Rare earth (RE) silicate environmental barrier coatings (EBCs), with superior physicochemical properties and resistance to hot water-oxygen and calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) corrosion, are ideal candidates for safeguarding the next-generation aviation engines made of SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). However, improving the corrosion resistance of RE silicates remains a critical challenge due to severe environmental degradation at 1500 °C. Herein, by doping multiple RE elements and designing high entropy formulations, researchers found that multicomponent RE silicates could establish stable lattice structures, phase compositions, and reaction products while impeding the infiltration of corrosive agents. This paper reviews the modulation of their phase stability, physicochemical properties, wettability, and corrosion behaviors. It looks at how state-of-the-art optimization solutions of multicomponent and high entropy doping strategies affected corrosion resistant behaviors. In conclusion, the authors suggest further studies to optimize the corrosion resistance of multicomponent RE silicates and highlight the importance of integrating multicomponent doping with high-throughput and other optimization methods, thereby unlocking an array of possibilities for advancing RE silicate EBCs.

Schisandra chinensis is a functional fruit with tonic effect and was widely used by traditional Chinese medicine for treatment and health care. The quality of Schisandra chinensis fruit may vary by different storage condition. In this study, the influence of ambient temperature, humidity, packaging materials and period of storage on the quality of Schisandra chinensis fruits were investigated. The contents of main active components lignans and organic acids were simultaneously determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole electrostatic field orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC Orbitrap HRMS). The antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH radical scavenging capacity, ABTS+ inhibition rate and FRAP value. The correlation of multicomponent and antioxidant activity was analyzed by grey relevance analysis. Taking the changes of multicomponent and antioxidant activity as investigation index, Schisandra chinensis fruits under different storage conditions was comprehensively evaluated. Schisandrol A, malic acid, sorbic acid, schizandrin A, schizandrin B, and schisandrol B were the main effective components of antioxidant activity. Ambient temperature at 5 °C and humidity at 40 % were more suitable for Schisandra chinensis fruits and kraft paper bag was better packaging material. Do not exceed 1 year was the effective storage period. For the safety evaluation, no aflatoxin was detected within the storage period of 2 years, demonstrated the storage was satisfactory. This study provided a reference for the high-quality storage and standardized operating procedures for storage of Schisandra chinensis fruits.

Bicyclic ortho-amino carbonitriles (tetrahydronaphthalenes) are crucial in their role to develop other heterocyclic compounds such as dicyanoanilines which can be used in optical electronic (optronic) devices. Tetrahydronaphthalenes can be obtained via the four-component reaction of malononitrile (2 equivalents), a cyclic ketone and an aldehyde. On the other hand, 5,6-substituted-2-amino-3-cyanopyridines (tetrahydroquinolines) have been found to be potent anti-cancer, anti-hypertensive, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agents. The synthesis of such compounds is directly linked by the single reactant replacement (SRR) technique because they derive from the combination of malononitrile, a cyclic ketone, an aldehyde and ammonium acetate as a nitrogen source. In this study, the activity of the heterogeneous metal-free catalyst DABCO supported on Amberlyst® 15 was explored in relation to the synthesis of both mentioned scaffolds. To the best of our knowledge, there are no instances in the literature where this has been achieved using the same catalyst, furthermore a novel successful DABCO-Amberlyst®15 catalysed one-pot sequential combination of multicomponent reactions (MCR2) was also reported.

In this paper, an improved multicomponent lattice Boltzmann model is employed to investigate the impact of the gas properties, specifically the gas adiabatic index, on the thermodynamic effects of cavitation bubble collapse. The study focuses on analyzing the temperature evolution in the flow field and the resulting thermal effects on the surrounding wall. The accuracy of the developed model is verified through comparisons with analytical solutions of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation and the validation of the adiabatic law. Then, a thermodynamic model of cavitation bubble composed of two-mixed gases collapsing near a wall is established to explore the influence of the gas adiabatic index γ on the temperature behavior. Key findings include the observation that the γ affects the temperature of the first collapse significantly, while its influence on the second collapse is minimal. Additionally, the presence of low-temperature regions near the bubble surface during collapse impacts both bubble and wall temperatures. The study also demonstrates that the γ affects maximum and minimum wall temperatures. The results have implications for selecting specific non-condensable gas properties within cavitation bubbles for targeted cooling or heating purposes, including potential applications in electronic component cooling and environmental refrigeration.

Soft biomaterials hold great potential for a plethora of biomedical applications because of their deformability, biodegradability, biocompatibility, high bioactivity, and low antigenicity. Multicomponent soft biomaterials are particularly attractive as a way of accommodating components made of different materials and generating combinative functions. Microfluidic technology has emerged as an outstanding tool in generating multicomponent materials with elaborate structures and constituents, in that it can manipulate multiphasic flows precisely on the micron scale. In recent decades, much progress has been achieved in the microfluidic fabrication of multicomponent soft biomaterials with finely defined physicochemical properties capable of controllable therapeutics delivery, three-dimensional (3D) cell culture, flexible devices and wearable electronics, and biosensing for molecules. In the paper, we summarize current progress in multicomponent soft biomaterials derived from microfluidics and emphasize their applications in biomedical fields. We also provide an outlook of the remaining challenges and future trends in this field.

A multicomponent vapour-deposited porous (MVP) coating with combined physical and biochemical properties was fabricated based on a chemical vapour sublimation and deposition process. Multiple components are used based on their natural thermodynamic properties, being volatile and/or nonvolatile, resulting in the sublimation of water vapour (from an iced template), and a simultaneous deposition process of poly-p-xylylene occurs upon radical polymerization into a disordered structure, forming porous coatings of MVP on various substrates. In terms of physical properties, the coating technology exhibits adjustable hydrophobicity by tuning the surface morphology by timed control of the sublimation of the iced template layer from a substrate. However, by using a nonvolatile solution during fabrication, an impregnation process of the deposited poly-p-xylylene on such a solution with tuning contact angles produces an MVP coating with a customizable elastic modulus based on deformation-elasticity theory. Moreover, patterning physical structures with adjustable pore size and/or porosity of the coatings, as well as modulation and compartmentalization to introduce necessary boundaries of microstructures within one MVP coating layer, can be achieved during the proposed fabrication process. Finally, with a combination of defined solutions comprised of both volatile and nonvolatile multicomponents, including functional biomolecules, growth factor proteins, and living cells, the fabrication of the resultant MVP coating serves devised purposes exhibiting a variety of biological functions demonstrated with versatility for cell proliferation, osteogenesis, adipogenesis, odontogenesis, spheroid growth of stem cells, and a complex coculture system towards angiogenesis. Multicomponent porous coating technology is produced based on vapour sublimation and deposition upon radical polymerization that overturns conventional vapour-deposited coatings, resulting in only dense thin films, and in addition, the versatility of adjusting coating physical and chemical properties by exploiting the volatility mechanism of iced solution templates and accommodation of solute substances during the fabrication process. The MVP coating and the proposed fabrication technique represent a simple approach to provide a prospective interface coating layer for materials science and are attractive for unlimited applications.

In order to investigate the adsorption behavior and mechanism of microplastics (MPs) on multiple coexisting pesticides in practical systems, as well as their hazardous changes upon binding, diethofencarb and pyrimethanil were selected to be studied with four MPs. The adsorption rate of both pesticides would be faster in the binary-component case, conforming to pseudo-second-order kinetics, with adsorption sites and chemical adsorption dominating. And the more hydrophobic the pesticide, the faster the adsorption rate and the higher the adsorption capacity. Diethofencarb belonged to monolayer adsorption, whereas pyrimethanil belonged to monomolecular combined with multilayer adsorption, depending on the size of pesticides. And the adsorption process was both competitive and synergistic when pesticides coexist. In addition, the adsorption process was a spontaneous heat absorption process. Electrostatic forces have little effect on adsorption, while the adsorption capacity can be altered by the adsorption sites and hydrophobicity of MPs. The salting-out effect also facilitated the adsorption process. As for changes in hazard, the bioluminescence of A. fischeri wasn't significantly inhibited, lacking of acute environmental toxicity. However, in vitro digestion experiments demonstrated a significant increase in bioavailability of diethofencarb and pyrimethanil in combination with MPs. Alkyne metathesis in multicomponent catalytic systems, although subject to changes, is still dominated by molybdenum hexacarbonyl as a source of Mo(0). Our findings show that this coordination compound is relatively inert under metathesis conditions, which results in noticeably long induction of catalytic activity, and the kinetics of this transformation can greatly benefit from switching to more labile Mo(0) complexes. Several easily obtainable ones were tested and [Mo(CO)3(py)3] has been chosen as the one exhibiting the most desired features, i.e. nearly instant catalytic activity and relative stability in the air.

It is well-known that the electrodeposition of lithium usually results in the formation of dendrites on the electrode surface. This limits the utilization of metallic lithium as a material for, for example, the negative electrodes of rechargeable batteries. In aqueous solutions, similar dendritic growth of metals is often observed during electrodeposition; however, utilization of multicomponent additives has overcome this shortcoming. Here, we report that the simultaneous utilization of four different additives greatly suppresses the formation of lithium dendrites during electrodeposition in a tetraglyme-based solution. The roles of the additives are discussed, based on the results of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Novel (Ti33Zr33Hf33)x(Ni50Cu50)100−x with x = 40–80 at.%, high entropy alloys (HEAs) developed by equiatomic substitution, each element is varied with five levels so that their microstructure and mechanical properties could be compared to define the effect of different contents. Above all, the (Ti33Zr33Hf33)60(Ni50Cu50)40 HEA exhibits enhanced the plasticity with maintaining high strength due to the occurrence of the C14-type phase of homogeneity morphology.Consequently, in this series of HEAs with equiatomic substitution selected composition with a relatively simple phase, and proceeded with the addition of other elements with good chemical compatibility factors such as atomic size different, valence electron concentration, and mixing enthalpy to induce phase transformation.

Programmed self-assembly and self-organization of well-designed molecular monomers have been widely used to design stable nanostructures with desired structures and unique functions. Due to the nature of the self-assembly process, it is difficult to control the size and morphology of the self-assembled nanomaterials. Multicomponent supramolecular self-assembly can be achieved to control the self-assembly process and provides the possibility to generate a wider and more complex structure, enhance modularity and provide spatiotemporal control of self-assembly. In this review, it is believed that multicomponent self-assembly may offer a new way to build tuning morphology and functionality materials. The tuning of morphology and functionality of multicomponent co-assembly was discussed according to the purpose of their mixing in the following three aspects separately: (1) one of the components can self-assemble individually, the other added components can tune the morphology and functionality of the assemblies, (2) all of the components can self-assemble individually, the mixture can strength the assemblies or generate new functionalities, (3) none of the components can self-assemble individually, but the mixtures can self-assemble into novel properties.

High-entropy ceramics (HECs) have rapidly expanded from high-entropy oxides to high-entropy ultrahigh temperature ceramics/coatings and have drawn extensive attention in the field of ceramics. In addition, high-entropy thermoelectric materials focus on the topic of energy, which is another major driving force to accelerate the development of HECs. In this review, the recent progress on the design and synthesis of chemically complex ceramics is summarized. The fundamental understanding of configurational entropy, phase stability, and formation criterion of HECs are discussed. Critical comments on the compositionally complex ceramics and mixed-valence complex ceramics are presented. The synthesis methods of HECs are summarized, and reactive flash sintering is highlighted as a new strategy to synthesize HECs. The new design ideas and synthesis methods can provide more opportunities to develop high-performance HECs to meet the requirements of cutting-edge applications.

A green catalyst WELPSA-catalyzed three-component condensation (Biginelli) process involving an aldehyde, barbituric/thiobarbituric/1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid, and urea/thiourea/guanidine hydrochloride in a single pot in presence of a green solvent for the production of DHPM have been presented. The catalyst is reusable and this methodology is scalable. By using the in vitro experiments, the antidiabetic potentiality of synthesized compounds that inhibit α-amylase along with α-glucosidase efficiencies was assessed. All the synthesized compounds except for 4a and 4e, showed the most significant inhibition for α-amylase and α-glucosidase activities. Among the synthesized DHPM compounds, 4c and 4b exhibited significant inhibition profiles compared to the standard antidiabetic drug acarbose. Furthermore, synthesized substances' energy-minimized structures, 3D structures, and DFT calculations were performed using Gaussian 09 software, hybrid models, and MM2 force approaches. A new, facile, cost-effective and environment-friendly protocol is reported for the synthesis of 1-amidoalkyl-2-naphthols exploring tannic acid as a novel, cheap and biodegradable catalyst. β-naphthol is condensed with substituted aromatic aldehydes and various amides using catalytic amount of tannic acid in the absence of solvent under thermal (hot plate and oil bath) and microwave irradiation techniques. This green protocol offers many advantages such as short reaction time, use of environment-friendly and cheap catalyst and good to excellent yields.

An efficient grinding protocol for the synthesis of dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives from acetylene ester, hydrazine hydrate, aryl aldehydes and malononitrile under solvent free conditions has been achieved with excellent yields. The structures of the synthesized compounds were deduced by spectroscopic techniques and the compounds were further evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

Highly efficient and eco-friendly, one pot synthesis of 1,2,4,5-tetra substituted imidazoles and 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles was reported under solvent free conditions using nanocrystalline silica supported tin oxide (SiO2:SnO2) as a catalyst with excellent yield. The present methodology offers several advantages such as mild reaction conditions, short reaction time, good yield, high purity of product, recyclable catalyst without a noticeable decrease in catalytic activity and can be used for large scale synthesis. The synthesized SiO2:SnO2 nanocrystalline catalyst was characterized by XRD, BET surface area and TEM techniques.

Protein misfolding can lead to fibrillar and non-fibrillar deposits which are the signs of countless human diseases. A promising strategy for the prevention of such diseases is the inhibition of protein aggregation, and the most crucial step toward effective prevention is the development of small molecules having the potential for protein-aggregation inhibition. In this search, a series of novel steroidal pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines have been synthesized employing steroidal ketone, substituted aldehydes, and 2,6-diaminopyrimidin-4(3H)-one through the microwave-assisted one-pot multicomponent methodology. The aggregation inhibition potential of newly synthesized compounds was evaluated on human lysozyme (HLZ). All the synthesized compounds were found to be efficient in the inhibition of protein aggregation in carefully designed in vitro experiments. Moreover, molecular docking studies also determine the binding interactions between all the synthesized compounds and native HLZ through hydrogen bonding. Environmental sustainable analytical methods were developed by mathematical modification of UV absorption spectra for quality control study of multicomponent formulations consisting of remogliflozin (REM) and teneligliptin (TEN), with good sensitivity and selectivity. Then analytes were quantified by measuring the peak amplitude of the first derivative spectra at zero crossing points at 230.2 nm and 213.8 nm for REG and TEN in the first derivative method. The second method involves the formation of ratio spectra and taking the absorption difference at two selected wavelengths of peak and trough of a spectrum. In the ratio first derivative method peak amplitudes were measured at 235.2 nm and 259.1 nm for simultaneous quantification of REM and TEN respectively. The fourth method was based on the measurement of the peak amplitude of zero-order spectra of analytes generated from the mixture spectrum by subtraction of a constant from the ratio spectrum followed by multiplication with divisor spectrum, Further, the proposed methods were validated systematically to confirm the linearity, precession, accuracy, sensitivity, and selectivity. Finally, validated UV spectroscopic methods were applied for simultaneous quantification of REM and TEN from formulation, and laboratory mixed solutions and statistically compared with the reported HPLC method. Further, recently developed AGREE, Hexagonal greenness and white analytical chemistry, a whiteness evaluation tools were applied to the proposed UV spectroscopic methods and found to be safer analytical methods, compared to the reported expensive, time-consuming and toxic HPLC method. The presence of multicomponent dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) mixtures in porous media can significantly limit the effectiveness of groundwater remediation. A series of column transport and flushing experiments were conducted to quantify the impact of various enhanced flushing agents on dissolution and removal of a multicomponent DNAPL source within a macroscopically homogeneous porous medium. The columns were established with NAPL saturations consisting of an equal mole mixture of cis-1,2-dichloroethene, trichloroethene, and tetrachloroethene. The solubilization agents used included two complexing sugars - hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD and methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MCD); a surfactant - sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS); and a cosolvent - ethanol (EtOH). The chemical flushing agents greatly reduced the time needed to remove each DNAPL component, compared to flushing with water alone. Initial DNAPL-component elution concentrations were successfully predicted using Raoult's Law for MCD, HPCD, and water flushing, indicating that ideal dissolution was initiated by the lower-power enhanced-solubilization agents. EtOH was most efficient at removing the contaminants in terms of normalized mass recovery but least efficient based on a mass-ratio and mole-ratio of contaminant to reagent analysis. SDS was most efficient for contaminant removal when analyzed based on mass-contaminant to mass-reagent recovered and MCD was most effective based on a moles-contaminant to moles-reagent recovered efficiency evaluation. However, in terms of mass flux reduction analysis (i.e. removal metric), SDS was least efficient for contaminant removal compared to all other enhanced-flushing agents tested, especially during the initial stages of DNAPL removal. Results from this study indicate that ideal dissolution was initiated during enhanced-solubilization and that several criteria should be used to evaluate the removal effectiveness of flushing agents for multi-component NAPL systems., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. The present study investigates the effect of different acetylated cassava starch (ACS) concentrations on the physical and rheological properties of multicomponent emulsion-based products at specific pH values. The emulsion-based products were made by mixing 2% (w/v) prepared lipid droplets that were stabilized by either native or heated whey proteins, 0.01% (w/v) flaxseed gum and 0-6.0% (w/v) ACS. The results indicated that particle size, apparent viscosity and rheological moduli of multicomponent emulsion-based products were significantly enhanced with increasing addition amounts of ACS (P < 0.05). Moreover, the microscopic morphology showed that the addition of ACS contributed to the formation of a more compact, uniform, and continuous comb-like network. However, higher ACS concentration was prone to induce visibly larger aggregations and coarser textures, lending to some negative impact on visual appearance and overall acceptability. Moreover, acidic conditions could obviously promote droplet aggregation via electrostatic interactions, whereas neutral conditions had no effect on droplet aggregation. Additionally, when compared with native whey proteins, lipid droplets stabilized by their heated protein forms induced significantly higher apparent viscosities and rheological moduli of multicomponent emulsion-based products (P < 0.05). A rapid synthesis of the core structures of crinane and haemanthamine has been developed, enabled by a multicomponent approach. This work constitutes a formal synthesis of crinane and sets the stage for access to both families of natural products and key analogues. This research dealt with the multicomponent crystal developed from diclofenac potassium and l-proline to improve the pharmaceutical performance of this anti-inflammatory drug. Slow evaporation of the component mixture at a 1:1 M ratio, supported by ultrasonication, yielded a new salt cocrystal, which was characterized using thermal analysis, Karl Fischer titration, infrared spectrophotometry, powder diffractometry, and single crystal diffractometry. This salt cocrystal was confirmed as a tetrahydrate that comprised diclofenac potassium, l-proline, and water (1:1:4), named DKPH. The new salt cocrystal enhanced the solubility of diclofenac potassium by up to 3.56 folds and accelerated the intrinsic dissolution rate of 3.36 folds. It was supported by the solid and solution phase intermolecular interaction study. A different phase, which indicated a monohydrate form of the salt cocrystal, was found from the low humidity chamber during the isotherm sorption study. Objective: To examine the effects of a multicomponent frailty prevention program in community-dwelling older persons with prefrailty., Design: A randomized controlled trial., Setting: A community elderly center in Hong Kong., Participants: Persons aged ≥50 years who scored 1-2 on a simple frailty questionnaire (FRAIL) METHODS: Participants (n = 127) were randomly assigned to a 12-week multicomponent frailty prevention program (exercise, cognitive training, board game activities) or to a wait-list control group. The primary outcomes were FRAIL scores, frailty status, and a combined frailty measure including subjective (FRAIL total score) and objective (grip strength, muscle endurance, balance, gait speed) measures. The secondary outcomes were verbal fluency assessed by dual-task gait speed, attention and memory assessed by digit span task, executive function assessed by the Frontal Assessment Battery, self-rated health, and life satisfaction. Assessments were conducted at baseline and at week 12., Results: The mean age of the participants was 62.2 years, and 88.2% were women. At week 12, the FRAIL score had decreased in the intervention group (-1.3, P < .001) but had increased in the control group (0.3, P < .01) (between-group differences P < .001). In addition, 83.3% and 1.6% of the intervention and control groups, respectively, had reversed from prefrailty to robust phenotype (between-group differences P < .001). Participants in the intervention group also had a greater reduction in the combined frailty score and greater improvements in muscle endurance, balance, verbal fluency, attention and memory, executive function, and self-rated health than those in the control group (all P < .05). There were no significant differences between the groups with respect to grip strength, gait speed, and life satisfaction., Conclusions and Implications: The multicomponent frailty prevention program reduced frailty and improved physical and cognitive functions, and self-rated health in community-dwelling older persons with prefrailty. Two different pathways for the synthesis of annulated pyrido[3,4- b ]indoles are reported using metal-catalyzed cyclotrimerization reactions. A stepwise process using Rh(I)-catalysis in the final step of the synthesis and a multicomponent, tandem catalytic approach using Pd(0)-catalysis both lead to complex nitrogen-containing heterocycles in good yields. Substituent effects are investigated for both pathways, demonstrating that the Pd(0)-catalyzed approach is more sensitive to electron- withdrawing groups.

Older adults frequently experience nocturia and sleep disturbance concurrently, and problems with sleep resulting from nocturia are a major factor accompanying the bother associated with nocturia. A multicomponent treatment strategy is usually warranted. Initial treatment includes lifestyle modification and behavioral treatment with consideration of pelvic floor muscle exercise-based therapy. Early evidence suggests that behavioral treatment results in similar nocturia reductions compared with the most frequently used drug therapies.
