Long non-coding RNAs and microRNAs control gene expression to determine central nervous system development and function. Neuronal growth regulator 1 (NEGR1) is a cell adhesion molecule that plays an important role in neurite outgrowth during neuronal development and its precise expression is crucial for correct brain development. The data described here is related to the research article titled “A long non-coding RNA, BC048612 and a microRNA, miR-203 coordinate the gene expression of Neuronal growth regulator 1 (NEGR1) adhesion protein” [1]. This data article contains detailed bioinformatics analysis of genetic signatures at the Negr1 gene locus retrieved from the UCSC genome browser. Venoms and toxins are of significant interest due to their ability to cause a wide range of pathophysiological conditions that can potentially result in death. Despite their wide distribution among plants and animals, the biochemical pathways associated with these pathogenic agents remain largely unexplored. Impoverished and underdeveloped regions appear especially susceptible to increased incidence and severity due to poor socioeconomic conditions and lack of appropriate medical treatment infrastructure. To facilitate better management and treatment of envenomation victims, it is essential that the biochemical mechanisms of their action be elucidated. This review aims to characterize downstream envenomation mechanisms by addressing the major neuro-, cardio-, and hemotoxins as well as ion-channel toxins. Because of their use in folk and traditional medicine, the biochemistry behind venom therapy and possible implications on conventional medicine will also be addressed.

Publisher Summary The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex is a multienzyme complex catalyzing the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate to acetyl coenzyme (CoA). This chapter describes the assay method and properties of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex isolated from Bacillus . The structural organization of the bacillar complex differs substantially from that of E. coli and of other prokaryotes. Bacillus spp . is gram-positive and the enzymes of some species are thermostable. The purification of the enzyme complexes of B. subtilis and B. stearothermophilus by using affinity chromatography and some properties of the complexes are also described in the chapter. The enzyme complex is assayed spectrophotometrically by following the keto acid-dependent reduction of either 3-acetylpyridine nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD + ) or NAD + at 366 nm or 340 nm. NAD + is preferred in the assay because it is cheaper than 3-acetylpyridine NAD + . In crude extracts, 3-acetylpyridine NAD + is preferred because of the interference of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase (NADH) oxidase in the NAD + assay. The recovery of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex on ethanol–Sepharose 2B starting with crude extract is generally high.
