This study investigates differences in physical activity between weekdays and weekend days, and its associations with sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics in the U.S population using the NHANES 2011–2014 data. Physical activity was measured using ActiGraph GT3X+. Raw acceleration data were converted to Monitor-Independent Movement Summary units (MIMS-units) that account for inter-device variability and eliminates non-human movement. The daily MIMS-units were averaged for weekdays and weekend days. Demographic characteristics were self-reported. Height and weight were objectively measured. The sample included 6611 adults aged ≥ 20 years and 3520 children aged between 6 and 19 years. The results show that more MIMS-units were registered on weekdays compared to weekend days for adults (652, 95%CI = 533, 770) and children (889, 95%CI = 702, 1076). Factors associated with physical activity in adults (gender, age, marital status, ethnicity, education level, and weight status) were similar for weekdays and weekend days. In children, physical activity was associated with ethnicity, weight status, and age. The level of differences in physical activity between weekdays and weekend days among adults was larger for men, Hispanic Americans, and those with lower education levels. Differences among children were similar across subgroups, except for those aged 16–19 years who had smaller level of difference compared to those aged 12–15 years. In conclusion, adults and children were more active on weekdays than weekend days. The effects of structured days (i.e., weekdays) on physical activity appeared to be similar across most child subgroups but more heterogeneous for adult subgroups. Interventions increasing physical activity opportunities during weekend days are warranted.

Abstract Background: Disparities in health perspectives between Indigenous and non‐Indigenous populations are major concerns in many of the world's well‐developed nations. Indigenous populations are largely less healthy, more prone to chronic diseases, and have an earlier overall mortality than non‐Indigenous populations. Low levels of physical activity (PA) contribute to the high levels of disease in Indigenous Australians. Method: Qualitative analysis of structured one‐on‐one interviews discussing PA in a regional setting. Participants were 12 Indigenous Australian adults, and 12 non‐Indigenous Australian adults matched on age, sex, and basketball division. Results: Most participants reported engaging in regular exercise; however, the Indigenous group reported more barriers to PA. These factors included cost, time management and environmental constraints. The physical facilitators identified by our Indigenous sample included social support, intrinsic motivation and role modelling. Conclusion: Findings describe individual and external factors that promote or constraint PA as reported by Indigenous Australian adults. Results indicate that Indigenous people face specific barriers to PA when compared to a non‐Indigenous sample. Implications for public health: This study is the first to compare the perspective of Indigenous Australians to a matched group of non‐Indigenous Australians and provides useful knowledge to develop public health programs based on culturally sensitive data.

In rodents, a competent skin barrier to water loss is formed within 2 or 3 days prior to birth. Acquisition of barrier function during rat gestation correlates with the formation of a stratum corneum enriched in ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids (Aszterbaum, M., G. K. Menon, K. R. Feingold, and M. L. Williams. 1992. Ontogeny of the epidermal barrier to water loss in the rat: correlation of function with stratum corneum structure and lipid content. Pediatr. Res. 31: 308–317). We analyzed the formation and epidermal localization of glucosylceramides during embryonic skin barrier development in Balb/c mice. Using immunohistochemistry, epidermal glucosylceramides were hardly detectable 3 days prior to birth. After further 24 h of gestation the level of glucosylceramides was maximal and decreased with increasing gestational age. In parallel, glucosylceramides were targeted to the apical side of the outermost granular keratinocyte layer. A spectrum of five distinct epidermal ceramides was present 2 days prior to birth. With ongoing gestation the composition of the ceramide fraction changed markedly. Most importantly, the level of ω-hydroxylated acylceramides decreased paralleled by the formation of the corneocyte lipid envelope. This structure consists of ω-hydroxylated ceramides and fatty acids bound to surface proteins of the corneocytes.The covalent attachment of ceramides or glucosylceramides correlated with the maturation of the stratum corneum and might contribute to its chemical and enzymatic resistance.
