Ophiolites are known sources of naturally occurring asbestos (NOA). In Calabria (Southern Italy) NOA are mainly concentrated in the ophiolitic sequences cropping in the Mount Reventino area, in the southern part of the Sila massif, and along the Coastal Chain. The most common type of asbestos identified in the rocks of these areas belongs to the tremolite-actinolite series. Another identified asbestiform mineral is fibrous antigorite belonging to the serpentine mineral group with a minor amount of chrysotile. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the diffusion of natural asbestiform fibers from NOA using sentinel animals. Fifteen lung samples of sheep, goats and wild boars from Mount Reventino area and two from an area free from NOA were collected. The lung samples were subjected to anatomopathological examination and lung fiber burden analysis by electron microscopy. Abundant tremolite and few antigorite fibers were detected in the lung samples coming from the NOA area. No corpuscle of asbestos was observed. No fiber was found in the two lung samples of sheet from the area free from NOA. These concentrations of fibers per gram of dry weight of lung tissue (f/gdw) ranged from 10 4 to 10 6  f/gdw. The asbestos fibers detected in the lungs of the examined animals reflect the geological features of the areas where they grazed and lived. The anatomopathological analysis showed that 60% of the examined animals had macroscopic lesions affecting their lungs. Here we propose an innovative photocatalytic hybrid system for the reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solutions. The hybrid system was composed of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) immobilized in the micro-voids of asymmetric alumina hollow fibers and of the green algae Chlorella vulgaris coated on the outer sponge-like layer of the fiber. The photoreduction of Cr(VI) was systematically studied in different systems: single systems with TiO 2 or algae; the synergistic system of algae combined with TiO 2 ; and the proposed hybrid system composed of TiO 2 and algae supported in ceramic hollow fibers. Morphological and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses showed that TiO 2 and the algae were properly supported in the substrate (alumina hollow fibers). For an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 10 mg L -1 and dosages of 1 g L -1 of TiO 2 and algae, the hybrid system resulted in total Cr(VI) reduction after 16 h of process. Additionally, the efficiency of the hybrid system for Cr(VI) reduction was reduced in only 9% after 5 cycles of reuse and in 42% after 10 cycles of reuse. Background: The mechanisms by which mineral fibers induce adverse effects in vivo are still not well understood. The mechanisms of fiber dissolution in the lungs and subsequent release of metals in the extracellular/intracellular environment must be taken into account., Aim: For the first time, the kinetics of release of metals during the acellular in vitro dissolution of chrysotile, crocidolite and fibrous erionite were determined., Methods: In vitro acellular dissolution of chrysotile, crocidolite, and fibrous erionite-Na was conducted using a solution mimicking the phagolysosome environment active during the phagocytosis process (pH=4.5, at 37 °C). The kinetics of release of a representative selection of metals were determined over a period of three months., Results: Despite the fact that the difference in Fe content between chrysotile and crocidolite is one order of magnitude, the much faster dissolution rate of chrysotile compared to crocidolite prompts greater release of available active surface Fe in the first weeks of the dissolution experiment and comparable amounts after 90 d. Such active iron may promote the formation of toxic hydroxyl radicals. The fast release of metals like Cr, Ni and Mn from chrysotile is also a source of concern whereas the release of V in solution is negligible., Conclusion: Because chrysotile undergoes fast dissolution with respect to crocidolite and fibrous erionite, it behaves like a carrier that releases its metals' cargo in the lung environment, mimicking the phenomenon that explains the toxicity of nanoparticles. Hence, the toxicity paradigm of a non biodurable fiber like chrysotile should also take into account the release of toxic metals in the intracellular/extracellular medium during the rapid dissolution process., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. The typical insulation rock, slag and glass wool fibers are high volume materials. Current exposure levels in industry (generally ≤ 1 fiber/cm 3 with a median diameter ∼1 μm and length ≥10 μm) are not considered carcinogenic or causing other types of severe lung effects. However, epidemiological studies are not informative on effects in humans at fiber levels >1 fiber/cm 3 . Effects may be inferred from valid rat studies, conducted with rat respirable fibers (diameter ≤ 1.5 μm). Therefore, we estimate delivery and deposition in human and rat airways of the industrial fibers. The deposition fractions in humans head regions by nasal (∼0.20) and by mouth breathing (≤0.08) are lower than in rats (0.50). The delivered dose into the lungs per unit lung surface area during a 1-day exposure at a similar air concentration is estimated to be about two times higher in humans than in rats. The deposition fractions in human lungs by nasal (∼0.20) and by mouth breathing (∼0.40) are higher than in rats (∼0.04). The human lung deposition may be up to three times by nasal breathing and up to six times higher by oral breathing than in rats, qualifying assessment factor setting for deposition., (Copyright © 2018 The Authors. In this work, hyperspectral imaging in the short wave infrared range (SWIR: 1000-2500nm) coupled with chemometric techniques was evaluated as an analytical tool to detect and classify different asbestos minerals, such as amosite ((Fe 2+ ) 2 (Fe 2+ ,Mg) 5 Si 8 O 22 (OH) 2 )), crocidolite (Na 2 (Mg,Fe) 6 Si 8 O 22 (OH) 2 ) and chrysotile (Mg 3 (Si 2 O 5 )(OH) 4 ), contained in cement matrices. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used for data exploration and Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogies (SIMCA) for sample classification. The classification model was built using spectral characteristics of reference asbestos samples and then applied to the asbestos containing materials. Results showed that identification and classification of amosite, crocidolite and chrysotile was obtained based on their different spectral signatures, mainly related to absorptions detected in the hydroxyl combination bands, such as Mg-OH (2300nm) and Fe-OH (from 2280 to 2343nm). The developed SIMCA model showed very good specificity and sensitivity values (from 0.89 to 1.00). The correctness of classification results was confirmed by stereomicroscopic investigations, based on different color, morphological and morphometrical characteristics of asbestos minerals, and by micro X-ray fluorescence maps, through iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg) distribution assessment on asbestos fibers. Erionite belonging to the zeolite family is a human health-hazard, since it was demonstrated to be carcinogenic. Conversely, offretite family zeolites were suspected carcinogenic. Mineralogical, morphological, chemical, and surface characterizations were performed on two erionites (GF1, MD8) and one offretite (BV12) fibrous samples and, for comparison, one scolecite (SC1) sample. The specific surface area analysis indicated a larger availability of surface sites for the adsorption onto GF1, while SC1 shows the lowest one and the presence of large pores in the poorly fibrous zeolite aggregates. Selected spin probes revealed a high adsorption capacity of GF1 compared to the other zeolites, but the polar/charged interacting sites were well distributed, intercalated by less polar sites (Si-O-Si). MD8 surface is less homogeneous and the polar/charged sites are more interacting and closer to each other compared to GF1. The interacting ability of BV12 surface is much lower than that found for GF1 and MD8 and the probes are trapped in small pores into the fibrous aggregates. In comparison with the other zeolites, the non-carcinogenic SC1 shows a poor interacting ability and a lower surface polarity. The behavior of alkaline earth silicate (AES) wool and of other biosoluble wools in saline solution simulating physiological fluids was compared with that of a traditional wool belonging to synthetic vitreous fibers. Morphological and size changes of fibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elements extracted from fibers were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. SEM analysis showed a larger reduction of length-weighted geometric mean fiber diameter at 4.5 pH than at 7.4 pH. At the 7.4 pH, AES wool showed a higher dissolution rate and a dissolution time less than a few days. Their dissolution was highly non-congruent with rapid leaching of calcium. Unlike rock wool, glass wool dissolved more rapidly at physiological pH than at acid pH. Dissolution of AES and biosoluble rock wool is accompanied by a noticeable change in morphology while by no change for glass wool. Biosoluble rock wool developed a leached surface with porous honeycomb structure. SEM analysis showed the dissolution for glass wool is mainly due to breakage transverse of fiber at pH 7.4. The present research investigates, develops and evaluates the transformation of chrysotile asbestos into a non-hazardous material, such as forsterite, using an economically viable and safe method. The aim of this study is to convert fibrous chrysotile asbestos into an anhydrous magnesium silicate with a non-hazardous lamellar morphology using supercritical steam. The treatment method is characterized as hydrothermal in a temperature and pressure range of 300-700 degrees C and 1.75-5.80 MPa, respectively. Small amounts of asbestos (2.5 g) were treated in each experiment. Deionised water was used as the treatment solution. The treatment duration varied from approximately 1-5 h. Additional experiments took place using solutions of distilled water and small amounts of acetic acid, with the aim of attaining optimal treatment conditions. Crystal phases of the samples were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The main phases present in the treated samples were forsterite, enstatite, and chrysotile asbestos. Lizardite and periclase were also found. The morphology of the treated chrysotile asbestos fibers was identified by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The fibrous form of chrysotile asbestos was converted into non-fibrous form of forsterite. In fact, none of the fibrous-needle-like morphology, with length equal to or greater than 5 microm and diameter less than 3 microm, which was responsible for the toxicity of the original material, was visible in the solid phase. The dissolution of magnesium from chrysotile asbestos was measured using volumetric determination by titration with EDTA. Leaching of magnesium into the liquid phase was observed. Clearly, the highest concentrations of dissolved magnesium are observed after hydrothermal treatment of chrysotile asbestos using acetic acid 1% (8.4-14.6%). Lowest concentrations of dissolved magnesium are obtained after hydrothermal treatment of chrysotile asbestos without using additives. Observing the results of the hydrothermal treatment using additives, the mineralogical conversion does not depend on the presence of a small quantity of weak organic acid (<1%). Air-stripping is one of the most effective technologies for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from surfactant solutions, although the presence of surfactant poses some unique challenges. This study evaluated the effect of a mixed surfactant system on the apparent Henry's law constant of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and the efficiency of PCE removal from surfactant solutions using a lab-scale hollow fiber membrane contactor. Results show that the presence of surfactant significantly reduced the apparent Henry's law constant of PCE, and the reduction was proportional to the total surfactant concentration. PCE removal efficiency by membrane air-stripping (MAS) decreased as the surfactant system transitioned from solubilization to supersolubilization. Besides significantly reducing the apparent volatility of VOCs, the presence of surfactant brings additional mass transfer resistance in air-stripping, which makes it difficult to achieve high levels of contaminant removal, even at very high air/liquid (A/L) ratios. In contrast, multipass/multistage MAS operated at low A/L ratios could achieve near 100% contaminant removal because of less mass transfer limitation during each stripping pass/stage. Experimental results, together with model calculations demonstrate multipass (and multistage) air-stripping as a cost-effective alternative for removing VOCs from surfactant micellar solutions compared to the options of using large air strippers or operating at high A/L ratios.

The printed circuit boards (PCBs) contain nearly 70% nonmetal materials, which usually are abandoned as an industrial solid-waste byproduct during the recycling of waste PCBs. However those materials have abundant high-value glass fibers. In this study, a novel fluidized bed process technology for recycling glass fibers from nonmetal materials of waste PCBs is studied. The recycled glass fibers (RGF) are analyzed by determination of their purity, morphology and surface chemical composition. This process technology is shown to be effective and robust in treating with nonmetal materials of waste PCBs. The thermoset resins in the nonmetal materials are decomposed in the temperature range from 400 degrees C to 600 degrees C. And the glass fibers are collected at high purity and recovery rate by the cyclone separators without violating the environmental regulation. This novel fluidized bed technology for recycling high-value glass fibers from nonmetal materials of waste PCBs represents a promising way for recycling resources and resolving the environmental pollutions during recycling of waste PCBs.

In this work, a weakly acidic ion exchange fiber (PTFE-g-AA) has been prepared by 60Co irradiation grafting with acrylic acid (AA) onto the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fiber. The grafted fiber was characterized by FTIR, SEM and TGA technique. The exchange capacity of the PTFE-g-AA fiber is 3.87 mmol/g. The adsorbent material was employed for Er(III) uptaking by batch and column experiments. Kinetics studies showed that the adsorption process obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption isotherms followed both the Freundlich model and Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the PTFE-g-AA fiber for Er(III) was evaluated to be 142.0mg/g for the Langmuir model. It was found that 0.75 M HCl-0.25 M NaCl solution provided effectiveness of the desorption of Er(III) from the PTFE-g-AA fiber. Various thermodynamic parameters such as standard enthalpy (DeltaH(0)), standard entropy (DeltaS(0)) and standard free energy (DeltaG(0)) were evaluated. The adsorption of Er(III) on the PTFE-g-AA fiber was found to be endothermic in nature. The Thomas model was successfully applied to experimental data to predict the breakthrough curves and to determine the characteristics parameters of the column useful for process design.

Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit.

The mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation changes dramatically from west to east as the formation nears the basal contact of the Duluth Complex. This reflects a contact metamorphism that took place with the emplacement of the igneous Duluth Complex at temperatures as high as 1200 degrees C. However, the mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation also varies vertically through the stratigraphy of the unit. This variability in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions makes it difficult to predict exact horizons where specific minerals will occur. The iron-formation has been subdivided into four broad stratigraphic units (lower cherty, lower slaty, upper cherty, and upper slaty) and into four lateral mineralogical zones (1-4). Zone 1, the westernmost zone, is characterized by quartz, magnetite, hematite, carbonates, talc, chamosite, greenalite, minnesotaite, and stilpnomelane. The silicate mineralogy in Zone 2 of the Biwabik Iron Formation changes very little. However, the minerals begin to change dramatically in Zone 3. Most significantly, Zone 3 is characterized by the appearance of grunerite in both a tabular form and a fibrous form. In Zone 4, the original silicate minerals have completely reacted, and a new suite of minerals occupies the iron-formation. These include grunerite, hornblende, hedenbergite, ferrohypersthene (ferrosilite), and fayalite.

The biological treatment of a tri-component mixed waste gas system in BRC1 and BRC2 biofilters packed with rock wool-compost media was studied. The model gases were NH(3), H(2)S and toluene. The gases were fed initially at about 50-55 ppm each. H(2)S was found to have the shortest start-up while toluene had the longest. Under two different NH(3):H(2)S:toluene concentration ratios of 250:120:55 and 120:220:55 (in ppm) for BRC1 and BRC2, the removal efficiencies of NH(3), H(2)S and toluene were found to be affected by their respective loading rate. On the other hand, toluene removal was observed to be inhibited at H(2)S concentration of 220 ppm as well. Almost complete removal of NH(3) and H(2)S was achieved when loading rate was applied up to 16.14 g-NH(3)/(m(3) bed h) and 36.09 g-H(2)S/(m(3) bed h), respectively. The maximum elimination capacity for NH(3) was determined to be 23.67 g-NH(3)/(m(3) bed h) at 78.6% removal efficiency and for H(2)S, 38.50 g-H(2)S/(m(3) bed h) at 68.1% removal efficiency. The maximum toluene elimination capacity was 30.75 g-toluene/(m(3) bed h) at 87.9% removal efficiency when the concentration of NH(3):H(2)S:toluene was 250:120:55 in BRC1, and was 16.60 g-toluene/(m(3) bed h) at 45.5% removal efficiency when the concentration of NH(3):H(2)S:toluene was 120:220:55 in BRC2. The pressure drops along both columns were low and the ratio of bed compactions over biofilter height was observed to be less than 0.02.

A novel polar solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coated with poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) was prepared by immersion precipitation technique. The microstructure of the coating exhibits a sponge-like sublayer supporting a dense cracking shaped top layer (about 1 microm in thickness). This coating shows long lifetime (up to 100 times) and is stable at desorption temperature up to 290 degrees C due to the rigid aromatic rings in chemical structure. We evaluated the extraction-desorption properties of the PPESK fiber for nitroaromatic explosives in aqueous samples. The parameters affecting the extraction were optimized, including extraction temperature and time, salt addition, desorption temperature and time. Limits of detection (LOD), precisions and linear dynamic range for the analysis of explosives by SPME-GC/TSD or ECD were evaluated. Limits of detection of the new fiber was three orders of magnitude lower than those with carbowax/divinylbenzene (CW/DVB), and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of single fiber and fiber-to-fiber were less than 9.3 and 10.4%, respectively. The results demonstrated that the PPESK coating exhibited high extraction efficiency for nitroaromatic compounds due to the pi-pi interaction, dipole-dipole interactions and interactions by polar functional groups. The method was applied to the analysis of nitroaromatic explosives in real aqueous samples including seawater and groundwater samples, with relative recoveries better than 90.7%.

A simple solid-phase microextraction (SPME) device, coupled with gas chromatography-electron capture detection (GC-ECD) was developed to detect trace levels of chloro- and nitrobenzene compounds in environmental water samples. Polyaniline (PANI) was chosen as the extraction material for the SPME device, and was electrochemically deposited on a stainless steel wire to achieve high mechanical stability. Due to the peculiar pi-pi conjugated structure, PANI coating shows a stable performance in high temperature (to 350 degrees C) and solvents (organic and inorganic). The porous structure of PANI film characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed high extraction efficiency. The possible extraction mechanism was explained by the study carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Eight chloro- and nitrobenzene compounds were selected to evaluate the SPME-GC procedures. The key parameters such as extraction and desorption temperature and time, and the ionic strength were investigated and optimized. The method was applied to the detection of environmental water samples collected from Taihu Lake, representing nowadays contamination level under industrial impact. The whole PANI-SPME-GC method offers high accuracy and precision, high sensitivity and low detection limits. Thus, the method developed could be used as a new way to monitor the trace levels of chloro- and nitrobenzene compounds in real water bodies.

The first study on the high efficiency of nano-structured lead dioxide as a new fiber for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) purposes has been reported. The size of the PbO2 particles was in the range of 34-136 nm. Lead dioxide-based fibers were prepared via electrochemical deposition on a platinum wire. The extraction properties of the fiber to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) were examined using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) mode coupled to gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The results obtained proved the suitability of proposed fibers for the sampling of organic compounds from water. The extraction procedure was optimized by selecting the appropriate extraction parameters, including preparation conditions of coating, salt concentration, time and temperature of adsorption and desorption and stirring rate. The calibration graphs were linear in a concentration range of 0.1-100 microg l(-1) (R2 > 0.994) with detection limits below 0.012 microg l(-1) level. Single fiber repeatability and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility were less than 10.0 and 12.5%, respectively. The PbO2 coating was proved to be very stable at relatively high temperatures (up to 300 degrees C) with a high extraction capacity and long lifespan (more than 50 times). Higher chemical resistance and lower cost are among the advantages of PbO2 fibers over commercially available SPME fibers. Good recoveries (81-108%) were obtained when environmental samples were analyzed.

As inhaled fibers may lead to a variety of lung diseases, detailed information on their deposition in the human respiratory tract is an indispensable requirement in medical science. In the work presented here, a Visual Basic((R)) computer program, termed FIBROS, is described which enables the simulation of fibrous particle deposition in both the extrathoracic region and different parts of the lung itself, including the results of published numerical studies on inertial/interceptional as well as diffusional and gravitational deposition. The input window of FIBROS includes the selection of specific breathing conditions by variation of the tidal volume and breathing cycle. Furthermore, the user is able to determine fiber properties such as diameter, aspect ratio, specific weight, and fiber orientation with respect to the air stream in the upper and lower airways of the lungs. Besides the offer of various deposition formulae for each region of the respiratory tract, thereby also allowing a distinction between mouth and nose breathing, the user may select between different morphometric datasets of the lung and respective airway scaling procedures. Analysis routines of FIBROS include the estimation of regional deposition fractions, thereby distinguishing between extrathoracic, bronchial, and acinar compartments, and a calculation of generation-by-generation deposition probabilities within tubular and alveolar structures. Preliminary results presented here should demonstrate the effects on fiber deposition due to variations of the breathing behaviour and the particle properties.

Refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) is a high-temperature insulating fiber used principally in industrial applications. Epidemiological studies on occupationally exposed cohorts have not indicated that exposure leads to fibrosis, increased lung cancer, or mesothelioma. However, inhalation bioassays with rats and hamsters have shown that these animals can develop each of these endpoints when exposed to high levels of RCF-particle mixtures. This work summarizes relevant quantitative risk analyses based upon analysis of the rat bioassay studies, which lead to predicted unit risks that range nearly three orders of magnitude. Additionally, we identify key assumptions that affect the risk estimates and provide additional estimates using the benchmark dose methodology favored by the U.S. EPA in cases where mechanistic models are inadequate or not available. We show that a key determinant of risk is how lung burdens are normalized (e.g., in terms of the number of fibers per square centimeter of lung surface or the number of fibers per milligram dry lung) for species conversion. Plausible values of unit potency/risk range from 1.4x10(-4) to 7.2x10(-4), neglecting any allowance for the effects of particulate material in the RCF tested in the bioassay experiments.

The speciation of aluminum (Al) is a critical issue when evaluating the environmental and biological significance of elevated Al concentrations in soil solutions caused by acidic precipitation. Numerous studies have revealed that, with increased concentrations of silica acid in soil, the activity of Al species in soil solutions is greatly modified by SiO(4)(2-). However, thus far there has been little thorough theoretical modeling of this subject. This paper reports a computer simulation of the distribution of Al speciation in soil solutions in equilibrium with the mineral phase imogolite based on a chemical equilibrium calculation. The unique characteristic associated with imogolite reported by previous researchers can be explained theoretically by the proposed model. The dissolved silica has a remarkable influence on Al speciation: increasing concentrations of silica acid may effectively inhibit the formation of polymeric alumino-hydroxo species, and, furthermore, detoxify Al toxicity to plants.

Dissolution of MMVF (man-made vitreous fibers) by macrophages has previously been studied utilizing cell cultures in wells. A new, more dynamic method has been developed to explore the effects of macrophages on MMVF dissolution. In this method, the culture medium flows through a membrane on which the macrophages and fibers are placed. The dissolution of short and long rockwool and glasswool fibers was investigated in the present study by macrophages by assessing the dissolution of Si (silicon), Fe (iron), and Al (aluminium) from the fibers. Dissolution of these elements usually increased as a function of time. Generally, the dissolution of elements from the fibers in the flowthrough culture exceeded that observed with the culture in wells system. The dissolution of glasswool fibers was greater in medium than in cell culture, whereas the opposite was true for rockwool fibers. Dissolution of Si was greater from glasswool than from rockwool fibers, while the opposite was true for Fe and Al. Macrophages that had phagocytized fibers in flowthrough culture contained Si, and there were also precipitations with Si in the samples. The fibers in the flowthrough culture also exhibited surface changes such as breakings, pittings, etching, and peeling. The short rockwool fibers tended to fracture more than short glasswool fibers, while long glasswool fibers were more extensively broken than short glasswool fibers. The results with this new, dynamic, flowthrough culture method with macrophages demonstrate that this method provides valuable information on the abilities of macrophages to dissolve MMVF leading to subsequent morphological changes of fibers.

Asbestosis and silicosis are fibrotic diseases initiated by the inhalation of silica-containing dusts, asbestos and quartz. There are various approaches for explaining the causes of these diseases. At present, our knowledge on the matter indicates that silicic acid dissolved from these minerals, contact between macrophages and minerals, highly reactive and oxidative species formed on the mineral surface, and lysosomal enzymes released upon engulfment of particulate mineral of appropriate size all contribute to various extents to the initiation of fibrosis. Among these mineral solubility seems to have a substantial contribution as a causative factor.

29Si NMR (MAS and CP/MAS) and 1H MAS NMR techniques were used to characterize four sepiolites, two of natural origin (commercialized under the names Pangel and Pansil) and the other two obtained from them by treatment with 2 M or 4 M H2SO4, respectively. These techniques were used to identify the structural and surface changes undergone by sepiolites by the effects of acid treatment and calcination. Various types of Si were detected; also, treatment with 4 M H2SO4 destroyed the sepiolite and produced fibrous silica.

This study was designed to compare the pulmonary cellular proliferative effects of inhaled, size-separated preparations of chrysotile asbestos fibres with similar aerosol fibre concentrations of para-aramid fibrils. Following fibre preparation, rats were exposed for 2 weeks to aerosols of p-aramid fibrils or chrysotile asbestos fibres at design fibre concentrations of 750 and 400 f/cc. Two week exposures to p-aramid fibrils produced transient pulmonary inflammatory and cell labeling responses in terminal bronchiolar and subpleural regions. Similar to p-aramid, exposure to chrysotile produced a transient increase in neutrophils. In contrast, however, substantial increases compared to controls in pulmonary cell labeling indices were measured on terminal bronchiolar, parenchymal, subpleural, and mesothelial surfaces immediately after exposure, and some increases persisted for 3 months postexposure. In complementary studies we demonstrated that p-aramid is biodegradable in the lungs of exposed rats; in contrast, the clearance of long chrysotile fibres was slow or insignificant, resulting in a pulmonary retention of long chrysotile asbestos fibres. The dimensional changes of asbestos fibres as well as the pulmonary cell labeling data indicate that chrysotile asbestos fibres may produce greater long-term pulmonary effects when compared to inhaled para-aramid fibrils.
