The sulfur (S) cycle is an important biogeochemical cycle with profound implications for both cellular- and ecosystem-level processes by diverse microorganisms. Mangrove sediments are a hotspot of biogeochemical cycling, especially for the S cycle with high concentrations of S compounds. Previous studies have mainly focused on some specific inorganic S cycling processes without paying specific attention to the overall S-cycling communities and processes as well as organic S metabolism. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the distribution, ecological network and assembly mechanisms of S cycling microbial communities and their changes with sediment depths using metagenome sequencing data. The results showed that the abundance of gene families involved in sulfur oxidation, assimilatory sulfate reduction, and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) cleavage and demethylation decreased with sediment depths, while those involved in S reduction and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) transformation showed an opposite trend. Specifically, glpE, responsible for converting S 2 O 3 2- to SO 3 2- , showed the highest abundance in the surface sediment and decreased with sediment depths; in contrast, high abundances of dmsA, responsible for converting dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to DMS, were identified and increased with sediment depths. We identified Pseudomonas and Streptomyces as the main S-cycling microorganisms, while Thermococcus could play an import role in microbial network connections in the S-cycling microbial community. Our statistical analysis showed that both taxonomical and functional compositions were generally shaped by stochastic processes, while the functional composition of organic S metabolism showed a transition from stochastic to deterministic processes. As the strategic importance of Li in the energy sector increases, selective Li extraction technology from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is attracting increasing attention. Current Li extraction processes typically suffer from lengthy procedures, high costs, and low efficiency. To improve the efficiency of Li extraction, a novel approach to achieve efficient Li recovery is proposed in this study, namely, reacting pyrite (FeS 2 ) with LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (NCM) powder in a subcritical water reduction (SWR) system. The reducing solvent environment created by the enhanced reaction of FeS 2 with subcritical water converts the high-valent metals in NCM to a low-valent state, causing the collapse of the stable laminar structure and allowing Li + to be released smoothly. After dual activation through mechanochemical and roasting processes, more than 99 % of Li is preferentially extracted under optimal conditions. Furthermore, Li + in solution is converted into highly pure Li 2 CO 3 , while other metallic elements remain in the residue. Skin-electronic interfaces have broad applications in fields such as diagnostics, therapy, health monitoring, and smart wearables. However, they face various challenges in practical use. For instance, in wet environments, the cohesion of the material may be compromised, and under dynamic conditions, maintaining conformal adhesion becomes difficult, leading to reduced sensitivity and fidelity of electrical signal transmission. The key scientific issue lies in forming a stable and tight mechanical-electronic coupling at the tissue-electronic interface. Here, inspired by octopus sucker structures and snail mucus, we propose a strategy for hydrogel skin-electronic interfaces based on multi-coupled bioinspired adhesion and introduce an ultrasound (US)-mediated interfacial toughness enhancement mechanism. Ultimately, using digital light processing micro-nano additive manufacturing technology (DLP 3D), we have developed a multifunctional, diagnostic-therapeutic integrated patch (PAMS). This patch exhibits moderate water swelling properties, a maximum deformation of up to 460 %, high sensitivity (GF=4.73), and tough and controllable bioadhesion (shear strength increased by 109.29 %). Apart from outstanding mechanical and electronic properties, the patch also demonstrates good biocompatibility, anti-bacterial properties, photothermal properties, and resistance to freezing at -20°C. Experimental results show that this skin-electronic interface can sensitively monitor temperature, motion, and electrocardiogram signals. Utilizing a rat frostbite model, we have demonstrated that this skin-electronic interface can effectively accelerate the wound healing process as a wound patch. This research offers a promising strategy for improving the performance of bioelectronic devices and personalized diagnostics and therapeutics in the future. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Establishing stable and tight mechanical-electronic coupling at the tissue-electronic interface is essential for the diverse applications of bioelectronic devices. The patch is based on a multi-coupled bioinspired adhesive-enhanced mechanism, allowing for personalized 3D printing customization. Interfacial solar evaporation shows great potential in clean water production, emulsions separation, and high-salinity brine treatment. However, it remains challenging for the evaporators to maintain a high evaporation rate in the high-salinity emulsions due to the co-pollution of salt and oil. Herein, we first proposed a hierarchic double-Janus solar evaporator (HDJE) with a hydrophobic salt-rejecting top layer and oil-rejecting bottom layer. Compared to the traditional one, HDJE could treat industrial high-salinity oil-in-water emulsions stably for over 70 h, with a stable average evaporation rate of 1.73 kg m -2 h -1 and a high purification efficiency of up to 99.8 % for oil and ions. It was also verified that HDJE could be used for high-efficiency purification of oily concentrated seawater outdoor. An average water production rate of 3.59 kg m -2 d -1 and a TOC removal ratio of over 98 % was obtained. Sulfamethoxazole is a representative of sulfonamide antibiotic pollutants. This study aims to investigate the degradation pathways of sulfamethoxazole and the response of microbial communities using the autotrophic biocathode in microbial photo-electrolysis systems (MPESs). Sulfamethoxazole with an initial concentration of 2 mg L -1 was degraded into small molecule propanol within 6 h with the biocathode. Elemental sulfur (S 0 ) was detected in the cathode chamber, accounting for 57 % of the removed sulfate. The conversion from sulfate to S 0 indicated that autotrophic microorganisms might adopt a novel pathway for sulfamethoxazole removal in the MPES. In the abiotic cathode, sulfamethoxazole degradation rate was 0.09 mg L -1  h -1 with the electrochemistry process. However, sulfamethoxazole was converted to products that still contain benzene rings, including p-aminothiophenol, 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole, and sulfonamide. The microbial community analysis indicated that the synergistic interaction of Desulfovibrio and Acetobacterium promoted the autotrophic degradation of sulfamethoxazole. Nutrient recovery from anaerobic digestate through electrodialysis technology (ED) has been investigated and shown high promise, but the removal of 17β-estradiol (E2), which is a natural estrogen and widely found in manure digestate, is not clear. This study examined the mechanism of membrane adsorption and anodic oxidation of E2 during recovering nutrient from manure digestate, and further investigated the performance of Anode-ED in E2 removal. The results showed that the removal of E2 in conventional ED was primarily attributed to membrane adsorption, resulting in no detectable E2 in the product solution. The adsorption capacity of the anion exchange membrane for E2 was significantly higher compared to that of the cation exchange membrane. During Anode-ED operation, E2 was efficiently removed by electrochemical oxidation, in which the chlorination played a primary role. Moreover, the oxidation intermediates of E2 were further removed after 40 min. Even though the carbonate, volatile fatty acid (VFA), and humic acid in the real wastewater have a negative impact on E2 oxidation, the E2 was completely removed from digestate during nutrient recovery in the anode-ED. Photoconversion of tetracycline (TC) has been widely reported. However, the effect of microplastics (MPs) on TC conversion kinetics and mechanism has rarely been discussed. In this study, we investigated the effect of (aged) MPs on TC degradation under simulated sunlight and elucidated the underlying mechanism. Our findings demonstrated that the physical and chemical properties of polystyrene (PS), such as particle size, surface groups, and morphology, were significantly altered after aging. Moreover, photoconversion efficiency of TC was suppressed with the spiking of aged PS, while virgin PS showed an opposite tendency. The photodegradation reaction for photosensitization of PS involved 1 O 2 and HO·. The light-screening effect of aged PS occupied predominance, weakening the direct UV-light absorption of TC and resulting in lower TC degradation efficiency. Additionally, triplet-excited state PS was generated after photon acceptance by aged PS, which could transfer energy to O 2 , leading to the production of 1 O 2 . The toxicity test manifested that the direct impact of TC products on fathead minnow was ignorable, but long-term negative effects on growth deserved observation. Biohybrid magnetic microrobots (BMMs) have emerged as an exciting class of microrobots and have been considered as a promising platform in biomedicine. Many microorganisms and body's own cells show intriguing properties, such as morphological characteristics, biosafety, and taxis abilities (e.g., chemotaxis, aerotaxis), which have made them attractive for the fabrication of microrobots. For remote controllability and sustainable actuation, magnetic components are usually incorporated onto these biological entities, and other functionalized non-biological components (e.g., therapeutic agents) are also included for specific applications. This review highlights the latest developments in BMMs with a focus on their biomedical applications. It starts by introducing the fundamental understanding of the propulsion system at the microscale in a magnetically driven manner, followed by a summary of diverse BMMs based on different microorganisms and body's own cells along with their relevant applications. Finally, the review discusses how BMMs contribute to the advancements of microrobots, the current challenges of using BMMs in practical clinical settings, and the future perspectives of this exciting field. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biohybrid magnetic microrobots (BMMs), composed of biological entities and functional parts, hold great potential and serve as a novel and promising platform for biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery. The aim of this study was to investigate the ecological role of quorum-sensing signaling molecule on the autotrophic biocathode for CO 2 reduction and acetate synthesis. As a typical quorum-sensing signaling molecule, N-Hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (C6HSL) was used to regulate the construction of cathode biofilm. Results showed that the maximum acetate production from CO 2 reduction improved by 94.8%, and the maximum Faraday efficiency of the microbial electrosynthesis system enhanced by 71.7%, with the regulation of C6HSL. Electrochemical analyses indicated that higher electrochemical activity and lower charge resistance of biocathode were obtained with C6HSL than without C6HSL. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron inhibitor experiment suggested that exogenous C6HSL increased living biomass in the biofilm and facilitated the electron transfer pathway related to NADH dehydrogenase-CoQ and proton motive force. This study aimed to reveal the synergistic effect of bioanode and biocathode on nitrobenzene (NB) removal with different microbial community structures and functions. Single-chamber bioelectrochemical reactors were constructed and operated with different initial concentrations of NB and glucose as the substrate. With the synergistic effect of biocathode and bioanode, NB was completely removed within 8 h at a kinetic rate constant of 0.8256 h -1 , and high conversion rate from NB to AN (92%) was achieved within 18 h. The kinetic rate constant of NB removal was linearly correlated with the maximum current density and total coulombs (R 2 > 0.95). Increase of glucose and NB concentrations had significantly positive and negative effects, respectively, on the NB removal kinetics (R 2 > 0.97 and R 2 > 0.93, respectively). Geobacter sp. and Enterococcus sp. dominated in the bioanode and biocathode, respectively. The presence of Klebsiella pneumoniae in the bioanode was beneficial for Geobacter species to produce electricity and to alleviate the NB inhibition. As one of the dominant species at the biocathode, Methanobacterium formicicum has the ability of nitroaromatics degradation according to KEGG analysis, which played a crucial role for NB reduction. Fermentative bacteria converted glucose into volatile fatty acids or H 2 , to provide energy sources to other species (e.g., Geobacter sulfurreducens and Methanobacterium formicicum). The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between spatial distribution of Geobacter and electric intensity in the microbial electrolysis desalination and chemical-production cell (MEDCC) and to investigate the effect of enlarged volumetric anode on the performance of MEDCC. The MEDCC was constructed with nine carbon brush anodes (length × diameter = 11 cm × 3 cm) as enlarged volumetric anode, and operated by feeding with 1 g/L acetate as substrate and 35 g/L NaCl as artificial seawater under the applied voltages of 1.2-4.5 V. Spatial distribution of Geobacter in the anodic biofilm was determined according to the bacterial community analysis on 27 biofilm samples from the top, middle and bottom layers of anodes (i.e., with distance of 4.5, 10, and 15.5 cm to the cathode, respectively). Results showed that the enlarged volumetric anode significantly improved the performance of MEDCC. The maximum desalination rate and current density reached 338.5 ± 21.8 mg/L∙h and 55.7 ± 3.7 A/m 2 in the MEDCC, respectively. The electric intensity values decreased with the distance from the anode to the cathode and formed an uneven distribution in the anode chamber. The samples in the top layer of anodes had the highest average 16S rRNA gene copy number of Geobacter of 1.55 × 10 7 copies/μL, which was 18 times higher than that in the bottom layer of anodes. A linear relation was established between the spatial distribution of Geobacter and electric intensity (R 2 = 0.994-0.999). The electric intensity gradient created the uneven spatial distribution of Geobacter in the biofilms of volumetric anode. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of sulfate removal and elemental sulfur (S 0 ) recovery in the single-chamber bioelectrochemical system (S-BES). The performance of S-BES was compared with that of dual-chamber bioelectrochemical system (D-BES). The S-BES was constructed with graphite felt as the anode and graphite brush as the cathode. The D-BES was constructed with proton exchange membrane as the separator between anode and cathode chambers. With an applied voltage of 1.0 V and 1 g/L acetate as the substrate, the S-BES and D-BES were tested by feeding with 480 mg/L SO 4 2- in the phosphate buffer. Results showed that the maximum current density of 37.6 ± 4.5 mA/m 3 was reached in the S-BES, which was higher than that in the D-BES (i.e., 22.2 ± 2.6 mA/m 3 ). The SO 4 2- removal was much higher in the S-BES than in the D-BES (99.5% vs. 57.2%). In the effluent and the electrodes of S-BES, S 0 was identified with Raman and X- Ray diffraction analyses. The S 0 recovery on the anode was 13.7 times of that on the cathode of S-BES, indicating that S 0 was mainly produced on the anode. The measured total S 0 recovery reached 67.5% in the S-BES. High relative abundance of Desulfurella (47.1%) and Geobacter (26.1%) dominated the community in the anode biofilm of S-BES. The excellent performance of S-BES may be attributed to the neutral pH in the solution and the synergistic reaction between the anode and cathode. The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of single-chamber MEC under applied voltages higher than that for water electrolysis. With different acetate concentrations (1.0-2.0 g/L), the MEC was tested under applied voltages from 0.8 to 2.2 V within 2600 h (54 cycles). Results showed that the MEC was stably operated for the first time within 20 cycles under 2.0 and 2.2 V, compared with the control MEC with significant water electrolysis. The maximum current density reached 27.8 ± 1.4 A/m 2 under 2.0 V, which was about three times as that under 0.8 V. The anode potential in the MEC could be kept at 0.832 ± 0.110 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) under 2.2 V, thus without water electrolysis in the MEC. High applied voltage of 1.6 V combined with alkaline solution (pH = 11.2) could result in high hydrogen production and high current density. The maximum current density of MEC at 1.6 V and pH = 11.2 reached 42.0 ± 10.0 A/m 2 , which was 1.85 times as that at 1.6 V and pH = 7.0. The average hydrogen content reached 97.2% of the total biogas throughout all the cycles, indicating that the methanogenesis was successfully inhibited in the MEC at 1.6 V and pH = 11.2. With high hydrogen production rate and current density, the size and investment of MEC could be significantly reduced under high applied voltages. Elemental sulfur recover from sulfate-rich environment has great significance for the sustainable development of environment and energy. This study aimed to realize simultaneous sulfate reduction and elemental sulfur recovery using a novel photoelectricity microbial electrolysis cell (PMEC) under low applied voltages. At an applied voltage of 1.2 V, the sulfate reduction rate in the PMEC reached 200 ± 2.3 mg L -1  d -1 , and 46.3 ± 7.9% of the reduced sulfate converted to elemental sulfur. With increasing voltages from 0.8 to 1.5 V, the sulfate reduction rates enhanced from 37.8 ± 12.4 to 236 ± 18.1 mg L -1  d -1 . The recovery efficiency of elemental sulfur from removed sulfate decreased to 35% at 1.5 V, which was attributed to the higher concentration of dissolved oxygen diffusing from the anode side. Sulfate reducing bacteria (including Desulfovibrio and Desulfomicrobium) cooperated with sulfur oxidizing bacteria (including Thiomonas and Acinetobacter) for recovering elemental sulfur that could be regulated by cathode configuration. This study aimed to enhance treatment of wastewater containing nitrobenzene (NB) and sulfate using biocathode enriched with sulfate-reducing bacteria in microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). Artificial wastewater with 50 mg L -1 NB and 200 mg L -1 sulfate was used as the catholyte. With 0.8 V applied voltage, removal efficiencies of NB and sulfate reached 98% and 34%, respectively, within 36 h. Aniline and sulfide were the main reductive products in the catholyte with concentrations increased to 0.32 and 0.51 mM, which accounted for 97% and 78% of the removed NB and sulfate, respectively. Sulfate-reducer Desulfovibrio sp. and Wolinella sp. played the dominant role in the biocathode for the reductions of sulfate and NB. Analyses of scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the formation of elemental S on the biocathode surface. The relative abundance of sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Thioclava sp. reached 24% on the biocathode. The results indicated that the oxidation process from S 2- to S 0 occurred on the biocathode, which provided electrons to biofilm for NB reduction. The aim of this study was to investigate the development of microbial community within the cathodic biofilm of single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC). To analyze microbial community structures within cathodic biofilm, cathodic biofilm samples were stratified into three layers, i.e., the cathode-side layer (0-40 μm), the middle layer (40-80 μm), and the anolyte-side layer (80-120 μm). After four starting cycles (0-188 h), the maximum power densities of the MFC fed with 1 g/L acetate decreased from 1056 ± 110 to 410 ± 50 mW/m 2 within 15 cycles (~30 d) of operation. The relative abundance of Pseudomonas gradually increased from 18.9% in the 1st cycle to 50.2% in the 4th cycle. After 15 cycles, the relative abundance of Pseudomonas became 53.8%, 16.4%, and 8.90% in the middle, anolyte-side, and cathode-side layers, respectively. The aerobic bacteria within the cathodic biofilm increased from 24% in the anodyte-side layer to 43% in the cathode-side layer. The relative abundance of Methanobrevibacter was 42.1% and 37.2% after 3 and 15 cycles, respectively. The bacterial community structures were similar among cycles 2, 3, and 4, but significantly different in the 15th cycle. Recently, interactions between one-dimensional structural stiffness of physical micro environments and cell biological process have been widely studied. However in previous studies, the influence of structural stiffness on biological process was coupled with the influence of micro fiber curvature. Therefore decoupling the influences of fiber curvature and structural stiffness on cell biological process is of prime importance. In this study, we proposed a novel cell culture substrate comprised of silicon nitride bridges whose structure stiffness can be regulated by altering the axial residual stress without changing material and geometry properties. Both theoretical calculations and finite element simulations were performed to study the influence of residual stress on structure stiffness of bridges. Then multi-positions AFM bending tests were implemented to measure local stiffness of a single micro bridge so as to verify our predictions. NIH/3T3 mouse fibroblast cells were cultured on our substrates to examine the feasibility of the substrate application for investigating cellular response to microenvironment with variable stiffness. The results showed that cells on the edge region near bridge ends were more spread, elongated and better aligned along the bridge axial direction than those on the bridge center region. The results suggest that cells can sense and respond to the differences of stiffness and stiffness gradient between the edge and the center region of the bridges, which makes this kind of substrates can be applied in some biomedical fields, such as cell migration and wound healing., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this study was to develop microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) with a novel acidophilic and autotrophic biocathode for treatment of acid wastewater. A biocathode was developed using acidophilic sulfate-reducing bacteria as the catalyst. Artificial wastewater with 200mgL(-1) sulfate and different Zn concentrations (0, 15, 25, and 40 mg L(-1)) was used as the MEC catholyte. The acidophilic biocathode dominated by Desulfovibrio sp. with an abundance of 66% (with 82% of Desulfovibrio sequences similar to Desulfovibrio simplex) and achieved a considerable sulfate reductive rate of 32 gm(-3)d(-1). With 15 mg L(-1) Zn added, the sulfate reductive rate of MEC improved by 16%. The formation of ZnS alleviated the inhibition from sulfide and sped the sulfate reduction. With 15 and 25 mgL(-1) Zn added, more than 99% of Zn was removed from the wastewater. Dissolved Zn ions in the catholyte were converted into insoluble Zn compounds, such as zinc sulfide and zinc hydroxide, due to the sulfide and elevated pH produced by sulfate reduction. The aim of this study was to utilize the microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) for metal removal from acid mine drainage (AMD) and simultaneous H2 production. A dual-chamber MEC was developed to concurrently produce H2 and remove Cu(2+), Ni(2+), and Fe(2+) from AMD under single and mixed metal conditions. With an applied voltage of 1.0V, Cu(2+) in the AMD was prior to others to be recovered at the cathode, followed by Ni(2+), and finally Fe(2+). The H2 production rates achieved during the AMD treatment were in the range of 0.4-1.1m(3)m(-3)d(-1), and the highest rate was obtained with the AMD containing single Cu(2+). The highest efficiency of cathode electron recovery reached 89%, which was obtained with the AMD containing mixed metals. The recovered electrons were used for both H2 production and metal reduction. The energy recovery efficiency of MEC reached up to 100%, suggesting that H2 generated from AMD was sufficient to offset the energy input during the treatment. Indole is a typical refractory and inhibitory compound present in coking wastewater. The aim of this study was to investigate possible electricity generation with indole degradation in the microbial fuel cell (MFC). Experiments were conducted in two types of the MFC: a continuous-fed MFC (C-MFC) and a batch-fed MFC (B-MFC). In the C-MFC, the maximum power densities reached 45.4, 51.2, and 2.1 W/m(3), respectively, from using 1000 mg/L glucose, a mixture of 1000 mg/L glucose and 250 mg/L indole, and 250 mg/L indole as the fuel. When using 250 mg/L indole as the fuel, the removal efficiency of indole was up to 88% within 3 h. Increasing indole concentrations from 250 to 1500 mg/L resulted in decrease of the maximum power densities from 2.1 to 0.8 W/m(3), and average degradation rates from 41.7 to 8.9 mg/(Lh). Compared with the C-MFC, the B-MFC increased the maximum power densities from 2.1 to 3.3 W/m(3) and the coulombic efficiencies from 0.7% to 81.5%. Microbial community analyses showed that the addition of indole obviously changes the microbial community of the anode electrode, including the changes of relative abundance and emergence of new species. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of pyridine biodegradation in the microbial fuel cell (MFC), from which electricity was generated. Experiments were initially conducted in a graphite-packed MFC (G-MFC) using a pyridine concentration of 500 mg/L combined with different glucose concentrations. Pyridine of 500 mg/L only used as the G-MFC fuel resulted in a maximal voltage of 116 mV and a maximal power density of 1.7 W/m(3). The maximal voltage reached within 12 h when pyridine was totally depleted. The glucose supplement with concentrations of 500, 250, and 100 mg/L resulted in the maximum voltages of 623, 538, and 349 mV, respectively, correspondingly the maximal volumetric power densities were 48.5, 36.2, and 15.2 W/m(3). Pyridine biodegradation rates reached 95% within 24h using the G-MFC. Interestingly, after 90 d of acclimation, the biodegradation rates of pyridine in the G-MFC using pyridine only as the fuel were higher than those using the glucose-pyridine mixtures. Further experiments were conducted using a graphite fiber brush MFC (B-MFC). Compared to the G-MFC, the B-MFC enhanced the electrical charges by 89, 186, and 586% for the mixtures with ratios of glucose-to-pyridine of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:5, respectively. GC/MS analyses of the anode solution indicated that the metabolism of pyridine in the MFC was initiated by ring reduction and NH3-N production. The results suggest that pyridine may be used as the MFC fuel in practical applications of wastewater treatment.
