Understanding interactions between viruses and their hosts is conducive to enabling better application of viruses as biocontrol agents. Certain viruses carried by parasitic wasps enhance the parasitic efficiency of wasp-larvae by protecting them against the immune system of their Lepidopteran host. However, the relationship between prey pests and viruses found in predatory natural enemies remains unclear. Herein, we report the interaction between Arma chinensis virus-1 (AcV-1), originally isolated from a predatory natural enemy, Arma chinensis (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and one of its prey species, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The results showed that the AcV-1 virus appeared harmful to the novel host S. frugiperda by inhibiting larval diet consumption and increasing pupal mortality. Meanwhile, sequencing data indicated that the virus altered the gene expression profiles of S. frugiperda. KEGG analysis showed that the proteasome and phagosome pathways related to protein degradation and immune response were significantly enriched. Although the expression levels of digestive enzyme genes did not change significantly, the total protease activity of AcV-1 virus-positive individuals was significantly decreased, suggesting that the virus inhibited diet consumption of S. frugiperda via the down-regulation of digestive enzyme activities. These results indicate that a virus initially isolated in a predatory natural enemy can decrease the fitness of its prey species. The virus was found to impact the host proteasome and phagosome pathways related to protein degradation and immunity, providing a potential mechanism to enhance controlling efficiency.

Climate change is profoundly impacting Himalayan ecosystems, with substantial challenges to keystone species like Rhododendron arboreum. Present study attempted to investigate R. arboreum response to varying environmental conditions at altitudes between 1500 and 3000 m in three western Himalayan temperate forests, through evaluating plant functional traits. IPCC's internal vulnerability framework, characterised by two dimensions: sensitivity and adaptive capacity was applied. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was applied to elucidate the relationship between traits and the dimensions. Sensitivity was analysed using sub components like Light Harvesting, Nutrient and Gas Fluxes, while adaptive capacity by Resource Efficiency, Architecture and Defence, Resource Limitation and Resource Facilitation. The results revealed high sensitivity (0.64) in moru oak forests, high adaptive capacity in moist temperate deciduous forests (0.59), and high vulnerability in ban oak forests (0.54). SEM Models for sensitivity and adaptive capacity were significant. Sensitivity exhibited positively significant influence of Nutrient and Gas Fluxes with path coefficient of 1.07 and 0.80, respectively. Adaptive capacity showed a positive relationship with the Resource Limitation and Architecture and Defence, while a negative relationship with Resource Facilitation, with a path coefficient of 0.94, 0.42 and −0.11, respectively. Overall, the vulnerability of R. arboreum to environmental changes is shaped by a complex interplay of physical characteristics (morphological), biological functions (physiological), and interactions with surroundings (ecological). These insights underscore the importance of understanding trait vulnerability dynamics for effective forest management strategies amidst changing environmental conditions.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a common form of light pollution worldwide, and the intensity, timing, duration, and wavelength of light exposure can affect biological rhythms, which can lead to metabolic, reproductive, and immune dysfunctions and consequently, host–pathogen interactions. Insect vector-borne diseases are a global problem that needs to be addressed, and ALAN plays an important role in disease transmission by affecting the habits and physiological functions of vector organisms. In this work, we describe the mechanisms by which ALAN affects host physiology and biochemistry, host–parasite interactions, and vector-borne viruses and propose preventive measures for related infectious diseases to minimize the effects of artificial light on vector-borne diseases.

Assessing the risk of human pathogens in the environment is crucial for controlling the spread of diseases and safeguarding human health. However, conducting a thorough assessment of low-abundance pathogens in highly complex environmental microbial communities remains challenging. This study compiled a comprehensive catalog of 247 human-pathogenic bacterial taxa from global biosafety agencies and identified more than 78 million genome-specific markers (GSMs) from their 17,470 sequenced genomes. Subsequently, we analyzed these pathogens’ types, abundance, and diversity within 474 shotgun metagenomic sequences obtained from diverse environmental sources. The results revealed that among the four habitats studied (air, water, soil, and sediment), the detection rate, diversity, and abundance of detectable pathogens in the air all exceeded those in the other three habitats. Air, sediment, and water environments exhibited identical dominant taxa, indicating that these human pathogens may have unique environmental vectors for their transmission or survival. Furthermore, we observed the impact of human activities on the environmental risk posed by these pathogens, where greater amounts of human activities significantly increased the abundance of human pathogenic bacteria, especially in water and air. These findings have remarkable implications for the environmental risk assessment of human pathogens, providing valuable insights into their presence and distribution across different habitats.

Background: Patient-ventilator asynchrony (PVA) frequently occurs in mechanically ventilated patients within the ICU and has the potential for harm. Depending solely on the health care team cannot accurately and promptly identify PVA. To address this issue, our team has developed a cloud-based platform for monitoring mechanical ventilation (MV), comprising the PVA-RemoteMonitor system and the 24-h MV analysis report. We conducted a survey to evaluate physicians' satisfaction and acceptance of the platform in 14 ICUs. Methods: Data from medical records, clinical information systems, and ventilators were uploaded to the cloud platform and underwent data processing. The data were analyzed to monitor PVA and displayed in the front-end. The 24-h analysis report for MV was generated for clinical reference. Critical care physicians in 14 hospitals' ICUs that involved in the platform participated in a questionnaire survey, among whom 10 physicians were interviewed to investigate physicians’ acceptance and opinions of this system. Results: The PVA-RemoteMonitor system exhibited a high level of specificity in detecting flow insufficiency, premature cycle, delayed cycle, reverse trigger, auto trigger, and overshoot, with sensitivities of 90.31 %, 98.76 %, 99.75 %, 99.97 %, 100 %, and 99.69 %, respectively. The 24-h analysis report supplied essential data about PVA and respiratory mechanics. 86.2 % (75/87) of physicians supported the application of this platform. Conclusions: The PVA-RemoteMonitor system accurately identified PVA, and the MV analysis report provided guidance in controlling PVA. Our platform can effectively assist ICU physicians in the management of ventilated patients.

Background: To assess the alterations in gingival thickness and the occurrence gingival recession subsequent to orthodontic-orthognathic treatment of mandibular incisors in skeletal Class III and identify risk factors associated with gingival recession. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled 33 patients exhibiting skeletal Class III malocclusion, totaling 131 mandibular incisors, who were undergoing orthodontic- orthognathic treatment that did not involve extraction of mandibular teeth. The subjects were categorized into surgery group (S; n = 17; ANB = −5.55 ± 3.26; IOFTN = 4.60 ± 0.51, scores ranging: 4.3–5.3) and non-surgery group (NS; n = 16; ANB = −3.00 ± 4.08; IOFTN = 4.63 ± 0.50, scores ranging: 4.3–5.4), based on if they had history of Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics surgery (S) or not (NS). Patients in S group received orthognathic surgery about 1–1.5 years after Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics surgery. Alterations in gingival thickness, gingival recession, and keratinized gingival width were compared before and after orthodontic-orthognathic treatment. Logistic regression analysis was used to construct a gingival recession prediction model and draw nomograms. Results: After orthodontic-orthognathic treatment, the gingival thickness and keratinized gingival width in NS group decreased by 0.15 ± 0.21 mm and 0.74 ± 0.91 mm, whereas those in the S group increased by 0.32 ± 0.28 mm and 2.09 ± 1.51 mm (P

The intricate crosstalk between long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and epigenetic modifications such as chromatin/histone methylation and acetylation offer new perspectives on the pathogenesis and treatment of kidney diseases. lncRNAs, a class of transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides with no protein-coding potential, are now recognized as key regulatory molecules influencing gene expression through diverse mechanisms. They modulate the epigenetic modifications by recruiting or blocking enzymes responsible for adding or removing methyl or acetyl groups, such as DNA, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) and histone methylation and acetylation, subsequently altering chromatin structure and accessibility. In kidney diseases such as acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetic nephropathy (DN), glomerulonephritis (GN), and renal cell carcinoma (RCC), aberrant patterns of DNA/RNA/histone methylation and acetylation have been associated with disease onset and progression, revealing a complex interplay with lncRNA dynamics. Recent studies have highlighted how lncRNAs can impact renal pathology by affecting the expression and function of key genes involved in cell cycle control, fibrosis, and inflammatory responses. This review will separately address the roles of lncRNAs and epigenetic modifications in renal diseases, with a particular emphasis on elucidating the bidirectional regulatory effects and underlying mechanisms of lncRNAs in conjunction with DNA/RNA/histone methylation and acetylation, in addition to the potential exacerbating or renoprotective effects in renal pathologies. Understanding the reciprocal relationships between lncRNAs and epigenetic modifications will not only shed light on the molecular underpinnings of renal pathologies but also present new avenues for therapeutic interventions and biomarker development, advancing precision medicine in nephrology.

Lavender, an aromatic plant with a history dating back to ancient Egypt and Greece, is consumed because of its diverse pharmacological properties, including sedation, sleep aid, and antidepressant effects. However, the mechanisms underlying these antidepressant properties remain unclear. In this study, we explored the impact of lavender essential oil (LEO) inhalation on the diversity of gut microbiota, metabolites, and differential gene expression in the hippocampus of alcohol-withdrawn depressive rats. Additionally, we examined alterations in the hippocampal transient receptor potential (TRP) channel-mediated inflammatory regulation within the brain-gut axis of depressive rats. The results demonstrated a significant decrease in sucrose preference, diminished activity in the central zone of the open field test, and prolonged immobility time in the forced swim test in alcohol-withdrawn depressive rats, indicating the amelioration of depressive states following lavender essential oil inhalation. 16 S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed a significant reduction in Bacteroidota and Muribaculaceae in the gut of alcohol-withdrawn depressive rats, whereas lavender essential oil significantly increased the relative abundance of Muribaculaceae and other bacterial species. Metabolomic analysis identified 646 distinct metabolites as highly correlated biomarkers between the model and lavender essential oil groups. Furthermore, lavender essential oil inhalation significantly attenuated hippocampal inflammatory factors IL-2, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α. This study identified elevated expression of Trpv4 and Calml4 in the hippocampal region of alcohol-withdrawn depressed rats and showed that lavender essential oil inhalation regulated aberrantly expressed genes. Our research suggests that lavender essential oil downregulates Trpv4, modulates inflammatory factors, and alleviates depressive-like behavior in alcohol withdrawal rats.

Emerging research suggests a potential association of progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with alterations in synaptic currents and mitochondrial dynamics. However, the specific associations between these pathological changes remain unclear. In this study, we utilized Aβ42-induced AD rats and primary neural cells as in vivo and in vitro models. The investigations included behavioural tests, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis, Nissl staining, thioflavin-S staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Golgi-Cox staining, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), immunofluorescence staining, proteomics, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) detection, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) assessment, mitochondrial morphology analysis, electrophysiological studies, Western blotting, and molecular docking. The results revealed changes in synaptic currents, mitophagy, and mitochondrial dynamics in the AD models. Remarkably, intervention with Dengzhan Shengmai (DZSM) capsules emerged as a pivotal element in this investigation. Aβ42-induced synaptic dysfunction was significantly mitigated by DZSM intervention, which notably amplified the frequency and amplitude of synaptic transmission. The cognitive impairment observed in AD rats was ameliorated and accompanied by robust protection against structural damage in key brain regions, including the hippocampal CA3, primary cingular cortex, prelimbic system, and dysgranular insular cortex. DZSM intervention led to increased IDE levels, augmented long-term potential (LTP) amplitude, and enhanced dendritic spine density and length. Moreover, DZSM intervention led to favourable changes in mitochondrial parameters, including ROS expression, MMP and ATP contents, and mitochondrial morphology. In conclusion, our findings delved into the realm of altered synaptic currents, mitophagy, and mitochondrial dynamics in AD, concurrently highlighting the therapeutic potential of DZSM intervention.

Polymorphic phase transition in metallic materials under high pressure is a critical aspect of dynamic properties and has been attracting a great interest. Despite the extensive researches have been made on understanding of this phase transition in traditional single-principal element alloys, little is known about the phase transition in recently emergent multi-principal medium and high entropy alloys, especially compressed under high strain rates. In this work, based on molecular dynamic simulations, three impact loading strategies with distinct loading paths, such as single-shock, double-shock and ramp-wave loading are carried out on the single crystalline CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) to investigate the phase transition under high strain-rate compression. Careful characterizations show that the phase transition of CoCrNi MEA is loading-path dependent, as evidenced by the significant differences in macroscopic pressure evolution and microscopic structural phase transition among the samples under various thermodynamic paths. An intriguing pressure “overshoot” is found and demonstrated as the characteristic of the critical structural phase transition from face-centered cubic (FCC) structure to hexagonal-close-packed (HCP) structure mediated by body-centered cubic (BCC) like clusters. We show that such loading-path dependence is attributed to the strain rate and temperature rise in the loading process, which control the evolution of microstructure and deformation field. The inherent correlation between the atomistic process of phase transition and loading strategies results in polymorphic phase transition under high strain rates. These findings shed new light on the nature of impact phase transition of multi-principal alloys.

Peach cultivation holds a significant economic importance, and obtaining the spatial distribution of peach orchards is helpful for yield prediction and precision agriculture. In this study, we introduce a new U-Net semantic segmentation model, utilizing ResNet50 as a backbone network, augmented with an Efficient Multi-Scale Attention (EMA) mechanism module and a LayerScale adaptive scaling parameter. To address style differences between images from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Google Earth, and Sentinel-2 satellite, we incorporate Cycle-Consistent Generative Adversarial Networks (CycleGAN). This synthesis ensures that UAV images conform to a comparable style found in Google Earth and Sentinel-2 images, while feature details of high spatial resolution UAV images are transferred to Google Earth and Sentinel-2 images through transfer learning. The results demonstrate that using ResNet50 as a backbone network for the U-Net model yields higher accuracy compared to using VGG16 for the U-Net model. Specifically, the Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) values for UAV and Sentinel-2 images are higher by 0.49 % and 0.95 %, respectively. The MIoU values for UAV, Google Earth, and Sentinel-2 images increased by 0.87 %, 1.71 %, and 1.74 %, respectively, with the introduction of EMA. Additionally, with the introduction of LayerScale adaptive scaling parameters, the MIoU values increased by 0.31 %, 0.33 %, and 1.44 %, respectively, further enhancing the segmentation accuracy of the model. After applying CycleGAN and transfer learning, the MIoU increased by 1.02 %, 0.15 %, and 1.57 % for UAV, Google Earth, and Sentinel-2 images, respectively, resulting in MIoU values of 97.39 %, 92.08 %, and 84.54 %. The comparative analysis with DeepLabV3+, PSPNet, and HRNet models demonstrates the superior mapping performance of the proposed method. Moreover, the method exhibits good generalization and mapping speed across six test sites in the research area. Overall, this approach ensures high precision and efficiency in peach orchard mapping, accommodating various spatial resolutions, and holds potential for addressing diverse requirements in peach orchard mapping applications.

Background: Only a minority of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients can benefit from systemic regimens. Macrophages, which abundantly infiltrate in HCC, could mediate tumour microenvironment remodelling and immune escape, proving to be powerful weapons in combating HCC. Thus, a deeper understanding of macrophages is necessary for improving existing antitumour treatments. Methods: With a series of bioinformatic approaches, we comprehensively explored the role of macrophage-related genes in human HCCs from multiple single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing datasets. Unsupervised clustering was performed to cluster the macrophage marker genes (MMGs). GSVA and functional enrichment analysis were used to elucidate the functional differences among the MMG-associated clusters. Subsequently, a component analysis algorithm was used to construct a Macrosig score, and the prognosis, biological characteristics, mutation profile, TME cell infiltration status and drug response of patients with different Macrosig scores were further analysed. Results: We identified 13 MMGs in 574 HCC samples, based on which three MMG-associated clusters were defined. Overall survival time, clinicopathological features and immune infiltration scores differed among the different clusters. On this basis, 12 hub genes were identified among these clusters; subsequently, a scoring system was constructed to determine the Macrosig score. Importantly, patients with low-Macrosig scores, characterized by increased immune infiltration, increased mutation frequency and increased immune checkpoint expression, including CTLA-4, LAG3, PDCD1 and TIGIT, exhibited enhanced efficacy of immunotherapy when validated in an external database. Moreover, a low-Macrosig score indicates increased sensitivity to AZD.2281, A.443654, ABT.263, ABT.888, AG.014699 and ATRA, while a high Macrosig score indicates increased sensitivity to AZD6482, AKT inhibitor VIII, AS601245, AZ628, AZD.0530 and AZD6244. Conclusions: A novel scoring system was constructed to guide more effective prognostic evaluation and tailoring therapeutic regimens for HCC patients.

Summary: Background: Endovascular therapy (EVT) was demonstrated effective in acute large vessel occlusion (LVO) with large infarction. Revealing subgroups of patients who would or would not benefit from EVT will further inform patient selection for EVT. Methods: This post-hoc analysis of the ANGEL-ASPECT trial, a randomised controlled trial of 456 adult patients with acute anterior-circulation LVO and large infarction, defined by ASPECTS 3–5 or infarct core volume 70–100 mL, enrolled from 46 centres across China, between October 2, 2020 and May 18, 2022. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receiving EVT and medical management or medical management alone. One patient withdrew consent, 455 patients were included in this post-hoc analysis and categorised into 4 subgroups by lower or higher NIHSS (< or ≥16) and smaller or larger infarct core (< or ≥70 mL). Those with lower NIHSS & smaller core, and higher NIHSS & larger core were considered clinical-radiological matched subgroups; otherwise clinical-radiological mismatched subgroups. Primary outcome was 90-day modified Rankin Scale (mRS). ANGEL-ASPECT is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04551664. Findings: Overall, 139 (30.5%) patients had lower NIHSS & smaller core, 106 (23.3%) higher NIHSS & larger core, 130 (28.6%) higher NIHSS & smaller core, and 80 (17.6%) lower NIHSS & larger core. There was significant ordinal shift in the 90-day mRS toward a better outcome with EVT in clinical-radiological matched subgroups: lower NIHSS & smaller core (generalised OR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.18–2.62; p = 0.01) and higher NIHSS & larger core (1.64; 1.06–2.54; 0.01); but not in the two clinical-radiological mismatched subgroups. Interpretation: Our findings suggested that in patients with anterior-circulation LVO and large infarction, EVT was associated with improved 90-day functional outcomes in those with matched clinical and radiological severities, but not in those with mismatched clinical and radiological severities. Simultaneous consideration of stroke severity and infarct core volume may inform patient selection for EVT. Developing a self-elastic sponge integrating active and passive hemostatic mechanisms for the effective management of uncontrolled coagulopathic hemorrhage remains a challenge. We here developed a chitosan-based sponge by integrating freeze-drying, chemical decoration of alkyl chains and phosphate groups, and physical loading of thrombin. The sponge exhibited high mechanical strength, self-elasticity, and rapid shape recovery. The sponge facilitated blood cell adhesion, aggregation, and activation through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, as well as accelerated blood clotting. The sponge exhibited higher efficacy than commercial gauze and gelatin sponge in managing uncontrolled hemorrhage from heparinized rat tail amputation, liver superficial injury, and liver perforating wound models. In addition, the sponge exhibited favorable biodegradability and biocompatibility. These findings revealed that the developed sponge holds great potential as a novel hemostat for effectively managing uncontrolled coagulopathic hemorrhage from superficial and perforating wounds.

The inducible CRISPR activation (CRISPR-a) system offers unparalleled precision and versatility for regulating endogenous genes, making it highly sought after in plant research. In this study, we developed a chemically inducible CRISPR-a tool for plants called ER-Tag by combining the LexA-VP16-ER inducible system with the SunTag CRISPR-a system. We systematically compared different induction strategies and achieved high efficiency in target gene activation. We demonstrated that guide RNAs can be multiplexed and pooled for large-scale screening of effective morphogenic genes and gene pairs involved in plant regeneration. Further experiments showed that induced activation of these morphogenic genes can accelerate regeneration and improve regeneration efficiency in both eudicot and monocot plants, including alfalfa, woodland strawberry, and sheepgrass. Our study expands the CRISPR toolset in plants and provides a powerful new strategy for studying gene function when constitutive expression is not feasible or ideal.

This study aimed to investigate the metabolites of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in vivo from the perspective of metabolomics, so as to reveal the potential mechanism of CLA in lowing blood lipids. 30 male non-adult SD rats were divided into: normal diet group, high-fat diet group, and CLA group (intragastric administration of 0.5 g/kg·BW CLA). Results indicate improvements in body weight and visceral fat deposition in obese rats treated with CLA. Metabolomic analysis reveals significant changes in the arachidonic acid (ARA) pathway and its intestinal metabolite oxylipins. Key biomarkers (PGE1, PGE2, TXB2, PGF2α, and 12S-HHTrE) catalyzed by Cox and Lox are identified, influencing blood lipid reduction. Network analysis links these biomarkers to Pparγ. PCR and western blot confirm Pparγ changes in rat liver and intestine, impacting downstream lipid metabolism. This study reveals a potential mechanism: CLA mitigates obesity through the ARA-Cox/Lox-PGE2-Pparγ pathway, offering insights for treating obesity and dyslipidemia.

Background: Grade IV circular hemorrhoids are difficult to treat. We aim to describe the modified whitehead hemorrhoidectomy procedure and to assess the effectiveness and safety of this procedure for grade IV circular hemorrhoid patients. Methods: Patients with grade Ⅳ circular hemorrhoids who underwent modified Whitehead hemorrhoidectomy and partial hemorrhoidectomy for fourth-degree circular mixed hemorrhoids were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data were extracted from the database at our institution, and long-term postoperative complications were assessed through repeated outpatient examinations and telephonic communication. Results: A total of 205 patients were included in this study. The mean operative time was 59.2 ± 13.8 min. The average hospital stay was 4.6 ± 1.0 days. For postoperative complications, 66 (32.2%) patients had urinary retention, 10 (4.9%) patients had a sense of incomplete rectal emptying, 5 (2.4%) patients had anal incontinence, and 6 (2.9%) patients had wound infection. For long-term postoperative complications, 3 (1.5%) patients experienced mild to moderate anal stricture, 2 (1%) patients experienced mucosal ectropion, they all had smooth recoveries, and none of them needed secondary surgery. None of these patients had a hemorrhoid recurrence. A total of 205 patients who received modified Whitehead hemorrhoidectomy and 161 who received partial hemorrhoidectomy were included. There were no residual hemorrhoids in patients who received modified Whitehead hemorrhoidectomy, and none had hemorrhoid recurrence. Fifty-eight patients who received partial hemorrhoidectomy had hemorrhoidal residues, and 19 patients experienced hemorrhoid recurrence. After modified Whitehead hemorrhoidectomy, 3 patients developed anal stenosis, and 2 had mucosal ectropion. Four patients developed anal stricture after partial hemorrhoidectomy, and none had mucosal ectropion. They all had smooth recoveries, and none of them needed a secondary surgery. For the mean duration of surgery, postoperative bleeding, postoperative pain, wound infection, sense of incomplete rectal emptying, anal incontinence, and urinary retention, no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups. Conclusions: Compared with partial hemorrhoidectomy, modified whitehead hemorrhoidectomy is an effective and safe surgical procedure and does not significantly increase the risk of anal stenosis and mucosal ectropion for grade IV circular hemorrhoid patients. Prospective randomized controlled trials are needed to verify our results.

Background: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for breast cancer screening has been shown in international trials to increase cancer detection compared with mammography; however, results have varied across screening settings, and currently there is limited and conflicting evidence on interval cancer rates (a surrogate for screening effectiveness). Australian pilot data also indicated substantially longer screen-reading time for DBT posing a barrier for adoption. There is a critical need for evidence on DBT to inform its role in Australia, including evaluation of potentially more feasible models of implementation, and quantification of screening outcomes by breast density which has global relevance. Methods: This study is a prospective trial embedded in population-based Australian screening services (Maroondah BreastScreen, Eastern Health, Victoria) comparing hybrid screening comprising DBT (mediolateral oblique view) and digital mammography (cranio-caudal view) with standard mammography screening in a concurrent group attending another screening site. All eligible women aged ≥40 years attending the Maroondah service for routine screening will be enrolled (unless they do not provide verbal consent and opt-out of hybrid screening; are unable to provide consent; or where a ‘pushback’ image on hybrid DBT cannot be obtained). Each arm will enrol 20,000 women. The primary outcomes are cancer detection rate (per 1000 screens) and recall rate (percentage). Secondary outcomes include ‘opt-out’ rate; cohort characteristics; cancer characteristics; assessment outcomes; screen-reading time; and interval cancer rate at 24-month follow-up. Automated volumetric breast density will be measured to allow stratification of outcomes by mammographic density. Stratification by age and screening round will also be undertaken. An interim analysis will be undertaken after the first 5000 screens in the intervention group. Discussion: This is the first Australian prospective trial comparing hybrid DBT/mammography with standard mammography screening that is powered to show differences in cancer detection. Findings will inform future implementation of DBT in screening programs world-wide and provide evidence on whether DBT should be adopted in the broader BreastScreen program in Australia or in subgroups of screening participants. Trial registration: The trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR, ACTRN12623001144606, https://www.anzctr.org.au/). Registration will be updated to reflect trial progress and protocol amendments.

Conventional Mg-RE-based alloys containing a high content of RE solutes can generate high strength, but there is often low ductility. Herein, we reported a low RE alloying Mg–5Er-1Nd-1Zn-0.2Zr extrusion alloy with only 6 wt% RE addition, showing a high strength-ductility synergy, such as a yield strength of ∼380 MPa and an elongation of ∼12.5 %), which is superior to the majority of traditional Mg-RE-based wrought alloys with at least 12 wt% RE addition. Nano-spaced lamellae was formed in the α-Mg matrix during extrusion, such as stacking faults (SFs) evolved in dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) grains and the 14H long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) phase developed in unDRXed grains as a result of dynamical solute partitioning during extrusion. And this alloy characterizes a high proportion (∼70 %) of elongated unDRXed grains with a strong basal texture. Thus, high strength is mostly related to SFs/LPSO lamellae strengthening and texture hardening, instead of the commonly accepted refinement strengthening and precipitation hardening in those of high RE containing Mg alloys. While high ductility is heavily dependent on SFs/LPSO lamellae to trigger strain hardening and dislocations glide, independent of fine grains as in traditional Mg alloys with high elongation. The findings give an insight into the development of high-performance Mg wrought alloys with a high strength-ductility synergy.

Under appropriate culture conditions, plant cells can regenerate new organs or even whole plants. De novo organ regeneration is an excellent biological system, which usually requires additional growth regulators, including auxin and cytokinin. Nitrate is an essential nutrient element for plant vegetative and reproductive development. It has been reported that nitrate is involved in auxin biosynthesis and transport throughout the growth and development of plants. In this study, we demonstrated that the ectopic expression of the MdNLP7 transcription factor in Arabidopsis could regulate the regeneration of root explants. MdNLP7 mainly participated in the regulation of callus formation, starting with pericycle cell division, and mainly affected auxin distribution and accumulation in the regulation process. Moreover, MdNLP7 upregulated the expression of genes related to auxin biosynthesis and transport in the callus formation stage. The results demonstrated that MdNLP7 may play a role in the nitrate-modulated regeneration of root explants. Moreover, the results revealed that nitrate–auxin crosstalk is required for de novo callus initiation and clarified the mechanisms of organogenesis.

L-theanine, a non-protein amino acid in tea, has been widely studied as an immune enhancer in poultry, livestock, and rodents. However, no studies have been performed on the application of L-theanine in aquaculture feed. To fill this research gap, we investigated the effects of L-theanine as a feed additive on the growth performance, immune function, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal flora of female Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) using biochemical assays, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. In total, 300 one-year-old female Chinese mitten crabs were randomly divided into treatment groups supplemented with 0 (control), 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% L-theanine (L0–L4, respectively; n = 4 replicates per group with 15 crabs per replicate). Urban canopy coverage (UTCC) is a measure that reflects both the quantity and quality of urban green spaces. Understanding how UTCC responds to urbanization is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to achieve sustainable urbanization. Our study presented a framework for understanding the response of UTCC changes to the urbanization process coupling state, transition, and drivers. Using high-resolution remote sensing interpretation data in 2002–2013–2019, we examined the spatiotemporal heterogeneity and comparative characteristics of UTCC status indicators, UTCC transition indicators, and urbanization factors within Beijing's urban area in 2002–2013 and 2013–2019. These indicators included annual UTCC change (AUTCCPC), annual mean patch size change (AMPSC), annual Euclidean minimum distance change (AEmnC), UTCC loss (UTCCloss), UTCC gain (UTCCgain), UTCC stability index (UTCCSI), impermeable surface proportion (P_IMP), road density (D_ROAD), population density (D_POP), and distance from urban center (DIS_UC). The findings indicated a “deceleration and balance” trend in UTCC changes from 2002 to 2019. The UTCC proportion, patch size, connectivity, and stability continued to increase, accompanied by a deceleration in increasing rate. The UTCC spatial distribution shifted from a ring road gradient pattern to a balanced pattern. The urbanization factors that impacted UTCC most were P_IMP and D_Road. The interaction impact intensity between factors was enhanced, with P_IMP ∩ D_READ and P_IMP ∩ DIS_UC having the most substantial impact on UTCC changes. Our study unveiled the phased response of UTCC changes to the urbanization process, providing a theoretical foundation for “how to promote more effective UTCC planning during rapid urban development” and aiding planners/managers in implementing sustainable forest management.

The impact of biochar application on crop yield has always been a topic of concern. However, most current research focuses on the short-term effects of biochar on crop growth. Investigating the long-term effects of biochar in increasing crop yields is crucial for food security and sustainable agricultural development. To address this issue, this study performed a coupling of meta-analysis and structural equation model (SEM) based on the establishment of a dataset containing 981 sets of observations. The results demonstrated that biochar significantly and durably boosted crop yield, and biochar also has shown an average increase of 36.2% in SOC over a monitoring period exceeding 2 years. Crop yields increased by an average of 16% after biochar application for the long-term scale, although the increase varied across crop types, and biochar application performed better on corn and wheat than paddy rice production. It is noteworthy that the yield still increased by 15% on average after 6 years of biochar application. According to SEM, the yield increase was positively correlated with the application amount of biochar, and the yield increase was higher under low nitrogen (N) input than under high N input. The long-term yield-increasing effect of biochar was more attributable to its enhancement of SOC rather than its effects on soil bulk density and pH.

The conservation of the ecosystem in the Yellow River source region (YRSR) has become a crucial national strategy in China, emphasizing the need for evaluating ecosystem integrity to identify priority conservation areas (PCAs). Current research has primarily employed a limited number of indicators or a single dimension to assess ecosystem integrity, which may overlook comprehensive considerations required for effective conservation planning. To address this, a multidimensional approach was adopted in this study to evaluate ecosystem integrity, incorporating three dimensions: biological diversity, ecosystem function, and stress components. The MaxEnt and Fragstats models were employed to create an ecosystem integrity map and Marxan was used to identify priority conservation areas within the YRSR. Our results showed that (1) the index of ecosystem integrity gradually declined from east to west, consistent with the spatial distribution of biodiversity and ecosystem function, whereas the stress component exhibits a decreasing trend from northeast to southwest. (2) the priority protected areas were distributed in Maduo, Ruoergai, Maqu, Maqin, Henan, Gande, and Jiuzhi Counties. Furthermore, to address existing protection gaps and enhance connectivity, it was recommended to incorporate an additional 27,644 km2 of southwest and central YRSR into the PCAs. Overall, the study offered practical recommendations for the conservation of the ecosystem in the YRSR. In addition, the method of PCAs determination in this study could provide a reference for the government’s growing nature conservation affairs, which will contribute to sustainable development.

Although abundant transmission polarization conversion metasurfaces (T-PCMs) have been reported, a dual-band T-PCM has only received little attention. Moreover, a reconfigurable-phase design of the T-PCMs is limited to a single-frequency band operation. There is hardly any literature to integrate dual-band and reconfigurable-phase features into a T-PCM. Herein, a dual-band T-PCM is presented based on the Fabry-Pérot-like resonant cavity. Particularly, the T-PCM meta-atom contains dual anisotropic patches distributed in different layers, and the novel dual-patch structure introduces multiple current modes to implement dual-band operation. Further, a reconfigurable-phase design of the dual-band meta-atom is performed, and four PIN diodes are embedded in each meta-atom to realize a 1-bit reconfigurable phase. In this way, the T-PCM meta-atom can simultaneously achieve high-efficiency 90° polarization rotation and 1-bit dynamic phase manipulation in 2.3–3.0 GHz and 4.4–7.5 GHz. By changing the encoding of the T-PCM, both cross-polarized transmission and beam manipulation are demonstrated in two divided bands. A sample is fabricated and measured to validate our design, and the results confirm the simulations. With the advantages of ingenious design and a clear operation mechanism, the novel dual-patch structure can be extended to the terahertz and optics regimes.

Recurrent complete atrioventricular block induced by coronary spasm is rare. We present a case of a 47-year-old woman who suffered from two episodes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest within one year due to complete atrioventricular block caused by coronary vasospasm. No implantable cardioverter defibrillator was implanted after her first episode. As for the second episode, permanent brain injury was left behind despite successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation. She underwent a challenging rehabilitation process and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator was implanted before discharge. We captured the dynamic changes of the electrocardiogram during the episode with high temporal resolution. This case illustrates the importance of recognizing coronary spasm as a potential cause of complete atrioventricular block and highlights the need for implantable cardioverter defibrillator in such patients to improve survival and quality of life.

Biochar amendment to soils is regarded as the potential practice to mitigate climate change while also increasing yields. However, geographical differences in the effects of biochar on cereal production and greenhouse gas emissions are not well understood at the global scale. Random forest, a classic machine learning algorithm, was employed to reveal the drivers of geographical differences in the effects of biochar on cereals yield and greenhouse gas emissions. The potential for yield increases and greenhouse gas emission reduction was predicted in this study. The results indicate that nitrogen fertilizer rate is the most important factor determining the impact of biochar on cereal yield, while biochar application rate strongly affected greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, the maximum increase in cereal crop yields under biochar application was 14.1%. To achieve the largest increment globally, recommended values of biochar application, mineral nitrogen application rate and pyrolysis temperature were predicted to be around 36.3 t ha−1, 193.7 kg N ha−1 and 420 °C, respectively. The maximum reductions of methane and nitrous oxide emissions from paddy fields around the world were 21.6% and 31.0%, and from maize and wheat fields 35.7% and 36.1%, respectively. Although biochar can potentially improve yields while reducing greenhouse gas emissions worldwide under proper management, the performance of biochar showed great heterogeneity.

Geochemical survey data analysis is recognized as an implemented and feasible way for lithological mapping to assist mineral exploration. With respect to available approaches, recent methodological advances have focused on deep learning algorithms which provide access to learn and extract information directly from geochemical survey data through multi-level networks and outputting end-to-end classification. Accordingly, this study developed a lithological mapping framework with the joint application of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM). The CNN-LSTM model is dominant in correlation extraction from CNN layers and coupling interaction learning from LSTM layers. This hybrid approach was demonstrated by mapping leucogranites in the Himalayan orogen based on stream sediment geochemical survey data, where the targeted leucogranite was expected to be potential resources of rare metals such as Li, Be, and W mineralization. Three comparative case studies were carried out from both visual and quantitative perspectives to illustrate the superiority of the proposed model. A guided spatial distribution map of leucogranites in the Himalayan orogen, divided into high-, moderate-, and low-potential areas, was delineated by the success rate curve, which further improves the efficiency for identifying unmapped leucogranites through geological mapping. In light of these results, this study provides an alternative solution for lithologic mapping using geochemical survey data at a regional scale and reduces the risk for decision making associated with mineral exploration.

Tumors are spatially heterogeneous tissues that comprise numerous cell types with intricate structures. By interacting with the microenvironment, tumor cells undergo dynamic changes in gene expression and metabolism, resulting in spatiotemporal variations in their capacity for proliferation and metastasis. In recent years, the rapid development of histological techniques has enabled efficient and high-throughput biomolecule analysis. By preserving location information while obtaining a large number of gene and molecular data, spatially resolved metabolomics (SRM) and spatially resolved transcriptomics (SRT) approaches can offer new ideas and reliable tools for the in-depth study of tumors. This review provides a comprehensive introduction and summary of the fundamental principles and research methods used for SRM and SRT techniques, as well as a review of their applications in cancer-related fields.

The discarding of spent fluorescent lamps, one of the most significant sources of mercury usage in industry, might cause mercury release into the environment when suffering from breakage. The reclamation disposal of fluorescent lamps for mercury recycling is essential, while how to achieve highly efficient conversion of various mercury species into elemental mercury vapor is a key challenge. Herein, the distillation method was adopted for mercury recycling from phosphor powder. The results show that the contents of elemental mercury and oxidized mercury vapor filled in the lamps were 150–3500μgand 5–20μg, respectively. The mercury release sustained for 13(±2) h, with a maximum mercury concentration of 4500μg/m3. The mercury in phosphor can be desorbed to an undetected level when distilling at 600 °C under vacuum for 30 min, while that would be achieved at 700 °C when distilling under atmospheric pressure. This suggests that the vacuum distillation was favorable for the conversion of oxidized mercury into elemental mercury. The variation of mineral phase, particle size distribution and morphology of phosphor after distillation was insignificant, which guaranteed the recycling of phosphor simultaneously accompanying with mercury recycling. This work clarified the mercury release behavior during lamps crushing and provided a feasible way for mercury recycling.

Background/purpose: Alveolar bone fenestration and dehiscence is common in untreated patients and potentially harmful. This study was to evaluate the effect of augmented corticotomy (AC) on the prevention and treatment of alveolar bone defects in skeletal class III high-angle patients during presurgical orthodontic treatment (POT). Materials and methods: Fifty patients with skeletal Class III high-angle malocclusion were enrolled, of whom 25 patients (G1) underwent traditional POT and 25 patients (G2) received AC during POT. The alveolar bone fenestration and dehiscence around the upper and lower anterior teeth were measured by CBCT. The incidence and transition of fenestration and dehiscence in the two groups were compared by the chisquare and Mann‒Whitney rank-sum tests. Results: Before treatment (T0), the incidence of fenestration and dehiscence around the anterior teeth of all patients was 39.24% and 24.10%, respectively. After POT (T1), the incidence of fenestration in G1 and G2 was 49.83% and 25.86%, respectively, and the incidence of dehiscence in G1 and G2 was 58.08% and 32.07%, respectively. For teeth without fenestration and dehiscence at T0, more anterior teeth in G1 exhibited fenestration and dehiscence at T1 than in G2. For teeth with fenestration and dehiscence at T0, most transitions in G1 were maintained or worsened, but “cure” cases were observed in G2. After POT, the cure rates of fenestration and dehiscence in G2 were 80.95% and 91.07%, respectively. Conclusion: During the POT of skeletal Class III high-angle patients, augmented corticotomy can significantly treat and prevent alveolar bone fenestration and dehiscence around anterior teeth.

For the calculation of transient fluid–solid coupling temperature field of transformer, the traditional Galerkin finite element full order model has the defect that the calculation time is up to hours-level, which is difficult to meet the timeliness requirements of the digital twin model. Firstly, the implementation architecture of transformer digital twin based on IoT is established, and the necessity of multiphysical field simulation and model reduction technology for building the digital twin model is introduced. Then, based on the method of transformer digital twin implementation,it is proposed to combine the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) with the finite element (FE) to establish the Galerkin FE full order model for the governing equation of the transient temperature field, the reduced order mode composed of the first several bases is intercepted to build the reduced order model of transient fluid–solid coupling temperature field. Finally, the POD reduced order model is applied to calculate the temperature rise of a transformer. According to the actual transformer temperature rise test, the temperature values of different measuring points are selected to compare the calculation error and time of the reduced order model and the full order model. The results show that the error between the third order model and full order model meets the criterion of POD truncation error, and the calculation time is shortened by 192 times, which can meet the seconds-level calculation requirements.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) emissions and pollution are a growing concern due to their potential impact on ecosystems and human health, particularly in soil. This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 2,451 publications spanning from 2006 to 2023. The aim is to assess the research landscape, trends, contributors, and collaborative efforts related to MNPs in soil. Moreover, it examines the extensive research on the effects of MNPs on soil organisms, including earthworms, nematodes, and other fauna as well as the physical–chemical impacts, nanoscale interactions, and ecotoxicological effects on soil microorganisms. Utilizing network analysis, this study explores the global distribution of research across countries, institutions, authors, and keywords, shedding light on the interconnected scientific exploration. The findings reveal a consistent rise in research output over the past decade, reflecting worldwide interest in soil MNPs pollution. It also identifies influential authors and interdisciplinary clusters, highlighting their significant collaborations. Moreover, it pinpoints key institutions and leading journals in this area. Keyword co-occurrence and time-series analysis uncover seven significant research clusters. All provide insights into crucial MNPs aspects and their environmental and health implications. Our findings guide future research and inform strategies to combat MNPs pollution in soils, underscore the need for interdisciplinary approaches to address this complex challenge. In essence, our comprehensive bibliometric analysis serves as a valuable resource, it benefits researchers, policy stakeholders by promoting further research and guiding strategies to mitigate MNPs pollution in soils, in support of ecosystem preservation and human health protection.

Cadmium (Cd), one of the most toxic heavy metals, has been extensively studied by environmental scientists because of its detrimental effects on plants, animals, and humans. Increased industrial activity has led to environmental contamination with Cd. Cadmium can enter the food chain and pose a potential human health risk. Therefore, reducing the accumulation of Cd in plant species and enhancing their detoxification abilities are crucial for remediating heavy metal pollution in contaminated areas. One innovative technique is nano-phytoremediation, which employs nanomaterials ranging from 1 to 100 nm in size to mitigate the accumulation and detrimental effects of Cd on plants. Although extensive research has been conducted on using nanomaterials to mitigate Cd toxicity in plants, it is important to note that the mechanism of action varies depending on factors such as plant species, level of Cd concentration, and type of nanomaterials employed. This review aimed to consolidate and organize existing data, providing a comprehensive overview of the effects and mechanisms of nanomaterials in enhancing plant resistance to Cd. In particular, its deep excavation the mechanisms of detoxification heavy metals of nanomaterials by plants, including regulating Cd uptake and distribution, enhancing antioxidant capacity, regulating gene expression, and regulating physiological metabolism. In addition, this study provides insights into future research directions in this field.

Objectives: This study sought to derive and validate a simple model combining traditional clinical risk factors with biomarkers and imaging indicators easily obtained from routine preoperative examinations to predict functionally significant coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese populations. Methods: We developed five models from a derivation cohort of 320 patients retrospective collected. In the derivation cohort, we assessed each model discrimination using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), reclassification using the integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) and net reclassification improvement (NRI), calibration using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test, and clinical benefit using decision curve analysis (DCA) to derive the optimal model. The optimal model was internally validated by bootstrapping, and external validation was performed in another cohort including 96 patients. Results: The optimal model including 5 predictors (age, sex, hyperlipidemia, hs-cTnI and LVEF) achieved an AUC of 0.807 with positive NRI and IDI in the derivation cohort. Moreover, the Hosmer-Lemeshow test showed a good fit, and the DCA demonstrated good clinical net benefit. The C-statistic calculated by bootstrapping internal validation was 0.798, and the calibration curve showed adequate calibration (Brier score = 0.179). In the external validation cohort, the optimal model performance was acceptable (AUC = 0.704; Brier score = 0.20). Finally, a nomogram based on this model was constructed to facilitate its use in clinical practice. Conclusions: A simple model combined clinical risk factors with hs-cTnI and LVEF improving the prediction of functionally significant CAD in Chinese populations. This attractive model may be a choice for clinicians to risk stratification for CAD.

The Urban greenbelt (UGB), vital for curbing urban expansion, experiences shifts in function across diverse development stages. Unfortunately, UGB functional transformation process, especially its social utilization of ecological functions, often receives insufficient attention, impacting urban ecosystem health enhancement and residents' well-being. The UGB park, combining ecology and social benefits, holds significance in studying varied UGB functions and their transformation. Thus, tracking park development trends (“parkization”) aids in analyzing UGB functional evolution. We employed high-precision land use/land cover (LULC) data (less than1m) from Beijing to explore UGB functional transformation law, focusing on UGB park dynamics and their ecological benefits (Park Ecological Land Use/Land Cover (PLULC) percentage (PPELULC), mean patch size (MPS), edge density (ED), area-weighted mean shape index (AWMSI), patch size standard deviation (PSSD)), and social benefits (per capita park area (PCP), per capita PLULC area (PCPELULC), accessible park service scope). Results revealed that as UGB park construction slowed, park ecological space displayed an “increasing and dispersing” trend, signifying weakened UGB park ecological benefits. Simultaneously, park social services collectively exhibited improvement, suggesting the UGB functional transformation from solely ecological protection to holistic environmental and social safeguarding. This transformation was more notable within the first greenbelt (UGB1), predominantly driven by comprehensive and natural amusement parks. The “parkization”-based UGB function evaluation method not only illuminated the functional transformation mechanism but also underscored the integrated needs of ecology and society, which is essential to the subsequent scientific formulation and implementation of ecological management strategies that meet the needs of urban environmental protection

Background: Breast cancer care has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This systematic review aims to describe the observed pandemic-related changes in clinical and health services outcomes for breast screening and diagnosis. Methods: Seven databases (January 2020–March 2021) were searched to identify studies of breast cancer screening or diagnosis that reported observed outcomes before and related to the pandemic. Findings were presented using a descriptive and narrative approach. Results: Seventy-four studies were included in this systematic review; all compared periods before and after (or fluctuations during) the pandemic. None were assessed as being at low risk of bias. A reduction in screening volumes during the pandemic was found with over half of studies reporting reductions of ≥49%. A majority (66%) of studies reported reductions of ≥25% in the number of breast cancer diagnoses, and there was a higher proportion of symptomatic than screen-detected cancers. The distribution of cancer stage at diagnosis during the pandemic showed lower proportions of early-stage (stage 0–1/I-II, or Tis and T1) and higher proportions of relatively more advanced cases than that in the pre-pandemic period, however population rates were generally not reported. Conclusions: Evidence of substantial reductions in screening volume and number of diagnosed breast cancers, and higher proportions of advanced stage cancer at diagnosis were found during the pandemic. However, these findings reflect short term outcomes, and higher-quality research examining the long-term impact of the pandemic is needed.

Chalcone, a common chemical scaffold of many naturally occurring compounds, has been widely used as an effective template for drug discovery due to its broad biological activities. In this study, a series of chalcone derivatives were designed and synthesized based on the hybridization of 1-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)butan-1-one with chalcone. Interestingly, most of the target compounds exhibited inhibitory effect of tumor cells in vitro. Especially, (E)-3-(5-bromopyridin-2-yl)-1-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (B3) revealed over 10-fold potency than 5-fluorocrail against the Hela and MCF-7 cells with IC50 values of 3.204 and 3.849 μM respectively. Moreover, B3 displayed low toxicity on normal cells. Further experiments indicated that B3 effectively inhibited the proliferation and migration of tumor cells, and promoted their apoptosis. The calculation and prediction of ADME showed that the target compounds may have good pharmacokinetic properties and oral bioavailability. Reverse molecular docking suggested that the possible target of B3 is CDK1. Taken together, these results suggested that B3 appears to be a promising candidate that merits further attention in the development of anticancer drugs.

Summary: Ionic diodes constructed with asymmetric channel geometry and/or charge layout have shown outstanding performance in ion transport manipulation and reverse electrodialysis (RED) energy collection, but the working mechanism is still indistinct. Herein, we systematically investigated RED energy conversion of straight nanochannel-based bipolar ionic diode by coupling the Poisson-Nernst-Planck and Navier-Strokes equations. The effects of nanochannel structure, charging polarity, and symmetricity as well as properties of working fluids on the output voltage and output power were investigated. The results show that as high-concentration feeding solution is applied, the bipolar ionic diode-based RED system gives higher output voltage and output power compared to the unipolar channel RED system. Under optimal conditions, the voltage output of the bipolar channel is increased by ∼100% and the power output is increased by ∼260%. This work opens a new route for the design and optimization of high-performance salinity energy harvester as well as for water desalination.

U-type evacuated tube collector (ETC) is one of the most popular types of solar collectors for solar thermal applications. However, ETCs suffer from drawbacks caused by the intermittency of solar radiation. The addition of phase change materials (PCMs) inside ETC can reduce the energy fluctuations by storing the excess thermal energy during the daytime and releasing it to meet the supply deficit in the absence of sunlight. Therefore, a numerical model was conducted to assess the thermal performance of a PCM-filled U-type ETC with fins and experimentally validated. The design of different energy storage solutions, including the melting point of the PCM, the flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF) and the diameter of the inner glass tube were optimized. A two-fold beneficial effect of extending the hot water supply period and a reduction of the peak outlet temperature of HTF is achieved by filling PCM inside U-type ETC with fins. When the melting temperature of the PCM is 323 K, the reduction of the HTF peak outlet temperature is 7.4 K and the liquid fraction of the PCM approaches to a relatively high value, while the thermal efficiency and the thermal storage efficiency of the ETC are 50.72% and 19.20%, respectively. Meanwhile, the hot water supply time over 308 K extends by 160 min, compared to the case without PCM. It is also found that a high rate of the HTF inlet flow can shorten the hot water supply time with a smaller liquid fraction of the PCM. Furthermore, enlarging the glass tube leads to a higher thermal efficiency and thermal storage efficiency. This work shows that filling PCM with appropriate designs in the ETC with fins can promote the performance of ETC .

Low melting point metals (LMPMs) have greater potential to address the cooling difficulties of high-power airborne equipment than conventional phase change materials (PCMs). However, the heating power in existing LMPM-based heat sinks is generally low. Here, a bismuth-based alloy, Bi44.7Pb22.6In19.1Sn8.3Cd5.3, is adopted. Experiments were conducted in a pin fin heat sink (PFHS) and an empty heat sink (EHS) under 50–1500 W. Experimental results on the effect of PCMs indicate that heat sinks filled with LMPMs outperform n-dodecane. The heating wall temperature is decreased, and the holding time is prolonged significantly. The EHS and PFHS remain below 50 °C from 847 and 1268 s to 2209 and 2302 s at 50 W, respectively. Experimental data illustrate that for LMPM-based heat sinks, the heating wall temperature and holding time are improved by applying pin fins. The EHS and PFHS remain below 50 °C for 143 and 183 s at 500 W, respectively. However, the difference between the holding time below 70 °C for EHS and PFHS is reduced to ±3%. Experimental results reveal that increasing the heating power results in rising heating wall temperature and falling holding time. The holding time of the LMPM-based PFHS decreases from 2302 s at 50 W to 61 s at 1500 W, and the heating power effect weakens from approximately 50% at 100–200 W to approximately 10% at 900–1500 W. Moreover, the Nusselt number (Nu) decreases with increasing dimensionless time, but the decrease is increasingly smaller. A higher Rayleigh number correlated with a larger heating power leads to a higher Nu due to the intensive effect of natural convection. New dimensionless correlations of Nu are developed, yielding mean absolute deviations of 3.5% and 2.7% for the LMPM-based PFHS and EHS, respectively.

Background: Hyperchloremia is associated with increased mortality in critically ill patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between increased chloride levels and mortality outcomes in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: We performed a retrospective study of all patients diagnosed with ICH and included in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-Ⅲ) from 2001 to 2012. Inclusion criteria were the first diagnosis of ICH, ICU length of stay (LOS) over 72 h, and not receiving hypertonic saline treatment. Serum chloride perturbation within 72 h of admission was evaluated as a predictor of outcomes. The increase in chloride from baseline was dichotomized based on an increase in chloride in 72 h (≤5 mmol/L or >5 mmol/L). The primary outcome was 90-day mortality. Results: A total of 376 patients (54.5% male, median age 70 years, interquartile range:58–79 years) were included. The overall 90-day mortality was 32.2% (n=121), in-hospital mortality was 25.8% (n=97), and Day 2 acute kidney injury (AKI) occurred in 29.0% (n=109) of patients. The prevalence of hyperchloremia on admission, during the first 72 h, and an increase in chloride (>5 mmol/L) were 8.8%, 39.4%, and 42.8%, respectively. After adjusting for confounders, the hazard ratio of increase in chloride (>5 mmol/L) was 1.66 (95% confidence interval:1.05–2.64, P=0.031). An increase in chloride (>5 mmol/L) was associated with a higher odds ratio for 90-day mortality in both the AKI and non-AKI groups. Conclusions: An increase in chloride from baseline is common in adult patients with ICH admitted to ICU. The increase is significantly associated with elevated mortality. These results support the significance of diligently monitoring chloride levels in these patients.

Background: Breast density has become a topic of international discussion due to its associated risk of breast cancer. As online is often a primary source of women's health information it is therefore essential that breast density information it is understandable, accurate and reflects the best available evidence. This study aimed to systematically assess online international breast density information including recommendations to women. Methods: Searches were conducted from five different English-speaking country-specific Google locations. Relevant breast density information was extracted from the identified websites. Readability was assessed using the SHeLL Editor, and understandability and actionability using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT). A content analysis of specific recommendations to women was also conducted. Results: Forty-two eligible websites were identified and systematically assessed. The included informational content varied across websites. The average grade reading level across all websites was 12.4 (range 8.9–15.4). The mean understandability was 69.9% and the mean actionability was 40.1%, with 18/42 and 39/42 websites respectively scoring lower than adequate (70%). Thirty-six (85.7%) of the websites had breast density-related recommendation to women, with ‘talk to your doctor’ (n = 33, 78.6%) the most common. Conclusions: Online information about breast density varies widely and is not generally presented in a way that women can easily understand and act on, therefore greatly reducing the ability for informed decision-making. International organisations and groups disseminating breast density information need to ensure that women are presented with health literacy-sensitive and balanced information, and be aware of the impact that recommendations may have on practice.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines in patients with gastrointestinal cancer (GI) cancer. The role of memory B cells (MBCs) in the humoral response to COVID-19 vaccination was also investigated. Methods: In this prospective observational study, GI cancer patients and healthy individuals who had received 2 doses of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines were included. The data regarding adverse effects, serum anti-receptor binding domain (RBD)-IgG, neutralizing antibodies (NAbs), and frequencies of MBCs were collected prospectively. Results: The inactivated COVID-19 vaccines were safe and well tolerated. Serum anti-RBG-IgG and NAbs were lower for cancer patients. Old age, high ASA score, and receiving active chemotherapy were risk factors for lower antibody titers. The frequencies of activated and resting MBCs decreased in (17.45% vs 38.11%, P = 0.002; 16.98% vs 34.13%, P = 0.023), while the frequencies of intermediate and atypical MBCs increased in cancer patients (40.06% vs 19.87%, P = 0.010; 25.47% vs 16.61%, P = 0.025). The serum antibody titer decreased gradually during follow-up but increased when a booster vaccine was given. Conclusion: The inactivated COVID-19 vaccines were well tolerated in patients with GI cancer but with lower immunogenicity. The subpopulations of MBCs were disordered in cancer patients, and a booster vaccine may be prioritized for them.

Summary: Upon recognizing danger signals produced by virally infected neurons, macrophages in the central nervous system (CNS) secrete multiple inflammatory cytokines to accelerate neuron apoptosis. The understanding is limited about which key effectors regulate macrophage-neuron crosstalk upon infection. We have used neurotropic-virus-infected murine models to identify that vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR-3) is upregulated in the CNS macrophages and that virally infected neurons secrete the ligand VEGF-C. When cultured with VEGF-C-containing supernatants from virally infected neurons, VEGFR-3+ macrophages suppress tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) secretion to reduce neuron apoptosis. Vegfr-3ΔLBD/ΔLBD (deletion of ligand-binding domain in myeloid cells) mice or mice treated with the VEGFR-3 kinase inhibitor exacerbate the severity of encephalitis, TNF-α production, and neuron apoptosis post Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection. Activating VEGFR-3 or blocking TNF-α can reduce encephalitis and neuronal damage upon JEV infection. Altogether, we show that the inducible VEGF-C/VEGFR-3 module generates protective crosstalk between neurons and macrophages to alleviate CNS viral infection.

Identifying direct substrates of enzymes has been a long-term challenge. Here, we present a strategy using live cell chemical cross-linking and mass spectrometry to identify the putative substrates of enzymes for further biochemical validation. Compared with other methods, our strategy is based on the identification of cross-linked peptides supported by high-quality MS/MS spectra, which eliminates false-positive discoveries of indirect binders. Additionally, cross-linking sites allow the analysis of interaction interfaces, providing further information for substrate validation. We demonstrated this strategy by identifying direct substrates of thioredoxin in both E. coli and HEK293T cells using two bis-vinyl sulfone chemical cross-linkers BVSB and PDES. We confirmed that BVSB and PDES have high specificity in cross-linking the active site of thioredoxin with its substrates both in vitro and in live cells. Applying live cell cross-linking, we identified 212 putative substrates of thioredoxin in E. coli and 299 putative S-nitrosylation (SNO) substrates of thioredoxin in HEK293T cells. In addition to thioredoxin, we have shown that this strategy can be applied to other proteins in the thioredoxin superfamily. Based on these results, we believe future development of cross-linking techniques will further advance cross-linking mass spectrometry in identifying substrates of other classes of enzymes.

Based on interdigitated capacitance structure (ICS), a method for realizing low-loss tunable metasurfaces (TMS) is proposed in the paper. The variation in the metal patch structure and the PIN diode position indicates that introducing additional capacitance can break through the resonant modulation range of TMS, to reduce the energy loss. The additional capacitance is implemented by loading an external fixed capacitor or designing ICS. The latter is more suitable for conformal designs with resonant metasurfaces than the former and brings higher phase stability. Furthermore, the conformal design of the ICS can be easily applied to multi-bit TMS designs. Therefore, the ICS is verified by a manufactured 1-bit and 2-bit TMS. The experimental results are consistent with the simulation ones, indicating that 180 ± 30° phase difference can be obtained in the frequency band from 8.13 GHz to 12.45 GHz with an amplitude loss of less than 0.60 dB. In addition, the amplitude loss of 2-bit TMS is reduced to 1.12 dB at 9.3 GHz. The low-loss realization method therefore has a promising future in improving the efficiency of metasurfaces antennas and popularizing metasurfaces applications.
