Abstract

Systemic inflammation is established as part of late-stage severe lung disease, but molecular, functional, and phenotypic changes in peripheral immune cells in early disease stages remain ill defined. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major respiratory disease characterized by small-airway inflammation, emphysema, and severe breathing difficulties. Using single-cell analyses we demonstrate that blood neutrophils are already increased in early-stage COPD, and changes in molecular and functional neutrophil states correlate with lung function decline. Assessing neutrophils and their bone marrow precursors in a murine cigarette smoke exposure model identified similar molecular changes in blood neutrophils and precursor populations that also occur in the blood and lung. Our study shows that systemic molecular alterations in neutrophils and their precursors are part of early-stage COPD, a finding to be further explored for potential therapeutic targets and biomarkers for early diagnosis and patient stratification.

4. DuCL: Dual-stage contrastive learning framework for Chinese semantic textual matching

Abstract

Chinese semantic textual matching is a fundamental yet challenging task in natural language processing (NLP). How to accurately capture the features in a single piece of text and the interactive features between pieces of text is the core problem of the task. Although pretrained language models (PLMs) and contrastive learning (CL) have been applied to address the problem to some extent, the existing works usually just utilize contrastive learning to finetune the PLMs on one single perspective, such as the sentence or pair level, which neglects to capture the semantic features from the other perspective, leading to inefficient learning and suboptimal performance. To tackle the problem, we propose a novel dual-stage contrastive learning framework (DuCL) for Chinese semantic textual matching. Specifically, DuCL consists of two stages sequentially, i.e., CL on the sentence level and CL on the pair level, each of which is responsible to finetune PLMs from the corresponding perspective. Besides, DuCL introduces a block-enhanced interaction module to integrate token-level and block-level interactive features to generate a semantic matching representation for two pieces of text. Extensive experimental results on two real-world public datasets demonstrate that our method can achieve better performance than the representative and state-of-the-art methods.

5. Spatio-temporal fusion and contrastive learning for urban flow prediction

Abstract

Urban flow prediction is critical for urban planning, management, and safety. However, owing to the inherent instability of urban flows, prediction accuracy requires the fusion of multi-view influencing factors. Current prediction methods are insensitive to periodic changes in urban flows, and rarely consider the implied spatial and temporal correlations between similar functional areas. Thus, we propose a method based on spatiotemporal fusion and contrastive learning. We construct an extraction module of spatial and temporal views based on contrastive learning in the spatial and temporal dimensions. With the temporal view extraction, we can obtain the distribution and change in the global urban flow periodicity. Using the spatial view extraction, we can obtain the implied flow variation relationship between similar regions. Therefore, our model can capture the high-level semantic features of urban flow changes from multiple views. We also design a multi-view fusion and prediction network to combine multi-view representations that impact urban flow. We experimentally evaluated our proposed approach using two real-world datasets and demonstrated state-of-the-art forecasting performance, as well as effectiveness in resource-limited environments.

Abstract

In the past two decades, membrane technology has attracted considerable interest as a viable and promising method for water purification. Emerging organic micropollutants (EOMPs) in wastewater have trace, persistent, highly variable quantities and types, develop hazardous intermediates and are diffusible. These primary issues affect EOMPs polluted wastewater on an industrial scale differently than in a lab, challenging membranes-based EOMP removal. Graphene oxide (GO) promises state-of-the-art membrane synthesis technologies and use in EOMPs removal systems due to its superior physicochemical, mechanical, and electrical qualities and high oxygen content. This critical review highlights the recent advancements in the synthesis of next-generation GO membranes with diverse membrane substrates such as ceramic, polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The EOMPs removal efficiencies of GO membranes in filtration, adsorption (incorporated with metal, nanomaterial in biodegradable polymer and biomimetic membranes), and degradation (in catalytic, photo-Fenton, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic membranes) and corresponding removal mechanisms of different EOMPs are also depicted. GO-assisted water treatment strategies were further assessed by various influencing factors, including applied water flow mode and membrane properties (e.g., permeability, hydrophily, mechanical stability, and fouling). GO additive membranes showed better permeability, hydrophilicity, high water flux, and fouling resistance than pristine membranes. Likewise, degradation combined with filtration is two times more effective than alone, while crossflow mode improves the photocatalytic degradation performance of the system. GO integration in polymer membranes enhances their stability, facilitates photocatalytic processes, and gravity-driven GO membranes enable filtration of pollutants at low pressure, making membrane filtration more inexpensive. Abstract

Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have a strong ability to learn graph representation and have achieved good performance in a range of applications, including social relationship analysis, biological information processing, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision (CV), and so on. In recent years, the application of GCNs in natural language processing and computer vision has attracted substantial interest from researchers, as a result of which many studies based on GCNs have emerged in the fields of natural language processing and computer vision. However, to the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive survey of GCN application in natural language processing and computer vision has not yet been conducted. Accordingly, this survey presents a comprehensive review of the principles of GCNs and its applications in these two fields. First, we summarize the principles of the two types of GCNs, namely spatial methods and spectral methods. Then we divide GCN applications into two categories: natural language processing and computer vision. Subsequently, we present multiple applications from each category in detail. Finally, we outline the limitations of GCNs and discuss possible future research directions.

Abstract

Quasi-elastic scattering measurements have been performed using $^{16}$O and $^{24}$Mg projectiles off $^{90}$Zr at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Experimental data have been analyzed in the framework of coupled channels (CC) calculations using the code CCFULL. The quasi-elastic scattering excitation function and derived barrier distribution for $^{16}$O + $^{90}$Zr reaction are well reproduced by the CC calculations using the vibrational coupling strengths for $^{90}$Zr reported in the literature. Using these vibrational coupling strengths, a Bayesian analysis is carried out for $^{24}$Mg + $^{90}$Zr reaction. The β2 and β4 values for $^{24}$Mg are determined to be +0.43±0.02 and −0.11±0.02, respectively. The β2 parameter determined in the present work is in good agreement with results obtained using inelastic scattering probes. The hexadecapole deformation of $^{24}$Mg has been measured very precisely for the first time. Present results establish that quasi-elastic scattering could provide a useful probe to determine the ground state deformation of atomic nuclei.

Abstract

© 2020 Reinforcement Learning (RL) is limited in practice by its poor explainability, which is responsible for insufficient trustiness from users, unsatisfied interpretation for human intervention, inadequate analysis for future improvement, etc. This paper seeks to partially characterize the interplay between dynamical environments and a previously-proposed Disturbance OBserver net (DOB-net). The DOB-net is trained via RL and offers optimal control for a set of Partially Observable Markovian Decision Processes (POMDPs). The transition function of each POMDP is largely determined by the environments (excessive external disturbances). This paper proposes an Attention-based Abstraction (A2) approach to extract a finite-state automaton, referred to as a Key Moore Machine Network (KMMN), to capture the switching mechanisms exhibited by the DOB-net in dealing with multiple such POMDPs. A2 first quantizes the controlled platform by learning continuous-discrete interfaces. Then it extracts the KMMN by finding the key hidden states and transitions that attract sufficient attention from the DOB-net. Within the resultant KMMN, three patterns of cyclic switchings (between key hidden states) are found, and saturated controls are shown synchronized with unknown disturbances. Interestingly, the found switchings have previously appeared in the control design for often-saturated systems. They are interpreted via an analogy to the discrete-event subsystem of hybrid control.

Abstract

In the era of big data, tremendous amounts of information and data have drastically changed human civilization. The rapid growth in the number of documents generated everyday means that a large amount of knowledge is proposed, improved, and used. For readers, especially newcomers to a given field, excavating suitable knowledge entities from massive documents is time-consuming and labor-consuming, negatively impacting research efficiency. The broad availability of information provides more opportunities for people, but a new challenge has risen as well; that is, how to extract and use knowledge from numerous information resources, especially how to conduct knowledge extraction and text mining (TM) from massive documents in special domains. A knowledge entity is a relatively independent and integral knowledge module in a special discipline or research domain (Chang & Zheng, 2007). In scientific documents, knowledge entities refer to the knowledge mentioned or cited by authors, such as algorithms, models, theories, datasets, and software (Wang & Zhang, 2018), and reflect various resources used by the authors in problem-solving (Zhang, Mayr, Lu, & Zhang, 2020; Hou, Jochim, Gleize, Bonin, & Ganguly, 2019; Brack, D'Souza, Hoppe, Auer, & Ewerth, 2020). Extracting knowledge entities from numerous information resources is useful for multiple downstream tasks in information extraction, TM, natural language processing (NLP), information retrieval, digital library research, and so on. Particularly, in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), information science, and some other related disciplines, discovering methods from a large scale of academic literature, and evaluating the performance and influence of such methods, have become increasingly necessary and meaningful (Hou et al., 2020). Abstract

A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3 detector at LEP using data collected at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 88.3 pb-1 . The Higgs decays into a charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its associated neutrino are considered. The observed candidates are consistent with the expectations from Standard Model background processes. A lower limit of 57.5 GeV on the charged Higgs mass is derived at 95% CL, independent of the decay branching ratio Br(H±→τν)., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

We report on a study of radiative Bhabha and quasi-real Compton scattering at centre-of-mass energies between 50 GeV and 170 GeV, and 20 GeV and 140 GeV, respectively, using the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 232.2 pb-1 . A total of 2856 radiative Bhabha and 4641 Compton scattering events are collected. Total and differential cross sections for both reactions are presented and found to be in good agreement with QED expectations. Our measurement of Compton scattering at the highest energies obtained so far is used to derive exclusion limits on the coupling λ for the on-shell production of an excited electron e★ decaying into a γe pair in the mass range 20 GeV < me★ < 170 GeV., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

Using the data collected with the L3 detector at LEP between 1990 and 1995, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 149 pb(-1), the tau longitudinal polarisation has been measured as a function of the production polar angle using the tau decays tau(-) --> h(-)nu(tau) (h = pi,rho,a(1)) and tau(-)-->l(-)(l)nu(tau) (l = e,mu). From this measurement the quantities A(c) and A(tau), which depend on the couplings of the electron and the tau to the Z, are determined to be A(c) = 0.1678 +/- 0.0127 +/- 0.0030 and A(tau) = 0.1476 +/- 0.0088 +/- 0.0062, consistent with the hypothesis of e-tau universality, Under this assumption a value of A(l) = 0.1540 +/- 0.0074 +/- 0.0044 is obtained, yielding the value of the effective weak mixing angle sin(2)(W) = 0.2306 +/- 0.0011. 26. A systematic method of evaluation of the Chinese natural gas supply security

Abstract

As a relatively clean energy, natural gas will be increasingly in demand to meet short-term low-carbon targets. The gap between the demand and supply of natural gas will be increasingly scrutinized, which highlights the significanceof natural gas supply security. Considering the extensive connections among various aspects related to natural gas supply and the comlex interactions behind these connections, ecological network analysis was applied to simulate the natural gas supply system in China and systemtically measure its overall security level. Network Information Analysis, Structural Analysis, and Utility Analysis were conducted. It is found that the Chinese natural gas supply security increased during 2000-2011. In terms of the influence of different comparments on the whole natural gas supply system, in order from the largest to smallest influence they are: supply sources, consumption sector, refining, and reserve sectors. And the relationships among compartments became stronger in the later stage than that in the earlier stage of the study period. Suggestions on improving China's natural gas supply security were proposed based on the results and further scenario analysis. The network model developed herein is a new perspective for natural gas supply security assessment, which can be used as guidance for policy making.

27. Towards a measurement of the half-life of 60Fe for stellar and early Solar System models

Abstract

Radioisotopes, produced in stars and ejected into the Interstellar Medium, are important for constraining stellar and early Solar System (ESS) models. In particular, the half-life of the radioisotope, 60Fe, can have an impact on calculations for the timing for ESS events, the distance to nearby Supernovae, and the brightness of individual, non-steady-state 60Fe gamma ray sources in the Galaxy. A half-life measurement has been undertaken at the University of Notre Dame and measurements of the 60Fe/56Fe concentration of our samples using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry has begun. This result will be coupled with an activity measurement of the isomeric decay in 60Co, which is the decay product of 60Fe. Preliminary half-life estimates of (2.53±0.24)×106 years seem to confirm the recent measurement by Rugel et al. (2009).

Abstract

Si1 xGex layers sandwiched between Si were grown at low temperature of 450 -C by molecular beam epitaxy. A comprehensive characterization has been performed on these heterostructures by multiple techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), photo- luminescence, Raman scattering, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), ion channeling and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). XRD confirmed the single crystallinity and the (100) orientation of the Si1 xGex layer. The Ge compositions and layer thicknesses were precisely determined by RBS. FTIR measurements revealed the vibration modes of Si–O–Si from the oxidation on surface and Si–H due to the hydrogenization during growth.

31. Two-pattern strings I—A recognition algorithm

Abstract

This paper introduces a new class of strings on {a,b}, called two-pattern strings, that constitute a substantial generalization of Sturmian strings while at the same time sharing many of their nice properties. In particular, we show in this paper that two-pattern strings can be recognized in time proportional to their length. This result is a prelude to showing that the repetitions in these substrings can also be computed in linear time, further that two-pattern strings occur in some sense frequently in the class of all strings on {a,b}.

32. Effects of agricultural market policy on crop production in China

Abstract

This paper investigates the effects of Chinese market policy on crop production in the reform process. After a brief review of the policy changes due to the reform, the theoretical significance of Chinese market policies for crop production is demonstrated diagrammatically. It is shown that under the current market system the production of main crops is significantly influenced by both market and quota prices. While relatively high quota reduces the influence of market prices on production, relative price changes between competing crops will lead to shifting farmers’ cultivation preferences if inputs are constant. Empirical analysis, based on cross-section data for the period 1985–1997 from the province of Zhejiang, confirms these hypotheses. The effects of policy variables, however, prove to be crop-specific. If the potential of crop production in China is to be better used, an even more market-oriented agricultural policy is required.

Abstract

The inclusive production of \eta mesons has been studied using 1.6 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector. The \eta multiplicity per event, the multiplicity for two-jet and three-jet events separately, and the multiplicity in each jet have been measured and compared with the predictions of different Monte Carlo programs. The momentum spectra of \eta in each jet have also been measured. We observe that the measured \eta momentum spectrum in quark-enriched jets agrees well with the Monte Carlo prediction while in gluon-enriched jets it is harder than that predicted by the Monte Carlo models.

Abstract: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is only suitable for early-stage adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). In this study, we observed the therapeutic efficacy of combined transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) and olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) on late-stage X-linked ALD in nine children who were admitted in our hospital between June 2009 and January 2014. Related patient information included onset time 3 months to 1 year, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) score 11.02±0.90, and neurologic function score 2–3. All patients received combined transplantation of NPCs and OECs by injection around the lateral angle of the frontotemporal–occipital lesion under MRI guidance. It was found that the visual function, sleep, and communication obstacles were improved significantly without evidence of disease progression in six (66.7%) of the nine patients within 1 month after transplantation. In two of the six patients, the lesions became significantly smaller than before, although their MRI scores remained unchanged significantly. In addition, cell therapy did not induce any irreversible adverse event during the study period, indicating that combined transplantation of NPCs and OECs was safe and reliable, and could improve the clinical manifestations of ALD in children within a short time. Although this cell therapy was not able to halt the progression of the disease 1–3 months after transplantation, it could still be used as an early treatment and provide patients with more opportunities for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which is the only effective long-term treatment for X-linked ALD at present. The preliminary results from this study suggest that a comprehensive prevention strategy of serial and combined transplantation may improve some functions for ALD patients in the short-term, however, long-term effects need further study. Abstract

An upper limit on the lifetime difference of short- and long-lived $\rm B^0_s$ mesons has been obtained using an inclusive bottom hadron sample from 2 million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP. A lifetime fit has been performed on data samples separately enriched in neutral and charged b hadrons. An experimental upper limit on the decay rate difference of short- and long-lived $\rm B^0_s$ mesons of \begin{displaymath} ~~~~ {\rm (|\Delta\Gamma|/\Gamma)_{B^0_s}} < 0.67 ~~~~~~~\mathrm{(95\% \; C.L.)} \end{displaymath} has been determined. In addition, the lifetimes of $\rm B^+$ and $\rm B^0_d$ mesons have been measured to be $\tau(\rm B^+) = 1.66 \pm 0.06 \, \pm 0.03 \; \mathrm{ps}$ and $\tau(\rm B^0_d) = 1.52 \pm 0.06 \, \pm 0.04 \; \mathrm{ps}$, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

37. Super-resolution ultrasound imaging of ischaemia flow: An in silico study.

Abstract

Super-resolution ultrasound (SRU) is a new ultrasound imaging mode that promises to facilitate the detection of microvascular disease by providing new vascular bio-markers that are directly linked to microvascular pathophysiology, thereby augmenting current knowledge and potentially enabling new treatment. Such a capability can be developed through thorough understanding as articulated by means of mathematical models. In this study, a 2D numerical flow model is adopted for generating flow adaptation in response to ischaemia, in order to determine the ability of SRU to register the resulting flow perturbations. The flow model results demonstrate that variations in flow behaviour in response to locally induced ischaemia can be significant throughout the entire vascular bed. Measured velocities have variations that are dependent on the location of ischaemia, with median values ranging between 2-7 mms -1 . Moreover, the distinction between healthy and ischaemic networks are recorded accurately in the SRU results showing excellent agreement between SRU maps and the model. Up to 7-fold spatial resolution improvement to conventional contrast ultrasound was achieved in microbubble localisation while the detection precision and recall was consistently above 98%. The microbubble tracking precision was of a similar accuracy, whereas the recall was reduced (77%) under varying ischaemic impacted flow. Further, regions with velocities up to 30 mms -1 are in excellent agreement with SRU maps, while at regions that include a proportion of higher velocities, the median velocity values are within 1.28%-3.32% of the ground-truth. 38. Predictive Value of Dynamic Changes in Inflammatory Markers Within 24 Hours After Mechanical Thrombectomy for Outcome in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Abstract

Background: This study analyzes the factors influencing the 90-day prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) and established a multidimensional risk model to predict postoperative 90-day outcomes., Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical data was conducted for AIS patients who underwent MT at our hospital. A total of 111 patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Based on the modified Rankin Scale scores from follow-up records at 3 months postsurgery, the patients were divided into a good prognosis group (88 cases, 79.28%) and a poor prognosis group (23 cases, 20.72%). Receiver operating characteristic curves were plotted using MedCalc software, and area under the curve (AUC) values were calculated to establish a risk prediction model, presented in the form of a nomogram., Results: Logistic regression analysis showed that C-reactive protein (T3) (P < 0.001), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score at admission (P = 0.001), and a history of atrial fibrillation (P = 0.004) were independent predictors of poor prognosis, while albumin (T2) (P = 0.008) was a protective factor for the 90-day outcome. The AUC values for these factors were 0.812, 0.760, 0.655, and 0.757, respectively. The AUC value of Normotu was 0.945. Calibration slope = 0.856, calibration-in-the-large ≈ 0, and observed/expected ratio ≈ 1., Conclusions: Post-MT C-reactive protein levels, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score at admission, and a history of atrial fibrillation are significantly associated with poor prognosis in these patients. Moreover, higher levels of endogenous albumin are a protective factor for the 3-month prognosis of AIS patients after MT., (Copyright © 2025 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc. Background: There is an ongoing debate about whether clearance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection occurs and at what magnitude. Recent studies quantifying 'uncertainty zones' of interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) provide a more stringent estimate of reversion, potentially indicating clearance., Research Question: When accounting for 'uncertainty zones' through stringent cutoffs, what are the trajectories of interferon-gamma release assays in cases of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection?, Study Design and Methods: We followed five cohorts from South Africa, China, Tanzania, and the United States tested with an IGRA test three or more times for stringent conversion and reversion. Stringent reversion at year 2 after stringent conversion at year 1 varied between cohorts, occurring in 48% (43/90) for WANTAI, 37% (22/59) for QuantiFERON, and 17% (2/12) for T-SPOT.TB, respectively. In the U.S. cohorts, stringent reversion at year 1 after stringent conversion at 6 months was 58% (15/26) for QuantiFERON and 18% (12/60) for T-SPOT.TB. Stringent reversion at 1 year after baseline positivity occurred in 12% (47/404) for WANTAI, 21% (10/48) for QuantiFERON and 44% for T-SPOT.TB (45/102). In one cohort from (N=399; age range, 59 years [IQR, 48-67]), IGRA reversion was more common in younger participants (Adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR], 0.95; 95% CI, 0.93-0.97) and those without recent close tuberculosis exposure (aOR, 0.35; 95%CI, 0.11-1.03 in South Africa; 0.10; 95%CI, 0.01-0.61 in China)., Interpretation: These results suggest high annual rates of IGRA reversion, even with the use of 'uncertainty zones'; reversion rates decreased with time from exposure and at older ages., (Copyright © 2025. 40. Chickpea-resistant starch exhibits bioactive function for alleviating atopic dermatitis via regulating butyrate production.

Abstract

Resistant starch (RS) is one of the bioactive polysaccharides to produce Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the colon and contributes to allergic diseases including atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the bioactive mechanism of RS relieving AD needs to be elucidated. In this study, RS was prepared using chickpeas. Its microstructure and crystal structure were thoroughly characterized. Chickpea RS significantly improved the clinical symptoms and restored Th1/Th2 immune balance in mice with AD induced by calcipotriol. These benefits were eliminated by antibiotic cocktail treatment, suggesting that gut microbiota mediated the alleviation effects of chickpea RS on AD. Based on metagenomic sequencing and untargeted metabolomic analysis, chickpea RS treatment significantly increased the proportions of Butyricimonas virosa, Bifidobacterium pseudolongum, and Faecalibaculum rodentium, and a total of 206 differential metabolites were altered, especially the increase in propionate and butyrate production. Furthermore, we found that acylated butyrate, but not propionate, improved the pathological characteristics by activating GPR109A, which inhibit the phosphorylation levels of IκB-α, p50, p65, JNK, and p-JNK. Abstract

Background: The increase of macrophage-like vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) within atherosclerotic plaques significantly contributes to plaque vulnerability. The STAT3 signaling is crucial in maintaining the contractile phenotype of VSMCs. Recent studies have identified two isoforms of STAT3, STAT3α and STAT3β, generated through alternative splicing. However, the roles of these isoforms in VSMC phenotypic transformation and plaque vulnerability are not yet clear., Methods: In this study, we examined the differential expression of STAT3α and STAT3β in vulnerable and stable plaque tissues, and their correlation with the content of macrophage-like VSMCs. Utilizing in vivo and in vitro experiments, we elucidated the regulatory mechanisms of STAT3 alternative splicing and the molecular mechanisms by which STAT3β induces the transformation of VSMCs into the macrophage-like phenotype., Results: We observed a significant upregulation of STAT3β within macrophage-like VSMCs in vulnerable plaque tissues. Upregulation of STAT3β, not merely the downregulation of STAT3α, drives the transformation of VSMCs into the macrophage-like phenotype. The splicing factor PCBP1 binds to exon 23 of the STAT3 gene, suppressing the expression of STAT3β. Objective: College students are considered as a high-risk age group for contracting HPV. HPV vaccines are proved to play a major role in preventing Cervical cancer and related cancers among both men and women. This study aimed to explore influencing factors in intention making-decision of Human papillomavirus vaccine in Chinese college students., Methods: A descriptive qualitative research based on naturalistic inquiry in Daqing City, Heilong Jiang Province from October to November 2022 was conducted. Semi-structured interviews with Chinese college students. We used thematic framework analysis with NVivo 12.0 software to transcribe and analyze the interview recordings., Results: We conducted 20 in-depth interviews. Four main themes with 14 subthemes were identified: (a) potential risks of HPV infection; (b) susceptibility factors of HPV infection; (c) difficulties in HPV vaccination; (d) decision support for HPV vaccination., Conclusion: Most college students expressed hesitancy toward receiving the HPV vaccine. Abstract

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD), a severe neuropsychiatric condition, often appears during adolescence. Traditional diagnostic methods, which primarily rely on clinical interviews and single-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, may have limitations in accuracy. This study aimed to improve adolescent BD diagnosis by integrating behavioral assessments with multimodal MRI. We hypothesized that this combination would enhance diagnostic accuracy for at-risk adolescents., Methods: A retrospective cohort of 309 participants, including patients with BD, offspring of patients with BD (with and without subthreshold symptoms), non-BD offspring with subthreshold symptoms, and healthy control participants, was analyzed. Behavioral attributes were integrated with MRI features from T1-weighted, resting-state functional MRI, and diffusion tensor imaging. Three diagnostic models were developed using GLMNET multinomial regression: a clinical diagnosis model based on behavioral attributes, an MRI-based model, and a comprehensive model integrating both datasets., Results: The comprehensive model achieved a prediction accuracy of 0.83 (95% CI, 0.72-0.92), significantly higher than the clinical (0.75) and MRI-based (0.65) models. Validation with an external cohort showed high accuracy (0.89, area under the curve = 0.95). Structural equation modeling revealed that clinical diagnosis (β = 0.487, p < .0001), parental BD history (β = -0.380, p < .0001), and global function (β = 0.578, p < .0001) significantly affected brain health, while psychiatric symptoms showed only a marginal influence (β = -0.112, p = .056)., Conclusions: This study highlights the value of integrating multimodal MRI with behavioral assessments for early diagnosis in at-risk adolescents. Combining neuroimaging enables more accurate patient subgroup distinctions, facilitating timely interventions and improving health outcomes. Abstract

Background: Recent years have witnessed an explosive surge in dental research related to artificial intelligence (AI). These applications have optimised dental workflows, demonstrating significant clinical importance. Understanding the current landscape and trends of this topic is crucial for both clinicians and researchers to utilise and advance this technology. However, a comprehensive scientometric study regarding this field had yet to be performed., Methods: A literature search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection database to identify eligible "research articles" and "reviews." Literature screening and exclusion were performed by 2 investigators. Thereafter, VOSviewer was utilised in co-occurrence analysis and CiteSpace in co-citation analysis. R package Bibliometrix was employed to automatically calculate scientific impacts, determining the core authors and journals. Altmetric data were described narratively and supplemented with Spearman correlation analysis., Results: A total of 1558 research publications were included. During the past 5 years, AI-related dental publications drastically increased in number, from 36 to 581. Diagnostics and Scientific Reports published the most articles, whereas Journal of Dental Research received the highest number of citations per article. China, the US, and South Korea emerged as the most prolific countries, whilst Germany received the highest number of citations per article (23.29). Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin was the institution with the highest number of publications and citations per article (29.16). Altmetric Attention Score was correlated with News Mentions (P < .001), and significant associations were observed amongst Dimension Citations, Mendeley Readers, and Web of Science Citations (P < .001)., Conclusions: The publication numbers regarding AI-related dental research have been rising rapidly and may continue their upwards trend. China, the US, South Korea, and Germany had promoted the progress of AI-related dental research. Disease diagnosis, orthodontic applications, and morphology segmentation were current hotspots. Abstract

Purpose: Accurate and automated early survival prediction is critical for patients with glioblastoma (GBM) as their poor prognosis requires timely treatment decision-making. To address this need, we developed a deep learning (DL)-based end-to-end workflow for GBM overall survival (OS) prediction using pre-resection basic structural multiparametric magnetic resonance images (Bas-mpMRI) with a multi-institutional public dataset and evaluated it with an independent dataset of patients on a prospective institutional clinical trial., Materials and Methods: The proposed end-to-end workflow includes a skull-stripping model, a GBM sub-region segmentation model and an ensemble learning-based OS prediction model. The segmentation model utilizes skull-stripped Bas-mpMRIs to segment three GBM sub-regions. The segmented GBM is fed into the contrastive learning-based OS prediction model to classify the patients into different survival groups. Our datasets include both a multi-institutional public dataset from Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge 2020 with 235 patients, and an institutional dataset from a 5-fraction SRS clinical trial with 19 GBM patients. Each data entry consists of pre-operative Bas-mpMRIs, survival days and patient ages. Basic clinical characteristics are also available for SRS clinical trial data. The multi-institutional public dataset was used for workflow establishing (90% of data) and initial validation (10% of data). The validated workflow was then evaluated on the institutional clinical trial data., Results: Our proposed OS prediction workflow achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.86 on the public dataset and 0.72 on the institutional clinical trial dataset to classify patients into 2 OS classes as long-survivors (>12 months) and short-survivors (<12 months), despite the large variation in Bas-mpMRI protocols. In addition, as part of the intermediate results, the proposed workflow can also provide detailed GBM sub-regions auto-segmentation with a whole tumor Dice score of 0.91., Conclusion: Our study demonstrates the feasibility of employing this DL-based end-to-end workflow to predict the OS of patients with GBM using only the pre-resection Bas-mpMRIs. Abstract

Background: Neck pain is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. However, the nature of cervical spine surgery is multi-factorial and often based upon clinical opinions, leaving clinical indications still to be clearly defined., Objective: To predict which clinical variables most influenced trends toward surgical or conservative management for individuals with neck pain., Design: Retrospective analysis on prospectively collected data., Methods: Two-hundred seventy individuals participated in the study. A retrospective chart review was performed to identify qualifying participants. Variables captured during data collection included the following: patient demographic information, physical examination (e.g., neurologic examination), physical performance measures, patient-reported outcome measures (Numeric Pain Rating Scale and Neck Disability Index), and chronicity of symptoms. Group allocation was determined by referring physician's medical diagnosis. A forward step-wise multiple logistic regression analysis was used to develop a final predictor model with p < 0.05 considered significant., Results: The model showed older age (beta = 0.022; Exp(beta) = 1.022; p = 0.037), longer chronicity of symptoms (beta = 0.000; Exp(beta) = 1.000; p = 0.012), and greater neck disability (beta = 0.027; Exp(beta) = 1.028; p < 0.001) were significant predictors of the operative group. 47. Development and Characterization of a Novel Rat Model for Emulating COPD-Associated Cor Pulmonale.

Abstract

Cor pulmonale, a condition marked by right ventricular dysfunction, is frequently associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and significantly worsens COPD prognosis. Despite the clinical relevance of cor pulmonale, development of effective treatments is hindered by the lack of animal models that accurately replicate the complex interplay between cor pulmonale and COPD. This study introduces a novel rat model combining cigarette smoke exposure with left pulmonary artery ligation to better mimic the pathophysiological features of COPD-related cor pulmonale. Pulmonary function tests revealed impaired lung function, and histologic assessments indicated emphysematous changes and inflammatory infiltration, consistent with COPD pathology. Furthermore, the model exhibited hallmarks of cor pulmonale, including right ventricular hypertrophy, fibrosis, and capillary rarefaction, alongside hemodynamic alterations indicative of pulmonary hypertension. 48. Machine learning-integrated surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy analysis of multicomponent dye mixtures.

Abstract

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is broadly used in the detection and analysis of materials with its fingerprint-like specificity and high sensitivity. However, resembling signals of analytes highly affect the identification and assignment of spectra, which has become a long-term issue to be solved. In this study, various models of machine learning are utilized and compared to support data analysis of complex SERS spectra. Silver-coated gold core-shell nanocubes (Au@AgNCs) are optimized as SERS substrates for the detection of four common dyes - methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), rhodamine B (RhB) and malachite green (MG). Independent principal component analysis (ICA) was utilized to isolate the signals from the SERS spectra of the dye mixtures, and the isolated signals were further classified by commonly used classification models including K Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forests (RF), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). The results show that the CNN model achieved an accuracy of 98% in the classification of single dyes and an accuracy of 97% in the classification of dye mixtures, which is significantly better than other models. Abstract

Dynamic therapies such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) have potential in cancer treatment. Microalgae have attracted increasing attention because of their high active mobility, flexibility in terms of functionality, and good biocompatibility. In this study, surface-engineered microalgae Chlorella vulgaris (Chl) modified with metal‒organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (denoted Chl-MOF) are successfully developed for synergistic photo-sonodynamic therapy and immunotherapy. The resulting Chl-MOF can be used as an oxygenator for O 2 generation through Chl-mediated photosynthesis, alleviating tumor hypoxia. Furthermore, Chl-MOF produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) during laser and ultrasound (US) irradiation, further augmenting the photo-sonodynamic effects and enhancing tumor cell apoptosis. Owing to the high mobility of Chl, cellular uptake efficiency and accumulation in deep tumor sites are 5.2-fold and 3.3-fold higher, respectively, for Chl-MOF than for the MOF. Owing to the immunomodulatory effects of Chl, Chl-MOF can increase natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxic activity, increase dendritic cell (DC) antigen-presenting ability, reverse the establishment of an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), and induce a relatively strong antitumor immune response. Chl-MOF can effectively reduce breast cancer size by 88.8 % in vitro and in vivo via synergistic photo-sonodynamic therapy and immunotherapy. These intriguing properties of the combination of Chl and MOF provide promising platform for cancer theranostic applications. 50. Endovascular Therapy is Effective in Patients with Post-Thrombotic Syndrome Based on Anatomical Classification: A Multi-Center Experience.

Abstract

Background: In this study, we aimed to retrospectively review patients with post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) and investigate its long-term outcomes, and a novel classification were presented across multiple institutions., Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with PTS who underwent endovascular therapy at 2 institutions between January 2018 and September 2023. Baseline patient demographics, lesion characteristics, and in-hospital and follow-up outcomes were collected and analyzed retrospectively., Results: 83 patients (86 limbs) patients suffered PTS received endovascular related surgery at the 2 institutions. The lesions were summarized into 2 categories: sufficient or insufficient inflow according to digital subtraction angiography (DSA). 77 limbs (89.53%) underwent successful endovascular treatment including 46 limbs receiving percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and stent implantation, and 31 limbs undergoing PTA without stent deployment was mainly contributed to insufficient inflow. The mean follow-up time was 23.44 ± 16.91 months (range, 6-60 months) in stent implantation cohort. In-stent restenosis and an occlusive endograft edge were observed in 2 cases, respectively. No other stent-related complications, such as fractures or migration, were noted in any patient during the follow-up period., Conclusions: Endovascular technique was safe and effective for the treatment of PTS and showed promising long-term prognosis.
