Abstract

A search for the K+→μ−νe+e+ decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. An upper limit of 8.1×10−11 is obtained for the decay branching fraction at 90% CL, improving by a factor of 250 over the previous search.

Abstract

Searches for lepton number violating K+→π−e+e+ and K+→π−π0e+e+ decays have been performed using the complete dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 5.3×10−11 and 8.5×10−10 are obtained on the decay branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The former result improves by a factor of four over the previous best limit, while the latter result represents the first limit on the K+→π−π0e+e+ decay rate.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-) decay from an exposure of 1.7 x 10(11) charged kaon decays recorded in 2003-2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-)) = (4.24 +/- 0.14) x 10(-6). The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated., We gratefully acknowledge the CERN SPS accelerator and beam line staff for the excellent performance of the beam and the technical staff of the participating institutes for their efforts in the maintenance and operation of the detector, and data processing. We thank M. Koval for making the “Prague” radiative Dalitz decay code available in the NA48/2 simulation software. Discussions with G. D'Ambrosio and O. Catà were most stimulating in clarifying the impact of interference terms on our measurement.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS reports the first search for K+→π+νν¯ using the decay-in-flight technique, based on a sample of 1.21×1011 K+ decays collected in 2016. The single event sensitivity is 3.15×10−10, corresponding to 0.267 Standard Model events. One signal candidate is observed while the expected background is 0.152 events. This leads to an upper limit of 14×10−10 on the K+→π+νν¯ branching ratio at 95% CL.

Abstract

Yearly thousands of tons of cellulose, in the form of toilet paper, end up in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) through the sewage. Cellulose was recovered with a 0.35 mm sieve and processed obtaining three different pellets: pure cellulose, straw mix (50 % cellulose-50 % straw) and wood mix (50 % cellulose-50 % wood). Those materials were carbonized at 750 °C for 210 min producing non-activated biochar. Then, a part of those biochars was biologically activated by fermentation adding minerals, nutrients and a mixture of bacteria. All biochar versions were characterized, assessing the surface, porosity and adsorption capacity for a dye (indigo carmine) and a selection of 5 micropollutants (MPs): benzotriazole, carbamazepine, clarithromycin, DEET, and diclofenac. However, results showed that conventional analysis for adsorbents was not adequate for biologically activated materials since biofilm can obstruct the pores of the supporting material hindering the pollutants' adsorption. Therefore, the biological degradation of the pollutants by the microorganisms was also tested. Finally, biologically activated WOW-Biochar straw mix was the selected material to be further applied in constructed wetlands (CW) due to its higher average MPs removal capacity. 10. Vertical-flow constructed wetlands as a sustainable on-site greywater treatment process for the decrease of micropollutant concentration in urban wastewater and integration to households' water services.

Abstract

Micropollutant removal from effluent of conventional wastewater treatment has recently become one of the most discussed topics in the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This is due to the need to add a post-treatment step to the conventional processes to comply with stricter quality standards for effluents as outlined in the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD). The adoption of on-site or decentralized greywater (GW) treatment in sustainable buildings using vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) is a promising direction. It represents an interesting alternative for the removal of micropollutants at the source of pollution, such as personal care products (PCPs) and some pharmaceuticals which are mainly present in this wastewater fraction. Additionally, the treated greywater could be used in households' water services which do not require potable water quality, thus saving drinking water. In this context, this work compares the results of micropollutant removal from projects using VFCWs as a polishing step of WWTPs effluent, as a centralized solution, to the results from a decentralized GW treatment. The results show that VFCWs can remove the investigated micropollutants (Diclofenac and DEET) with an efficiency of >90 %, in both centralized and decentralized treatments. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of biochar produced by pyrolysis from recovered wastewater cellulose and activated biologically as an admixture in Constructed Wetlands (CWs) when applied as a post-treatment step to remove micropollutants (MPs) from municipal wastewater effluent. Two planted vertical flow mesocosm CWs with cellulose-based admixtures of different origins (plant residue and recovered toilet paper) were fed with a municipal wastewater effluent representative for rural catchments. The results showed an average MPs elimination of 89.1 % for the activated biochar produced from recovered cellulose when 15 relevant compounds are considered and a reduction of the risk from compounds cocktail below the maximum acceptable level having diclofenac, carbamazepine, PFOS, ciprofloxacin and clarithromycin as main risk drivers (Risk Quotient > 1). The implementation of a circular approach to reduce MPs was finally conducted for the Blies catchment (Saarland region in Germany) characterized by low population density and small, sensitive water bodies. Abstract

Mind-body practices and meditation have been increasingly studied in recent years due to their beneficial effects on cognition, and physical and psychological health. Growing evidence suggests that these practices could be utilized as interventions to impact age-related biological processes, such as cognitive decline, inflammation, and homeostatic dysregulation. Indeed, it has been reported that mindful meditation may induce neuroplasticity in brain regions involved in control of attention, emotional regulation, and self-awareness. In the current research we studied the effects of a recently developed movement meditation, named the Quadrato Motor Training (QMT), on the proinflammatory cytokine Interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), utilizing a pre-post design. In addition to its role in the immune system, IL-1β is also an important mediator of neuroimmune responses related to sickness behavior, and plays a role in complex cognitive processes, such as synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis, and neuromodulation. Thirty healthy participants were divided in two groups, one performing QMT for 2 months, and one passive control group. Salivary IL-1β expression was examined by ELISA to measure protein levels and by qRT-PCR to quantify mRNA. In addition, the methylation profile of the IL-1β promoter was examined. All participants further conducted the Alternate Uses Task (AUT) and Hidden Figure Test (HFT), to measure their creativity and spatial cognition. The results showed that, following QMT practice, IL-1β protein level decreased and creativity increased, compared to the control group. These data demonstrate that QMT may help reduce inflammatory states and promote cognitive improvement, highlighting the importance of non-pharmacological approaches to health and well-being., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier B.V. 13. Behaviour of 27 selected emerging contaminants in vertical flow constructed wetlands as post-treatment for municipal wastewater.

Abstract

Six substrates (i.e. sand enriched with activated or non-activated biochar or zeolite in different ratios) were tested in Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands (VFCWs) planted with Phragmites australis and Iris pseudacorus for the removal of 27 emerging contaminants from municipal wastewater. The laboratory investigation under controlled conditions (spiked constant concentrations in synthetic wastewater) lasted 357 days and proved VFCWs being able to provide excellent effluent quality in terms of both macro - and micropollutant elimination. Because overall removal efficiencies exceeded 90% in most of the cases, significant differences among the substrates were not detectable. For compounds with medium elimination (i.e. AMPA) the type of substrate seemed to play a strong role and the maximum amount of active ingredient adsorbed per amount of substrate has been quantified (i.e. 0.77 μg of AMPA per g of 30% biochar mixed with sand). Three of the most promising substrates from laboratory where thus selected to be tested under real conditions (fluctuation in concentration, variable temperature). Abstract

Background: Maternal obesity is a risk factor for childhood obesity; this is a major public health concern given that ∼40% of pregnant women are either overweight or obese. Whether differences in milk composition in lean compared with obese women contribute to childhood obesity is unclear., Objectives: We aimed to analyze relationships between maternal obesity and human milk metabolites, infant body composition, and postnatal weight gain., Methods: This was a prospective study in which mothers intending to breastfeed exclusively, and their newborn infants, were enrolled at delivery (n = 35 mother-infant pairs). We excluded mothers with diabetes, other medical conditions, or pregnancy complications. Participants were grouped by maternal prepregnancy BMI <25 (lean) or ≥25 kg/m2 (overweight/obese). We analyzed infant body composition by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and used untargeted liquid chromatography-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to measure the milk content of 275 metabolites at 1 and 6 mo postpartum., Results: At 1 mo postpartum, 10 metabolites differed between overweight/obese and lean groups with nominal P < 0.05, but none was altered with a false discovery rate <0.25. Many differentially abundant metabolites belonged to the same chemical class; e.g., 4/10 metabolites were nucleotide derivatives, and 3/10 were human milk oligosaccharides. Milk adenine correlated positively with both continuously distributed maternal BMI and with infant adiposity and fat accrual. Analysis of milk composition at 6 mo postpartum revealed 20 differentially abundant metabolites (P < 0.05) in overweight/obese compared with lean women, including 6 metabolites with a false discovery rate of <0.25. At both 1 and 6 mo, human milk abundance of 1,5-anhydroglucitol, which has not previously been described in milk, was positively associated with maternal BMI., Conclusions: Maternal obesity is associated with changes in the human milk metabolome. While only a subset of metabolites correlated with both maternal and infant weight, these point to potential milk-dependent mechanisms for mother-child transmission of obesity. Abstract

The Sir proteins, namely Sir2, 3 and 4, have roles related to heterochromatin, but genome-wide studies have revealed their presence at many euchromatic loci, although the functional meaning of this is still not clear. Nhp6a is an abundant HMG-like protein in yeast, which has a role in transcription by modulating chromatin structure and nucleosome number. Although much is known about its structure and function, information regarding its regulation is scarce. NHP6A, among other genes, emerges in ChIP-on chip studies of global Sir proteins binding, suggesting it could be regulated by SIR. We have investigated NHP6A expression in sir deletion mutants as well as in SIR2 overexpressing conditions. In addition, we have asked if the Sir2 deacetylation activity is involved by using conditions that either inhibit (treatment with nicotinamide) or enhance (calorie restriction conditions) Sir2 activity. We have found that, consistent with previous microarray studies, NHP6A expression undergoes a slight increase in sir mutant strains, but is strongly repressed when SIR2 is overexpressed. In a sir3 mutant strain the gene continues to be transcribed, even in SIR2 overexpressing conditions. In addition, treating the cells with nicotinamide counteracts the SIR2 overexpressing effect. Finally, conditions that are known to potentiate Sir2 deacetylation activity seem to mimic the effect of SIR2 overexpression on NHP6A. Our results suggest that Sir2 is involved in the regulation of NHP6A promoter, acting more as a specific repressor, rather than a long-range silencer. This effect is specific, and the Sir2 deacetylase activity is required for the Sir2 mediated repression of NHP6A. Abstract

UV irradiation technology as a membrane bioreactor (MBR) post-treatment was investigated and assessed. Both UV low pressure (LP) and medium pressure (MP) lamps were examined. The technology was installed in a pilot plant treating hospital wastewater to provide the study with adequate field data. The effect of the UV irradiation was enhanced with varying dosages of H2O2 to establish an advanced oxidation process (AOP). The efficiency of the pharmaceutical removal process was assessed by examining 14 micropollutants (antibiotics, analgesics, anticonvulsants, beta-blockers, cytostatics and X-ray contrast media) which are typically released by hospitals and detected with liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). While the MBR treatment generally showed only a low degradation capacity for persistent pharmaceuticals, much better degradation was obtained by applying UV irradiation and H2O2 as AOP. The "conventional" cost-benefit analysis of the different technology options taking into account both electrical energy consumption and pharmaceutical removal efficiency, revealed clearly better performance of low pressure UV lamps as AOP. However, a holistic comparison between the different scenarios was carried out by evaluating their environmental impacts using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Abstract

After ingestion, pharmaceuticals are excreted unchanged or metabolized. They subsequently arrive in conventional wastewater treatment plants and are then released into the environment, often without undergoing any degradation. Conventional treatment plants can be upgraded with post treatment, alternatively the removal of pharmaceuticals could be achieved directly at point sources. In the European project PILLS, several solutions for decentralized treatment of pharmaceuticals at hospitals were investigated at both pilot plant and full scale, and were then compared to conventional and upgraded centralized treatment plants using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Within the scope of the study, pharmaceuticals were found to have a comparatively minor environmental impact. As a consequence, an additional post treatment does not provide significant benefits. In the comparison of post treatment technologies, ozonation and activated carbon performed better than UV. These results suffer however from high uncertainties due to the assessment models of the toxicity of pharmaceuticals in LCA. Our results should therefore be interpreted with caution. LCA is a holistic approach and does not cover effects or issues on a local level, which may be highly relevant. We should therefore apply the precautionary ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and not conclude that the effect of pharmaceuticals is negligible in the environment., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

We have established an experimental system for reconstitution of an individual nucleosome on a closed DNA microdomain (operationally defined as a DNA domain of a size so small as to be unable to establish titratable superhelical turns). The microdomain (185 base-pairs (bp), composed of 128 bp encompassing the central part of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ADH II promoter plus 57 bp of a polylinker) was obtained by ligation under conditions that produced three circularized forms characterized by different linkage numbers. These linkomers were tested for nucleosome reconstitution with S. cerevisiae histones. It was observed that only microcircles with linkage reduction (delta Lk = 1 or 2) could form a nucleosome, as defined by protection of a 145(+/- 2) bp DNA fragment from micrococcal nuclease, relaxed forms (open or closed circles) could not.
