Objectives: To describe the historical evolution and dissemination of the Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology international societies and associations across the globe, and to provide insights into their significant contributions toward oral health promotion., Study Design: This review was conducted in accordance with the JBI Scoping Review Methodology Group guidance. The reporting followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR)., Results: Search strategy was applied to 5 databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS)) and grey literature (Google Scholar, Open Grey and ProQuest), as well as additional sources, such as organization websites. Eighty-nine sources were included in this review. Forty-six professional associations/societies were identified, of which 39 represented a country or geopolitical region, 2 represented continents, 2 represented multinational organizations and 3 multinational study groups., Conclusions: Documentation of the historical establishment and development of Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology organizations worldwide is limited and describing these processes remains challenging. Analysis of global data reveals heterogeneous development and distribution, resulting in disparities in accessibility and standardization. Background: Detecting airway inflammation non-invasively in infants with cystic fibrosis (CF) is difficult. We hypothesized that markers of inflammation in CF [IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-17A, neutrophil elastase (NE) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α)] could be measured in infants with CF from nasal fluid and would be elevated during viral infections or clinician-defined pulmonary exacerbations (PEx)., Methods: We collected nasal fluid, nasal swabs, and hair samples from 34 infants with CF during monthly clinic visits, sick visits, and hospitalizations. Nasal fluid was isolated and analyzed for cytokines. Respiratory viral detection on nasal swabs was performed using the Luminex NxTAG® Respiratory Pathogen Panel. Hair samples were analyzed for nicotine concentration by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. We compared nasal cytokine concentrations between the presence and absence of detected respiratory viruses, PEx, and smoke exposure., Results: A total of 246 samples were analyzed. Compared to measurements in the absence of respiratory viruses, mean concentrations of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and NE were significantly increased while IL-17A was significantly decreased in infants positive for respiratory viruses. IL-17A was significantly decreased and NE increased in those with a PEx. IL-8 and NE were significantly increased in infants with enteric pathogen positivity on airway cultures, but not P. aeruginosa or S. aureus. Compared to those with no smoke exposure, there were significantly higher levels of IL-6, IL-10, and NE in infants with detectable levels of nicotine., Conclusions: Noninvasive collection of nasal fluid may identify inflammation in infants with CF during changing clinical or environmental exposures., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors have no declarations of interest., (Copyright © 2023 European Cystic Fibrosis Society. Background: Mental health screening in accordance with consensus guidelines became routine clinical practice in our cystic fibrosis (CF) Center in 2015. We hypothesized improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms over time and associations between elevated screening scores and disease severity. We aimed to observe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and modulator use on mental health symptoms., Methods: Retrospective chart reviews were conducted for people 12 years and older with at least one Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) or Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) screening for six years. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize demographic variables and logistic regression and linear mixed models were used to evaluate the relationship between screening scores and clinical variables., Results: Analyses included 150 participants (ages 12-22 years). The percentage of minimal to no symptom scores increased over time for anxiety and depression. Increased mental health visits and CFRD were associated with higher PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores. Higher FEV1pp was associated with lower GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores. More effective modulator use was associated with lower PHQ-9 scores. Mean PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores were not significantly different when comparing pre-pandemic and pandemic scores., Conclusion: Disruptions in screening during the pandemic were minimal and symptom scores remained stable. Individuals with higher mental health screening scores were more likely to have CFRD and utilization of mental health services. Objective: The present study aims to quantify clinicians' perceptions of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) when evaluating, classifying, and manually annotating clinical images, as well as to understand the source of inter-observer variability when assessing these lesions. The hypothesis was that different interpretations could affect the quality of the annotations used to train a Supervised Learning model., Study Design: Forty-six clinical images from 37 patients were reviewed, classified, and manually annotated at the pixel level by 3 labelers. We compared the inter-examiner assessment based on clinical criteria through the κ statistics (Fleiss's kappa). The segmentations were also compared using the mean pixel-wise intersection over union (IoU)., Results: The inter-observer agreement for homogeneous/non-homogeneous criteria was substantial (κ = 63, 95% CI: 0.47-0.80). For the subclassification of non-homogeneous lesions, the inter-observer agreement was moderate (κ = 43, 95% CI: 0.34-0.53) (P < .001). The mean IoU of 0.53 (±0.22) was considered low., Conclusion: The subjective clinical assessment (based on human visual observation, variable criteria that have suffered adjustments over the years, different educational backgrounds, and personal experience) may explain the source of inter-observer discordance for the classification and annotation of OPMD. Therefore, there is a strong probability of transferring the subjectivity of human analysis to artificial intelligence models. Introduction: The aim of the present systematic review (SR) is to summarize Machine Learning (ML) models currently used to predict head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment-related toxicities, and to understand the impact of image biomarkers (IBMs) in prediction models (PMs). The present SR was conducted following the guidelines of the PRISMA 2022 and registered in PROSPERO database (CRD42020219304)., Methods: The acronym PICOS was used to develop the focused review question (Can PMs accurately predict HNC treatment toxicities?) and the eligibility criteria. The inclusion criteria enrolled Prediction Model Studies (PMSs) with patient cohorts that were treated for HNC and developed toxicities. Electronic database search encompassed PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, LILACS, and Gray Literature (Google Scholar and ProQuest). Risk of Bias (RoB) was assessed through PROBAST and the results were synthesized based on the data format (with and without IBMs) to allow comparison., Results: A total of 28 studies and 4,713 patients were included. Xerostomia was the most frequently investigated toxicity (17; 60.71 %). Sixteen (57.14 %) studies reported using radiomics features in combination with clinical or dosimetrics/dosiomics for modelling. High RoB was identified in 23 studies. Meta-analysis (MA) showed an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC) of 0.82 for models with IBMs and 0.81 for models without IBMs (p value < 0.001), demonstrating no difference among IBM- and non-IBM-based models., Discussion: The development of a PM based on sample-specific features represents patient selection bias and may affect a model's performance. Heterogeneity of the studies as well as non-standardized metrics prevent proper comparison of studies, and the absence of an independent/external test does not allow the evaluation of the model's generalization ability., Conclusion: IBM-featured PMs are not superior to PMs based on non-IBM predictors. Objective: To determine the presence or absence of SARS-CoV-2 in the cerebrospinal fluid of pregnant women at early stages of COVID-19., Materials and Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study with pregnant women undergoing cesarean section and real-time polymerase chain reaction to SARS-CoV-2 was performed in the cerebrospinal fluid in the early stages of COVID-19., Results: Fourteen pregnant women, whose COVID-19 symptoms started between four to 18 days prior to delivery, were included. Eleven of the women reported anosmia, dysgeusia, and headaches and there were two fatal cases. SARS-Cov-2 was not present in the cerebrospinal fluid of these COVID-19 patients with early neurological symptoms, even in severe cases., Conclusion: Our study suggests that peripheric cell damage and parainfectious phenomena may predominate over direct central nervous system injury in the pathophysiology of COVID-19 related early neurological symptoms on pregnant women., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors have no conflicts of interest relevant to this article., (Copyright © 2022.
