An aging population is associated with an increased prevalence of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and depression. Important aspects of programmes targeted at older people are: to reach those at risk, effective screening, optimising advice, and referral to local interventions. We examined the effect of a preventive health consultation (PRIMUS), a multi-behavioural screening programme for persons aged 55–74 years in primary care. In a multi-centre randomised controlled trial, the effects of participating in the PRIMUS intervention were compared to a comparison group receiving personalised summaries and advice by postal mail, both preceded by a health risk assessment via a questionnaire. The intervention consisted of a baseline health risk assessment, followed by a preventive health consultation (after 4 weeks), and a follow-up visit (2 weeks later) in the primary care centre. A newly developed web-based computer-tailored programme supported the nurse practitioner during the consultation. Main outcomes measures were awareness of, and compliance with referral advice for changing unhealthy lifestyles. Objective: To assess whether cognitive reappraisal and acceptance are effective emotion regulation strategies to decrease the influence of negative affect on intention to accept maternal pertussis vaccination (MPV) among pregnant women in the Netherlands., Methods: An experimental study with baseline and two follow-up measurements was conducted. Participants selected after baseline (N = 382) were randomized into two experimental groups (cognitive reappraisal, acceptance) and a control group. The effect of the experimental manipulations on negative affect was examined with multilevel analyses. A moderation analysis was performed to examine whether the manipulations moderated the association between negative affect and intention., Results: All groups showed a decrease in negative affect (all p's < 0.001), with no differences between groups. A small decrease in the influence of negative affect on intention was found among those who used acceptance., Conclusion: No additional value of the emotion regulation strategies was found compared to the control group. However, exploratory analyses showed that acceptance seemed a promising strategy to decrease the influence of negative affect on intention to accept MPV., Practice Implications: This study stressed the relevance for communication strategies to consider the emotions pregnant women experience during the decision-making process about the MPV., (Copyright © 2022. Objective: To examine the relationship between risk factors for low patient activation and change in patient activation, well-being, and health outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)., Method: A longitudinal prospective study was conducted with measurements at baseline and 20-week follow-up among 603 people with T2DM participating in a group-based walking intervention. Patient activation and risk factors were assessed using online questionnaires. Health outcomes were assessed in participants' general practices., Results: No association was found between risk factors for activation and change in patient activation. Patient activation significantly increased (t(602) = 2.53, p = 0.012) and was associated with an increase in emotional well-being (β = 0.22), exercise behavior (β = 0.17), general diet behavior (β = 0.20), and a reduction in BMI (β = -0.28), weight (β = -0.29), and HbA1c (β = -0.27)., Conclusion: Favorable changes in patient activation, self-management, well-being, and health outcomes occurred during a walking intervention, despite highly prevalent risk factors for low activation and less engagement in self-management., Practice Implications: Group-based walking interventions might empower people with T2DM to begin taking a larger role in their self-care and improve (mental) health outcomes. Vulnerable groups of patients (with multiple risk factors for low activation) can change and presumably need this kind of interventions to be able to change., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. We investigated whether the prevalence of health-related behaviors and overweight in neighborhoods is associated with changes in smoking, sports participation and overweight over 13 years of follow-up in Dutch adults residing in 86 neighborhoods of Eindhoven in 1991. We showed that living in neighborhoods with a high prevalence of non-smoking, no sports participation and overweight increased the odds of quitting smoking, quitting sports and becoming overweight. After adjustments for age, gender, education and neighborhood deprivation this association remained significant for becoming overweight. Neighborhood prevalence of health-related behaviors and overweight appears to be a currently neglected but relevant determinant of changes in health-related behaviors., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine whether low-resource, cost-effective intervention programs can be effective in improving depressed mood in people with HIV. The efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral self-help program (CBS) and a computerized structured writing intervention (SWI) were tested in a pilot randomized controlled trial., Methods: Participants were members of a patient organization. They completed a pretest and posttest. The questionnaire included the HADS. Participants were randomly allocated to CBS (n=24), SWI (n=25) or a waiting list condition (WLC, n=24). To evaluate changes in the continuous outcome measure, a 3 x 2 (group x time) repeated measures ANCOVA was performed. Also, an ANCOVA was performed using change scores., Results: Respondents who followed the CBS improved significantly compared to the WLC. However, for people in the SWI condition no significant improvement on depression was found., Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that a low-resource, cost-effective CBS program seems to be effective in reducing depressed mood in people living with HIV., Practice Implications: Because self-help programs can be delivered through regular mail or the internet, a high number of people could be reached while overcoming geographical and social barriers to treatment., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. This study investigated the effectiveness of a targeted intervention program aimed at at-risk adolescents in a randomized clinical trial design (N=107). This program combined intervention methods which have been proven effective in reducing drinking in young adults, such as an expectancy challenge, cognitive behavioral skill training and brief motivational feedback. Additionally, this intervention contained the new element of discussing biological, cognitive and social risk factors for developing alcohol problems. We investigated whether this seven session program was successful in changing cognitive determinants of drinking behavior and consequently in moderating alcohol use and the development of alcohol-related problems in at-risk adolescents. The intervention was effective in changing several of the targeted cognitive determinants. However, despite the changes in these cognitive determinants of drinking, the experimental group did not show a significant difference in decrease of drinking at posttest compared with the control group. The results did not yield support for any differential long term effects of the intervention. We concluded that although the present intervention successfully changed important cognitive determinants of drinking more is needed to change subsequent drinking behavior in at-risk adolescents.
