Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important and energy-intensive municipal infrastructures. High energy consumption and relatively low operating performance are major challenges from the perspective of carbon neutrality. However, water–energy nexus analysis and models for WWTPs have rarely been reported to date. In this study, a cloud-model-based energy consumption analysis (CMECA) of a WWTP was conducted to explore the relationship between influent and energy consumption by clustering its influent’s parameters. The principal component analysis (PCA) and K-means clustering were applied to classify the influent condition using water quality and volume data. The energy consumption of the WWTP is divided into five standard evaluation levels, and its cloud digital characteristics (CDCs) were extracted according to bilateral constraints and golden ratio methods. Our results showed that the energy consumption distribution gradually dispersed and deviated from the Gaussian distribution with decreased water concentration and quantity. The days with high energy efficiency were extracted via the clustering method from the influent category of excessive energy consumption, represented by a compact-type energy consumption distribution curve to identify the influent conditions that affect the steady distribution of energy consumption. The local WWTP has high energy consumption with 0.3613 kW·h·m−3 despite low influent concentration and volumes, across four consumption levels from low (I) to relatively high (IV), showing an unsatisfactory operation and management level. The average oxygenation capacity, internal reflux ratio, and external reflux ratio during high energy efficiency days recognized by further clustering were obtained (0.2924–0.3703 kg O2·m−3, 1.9576–2.4787, and 0.6603–0.8361, respectively), which could be used as a guide for the days with low energy efficiency. Consequently, this study offers a water–energy nexus analysis method to identify influent conditions with operational management anomalies and can be used as an empirical reference for the optimized operation of WWTPs.

Considering the limited efficacy of current therapies in lung, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers, innovative combination treatments with diverse mechanisms of action are needed to improve patients’ outcomes. Chitinase-3 like-1 protein (CHI3L1) emerges as a versatile factor with significant implications in various diseases, particularly cancers, fostering an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment for cancer progression. Therefore, pre-clinical validation is imperative to fully realize its potential in cancer treatment. We developed phage display-derived fully human monoclonal CHI3L1 neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) and verified the nAbs-antigen binding affinity and specificity in lung, pancreatic and colorectal cancer cell lines. Tumor growth signals, proliferation and migration ability were all reduced by CHI3L1 nAbs in vitro. Orthotopic or subcutaneous tumor mice model and humanized mouse model were established for characterizing the anti-tumor properties of two CHI3L1 nAb leads. Importantly, CHI3L1 nAbs not only inhibited tumor growth but also mitigated fibrosis, angiogenesis, and restored immunostimulatory functions of immune cells in pancreatic, lung, and colorectal tumor mice models. Mechanistically, CHI3L1 nAbs directly suppressed the activation of pancreatic stellate cells and the transformation of macrophages into myofibroblasts, thereby attenuating fibrosis. These findings strongly support the therapeutic potential of CHI3L1 nAbs in overcoming clinical challenges, including the failure of gemcitabine in pancreatic cancer.

Background: With regard to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), its occurrence and advancement are controlled by genetic and epigenetic anomalies. PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are recognized with significance in tumor, but the precise molecular mechanisms of piRNAs in HNSCC largely remain undisclosed. Methods: Differentially expressed piRNAs were identified by RNA sequencing. The expression of piR-hsa-23533 was evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR and RNA in situ hybridization. The impacts of piR-hsa-23533 on the proliferation and apoptosis of HNSCC cells were investigated by a series of in vitro and in vivo assays. Results: piR-hsa-23533 exhibits upregulation within HNSCC cells and tissues. Besides, piR-hsa-23533 overexpression promotes proliferation while inhibiting apoptosis in vitro and in vivo, while piR-hsa-23533 silencing has an opposite function. From the mechanistic perspective, piR-hsa-23533 can bind to Ubiquitin-specific protease 7 (USP7), as shown through RNA pull-down and RNA immunoprecipitation assays, promoting USP7 mRNA and protein expression. Conclusions: These findings highlight the functional importance of piR-hsa-23533 in HNSCC and may assist in the development of anti-HNSCC therapeutic target.

Effective management of large basins necessitates pinpointing the spatial and temporal drivers of primary index exceedances and urban risk factors, offering crucial insights for basin administrators. Yet, comprehensive examinations of multiple pollutants within the Yangtze River Basin remain scarce. Here we introduce a pollution inventory for urban clusters surrounding the Yangtze River Basin, analyzing water quality data from 102 cities during 2018–2019. We assessed the exceedance rates for six pivotal indicators: dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH3–N), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total phosphorus (TP), and the permanganate index (CODMn) for each city. Employing random forest regression and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analyses, we identified the spatiotemporal factors influencing these key indicators. Our results highlight agricultural activities as the primary contributors to the exceedance of all six indicators, thus pinpointing them as the leading pollution source in the basin. Additionally, forest coverage, livestock farming, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, along with meteorological elements like precipitation and temperature, significantly impacted various indicators' exceedances. Furthermore, we delineate five core urban risk components through principal component analysis, which are (1) anthropogenic and industrial activities, (2) agricultural practices and forest extent, (3) climatic variables, (4) livestock rearing, and (5) principal polluting sectors. The cities were subsequently evaluated and categorized based on these risk components, incorporating policy interventions and administrative performance within each region. The comprehensive analysis advocates for a customized strategy in addressing the discerned risk factors, especially for cities presenting elevated risk levels.

The development and research of high strength and conductivity materials are essential for the advancement of high-field magnets, including pulsed magnets. This study investigates the effect of electromagnetic fields on the solidification casting of binary Cu-6wt%Ag alloy ingots with diameters of 40 and 160 mm. A 3D numerical simulation is performed utilizing the continuum model with conservation of total momentum, mass, energy, and species. The results indicate that applying electromagnetic stirring (EMS) to small cross-section ingots can cause many randomly distributed small regions with higher segregation degrees inside the ingot, which is not conducive to improving the macrosegregation inside the ingot. For large cross-section ingots without EMS, compared to small cross-section ingots, there is more severe macrosegregation inside the ingot, especially the extreme center segregation with a maximum segregation degree of about 414%. EMS can effectively control macrosegregation within a specific range and eliminate center segregation. When the linear EMS's magnetic induction intensity is set to 0.06 T, the maximum segregation degree near the ingot center can be reduced to less than 260%. Simultaneously, the EMS induced forced convection is also instability, leading to numerous haphazard solute accumulations and depletions, which explains many small segregation regions in the ingot. In terms of improving macrosegregation in large cross-section ingots, Linear EMS has a definite advantage over rotary EMS. It is possible to keep the entire segregation degree in the ingot below 100% when the linear EMS's magnetic induction intensity is set to 0.036 T and the stirring frequency is 4 Hz. The ideal stirring parameters range for linear EMS is to maintain the magnetic induction intensity at around 0.036 T and the stirring frequency in the range of 4–8 Hz.

In recent years, there has been significant interest in photocatalytic technologies utilizing semiconductors and photosensitizers responsive to solar light, owing to their potential for energy and environmental applications. Current efforts are focused on enhancing existing photocatalysts and developing new ones tailored for environmental uses. Anthraquinones (AQs) serve as redox-active electron transfer mediators and photochemically active organic photosensitizers, effectively addressing common issues such as low light utilization and carrier separation efficiency found in conventional semiconductors. AQs offer advantages such as abundant raw materials, controlled preparation, excellent electron transfer capabilities, and photosensitivity, with applications spanning the energy, medical, and environmental sectors. Despite their utility, comprehensive reviews on AQs-based photocatalytic systems in environmental contexts are lacking. In this review, we thoroughly describe the photochemical properties of AQs and their potential applications in photocatalysis, particularly in addressing key environmental challenges like clean energy production, antibacterial action, and pollutant degradation. However, AQs face limitations in practical photocatalytic applications due to their low electrical conductivity and solubility-related secondary contamination. To mitigate these issues, the design and synthesis of graphene-immobilized AQs are highlighted as a solution to enhance practical photocatalytic applications. Additionally, future research directions are proposed to deepen the understanding of AQs' theoretical mechanisms and to provide practical applications for wastewater treatment. This review aims to facilitate mechanistic studies and practical applications of AQs-based photocatalytic technologies and to improve understanding of these technologies.

Background: Accurately predicting the survival rate of submandibular gland cancer (SGC) is of significant importance for guiding treatment decision-making and improving patient outcomes. This study was aimed to identify the independent prognostic factors of overall survival (OS) in SGC patients, and develop novel prediction models to aid clinicians in predicting the survival probability. Materials and methods: Patients diagnosed with primary SGC after the year 2010 were extracted from SEER database and then randomly allocated into training and test samples in a 7:3 ratio. Uni- and multi-variable COX analyses were employed using the training sample to ascertain independent prognostic factors for OS. Subsequently, graphic and online dynamic nomograms were established basing on the independent prognostic factors. We utilized C-index, calibration curve, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and area under ROC curve (AUC) value to evaluate the discrimination capacity and the consistency between predicted and actual survival. Results: A total of 527 SGC patients were included (369 assigned to training group and 158 assigned to test group). The multivariable COX analysis showed that age, sex, marital status, tumor histology, summary stage, metastases to bone, and tumor size were independently associated with OS. Novel graphical and online dynamic (URL: https://yangxg1209.shinyapps.io/overall_survival_submandibular_gland_tumor/) nomograms were established. The C-indices (training: 0.77, 95%CI 0.71–0.84; test: 0.77, 95%CI 0.68–0.85) indicate favorable discrimination ability of the model, and the calibration curves demonstrated favorable consistency between the predicted and actual survival rates. Conclusions: Our study identified the independent prognostic factors influencing OS in patients with SGC, and successfully established and validated novel nomograms, which provide accurate prediction of survival rates and allows for personalized risk assessment.

Iron homeostasisis is integral to normal physiological and biochemical processes of lungs. The maintenance of iron homeostasis involves the process of intake, storage and output, dependening on iron-regulated protein/iron response element system to operate tightly metabolism-related genes, including TFR1, DMT1, Fth, and FPN. Dysregulation of iron can lead to iron overload, which increases the virulence of microbial colonisers and the occurrence of oxidative stress, causing alveolar epithelial cells to undergo necrosis and apoptosis, and form extracellular matrix. Accumulated iron drive iron-dependent ferroptosis to exacerbated pulmonary fibrosis. Notably, the iron chelator deferoxamine and the lipophilic antioxidant ferritin-1 have been shown to attenuate ferroptosis and inhibit lipid peroxidation in pulmonary fibrosis. The paper summarises the regulatory mechanisms of dysregulated iron metabolism and ferroptosis in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. Targeting iron metabolism may be a potential therapeutic strategy for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary fibrosis.

Ticks are primary vectors for many tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) and pose a serious threat to veterinary and public health. Information on the presence of TBPs in Chinese Milu deer (Elaphurus davidianus) is limited. In this study, a total of 102 Chinese Milu deer blood samples were examined for Anaplasma spp., Theileria spp., Babesia spp., Rickettsia spp., and Borrelia spp., and three TBPs were identified: Anaplasma phagocytophilum (48; 47.1 %), Candidatus Anaplasma boleense (47; 46.1%), and Theileria capreoli (8; 7.8 %). Genetic and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA confirmed their identity with corresponding TBPs. To our knowledge, this is the first report on Candidatus A. boleense and T. capreoli detection in Chinese Milu deer. A high prevalence of A. phagocytophilum with veterinary and medical significance was identified in endangered Chinese Milu deer, which could act as potential zoonotic reservoirs. The identification of the TBPs in Chinese Milu deer provides useful information for the prevention and control of tick-borne diseases.

Understanding the spatial distribution of the crop yield gap (YG) is essential for improving crop yields. Recent studies have typically focused on the site scale, which may lead to considerable uncertainties when scaled to the regional scale. To mitigate this issue, this study used a process-based and remote sensing driven crop yield model for winter wheat (PRYM-Wheat), which was derived from the boreal ecosystem productivity simulator (BEPS), to simulate the YG of winter wheat in the North China Plain from 2015 to 2019. Yield validation based on statistical yield data revealed good performance of the PRYM-Wheat Model in simulating winter wheat actual yield (Ya). The distribution of Ya across the North China Plain showed great heterogeneity, decreasing from southeast to northwest. The remote sensing-estimated results show that the average YG of the study area was 6 400.6 kg ha−1. The YG of Jiangsu Province was the largest, at 7 307.4 kg ha−1, while the YG of Anhui Province was the smallest, at 5 842.1 kg ha−1. An analysis of the responses of YG to environmental factors showed no obvious correlation between YG and precipitation, but there was a weak negative correlation between YG and accumulated temperature. In addition, the YG was positively correlated with elevation. In general, studying the specific features of the YG can provide directions for increasing crop yields in the future.

Accurate estimation of regional winter wheat yields is essential for understanding the food production status and ensuring national food security. However, using the existing remote sensing-based crop yield models to accurately reproduce the inter-annual and spatial variations in winter wheat yields remains challenging due to the limited ability to acquire irrigation information in water-limited regions. Thus, we proposed a new approach to approximating irrigations of winter wheat over the North China Plain (NCP), where irrigation occurs extensively during the winter wheat growing season. This approach used irrigation pattern parameters (IPPs) to define the irrigation frequency and timing. Then, they were incorporated into a newly-developed process-based and remote sensing-driven crop yield model for winter wheat (PRYM–Wheat), to improve the regional estimates of winter wheat over the NCP. The IPPs were determined using statistical yield data of reference years (2010–2015) over the NCP. Our findings showed that PRYM–Wheat with the optimal IPPs could improve the regional estimate of winter wheat yield, with an increase and decrease in the correlation coefficient (R) and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.15 (about 37%) and 0.90 t ha–1 (about 41%), respectively. The data in validation years (2001–2009 and 2016–2019) were used to validate PRYM–Wheat. In addition, our findings also showed R (RMSE) of 0.80 (0.62 t ha–1) on a site level, 0.61 (0.91 t ha–1) for Hebei Province on a county level, 0.73 (0.97 t ha–1) for Henan Province on a county level, and 0.55 (0.75 t ha–1) for Shandong Province on a city level. Overall, PRYM–Wheat can offer a stable and robust approach to estimating regional winter wheat yield across multiple years, providing a scientific basis for ensuring regional food security.

Purpose: This study aimed to translate and validate a Chinese version of the Comprehensive assessment of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy processes (CompACT-C), a 23-item questionnaire for measuring an individual's level of psychological flexibility among Chinese breast cancer survivors for utilisation of Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)-based interventions in breast cancer patients. Methods: Six translators translated the original English version into Chinese according to Brislin's Translation Model. Psychometric properties tests were conducted on the CompACT-C, including internal consistency, test–retest reliability (two-week interval), face validity, content validity, convergent validity with experiential avoidance, and construct validity (confirmatory factor analysis). Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a significant environmental concern due to its adverse effects and ecological risks. SMX elimination in aquatic environments via photocatalysis presents a viable solution, given its high oxidation potential. However, such a solution remains controversial, primarily due to a lack of selectivity. Here we introduce a molecularly imprinted TiO2@Fe2O3@g-C3N4 (MFTC) photocatalyst designed for the selective degradation of SMX. To assess MFTC's selectivity, we applied it to degrade synthetic wastewater containing SMX alongside interfering species sulfadiazine (SDZ), ibuprofen (IBU), and bisphenol A (BPA). The results demonstrated a selective degradation efficiency rate of 96.8%, nearly twice that of competing pollutants. The molecularly imprinted sites within the catalyst played a crucial role by selectively capturing SMX and enhancing its adsorption, thereby improving catalytic efficiency. The degradation process involved •OH and •O2− free radicals, with a newly proposed double Z-scheme mechanism and potential pathway for SMX degradation by the MFTC photocatalytic system. This study enriches the application of photocatalysis using molecularly imprinted nanocomposite materials for treating complex pollutant mixtures in water.

Summary: To guide individualized intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), we developed and prospectively validated a multiview radiomics risk model for predicting radiation-induced hypothyroidism in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. And simulated radiotherapy plans with same dose-volume-histogram (DVH) but different dose distributions were redesigned to explore the clinical application of the multiview radiomics risk model. The radiomics and dosiomics were built based on selected radiomics and dosiomics features from planning computed tomography and dose distribution, respectively. The multiview radiomics risk model that integrated radiomics, dosiomics, DVH parameters, and clinical factors had better performance than traditional normal tissue complication probability models. And multiview radiomics risk model could identify differences of patient hypothyroidism-free survival that cannot be stratified by traditional models. Besides, two redesigned simulated plans further verified the clinical application and advantage of the multiview radiomics risk model. The multiview radiomics risk model was a promising method to predict radiation-induced hypothyroidism and guide individualized IMRT.

Neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer affecting the sympathetic nervous system, continues to challenge the development of potent treatments due to the limited availability of druggable targets for this aggressive illness. Recent investigations have uncovered that phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH), an essential enzyme for de novo serine synthesis, serves as a non-oncogene dependency in high-risk neuroblastoma. In this study, we show that homoharringtonine (HHT) acts as a PHGDH inhibitor, inducing intricate alterations in cellular metabolism, and thus providing an efficient treatment for neuroblastoma. We have experimentally verified the reliance of neuroblastoma on PHGDH and employed molecular docking, thermodynamic evaluations, and X-ray crystallography techniques to determine the bond interactions between HHT and PHGDH. Administering HHT to treat neuroblastoma resulted in effective cell elimination in vitro and tumor reduction in vivo. Metabolite and functional assessments additionally disclosed that HHT treatment suppressed de novo serine synthesis, initiating intricate metabolic reconfiguration and oxidative stress in neuroblastoma. Collectively, these discoveries highlight the potential of targeting PHGDH using HHT as a potent approach for managing high-risk neuroblastoma.

Summary: Background: MRI is the routine examination to surveil the recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, but it has relatively lower sensitivity than PET/CT. We aimed to find if artificial intelligence (AI) could be competent pre-inspector for MRI radiologists and whether AI-aided MRI could perform better or even equal to PET/CT. Methods: This multicenter study enrolled 6916 patients from five hospitals between September 2009 and October 2020. A 2.5D convolutional neural network diagnostic model and a nnU-Net contouring model were developed in the training and test cohorts and used to independently predict and visualize the recurrence of patients in the internal and external validation cohorts. We evaluated the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of AI and compared AI with MRI and PET/CT in sensitivity and specificity using the McNemar test. The prospective cohort was randomized into the AI and non-AI groups, and their sensitivity and specificity were compared using the Chi-square test. Findings: The AI model achieved AUCs of 0.92 and 0.88 in the internal and external validation cohorts, corresponding to the sensitivity of 79.5% and 74.3% and specificity of 91.0% and 92.8%. It had comparable sensitivity to MRI (e.g., 74.3% vs. 74.7%, P = 0.89) but lower sensitivity than PET/CT (77.9% vs. 92.0%, P

Ischemic stroke is the main reason of disability and mortality in many countries, and currently has limited treatments. The post-stroke inflammation characterized with microglia activation and polarization has been regarded as a promising therapeutic target for ischemic stroke. After ischemia, the activated microglia polarize to classical (M1) phenotype or alternative (M2) phenotype and exhibit biphasic function. Promoting microglia phenotype shift from deleterious M1 phenotype to neuroprotective M2 phenotype will be promising in stroke treatment. Increasing evidence indicates that the erythropoietin-producing human hepatocellular (Eph) receptor A4 (EphA4), a kind of abundant Eph receptor, distributes mainly in neuron and participates in multiple links of pathological changes after ischemia. This paper discussed the hypothesis that EphA4 receptor could affect ischemic brain injury through EphA4/ephrin bidirectional signaling between neuron and microglia, and then explored its underlying mechanisms. We manipulated EphA4/ephrin signaling with either EphA4 overexpression lentiviral vectors or the short hairpin RNA (shRNA) to upregulate or knock down neuronal EphA4 expression. NF-κB inhibitor pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate ammonium salt (PDTC) was applied to block NF-κB pathway. According to the experimental results, upregulated neuronal EphA4 induced by ischemia deteriorated neurological function as well as brain damage by shifting microglia M1-polarization via promoting NF-κB signaling.

Background: Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a bioactive component of propolis, has beneficial effects on cancer prevention. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is an antitumor gene of bladder cancer. Therefore, this study investigated the anti-cancer effect of CAPE on bladder carcinoma cells and related mechanisms. Methods: The expressions of GDF15, N-myc downstream-regulated gene 1 (NDRG1), and maspin, and the activations of extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK), c-jun Nterminal kinase (JNK), p38, and 50 adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) α1/2 in human bladder cells after gene transfection or knockdown were determined by immunoblot, real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and reporter assays. The assays of 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU), CyQUANT cell proliferation, and Matrigel invasion, and the xenograft animal study were used to assess the cell proliferation, invasion, and tumorigenesis. Results: GDF15 expression in epithelial cells was negatively correlated with neoplasia in vitro. Also, GDF15 exhibits in bladder fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. CAPE-induced expressions of NDRG1 and maspin decreased cell proliferation and invasion of bladder carcinoma cells in a GDF15-dependent manner in vitro. The xenograft animal study suggesting CAPE attenuated tumor growth in vivo. CAPE increased phosphorylation of ERK, JNK, p38, and AMPKα1/2 to modulate the GDF15 expressions. Pretreatments with ERK, JNK, or p38 inhibitors partially inhibited the CAPE effects on the inductions of GDF15, NDRG1, or maspin. Knockdown of AMPKα1/2 attenuated the CAPE-induced GDF15 expression and cell proliferation in bladder carcinoma cells. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that CAPE is a promising agent for anti-tumor growth in human bladder carcinoma cells via the upregulation of GDF15.

Motivated by the carbon neutrality target, strategic planning for a low-carbon transition of sludge treatment and disposal in China is challenging due to the unpredictability of technical, regional, socioeconomic, and political factors affecting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study combines the use of a Life Cycle Assessment and the Patient Rule Induction Method, accounting for possibilities that could achieve net-zero carbon emissions by exploring multiple plausible future profiles of sludge treatment and disposal. Results show that reducing sludge landfill and increasing anaerobic digestion are effective methods to facilitate GHG reduction. Achieving carbon neutrality is closely linked to developing a cleaner electricity mix. Based on a cascaded scenario analysis considering regional differences for 31 Chinese provinces, results demonstrated a maximum cumulative reduction potential of 371 Mt CO2 equivalents from 2020 to 2050, equal to 59.84% of the business-as-usual scenario. Together with GHG reductions, terrestrial acidification and ecotoxicity as well as freshwater ecotoxicity are synergistically reduced. However, the shifting environmental burden results in freshwater eutrophication, human toxicity, marine ecotoxicity, marine eutrophication, and photochemical oxidant formation. This study presents a novel method for systematically identifying possible future development paths toward carbon neutrality. The findings may support policy designs for achieving target carbon reduction effects for sludge disposal.

Summary: Background: Radiotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (TLI) can regress or resolve in the early phase, but it is irreversible at a later stage. However, no study has proposed a risk-based follow-up schedule for its early detection. Planning evaluation is difficult when dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters are similar and optimization is terminated. Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included 6065 patients between 2014 and 2018. A 3D ResNet-based deep learning model was developed in training and validation cohorts and independently tested using concordance index in internal and external test cohorts. Accordingly, the patients were stratified into risk groups, and the model-predicted risks were used to develop risk-based follow-up schedules. Recently, the highly ordered J-aggregates of organic dyes with intriguing optical properties have received considerable attention in biomedical applications. Herein, binary metal ions Mn(II)/Fe(III) are used to induce the formation of indocyanine green (ICG) J-aggregates. Further, the sheet-like J-aggregates are able to act as ''carriers'' for loading hydrophobic chemotherapeutic gambogic acid (GA), realizing the effect of ''killing two birds with one stone'' for both treatment and delivery. The as-designed nanoassembly is formed spontaneously in aqueous environment via π-π stacking, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic force, exhibiting enhanced photostability of ICG and outstanding reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation ability. Moreover, significant inhibition of tumor growth by the synergetic effect of phototherapy and chemotherapy is verified in a subcutaneous 4T1 tumors model. In conclusion, this work not only presents a facile and green approach to manufacture carrier-free nanodrugs, but also establishes a universal platform that has potential application in the co-delivery of near-infrared dye and hydrophobic molecules.

With the rapid growth yield of global sewage sludge, rational and effective treatment and disposal methods are becoming increasingly needed. Biochar preparation is an attractive option for sewage sludge treatment, the excellent physical and chemical properties of sludge derived biochar make it an attractive option for environmental improvement. Here, the current application state of sludge derived biochar was comprehensively reviewed, and the advances in the mechanism and capacity of sludge biochar in water contaminant removal, soil remediation, and carbon emission reduction were described, with particular attention to the key challenges involved, e.g., possible environmental risks and low efficiency. Several new strategies for overcoming sludge biochar application barriers to realize highly efficient environmental improvement were highlighted, including biochar modification, co-pyrolysis, feedstock selection and pretreatment. The insights offered in this review will facilitate further development of sewage sludge derived biochar, towards addressing the obstacles in its application in environmental improvement and global environmental crisis.

Abstract Background Artificial intelligence can assist in cardiac image interpretation. Here, we achieved a substantial reduction in time required to read a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) study to estimate left atrial volume without compromising accuracy or reliability. Rather than deploying a fully automatic black-box, we propose to incorporate the automated LA volumetry into a human-centric interactive image-analysis process. Methods and results Atri-U, an automated data analysis pipeline for long-axis cardiac cine images, computes the atrial volume by: (i) detecting the end-systolic frame, (ii) outlining the endocardial borders of the LA, (iii) localizing the mitral annular hinge points and constructing the longitudinal atrial diameters, equivalent to the usual workup done by clinicians. In every step human interaction is possible, such that the results provided by the algorithm can be accepted, corrected, or re-done from scratch. Atri-U was trained and evaluated retrospectively on a sample of 300 patients and then applied to a consecutive clinical sample of 150 patients with various heart conditions. The agreement of the indexed LA volume between Atri-U and two experts was similar to the inter-rater agreement between clinicians (average overestimation of 0.8 mL/m2 with upper and lower limits of agreement of − 7.5 and 5.8 mL/m2, respectively). An expert cardiologist blinded to the origin of the annotations rated the outputs produced by Atri-U as acceptable in 97% of cases for step (i), 94% for step (ii) and 95% for step (iii), which was slightly lower than the acceptance rate of the outputs produced by a human expert radiologist in the same cases (92%, 100% and 100%, respectively). The assistance of Atri-U lead to an expected reduction in reading time of 66%—from 105 to 34 s, in our in-house clinical setting. Conclusions Our proposal enables automated calculation of the maximum LA volume approaching human accuracy and precision. The optional user interaction is possible at each processing step. As such, the assisted process sped up the routine CMR workflow by providing accurate, precise, and validated measurement results.

An effective sponge city construction evaluation system plays a crucial role in evaluating sponge city construction schemes. The construction of a sponge city evaluation system still faces challenges related to incomplete index selection and unscientific weight division. Limited studies have focused on the comprehensive assessment of sponge city construction in the early stages. This study constructed a scientific assessment indicator system and a quantitative indicator weight at all levels by literature review and statistical analysis methods from an objective perspective. To demonstrate how to utilize our evaluation methods, three construction schemes randomly generated by MATLAB were evaluated under evaluation states of constant weight and variable weight, respectively. Scheme 3 had the highest score of 0.638 under the constant weight assessment, but it cannot practically be the final construction scheme due to the imbalance between indicators. Compared to the constant weight assessment, a variable weight assessment can effectively balance the states of the evaluation index with changes in the decision variable. Among the three schemes, Scheme 2 is the best choice with a value of 0.0355 under variable weight evaluation due to punishment and incentives in the variable weight method. The concept of “punishing” a disadvantageous indicator and “motivating” an advantageous indicator increases the relative advantages of the indices, ultimately affecting the assessment results of schemes and leading to a more balanced state. This study provides reasonable analysis and decision-making mechanisms to support decision-making and guide the scientific selection of a construction scheme.

Cardiac remodelling mainly manifests as excessive myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis, which are associated with heart failure. Gentianella acuta (G. acuta) is reportedly effective in cardiac protection; however, the mechanism by which it protects against cardiac remodelling is not fully understood. Here, we discuss the effects and mechanisms of G. acuta in transverse aortic constriction (TAC)-induced cardiac remodelling in rats. Cardiac function was analysed using echocardiography and electrocardiography. Haematoxylin and eosin, Masson′s trichrome, and wheat germ agglutinin staining were used to observe pathophysiological changes. Additionally, real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blotting were used to measure protein levels and mRNA levels of genes related to myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis. Immunofluorescence double staining was used to investigate the co-expression of endothelial and interstitial markers. Western blotting was used to estimate the expression and phosphorylation levels of the regulatory proteins involved in autophagy and endothelial-mesenchymal transition (EndMT). The results showed that G. acuta alleviated cardiac dysfunction and remodelling. The elevated levels of myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis markers, induced by TAC, decreased significantly after G. acuta intervention. G. acuta decreased the expression of LC3 II and Beclin1, and increased p62 expression. G. acuta upregulated the expression of CD31 and vascular endothelial-cadherin, and prevented the expression of α-smooth muscle actin and vimentin. Furthermore, G. acuta inhibited the PI3K/Akt/FOXO1/3a pathway and activated the Notch signalling. These findings demonstrated that G. acuta has cardioprotective effects, such as alleviating myocardial fibrosis, inhibiting hypertrophy, reducing autophagy, and blocking EndMT by regulating the PI3K/Akt/FOXO1/3a and Notch signalling pathways.

Pulmonary fibrosis is an abnormal wound-healing response to repeated alveolar injury, characterized by continuous inflammation and abnormal collagen deposition. Its treatment is problematic. Astragaloside (AST) is an active component of Astragalus membranaceus with anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Although the underlying mechanisms are unknown, AST is also used to treat fibrotic diseases. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of action of AST in pulmonary fibrosis treatment. We found that AST significantly improved restrictive ventilatory impairment, compliance, total lung capacity, and functional residual capacity. In mice with pulmonary fibrosis, extracellular matrix deposition in the pulmonary parenchyma and intemperate inflammation were reversed. This therapeutic effect can be attributed to autophagy, activating the genes for autophagy flux and autophagic vacuoles. Impaired autophagy increased susceptibility to pulmonary fibrosis by exacerbating collagen deposition in vitro and in vivo. Using a combination of molecular docking and network pharmacology, the Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway was identified as a possible candidate for the pharmacologic target of AST. Functional dephosphorylation of MEK and ERK inhibited the Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway, which converges at the rapamycin switch to initiate autophagy. Inhibitors of Ras and MEK regulated autophagy. These findings suggest that AST might treat pulmonary fibrosis by modulating the Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway mediated by depression.

Yield gap exists because the current attained actual grain yield cannot yet achieve the estimated yield potential. Chinese high yield maize belt has a wide span from east to west which results in different solar radiations between different regions and thus different grain yields. We used multi-site experimental data, surveyed farmer yield data, the highest recorded yield data in the literatures, and simulations with Hybrid-Maize Model to assess the yield gap and tried to reduce the yield gap by matching the solar radiation and plant density. The maize belt was divided into five regions from east to west according to distribution of accumulated solar radiation. The results showed that there were more than 5.8 Mg ha–1 yield gaps between surveyed farmer yield and the yield potential in different regions of China from east to west, which just achieved less than 65% of the yield potential. By analyzing the multi-site density experimental data, we found that the accumulated solar radiation was significantly correlated to optimum plant density which is the density with the highest yield in the multi-site density experiment (y=0.09895×–32.49, P

The uneven distribution of solar radiation is one of the main reasons for the variations in the yield gap between different regions in China and other countries of the world. In this study, different solar radiation levels were created by shading and the yield gaps induced by those levels were analyzed by measuring the aboveground and underground growth of maize. The experiments were conducted in Qitai, Xinjiang, China, in 2018 and 2019. The maize cultivars Xianyu 335 (XY335) and Zhengdan 958 (ZD958) were used with planting density of 12×104 plants ha–1 under either high solar radiation (HSR) or low solar radiation (LSR, 70% of HSR). The results showed that variation in the solar radiation resulted in a yield gap and different cultivars behaved differently. The yield gaps of XY335 and ZD958 were 8.9 and 5.8 t ha–1 induced by the decreased total intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (TIPAR) of 323.1 and 403.9 MJ m-2 from emergence to the maturity stage, respectively. The average yield of XY335 was higher than that of ZD958 under HSR, while the average yield of ZD958 was higher than that of XY335 under LSR. The light intercepted by the canopy and the photosynthetic rates both decreased with decreasing solar radiation. The aboveground dry matter decreased by 11.1% at silking and 21% at maturity, and the dry matter of vegetative organs and reproductive organs decreased by 9.8 and 20.9% at silking and by 12.1 and 25.5% at physiological maturity, respectively. Compared to the HSR, the root weights of XY335 and ZD958 decreased by 54.6 and 45.5%, respectively, in the 0–60 cm soil layer under LSR at silking stage. The aboveground and underground growth responses to different solar radiation levels explained the difference in yield gap. Selecting suitable cultivars can increase maize yield and reduce the yield gaps induced by variation of the solar radiation levels in different regions or under climate change.

Autophagy is associated with the cytoprotection of physiological processes against inflammation and oxidative stress. Salvia miltiorrhiza possesses cardiovascular protective actions and has powerful anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects; however, whether and how Salvia miltiorrhiza-derived microRNAs (miRNAs) protect vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) by inducing autophagy across species are unknown. We first screened and identified Sal-miR-58 from Salvia miltiorrhiza as a natural autophagy inducer. Synthetic Sal-miR-58 suppresses chronic angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion-induced abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation in mice, as well as induces autophagy in VSMCs and attenuates the inflammatory response elicited by Ang II in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, Sal-miR-58 downregulates Krüppel-like factor 3 (KLF3) expression through direct binding to the 3′ UTR of KLF3, which in turn relieves KLF3 repression of E3 ubiquitin ligase neural precursor cell-expressed developmentally downregulated 4-like (NEDD4L) expression, whereas NEDD4L upregulation increases the ubiquitination and degradation of the platelet isoform of phosphofructokinase (PFKP), subsequently leading to a decrease in the activation of Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and facilitating VSMC autophagy induced by Sal-miR-58 in the context of chronic Ang II stimulation and aneurysm formation. Our results provide the first evidence that plant-derived Sal-miR-58 induces autophagy and attenuates inflammation in VSMCs through cross-species modulation of the KLF3/NEDD4L/PFKP regulatory pathway.

Ebola virus (EBOV), a member of the filovirus family, is an enveloped negative-sense RNA virus that causes lethal infections in humans and primates. Thousands of people have died from the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa, and no specific antiviral medication and treatment have been approved for EVD. Although the development of an EBOV vaccine is promising, immunity to any vaccine is not immediate. Here, we computationally analysed the structure of EBOV glycoprotein GP2 (GP2EBOV) and designed RNA aptamers that recognize and inhibit it. The aptamers specifically bind to conserved arginine residues (Arg587 and Arg596) located in the C-terminal coiled-coil region of GP2EBOV. Molecular docking of the synthetic RNA aptamers with the ectodomain of GP2EBOV revealed that the optimized orthogonal RNA aptamers have strong binding affinities with the coiled-coil region of GP2EBOV. The characterized RNA aptamers may facilitate strategies to block replication of EBOV and related Filoviruses, and thus may serve as important antivirals to reduce mortality associated with these infections.

Chlorination has been intensively investigated for use in water disinfection and pollutant elimination due to its efficacy and convenience; however, the generation and transportation of chlorine and hypochlorite are energy-consuming and complicated. In this study, a novel binary photosensitizer consisting of anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQ2S) and graphene was synthesized via a π-π stack adsorption method; this compound could allow for the chlorination of organic pollutants using on-site chlorine generation. In this photosensitive degradation process, sulfapyridine (SPY) was selected as a model pollutant and was decomposed by the reactive species (Cl2•-, Cl• and O2•-) generated during the photosensitive oxidation of chloride. The synthesized AQ2S/graphene exhibited superior activity, and the degradation rate of SPY was over 90 % after 12 h of visible light irradiation with a kinetic constant of 0.2034h−1. Results show that 20 mg AQ2S/GR at a 21 % weight percentage of AQ2S in a pH 7 SPY solution with 1 mol/L Cl− achieved the highest kinetics rate at 0.353 h−1. Free radical trapping experiments demonstrated that Cl2•- and O2•- were the dominant species involved in SPY decomposition under solar light. The reusability and stability of this composite were verified by conducting a cycle experiment over five successive runs. The capacity of photodegradation still remained over 90 % after these 5 runs. The current study provides an energy-efficient and simple-operational approach for water phase SPY control.

Cigarette smoking-related lung injury is one of the most common and fatal etiologies of many respiratory diseases, for which no effective interventions are available. Astragaloside Ⅳ (ASⅣ) is an active component extracted from Astragalus membranaceus. It is prescribed as a treatment for upper respiratory tract infections. Here, we report the potential anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of ASⅣ on cigarette smoking extract- (CSE)-exposed RAW264.7 cells. Murine macrophages were exposed to CSE, followed by administration of ASⅣ at 25–100 μg/mL for 24 h. ASⅣ significantly rescued CSE-induced cell death by inhibition of release pro-inflammatory cytokines. We measured autophagy as an intracellular scavenger by analyzing autophagic flux using tandem mRFP-GFP-LC3 fluorescence microscopy. Following administration with ASⅣ in CSE-exposed RAW264.7 cells, there was a notable increase in autophagosomes and a range of autophagic vacuoles were generated, as seen with transmission electron microscopy. Loss of autophagy following transfection siRNA aggravated inflammatory injury and release of inflammatory cytokines. Mechanistically, ASⅣ-triggered autophagy is mediated by the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway to reduce inflammation. Taken together, our findings suggest that ASⅣ acts stimulates autophagy, and that ASⅣ induces autophagy by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, contributing to alleviation of inflammation.

Summary: Prior studies of the renal cell carcinoma (RCC) germline landscape investigated predominantly patients of European ancestry. We examine the frequency of germline pathogenic and likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants in 1,829 patients with RCC from various ancestries. Overall, P/LP variants are found in 17% of patients, among whom 10.3% harbor one or more clinically actionable variants with potential preventive or therapeutic utility. Patients of African ancestry with RCC harbor significantly more P/LP variants in FH compared to patients of non-African ancestry with RCC and African controls from the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD). Patients of non-African ancestry have significantly more P/LP variants in CHEK2 compared to patients of African ancestry with RCC and non-Finnish Europeans controls. Non-Africans with RCC have more actionable variants compared to Africans with RCC. This work helps understand the underlying biological differences in RCC between Africans and non-Africans and paves the way to more comprehensive genomic characterization of underrepresented populations.

Apple occupies a dominant position in fruit production globally, and has become the main income source of local smallholder farmers in Luochuan County in the Loess Plateau area, one of the largest apple production areas in China. However, the annual productivity of apple orchards in this region remains low and has gradually declined over the years. The distinction and correlation of production constraints can contribute to the promotion of apple orchard productivity and the development of a sustainable orchard system. In the present study, survey data from 71 smallholder farmers were analyzed using a yield gap model to distinguish the production constraints and determine their correlation with the yield gap based on the structural equation model (SEM). The results indicated that the average apple yield in Luochuan County was 29.9 t ha−1 yr−1, while the attainable yield (Yatt; the highest yield obtained from the on-farm surveys) was 58.1 t ha−1 yr−1. The average explained and unexplainable yield gaps were 26.3 and 1.87 t ha−1 yr−1. According to the boundary line analysis, crop load, number of sprayings and base fertilizer N were the top three constraints on apple production in 9.8, 7.8 and 7.8% of the plots, respectively. Among the production constraints, crop load and fruit weight affected apple yield through direct pathways, whereas other constraints influenced apple yield through an indirect pathway based on the SEM, explaining 51% of the yield variance by all the main production constraints. These results can improve the current understanding of production constraints and contribute to the development of management strategies and policies for improving apple yield.

Natural products account for more than 50% of all small-molecule pharmaceutical agents currently in clinical use. However, low availability often becomes problematic when a bioactive natural product is promising to become a pharmaceutical or leading compound. Advances in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering provide a feasible solution for sustainable supply of these compounds. In this review, we have summarized current progress in engineering yeast cell factories for production of natural products, including terpenoids, alkaloids, and phenylpropanoids. We then discuss advanced strategies in metabolic engineering at three different dimensions, including point, line, and plane (corresponding to the individual enzymes and cofactors, metabolic pathways, and the global cellular network). In particular, we comprehensively discuss how to engineer cofactor biosynthesis for enhancing the biosynthesis efficiency, other than the enzyme activity. Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a crippling disease characterized by progressive dyspnea and associated with a high mortality rate, but its origin is unknown and there is no effective treatment. Yifei Sanjie formula (YFSJF) is a Chinese medicine that is widely used for treatment of respiratory systems disease. However, the molecular basis for the function of YFSJF has not been determined. Here we investigate the contribution of YFSJF in BLM-induced PF mice. Administration with YFSJF significantly alleviated the degree of BLM-induced collagen I and III deposition and the inflammatory injuring in the lungs and suppressed hydroxyproline release in PF animals. The active components of YFSJF are comprised with flavonoid, amino acids, saponins, oligosaccharide, organic acid, vitamin, esters, purine nucleosides. Additionally, there was a significant increase in autophagosomes, after treatment with YFSJF in PF animals. Interestingly, autophagy dysfunction by the blocker chloroquine (CQ) resulted in collagen deposition and inducing the expression of fibrosis-related genes. In addition, YFSJF-induced autophagy is mediated by the PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway, and knockdown of PI3K by siRNA up-regulated the expression of autophagy-related genes and down-regulated the expression of collagen in human lung fibroblasts (HLF). Our findings provide a detailed understanding that YFSJF-antifibrotic effects are mainly mediated by triggering autophagy, and suppressing phosphorylation of the PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway is required for YFSJF-curative effect.

Three thermal analytical techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) using five heating rates, and DSC-Fourier Transform Infrared (DSC-FTIR) microspectroscopy using one heating rate, were used to determine the thermal characteristics and the dehydration process of aspartame (APM) hemihydrate in the solid state. The intramolecular cyclization process of APM anhydrate was also examined. One exothermic and four endothermic peaks were observed in the DSC thermogram of APM hemihydrate, in which the exothermic peak was due to the crystallization of some amorphous APM caused by dehydration process from hemihydrate to anhydride. While four endothermic peaks were corresponded to the evaporation of absorbed water, the dehydration of hemihydrate, the diketopiperazines (DKP) formation via intramolecular cyclization, and the melting of DKP, respectively. The weight loss measured in TGA curve of APM hemihydrate was associated with these endothermic peaks in the DSC thermogram. According to the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) model, the activation energy of dehydration process within 100–150 °C was about 218 ± 11 kJ/mol determined by TGA technique. Both the dehydration and DKP formation processes for solid-state APM hemihydrate were markedly evidenced from the thermal-responsive changes in several specific FTIR bands by a single-step DSC-FTIR microspectroscopy. The glial cell line–derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family of ligands (GFLs) comprising of GDNF, neurturin, artemin, and persephin plays an important role in the development and maintenance of the central and peripheral nervous system, renal morphogenesis, and spermatogenesis. Here we review our current understanding of GFL biology, and supported by recent progress in the area, we examine their emerging role in endocrine-related and other non–hormone-dependent solid neoplasms. The ability of GFLs to elicit actions that resemble those perturbed in an oncogenic phenotype, alongside mounting evidence of GFL involvement in tumor progression, presents novel opportunities for therapeutic intervention.

The identification of pathological atrophy in MRI scans requires specialized training, which is scarce outside dedicated centers. We sought to investigate the clinical usefulness of computer-generated representations of local grey matter (GM) loss or increased volume of cerebral fluids (CSF) as normalized deviations (z-scores) from healthy aging to either aid human visual readings or directly detect pathological atrophy.Two experienced neuroradiologists rated atrophy in 30 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), 30 patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), 30 with dementia due to Lewy-body disease (LBD) and 30 healthy controls (HC) on a three-point scale in 10 anatomical regions as reference gold standard. Seven raters, varying in their experience with MRI diagnostics rated all cases on the same scale once with and once without computer-generated volume deviation maps that were overlaid on anatomical slices. In addition, we investigated the predictive value of the computer generated deviation maps on their own for the detection of atrophy as identified by the gold standard raters.Inter and intra-rater agreements of the two gold standard raters were substantial (Cohen's kappa κ > 0.62). This study investigated the geochemical features of the lower Paleozoic strata of Yaerdang Mountain outcrop along with the core samples from well TD2∈ in the eastern Tarim Basin, NW China. The total organic carbon abundance, hydrocarbon-generating precursor biospecies, and stable isotope ratios of organics and carbonate (δ13Cker, δ13Ccarb and δ18Ocarb) were comprehensively studied for their possible correlative constraints during sedimentary evolution. The results revealed that the δ13Cker (VPDB) of Cambrian kerogens along the outcrop section varied from −34.6‰ to −28.4‰, indicating an increasing tendency from the lower Cambrian to the upper Cambrian. This was on the whole accompanied by the variation in the δ13Ccarb and δ18Ocarb along the profile, which might be associated with the changes in the sea level and also in the compositional variation of benthic and planktonic biomass. The large variation in the stable carbon isotope ratios up to 6‰ along the outcrop section reflected the heterogeneity of the Cambrian source rocks from the eastern Tarim Basin. Hence, the 13C-enriched crude oils from well TD2∈ might have been derived from a localized stratum of Cambrian source rocks. The results from this study showed the possibility of multiple source kitchens in the Cambrian–lower Ordovician portion of Tarim Basin.

Herbicidal residues of imazamox are hazardous to some sensitive rotational aftercrops. The aim of the study was to isolate and identify a microbial strain capable of degrading imazamox. The strain IB5, capable of efficiently degrading imazamox, was isolated from an imazamox-contaminated soybean field in Heilongjiang Province, China. It was found to degrade 98.61% of 400 mg L−1 imazamox within 48 h by high-performance liquid chromatograph. Through morphological, physiological and biochemical characterization, and the 16S rDNA sequencing, the strain was identified as Acinetobacter baumannii. An optimal degradation condition was obtained and verified: 400 mg L−1 imazamox, 0.1% (volume ratio) initial inoculum, 37°C and pH 7.0. Four main products were captured in the liquid chromatograms and mass spectra, and a pathway for imazamox degradation by IB5 was proposed. This work provides a new suitable candidate for imazamox biodegradation and theoretical evidence for imazamox residue bioremediation. A. baumannii is a common clinical bacteria, but its imazamox-degrading feature has not been reported previously.

The effect of Povacoat on the solid state characteristics and polymorphic transformation of γ-form of indomethacin (γ-IMC) after solvent co-evaporation via two drying methods was investigated by thermoanalytical and FTIR spectroscopic studies. The types of solvents (water, ethanol, and water:ethanol (1:9 ~ 2:8, v/v)), weight ratios of Povacoat:IMC (4:1 ~ 4:10, w/w), and drying methods (air-drying and microwave-drying) were selected as variables in this study. A physical mixture of Povacoat and γ-IMC was also carried out by neat grinding process. Cropland productivity has been significantly impacted by soil acidification resulted from nitrogen (N) fertilization, especially as a result of excess ammoniacal N input. With decades' intensive agricultural cultivation and heavy chemical N input in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, the impact extent of induced proton input on soil pH in the long term was not yet clear. In this study, acidification rates of different soil layers in the soil profile (0–120 cm) were calculated by pH buffer capacity (pHBC) and net input of protons due to chemical N incorporation. Topsoil (0–20 cm) pH changes of a long-term fertilization field (from 1989) were determined to validate the predicted values. The results showed that the acid and alkali buffer capacities varied significantly in the soil profile, averaged 692 and 39.8 mmolc kg−1 pH−1, respectively. A significant (P
