Cardiovascular diseases pose a significant health and economic burden worldwide, with coronary artery disease still recognized as a major problem. It is closely associated with hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, poor diet, and excessive alcohol consumption, which may lead to macro- and microvascular abnormalities in the heart. Coronary artery stenosis reduces the local supply of oxygen and nutrients to the myocardium and results in reduced levels of myocardial perfusion, which can lead to more severe conditions and irreversible damage to myocardial tissues. Therefore, accurate evaluation of myocardial perfusion abnormalities in patients with these risk factors is critical. As technology advances, magnetic resonance myocardial perfusion imaging has become more accurate at evaluating the myocardial microcirculation and has shown a powerful ability to detect myocardial ischemia. We aimed to investigate sex-related differences in left ventricular (LV) deformation in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients with comorbid hypertension (HTN) by cardiac MRI. A total of 281 patients with HFrEF who underwent cardiac MRI were enrolled in this study. Sex-related differences in LV structure, function and strains derived from cardiac cine MRI in the context of HTN were measured and compared. The clinical variables associated with LV strains in HFrEF patients with comorbid HTN and determinants of impaired LV strains were investigated for both sexes. The prevalence of HTN did not differ between the sexes (P > 0.05). Despite having a similar LVEF, hypertensive men displayed decreased LV deformation in all 3 directions compared with hypertensive women (all P < 0.05). Male sex and its interaction with HTN were associated with higher LV mass index, reduced LV GCPS and GLPS compared with hypertensive women (all P < 0.05). Male sex was associated with LV deformation impairment in hypertensive HFrEF patients (all P < 0.05). After adjustment for covariates in HFrEF patients, HTN was found to be an independent determinant of impaired LV GCPS [β = 0.17; P = 0.022] and GLPS [β = 0.25; P < 0.001]) in men but not in women (all P > 0.05). Sex had a modifying effect on LV deformation in hypertensive HFrEF patients, with greater adverse effects on LV strains in men than in women. Background: This study aimed to explore the feasibility and accuracy of single-shot compressed-sensing (CS) cardiac magnetic resonance cine technology for the assessment of biventricular function and morphology in free-breathing (FB) pediatrics, especially those with arrhythmia., Methods: Seventy consecutive pediatric participants (6.27 ± 3.8 years, range:0.5-14 years) were enrolled between August 2019 and July 2020. Single-shot CS and conventional balanced steady-state free-precession (bSSFP) cine were obtained. The total scanning time, image quality and biventricular function parameters were compared for both sequences., Results: Single-shot CS cine had shorter acquisition time compared with the conventional bSSFP cine (all P < 0.001). The single-shot CS cine also had fewer artifacts than conventional bSSFP cine (breath-hold (BH): 4.6 ± 0.6 vs. 4.3 ± 0.6; FB without ongoing arrhythmia: 4.5 ± 0.6 vs. 3.6 ± 0.9; FB with ongoing arrhythmia: 4.7 ± 0.5 vs. 2.6 ± 1.1; all P < 0.05). No statistical difference of left ventricular parameters and right ventricular end-systolic volume/ejection fraction were found between the single-shot CS and conventional bSSFP cine in both BH and FB without ongoing arrhythmia group. There was an excellent correlation (R 2 = 0.60-0.98, all P < 0.001) and good intra-(range: R 2 = 0.57-0.99, P < 0.001)/inter-observer agreements (range: R 2 = 0.76-1, P < 0.001) for single-shot CS cine images in terms of biventricular function parameters., Conclusions: The single-shot CS cine can significantly reduce the image acquisition time, offering reliable quantification of biventricular function in free breathing condition for arrhythmic patients., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest none declared., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Giosgenin is a naturally steroidal saponin exhibiting a variety of biological activities including antitumor ones. A series of novel diosgenyl quaternary ammonium derivatives were designed and synthesized to develop potential anti-tumor agents in our research. All novel derivatives were characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and HR-MS, and evaluated for their in vitro anti-proliferative activities using MTT assay. In the present research, a bioremediation process was developed using solid complex bacterial agents (SCBA) through a combined two-step biodegradation process. Four isolated strains showed high efficiency for the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and the reduction of COD of the oily sludge, at 96.6% and 92.6%, respectively. The mixed strains together with bran prepared in form of SCBA exhibited improved performance compared to individual strains, all of which had an optimal temperature of around 35 °C. The use of SCBA provided advantages over commonly used liquid media for storage and transportation. The two-step process, consisting of firstly biosurfactant-assisted oil recovery and secondly biodegradation of the remaining TPH with SCBA, demonstrated the capability for treating oily sludge with high TPH content (>10 wt%) and short process period (60 days). The large-scale (5 tons oily sludge) field test, achieving a TPH removal efficiency of 93.8% and COD reduction of 91.5%, respectively, confirmed the feasibility and superiority of the technology for industrial applications., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Background: Diabetes mellitus-related cardiomyopathy has recently been described as a distinct progression of left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Pathological changes in the myocardium may explain the development of two different phenotypes. We evaluated the effects of LV geometry, myocardial microcirculation, and tissue characteristics on cardiac deformation in patients with subclinical type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) utilizing multiparametric cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging., Methods: A total of 135 T2DM patients and 55 matched controls were prospectively enrolled and performed multiparametric CMR examination. CMR-derived parameters including cardiac geometry, function, microvascular perfusion, T1 mapping, T2 mapping, and strain were analyzed and compared between T2DM patients and controls., Results: The univariable and multivariable analysis of systolic and diastolic function revealed that longer duration of diabetes was associated with decreased longitudinal peak systolic strain rate (PSSR-L) (β = 0.195, p = .013), and higher remodeling index and higher extracellular volume (ECV) tended to correlate with decreased longitudinal peak diastolic strain rate (PDSR-L) (remodeling index, β = -0.339, p = .000; ECV, β = -0.172, p = .026), whereas microvascular perfusion index and T2 value affected both PSSR-L (perfusion index, β = -0.328, p = .000; T2 value, β = 0.306, p = .000) and PDSR-L (perfusion index, β = 0.209, p = .004; T2 value, β = -0.275, p = .000) simultaneously., Conclusions: The LV concentric remodeling and myocardial fibrosis correlated with diastolic function, and perfusion function and myocardial edema were associated with both LV systolic and diastolic function., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Background: To assess left ventricular myocardial deformation in patients with primary cardiac tumors., Methods: MRI was retrospectively performed in 61 patients, including 31 patients with primary cardiac tumors and 30 matched normal controls. Left ventricular strain and function parameters were then assessed by MRI-tissue tracking. Differences between the tumor group and controls, left and right heart tumor groups, left ventricular wall tumor and non-left ventricular wall tumor groups, and tumors with and without LV enlargement groups were assessed. Finally, the correlations among tumor diameter, myocardial strain, and LV function were analyzed., Results: Left ventricular myocardial strain was milder for tumor group than for normal group. Peak circumferential strain (PCS) and its diastolic strain rate, longitudinal strains (PLS) and its diastolic strain rates, and peak radial systolic and diastolic velocities of the right heart tumor group were lower than those of the left heart tumor group (all p<0.050), but the peak radial systolic strain rate of the former was higher than that of the latter (p=0.017). The corresponding strains were lower in the left ventricular wall tumor groups than in the non-left ventricular wall tumor group (p<0.050). Peak radial systolic velocities were generally higher for tumors with LV enlargement than for tumors without LV enlargement (p<0.050). Peak radial strain, PCS, and PLS showed important correlations with the left ventricular ejection fraction (all p<0.050)., Conclusion: MRI-tissue tracking is capable of quantitatively assessing left ventricular myocardial strain to reveal sub-clinical abnormalities of myocardial contractile function., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of dual-source computed tomography (DSCT) in assessing the morphological features, quantitative features, and associated coronary artery lesions among patients with coronary artery fistula (CAF) before surgery., Methods: We enrolled 34 patients with CAF that were morphologically and quantitatively analyzed by DSCT and compared the analyses with surgical results (reference standard). The associated coronary artery lesions were also assessed., Results: By DSCT, we identified 15 patients (44.1%) with left-sided CAF, 9 (26.5%) with right-sided CAF, and 10 (29.4%) with bilateral CAF; the left anterior descending coronary artery (50.0%) was most frequently involved. Drainage was most commonly in the main pulmonary artery (41.2%), and those with right-sided CAF had larger feeding coronary arteries and drainage sites than those with left-sided or bilateral CAF (p<0.05). All the morphological features presented by DSCT were confirmed at surgery. In the quantitative analysis of CAF, DSCT was as accurate as surgery (r=0.95-0.98, p<0.001), and it was able to evaluate associated lesions accurately, including arteriosclerotic plaques, coronary artery aneurysms, and myocardial bridges. The evaluation could be completed in a single scan, without requiring an increased radiation dose (mean ED=2.27±1.92mSv)., Conclusions: DSCT is an alternative noninvasive imaging method that enables accurate assessment of morphological features, quantitative features, and associated coronary artery lesions in patients with CAF. Purpose: To compare the characteristics of tubercular vs. leukemic involvement of abdominopelvic lymph nodes using multidetector computed tomography (CT)., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed multidetector computed tomography features including lymph node size, shape, enhancement patterns, and anatomical distribution, in 106 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed, untreated tuberculosis (55 patients; 52%) or leukemia (51 patients; 48%). In patients with leukemia, 32 (62.7%) had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and 19 (37.3%) had acute leukemias; of these, 10 (19.6%) had acute myeloid leukemia, and 9 (17.6%) had acute lymphocytic leukemia., Results: The lower para-aortic (30.9% for tuberculosis, 63.2% for acute leukemias and 87.5% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and inguinal (9.1% for tuberculosis, 57.9% for acute leukemias and 53.1% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) lymph nodes were involved more frequently in the three types of leukemia than in tuberculosis (both with p <0.017). Tuberculosis showed peripheral enhancement, frequently with a multilocular appearance, in 43 (78.2%) patients, whereas patients with leukemia (78.9% for acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphocytic leukemia, 87.5% for chronic lymphocytic leukemia) demonstrated predominantly homogeneous enhancement (both with p <0.017). For the diagnosis of tuberculosis, the analysis showed that a peripheral enhancement pattern had a sensitivity of 78.2%, a specificity of 100%, and an accuracy of 88.7%. For the diagnosis of leukemia, the analysis showed that a homogeneous enhancement pattern was associated with a sensitivity of 84.3%, a specificity of 94.5%, and an accuracy of 89.6%., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that the anatomical distribution and enhancement patterns of lymphadenopathy seen on multidetector computed tomography are useful for differentiating between untreated tuberculosis and leukemia of the abdominopelvic lymph nodes.

Background: This study prospectively compared the accuracy of a sixty-four slice multidetector row CT (64-MDCT) in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the assessment of right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and dilatation in patients with mitral regurgitation., Methods: Eighty-four patients underwent ECG-gated 64-MDCT for the assessment of RV dysfunction and dilatation; 54 of these patients had known mitral regurgitation. End-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, stroke volume, and ejection fraction were measured using the 64-MDCT, and these results were retrospectively compared to the results of MRI (reference standard). Agreement between the 64-MDCT and MRI results was investigated using linear regression and Bland-Altman analyses. Receiver operating characteristic analyses calculated the sensitivity and specificity of RV dilatation on 64-MDCT scans for the prediction of mitral regurgitation severity and dysfunction, respectively., Results: No significant differences in RV function parameters were calculated between 64-MDCT and MRI (r=0.87 to 0.94; all p<0.001). Good intertechnique agreement was obtained using linear regression and Bland-Altman analyses. ROC analyses revealed that RV enlargement (>33 mm) on 64-MDCT scans predicted the RV dysfunction of mitral regurgitation with a sensitivity of 92.9% and a specificity of 82.9%., Conclusions: ECG-gated 64-MDCT accurately and reliably assessed RV function in patients with and without mitral regurgitation. Interrupted aortic arch (IAA) is a rare congenital cardiovascular condition. A patient with uncorrected IAA accompanied by rich collateral arteries can survive to adulthood asymptomatically. However, IAA complicated by aortic dissection is life threatening. Herein, we report a rare case of an isolated IAA accompanied by type B aortic dissection and extensive collateral arteries detected by multidetector computed tomography in a 38-year-old man. Objective: In a massive earthquake, cranio-maxillofacial trauma was common. The present study was to determine the features of cranio-maxillofacial trauma sustained in the massive Sichuan earthquake by multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT)., Methods: The study included 221 consecutive patients (123 males and 98 females; age range, 1-83 years; median age, 35 years) with cranio-maxillofacial trauma in the Sichuan earthquake, who underwent cranio-maxillofacial MDCT scans. The image data were retrospectively reviewed focusing on the injuries of the cranio-maxillofacial soft tissue, facial bones and cranium., Results: All patients had soft tissue injuries frequently with foreign bodies. Ninety-seven (43.9%) patients had fractures (1.5 involved sites per patient, range from 1 to 8) including single cranial fractures in 36 (37.1%) cases, single maxillofacial fractures were seen in 48 (49.5%) and cranio-maxillofacial fractures in 13 (13.4%). Single bone fracture was more common than multiple bone fractures (p<0.05). Nasal, ethmoid bones and the orbits were the most commonly involved sites of the craniofacial region. Thirty-eight (17.2%) patients had intracranial injuries, the commonest being subarachnoid haemorrhage and the commonest sites were the temporal and frontal regions. Coexisting intracranial injuries were more common in patients with cranial fractures than in patients with maxillofacial fractures (p<0.05)., Conclusion: Our results indicate that the cranio-maxillofacial trauma arising from the massive Sichuan earthquake had some characteristic features, and a significant number of individuals had the potential for combined cranial and maxillofacial injuries, successful management of which required a multidisciplinary approach., (Crown Copyright © 2010. Objective: To determine the features of earthquake-related pelvic crush fractures versus non-earthquake fractures with digital radiography and multidetector row computed tomography., Methods: One hundred and sixty-seven survivors with pelvic crush fractures in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake were entered in our study as the earthquake-related group (139 underwent digital radiography, 28 underwent multidetector row computed tomography); 70 victims with non-earthquake pelvic fractures were enrolled into this study as the non-earthquake group (54 underwent digital radiography, 16 underwent multidetector row computed tomography). Data were reviewed retrospectively between groups, focusing on anatomic distributions, status of pelvic bone fractures, numbers of pelvic bones involved, and classification of pelvic ring fractures according to the Tile classification system., Results: Pelvic fractures occurred more frequently in the pubis in the earthquake-related group than in the non-earthquake group (135/167, 81% vs. 48/70, 69%). In addition, comminuted fractures were more common in the earthquake-related group than in the non-earthquake group (55/167, 33% vs. 10/70, 14%). Multiple fractures were less common in the earthquake-related group than in the non-earthquake group (81/167, 49% vs. 46/70, 66%). Regarding the classification of pelvic ring fractures, Type C predominantly composed of subtype C3 occurred more frequently (64/167, 38% vs. 12/70, 17%), and Type A was less common in the earthquake-related group than in the non-earthquake group (31/167, 19% vs. 23/70, 32%). All differences were statistically significant (p<0.05). No difference was found in Type B fractures between the groups (72/167, 43% vs. 35/70, 50%)., Conclusion: Earthquake-related pelvic crush fractures can be characterized by a high incidence of pelvic fractures occurring in the pubis, comminuted fractures, and Type C fractures predominantly composed by subtype C3, despite a low incidence of multiple fractures.

Objective: The features of earthquake-related head injuries may be different from those of injuries obtained in daily life because of differences in circumstances. We aim to compare the features of head traumas caused by the Sichuan earthquake with those of other common head traumas using multidetector computed tomography., Methods: In total, 221 patients with earthquake-related head traumas (the earthquake group) and 221 patients with other common head traumas (the non-earthquake group) were enrolled in our study, and their computed tomographic findings were compared. We focused the differences between fractures and intracranial injuries and the relationships between extracranial and intracranial injuries., Results: More earthquake-related cases had only extracranial soft tissue injuries (50.7% vs. 26.2%, RR = 1.9), and fewer cases had intracranial injuries (17.2% vs. 50.7%, RR = 0.3) compared with the non-earthquake group. For patients with fractures and intracranial injuries, there were fewer cases with craniocerebral injuries in the earthquake group (60.6% vs. 77.9%, RR = 0.8), and the earthquake-injured patients had fewer fractures and intracranial injuries overall (1.5 + 0.9 vs. 2.5 +1.8; 1.3 + 0.5 vs. 2.1 + 1.1). Compared with the non-earthquake group, the incidences of soft tissue injuries and cranial fractures combined with intracranial injuries in the earthquake group were significantly lower (9.8% vs. 43.7%, RR = 0.2; 35.1% vs. 82.2%, RR = 0.4)., Conclusion: As depicted with computed tomography, the severity of earthquake-related head traumas in survivors was milder, and isolated extracranial injuries were more common in earthquake-related head traumas than in non-earthquake-related injuries, which may have been the result of different injury causes, mechanisms and settings.

Purpose: Massive earthquakes are harmful to humankind. This study of a historical cohort aimed to investigate the difference between earthquake-related crush thoracic traumas and thoracic traumas unrelated to earthquakes using a multi-detector Computed Tomography (CT)., Methods: We retrospectively compared an earthquake-exposed cohort of 215 thoracic trauma crush victims of the Sichuan earthquake to a cohort of 215 non-earthquake-related thoracic trauma patients, focusing on the lesions and coexisting injuries to the thoracic cage and the pulmonary parenchyma and pleura using a multi-detector CT., Results: The incidence of rib fracture was elevated in the earthquake-exposed cohort (143 vs. 66 patients in the non-earthquake-exposed cohort, Risk Ratio (RR) = 2.2; p<0.001). Among these patients, those with more than 3 fractured ribs (106/143 vs. 41/66 patients, RR=1.2; p<0.05) or flail chest (45/143 vs. 11/66 patients, RR=1.9; p<0.05) were more frequently seen in the earthquake cohort. Earthquake-related crush injuries more frequently resulted in bilateral rib fractures (66/143 vs. 18/66 patients, RR= 1.7; p<0.01). Additionally, the incidence of non-rib fracture was higher in the earthquake cohort (85 vs. 60 patients, RR= 1.4; p<0.01). Pulmonary parenchymal and pleural injuries were more frequently seen in earthquake-related crush injuries (117 vs. 80 patients, RR=1.5 for parenchymal and 146 vs. 74 patients, RR = 2.0 for pleural injuries; p<0.001). Non-rib fractures, pulmonary parenchymal and pleural injuries had significant positive correlation with rib fractures in these two cohorts., Conclusions: Thoracic crush traumas resulting from the earthquake were life threatening with a high incidence of bony thoracic fractures. The ribs were frequently involved in bilateral and severe types of fractures, which were accompanied by non-rib fractures, pulmonary parenchymal and pleural injuries.

Background: Right ventricular (RV) function is very important for those patients with respiratory and cardiovascular disorders that can result in RV impairments. Because of complex geometry of the chamber, it is difficult to accurately measure the RV volumetric parameters with conventional imaging modalities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the 64-MDCT can assess RV function with high accuracy and reproducibility when compared to the results with those of MRI., Methods: Forty-seven consecutive subjects underwent retrospectively ECG-gated 64-MDCT and MRI for assessing the ventricular function. Right ventricular end diastolic and end-systolic volume, stroke volume, and ejection fraction were measured with dedicated cardiac analysis software on 64-MDCT and compared with values measured on MRI which served as the reference standard. Agreement between two modalities was assessed with Bland and Altman analysis and linear regression analysis. Repeated measurements were performed to determine intraobserver and interobserver variability., Results: No significant differences were revealed in calculated RV volumes and EF between the two modalities. Agreement and correlation were similar for RV-EDV (0.4 ± 8.2 ml; r=0.95), RV-ESV (-0.6 ± 4.8; r=0.95), RV-SV (1.1 ± 6.7 ml; r=0.93), and RV-EF (0.9 ± 4.4; r=0.88). The difference of SV of right and left ventricle with 64-MDCT was not statistically significant (p=0.40) and good correlation was obtained (r=0.96). The variability in 64-MDCT measurements was lower than those in MRI., Conclusions: ECG-gated 64-MDCT can assess the RV function with high accuracy and reproducibility without geometric assumptions about right ventricle., (Copyright © 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
