Background: Colonoscopy is one of the primary methods of screening for colorectal cancer (CRC), a leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States. However, up to half of patients referred to colonoscopy fail to complete the procedure, and rates of adherence are lower in rural areas., Objectives: Colonoscopy Outreach for Rural Communities (CORC) is a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of a centralized patient navigation program provided remotely by a community-based organization to six geographically distant primary care organizations serving rural patients, to improve colonoscopy completion for CRC., Methods: CORC is a type 1 hybrid implementation-effectiveness trial. Participants aged 45-76 from six primary care organizations serving rural populations in the northwestern United States are randomized 1:1 to patient navigation or standard of care control. The patient navigation is delivered remotely by a trained lay-person from a community-based organization. The primary effectiveness outcome is completion of colonoscopy within one year of referral to colonoscopy. Secondary outcomes are colonoscopy completion within 6 and 9 months, time to completion, adequacy of patient bowel preparation, and achievement of cecal intubation. Analyses will be stratified by primary care organization., Discussion: Trial results will add to our understanding about the effectiveness of patient navigation programs to improve colonoscopy for CRC in rural communities. Introduction: ROSSEY is a community-academic partnership aiming to develop and test a COVID-19 risk communication intervention for elementary school students and families in Yakima County, Washington. We describe the ROSSEY study protocol that will be implemented in the Yakima School District., Methods: Aim 1 is to identify the community's social, ethical, and behavioral needs and resources for students to return to school and maintain onsite learning. We will conduct semi-structured interviews with students and school employees and focus groups with parents. Aim 2 is to evaluate the effectiveness of risk communication on students' school attendance. We will conduct a cluster randomized control trial. We will enroll 14 Yakima School District elementary schools with 900 student participants and randomize the schools into the COVID-19 risk communication intervention or control group. Aim 3 will assess implementation of the risk communication intervention and schools' COVID-19 mitigation strategies. We will use the RE-AIM framework to guide this work, which will entail conducting semi-structured interviews with students and school employees and focus groups with parents., Discussion: Implementation of science-based risk communication can educate the community on the benefits and safety of COVID-19 testing and vaccination. Risk communication may also inform families about the role of COVID-19 testing and vaccines as part of mitigation strategies to allow for safe in-person learning. Schools have extraordinary influence to promote children's health through policy and practice change. Background: While Hispanic children experience large long-term disparities in disability after traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), there is a gap in evidenced-based interventions to improve outcomes among this rapidly growing and at high-risk population. We developed and pilot tested a bilingual/bicultural intervention informed by Hispanic families consisting of Brain Injury Education and outpatient Navigation (1st BIEN). It integrates bilingual in-person education enriched by video content delivered through mobile phone devices, with outpatient navigation by bilingual and bicultural navigators during transitions of care and school return., Methods: Randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of 1st BIEN to maintain long-term adherence to rehabilitation and determine its effect on children's functional outcomes. The primary outcome is treatment adherence at 6 months post-discharge at centralized acute facilities and community providers. Secondary outcomes are functional status of the child using PROMIS parental report measures and parental health literacy, self-efficacy, and mental health; measured at baseline (pre-injury and discharge) 3-,6- and 12- months post discharge. Children's academic performance is assessed using school records the year before and the year after injury., Discussion: Our study evaluates a novel, flexible and scalable approach using mobile phone devices to aid transitions of care, increase treatment adherence and improve TBI outcomes. It addresses the needs of an understudied population and builds upon their strengths. It is implemented by a bilingual and bicultural team with a deep understanding of the study population. Background: Home-based testing for COVID-19 has potential to reduce existing health care disparities among underserved populations in the United States. However, implementation of home-based tests in these communities may face significant barriers. This study evaluates the acceptability, feasibility, and success of home-based testing and the potential added benefit of active support from trusted community health workers for Native Americans and Hispanic/Latino adults living in rural Montana and Washington states., Methods/design: The academic-community research team designed the trial to be responsive to community needs for understanding barriers and supports to home-based COVID-19 testing. The "Protecting Our Community" study is a two-arm pragmatic randomized controlled trial in which a total of 400 participants are randomized to active or passive arms. Participants of both study arms receive a commercially available home collection COVID-19 test kit, which is completed by mailing a self-collected nasal swab to a central laboratory. The primary study outcome is return of the kit to the central lab within 14 days. The cultural, social, behavioral, and economic barriers to home-based COVID-19 testing are also assessed by qualitative research methods. A survey and semi-structured interviews are conducted after the trial to evaluate perceptions and experience of home-based testing., Discussion: Implementing home-based testing in underserved populations, including among Native American and Hispanic/Latino communities, may require additional support to be successful. Background: Hispanic children are disproportionally overweight and obese compared to their non-Hispanic white counterparts in the US. Community-wide, multi-level interventions have been successful to promote healthier nutrition, increased physical activity (PA), and weight loss. Using community-based participatory approach (CBPR) that engages community members in rural Hispanic communities is a promising way to promote behavior change, and ultimately weight loss among Hispanic children., Objectives: Led by a community-academic partnership, the Together We STRIDE (Strategizing Together Relevant Interventions for Diet and Exercise) aims to test the effectiveness of a community-wide, multi-level intervention to promote healthier diets, increased PA, and weight loss among Hispanic children., Methods: The Together We STRIDE is a parallel quasi-experimental trial with a goal of recruiting 900 children aged 8-12 years nested within two communities (one intervention and one comparison). Children will be recruited from their respective elementary schools. Components of the 2-year multi-level intervention include comic books (individual-level), multi-generational nutrition and PA classes (family-level), teacher-led PA breaks and media literacy education (school-level), family nights, a farmer's market and a community PA event (known as ciclovia) at the community-level. Children from the comparison community will receive two newsletters. Height and weight measures will be collected from children in both communities at three time points (baseline, 6-months, and 18-months)., Summary: The Together We STRIDE study aims to promote healthier diet and increased PA to produce healthy weight among Hispanic children. The use of CBPR approach and the engagement of the community will springboard strategies for intervention' sustainability. Objective: To evaluate the impact of an 8-week community-based nutrition education program combined with food baskets on fruit and vegetable consumption (FVC) among Latinos., Design: Pre-post intervention study assessing perceived barriers, knowledge, food efficacy, food outcomes, and FVC, using mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative)., Setting: Participants' recruitment and data collection took place in the Seattle Metropolitan area from September 2012 to July 2013., Participants: Participants' (n = 40) mean age was 37.8 (±10.5) years. Participants were mostly women, from Mexico, uninsured, low income, and overweight or obese., Intervention: Nuestras Comidas was developed through the use of the Social Cognitive Theory and focused on increasing behavioral capability, food efficacy, food outcomes, and FVC., Main Outcome Measure: Dependent variables were knowledge, perceived barriers, food efficacy, food outcomes, and FVC. Independent variable was the intervention (pre-post)., Statistical Analyses: A McNemar exact test was computed for categorical variables and Wilcoxon signed-rank test and paired t test for continuous variables.
