Oil tree peony is a unique woody oil crop found exclusively in China. Its seed oil is a highly nutritious edible vegetable oil. However, its seed production varies greatly and is often low. Oil tree peony is a plant that relies on insects for pollination, but inadequate pollination is a common occurrence. In this study, we focused on the Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’ species and conducted a five-year study (from 2017 to 2022) in Luoyang, China. Our objective was to assess the extent of pollination deficiency and dependence, as well as quantify the contribution of supplemented bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) to the yield of oil tree peony. We also examined the effect of supplemented bumblebees on the temporal variation in yield through various pollinator survey designs, including supplemented bumblebees (BP), open pollination (OP), pollinator exclusion (EP), self-pollination treatments (SP), and artificial cross-pollination (CP). The results revealed a medium pollination deficit (D = 0.50) at the study sites for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022, indicating limited pollination for oil tree peony under natural conditions. Importantly, BP significantly compensated for this deficiency (D = 0.22). Over the course of five years, BP increased the yield of oil tree peony by 82.87% on average compared to EP. Furthermore, the yield variation coefficient of EP (CVt=0.20) increased by 100% compared to BP (CVt=0.10). And we also observed significant variability in other yield parameters. Additionally, oil tree peony production was reduced by 44.24% in the absence of flower visitors, and the dependence on BP reached a “high” level. The fatty acid content in the seed oil did not show significant differences across treatments, indicating its stability. Overall, our pollination practices demonstrate that supplementing bee pollination can provide sufficient and stable pollination services, resulting in a higher and more stable yield of oil tree peony seeds.

The position and depth of a scour hole around a bridge abutment are the important design parameters. The existing models have been mostly developed for steady flows, whereas real-life abutments often fail due to intrinsically unsteady flood streams. This study used nine hydrographs with different durations and skewness values and evaluated the ultimate scour depth and temporal scour depth variations for a rectangular abutment using the precise underwater image recording devices and then image processing method. Moreover, an eco-friendly permeable spur dike was employed to protect the abutment for the first time, and the testes were re-performed in the presence of the permeable spur dike. Although the hydrograph skewness had no significant effect on the ultimate scour depth, scour variations are dependent on the skewness of the hydrograph. The scour depth increased by up to 17% after the time of the peak flood, and then its variations became highly smaller, with the rising limb having a larger effect than the falling limb on the scour depth. Finally, equations were developed to calculate the scour depth during hydrographs. These equations enable bridge designers to have deeper insights into scouring around abutments during a flood and provide more reliable and economical estimates in the design of the abutment foundation size and depth.

Background: In the context of climate change and urbanization, the temporal variation of the adverse health effect of extreme temperature has attracted increasing attention. Methods: The meteorological data and the daily death records of mortality from respiratory diseases of 136 Chinese cities were from 2006 to 2019. Heat wave and cold spell were selected as the indicator events of extreme high temperature and extreme low temperature, respectively. The generalized linear model and time-varying distributed lag model were used to perform a two-stage time-series analysis to evaluate the temporal variation of the mortality risk associated with extreme temperature in the total population, sub-populations (sex- and age- specific) and different regions (climatic zone and relative humidity level). Results: During the study period, relative risk (RR) of respiratory mortality associated with heat wave decreased from 1.22 (95 %CI: 1.07–1.39) to 1.13 (95 %CI: 1.01–1.26) in the total population, and RR of respiratory mortality associated with cold spell decreased from 1.30 (95 %CI: 1.14–1.49) to 1.17 (95 %CI: 1.08–1.26). The time elapsed between the moments of maximum rainfall intensity and maximum soil moisture, known as peak to peak (P2P), is part of the hydrological response of the soil, but literature has missed this metric in any woody crop. In a vineyard with permanent vegetation cover (humid climatic conditions), the influence of two cultivars (Agudelo and Blanco Legítimo) and two zones (rows and inter-row areas) on the values of soil moisture response time, absolute change in moisture (ΔS) and P2P was evaluated for 118 rainfall events in three soil layers. 12 capacitance probes and a weather station were used, and data measured every 15 min. A positive response (ΔS > 0) was observed in 79 %, 73 % and 67 % of all events at soil depth of 5, 15 and 25 cm, decreasing ΔS with increasing soil depth. Differences of ΔS were significant among layers, but not among cultivars and zones. The maximum ΔS occurred at 15 cm, while the minimum was observed at 25 cm. No response was evident when specific thresholds were not reached: rainfall depth (0.60 mm event−1), maximum intensity (1.20 mm h−1) or duration (30 min). Topsoil conditions –high rainfall interception by the dense cover and high soil organic matter content– influenced the results at 5 cm. Rain parameters correlated well with ΔS, but weak with the response time and P2P. P2P occurred earlier in the rows than between the rows, especially at 15 cm. Shorter P2P appeared in Agudelo, with significant differences in the rows at 5 cm. P2P differed significantly among layers, increasing P2P with soil depth. Similar ΔS values appeared in Spring and Autumn, and were significantly different than those in Summer, but P2P did not differ significantly among seasons. Therefore, the magnitude and timing of the soil hydrological response were independent processes.

Building and furniture materials are significant sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and determine their long-time indoor levels. However, the variations of indoor VOCs and associated health risks of interior finishers during the construction stages are poorly understood. In this study, VOCs in the indoor microenvironments were measured at different interior finishing stages at two renovated residences using thermal desorption and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The mean concentrations of the Σ15 VOCs were 118.2 μg/m3 in Home A and 232.5 μg/m3 in Home B. The simultaneous outdoor levels were approximately three times lower than indoors. The VOC concentrations were obviously lower than previous measurements in newly renovated residences, reflecting reduced use of these VOCs in interior materials. Temporal variations in the VOC concentrations during the interior finish period were compound- or room-dependent at each residence The remarkable rise in the VOC concentrations was largely affected by furniture installation at both residences. The non-cancer risks of VOC exposure were lower for both interior finishers and occupants. However, the cumulative cancer risks for interior finishers (1.2 × 10−4) exceed the acceptable threshold limit. The occupational exposure at the wall painting stage was the highest, and formaldehyde is the most significant contributor to both cancer and noncancer risks. This study also highlights the importance of detecting novel VOCs that may be present in interior finish materials as indicated by the TVOC measurements.

This study examined the atmospheric Black Carbon (BC) and Organic Carbon (OC) data for two years from January 2019 to December 2020 in Monrovia, Liberia. This study is the first of its kind in Monrovia, Liberia and the Mano River Union region. The objective is to evaluate the temporal variation in BC and OC over Monrovia and locate the probable local and regional source locations contributing to BC and OC therein. We also presented here the relationship of BC and OC with meteorological parameters. The highest BC (∼1.4 µg m−3) and OC (∼14 µg m−3) concentrations were observed in January 2019 and 2020. A clear seasonal effect was found in both years, with high mean BC (∼4.9 µg m−3) and OC (∼10 µg m−3) during the dry season (November to April). Diurnal variation suggested high BC and OC during 5:00–7:00 AM, 12 noon, 2:00 PM, and 4:00–7:00 PM. Long-range transportation and local emission sources were studied using Conditional Bivariate Probability Function (CBPF), and Concentration Weighted Trajectory (CWT). CBPF indicated that higher BC and OC concentrations were experienced when the wind was blowing from the South (at >2 ms−1) and North-West (1–2 ms−1) where a lot of shipping activities are carried out. CWT for BC showed that the air mass passes over Senegal through Guinea Bissau via the Atlantic Ocean while for OC, on the Atlantic Ocean and Freeport of Monrovia, indicating shipping emissions as probable sources. The results of this study can help policymakers devise appropriate strategies to control the BC and OC emissions over Monrovia, Liberia.

Global climate change has increased the probability and intensity of extreme weather events. The adverse health effect of extreme temperature has gone through a temporal variation over years. Time-series data including city-level daily cardiovascular death records and meteorological data were collected from 136 Chinese cities during 2006 and 2019. A time-varying distributed lag model with interaction terms was applied to assess the temporal change of mortality risk and attributable mortality of heat wave and cold spell. The mortality effect of heat wave generally increased and that of cold spell decreased significantly in the total population during the study period. The heat wave effect increased especially among the female and people aged 65 to 74. As for the cold spell, the reduced susceptibility was detected both in the temperate and cold climatic zone. Our findings appeal for counterpart measures corresponding to sub-populations and regions responding to future extreme climate events from the public and individuals.

Cartagena-La Union mining district (SE Spain) has unconnected dry riverbeds, which transport mining waste downstream under torrential rain events, polluting a coastal lagoon (Mar Menor). Additionally, in the cropland Campo de Cartagena, agricultural activities promote nitrate and phosphate accumulation in that lagoon. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the spatial-temporal trends of sediments and runoff water properties in El Albujón y La Carrasquilla riverbeds. The sampling campaign was carried out before (BR) and after (AR) rainy period. Georeferenced points were established from the headwaters to the mouth of two riverbeds, 12 sediment samples were collected in each riverbed. Meanwhile, runoff water in El Albujón consisted of 9 points covering the zone that continuously drained into Mar Menor lagoon. Also, water samples were collected in La Carrasquilla during the rainy period, from 18th to 28th of March, the samples were located in the headwater and the mouth of the dry riverbed. Sediments samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, organic/inorganic carbon, nutrients and heavy metals. To determine the pollution level by metal(loid)s in sediment and water, the reference background values established by World Health Organization (WHO) for water, and pollution indexes (contamination factor, pollution load index, potential ecological risk index) for sediments were used. The results of the runoff water of El Albujón exhibited no temporal variation, with a high concentration of NO 3 - along the discharge zone, which exceeds the standards established by WHO (102 mg L -1 BR and 101 mg L -1 AR). In the sediments of El Albujón, the pollution indexes showed no contamination of metal(loid). Oppositely, La Carrasquilla dry riverbed presented metal(loid)s contamination in the sediment in all the sampling points for both sampling periods (BR and AR). In the case of runoff water, in La Carrasquilla, during the rain event, the results exhibited concentrations over the limits for Cd, Mn, and Zn in the headwater. The temporal variability between a dry and rainy period represented a significant variance, especially for the metal(loid)s concentration on both sites. This study assessed the occurrence and ecological potential risk of nine selected pharmaceuticals in water samples from the Juquehy River. The river flows continuously to Juquehy Beach, known as "the jewel of the north coast" of São Paulo, Brazil. Samples were collected during Christmas and the New Year (period of December 2023-January 2024), in addition to a previous baseline weekend, to compare the loads during "celebratory parties" versus "normal operational conditions." The findings indicated that the "mass gathering" during Christmas and New Year holidays contributed significantly to an increase of the mass load of the nine pharmaceuticals flowing along to the Juquehy River, i.e., caffeine (14.40-633.00 ng/L) > losartan ( furosemide (< LOQ to 9.16 ng/L) > diclofenac (0.61-4.55 ng/L) > carbamazepine (< LOQ to 0.73 ng/L) > orphenadrine (< LOQ to 0.11 ng/L) showed higher concentrations during the New Year holiday. Conversely, atenolol (< LOQ to 13.10 ng/L) > benzoylecgonine (0.33-7.23 ng/L) > cocaine (0.12-6.59 ng/L) showed higher concentrations during the Christmas day. The individual ecological risk assessment in the Juquehy River revealed a clear environmental concern for the aquatic ecosystem. The threat to the aquatic biota is significant, with caffeine and losartan presenting a moderate level of risk. The Haihe River Basin is an important grain-producing area in China. It is of great significance to explore and grasp the temporal and spatial evolution of drought for drought prevention and disaster mitigation, water security, and food security. In this study, based on the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), gravity center model, standard deviation ellipse, and other methods, we analyzed the temporal and spatial evolution of drought in Haihe River Basin from 1960 to 2020. The results showed that during 1960 ∼ 2020, the frequency of drought in the Haihe River Basin had an upward trend, and light drought and moderate drought occurred frequently. Light drought was prone to occur in winter (January, February, December), and moderate drought mainly occurred in March (The first month of spring). The frequency of severe drought and extreme drought has increased significantly since 1990, and the monthly impact is spreading. The annual drought barycenters are distributed in plain areas such as Beijing, Hebei province, and showed a northeast to southwest zonal distribution in the basin, with a general trend of moving toward southwest. The monthly drought barycenters are mainly distributed in the central part of the basin around Baoding, and their migratory direction is mainly northeast and southwest.

We present a new hydrometric dataset that comprises water level and discharge time series measured at five tributaries draining sub-catchments of the mountainous Mueglitz River Basin in Germany. The monitoring sites were set up as far downstream as possible, taking into account technical and access restrictions. In total, 746,211 records of absolute pressure, electric conductivity, and water temperature were measured over 1.5 years (2019/04/24–2020/10/09) at a temporal resolution of 5 min using automatized dataloggers deployed at the streambed. The data was processed and is available for each site at various levels ranging from level 1–3. The level 1 data product contains merged and cleaned raw data, level 2 consists of water level time series based on local air pressure and surveying data measured on-site, and level 3 data includes stream discharge estimated by using the Manning formula. The data processing was performed with a generic workflow written in Python 3 which is referred to in this article for public use. The time series can be used to analyze extreme runoff events and catchment water balances, validate hydrological models, and for the planning of own measurement campaigns with similar objectives.

Illicit drugs have become a crucial global social issue, with South Korea experiencing a continuous increase in the number of offenders and drug smuggling. This study employed wastewater-based epidemiology to investigate consumption patterns of 8 illicit drugs and their 7 metabolites during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022) in South Korea. Ten compouds were detected in the wastewater influent. Methamphetamine (METH) was prevalent in samples, followed by amphetamine and ecstasy (MDMA). Interestingly, MDMA and ketamine (KET), which were not detected in previous Korean studies conducted before COVID-19 pandemic, were detected in this study. METH exhibited the highest consumption rates, decreasing from 16.6 to 12.4 mg/day/1000 people between 2020 and 2022, while MDMA increased over the three years (mean: 1.16, 1.24, and 1.62 mg/day/1000 people in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively) (p < 0.05). Significant correlations were identified between regional income levels and the consumption rates of METH (p < 0.01), MDMA (p < 0.01), and KET (p < 0.05). Furthermore, METH and MDMA consumption rates in cities were positively correlated with the number of drug offenders arrested and local clubs in those cities. Annual average land-use regression (LUR) models have been widely used to assess spatial patterns of air pollution exposures. However, they fail to capture diurnal variability in air pollution and consequently might result in biased dynamic exposure assessments. In this study we aimed to model average hourly concentrations for two major pollutants, NO 2 and PM 2.5 , for the Netherlands using the LUR algorithm. We modelled the spatial variation of average hourly concentrations for the years 2016-2019 combined, for two seasons, and for two weekday types. Two modelling approaches were used, supervised linear regression (SLR) and random forest (RF). The potential predictors included population, road, land use, satellite retrievals, and chemical transport model pollution estimates variables with different buffer sizes. We also temporally adjusted hourly concentrations from a 2019 annual model using the hourly monitoring data, to compare its performance with the hourly modelling approach. The results showed that hourly NO 2 models performed overall well (5-fold cross validation R 2  = 0.50-0.78), while the PM 2.5 performed moderately (5-fold cross validation R 2  = 0.24-0.62). Both for NO 2 and PM 2.5 the warm season models performed worse than the cold season ones, and the weekends' worse than weekdays'. The performance of the RF and SLR models was similar for both pollutants. For both SLR and RF, variables with larger buffer sizes representing variation in background concentrations, were selected more often in the weekend models compared to the weekdays, and in the warm season compared to the cold one. Temporal adjustment of annual average models performed overall worse than both modelling approaches (NO 2 hourly R 2  = 0.35-0.70; PM 2.5 hourly R 2  = 0.01-0.15). The ubiquitous and adverse effects of estrogens have aroused global concerns. Natural and synthetic estrogens in 255 water samples from the southern Bohai Sea were analyzed over three years. Total estrogen concentrations were 11.0-268 ng/L in river water and 1.98-99.7 ng/L in seawater, with bisphenol A (BPA) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) being the predominant estrogens, respectively. Estrogen showed the highest concentrations in summer 2018, followed by spring 2021 and spring 2019, which was consistent with the higher estrogen flux from rivers during summer. Higher estrogen concentrations in 2021 than in 2019 were driven by the higher level of BPA, an additive used in personal protective equipment. Estrogen exhibited higher concentrations in the southern coast of the Yellow River Delta and the northeastern coast of Laizhou bay due to the riverine input and aquaculture. Estrogens could disturb the normal endocrine activities of organisms and edict high ecological risks (90th simulated RQ T > 1.0) to aquatic organisms, especially to fish. EE2 was the main contributor of estrogenic potency and ecological risk, which requires special concern. Levels and constituents of ambient air pollution have substantially changed in China over the last decade. Such changes may lead to the variations in health effects of air pollution. Very limited studies, however, have investigated the temporal variations in health effects of air pollution on a long-term scale, especially in China. We evaluated the temporal variations in short-term associations between PM10 and NO2 concentrations and emergency department (ED) visits during a 12-year period from 2008 to 2019 in Shanghai, China. A quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression was performed to assess the associations between PM10 and NO2 concentrations and ED visits during entire study period and three specific periods. We evaluated the temporal variations of period-specific associations with an interaction variable between pollutant concentrations and period indicators. We further investigated the concentration-response relationships for specific periods. The effects on specific subpopulations (males and females; 18–65 years old and >65 years old) were also examined. A 10 μg/m3 increase of PM10 and NO2 corresponded to 0.48% (95% CI: 0.36%, 0.59%) and 1.51% (95% CI: 1.25%, 1.78%) increase in ED visits at lag0–7 day for entire study period, respectively. The short-term associations between ED visits and NO2 remained unchanged over time (P-value > 0.05), while the effects from PM10 were significantly inconsistent (P-value < 0.05), with the highest effect observed during the intermediate period of 2012–2015 and the lowest effect observed during the initial period of 2008–2011. Similar temporal trends were found in subgroups, except for elderly group. Despite substantial reduction in ambient PM10 and NO2 concentrations, the short-term effects on ED visits for NO2 remained stable and even increased for PM10. More efforts were needed to reduce harmful components in air pollution mixture to reduce the health hazards of air pollution.

Objective: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) occurrence has been shown to exhibit a circadian rhythm, following the circadian rhythm of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) occurrence. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with changes in circadian rhythm. We aimed to compare the temporal variation of OHCA occurrence over the day and week between OHCA patients with DM and those without. Methods: In two population-based OHCA registries (Amsterdam Resuscitation Studies [ARREST] 2010–2016, n = 4163, and Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry [DANCAR], 2010–2014, n = 12,734), adults (≥18y) with presumed cardiac cause of OHCA and available medical history were included. Single and double cosinor analysis was performed to model circadian variation of OHCA occurrence. Stratified analysis of circadian variation was performed in patients with AMI as immediate cause of OHCA. Results: DM patients (22.8% in ARREST, 24.2% in DANCAR) were older and more frequently had cardiovascular risk factors or previous cardiovascular disease. The Mountain Hawk-Eagles (Nisaetus nipalensis) is a large raptor native to Asia. Despite the wide distribution of this species, their vocalizations have been described only occasionally, and no studies have provided detailed outcomes for other researchers to follow. This study aimed to obtain systematic and comprehensive results on the vocalizations of the Mountain Hawk-Eagle and a preliminary understanding of its vocal behavior in terms of temporal changes. This study performed a road transect survey along two forestry roads between January 2006 and December 2008 in Taitung County. Two nests were found and observed upstream of the Dazhu and Fangshan streams during the breeding season in 2007 and 2010, respectively. All vocalizations, vocal behavior, and behavior context were recorded. Mountain Hawk-Eagles were discovered to produce at least seven types of vocalization depending on context and structure. The flying call was recorded throughout the year and was made by both sexes. Some vocalizations were recorded only during the breeding season or could only be identified around the nest area; for example, the female begging call, juvenile begging call, and alarm call. From the road transect survey and observation of nests during breeding seasons, we discovered temporal variation in the call rate of the Mountain Hawk-Eagle. The findings and recordings made in this study provide insight into the vocal behavior of the Mountain Hawk-Eagle, but further investigations are needed.

Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) are subjected to a public perceived risk of adverse effects, and results from many epidemiology studies were largely inconclusive. Results of EMF measurements vary among researchers due to co-varieties of factors among which are temporal variations. This study assessed temporal variation of exposure from radiofrequency electromagnetic fields from some selected MCBSs in Kuje Area Council, in Nigeria. The Mobile phone frequencies band considered in the study area are GSM 900 MHz, GSM 1800 MHz, and Wi-Fi 2400 MHz. Using a selective radiation spectral analyzer HF- 2025E, measurements of peak power densities and their corresponding time of occurrence were made. The result shows that the RF fields vary with time in different locations for various power densities. When the aggregate of maximum exposures was compared with the international commission on Non – ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNRP) guidelines, they were found to be below the recommended limit.

There is generally a close relationship between a consumer's food and its optimal nutrients. When there is a mismatch, it is hypothesized that mobile herbivores switch between food items to balance nutrients, however, there are limited data for field populations. In this study, we measured ambient plant nutrient content at two time points and contrasted our results with the nutrient ratio selected by wild female and male grasshoppers (Oedaleus senegalensis). Few plants were near O. senegalensis’ optimal protein:carbohydrate ratio (P:C), nor were plants complementary. Grasshoppers collected earlier all regulated for a carbohydrate-biased ratio but females ate slightly more protein. We hypothesized that the long migration undertaken by this species may explain its carbohydrate needs. In contrast to most laboratory studies, grasshoppers collected later did not tightly regulate their P:C. These results suggest that field populations are not shifting their P:C to match seasonal plant nutrient shifts and that mobile herbivores rely on post-ingestive mechanisms in the face of environmental variation. Because this is among the first studies to examine the relationship between ambient nutrient landscape and physiological state our data are a key step in bridging knowledge acquired from lab studies to hypotheses regarding the role ecological factors play in foraging strategies.

Eutrophication impacts freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity across the world. While temporal monitoring has shown changes in the nutrient inputs in many areas, how spatial and temporal beta diversity change along the eutrophication gradient under a changing context remains unclear. In this regard, analyses based on time series spanning multiple years are particularly scarce. We sampled benthic macroinvertebrates in 32 sites across three lake habitat types (MACROPHYTE, OPEN WATER, PHYTOPLANKTON) along the eutrophication gradient of Lake Taihu in four seasons from 2007 to 2019. Our purpose was to identify the relative contributions of spatial and temporal dissimilarity (i.e., inter-annual dissimilarity and seasonal dissimilarity) to overall benthic biodiversity. We also examined spatio-temporal patterns in community assembly mechanisms and how associated variation in benthic macroinvertebrate communities responded to nutrient indicators. Results showed that eutrophication caused macroinvertebrate community homogenization both along spatial and temporal gradients. Though spatial variability dominated the variation of species richness, abundance and community dissimilarity, seasons within years dissimilarity, inter-annual dissimilarity and seasonal dissimilarity were much more sensitive to eutrophication. Moreover, eutrophication inhibited a strong environmental control in benthic macroinvertebrate community assembly, including a dominant role of deterministic process in the spatial variation of macroinvertebrate communities and transition from stochastic to deterministic process in the temporal assembly of macroinvertebrate communities along the eutrophication gradient. Introduction: Seasonality of pediatric trauma has been previously described, although the association of season with hour of presentation is less understood. Both factors have potential implications for resource allocation and team preparedness., Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted to analyze the records of injured children <18 years-old who presented to one of the 15 trauma centers within Los Angeles County. Data from the County Trauma and Emergency Medicine Information System Registry was abstracted from 1/1/10 to 12/31/21. Patient demographics, mechanism of injury (MOI) and time of presentation by season were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis tests and chi-square tests., Results: A total of 30,444 pediatric trauma presentations were included. Both the time of presentation and the MOI differed significantly by season with p < 0.001. Autumn had a higher incidence of pedestrian injuries during hours of 08:00 and 15:0020:00, and sports injuries from 16:00 to 21:00. In the Summer there were more burns between 17:00 and 23:00 and falls from greater than 10 ft after 13:00. The mode of transport used was also different across seasons (p = 0.03), with the use of both air and ground EMS greatest during summer and least during winter. The hours of greatest utilization remained relatively constant for all seasons for air transport (18:00-19:00 h) and ground transport (19:00-20:00 h)., Conclusion: These data demonstrate the significant seasonal and temporal variation within pediatric trauma. Although particulate Fe has a significant impact on human health, atmospheric chemical reactions, air quality, climate change, and ecosystems, there is a lack of long-term continuous hourly observation on particulate Fe in the megacity of Beijing, limiting research on these issues. To address this gap, this study continuously measured hourly concentrations of Fe in PM 2.5 from October 2018 to October 2022 in Beijing. The results indicate an overall decline in Fe concentrations, consistent with previous studies in Beijing. This decline can be attributed to multiple factors, such as reduced coal consumption, restrictions on biomass burning, increased use of clean energy, advanced technologies for industrial emission reduction, and efforts to control fugitive dust. Seasonal variations in Fe concentrations were similar across the various years, with higher mean concentrations in spring, fall, and winter, and lower levels in summer. Daily variations in PM 2.5 -bound Fe concentrations exhibited two peaks, influenced by changes in emission intensity and the evolution of the planetary boundary layer. The solubility of PM 2.5 -bound Fe exhibited a wide range, varying from 4 % to 95 %, surpassing previously reported source-specific values. This variability can be attributed to acid dissolution effects and complexation behaviors. Nonparametric wind regression analysis identified distinct hotspots (higher concentrations) in the northwest wind sector at wind speeds of approximately 5-15 km/h, which are associated with blowing dust and dust storms. Additionally, the potential source contribution function analysis identified high-potential source areas were precisely located in the northwestern, western, and southern regions of Beijing, rather than primarily in the southern areas recorded in a previous study. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widespread in water bodies and have attracted public attention due to their hazards. This study investigated the presence of OPEs in surface water of Taihu Lake from 2012 and 2021-2022. The OPEs concentration was compared ten years ago and ten years later. Water and meteorological parameters were ranked using the random forest (RF) model, and OPEs concentration in lakes was simulated using selected parameters as inputs. The concentration of Σ 7 OPEs was higher ten years ago compared to ten years later. There was no significant seasonal difference in Σ 7 OPEs from 2021-2022, while the concentration of Σ 7 OPEs in 2012 was lower in summer than in other seasons. The spatial distribution of the two interannual Σ 7 OPEs exhibited a decreasing trend from the northwest region. The results of RF importance ranking and redundancy analysis showed that NH 3 -N, TN, TP, water temperature and relative humidity were the most influential factors affecting OPEs concentrations. RF models performed better for TnBP, as indicated by training R and test R values are excellent and relatively low errors. Microplastics are environmental contaminants that have been extensively studied in marine and aquatic environments; terrestrial ecosystems, where most microplastics originate and have the potential to accumulate, typically receive less attention. This study aims to investigate the spatial and temporal soil concentrations of microplastics in a large desert metropolitan area, the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research (CAP-LTER) area. Soil samples from the Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (ESCA) surveys (2005 and 2015) were leveraged to study spatial distributions and the temporal change of microplastic abundances. The temporal soil microplastics data were supplemented by microplastics deposition fluxes in a central location within the area (Tempe, AZ) for a period of one year (Oct 5th, 2020 to Sept 22nd, 2021). Samples were processed and microplastics were counted under an optical microscope to obtain quantitative information of their distribution in soil. Results for the spatial variation of the microplastic abundances in soil samples in Phoenix and the surrounding areas of the Sonoran Desert from 2015 depict microplastics as ubiquitous and abundant in soils (122 to 1299 microplastics/kg) with no clear trends between different locations. Microplastics deposition fluxes show substantial deposition in the local area (71 to 389 microplastics/m 2 /day with an average deposition flux of 178 microplastics/m 2 /day) but the role of resuspension and redistribution by dust storms to deposition may contribute to the unclear spatial trends. Comparison between the 2005 and 2015 surveys show a systematic increase in the abundance of microplastics and a decrease in microplastics size. Micro-Raman spectroscopy identified a variety of plastics including PE, PS, PVC, PA, PES and PP. However, a majority of microplastics remained chemically unidentifiable. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration is an important index of ocean systems. In this study, spatiotemporal variations in DO were analyzed in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGM) for the period of 1992-2017. Temporal variation involves annual, monthly, and seasonal variations. The spatial scope ranged from the sea surface to 1000 m depth. The results show that: (1) DO decreased from 1992 to 2017 with a brief increase; (2) clear seasonal variation characteristics of DO were presented, and the seasonal average DO was relatively low in summer; (3) the monthly average trends of sea surface DO in different years were relatively consistent; and (4) with increasing water depth from seawater surface to 1000 m, the average DO of 1992 to 2017 tended to decrease and then increase. Recent climate change has been shown to alter aspects of forest plant demography, such as growth and mortality, but less attention has been focused on how climate change alters the reproduction of plant populations through time. We hypothesized that the plant seed production would respond to climate change, and that the response would differ according to plant life form and functional traits. We tested this hypothesis by examining climate change from 2005 to 2020 and by determining the temporal trends of seed rain and seed production from plants with different life forms (e.g., herbs, vines, trees, palms) and of tree species with different statures as well as leaf, seed and wood traits during 2014-2020. We also tested the correlation between meteorological variables and time series of seed rain using cross correlation analysis. We found increasing wetness (lower vapor pressure deficit) through time but with decreasing minimum relative humidity, which is a pattern consistent with trends seen in many other parts of the world. During the study period, seed production of shrubs and relative contribution of woody vines to total seed rain decreased, while relative contribution of palms to total seed rain and tree species with more conservative leaf traits increased their contribution to total seed rain. Overall, these trends were well explained by the trends of meteorological variables and the responses of these life forms to climate change in previous studies. Additionally, the increasingly conservative leaf traits were also consistent with shifts in traits following recovery from disturbance. Our results suggest that a trait-based approach may help to unveil trends that are not readily apparent by examining seed counts alone. Spatial patterns and temporal trends of the butyltin compounds tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) were investigated in a set of sediment samples collected along the SW Portuguese continental shelf. This region did not reach the Good Environmental Status (GES) in accordance with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) during a first evaluation carried out in 2012. Overall, MBT and DBT were the predominant organotin species detected, but high concentrations of TBT were found in and around disposal sites for dredge sludge derived from the dredging in navigation channels, harbours, and shipyard facilities of the Tagus and Sado estuaries. Although Portuguese regulations for monitoring sediment quality in relation to dredging activities consider only PAH, PCB and HCB, they also dictate that other organic contaminants such as butyltin compounds (BTs) should be monitored if suspicion of high values exists, but no action limits are defined for these (MAOTDR, 2007). Without action limits, the monitoring recommendation given in the regulations is not put into practice. Considering their toxicity, BT derivates should be integrated in the legislation, because they represent an environmental threat in the relocation of dredged material, especially when derived from harbour and shipyards areas. Based on this study, we recommend giving more attention to the amounts and impacts of BTs in sediments at dredged material disposal sites (DMDS) and their surroundings. Or even better, in order to be more efficient, monitoring should be done at the source of the dredged materials and not at the sink. To examine the diversity and community structure of epifauna along latitudinal and depth gradients in China seas and its temporal variations over nearly 60 years, a total of 61,424 records of epifauna were compiled. Latitudinal gradients of γ-diversity from 28 to 37°N showed two peaks of increase in 1958-1960; however, only one peak was observed near 28°N in 2000-2015. Along depth gradient, the peak of species richness shifted about 10 m deeper from about 50 m in 1958-1960 to about 60 m in 2000-2015. Values of α-diversity were higher in 2000-2015 than that in 1958-1960 in latitudes from 30 to 33°N and in depth from 50 to 75 m, respectively. Epifaunal communities were distributed basically along latitudinal and depth gradients. Sports physiological properties of ten sand or sand-mineral outdoor arenas, five with vertical drainage systems and five with an ebb and flow like system were assessed over a period of 8 weeks. For each arena, the riding zone was spatially delineated, nine locations at medium to intensely used zones were selected by simple random sampling and used along the whole measurement period. A total of 72 values for the dynamic deflection modulus (Evd), attenuation (s/v), settlement (s) and moisture content (Vol %) were analyzed for each arena. A novel technique to analyze the settlement curves of the light weight deflectometer (LWD) to describe reactivity of the footing surface was introduced. Statistical testing was done by linear mixed models. Three of the five arenas with a vertical watering system were judged to be hard (Evd > 20 MN/m 2 ), whereas all five arenas with an ebb and flow like watering systems were medium hard (Evd = 10-20 MN/m 2 ) over the entire 8 weeks. Significant (P < .01) temporal differences in Evd, s/v and moisture were demonstrated for both watering systems; however, the spatial and temporal variations were much lower with the ebb-flow system. Temporal consistency in the parameters over the test weeks appeared to be a criterion for stability of the arena surface. To prevent the fast spread of COVID-19, worldwide restrictions have been put in place, leading to a reduction in emissions from most anthropogenic sources. In this study, the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on elemental (EC) and organic (OC) carbon was explored at a European rural background site combining different approaches: - "Horizontal approach (HA)" consists of comparing concentrations of pollutants measured at 4 m a.g.l. during pre-COVID period (2017-2019) to those measured during COVID period (2020-2021); - "Vertical approach (VA)" consists of inspecting the relationship between OC and EC measured at 4 m and those on top (230 m) of a 250 m-tall tower in Czech Republic. The HA showed that the lockdowns did not systematically result in lower concentrations of both carbonaceous fractions unlike NO 2 (25 to 36 % lower) and SO 2 (10 to 45 % lower). EC was generally lower during the lockdowns (up to 35 %), likely attributed to the traffic restrictions whereas increased OC (up to 50 %) could be attributed to enhanced emissions from the domestic heating and biomass burning during this stay-home period, but also to the enhanced concentration of SOC (up to 98 %). EC and OC were generally higher at 4 m suggesting a greater influence of local sources near the surface. Interestingly, the VA revealed a significantly enhanced correlation between EC and OC measured at 4 m and those at 230 m (R values up to 0.88 and 0.70 during lockdown 1 and 2, respectively), suggesting a stronger influence of aged and long distance transported aerosols during the lockdowns. This study reveals that lockdowns did not necessarily affect aerosol absolute concentrations but it certainly influenced their vertical distribution. Background: There is limited evidence of temporal changes in the association between air temperature and the risk of cause-specific cardiovascular [CVD] and respiratory [RD] mortality., Method: We explored temporal variations in the association between short-term exposures to air temperature and non-accidental and cause-specific CVD and RD mortality in the 15 largest German cities over 24 years (1993-2016) using time-stratified time series analysis. We applied location-specific confounder-adjusted Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear models with a lag period of 14 days to estimate the temperature-mortality associations. We then pooled the estimates by a multivariate meta-analytical model. We analysed the whole study period and the periods 1993-2004 and 2005-16, separately. We also carried out age- and sex-stratified analysis. Cold and heat effects are reported as relative risk [RR] at the 1st and the 99th temperature percentile, relative to the 25th and the 75th percentile, respectively., Result: We analysed a total of 3,159,292 non-accidental, 1,063,198 CVD and 183,027 RD deaths. Cold-related RR for CVD mortality was seen to rise consistently over time from 1.04 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.02, 1.06) in the period 1993-2004 to 1.10 (95% CI 1.09, 1.11) in the period 2005-16. A similar increase in cold-related RR was also observed for RD mortality with risk increasing from 0.99 (95% CI 0.96, 1.03) to 1.07 (95% CI 1.03, 1.10). Cold-related ischemic, cerebrovascular, and heart failure mortality risk were seen to be increasing over time. Similarly, COPD, the commonly speculated driver of heat-related RD mortality was found to have a constant heat-related risk over time. Males were increasingly vulnerable to cold with time for all causes of death. Females showed increasing sensitivity to cold for CVD mortality. Our results indicated a significant increased cold and heat vulnerability of the youngest age-groups (<64) to non-accidental and RD mortality, respectively. Similarly, the older age group (>65) were found to have significantly increased susceptibility to cold for CVD mortality., Conclusion: We found evidence of rising population susceptibility to both heat- and cold-related CVD and RD mortality risk from 1993 to 2016. Coastal ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to terrestrial inputs from human-impacted areas. The prevalence of wastewater treatment plants, unable to remove contaminants such as pharmaceuticals (PhACs), leads to their continuous input into the marine environment. In this paper, the seasonal occurrence of PhACs in a semi-confined coastal lagoon (the Mar Menor, south-eastern Spain) was studied during 2018 and 2019 by evaluating their presence in seawater and sediments, and their bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms. Temporal variation in the contamination levels was evaluated by comparison to a previous study carried out between 2010 and 2011 before the cessation of permanent discharges of treated wastewater into the lagoon. The impact of a flash flood event (September 2019) on PhACs pollution was also assessed. A total of seven compounds (out of 69 PhACs analysed) were found in seawater during 2018-2019, with a limited detection frequency (<33%) and concentrations (up to 11 ng/L of clarithromycin). Only carbamazepine was found in sediments (ND-1.2 ng/g dw), suggesting an improved environmental quality in comparison to 2010-2011 (when 24 and 13 compounds were detected in seawater and sediments, respectively). However, the biomonitoring of fish and molluscs showed a still remarkable accumulation of analgesic/anti-inflammatory drugs, lipid regulators, psychiatric drugs and β-blocking agents, albeit not higher than in 2010. The flash flood event from 2019 increased the prevalence of PhACs in the lagoon, compared to the 2018-2019 sampling campaigns, especially in the upper water layer. After the flash flood the antibiotics clarithromycin and sulfapyridine yielded the highest concentrations ever reported in the lagoon (297 and 145 ng/L, respectively), alongside azithromycin in 2011 (155 ng/L). "The Gully", situated off Nova Scotia, Canada, is the largest submarine canyon in the western North Atlantic. This unique oceanographic feature, which became a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2004, is rich in marine biodiversity and is part of the critical habitat of Endangered northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus). To understand the potential impact of plastic pollution in the MPA and on this Endangered cetacean, we evaluated trends over time in the abundance and composition of plastics and compared these to the stomach contents of recently stranded northern bottlenose whales. From the 1990s-2010s, the median abundance of micro-sized (<5 mm) and small plastics (5 mm-2.5 cm) increased significantly, while the median abundance of large plastics (>2.5 cm) decreased significantly. Plastic abundance from the 2010s for micro-sized and small plastics varied from 5586-438 196 particles km -2 , higher than previously measured estimates for surrounding offshore areas. Polymers identified using FTIR spectroscopy included polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate polyester, nylon, alkyds (paint), and natural and semi-synthetic cellulosic fibers. The abundance of large debris ranged from 0 to 108.6 items km -2 and consisted of plastic sheets and bags, food wrappers and containers, rope, fishing buoys, and small plastic fragments. Whale stomach contents contained fragments of fishing nets, ropes, bottle caps, cups, food wrappers, smaller plastic fragments, fibers, and paint flakes, consistent with the composition and character of items collected from their critical habitat. Despite being far from centres of human population, the unique oceanographic features of The Gully (i.e. currents and bathymetric complexity) may concentrate plastic debris, increasing exposure rates of whales to plastic pollution. The deep Peru Basin is characterised by a unique abyssal scavenging community featuring large numbers of hermit crabs (Probeebei mirabilis, Decapoda, Crustacea). These are atypical hermit crabs, not carrying a shell, but on some occasions carrying an anemone (Actiniaria). The reason why some hermit crabs carry or not carry anemones is thought to be indicative of a changed environment, outweighing the cost/benefit of their relationship. Here we present the temporal variation of abundances of P. mirabilis with and without anemones, spanning more than two decades, following a benthic impact experiment. An overall decrease in hermit crab densities was observed, most noticeable and significant after 26 years and characterised by a loss of Actiniaria on the Probeebei mirabilis' pleon. Whether this is a delayed response to the benthic impact experiment carried out 26 years' prior or a natural variation in the population remains to be corroborated by an extension of the time-series. Antibiotics are prevalent in the aquatic environment as emerging contaminants. Their knowledge of seasonal ice-sealed reservoirs, however, is limited. The occurrence, temporal variation, and prioritization of twenty-three antibiotics in Shitoukoumen Reservoir during its ice-free and ice-sealed periods, as well as the source apportionment of the high-priority antibiotics, were investigated in this study. The results showed that florfenicol was the dominant antibiotic in Shitoukoumen Reservoir, with different median concentrations of 75.0 ± 6.5 ng L -1 and 7.0 ± 1.7 ng kg -1 in the water and ice, respectively. The concentrations of florfenicol, sulfaguanidine, and sulfamonomethoxine in the water of the reservoir water varied over time, but their monthly mass loads from inflow rivers were similar during ice-free and ice-sealed periods. This indicated that other factors, such as aquacultural practice, non-point source rain runoff, and the blocking effect of ice, determined the temporal variations of the three antibiotics and resulted in their relatively high concentrations during the ice-free period. High-priority antibiotics included erythromycin, florfenicol, ofloxacin, sarafloxacin, sulfaquinoxaline, thiamphenicol, and tylosin. Aquaculture was the primary source of high-priority antibiotics, accounting for 67.3 % and 59.4 % of the total high-priority antibiotic concentrations during ice-free and ice-sealed periods, respectively. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic chemicals that have been globally distributed. Biological time series data suggest variation in temporal PFAS concentrations due to regulations and the phase-out of multiple PFAS analytes. Nonetheless, biomonitoring temporal trends of PFAS concentrations in raptors has only been done sporadically in Europe at a national scale. In the present study, we examined the concentrations of 28 PFAS in livers of common buzzard (Buteo buteo) collected in Belgium in the period 2000-2005 and in 2021. Despite the regulations and phase-out, the ΣPFAS concentrations remained similar in the livers over the past 20 years. However, over time the abundance of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), dominant in livers collected in 2000-2005, to the ΣPFAS concentration decreased from 46% to 27%, whereas the abundance of perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA), dominant in 2021, increased from 19% to 43%. The PFOS concentrations in the present study did not exceed the Toxicity Reference Values (TRVs), which were determined in liver on the characteristics of an avian top predator. The microbial communities are of high importance to the restoration of ecological function and plant health, while little information about the influence of exogenous pollutants on the resilience and temporal dynamics of root microbial communities is available. In this study, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of exogenous phenanthrene in terms of time and pollution disturbance on the wheat root-associated microbial communities. It was found that a high phenanthrene degradation rate of 86 % was achieved in the rhizosphere of wheat after the first-week planting. Compared to phenanthrene pollution, temporal changes had more significant impacts on the wheat root microbial communities. Obvious change of microbes influenced by PHE had been revealed at the initial three-week planting even most of PHE has been degraded, and the enriched microbes in the rhizosphere were affiliated to Altererythrobacter, Massilia, Mycobacterium, Ramlibacter, Sphingobium, Novosphingobium and Romboutsia. However, at the later stage after four-week incubation, the wheat root-associated microbial communities gradually recovered to the state without pollution. To better understand the change characteristics and reduction in organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ) driven by the most stringent clean air policies and pandemic-related lockdown measures in China, a comprehensive field campaign was performed to measure the carbonaceous components in PM 2.5 on an hourly basis via harmonized analytical methods in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and its surrounding region (including 2 + 26 cities) from January 1 to December 31, 2020. The results indicated that the annual average concentrations of OC and EC reached as low as 6.6 ± 5.7 and 1.8 ± 1.9 μg/m 3 , respectively, lower than those obtained in previous studies, which could be attributed to the effectiveness of the Clean Air Action Plan and the impact of the COVID-19-related lockdown measures implemented in China. Marked seasonal and diurnal variations in OC and EC were observed in the 2 + 26 cities. Significant correlations (p < 0.001) between OC and EC were found. The annual average secondary OC levels level ranged from 1.8-5.4 μg/m 3 , accounting for 37.7-73.0% of the OC concentration in the 2 + 26 cities estimated with the minimum R squared method. Based on Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) algorithms, the light extinction contribution of carbonaceous PM to the total amount reached 21.1% and 26.0% on average, suggesting that carbonaceous PM played a less important role in visibility impairment than did the other chemical components in PM 2.5 . This study is expected to provide an important real-time dataset and in-depth analysis of the significant reduction in OC and EC in PM 2.5 driven by both the Clean Air Action Plan and COVID-19-related lockdown policies over the past few years, which could represent an insightful comparative case study for other developing countries/regions facing similar carbonaceous PM pollution., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Reforestation has been commonly adopted to increase the mangrove areas lost due to developments. A diverse phytoplankton community is critical to mangrove ecosystem functions; however, its compositions in planted mangrove habitats have seldom been reported. The present study, based on the temporal and spatial variations of phytoplankton community and water parameters, evaluated their relationships in a 20-year old artificially planted fringing mangrove in South China. Thirty-one phytoplankton taxa were identified from tidal water collected from three sites along a planted mangrove shoreline: within, and at the edge of mangroves, and at bare shoreline without mangroves. In all three sites, Bacillariophyta (diatom) was the most abundant phylum, dominated by Navicula and Nitzschia at 9.82-83.76% and 2.57-33.97%, respectively. The overall diversity ranged between 0.41 and 1.94. The temporal variations of phytoplankton and water parameters were more obvious than site differences. Higher phytoplankton diversity was found in summer, with increased green algae and cyanobacteria abundance accompanied by riverine discharge. There was site-specific dominance in some phyla between June and January, noticeably Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, and Euglenophyta. A potential toxic dinoflagellate Peridinium sp. was identified during fall and winter, serving as a warning to probable harmful bloom events. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed the abundance of major phytoplankton taxa significantly related to water physiochemical parameters, especially nitrate, ammonium, total phosphorous and orthophosphate. The present study suggests that mangrove vegetation may influence water quality and shape phytoplankton composition, but temporal differences were more significant. Compared with the protected natural mangroves in the National Nature Reserve nearby, this planted fringing mangrove habitat not only had lower nutrients, especially total nitrogen in tidal water, but also had different dominant phytoplankton species and lower species richness. Background: The exacerbation of asthma and respiratory allergies has been associated with exposure to aeroallergens such as pollen. Within an urban area, tree cover, level of urbanization, atmospheric conditions, and the number of source plants can influence spatiotemporal variations in outdoor pollen concentrations., Objective: We analyze weekly pollen measurements made between March and October 2018 over 17 sites in Toronto, Canada. The main goals are: to estimate the concentration of different types of pollen across the season; estimate the association, if any, between pollen concentration and environmental variables, and provide a spatiotemporal surface of concentration of different types of pollen across the weeks in the studied period., Methods: We propose an extension of the land-use regression model to account for the temporal variation of pollen levels and the high number of measurements equal to zero. Inference is performed under the Bayesian framework, and uncertainty of predicted values is naturally obtained through the posterior predictive distribution., Results: Tree pollen was positively associated with commercial areas and tree cover, and negatively associated with grass cover. Both grass and weed pollen were positively associated with industrial areas and TC brightness and negatively associated with the northing coordinate. The total pollen was associated with a combination of these environmental factors. A considerable portion of marine litter pollutes the world's coastlines. Its accumulation on beaches represents the product of deposition and retention, processes which are not well understood. A mark-recapture study was performed with a two-week sampling interval at three sites in Lofoten, Norway. Deposition and retention vary over relatively small spatial scales (approx. 13 km radius). No correlation was found among sites in the timing of high and low deposition events, suggesting these are governed by local factors. Contrastingly, the correlation in the timing of high and low retention events was generally stronger among sites, suggesting these may be affected by regional factors. The results underline the importance of customising cleanup frequency for different beaches as spatiotemporal variation in the relative importance of deposition and retention dictate the optimal frequency for maximal removal of litter from circulation in the local marine environment, which cannot be discerned from accumulation (i.e., standing stock) alone., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Household and personal care products (HPCPs) are a kind of contaminants closely related to daily life, capturing worldwide concern. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt focusing on the spatiotemporal occurrence and mixture risk of HPCPs in the waters from rivers to Laizhou Bay. Nine HPCPs were quantitated in 216 water samples gathered from Laizhou Bay and its adjacent rivers in 2018, 2019, and 2021 to reveal the spatiotemporal occurrence and mixture ecological risks in Laizhou Bay. Eight HPCPs were detected with detection frequencies ranging from 74% to 100%. The total concentrations were in the ranges 105-721 ng L -1 in river water and 51.3-332 ng L -1 in seawater. The HPCPs were dominated by p-hydroxybenzoic and triclosan, which together contributed over 75% of the total HPCPs. The average level of the total HPCP concentration in the summer of 2018 (96.1 ng L -1 ) was slightly exceed that in the spring of 2019 (91.6 ng L -1 ), which is associated with the higher usage of HPCPs and enhanced tourism during summer. However, the highest total concentrations were found in spring of 2021 (124 ng L -1 in average), which was attribute to a higher level of methylparaben, a predominant paraben used as preservatives in commercial pharmaceuticals of China. Influenced by riverine inputs and ocean currents, higher HPCP concentrations in Laizhou Bay were found nearby the estuary of Yellow River and the southern part of the bay. Triclosan should be given constant concern considering its medium to high risks (RQ > 0.1) in nearly 80% of the water samples. The cumulative risk assessment in two approaches revealed that HPCP mixtures generally elicit medium or high risk to three main aquatic taxa. Soil respiration (R S ) is affected by many factors and shows significant diurnal and seasonal changes at different spatial and temporal scales. However, in a semi-arid steppe, the mechanism of the dynamic influence of environmental factors on R S is not clear, and the effect of subtle changes of soil water on R S under drought stress is yet to be explored. Therefore, Xilin River Basin, was the study area and a hydrological gradient on the four ecosystems for R S and hydrometeorological monitoring was selected. We proposed the use of dynamic sunrise and sunset time to distinguish day from night and determine related statistics. Additionally, we analyzed the temporal variation of R S and its response process and mechanism for hydrometeorological factors during the growing season and at daily scales. Further, we quantitatively simulated the R S of 594 scenarios in different growing season stages, ecosystems, and precipitation patterns. Results showed that: (1) in the hydrological gradient belt, different ecosystems exhibited the same trend but different characteristics of R S regulation. From May to November 2020, R S was 2.34-3.89, 1.89-5.97, 1.90-5.27 and 2.29-3.45 gC m -2 day -1 for the four ecosystems. (2) The use of dynamic sunrise and sunset time to distinguish day and night can more accurately describe the statistical value of each variable, which exhibits remarkable feasibility in daily scale research. (3) The changes in R S were adequately explained by temperature at various time scales, and the photosynthetically active radiation was positively correlated with R S at the daily scale. The special soil water content (M S ) condition in the study area was not sufficient to explain R S . The influence of short-term (daily) variation in environmental conditions (rainfall, wind, tide, river flow) on debris accumulation was examined on two beaches at an estuarine outlet. Sampling occurred over 60 consecutive days along two sections (Internal Area, IA; and External Area, EA) of the Paranaguá Estuary Complex's southern outlet, in Paraná, southern Brazil. The IA is sheltered from direct wave action, whereas the EA is more exposed to wave and wind action from the open ocean. The IA accounted for 71% of the total debris, while the EA accounted for 29%. Debris abundance was highest after intermediate bouts of rainfall, although river flow only affected debris accumulation in the IA. Wind and tide influenced accumulation differently across sites. These results highlight the importance of short-term variation in the accumulation of marine debris on sandy beaches, which should be considered when designing and monitoring assessment programs and removal strategies., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
