The work aims to estimate natural greenhouse gas emissions from soils in the Sibari Coastal Plain (Southern Italy), to understand (i) the contribution in terms of the total amount of CO 2 and CH 4 emitted in non-volcanic areas, (ii) the relationship among emitted gas, land use, organic matter and tectonic structures, and (iii) their potential environmental implications. Data were elaborated with statistical and geostatistical methods to separate the different populations and obtain prediction and probability maps. Methane fluxes had values consistently below the detection limit (0.032 g ∙ m -2 ∙ d -1 ) except for three measurement points randomly distributed along the plain. Statistical and geostatistical methods allowed to discriminate three main CO 2 flux populations: (i) high-flux population (Pop. B - mean value of 63.65 g ∙ m -2 ∙ d -1 ), located near the mouth of the Crati River and related to the massive presence of buried organic matter in the form of peat; (ii) medium-flux population (Pop. A2 - mean value of 8.37 g ∙ m -2 ∙ d -1 ) which is the result of soil respiration, and (iii) low-flux population (Pop. A1 - mean value of 1.85 g ∙ m -2 ∙ d -1 ) due to areas where low permeability or increases in saturated aquifer thickness may control the overall flux. In the study area, a total CO 2 emission of about 2671 t ∙ d -1 was calculated, which, if compared to the average total flux expected for simple soil respiration (1284 t ∙ d -1 ), represents a non-negligible value in the total Carbon balance. Finally, the comparison with representative normalized fluxes from volcanic and non-volcanic areas confirms the critical role of coastal plains in total atmospheric CO 2 emissions. This article provides a review of published literature on the concentration levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in asbestos minerals like chrysotile, actinolite, amosite (asbestiform grunerite), anthophyllite, crocidolite (asbestiform riebeckite) and tremolite and their potential to release PTEs into groundwaters worldwide. A large number of PTEs, such as Fe, Cr, Ni, Mn, Co and Zn, may be hosted by asbestos minerals, and their release in the lung environment can cause different health problems as well as their intake via drinking water. The review highlights that amosite is the phase with the highest PTEs content, followed by crocidolite, actinolite, anthophyllite, tremolite and chrysotile. Chrysotile, tremolite, and anthophyllite contain higher levels of Cr, Ni, and Co, while Fe and Mn are more enriched in amosite and crocidolite. Actinolite contains a high concentration of all considered PTEs. High levels of Cr, Fe, Zn, Mn, and Ni were also detected in groundwater interacting with ophiolite rocks containing asbestos minerals. The three main recognized hydro-geochemical facies (Mg-HCO 3 , Ca-HCO 3 and Ca-OH), characterizing the ophiolite aquifers, show high levels of Cr and Ni, with values sometimes above the World health Organization (WHO) thresholds for drinking waters, which can cause adverse health effects in short and long term. In the last decades, many researchers investigated the relation between environmental pollution and the degradation phenomena on the built heritage, because of their rapid increase and growing harmfulness. Consequently, the identification of the main pollution sources has become essential to define mitigation actions against degradation and alteration phenomena of the stone materials. In this way, the present paper is focused on the study of the effect of air pollution on archaeological buildings in Historic Cairo. A multi-methodological approach was used to obtain information about the chemical composition of examined black crusts and to clarify their correlation with the air pollution, specifically the heavy metals and the carbonaceous fraction, their main sources, and their impact on the state of conservation of the studied sites. All specimens were characterized by polarized optical microscopy (POM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Electron Probe Micro Analyser coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EPMA-EDS), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The study conducted on heavy metals and carbonaceous fraction showed that the greatest contribution of the accumulation of pollutants is attributable to vehicular traffic and industrial activities, the main polluting sources in Cairo city. Furthermore, the comparison with other studies conducted on the carbonaceous fraction in the black crusts coming from both European and non-European cities, has allowed to discriminate the contribution of the primary and secondary polluting sources. This study examines the deterioration of geomaterials used throughout history that today may be found lying on the ocean floor. Submerged archaeological sites including cargoes from shipwrecks or ancient city ruins have been a topic of interest from a perspective of in situ musealization, as a way of making underwater cultural heritage accessible to the public. In an experimental study conducted at an underwater archaeological site in the Bay of Cádiz (SW Spain), we subjected two types of marble (Carrara and Macael) to three conditions to which submerged archaeological objects are often exposed: full exposure to the water column, natural processes of burial and unearthing, or permanent burial. After an 18-month study period, the factor found to mostly affect these materials was their biological colonization. This factor was assessed by estimating total surface biocover and the rate of surface biocolonization, and also through the identification of skeletons and associated alteration forms by light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Biofouling and bioerosion were the main causes of biodeterioration and dependent on the position of the marble specimens in the seawater. The response of both materials was similar, though dolomite crystals in the Carrara marble acted as a protective barrier against actively penetrating microorganisms. These investigations have allowed the study of tracers left by epilithic encrusting organisms and endolithic bioeroders on marbles intentionally exposed to seawater, providing new insights to the understanding of the biodeterioration processes occurring in cultural heritage stones, with significant implications when they are part of underwater archaeological remains., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. This paper deals with the analysis of black crust coming from the statue of Oceanus belonging to the Fontana di Trevi (Rome). This monument is undoubtedly one of the main touristic attractions of Rome. During the restoration held between 2014 and 2015, some diagnostic analyses had been carried out. It has been highlighted that the sheltered surfaces suffer the formation of black crust, especially on the marble statues. The possibility to sample those degradation products, together with the unaltered substrate, represented an excellent opportunity to characterize the marble itself, to assess the impact of the urban air pollution on the stone material, and to detect the pollutant on a precise timescale. In fact, it is known that the previous restoration of the fountain had been carried out between 1989 and 1991 then, information about the air pollution over the last 25years can be highlighted, because it has been proved that black crusts act as passive samplers of pollution. In order to fully characterize those samples, several techniques were used, including optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and ion chromatography. Furthermore, a new methodology based on CHN (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen) analysis has been developed for the quantification of the two main constituents of the carbonaceous fraction present in the black crusts, i.e. OC (organic carbon) and EC (elemental carbon). This integrated approach proposed in the present study allowed us to gain information about the mineralogical phases and the elements within the crusts and at the crust-substrate interface, giving the possibility to identify the pollution sources causing the stone decay within the monument., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. The Cathedral of Seville is one of the most important buildings in the whole of southern Spain. It suffers, like most of the historical buildings located in urban environments, from several degradation phenomena related to the high pollution level. Undoubtedly, the formation of black crusts plays a crucial role in the decay of the stone materials belonging to the church. Their formation occurs mainly on carbonate building materials, whose interaction with a sulfur oxide-enriched atmosphere leads to the transformation of calcium carbonate (calcite) into calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) which, together with embedded carbonaceous particles, forms the black crusts on the stone surface. To better understand the composition and the formation dynamics of this degradation product and to identify the pollutant sources and evaluate their impact on the stone material, an analytical study was carried out on the black crust samples collected from different areas of the building. For a complete characterization of the black crusts, several techniques were used, including laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, micro infrared spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopy. This battery of tests provided information about the nature and distribution of the mineralogical phases and the elements within the crusts and the crust-substrate interface, contributing to the identification of the major pollution sources responsible for the deterioration of the monument over time. In addition, the results revealed a relation among the height of sampling, the surface exposure and the concentration of heavy metals.
