Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurological disorder, and it is estimated that, over 6 million people currently suffer from it worldwide and the incidence of PD is expected to increase by two fold in the next 25 years. Unfortunately, none of the prevailing therapies offers complete cure for this disease. At present the best available therapy, levodopa, offers only symptomatic relief by replenishing the dopamine level in the brain. However, serious side effects such as psychosis, depression, and low blood pressure have been reported. Potential drugs that can effectively treat or halt this disease are yet to be discovered. Accumulated data reveals that stabilizing redox homeostasis and energizing mitochondrial function would be an important therapeutic strategy against PD. Several studies have reported the varied neuropharmocological properties of phytochemicals derived from Bacopa monnieri in general. In this chapter we will specifically discuss the role of B. monnieri extract in modulating Parkinson's disease.
