Microplastics (MPs) are becoming a class of pollutants with high global concerns. Research on the aging of MPs has focused on oxidative environments, it is of great interest to study the aging of MPs under reduction conditions. In this study, a reduction environment was constructed by purging nitrogen and adding reducing agents (NaBH 4 , VC, Na 2 S, C 2 Na 2 O 4 ) to understand the aging behavior and mechanism of MPs. The results proved that PVC occurred aging under four reduction conditions, and the aging degree was the strongest under NaBH 4 reduction condition. The aged PVC became broken, particle size decreased, and dechlorination phenomenon was observed. These phenomena were more obvious under the reduction condition in light, which was the superposition of photo-aging and reduction aging. The functional group components of PVC changed (C-C/CC increased, and oxygen-containing functional groups decreased) under reduction conditions, but photo-aging was dominant in the light system. Electron transfer occurred during the reduction process, and the EDC of PVC aged increased and EAC decreased. The aging of microplastics (MPs) occurs extensively in the environment, and understanding the aging mechanisms of MPs is essential to study the properties, fate and environmental impact of MPs. We proposed a creative hypothesis that polyethylene terephthalate (PET) can be aged by reducing reactions with reducing agents. Simulation experiments based on the principle of reduction of carbonyl by NaBH 4 were conducted to test the correctness of this hypothesis. The results showed that after 7 days of experiments, physical damage and chemical transformation occurred in the PET-MPs. The particle size of MPs was reduced by 34.95-55.93 %, and the C/O ratio was increased by 2.97-24.14 %. The changing order of surface functional groups (CO > C-O > C-H > C-C) was obtained. The occurrence of reductive aging and electron transfer of MPs was further supported by electrochemical characterization experiments. These results together reveal the reductive aging mechanism of PET-MPs: CO is firstly reduced to C-O by BH 4 - attack, and then further reduced to ·R. The resulting ·R recombines to form new C-H and C-C. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) leaching from biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) and its characteristics and corresponding environmental implication are rarely investigated. In this study, the main component of DOM leachate from the two BMPs (polyadipate/butylene terephthalate (PBAT)/polycaprolactone (PCL)) was verified by using excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). The PBAT-DOM (PBOM) was aromatized and terrestrial. Comparatively, PCL-DOM (PLOM) had low molecular weight. PBOM contained protein-like components while PLOM contained tryptophan and tyrosine components. Interestingly, both PBOM and PLOM could accelerate the decomposition and oxidation of coexisting polystyrene (PS) under light irradiation. Further, the difference in composition and the properties of BMPs-DOM significantly affected its photochemical activity. The high territoriality and protein-like component of PBOM significantly promoted the generation of 1 O 2 and O 2 •- , which caused faster disruptions to the backbone of PS. Simultaneously, the microbial community's richness, diversity, and metabolism were obviously improved under the combined pressure of aged PS and BMPs-DOM. Microplastics (MPs) pollution in the environment has become a global hotspot, but there is insufficient research on MPs in soils of large cities. This study investigated the pollution status of MPs in soils in different functional areas (commercial, tourist, industrial, and residential areas) of the Xi'an metropolitan area. The average abundances of MPs were 2218 items/kg in Xi'an city, 1329 items/kg in Xianyang city and 1400 items/kg in Yangling city. All MPs presented different shapes and were dominated by fragment and fiber. The 0-0.5 mm MPs accounted for the largest proportion. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was the predominant polymer type for MPs. The results showed that the soil in the Xi'an metropolitan area was polluted by MPs, with the pollution of MPs in Xi'an city being more severe than other two cities. This could be related to the advanced urbanization and industrialization process. Moreover, industrial and tourist areas had frequent industrial and human activities, so their MPs pollution was the worst. In addition, residential areas and some commercial areas far away from pollution sources had lower pollution levels and a more uniform distribution of MPs. Microplastics (MPs) experienced different aging processes in environment. Literatures about effect of artificially-accelerated aging on MPs behavior are still insufficient. The accelerated process induced by ultraviolet(UV)-activated persulfate (PS) is a promising technology for obtaining different aged MPs to understand long-term aging behavior. In the work, the aging behavior of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) accelerated by UV/PS system were investigated. It exhibited a dechlorination with 58.495 ± 6.090 mg/L Cl - release after 35 h UV-activated PS (0.01 M) process. The treatment led to significant alternations on surface morphology and chemical feature of PVC. The crystallinity was increased, and average size was reduced from 154.11 µm to 119.28 µm with aging time. Subsequently, many smaller size particles were produced. Furthermore, the process induced the breaking of backbone. Simultaneously, more oxygen-containing functional groups were identified. The oxidation reaction accelerated by sulfate radical (SO 4 •- ) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was predominant, which immensely promoted aging process. Sustained high levels of free radical contributed to production of alcohols and carboxylic acids short chain organics.
