The blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 is an invasive species in the Mediterranean, with a remarkable ability to adapt to various habitats, and thereby having significant impacts on biodiversity and artisanal fishing activities. Currently, fishing is a measure being considered to control blue crab populations in invaded sites. However, it is necessary to understand the temporal structure of blue crab populations (e.g., growth, reproduction, sexual maturity) to determine specific periods when control measures need to be implemented. Considering the species' ability to adapt to various habitats, it is crucial to evaluate how temperature and salinity influence population structure. In this study, we present fishers-dependent monitoring on the temporal population structure of blue crabs in two lagoons in Corsica (France) over 12 months. Through this approach, we provide new information that can assist in decision-making for the implementation of control measures. Even though these two lagoons are geographically close, blue crab populations showed differences, particularly in terms of sexual maturity. Specimens from Biguglia mature later (males: 16.16 cm; females: 16.79 cm) than those in the Palo Lagoon (males: 14.38 cm; females: 13.86 cm). Seasonal size distribution also showed differences between the lagoons and within the same lagoon between males and females. Temperature and salinity had a significant effect on the monthly relationship between carapace width and wet weight (referred to here as growth rate) for males and females and between the lagoons. In the Biguglia Lagoon, the higher the temperature, the greater the growth rate over a wide salinity window (16–30 psu); for females, the environmental window was restricted (temperature: 20–30°C; salinities > 16 psu). The dynamics differed in the Palo Lagoon, with a more restricted high growth rate window for males, and females showed a much wider window, with high growth rates over the entire temperature and salinity range. By employing blue crab’s populations monitoring along with environmental parameters, we were able to determine how the environment influenced the blue crab’s population structure, thus identifying periods conducive to species control. The most effective strategy would undoubtedly be to eliminate females before their period of sexual maturity and copulation ensue. In our case, this would involve intensive control in summer for Biguglia and in spring for Palo. These recommendations have been translated into operations to be implemented as part of the ''Territorial Plan for Combating the Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) in Corsica (2024–2027)''.

The size and composition of particulate matter (PM) are pivotal in determining its adverse health effects. It is important to understand PM's retention by plants to facilitate its atmospheric removal. However, the distinctions between the size and composition of naturally fallen PM (NFPM) and leaf-deposited PM (LDPM) are not well-documented. Here we utilize a single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer, coupled with a PM resuspension chamber, to analyze these differences. We find that LDPM particles are 6.8–97.3% larger than NFPM. Employing a neural network algorithm based on adaptive resonance theory, we have identified distinct compositional profiles: NFPM predominantly consists of organic carbon (OC; 31.2%) and potassium-rich components (19.1%), whereas LDPM are largely composed of crustal species (53.9–60.6%). Interestingly, coniferous species retain higher OC content (11.5–13.7%) compared to broad-leaved species (0.5–1.2%), while the levoglucosan content exhibit an opposite trend. Our study highlights the active role of tree leaves in modifying PM composition beyond mere passive capture, advocating for a strategic approach to species selection in urban greening initiatives to enhance PM mitigation. These insights provide guidance for urban planners and environmentalists in implementing nature-based solutions to improve urban air quality.

Aerosol size distributions near biomass-burning sources undergo rapid evolution, primarily due to coagulation, which significantly alters the particle number size distribution. Existing long-range aerosol transport and climate prediction models often overlook near-source dynamics involving simultaneous coagulation and dispersion. To bridge this gap, the present study introduces a coagulation-dispersion model and provides semi-analytical solutions for the effective size distribution parameters. The precise solution for a diffusion-less coagulating plume with spatially varying particle concentration supports the conceptual accuracy of the semi-analytical parameterization for dispersion-coagulation model. These solutions form the basis for a parameterization scheme that considers input parameters such as source dimensions, particle mass flux, particle size, and atmospheric conditions. Utilizing this parameterization for case-specific biomass burning emissions shows a decrease in number emission rate by approximately a factor of 600, while the count median diameter of the initial size distribution increases by around 7 times. Additionally, we estimate the optical properties of aerosols both before and after the introduction of the near-source parameterization scheme. Results indicate an increase by a factor of 4 in the aerosol extinction coefficient and by a factor of ∼20 in the scattering coefficient, which will significantly influence the calculation of aerosol optical properties in global models. These changes in optical properties primarily stem from modifications in aerosol size distribution resulting from near-source aerosol dynamics. The results are further discussed.

The formation of the secondary phases in the 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) influences greatly its mechanical properties. Studies on the microstructural evolution and coarsening behavior of the precipitates in the 2205 DSS have both scientific and technological significance. In the present work, the evolution of the composition and morphology of the precipitates in the 2205 DSS aged at 850 °C for periods up to 200 h are systematically investigated by SEM/EDS (Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy Dispersive Spectrometer) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope). In addition, the size statistics for intermetallic precipitates, especially for the σ phase, are carried out based on the SEM images by using deep learning and digital image processing technique. Based on the above, the average interphase energy between the σ and γ phases is reasonably estimated according to the Ostwald coarsening mechanism. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the microstructural evolution and coarsening behavior of the precipitates in 2205 DSS.

Land-use types dramatically affect the source, composition, behavior and fate of headstream chemical species. However, the influence of land-use types on the size-dependent composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and dissolved inorganic matter (DIM) is still unclear. Here, we evaluated the size-dependent concentration, composition and relationship of chemical species from 9 coastal headstreams (i.e. forested, agricultural and wetland headstreams) using multiple spectroscopic techniques including absorbance, excitation-emission matrix, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and synchrotron-based micro-X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF). Results showed that 68.57%-85.78% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with abundant humic/fulvic-like substances were distributed in the 1 kDa fractions and terrestrial fulvic/humic-like substances from land to stream. Forested streams showed high DOC in the 1 kDa-0.2 μm fraction, predominance of autochthonous DOM rich in amides, amines, carboxyl and O-alkyl groups, and abundance whitlockite and ferromanganese oxides. Wetland streams were characterized by abundant halite, sylvite, and microbially-transformed humic-like DOM rich in aromatic and phenolic groups. Morphology and correlation analysis implied DIM was closely combined with fluorescent DOM (FDOM) and colored DOM (CDOM), resulting in more irregular organo-inorganic complexes in forested and agricultural streams, and more halite and sylvite crystal blocks encapsulating by smooth and close organic–inorganic complexes in wetland streams. Redundancy analysis (RDA) analysis suggested that land-use types (17.20%) and molecular weight (14.29%) were the prominent factors impacting the composition and relationship of DOM and DIM. Land-use types altered the sources and transport patterns of chemical species in headstreams, influencing their size-dependent compositions and associated biogeochemical processes. Such information is imperative for monitoring and developing land-use policies in coastal regions undergoing intense anthropogenic alterations.

The increasing demand for higher steel inclusion cleanliness has motivated control over the formation and evolution of inclusions during the production process. To generate knowledge of the formation and evolution of inclusions during the production of Al-killed steel slabs, the evolution of the chemical composition and size distribution of inclusions throughout the process, including ladle furnace (LF) treatment and continuous casting (CC), was studied. Liquid steel sampling was conducted throughout the process. The chemical composition was measured using the EDS technique, and the size distribution analysis was performed with the population density function (PDF) approach. The upper tail of the size distributions was analyzed by generalized extreme value (GEV) theory. Evolution of the chemical composition of inclusions involved the following path: solid Al2O3 solid Al2O3-MgO partly liquid Al2O3–MgO–CaO fully liquid Al2O3–MgO–CaO. The PDF analysis accounted for the evolution of the size distribution, which was supposed to be driven by the balance of the coalescence/growth and collision/breakage of inclusions and their removal. Finally, the GEV approach allowed us to describe the evolution of large inclusions and compare inclusion populations in terms of survival probability.

To improve the performance of aluminized propellants, it is important to study the mechanism of agglomeration and approve the methods of inhibiting agglomeration. In this study, organic fluoride was added to the propellants and the dynamic combustion process of the propellants was obtained through visual combustion test system. At the same time, an algorithm which can detect the size of particles out of focus more accurately is also proposed. Then, the agglomeration behaviors, as well as the size distribution of initial condensed products and final condensed products, during the combustion of propellants are discussed. The influence of organic fluoride additive on the evolution of condensed products and the distribution of their sizes were also analyzed. The results show that the condensed products had a coral structure, and underwent the stages of exposure, accumulation, splicing, separation, and combustion to evolve into oxidation cap structures. When organic fluoride is added, special flocculent products were formed instead of coral-like products and the AlF3 was found in the condensed products. Besides, detailed behaviors of condensed products have been found in the gas. The products with an oxidation cap still subsequently interacted with one another in the gas, including through re-fusion and re-separation. The distribution of the initial products was relatively concentrated and stable while that of the final products exhibited a prominent trend of increasing first, then decreasing, and gradually stabilizing. Besides, with the addition of organic fluoride, the main combustion products were converted α - Al2O3 and θ - Al2O3 to γ - Al2O3 and δ - Al2O3, indicating that the addition of organic fluoride significantly improved the performance of the aluminized propellants in terms of suppressing the size of the condensed products.

Ingested Microplastic (MP) particles can harm the human body. Estimations of the total mass of ingested MP particles correspond to 50 plastic bags per year (Bai et al., 2022), one credit card per week (Gruber et al., 2022), or a median value of 4.1▒μg/week for adults (Mohamed Nor et al., 2021). The first two estimations are based on an analysis (Senathirajah et al., 2021) that predicts a total ingested mass of MP particles mi,MP of 0.1–5▒g/week. This work revisits and evaluates this calculation and compares its results and methods to Mohamed Nor et al. (2021). Senathirajah combines data of averaged MP particle masses m¯MP from papers that reported MP particle sizes and MP particle counts nMP in shellfish, salt, beer, and water based on other papers that detected MP particles. Combined with the estimated weekly consumption of those consumables, they compute mi,MP. This work raises some serious issues of Senathirajah in the way they combine data and they obtained particle sizes. It concludes that Senathirajah overestimates mi,MP by several orders of magnitude and that mi,MP can be considered as a rather irrelevant factor for the toxic effects of MP particles on the human body.

Biomass burning (BB) is the largest contributor to carbonaceous aerosols globally. Specific organic tracers can track BB particles and identify BB types. At present, there is limited information on the composition of BB tracers on a continental scale. In this study, we conducted year-round sampling of particulate matter (PM) at 12 sites in China. Nine BB tracers were measured in PM with aerodynamic diameters <1.1 μm (PM <1.1 ), in the range of 1.1-3.3 μm (PM 1.1 - 3.3 ), and > 3.3 μm (PM >3.3 ). The annual average concentration of these nine BB tracers (∑ 9 BB tracers) in the total PM was 366 ng m -3 with the majority of levoglucosan (66 %). The concentration of ∑ 9 BB tracers was higher in northern China than in southern China, especially in winter. ∑ 9 BB tracers were most enriched in PM <1.1 (50-61 % in mass), followed by PM 1.1 - 3.3 and PM >3.3 . The highest concentrations of ∑ 9 BB tracers were observed in winter, while satellite-recorded fire spots were intensive in autumn and spring. The mismatch of seasonal trends between them indicated that the high levels of BB tracers in winter was not due to open BB. The composition of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, syringic acid and vanillic acid suggested that the burning of crop residues and softwoods were the major BB types in China. The ratio of levoglucosan to mannosan could neither identify the major BB types in China nor distinguish between BB and coal combustion. Correlation analysis and the PMF model demonstrated that non-BB sources contributed 7 %-58 % to levoglucosan at the 12 sites, with coal combustion being the predominant non-BB source in China, especially in northern urban sites during winter. Aromatic acids are an integral component of organic acids in the atmosphere, contributing to the formation of climate-altering brown carbon (BrC). To better understand the sources and formation processes of aromatic acids, we collected size-segregated particulate matter samples in urban Beijing from April 2017 to January 2018, which were analyzed using solvent-extraction followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Phthalic acid (o-PhA) had the greatest average annual concentration, followed by terephthalic acid (p-PhA), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-OHBA), dehydroabietic acid (DA), syringic acid (SA), 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (3-OHBA), isophthalic acid (m-PhA), and vanillic acid (VA). We identified distinct seasonal variations in aromatic acids, with o-PhA peaking in summer due to photochemical activity, while p-PhA and 4-OHBA elevated in autumn and summer, respectively, influenced by open waste and biomass burning. Wintertime variations in all aromatic acids were driven by complex meteorology and increased anthropogenic emissions, including rural biomass burning for cooking and heating. Particle size distribution of aromatic acids was affected by seasonal agricultural activities and dust storms, multiple emission sources, and formation mechanisms. The o-PhA has predominantly bimodal distribution, with diverse sources and complex formation mechanisms including gas- and aqueous-phase chemistry. The applicability of o-PhA as a tracer for specific secondary organic aerosols has been questioned due to its potential primary sources. The 3-OHBA, 4-OHBA, VA, SA, and DA exhibited bimodal or trimodal patterns during haze and non-haze periods across different particle size ranges. Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are intricate industrial compounds synthesized through alkane chlorination. Researches on the size distribution of short-chain (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) are limited. Here, we conducted a thorough investigation on the size-dependent distribution characteristics, deposition behavior in respiratory tract, and health risks associated with CPs in atmospheric PM. The concentration of SCCPs in atmospheric particulate matter (PM 10 ) was much higher than MCCPs, with concentration ranges of 2.53-31.8 and 1.07-4.62 ng m -3 , respectively. Concentrations of CPs increase with decreasing PM size, peaking at aerodynamic diameters (Dp) < 0.49 μm. Physicochemical properties influence the distribution of CP homologs in PM. Those with lower vapor pressure, higher octanol-air and octanol-water partition coefficients tended to accumulate in PM with larger geometric mean diameters. Most of the inhaled CPs in PM deposited in the upper airways, with a small amount in the trachea and alveolar regions. The estimated daily intakes values were highest when Dp < 0.49 μm. Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are chlorinated alkane mixtures widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in multiple industrial products. Systematic research on how homolog-specific properties affect their atmospheric behaviors is limited. Herein, we investigated the levels of short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) in long-timescale, seasonal, and size-fractioned particles in the urban area of Dalian, a coastal city in northern China. The average SCCP and MCCP concentrations in particles with diameters ≤ 10 µm were 3.36 and 4.89 ng/m 3 , respectively, and a general increase in the SCCP concentration was observed from 2.59 ng/m 3 in 2018 - 2019 to 7.84 ng/m 3 in 2021 - 2023. CP levels and patterns showed significant seasonal variation, with a higher abundance of C 11-13 Cl 7-9 in winter and C 10-12 Cl 5 in summer. Elevated particle levels in winter and high temperatures in summer contributed to the seasonal variations. SCCPs and MCCPs were concentrated on particles with diameters of < 1 µm and their geometric mean diameter increased with the increasing carbon and chlorine numbers. Total Daily intake of SCCP and MCCP was calculated to be 0.15 and 0.22 ng/kg bw/day for adults. 53.1 %, 8.5 %, and 38.4 % of inhaled SCCPs, and 60.6 %, 7.6 %, and 31.8 % of inhaled MCCPs deposited into the head airway, tracheobronchial region, and alveolar region, respectively. Image-based surveys of the marine benthos are being increasingly adopted as a monitoring tool for habitats and biota, particularly in mesophotic depths (∼30–150 m) which are technically difficult to survey. Many modern tools for these surveys, such as remotely operated vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles, can capture thousands of images in a single deployment. Turning this into quantitative data typically involves human annotation which is often time-consuming and costly. Percent cover of organisms is one of the most common metrics for monitoring changes in abundance, which may be attained through visual estimation, digitization, or point-count approaches. However, alternative metrics of abundance such as density (direct counts) or presence-absence, as well as metrics that quantify condition (e.g., bleaching) and size-structure can also provide quantitative information for tracking change. Understanding the statistical power of different approaches is critical to designing effective image-based monitoring programs. Given the differing statistical power and time taken using different approaches, program managers need to decide where to allocate resources. Here we use benthic imagery from two long-term monitoring sites in south-eastern Australia to annotate three example morphospecies (morphologically distinct organisms) using three approaches: point-count (percent cover), full count and presence-absence within imagery. Also, we compare the performance of the point count and full count approaches for monitoring bleaching in one of our morphospecies. We use spatio-temporal models to quantify trends in the empirical data and simulations to quantify the power of these approaches to detect different levels of temporal change using different sampling efforts (either 100 or 200 images). Additionally, we examine the additional insights that size-structure information can provide for two morphospecies. We find that the full count approach provides a higher statistical power to detect change than the other approaches for our example morphospecies, including tracking bleaching status. Size-structure information can provide additional insights such as the occurrence of recruitment or mortality events or growth of individuals. We recommend that monitoring programs using benthic imagery should consider the choice of annotation approach as this is likely to impact observed temporal patterns, particularly when the focus is specific indicator species rather than total biodiversity.

Submicron particle extinction significantly contributed to reduced horizontal visibility during severe pollution episodes. However, seasonal variations in the scattering coefficients of chemical components, particularly with their size and mass concentration, are still not fully understood. This study investigated the scattering coefficients of the main chemical components of submicron particles (PM 1 ) in Shanghai using advanced instruments. We discovered that the main scattering species exhibited seasonal variations. Notably, organics (OA) and ammonium sulfate ((NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ) dominated in spring, summer, and autumn, whereas ammonium nitrate (NH 4 NO 3 ) was the primary scattering species in winter. Analyzing the particle scattering coefficient size revealed that the scattering coefficients for OA in Shanghai exhibited bimodal distributions in spring, autumn, and winter, with peak sizes of 500-700 nm. The distribution was unimodal in summer, with a 400-500 nm peak size range. In addition, the peak particle size distributions of NH 4 NO 3 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 demonstrated a pattern of winter > spring/autumn > summer, potentially owing to the different species sources and formation pathways throughout the four seasons. Seasonal variations in the mass scattering efficiency (MSE) showed that OA exhibited a higher MSE than NH 4 NO 3 or (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . Further, NH 4 NO 3 exhibited a higher MSE in winter, whereas (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 exhibited the highest MSE in summer at 5.63. This study highlighted the importance of considering seasonal characteristics controlling scattered species and their precursors to enhance visibility. Bioaerosols have attracted increasing attention as novel contaminants because of their potential role in the spread of disease. In this study, sampling sites were established in a landfill in northwestern China with the aim of investigating the emission and diffusion characteristics of bioaerosols. The results revealed that the counts of airborne bacteria released by landfill cover area (LCA) and waste dumping area (WDA) located in the landfill area reached 18 193 ± 30 CFU/m 3 and 10 948 ± 105 CFU/m 3 , respectively. These two aeras were the main sources of bioaerosol generation. Meanwhile, Corynebacterium spp., Bacteroidetes spp., and Pseudomonas spp. were identified as potential pathogens. A Gaussian model was applied to simulate the diffusion of the bioaerosols; the influence distance was calculated as 12 km from the boundary of the landfill site. The potential health risks of bioaerosol exposure to on-site workers and nearby residents were calculated and evaluated in terms of aerosol concentration, particle size, and pathogenic bacteria. Data are presented demonstrating that absorbance detection can be used during high-speed sedimentation velocity analytical ultracentrifugation (hs-SV-AUC) experiments to characterize the size distribution of adeno-associated virus (AAV) drug products accurately. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study in an isolated zone of an underground mine to characterize aerosols generated by: (1) a diesel-powered personnel carrier vehicle operated over a simulated light-duty cycle and (2) the simulated repair of existing equipment using manual metal arc welding (MMAW). Both the diesel-powered vehicle and MMAW process contributed to concentrations of nano and ultrafine aerosols in the mine air. The welding process also contributed to aerosols with electrical mobility and aerodynamic mobility count median diameters of approximately 140 and 480 nm, respectively. The welding particles collected on the filters contained carbon, iron, manganese, calcium, and aluminum.

Fungal aerosols, which play significant roles in affecting human health and regional climate, are closely affected by rainfall. But knowledge about the influence of rainfall on fungal aerobiota in the urban atmosphere remains limited. Here, airborne total suspended particles and size-segregated particles were collected from urban Tianjin, China, to investigate such an impact by high-throughput gene sequencing. On non-rainy days, the genera Cladosporium (16.0%), Alternaria (7.9%) and Aspergillus (6.1%) dominated in fungal aerobiota. On rainy days, in addition to Cladosporium (11.1%) and Aspergillus (5.5%), the genus Schizophyllum which is apt to release spores under humid environment became more abundant (8.2%). Airborne fungi were mainly identified as plant endophytes on non-rainy days, while wood saprophytes dominated on rainy days. The resulting high speed (45K rpm) SV-AUC (hs-SV-AUC) protocol poses several experimental challenges: 1) the need for rapid data acquisition, 2) increased potential for optical artifacts from steep and fast moving boundaries and 3) the increased potential for convection. To overcome these challenges the protocol uses interference detection at low temperatures and data that are confined to a limited radial-time window. In addition to providing higher resolution AAV SV-AUC data and very short run times (<20 min after temperature equilibration), the need to match the sample and reference solvent composition and meniscus positions is relaxed making interference detection as simple to employ as absorbance detection. Finally, experimental data comparing hs-SV-AUC (at 45K rpm) with standard low-speed (15K rpm) SV-AUC on the same AAV sample demonstrate the size distribution resolution improvement. Size-segregated aerosols collected in Beijing from 2021 to 2022 were used to investigate the contribution of organic aerosols to the aerosol liquid water content (ALWC), the influencing factors of ALWC, and the concentrations and size distribution characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) after clean air actions. The results showed that the concentration of WSOC in particulate matter (PM) 1.8 was 3.52 ± 2.43 μg/m 3 during the sampling period. Obvious changes were observed in the size distribution of WSOC after clean air actions, which may be attributed to the enhancement of atmospheric oxidation capacity and the decrease in PM concentration. The contribution of organic aerosols to the ALWC in fine PM was 18.1 % during the sampling period, which was more significant at lower particles concentration and smaller particle size ranges. The ambient relative humidity (RH) and the ratio of NO 3 - /SO 4 2- had an apparent influence on ALWC. The continuous increase in the nitrate proportion significantly reduced the deliquescence point of the aerosols, making them prone to hygroscopic growth at lower RH. Analysis of the relation among nitrogen oxidation ratio (sulfur oxidation ratio), ALWC and PM 1.8 mass concentrations suggests that organic matter has a significant effect on the formation of secondary inorganic aerosols in the initial phase of pollution formation and plays a crucial role in aerosol pollution formation in Beijing. The sulfidation is considered as one of the most important environmental transformation processes of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which affects their transport, uptake and toxicity. Herein, based on the hollow fiber flow-field flow fractionation coupled with triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HF5-ICP-QQQ), we developed an efficient approach to accurately characterize the sulfidation process of AgNPs in aquatic solutions. HF5 could efficiently remove interferential ions and separate nanoparticles with different sizes online, and ICP-QQQ could accurately detect S element through monitoring 32 S 16 O + in mass shift mode. By the proposed method, two kinds of AgNPs, citrate-coated AgNPs and PVP-coated AgNPs, were selected as models to trace their transfer behaviors during the sulfidation. The results showed once AgNPs were exposed to Na 2 S solution, the overlapping fractograms of 32 S 16 O + and 107 Ag + were rapidly detected by HF5-ICP-QQQ to indicate the co-presence of Ag and S, and thus confirming the production of Ag 2 S and AgNPs underwent a rapid sulfidation process. There were substantial differences in the influence of the two coated agents on the stability of the particles under the conditions examined. In the presence of sulfide, PVP-coated AgNPs could maintain initial size distribution with higher stability, while the size distribution of citrate-coated AgNPs changed considerably. Comprehensive methodologies for monitoring microplastics (MPs) in the ocean are critical for accurately assessing abundances across a broad size spectrum, and to document distributions, sources, sinks, temporal trends, and exposure risks for organisms. Discrete 0.5-L water samples from the northeastern-coast of Venezuela (NECV), Pacific-Arctic Ocean (PAO), and Gulf Stream Current (GSC) were analyzed by Raman microspectroscopy to detect MPs not captured by net-tow surveys. Equivalent spherical diameters (ESD) of most MPs were <5 μm, accounting for 68, 83, 86 % of total inventories in NECV, GSC, PAO samples. We did not observe a single MP particle >53 μm ESD. Abundances of MPs in the 0.5-200 μm size fraction were 5-6 orders of magnitude higher than previous surveys that were almost exclusively based on net tow collections of MPs > 300 μm ESD. Abundances of MPs in NECV samples were ~10-fold higher than those from PAO and GSC. Manipulating droplet dynamics is of great importance in condensation heat transfer enhancement. Cavity topography was believed to be able to regulate droplet merging and self-removal via Laplace force imbalance by the cavity wall and the effect of spatial confinement and isolation. However, the size effect of the microcavity on the droplet dynamics behavior, droplet size distribution and condensation heat transfer performance are not sufficiently understood. In this paper, hierarchical microcavity-arrayed superhydrophobic surfaces with a nominal cavity diameter of 20, 35, 50 and 70 μm were fabricated. Condensation experiments were first carried out in the atmosphere under an optical microscope, and then in pure steam in a self-designed environmental chamber at 4000 Pa. Local dynamic behaviors and time-lapsed evolutions of droplets during condensation were observed. Droplet size distribution and jumping rate were statistically analyzed using ImageJ software. It was proved the smaller cavity size of 20 μm is beneficial to facilitate condensate droplet jumping and increase the density of small droplets. The surface coverage ratio on the microcavity-arrayed superhydrophobic surfaces was only half of that on the hydrophobic surface at steady state. Enhancement of pure steam condensation heat transfer can be realized by effectively regulating droplet dynamics using microcavity topographies at limited subcooling degrees.

Inertial cavitation (IC) of the preformed microbubbles is being investigated for ultrasound imaging and therapeutic applications. However, microbubbles rupture during IC, creating smaller daughter bubbles (DBs), which may cause undesired bioeffects in the target region. Thus, it is important to determine the properties of DBs to achieve controllable cavitation activity for applications. In this study, we theoretically calculated the dissolution dynamics of sulfur hexafluoride bubbles. Then, we applied a 1-MHz single tone burst with different peak negative pressures (PNPs) and pulse lengths (PLs), and multiple 5-MHz tone bursts with fixed acoustic conditions to elicit IC of the preformed SonoVue microbubbles and scattering of DBs, respectively. After the IC and scattering signals were received by a 7.5-MHz transducer, time- and frequency-domain analysis was performed to obtain the IC dose and scattering intensity curve. The theoretical dissolution curves and measured scattering intensity curves were combined to determine the effect of the incident pulse parameters on the lifetime, mean radius and distribution range of DBs. Increased PNP reduced the lifetime and mean size of the DBs population and narrowed the size distribution. The proportion of small DBs (less than resonance size) increased from 36.83% to 85.98% with an increase in the PNP from 0.6 to 1.6 MPa. Moreover, increased PL caused a shift of the DB population to the smaller bubbles with shorter lifetime and narrower distribution. The proportion of small bubbles increased from 25.74% to 95.08% as the PL was increased from 5 to 100 µs. Finally, increased IC dose caused a smaller mean size, shorter lifetime and narrower distribution in the DB population. These results provide new insight into the relationship between the incident acoustic parameters and the properties of DBs, and a feasible strategy for achieving controllable cavitation activity in applications.

In order to investigate the pollution characteristics of size-segregated particles and metal elements (MEs) after the Chinese Air Pollution Prevention Action Plan was released in 2013, an intensive field campaign was conducted in the suburban area of Chaoyang District, Beijing in winter 2016. The size distributions of particle mass concentrations were bimodal, with the first peak in the fine fraction (0.4–2.1 µm) and the second peak in the coarse fraction (3.3–5.8 µm). Moreover, the proportion of fine particles increased and the proportion of coarse particles decreased as the pollution level was more elevated. It was found that the composition of coarse particles is as important as that of fine particles when pollution of aerosol metals in the atmosphere in 2016 were compared to 2013. In addition, according to the size distribution characteristics, 23 MEs were divided into three groups: (a) Fe, Co, Sr, Al, Ti, Ba, and U, which concentrated in coarse mode; (b) Zn, As, Cd, Tl, and Pb, which concentrated in fine mode; and (c) Na, K, Be, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Mo, Ag, and Sn, showing bimodal distribution. Under clean air, slight pollution and moderate pollution conditions, most elements maintained their original size distributions, while under severe pollution, the unimodal distributions of most MEs became bimodal distributions. The factors analysis combined with size distributions indicated that Na, Zn, Mo, Ag, Cd, and Tl, showing the moderate to severe contamination on environment, were significantly influenced by diffuse regional emissions or anthropogenic source emissions (vehicle exhaust emissions and combustion process). The environmental risk assessment revealed that the heavy metal loading in the atmospheric particles collected had a high potential for ecological risk to the environment during sampling period because of the high contribution of Cd, Tl, Zn and Pb.

Indoor biomass burning produces large amounts of small particles and hazardous contaminants leading to severe air pollution and potentially high health risks associated with inhalation exposure. Personal samplers provide more accurate estimates of inhalation exposure. In this study, inhalation exposure to size-segregated particles and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for the biomass user was studied by deploying personal samplers. The study found that daily PM2.5 inhalation exposure level was as high as 121 ± 96 μg/m3, and over 84% was finer PM1.0. For PAHs, the exposure level was 113 ± 188 ng/m3, with over 77% in PM1.0. High molecular weight PAHs with larger toxic potentials enriched in smaller particles resulting in much high risks associated with PAHs inhalation exposure. Indoor exposure contributed to ~80% of the total inhalation exposure as a result of high indoor air pollution and longer residence spent indoor. The highest exposure risk was found for the male smoker who conducted cooking activities at home.

Airborne bacteria in hospitals have been implicated in nosocomial infections. This investigation studied the characteristics of airborne bacteria and the effect of patient visitation on the bacteria profile in intensive care units (ICUs). Air at a medical ICU and surgical ICU was sampled for one year. Airborne bacteria before and during visits to patients in ICUs were collected using a Six-Stage Viable Andersen Cascade Impactor to analyze the concentration and size distribution of airborne bacteria and the percentage thereof that were antibiotic-resistant. During patient visitation in the ICUs in this study, the number of visitors was 20–80. Airborne bacteria concentration during visiting hours (total averaging 168.5 CFU/m3) was three to four times than before visiting hours (p = 0.043). With increasing the visitors, most of the airborne human-associated bacteria (HAB) concentrations during visitations were higher than before visitations in each season. The two-way ANOVA of HAB concentration before and during visitation (p = 0.028) of combining MICU and SICU in various season (p = 0.007) all revealed statistical agreement. The proportion of particles, from 1.1 to 4.7 µm, during the visits was almost 1–2.4 times that before the visits in most sampling periods (p = 0.028). In addition, the opportunistic pathogens such as Micrococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Acinetobacter spp. were found in the air during visiting times. Small proportions of some environmental strains with a high antibiotic-resistance percentage (42–78%), including Brevundimonas spp., Elizabethkingia spp. and others, were detected during patient visitation. Patient visitation activities affect the bacterial profile in air in ICUs. During the visitation, visitors might bring or generate bacteria into ICUs. Limiting the number of patient visitors to ICUs, wearing respirators and gowns or increasing ventilation rate during and after patient visitation is required to maintain indoor air quality and probably decrease the risk of patient infection.

Oxidative potential (OP), defined as the ability of particulate matter (PM) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), has been considered as a potential health-related metric for PM. Particles with different sizes have different OP and deposition efficiencies in the respiratory tract and pose different health risks. In this study, size-segregated PM samples were collected at a coastal urban site in Xiamen, a port city in southeastern China, between August 2020 and September 2021. The water-soluble constituents, including inorganic ions, elements and organic carbon, were determined. Total volume-normalized OP based on the dithiothreitol assay was highest in spring (0.241 ± 0.033 nmol min -1  m -3 ) and lowest in summer (0.073 ± 0.006 nmol min -1  m -3 ). OP had a biomodal distribution with peaks at 0.25-0.44 μm and 1.0-1.4 μm in spring, summer, and winter and a unimodal pattern with peak at 0.25-0.44 μm in fall, which were different from the patterns of redox-active species. Variations in the seasonality of fine and coarse mode OP and their correlations with water-soluble constituents showed that the size distribution patterns of OP could be attributed to the combined effects of the size distributions of transition metals and redox-active organics and the interactions between them which varied with emissions, meteorological conditions and atmospheric processes. Respiratory tract deposition model indicated that the deposited OP and the toxic elements accounted for 47.9 % and 36.8 % of their measured concentrations, respectively. The highest OP doses and the excess lifetime carcinogenic risk (ELCR) were found in the head airway (>70 %). However, the size distributions of OP deposition and ELCR in the respiratory tract were different, with 63.9 % and 49.4 % of deposited ELCR and OP, respectively, coming from PM 2.5 . Plastic pollution in the aquatic environment has been assessed for many years by ocean waste collection expeditions around the globe or by river sampling. While the total amount of plastic produced worldwide is well documented, the amount of plastic found in the ocean, the distribution of particles on its surface and its evolution over time are still the subject of much debate. In this article, we propose a general fragmentation model, postulating the existence of a critical size below which particle fragmentation becomes extremely unlikely. In the frame of this model, an abundance peak appears for sizes around 1 mm, in agreement with real environmental data. Using, in addition, a realistic exponential waste feed to the ocean, we discuss the relative impact of fragmentation and feed rates, and the temporal evolution of microplastics (MP) distribution. Aerosol pH is not only a diagnostic indicator of secondary aerosol formation, but also a key factor in the specific chemical reaction routes that produce sulfate and nitrate. To understand the characteristics of aerosol acidity in the Mt. Hua, the chemical fractions of water-soluble inorganic ions in the atmospheric PM 2.5 and size-resolved particle at the top and foot of Mt. Hua in summer 2020 were studied. The results showed the mass concentrations of PM 2.5 and water-soluble ions at the foot were 2.0-2.6 times higher than those at the top. The secondary inorganic ions, i.e., SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , and NH 4 + showed a unimodal size distribution (peaking at 0.7-1.1 μm) at the foot and a bimodal (0.7-1.1 μm and 4.7-5.8 μm) size distribution at the top. At the top site, the distribution of NO 4 2- was mainly distributed in the fine particles (D p  < 2.1 μm). NO 3 - showed a unimodal size distribution (peaking at 0.7-1.1 μm) at the foot and a bimodal (0.7-1.1 μm and 4.7-5.8 μm) size distribution at the top. At the top site, the distribution of NO 3 - in coarse particles (> 2.1 μm) was mainly attributed to the gaseous HNO 3 volatilized from fine particles reacting with cations in coarse particles to form non-volatile salts (such as Ca(NO 3 ) 2 ). The pH values of PM 2.5 were 2.7 ± 1.3 and 3.3 ± 0.42 at the top and foot, respectively. NH 4 + /NH 3 (g) plays a decisive role in stabilizing aerosol acidity. In addition, the increase of the liquid water content (LWC) at the foot facilitates the gas-particle conversion of NH 3 , while the H + concentration was diluted, resulting in a decrease in acidity at the foot. Plastic is everywhere as an essential component of industries' products, but accumulation and degradation of plastics into microplastics occurs continuously in aquatic environments. Despite numerous studies investigating the influence of microplastics, challenges remain when comparing comprehensive results due to the lack of agreement regarding microplastics sizes. Over 80 studies and reports were reviewed, revealing the inconsistencies in defining the upper size limit for microplastics, and are the basis of this exploration of the need to redefine the latter by focusing on pragmatic factors such as size distribution and toxicity endpoints in aquatic environments. Reviewed articles indicate a gap between recommendations for microplastics definitions and the current status of microplastics. We suggest initiating a discussion regarding downscaling the broadly accepted 5 mm upper limit to 1000 μm, considering environmentally realistic conditions and SI nomenclature. The aim of the present study was to develop layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles coated with PEGylated phospholipid membrane. By comparing the size distribution and zeta potential, the weight ratio of LDH to lipid materials which constitute the outside membrane was identified as 2:1. Transmission electron microscopy photographs confirmed the core-shell structure of PEGylated phospholipid membrane coated LDH (PEG-PLDH) nanoparticles, and cell cytotoxicity assay showed their good cell viability on Hela and BALB/C-3T3 cells over the concentration range from 0.5 to 50 μg/mL.

Outdoor aerosol particles were characterized in industrial area of Samalut city (El-minia/Egypt) using low pressure Berner cascade impactor as an aerosol sampler. The impactor operates at 1.7 m3/h flow rate. Seven elements were investigated including Ca, Ba, Fe, K, Cu, Mn and Pb using atomic absorption technique. The mean mass concentrations of the elements ranged from 0.42 ng/m3 (for Ba) to 89.62 ng/m3 (for Fe). The mass size distributions of the investigated elements were bi-modal log normal distribution corresponding to the accumulation and coarse modes. The enrichment factors of elements indicate that Ca, Ba, Fe, K, Cu and Mn are mainly emitted into the atmosphere from soil sources while Pb is mostly due to anthropogenic sources.

Sufficient levels of thermal, electrical, mechanical, or electrochemical abuse can cause thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, leading to the release of electrolyte vapor, combustible gas mixtures, and high-temperature particles. Particle emissions due to thermal failure of batteries may cause serious pollution of the atmosphere, water sources, and soil as well as enter the human biological chain through crops, posing a potential threat to human health. Furthermore, high-temperature particle emissions may ignite the flammable gas mixtures produced during the thermal runaway process, resulting in combustion and explosions. This research focused on determining the particle size distribution, elemental composition, morphology, and crystal structure of particles released from different cathode batteries after thermal runaway. Accelerated adiabatic calorimetry tests were performed on a fully charged Li(Ni 0.3 Co 0.3 Mn 0.3 )O 2 battery (NCM111), Li(Ni 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 )O 2 battery (NCM523), and Li(Ni 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 )O 2 battery (NCM622). Results of all three batteries indicate that particles with a diameter less than or equal to 0.85 mm exhibit an increase in volume distribution followed by a decrease in volume distribution as the diameter increases. F, S, P, Cr, Ge, and Ge were detected in particle emissions with mass percentages ranging from 6.5% to 43.3%, 0.76-1.20%, 2.41-4.83%,1.8-3.7%, and 0-0.14%, respectively. When present in high concentrations, these may have negative impacts on human health and the environment. In addition, the diffraction patterns of the particle emissions were approximately the same for NC111, NCM523, and NCM622, with emissions primarily composed of Ni/Co elemental, graphite, Li 2 CO 3 , NiO, LiF, MnO, and LiNiO 2 . Black carbon (BC) has a significantly negative impact on air quality, climate and human health. Here we investigated the sources and health effects of BC in urban area of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) based on online data measured by Aerodyne soot particle high-resolution time of flight aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS). In urban PRD, BC particles mainly came from vehicle emissions especially heavy-duty vehicle exhausts (contributing 42.9 % of total BC mass concentration), long-range transport (27.6 %), and aged biomass combustion emissions (22.3 %). Indicated by source analysis using simultaneous aethalometer data, BC associated with local secondary oxidation and transport may also be originated from fossil fuel combustion, especially traffic sources in urban and surrounding areas. Size-resolved BC mass concentrations provided by SP-AMS, for the first time to our best knowledge, were used to calculate BC deposition in the human respiratory tract (HRT) of different populations (children, adults, and the elderly) by the Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model. We found that submicron BC was deposited more in the pulmonary (P) region (49.0-53.2 % of the total BC deposition dose), while less in the tracheobronchial (TB, 35.6-37.2 %) and head (HA, 11.2-13.8 %) regions. Adults suffered the highest BC deposition (1.19 μg day -1 ) than the elderly (1.09 μg day -1 ) and children (0.25 μg day -1 ). BC deposition rate was greater at night (especially 18:00-24:00) than during the daytime. The maximum deposition in the HRT was found for BC particles around 100 nm, mainly in deeper respiratory regions (TB and P), which may cause more serious health effects. Adults and the elderly group are confronted with the notable carcinogenic risk of BC in the urban PRD, up to 29 times higher than the threshold. Airborne transmission is a well-established mode of dissemination for infectious diseases, particularly in closed environments. However, previous research has often overlooked the potential impact of background particle concentration on bioaerosol characteristics. We compared the spatial and temporal distributions of bioaerosols under two levels of background particle concentration: heavily polluted (150-250 μg/m 3 ) and excellent (0-35 μg/m 3 ) in a typical ward. Serratia marcescens bioaerosol was adopted as a bioaerosol tracer, and the bioaerosol concentrations were quantified using six-stage Andersen cascade impactors. The results showed a significant reduction (over at least 62.9%) in bioaerosol concentration under heavily polluted levels compared to excellent levels at all sampling points. The temporal analysis also revealed that the decay rate of bioaerosols was higher (at least 0.654 min -1 ) under heavily polluted levels compared to excellent levels. These findings suggest that background particles can facilitate bioaerosol removal, contradicting the assumption made in previous research that background particle has no effect on bioaerosol characteristics. Furthermore, we observed differences in the size distribution of bioaerosols between the two levels of background particle concentration. The average bioaerosols size under heavily polluted levels was found to be higher than that under excellent levels, and the average particle size under heavily polluted levels gradually increased with time. Studies of DNA–ligand interaction on a single molecule level provide opportunities to understand individual behavior of molecules. Construction of DNA molecules with repetitive copies of the same segments of sequences linked in series could be helpful for enhancing the interaction possibility for sequence-specific binding ligand to DNA. Here we report on the use of synthetic oligonucleotides to self-assembly into duplex DNA concatemeric molecules. Two strands of synthetic oligonucleotides used here were designed with 50-mer in length and the sequences are semi-complimentary so to hybridize spontaneously into concatemers of double stranded DNA. In order to optimize the length of the concatemers the oligonucleotides were incubated at different oligomer concentrations, ionic strengths and temperatures for different durations. Increasing the salt concentration to 200 mM NaCl was found to be the major optimizing factor because at this enhanced ionic strength the concatemers formed most quickly and the other parameters had no detectable effect. The size and shape of formed DNA concatemers were studied by gel electrophoresis in agarose, polyacrylamide gels and by AFM. Our results show that linear DNA constructs up to several hundred base pairs were formed and could be separated from a substantial fraction of non-linear constructs.

Toxic metals (TMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in size-segregated particles during common days (CD) and different heavy pollution (HP) episodes were measured during 2018-2021 in a Chinese megacity. The Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry Model (MPPD) was performed to estimate deposition efficiency, and then inhalation risks in the human pulmonary region during different types of HP were assessed and compared. The higher pulmonary deposition efficiency of PAHs and TMs during all types of HP than those during CD was confirmed. The accumulative incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of different HP were 2.42 × 10 -5 , 1.52 × 10 -5 , 1.39 × 10 -5 , 1.30 × 10 -5 and 2.94 × 10 -6 for HP4 (combustion sources HP), HP1 (ammonium nitrate HP), HP5 (mixed sources HP), HP3 (resuspended dust HP) and HP2 (ammonium sulfate HP), respectively. The accumulative hazard quotient (HQ) during different HP episodes decreased in the order of HP4 (0.32) > HP3 (0.24) > HP1 (0.22) > HP5 (0.18) > HP2 (0.05). The inhalation risks were dominated by Ni and Cr, what's more, the HQ of Ni and ILCR of Cr during the five HP episodes shared a similar size distribution pattern. However, the characteristic components during different HP episodes and their size distributions of them were distinctive. The size distribution of inhalation risks of the related components (Ni, Cr, BaP, and As) from the combustion process during HP4 peaked at fine mode (0.65-2.1 μm). The size distribution of inhalation risks of the dust-related components (Mn and V) and the components (As and BaP) that are likely to volatilize and re-distribution peaked at coarse mode (2.1-3.3 μm) during HP3. The subject of this research was the inorganic gunshot residue component collected from shooting patterns obtained on woven cotton cloth using a Pietro Beretta model 70 pistol, cal. 7.65 mm and Serbian ammunition for the following muzzle-to-target distances: 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 cm. For each distance, three rounds of shooting were performed. Particles were lifted within a 10 cm radius of the projectile entrance and automatically analyzed using a scanning electron microscope coupled with an energy dispersion X-ray spectrometry. The obtained data on the populations of particles were analyzed taking into account their numbers, chemical classes and sizes. The results showed an apparent maximum incidence within all particles containing barium at about 50 cm distance. Also, lead particles revealed a distinct behaviour, being dominant at a 25 cm distance, falling below the other chemical classes, and finally becoming dominant again at 125 cm. The analysis of the frequency of occurrence of particles sorted according to their sizes confirmed that the small particle population is the largest, and their distribution in function of the equivalent circle diameter is exponential-like. The obtained results provided knowledge on the distribution of particles in the vicinity of the tested firearm and ammunition cal. 7.65 mm which generally corroborates with similarly studied GSR distributions obtained for the use of pistols cal. 9 mm. This information, together with the examinations of gunshot damages and other types of residues such as soot or unburned propellant grains may support qualitative inferences on shooting distance estimation, especially in cases, when the firearm and cartridges are not available to perform test shooting. In such cases even roughly estimated shooting distance can be helpful, e.g. for confirming or excluding the possibility of self-inflicted injuries or suicide and infer on the mutual position of the shooting stage actors. The quantitative change and size distribution of particles in the effluents from a sand filter and a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter in a drinking water treatment plant were investigated. The average total concentration of particles in the sand filter effluent during a filter cycle was 148 particles/mL, 27 of which were larger than 2 µm in size. The concentration in the GAC effluent (561 particles/mL) was significantly greater than that in the sand filter effluent. The concentration of particles larger than 2 µm in the GAC filter effluent reached 201 particles/mL, with the amount of particles with sizes between 2 µm and 15 µm increasing. The most probable number (MPN) of carbon fines reached 43 unit/L after six hours and fines between 0.45 µm and 8.0 µm accounted for more than 50%. The total concentration of outflowing bacteria in the GAC filter effluent, 350 CFU (colony-forming units)/mL, was greater than that in the sand filter effluent, 210 CFU/mL. The desorbed bacteria concentration reached an average of 310 CFU/mg fines. The disinfection efficiency of desorbed bacteria was lower than 40% with 1.5 mg/L of chlorine. The disinfection effect showed that the inactivation rate with 2.0 mg/L of chloramine (90%) was higher than that with chlorine (70%). Experimental results indicated that the high particle concentration in raw water and sedimentation effluent led to high levels of outflowing particles in the sand filter effluent. The activated carbon fines in the effluent accounted for a small proportion of the total particle amount, but the existing bacteria attached to carbon fines may influence the drinking water safety. The disinfection efficiency of desorbed bacteria was lower than that of free bacteria with chlorine, and the disinfection effect on bacteria attached to carbon fines with chloramine was better than that with only chlorine.

Nanocellulose is a remarkable biomaterial. It is a plastic alternative with significance from the viewpoint of carbon offset and neutrality. To efficiently develop nanocellulose-based functional materials, it is imperative to evaluate their dispersion states. In this study, the sedimentation equivalent diameter distributions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are analyzed by centrifugal sedimentation. The diameter distribution is well correlated with that estimated from the widths and the lengths of the CNCs obtained by transmission electron microscopy. In this study, we combined the measured bulk particle number concentration (N CN ), particle number size distribution (PNSD) and bulk cloud condensation nuclei concentration (N CCN ) at various supersaturation (SS) levels to investigate competitive activation of aerosols in the marine atmospheres over the marginal seas of China during two winter campaigns Campaign A (December 9-19, 2019) and Campaign B (December 28, 2019-January 16, 2020). During the two campaigns, we observed various categories of aerosols, i.e., long-range transport continental aerosols, clean marine aerosols, grown new particles ranging from nucleation mode to larger sizes, and grown pre-existing particles ranging from Aitken mode to accumulation mode size, etc. We found that the measured N CCN increased by only approximately 30 % with increases in SS levels from 0.2 % to 1.0 %, e.g., (1.8 ± 1.4) × 10 3 cm -3 at SS = 0.2 % and (2.4 ± 1.4) × 10 3 cm -3 at SS = 1.0 % during Campaign A. We further calculated the hygroscopicity parameter kappa (κ) by combining simultaneously measured PNSD and bulk N CCN to explore the causes. The calculated κ values were below 0.1 at SS = 0.4 % during the 72 % (or 88 %) period of Campaign A (or Campaign B). When κ values below 0.1 (or 0.2) were excluded, the remaining κ values were apparently reasonable, with an average of 0.22 (or 0.36) and a standard deviation of 0.10 (or 0.21) at SS = 0.4 % during Campaign A (or Campaign B). The ciliate Mesodinium rubrum Lohmann 1908 (=Myrionecta rubra Jankowski 1976) is an important phototrophic organism in the Gdańsk Basin. In June 2002 the vertical distribution and size structure of the M. rubrum population were studied. Its presence was generally observed in the whole water column (one exception was the anoxic near-bottom zone in the Gdańsk Deep) at all stations studied. Maximum abundance (18300 cells dm-3) was recorded at 26 m depth at the station located in the inner Gulf of Gdańsk. Analysis of the size structure of the counted organisms demonstrated the co-existence of small and large cells of M. rubrum in the upper layer of the water column and a gradual increase with depth of the prevalence of large specimens. This shows that at least two forms of M. rubrum exist in the region studied. Deep migrations are probably undertaken only by relatively large organisms.

Black carbon (BC) exerts profound impacts on air quality, human health, and climate. Here, we investigated concentrations and size distributions of refractory BC (rBC) and mixing state and morphology of rBC-containing particles in urban Seoul for 2019 summer. Mass concentrations of rBC ranged from 0.02 μgm -3 to 2.89 μgm -3 , and daily maximums of rBC mass, daily minimums of rBC mass median diameter (MMD) (110-130 nm), and shell-to-core ratio (R shell/core ) occurred with NO 2 maximums during morning rush hour. As the first report of ground observations on rBC mixing state, these results indicate that vehicle emission is a major local source of rBC in Seoul. MMDs of 127-146 nm and the greatest mass loadings of ≥1 μg m -3 were accompanied by high O 3 and PM 2.5 concentrations, in contrast to the largest MMDs (135-165 nm) associated with transport from upstream regions. The average R shell/core was 1.25 for the rBC mass-equivalent diameter (D rBC ) of 140-220 nm. R shell/core increased gradually through the day and was positively correlated with O x concentration, indicating photochemical aging of rBC particles. Co-emissions of rBC and volatile organic compounds from vehicles facilitated internal mixing during the daytime. However, R shell/core tended to be low at temperature >∼30 °C, while 58 % of rBC particles with R shell/core exceeding 1.25 were found at nighttime under relative humidity >75 %. These results demonstrate that the mixing state of freshly-emitted rBC particles was altered through coating by photochemically oxidized vapors during the day and hygroscopic growth at night. Additionally, the delay-time approach revealed rBC morphological characteristics, the most common being the bare type (74 %), and the attached type (6 %) was relatively large in numbers during morning rush hour.
