidate this point, five types of Zn–Al–Mg coatings with varying Mg/Al ratios were prepared using the same galvanizing process and tensile testing performed using a scanning electron microscope equipped with in-situ tensile capabilities. Macroscopic digital image statistical techniques were employed to quantify the extent of coating cracking, demonstrating the impact of the Mg/Al ratio on the coatings' crack resistance. The findings suggest that an increase in the Mg/Al ratio deteriorates the crack resistance of the coating, while enhancing its hardness. Moreover, this research offers a novel perspective in evaluating the crack resistance of coatings by comparing the effects of different Mg/Al ratios.

Efficient solar energy utilization is a crucial determinant of crop yield formation. Moreover, various planting methods have dissimilar impacts on crop solar energy utilization and its measurement methods. This study examined the differences in solar energy utilization between monoculture and intercropping by considering density configuration, plant type arrangement, timing schedule, and spatial layout. We further evaluated the traditional methodologies versus remote sensing technology for solar energy measurements and described the differences in calculation methods for monoculture and intercropping, drawing from the photosynthesis model. Additionally, we discussed the potential advantages and limitations of employing remote sensing technology for the monitoring and prediction of solar energy utilization in field crops.

This work reports the design and manufacturing of a new electrochemical sensing platform for the monitoring of prednisolone (PE) steroid in physiological fluids. To reach this, palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were successfully deposited on carbon nitride (CN) nanosheets using chemical reduction approach. The prepared CN-Pd hybrid material along with an ionic liquid (IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) were employed for modification of a low expense carbon paste electrode (CPE). The CN-Pd-IL modified CPE was electrochemically characterized to ensure the electrochemical performance towards PE reduction. The important parameters affecting the performance of the PE sensor including CN-Pd dosage and pH of buffer were studied and optimized. The CN-Pd-IL modified CPE illustrated a wide linear response in a PE concentration range of 0.6 nM to 60 nM using SWV methodology. The limit of detection (based on S/N=3) was 0.1 nM at optimal conditions. The suggested PE sensor illustrated the satisfactory reproducibility and good matrix-effectless character. In addition, the CN-Pd-IL modified CPE was facilely used for the electrochemical measuring of PE in the serum samples of athletes with high recovery values (97.6%-102.4%). The proposed methodology can be employed for the sensitive, selective and fast detection of PE.

Adenosine (Ado) is significantly elevated in the tumor microenvironment (TME) compared to normal tissues. It binds to adenosine receptors (AdoRs), suppressing tumor antigen presentation and immune cell activation, thereby inhibiting tumor adaptive immunity. Ado downregulates major histocompatibility complex II (MHC II) and co-stimulatory factors on dendritic cells (DCs) and macrophages, inhibiting antigen presentation. It suppresses anti-tumor cytokine secretion and T cell activation by disrupting T cell receptor (TCR) binding and signal transduction. Ado also inhibits chemokine secretion and KCa3.1 channel activity, impeding effector T cell trafficking and infiltration into the tumor site. Furthermore, Ado diminishes T cell cytotoxicity against tumor cells by promoting immune-suppressive cytokine secretion, upregulating immune checkpoint proteins, and enhancing immune-suppressive cell activity. Reducing Ado production in the TME can significantly enhance anti-tumor immune responses and improve the efficacy of other immunotherapies. Preclinical and clinical development of inhibitors targeting Ado generation or AdoRs is underway. Therefore, this article will summarize and analyze the inhibitory effects and molecular mechanisms of Ado on tumor adaptive immunity, as well as provide an overview of the latest advancements in targeting Ado pathways in anti-tumor immune responses.

Excessive use of N fertilizers (driven by high-yield goals) and its consequent environmental problems are becoming increasingly acute in agricultural systems. A 2-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of three N application methods (application of solid granular urea once (OF) or twice (TF), application of solid granular urea mixed with controlled-release urea once (MF)), and six N rates (0, 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 kg N ha−1) on maize yield, economic benefits, N use efficiency, and soil N balance in the maize (Zea mays L.) film mulching system on the Loess Plateau, China. The grain yield and economic return of maize were significantly affected by the N rate and application method. Compared with the OF treatment, the MF treatment not only increased the maize yield (increased by 9.0–16.7%) but also improved the economic return (increased by 10.9–25.8%). The agronomic N use efficiency (NAE), N partial factor productivity (NPFP) and recovery N efficiency (NRE) were significantly improved by 19.3–66.7, 9.0–16.7 and 40.2–71.5%, respectively, compared with the OF treatment. The economic optimal N rate (EONR) of the OF, TF, and MF was 145.6, 147.2, and 144.9 kg ha−1 in 2019, and 206.4, 186.4, and 146.0 kg ha−1 in 2020, respectively. The apparent soil N loss at EONR of the OF, TF, and MF were 97.1–100.5, 78.5–79.3, and 50.5–68.1 kg ha−1, respectively. These results support MF as a one-time N application method for delivering high yields and economic benefits, with low N input requirements within film mulching spring maize system on the Loess Plateau.

The relationship between support and surrounding rock is of great significance to the control of surrounding rock in mining process. In view of the fact that most of the existing numerical simulation methods construct virtual elements and stress servo control to approximately replace the hydraulic support problem, this paper establishes a new numerical model of hydraulic support with the same working characteristics as the actual hydraulic support by integrating numerical simulation software Rhino, Griddle and FLAC3D, which can realize the simulation of different working conditions. Based on this model, the influence mechanism of the supporting strength of hydraulic support on surrounding rock stress regulation and coal stability in front of the top coal caving face in extra thick coal seam were researched. Firstly, under different support intensity, the abutment pressure of the bearing coal and the coal in front of it presents the “three-stage” evolution characteristics. The influence range of support intensity is 15%–30%. Secondly, 1.5 MPa is the upper limit of impact that the support strength can have on the front coal failure area. Thirdly, within a displacement range of 2.76 m from the coal wall, a support strength of 1.5 MPa provides optimal control of the horizontal displacement of the coal.

We studied changes in the concentrations of aggregate-cementing agents after different reclamation times and with different fertilization regimes, as well as the formation mechanism of aggregates in reclaimed soil, to provide a theoretical basis for rapid reclamation of soil fertility in the subsidence area of coal mines in Shanxi Province, China. In this study, soil samples of 0–20 cm depth were collected from four fertilization treatments of a long-term experiment started in 2008: no fertilizer (CK), inorganic fertilizer (NPK), chicken manure compost (M), and 50% inorganic fertilizer plus 50% chicken manure compost (MNPK). The concentrations of cementing agents and changes in soil aggregate size distribution and stability were analysed. The results showed that the formation of >2 mm aggregates, the aggregate mean weight diameter (MWD), and the proportion of >0.25 mm water-stable aggregates (WR0.25) increased significantly after 6 and 11 years of reclamation. The concentration of organic cementing agents tended to increase with reclamation time, whereas free iron oxide (Fed) and free aluminium oxide (Ald) concentrations initially increased but then decreased. In general, the MNPK treatment significantly increased the concentrations of organic cementing agents and CaCO3, and CaCO3 increased by 60.4% at 11 years after reclamation. Additionally, CaCO3 had the greatest effect on the stability of aggregates, promoting the formation of >0.25 mm aggregates and accounting for 54.4% of the variance in the proportion and stability of the aggregates. It was concluded that long-term reclamation is beneficial for improving soil structure. The MNPK treatment was the most effective measure for increasing maize grain yield and concentration of organic cementing agents and CaCO3.

Multifunctional smart soft armor materials always among the relentless pursuits of scientists to meet the demand of extreme environments. In this study, a novel dynamic stab resistance material owned ultraviolet (UV) resistance property constructed with Kevlar fabrics impregnated with a multi-phase shear thickening fluid (STF) composed of SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles as disperse phase was fabricated. The rheology test showed that the shear thickening effect displayed stronger with the concentration of TiO2 in STF (TSTF) increasing. Moreover, compared with STF, the addition of 16 % TiO2 in STF induced a prominent enhancement in peak viscosity from 550.81 to 3143.29 Pa s. Based on the favorable shear thickening performance of TSTF, the dynamic stab resistance property of the optimal TSTF/Kevlar (TSK) was increased 1.43 folds than that of neat Kevlar (NK). Furthermore, after 168 h UV irradiation, the peak stab force and dissipation energy of the optimal one were 698.43 N and 16.92 J retained 85.95 % and 86.24 %, which was 2.96 and 3.22 folds than that of UV-NK. This multi-functional composite material with the performance of resisting both stab impact and UV in extreme environments had broad application prospects in the field of lightweight protection.

As research and development of nanocomposites receive more attention in today's fast-paced world. SiC nanowires (SiC NWs) and their composites exhibit numerous unique and exceptional properties. As a result, they are widely used in various fields such as the chemical industry, optoelectronic devices, electronic products, aerospace, and military applications. In this paper, we present a comprehensive summary of the synthesis technology, distinctive properties, and potential applications of SiC NWs and the composite constructed from them. The introduction begins with an overview of the basic concept and characteristics of SiC. It then provides a detailed list of common synthesis methods, including precursor infiltration pyrolysis, chemical vapor deposition, solvothermal synthesis, carbothermal reduction, template method, other methods of molten salt, controllable chemical etching, and self-assembly synthesis. The advantages and shortcomings of these methods are also discussed in the context of specific applications. Then, the special performance and multidisciplinary applications are displayed after summarizing the previous studies. Eventually, this review concludes with an outlook on future research regarding SiC NWs and their composite materials, highlighting major prospects, challenges to be addressed, and possible solutions in a wide range of areas. A systematic overview of the topic of interest actually helps to reveal patterns in research cognition, plays a potential role in fostering awareness of scientific innovation and cross-thinking, and also serves as a guide for scientific research and interest development.

The application of biofertilizers is becoming an inevitable trend to substitute chemical fertilizers for sustainable agriculture. To better understand the development of biofertilizers from 1980 to 2022, we used bibliometric mining to analyze 12,880 journal articles related to biofertilizer. The network cooccurrence analysis suggested that the biofertilizers research can be separated into three stages. The first stage (1980–2005) focused on nitrogen fixation. The second stage (2006–2015) concentrated on the mechanisms for increasing plant yield. The third stage (2016–2022) was the application of biofertilizers to improve the soil environment. The keyword analysis revealed the mechanisms of biofertilizers to improve plant-growth: biofertilizers can impact the nutritional status of plants, regulate plant hormones, and improve soil environments and the microbiome. The bacteria use as biofertilizers, included Pseudomonas, Azospirillum, and Bacillus, were also identified through bibliometric mining. These findings provide critical discernment to aid further study of biofertilizers for sustainable agriculture.

Hypobaric hypoxia-induced brain injury (HHBI) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that has still not been effectively treated. There are several different mechanisms involved in HHBI. Among them, oxidative stress and inflammation response predominate. 6-hydroxygenistein (4′,5,6,7-tetrahydroxyisoflavone, 6-OHG) is a hydroxylated derivative of genistein with excellent antioxidant activity, however, the protective effects and underlying mechanisms against HHBI have not been clarified. In the present study, we aimed to explore the mechanisms of action of 6-OHG on HHBI using network pharmacology and experimental validation. Network pharmacology analysis revealed 186 candidate targets through the intersection of the targets of 6-OHG and related genes in HHBI, which were mainly enriched in oxidative stress and inflammation response. Moreover, key targets of 6-OHG against HHBI, namely Nrf2 and NF-κB, were screened and found to be closely related to oxidative stress and inflammation response. Subsequent in vivo experiments revealed that 6-OHG treatment attenuated oxidative stress and inflammation response, prevented energy disorder and apoptosis as well as maintained the BBB integrity in HHBI mice. In addition, 6-OHG administration up-regulated the expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1 and down-regulated the expressions of NF-κB and NLRP3, thereby inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation response. Hence, the present study demonstrates that 6-OHG protects against HHBI by stimulating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway and suppressing the NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway.

Background: Convolutional neural network (CNN) can capture the structural features changes of brain aging based on MRI, thus predict brain age in healthy individuals accurately. However, most studies use single feature to predict brain age in healthy individuals, ignoring adding information from multiple sources and the changes in brain aging patterns after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) were still unclear. Methods: Here, we leveraged the structural data from a large, heterogeneous dataset (N = 1464) to implement an interpretable 3D combined CNN model for brain-age prediction. In addition, we also built an atlas-based occlusion analysis scheme with a fine-grained human Brainnetome Atlas to reveal the age-sstratified contributed brain regions for brain-age prediction in healthy controls (HCs) and mTBI patients. The correlations between brain predicted age gaps (brain-PAG) following mTBI and individual's cognitive impairment, as well as the level of plasma neurofilament light were also examined. Results: Our model utilized multiple 3D features derived from T1w data as inputs, and reduced the mean absolute error (MAE) of age prediction to 3.08 years and improved Pearson's r to 0.97 on 154 HCs. The strong generalizability of our model was also validated across different centers. Regions contributing the most significantly to brain age prediction were the caudate and thalamus for HCs and patients with mTBI, and the contributive regions were mostly located in the subcortical areas throughout the adult lifespan. The left hemisphere was confirmed to contribute more in brain age prediction throughout the adult lifespan. Our research showed that brain-PAG in mTBI patients was significantly higher than that in HCs in both acute and chronic phases. The increased brain-PAG in mTBI patients was also highly correlated with cognitive impairment and a higher level of plasma neurofilament light, a marker of neurodegeneration. The higher brain-PAG and its correlation with severe cognitive impairment showed a longitudinal and persistent nature in patients with follow-up examinations. Conclusion: We proposed an interpretable deep learning framework on a relatively large dataset to accurately predict brain age in both healthy individuals and mTBI patients. The interpretable analysis revealed that the caudate and thalamus became the most contributive role across the adult lifespan in both HCs and patients with mTBI. The left hemisphere contributed significantly to brain age prediction may enlighten us to be concerned about the lateralization of brain abnormality in neurological diseases in the future. The proposed interpretable deep learning framework might also provide hope for testing the performance of related drugs and treatments in the future.

In the context of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment, this study introduces a biomimetic “bomb” approach to target HCC by utilizing macrophages (MAs) as ultrasound-responsive carriers. This advanced biomimetic drug delivery system (MAs-DOX/PFP/Ms, MAs-DPM) encapsulates doxorubicin (DOX) and perfluoropentane (PFP) and is designed to precisely target HCC. MAs-DPM exhibits excellent drug loading capacity and biocompatibility, can effectively release DOX and enhance ultrasound imaging capabilities under ultrasound irradiation (UI). Experiments confirmed that MA maintained its biological activity and vitality during co-incubation and phagocytosis with DOX-loaded DPM, and microscopy confirmed that MA effectively engulfed DPM without changing cell morphology or function. Transwell experiments demonstrated that this bionic “bomb” (MAs-DPMs) not only retained the tumor targeting ability of macrophages, but also successfully delivered therapeutic drugs to tumor cells. Compared with samples without UI treatment, UI significantly increased the release of DOX from MAs-DPM, enhanced the drug release rate and inhibited the growth of HCC cells. Live/Dead staining experiments further intuitively revealed the precise “biobomb” effect of MAs-DPM under UI, effectively proving its ability to inhibit HCC cell proliferation. In vivo studies demonstrated that MAs-DPM was able to proficiently localize tumor sites within 24 h. Furthermore, the ultrasound-mediated phase transition of PFP enhanced the imaging efficacy, confirming the feasibility of macrophage-mimicking biological bombs for real-time in vivo ultrasound tracking. In the tumor-bearing nude mouse model, UI-treated MAs-DPMs remarkably delayed tumor growth and prolonged survival time compared with other groups. Subsequent histological and serum index evaluation further confirmed the in vivo safety of MAs-DPMs, and UI-treatment did not induce significant histological or pathological changes or statistical differences in vital organ or serum markers. These experiment results highlight the great potential of MAs-DPM as a strategic approach for the diagnosis and treatment of HCC.

The investment decisions of enterprises are affected by environmental regulations designed to protect the environment, so environmental regulations may change companies' investment behavior in environmental protection. This study focuses on the River Chief System (RCS)1, an innovative environmental regulation related to river governance which officially launched in China in 2014. Based on data collected from heavy-polluting companies in the Yangtze River Delta, we use the difference-in-differences model (DID Model)2 and focus on RCS's impacts on micro-environmental protection investments. Our findings reveal that the RCS is conducive to expanding the scale of enterprises' environmental protection investments. Industrial structural upgrades appear to have a masking effect wherein the one-sided pursuit of industrial structural upgrades may slow economic growth and cause enterprises to reduce the scale of environmental investments. We recommend that the allocation of environmental investment should be based on the characteristics of local markets and public participation, and maintain a balance between secondary and tertiary industries, government and business incentives.

Hydrogen energy as the alternative to fossil fuel received wide attention. Among different methods of hydrogen production, water electrolysis is the cleanest and most promising method. However, its development is greatly limited by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reaction and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) reaction. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop low-cost, high activity, and good stability of non-precious metal catalyst to replace the precious metal catalyst (Pt, RuO2), and to further reduce overpotential and power consumption. To date, great efforts have been made to develop transition metal compounds with electrocatalytic performance, such as sulfides, oxides, and carbides materials. Especially, transition metal sulfides play a very important role as catalysts and have attracted wide attention for their structural adjustability, high abundance, and mild preparation process. In this introduction, we focus on the role of transition metal sulfides in catalysts for water electrolysis, especially in a few most studied sulfides such as cobalt/molybdenum based sulfides and the recently reported homogeneous cobalt-molybdenum based sulfides, in which cobalt acts as a key element. Composition, morphology, and size are the most important factors that influence the intrinsic activity, electrical conductivity, and electronic structure of these transition metal sulfides. Besides, the effect of carbon nanomaterials as carrier materials is also discussed. The aim of this review is to emphasize the great potentials of cobalt and molybdenum based sulfides with high performance, and to help improve the performance of existing sulfides and explore new modification methods.

Background & Aims: Currently, there is limited knowledge on the clinical profile of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in Chinese children. We aimed to assess the clinical characteristics, suspected drugs, and outcomes associated with pediatric DILI in China. Methods: This nationwide, multicenter, retrospective study, conducted between 2012 and 2014, analyzed 25,927 cases of suspected DILI at 308 medical centers using the inpatient medical register system. Fucosyltransferase 6 (FUT6) is overexpressed in colorectal cancer tissue according to TCGA samples and immunohistochemistry results of a tissue microarray. FUT6 effects cell migration, tumor formation and proliferation of colorectal cancer cells in different essays. FUT6 promotes cancer cell proliferation in vitro and colorectal tumorigenesis in vivo by upregulating PKA/CREB pathway activation. Moreover, FUT6 expression is regulated by rs10409772 shown in the luciferase essays, a single nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter of FUT6. Our study suggests that elevated expression of FUT6 promotes PKA/CREB signaling, which in turn augments colorectal carcinogenesis, indicating a potential therapeutic target for colorectal cancer patients with increased FUT6 expression.

This study uses China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data from 2010 to 2018 to empirically investigate the interplay between digital technology access, labor market behavior, and income inequality in rural China. The following salient conclusions are derived. Digital technology access has a substantial negative influence on individual income inequality in rural China, with a more pronounced inhibitory effect on inequality among low-income groups, males, middle and higher professional classes, and younger cohorts. Mechanism analysis suggests that digital technology access significantly impacts a range of rural labor practices, including increasing the frequency of digital technology use among rural inhabitants, decreasing credit costs, enhancing entrepreneurial activities, and boosting rural labor mobility. Based on these findings, this study proposes accelerating digital infrastructure development in rural regions, improving digital and financial literacy among rural residents, and refining inclusive digital financial services to facilitate more stable and sustainable progress to promote common prosperity.

Background: The android-to-gynoid fat ratio (A/G ratio), an emerging indicator of obesity independent of body mass index (BMI), has yet to be conclusively associated with arterial stiffness in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to construct a nomogram to estimate arterial stiffness risk in diabetics and explore the interaction effect between A/G ratio and traditional obesity indicators on arterial stiffness. Methods: 1313 diabetics were divided into 2 groups based on arterial stiffness identified by brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and demographic and clinical features were measured. The LASSO and multivariate logistics regression were used to develop the nomogram. Calibration curve, decision curve analysis (DCA) and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) were applied to assess calibration and clinical usefulness. Interaction effect analysis was performed to quantify the interactive relationship of A/G ratio and obesity indicators on arterial stiffness. Results: 6 independent predictors (age, gender, A/G ratio, SBP, LDL-C and HbA1C) were screened to construct a nomogram prediction model. The calibration curve demonstrated satisfactory agreement between predicted and actual probability, and the nomogram exhibited clinical beneficial at the threshold between 8 % and 95 % indicated by DCA. The area under curve (AUC) was 0.918 and 0.833 for training and external set, respectively. Further investigation revealed A/G ratio and BMI acted positively synergistically towards arterial stiffness, and in BMI-based subgroup analysis, elevated A/G ratio was a significant risk factor for arterial stiffness, especially in normal BMI. Conclusions: A/G ratio showed a substantial association with arterial stiffness, and the nomogram, incorporating age, gender, A/G ratio, SBP, LDL-C, and HbA1c, exhibited high predictive value. A/G ratio measurement in BMI-normal individuals assisted in identifying cardiovascular diseases early.

ABSTRACT: Previously, we reported that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and its analog liraglutide could inhibit fat de novo synthesis in the liver and reduce abdominal fat accumulation in broiler chickens. Nevertheless, the impact of GLP-1 on adipocyte fat deposition remains enigmatic. This study aimed to investigate the effects of GLP-1, via its analog liraglutide, on chicken chicken adipocytes in vitro. Chemical assays, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and western blot were employed to assess the proliferation, differentiation, and fat deposition of chicken adipocytes. Our findings indicated that liraglutide significantly suppressed cell proliferation and promoted preadipocyte differentiation in comparison to the control group. This was evidenced by elevated triglyceride (TG) content and upregulated mRNA expression of lipogenesis-related enzymes, such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid synthase (FAS), as well as regulators including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), sterol regulatory element binding protein-1 (SREBP1) and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α (CEBPα). In mature adipocytes, liraglutide attenuated fat deposition by inhibiting fat de novo synthesis, evidenced by decreased mRNA expression of ACC, FAS, PPARγ, C/EBPα, and SREBP1, and concurrent upregulation of phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK) and phosphorylated ACC (p-ACC). This resulted in reduced accumulation of lipid droplets and TG content in mature adipocytes. Collectively, our findings indicate that liraglutide suppresses the proliferation of preadipocytes, enhances their differentiation, and concurrently inhibits de novo lipogenesis in mature adipocytes. This observation offers profound insights into the mechanisms that underlie liraglutide's anti-adipogenic effects, which could have significant implications for the treatment of obesity in broiler chickens.

Summary: Apolipoprotein E (apoE) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Microglia exhibit a substantial upregulation of apoE in AD-associated circumstances, despite astrocytes being the primary source of apoE expression and secretion in the brain. Although the role of astrocytic apoE in the brain has been extensively investigated, it remains unclear that whether and how apoE particles generated from astrocytes and microglia differ in biological characteristic and function. Here, we demonstrate the differences in size between apoE particles generated from microglia and astrocytes. Microglial apoE particles impair neurite growth and synapses, and promote neuronal senescence, whereas depletion of GPNMB (glycoprotein non-metastatic melanoma protein B) in microglial apoE particles mitigated these deleterious effects. In addition, human APOE4-expressing microglia are more neurotoxic than APOE3-bearing microglia. For the first time, these results offer concrete evidence that apoE particles produced by microglia are involved in neuronal senescence and toxicity.

Summary: Tumor cell plasticity contributes to intratumoral heterogeneity and therapy resistance. Through cell plasticity, some lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells transform into neuroendocrine (NE) tumor cells. However, the mechanisms of NE cell plasticity remain unclear. CRACD (capping protein inhibiting regulator of actin dynamics), a capping protein inhibitor, is frequently inactivated in cancers. CRACD knockout (KO) is sufficient to de-repress NE-related gene expression in the pulmonary epithelium and LUAD cells. In LUAD mouse models, Cracd KO increases intratumoral heterogeneity with NE gene expression. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis showed that Cracd KO-induced NE cell plasticity is associated with cell de-differentiation and stemness-related pathway activation. The single-cell transcriptomic analysis of LUAD patient tumors recapitulates that the distinct LUAD NE cell cluster expressing NE genes is co-enriched with impaired actin remodeling. This study reveals the crucial role of CRACD in restricting NE cell plasticity that induces cell de-differentiation of LUAD.

Remote sensing monitoring of oil spills is essential for ecological and environmental management. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data have been extensively utilized for oil spill detection owing to the advantages of multi-polarization channels and all-time, all-weather observation capability. However, suspected oil spill phenomenon (algal blooms or wave shadows) and wind-caused oil spill drifting can lead to variable textures and irregular boundaries of oil spill coverage. These increase the complexity of oil spill scenes and pose challenges for PolSAR oil spill detection. Convolutional neural network (CNN) provides the potential to cope with such problems. However, it’s challenging for the existing CNN methods to extract high-order semantic features and attach to accurate boundaries. In this paper, a scene-adaptive oil spill detection network is proposed with a dynamic convolution and boundary constraint. First, aiming to improve the recognition ability of semantic features, a dynamic convolution module is introduced to replace the traditional convolutions and maximum pooling operations. Such module combines the conditionally parameterized convolutions (CondConv) layer with two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2D-DWT) layer. Second, a boundary constraint module is proposed by using the multitasking strategy to extract boundaries of oil spill for guiding the network training with the principle of the minimum deviation between the extracted and real boundaries. To sum up, we propose an oil spill detecting network, which fuses semantic features and boundary information under the attention mechanism. Radarsat-2 PolSAR data from the Gulf of Mexico and the European North Sea region are used for demonstrating the above improvements. In contrast to the current oil spill detection methods, our method improves the overall accuracy by up to 3.4% and 2.3% in two study regions, while the Macro-F1-scores are improved by 5.62% and 4.62% respectively. Besides, this article further discusses the influence of feature selection on the oil spill detection.

NIR sensors, in conjunction with advanced chemometric algorithms, have proven to be a powerful and efficient tool for intelligent quality evaluation of sweetpotato roots throughout the entire supply chain. By leveraging NIR data in different wavelength ranges, the physicochemical, nutritional and antioxidant compositions, as well as variety classification of sweetpotato roots during the different stages were adequately evaluated, and all findings involving quantitative and qualitative investigations from the beginning to the present were summarized and analyzed comprehensively. All chemometric algorithms including both linear and nonlinear employed in NIR analysis of sweetpotato roots were introduced in detail and their calibration performances in terms of regression and classification were assessed and discussed. The challenges and limitations of current NIR application in quality evaluation of sweetpotato roots are emphasized. The prospects and trends covering the ongoing advancements in software and hardware are suggested to support the sustainable and efficient sweetpotato processing and utilization.

Phthalates are positioned as potential risk factors for health-related diseases. However, the effects of exposure to phthalates on accelerated aging and the potential modifications of physical activity remain unclear. A total of 2317 participants containing complete study-related information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2010 were included in the current study. We used two indicators, the Klemera-Doubal method biological age acceleration (BioAgeAccel) and phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel), to assess the accelerated aging status of the subjects. Multiple linear regression (single pollutant models), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, Quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were utilized to explore the associations between urinary phthalate metabolites and accelerated aging. Three groups of physical activity with different intensities were used to evaluate the modifying effects on the above associations. Results indicated that most phthalate metabolites were significantly associated with BioAgeAccel and PhenoAgeAccel, with effect values (β) ranging from 0.16 to 0.21 and 0.16–0.37, respectively. The WQS indices were positively associated with BioAgeAccel (0.33, 95% CI: 0.11, 0.54) and PhenoAgeAccel (0.50, 95% CI: 0.19, 0.82). Quantile g-computation indicated that phthalate mixtures were associated with accelerated aging, with effect values of 0.15 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.28) for BioAgeAccel and 0.39 (95% CI: 0.12, 0.67) for PhenoAgeAccel respectively. The BKMR models indicated a significant positive association between the concentrations of urinary phthalate mixtures with the two indicators. In addition, we found that most phthalate metabolites showed the strongest effects on accelerated aging in the no physical activity group and that the effects decreased gradually with increasing levels of physical activity (P < 0.05 for trend). Similar results were also observed in the mixed exposure models (WQS and Quantile g-computation). This study indicates that phthalates exposure is associated with accelerated aging, while physical activity may be a crucial barrier against phthalates exposure-related aging.

Salinity is an important abiotic stress that has an impact on crop yields and quality. Ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation enables plants to effectively withstand environmental stresses. The E3 ligases have been identified as a crucial component of the ubiquitination pathway, which regulates plant responses to abiotic stresses. The RING finger E3 ligase family of proteins has a critical role in plant growth and response to many abiotic stresses. In this study, we identified an important salt-responsive gene, BrRING509 in Brassica rapa. It is localized throughout the plasma membrane and nucleus. The functional results suggest that BrRING509 significantly increases salt stress tolerance in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) transgenic plants. Overexpression of BrRING509 could increase the survival and root length of transgenic seedlings under different salt concentrations. Additionally, ectopic expression of BrRING509 significantly increases the expression level of salt-responsive genes, including AtRD22 and AtRD29A in Arabidopsis transgenic plants subjected to salt stress treatments. The findings of this study indicate that BrRING509 plays a positive role in salt stress tolerance and might be an important candidate gene for the adaptation of Brassica plants in salt-stress environments.

In this study, porous Ti/Magnéli Ti4O7 nanotube arrays (NTA) was fabricated to pretreat antibiotic wastewater. Characterization of the Ti4O7-NTA illustrated that highly ordered NTA was successfully generated on the porous Ti substrate, which enlarged the specific surface area by 1.67 times. The Ti4O7-NTA has a high oxygen evolution potential (2.60 V) as well as low interfacial charge transfer resistance (4.479 Ω cm−2). Ceftriaxone sodium (CRO) was completely removed from raw antibiotic wastewater after 3 h of treatment by the Ti4O7-NTA, under optimal operation conditions. The biodegradability and toxicity of the wastewater were also significantly enhanced and reduced, as the BOD/COD and EC50,48h values were increased to 0.48 and 57.62 % ± 2.16 %, respectively. The possible degradation pathway of CRO was proposed by LC‒MS. Cathodic polarization was proven to be an effective way to ensure the long-term durability of the Ti4O7-NTA.

The as-cast (Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10)97C2Mo1 HEA (high entropy alloy) was cold rolled to 90 % (CR90 %), followed by annealing at different temperatures (400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C). Their microstructure and mechanical properties have been systematically investigated. The results show that this HEA has a single FCC structure, and that annealing at 500 °C and 600 °C leads to the formation of Cr-rich σ phase. The CR90 % HEA exhibits the tensile strength of 1926 MPa and 4 % elongation. However, annealing at 400 °C and 500 °C makes the tensile strength improve to ∼2078 MPa and ∼2060 MPa, respectively, while their plasticity does not change significantly. Annealing at 600 °C results in a significant reduction in the strength (∼1650 MPa) while a slight increase in plasticity. The element segregation and the formation of nano-sized (Fe, Mn)-rich precipitates are contributed to the significant increase in tensile strength of the HEA annealed at 400 °C. Nevertheless, annealing at 600 °C leads to a decrease in the density of defects (e.g. dislocations) caused by cold rolling and the increase in the grain size, which finally resulting in a reduction in strength.

Background: Many colorectal cancer (CRC) patients are initially diagnosed at an advanced stage. Some evidence indicating that TNM staging may not be entirely reliable in forecasting survival outcomes. The research aims to develop accurate prediction models that can determine the survival outcomes of patients with clinically locally advanced colorectal cancer (LACRC). The study aims to provide valuable insights for clinical professionals to make right clinical decisions. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 636 LACRC patients admitted to the General Hospital of Western Theater Command between Jan 1, 2017, and Dec 31, 2019. Significant factors determining the prognosis of LACRC patients screened by lasso regression and multifactorial cox regression analysis. These factors were utilized to develop a nomogram model, which serves as a valuable predictive tool for estimating the overall survival (OS) of LACRC patients. Next, we validated the nomogram in the validation group. Results: The nomogram emphasized that the TNM stage holds the most prognostic value, followed by CA19–9 levels, smoking history, and MLR. Multiple assessments confirmed the superior discriminatory ability of the nomograms. Conclusions: We have developed and verified nomograms that can predict OS cohort 635 LACRC patients. The survival nomogram may assist clinicians in better strategizing the therapeutic options for patients with LACRC.

Understanding how human leukocyte antigen (HLA) polymorphism affects both the susceptibility and severity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection will help to identify individuals at higher risk to better manage and prioritize vaccination at the clinical level and explain the differences in epidemic trends in different regions at the epidemiological level. This study compared the frequencies of HLA class I alleles (HLA-A, B) in 214 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with different disease severity and 35 healthy controls and analyzed the correlations between specific HLA alleles and disease severity and T cell memory. The results showed no significant difference in HLA allele frequencies between COVID-19 patients and healthy controls (P > 0.05). The allele HLA-B*13:02 was significantly correlated with the disease severity of COVID-19 patients (P = 0.006). After adjustment for age and disease severity, the T cell responses of COVID-19 convalescents with the allele HLA-B*40:01 may be lower at six months (P = 0.044) and 12 months (P = 0.069). Moreover, these results may be due to their rare peptide anchors by analyzing the binding peptide motifs of these HLA alleles. The study may be valuable for investigating the potential association of specific HLA alleles with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The bacterial ATP-competitive GyrB/ParE subunits of type II topoisomerase are important anti-bacterial targets to treat super drug-resistant bacterial infections. Herein we discovered novel pyrrolamide-type GyrB/ParE inhibitors based on the structural modifications of the candidate AZD5099 that was withdrawn from the clinical trials due to safety liabilities such as mitochondrial toxicity. The hydroxyisopropyl pyridazine compound 28 had a significant inhibitory effect on Gyrase (GyrB, IC50 = 49 nmol/L) and a modest inhibitory effect on Topo IV (ParE, IC50 = 1.513 μmol/L) of Staphylococcus aureus. It also had significant antibacterial activities on susceptible and resistant Gram-positive bacteria with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of less than 0.03 μg/mL, which showed a time-dependent bactericidal effect and low frequencies of spontaneous resistance against S. aureus. Compound 28 had better protective effects than the positive control drugs such as DS-2969 (5) and AZD5099 (6) in mouse models of sepsis induced by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. It also showed better bactericidal activities than clinically used vancomycin in the mouse thigh MRSA infection models. Moreover, compound 28 has much lower mitochondrial toxicity than AZD5099 (6) as well as excellent therapeutic indexes and pharmacokinetic properties. At present, compound 28 has been evaluated as a pre-clinical drug candidate for the treatment of drug-resistant Gram-positive bacterial infection. On the other hand, compound 28 also has good inhibitory activities against stubborn Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli (MIC = 1 μg/mL), which is comparable with the most potent pyrrolamide-type GyrB/ParE inhibitors reported recently. In addition, the structure–activity relationships of the compounds were also studied.

Purpose: In breast cancer (BC) patients with clinical axillary lymph node metastasis (cN+) undergoing neoadjuvant therapy (NAT), precise axillary lymph node (ALN) assessment dictates therapeutic strategy. There is a critical demand for a precise method to assess the axillary lymph node (ALN) status in these patients. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 160 BC patients undergoing NAT at Fujian Medical University Union Hospital. We analyzed baseline and two-cycle reassessment dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) images, extracting 3668 radiomic and 4096 deep learning features, and computing 1834 delta-radiomic and 2048 delta-deep learning features. Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM), Support Vector Machine (SVM), RandomForest, and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) algorithms were employed to develop risk models and were evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation. Results: Of the patients, 61 (38.13 %) achieved ypN0 status post-NAT. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed molecular subtypes and Ki67 as pivotal predictors of achieving ypN0 post-NAT. The SVM-based “Data Amalgamation” model that integrates radiomic, deep learning features, and clinical data, exhibited an outstanding AUC of 0.986 (95 % CI: 0.954–1.000), surpassing other models. Conclusion: Our study illuminates the challenges and opportunities inherent in breast cancer management post-NAT. By introducing a sophisticated, SVM-based “Data Amalgamation” model, we propose a way towards accurate, dynamic ALN assessments, offering potential for personalized therapeutic strategies in BC.

This paper systematically investigates the changes in material properties during electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying, the discharge characteristics of the EHD system as well as the active ingredients, textural properties (hardness, adhesiveness, etc.) and moisture distribution of yam under EHD, air drying and hot air drying were investigated. The results showed that the active particles and the ionized wind generated during the discharge process of the electrohydrodynamic drying device had a significant effect on the drying. Compared to thermal drying, 21 kV drying resulted in the most complete cellular structure, the best internal bound water content as well as textural properties of yam. It played a positive role in the retention of internal nutrients in yam, and the total phenol and allantoin contents were increased by 25.74% and 81.99%, respectively. These results elucidate the advantages of electrohydrodynamic drying in yam drying and provide a reference for the application of EHD in drying.

The classical nonlinear fatigue cumulative damage model Manson-Halford is widely used in fatigue life analysis and prediction, but this model lacks consideration for the effects of load interaction. At present, some studies have proposed new correction models to overcome the shortcomings of classical models. However, the problem with these models is that the parameters are difficult to determine, resulting in a cumbersome application process or the correction process is based only on a single parameter. Insufficient correction leads to large fluctuations in life prediction errors. To overcome the above problems, this article proposes a new correction method and establishes a new improved model. Unlike existing models, the newly improved model is based solely on S-N curve parameters and does not require additional material parameters. It fully considers the relationship between adjacent loads and the difference in fatigue life under different stress states, and dynamically modifies the classical model based on larger influence weights. By conducting multi-level fatigue tests on 300M steel, a new improved model was used to accurately predict its remaining fatigue life. Compared with the classical model, the prediction error was reduced by 11.75 %. Utilized fatigue test data from various other materials to predict the fatigue life of the improved model under different levels of stress loading. The results indicate that in the vast majority of cases, the improved model has the highest prediction accuracy among all compared models, with a minimum relative prediction error of only 3.79 % and small fluctuations in prediction error. Compared with the classical model, the maximum reduction in relative prediction error after model improvement reached 28.73 %, indicating the effectiveness and accuracy of the new improved model.

Soil-derived CO2 flux (SCF) plays a key role in mitigating global warming, and the accurate prediction of SCF is the basis for the accurate prediction of climate change. To explore the changes in SCF, discover soil respiration patterns, and accurately predict soil respiration CO2 flux, we used a self-developed soil respiration monitoring device to collect soil CO2 flux data, and proposed a Dish-ECA-Adain-Autoformer (DEAF) combination model with adaptive feature aggregation and bias correction of the Autoformer improvement network to accurately predict the changes in soil respiration. To explore the potential feature patterns in the CO2 flux time series data, the trend and seasonal features of the data were enhanced using inverse contrast based on Fourier continuous transform. The irregular features of the local segments in the unit time were eliminated by adaptive aggregation convolution, and the residual linkage was applied to obtain the potential paradigm of the sequence changes. In the self-constructed CO2 flux dataset, MSE and MAE of the proposed model reached 0.296 and 0.328, respectively, with an average improvement of 34.4% compared to the unimproved model. In the experiments on the public time series dataset, the average improvement was approximately 20.2%, indicating that the model can effectively mine the time series information of the data and the correlation information of the feature dimensions to improve the prediction performance and verify the accuracy and universality of the proposed model. Additionally, the short-, medium-, and long-term prediction results showed that the DEAF model fitted the soil CO2 flux data well, providing a reference basis for the accurate prediction of soil CO2 flux.

Background: Ocular neovascular diseases, which contribute significantly to vision loss, lack effective preventive treatments. Recent studies have highlighted the significant involvement of immune cells in neovascular retinopathy. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) promote the development of neovascularization, but it is unknown whether they participate in pathological neovascularization and whether they are expected to be a therapeutic target. Method: We investigated the role of MDSCs in promoting pathological angiogenesis using an oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) model, employing flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and smart-seq analysis. Then, we evaluated the proportion of MDSCs in patient blood samples using flow cytometry. Additionally, we assessed the effect of MDSC depletion using an anti-Gr-1 monoclonal antibody on retinal vasculopathy and alterations in retinal microglia. Results: In the OIR model, an elevated ratio of MDSCs was observed in both blood and retinal tissue during phase II (Neovascularization). The depletion of MDSCs resulted in reduced retinal neovascularization and vaso-obliteration, along with a decrease in microglia within the neovascularization area. Furthermore, analysis of gene transcripts associated with MDSCs indicated activation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) regulation and inflammation. Importantly, infants with ROP exhibited a higher proportion of MDSCs in their blood samples. Conclusion: Our results suggested that excessive MDSCs represent an unrecognized feature of ocular neovascular diseases and be responsible for the retinal vascular inflammation and angiogenesis, providing opportunities for new therapeutic approaches to ocular neovascular disease.

Ferroptosis, driven by an imbalance in redox homeostasis, has recently been identified to regulate macrophage function and inflammatory responses. SENP3 is a redox-sensitive de-SUMOylation protease that plays an important role in macrophage function. However, doubt remains on whether SENP3 and SUMOylation regulate macrophage ferroptosis. For the first time, the results of our study suggest that SENP3 sensitizes macrophages to RSL3-induced ferroptosis. We showed that SENP3 promotes the ferroptosis of M2 macrophages to decrease M2 macrophage proportion in vivo. Mechanistically, we identified the ferroptosis repressor FSP1 as a substrate for SUMOylation and confirmed that SUMOylation takes place mainly at its K162 site. We found that SENP3 sensitizes macrophages to ferroptosis by interacting with and de-SUMOylating FSP1 at the K162 site. In summary, our study describes a novel type of posttranslational modification for FSP1 and advances our knowledge of the biological functions of SENP3 and SUMOylation in macrophage ferroptosis.

Summary: Depressive symptoms usually precede the cognitive decline in Alzheimer disease (AD) and worsen the clinical outcome. However, the neural circuitry mediating early emotional dysfunction, especially depressive symptoms in AD, remains elusive. Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is closely related to depression and vulnerable in AD. By quantitative whole-brain mapping and electrophysiological recording, we found that the decreased axonal calcium activity in neurons of ACC and the glutamatergic projection from ACC to the ventral hippocampal CA1 (vCA1) is significantly impaired in 3-month-old 5×FAD mice, which exhibit depressive-like phenotype before cognition defects in early stage. The activation of ACC-vCA1 circuit by chemogenetic manipulation efficiently ameliorated the early depressive-like behaviors in 5×FAD mice. We further identified the upregulated neuregulin-1 (Nrg1) in ACC impaired the excitatory synaptic transmission from the ACC to vCA1 in AD. Our work reveals the role of ACC-vCA1 circuit in regulating AD associated depression symptom in a mouse model of AD.

Spintronic devices have become a crucial technology for overcoming the power consumption bottleneck in integrated circuits, due to their low power consumption, high-speed processing capability. Two-dimensional materials offer potential for performance enhancement and device miniaturization in spintronics because of their unique electronic and spin properties. Specifically, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) are favored in the field of spintronics for their strong spin–orbit coupling effects, enabling effective control over the electron spin state. However, the preparation techniques for 2D TMDs are still in the exploratory stage. In this work, we explore novel preparation method combining magnetron sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy, leading to wafer-scale high-quality monocrystalline PtTe2 thin films. Further, Spin-Orbit Torque (SOT) efficiency is investigated in PtTe2-based heterostructures, which reveals a significant spin Hall angle of over 0.094. Our work provides a new way to fabricate the wafer-scale PtTe2 thin films and confirms a large SOT efficiency, which indicates the great promise for spintronic applications.

Summary: Despite the promising outcomes of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), resistance to ICI presents a new challenge. Therefore, selecting patients for specific ICI applications is crucial for maximizing therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we curated 69 human esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients’ tumor microenvironment (TME) single-cell transcriptomic datasets to subtype ESCC. Integrative analyses of the cellular network and transcriptional signatures of T cells and myeloid cells define distinct ESCC subtypes characterized by T cell exhaustion, and interleukin (IL) and interferon (IFN) signaling. Furthermore, this approach classifies ESCC patients into ICI responders and non-responders, as validated by whole tumor transcriptomes and liquid biopsy-based single-cell transcriptomes of anti-PD-1 ICI responders and non-responders. Our study stratifies ESCC patients based on TME transcriptional network, providing novel insights into tumor niche remodeling and potentially predicting ICI responses in ESCC patients.

Ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1), a monomer saponin component, is one of the components with the highest content in total saponins of Panaxnotoginseng. It had various pharmacological effects. The bioavailability of oral tablets is only 1–20 %, and it is eliminated quickly in the blood. The development of new dosage forms and new routes of administration of ginsenoside Rg1 with sustained release and high bioavailability has become a significant problem to be solved. The Rg1 liposomes study used a thin film dispersion ultrasound method for its preparation. This study focused the pharmacokinetic parameters of ginsenoside Rg1 liposomes in rats through the lung perfusion method. Ginsenoside Rg1 liposomes were round and uniform in shape, the particle size was 2–3 μm, and the encapsulation efficiency of ginsenoside Rg1 liposome was 51.2 %. Results showed that, after pulmonary administration of ginsenoside Rg1, the time of ginsenoside Rg1 detected by Rg1 liposomes was longer than that of Rg1 solution, the relative bioavailability of ginsenoside Rg1 liposome lung administration AUC liposome/AUC solution = 122.67 %. These results provided the scientific theoretical and experimental basis for further development of new dosage forms and new routes of administration of ginsenoside Rg1.

ABSTRACT: The processing and analysis of massive high-dimensional datasets are important issues in precision livestock farming (PLF). This study explored the use of multivariate analysis tools to analyze environmental data from multiple sensors located throughout a broiler house. An experiment was conducted to collect a comprehensive set of environmental data including particulate matter (TSP, PM10, and PM2.5), ammonia, carbon dioxide, air temperature, relative humidity, and in-cage and aisle wind speeds from 60 locations in a typical commercial broiler house. The dataset was divided into 3 growth phases (wk 1–3, 4–6, and 7–9). Spearman's correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to investigate the latent associations between environmental variables resulting in the identification of variables that played important roles in indoor air quality. Three cluster analysis methods; k-means, k-medoids, and fuzzy c-means cluster analysis (FCM), were used to group the measured parameters based on their environmental impact in the broiler house. In general, the Spearman and PCA results showed that the in-cage wind speed, aisle wind speed, and relative humidity played critical roles in indoor air quality distribution during broiler rearing. All 3 clustering methods were found to be suitable for grouping data, with FCM outperforming the other 2. Using data clustering, the broiler house spaces were divided into 3, 2, and 2 subspaces (clusters) for wk 1 to 3, 4 to 6, and 7 to 9, respectively. The subspace in the center of the house had a poorer air quality than other subspaces.

Chronic cerebral ischemia (CCI) primarily causes cognitive dysfunction and other neurological impairments, yet there remains a lack of ideal therapeutic medications. The preparation combination of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge and Erigeron breviscapus (Vant.) Hand.-Mazz have been utilized to ameliorate neurological dysfunction following cerebral ischemia, but material basis of its synergy remains unclear. The principal active ingredients and their optimal proportions in this combination have been identified through the oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) cell model, including astragaloside A, chlorogenic acid and scutellarin (ACS), and its efficacy in enhancing the survival of OGD PC12 cells surpasses that of the combination preparation. Nevertheless, mechanism of ACS against CCI remains elusive. In this study, 63 potential targets of ACS against CCI injury were obtained by network pharmacology, among which AKT1, CASP3 and TNF are the core targets. Subsequent analysis utilizing KEGG and GO suggested that PI3K/AKT pathway may play a crucial role for ACS in ameliorating CCI injury. Then, a right unilateral common carotid artery occlusion (rUCCAO) mouse model and an OGD PC12 cell model were established to replicate the pathological processes of CCI in vivo and in vitro. These models were utilized to explore the anti-CCI effects of ACS and its regulatory mechanisms, particularly focusing on PI3K/AKT pathway. The results showed that ACS facilitated the restoration of cerebral blood flow in CCI mice, enhanced the function of the central cholinergic nervous system, protected against ischemic nerve cell and mitochondrial damage, and improved cognitive function and other neurological impairments. Additionally, ACS upregulated the expression of p-PI3K, p-AKT, p-GSK3β and Bcl-2, and diminished the expression of Cyto-c, cleaved Caspase-3 and Bax significantly. However, the PI3K inhibitor (LY294002) partially reversed the downregulation of Bax, Cyto-c and cleaved Caspase-3 expression as well as the upregulation of p-AKT/AKT, p-GSK3β/GSK3β, and Bcl-2/Bax ratios. These findings suggest that ACS against neuronal damage in cerebral ischemia may be closely related to the activation of PI3K/AKT pathway. These results declared first time ACS may become an ideal candidate drug against CCI due to its neuroprotective effects, which are mediated by the activated PI3K/AKT pathway mitigates mitochondrial damage and prevents cell apoptosis.

An oxygen-rich and low NOx burner integrated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) was proposed to address unstable combustion and high NOx emissions from a 330 MW subcritical boiler under ultra-low load operation in China. To assess the effectiveness of the retrofit, Chemkin and Fluent softwares were utilized to construct a new NOx model and calculate NOx generation, based on the combustion of pulverized coal gas and LNG. Further, an eddy dissipation concept (EDC) model, which can reflect detailed chemical reactions, was applied to calculate gas-phase reactions in the furnace. The results showed that when performing the deep peak shaving after the retrofit, the combustion in the furnace was stable under 50% or more load, and NOx emission level at the furnace outlet was lower than 350 mg/m3 (6% O2 content, dry basis). Under 25% load, the oxygen-rich burner integrated with LNG was applied, and the pulverized coal flow entered the furnace in a state of high-intensity combustion, which effectively promoted the stability of combustion in the furnace. The reductive combustion state with reductive free radicals generated by LNG decomposition inhibited NOx formation. Consequently, NOx emissions from the furnace outlet decreased from 380 mg/m3 to 316 mg/m3.

Summary: Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum are major causes of severe diarrhea. Comparative studies of them are hampered by the lack of effective cultivation and cryopreservation methods, especially for C. hominis. Here, we describe adapted murine enteroids for the cultivation and complete development of host-adapted C. parvum and C. hominis subtypes, producing oocysts infectious to mice. Using the system, we developed a cryopreservation method for Cryptosporidium isolates. In comparative RNA-seq analyses of C. hominis cultures, the enteroid system generated significantly more host and pathogen responses than the conventional HCT-8 cell system. In particular, the infection was shown to upregulate PI3K-Akt, Ras, TNF, NF-κB, IL-17, MAPK, and innate immunity signaling pathways and downregulate host cell metabolism, and had significantly higher expression of parasite genes involved in oocyst formation. Therefore, the enteroid system provides a valuable tool for comparative studies of the biology of divergent Cryptosporidium species and isolates.

Background: Physical activity (PA) is widely recommended for preventing and combating obesity, but the most effective PA pattern for treating obesity remains unclear. Cardiometabolic index (CMI), derived from waist height ratio and triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio, is a novel indicator for evaluating obesity. However, the relationship between different PA patterns and CMI remains unelucidated. Objective: This study aimed to explore the association between different PA patterns and CMI in U.S. adults. Methods: Participants with complete information in CMI, PA patterns, and other covariates in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database (2007–2016) were included in this study. Multivariate linear regression models were utilized to explore the relationship between PA patterns and CMI. Moreover, stratified analyses, interaction tests and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression analysis were used to investigate the stability and nonlinearity of the association, respectively. Results: A total of 16,442 adults were included in this study. After adjusting for all potential covariates, only the regularly active group was significantly associated with CMI reduction (β = −0.13, 95% CI: 0.19 to −0.07, P 60, with higher education level, and who are current drinkers. Furthermore, RCS analysis indicated that total PA in a week was significantly, nonlinearly associated with CMI in non-inactive adults, and that a total of PA more than 330 min can reap favorable CMI reduction. Conclusion: Being regularly active is associated with significant CMI reduction, while being weekend warriors and insufficiently active do not achieve equivalent benefits. For non-inactive individuals, engaging in PA for more than 330 min weekly helps to reduce CMI effectively.

An emerging type-II Dirac semimetal PtTe2 exhibits a large potential for spintronic devices due to the high conductivity, high mobility, and good air stability. However, there are few reports on the terahertz emission phenomena in PtTe2 films, which may prohibit the practical application in the future. Here, we successfully prepared high quality two-dimensional (2D) materials PtTe2 and combined it with ferromagnet Fe into heterostructure. Then the spintronic terahertz (THz) emission characteristics of PtTe2/Fe heterostructure excited by ultrafast femtosecond laser were investigated. Our work provides a novel material strategy for spintronic devices, paving the way for researching next-generation optospintronic devices.

Bang Jian has a long-standing history of medicinal use, noted for its detoxifying effects and the treatment of various fevers, laryngitis, and thermal illnesses. Presently, Gentiana veitchiorum and G. szechenyii are the predominant varieties utilized. However, comparative data on their chemical compositions remains scarce. In this study, employing UPLC-Q-TOF/MS metabolomics, conducted a comprehensive comparison of the chemical constituents in G. veitchiorum and G. szechenyii and assessed their antioxidant activities. Results indicated both varieties exhibit significant antioxidant capabilities, with G. szechenyii displaying superior efficacy. The IC50 values for DPPH, Hydroxyl, and ABTS in G. szechenyii were determined to be 0.16, 0.48, and 0.80 mg/mL, respectively. Through UPLC-Q-TOF/MS, 56 compounds were identified, revealing notable differences in metabolite composition between the two species. 24 differential metabolites were identified as potential chemometric markers, facilitating the accurate differentiation of G. veitchiorum and G. szechenyii. Correlation analyses identified six compounds—depressine, szechenyin A, syringic acid, isoorientin-2′'-O-glucopyranoside, isoscoparin 2″-O-glucoside, and naringenin—as significant to the variance in antioxidant activity. These findings enhance our understanding of the phytochemical and antioxidant properties of G. veitchiorum and G. szechenyii, offering a theoretical foundation for their clinical application.
