This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical composition and biological activity of Salsola tetragona Delile. (Amaranthaceae), a medicinal plant. The study evaluated the antioxidant potential of the crude extract and five fractions of S. tetragona using DPPH•, ABTS•+, CUPRAC, and metal chelating assays. The anti-inflammatory activity was determined using a protein denaturation assay, and the antibacterial activity was determined by the Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains. The MTT test and an in vitro scratch assay evaluated the effects on cell viability and cell migration. The potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity was assessed by analyzing the effects on the interaction between ACE2 and Spike protein. The bioactive compounds present in the plant were identified using LC-HR/MS analysis. The crude hydromethanolic extract (STM) and five fractions of S. tetragona, n-hexane (STH), dichloromethane (STD), ethyl acetate (STE), n-butanol (STB), and aqueous (STW) showed significant antioxidant activity in four different tests. In the anti-inflammatory assay, the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited significantly higher activity than Aspirin® (IC50 = 13 ± 5 µg/mL). The crude extract and its fractions showed positive antibacterial activity with similar MICs. In the cytotoxicity assay against the breast cancer cell line MCF7, the dichloromethane fractions (STD) were very effective and demonstrated superiority over the other fractions (IC50 = 98 µg/mL). Moreover, the potential of the extract and fractions as anti-SARS-CoV-2, the ethyl acetate, and dichloromethane fractions demonstrated important activity in this test. LC-HR/MS analysis identified 16 different phenolic compounds, Eleven of which had not been previously reported in the genus Salsola. The results suggest that the extracts of S. tetragona have the potential to become new sources for developing plant-based therapies for managing a range of diseases.

This research work is focused in study of the dilation/retreat properties of ceramic membranes and its characterization. The clay used in this work is collected in the region of Midelt in Morocco. This raw material has been characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA/DTA and X-ray fluorescence. These analyzes show that this clay consists essentially of Quartz and Kaolinite. Then, the clay pastes containing different proportions of the organic additive are aged and used to develop rods and bricks of known geometric dimensions. However, the pastilles were developed by dry process. After drying in the open air with a different percentage of the organic matter (0–15%), the parts are treated at different temperatures (700, 800, 900, 1000 and 1050 °C) according to a suitable heating program, taking into account the initial mineralogical composition and the TGA/DTA thermograms of the samples. The dilation/retreat properties of the processed samples are discussed according to the variation of predetermined parameters such as weight loss, length, height and diameter. The evolution of the porosity, the mechanical and chemical resistance of the samples is determined. It has been found that the organic additive increases the porosity of the parts prepared by its degradation by the heat treatment and the results obtained show that the prepared materials have a high mechanical strength and chemical resistance and they have improved porosity. Indeed, the clay studied will be used to develop tubular membranes intended for the tangential filtration of wastewater, which will be the subject of the second part of this study.

This research work opens up the possibility of developing tubular mineral membranes from Moroccan clay powders and their use in water permeability tests and wastewater treatment. The aim is to show the possibility of using clay as a low-cost raw material for the production of ceramic membranes with high mechanical and chemical performances.In a first step, we developed ceramic membranes by extruding a prepared plastic paste with the addition of an optimized amount of wood powder as organic matter (OM) to improve the porosity characteristics of the final products after firing. Several parameters are controlled such as the chemical and mineralogical composition of the starting clay powder, the granulometry and the final sintering temperature.The effect of sintering temperature in the range from 800 to 1000 °C, and OM addition (5, 10, 15wt%) on tubular membrane properties such as mechanical and chemical resistance, porosity and permeability were investigated. It was found that the incorporation of OM in the raw clay enhance the pore volume and the permeate flux but it was also accompanied by a decrease in mechanical strength. The membrane sintered at 1000 °C with 15wt% of OM is considered as optimized membrane and it was applied for the second stage of this work. This stage concerns the treatment of wastewater from a thermal complex located 12 km south of the city of Meknes, Morocco, through a treatment by a biological disk microstation. The filtrate obtained then undergoes tangential filtration by the membranes elaborated and optimized following the evolution of the pollution parameters. Based on physicochemical and biological analyses of wastewater after treatment by the coupled system, the membranes obtained have a good permeability and an excellent pollution removal performance.
