Background and Aim: The involvement of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-2 (IGFBP-2) following acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is rarely studied in clinical practice. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the relationship between IGF-1 and IGFBP-2 concentrations at admission and risk stratification based on the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) risk score in patients with ACS., Methods and Results: In all, 304 patients diagnosed with ACS were included in this study. Plasma IGF-1 and IGFBP-2 were measured using commercially available ELISA kits. The TIMI risk score was calculated and the study population was stratified into high (n = 65), medium (n = 138), and low (n = 101) risk groups. Levels of IGF-1 and IGFBP-2 were analyzed for their predictive ability of risk stratification based on the TIMI risk scores. Correlation analysis showed that IGF-1 levels were negatively correlated with TIMI risk levels (r = -0.144, p = 0.012), while IGFBP-2 levels were significantly and positively correlated with TIMI risk levels (r = 0.309, p < 0.001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, IGF-1 (odds ratio [OR]: 0.995; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.990-1.000; p = 0.043) and IGFBP-2 (OR: 1.002; 95%CI: 1.001-1.003; p < 0.001) were independent predictors of high TIMI risk levels. In agricultural lands with selenium (Se) deficiency, bioavailability of Se in plants is low. Residents from large-scale agricultural production areas with Se deficiency often suffer from endemic diseases because of consumption of agricultural products lacking in Se. One such area in Northeast China where Keshan disease and Kashin-Beck disease originated, was selected for investigating the geochemistry, influencing factors, and risks of Se in the agroecosystems. Analysis of field samples indicates that the Se deficiency in soil is significantly reduced compared with that of several decades ago, and 62.6% of soils are now Se-sufficient in the southern Songnen Plain. However, Se in crop products remains low due to weak soil-plant transfer, resulting in high risks of Se deficiency related diseases in the rural population of this area. Structural equation modeling, principal component analysis, and other statistical analyses revealed that climate conditions and soil physical and chemical properties are the key factors influencing the spatial distribution of soil Se. Extensive use of agricultural fertilizers may indirectly inhibit the migration of Se from soil to plants. High-fat and high-sugar diets contribute to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although the impact of high-fat diets on AD pathogenesis has been established, the effect of high-sucrose diets (HSDs) on AD pathogenesis remains unclear. This study sought to determine the impact of HSDs on AD-related pathologies. Male APPswe/PS1dE9 (APP/PS1) transgenic and wild-type mice were provided with HSD and their cognitive and hypothalamus-related noncognitive parameters, including feeding behaviors and glycemic regulation, were compared. HSD-fed APP/PS1 mice showed increased neuroinflammation, as well as increased cortical and serum levels of amyloid-β. HSD-fed APP/PS1 mice showed aggravated obesity, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and leptin resistance, but there was no induction of hyperphagia or hyperleptinemia. Leptin-induced phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 in the dorsomedial and ventromedial hypothalamus was reduced in HSD-fed APP/PS1 mice, which might be associated with attenuated food-anticipatory activity, glycemic dysregulation, and AD-related noncognitive symptoms. Multiblock methods have been proposed to capture the complex characteristics of plant-wide monitoring due to the enlargement of process industries. These methods based on automatic sub-block division and copula-correlation, which simultaneously describe the correlation degree and correlation patterns, are designed for sub-block partition. However, the selection of variables for each sub-block through copula-correlation analysis requires a pre-defined cutoff parameter which is difficult to be determined without sufficient prior knowledge, and a "bad" parameter leads to a degraded performance. Therefore, a weighted copula-correlation-based multiblock principal component analysis (WCMBPCA) is proposed. First, the variables in each sub-block are obtained through the copula-correlation analysis-based weighted strategy rather than the cutoff parameter, which highly avoids information loss and prevents "noisy" information. Second, a PCA model is established in each sub-block. Third, a Bayesian inference strategy is used to merge the monitoring results of all sub-blocks. Finally, an online-horizon Bayesian fault diagnosis system is established to identify the fault type of the system based on the statistics of each sub-block. The average detection rate and the average diagnosis rate for numerical example are 77.85% and 98.95%, and that for TE example are 80.63% and 89.50%. Rice is one of the main sources of methylmercury (MeHg) to humans, and soil is the main source of MeHg to rice grains. Determining the Hg isotope composition in environmental samples is a good way of characterizing sources of Hg pollution and investigating environmental processes. We developed a new compound-specific method for determining stable Hg isotopes in MeHg in contaminated soil and sediment. The method involved HNO 3 leaching/solvent extraction, chemical ethylation, and separation by gas chromatography with a solenoid valve optimized to enrich MeHg. The method was optimized by using MeHg standard solution, certified reference materials and paddy soil samples. The δ 202 Hg precision for replicate MeHg isotope analyses was 0.14‰ (2 × standard deviation, n = 11), and no fractionation of Hg stable isotopes was found during the separation processes. The δ 202 Hg values for MeHg in paddy soils were -1.78‰ to -1.30‰, which were lower than the δ 202 Hg values for total Hg (-1.32‰ to -0.44‰). The results indicated that methylation (rather than demethylation) was the dominant process in the paddy soils. Drought is one of the most severe forms of abiotic stresses that threaten the survival of plants, including crops. In turn, plants dramatically change their physiology to increase drought tolerance, including reconfiguration of proteomes. Here, we studied drought-induced proteomic changes in leaves of cultivated tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), a solanaceous plant, using the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based protein labeling technology. Of identified 5570 proteins totally, drought treatment increased and decreased abundance of 260 and 206 proteins, respectively, compared with control condition. Most of these differentially regulated proteins are involved in photosynthesis, metabolism, and stress and defense. Although abscisic acid (ABA) levels greatly increased in drought-treated tobacco leaves, abundance of detected ABA biosynthetic enzymes showed no obvious changes. In contrast, heat shock proteins (HSPs), thioredoxins, ascorbate-, glutathione-, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-related proteins were up- or down-regulated in drought-treated tobacco leaves, suggesting that chaperones and redox signaling are important for tobacco tolerance to drought, and it is likely that redox-induced posttranslational modifications play an important role in modulating protein activity. A comprehensive study was conducted in July 2006, January 2007 and March 2007 to determine the impacts of some major physicochemical parameters on the level of mercury (Hg) in Puding Reservoir, Guizhou, China. The concentrations of Hg species in the summer campaign were significantly higher (p<0.01, generally 2 to 3 times higher) than those in the winter and spring campaigns, and no statistical differences were found between the same parameters for the latter two campaigns (p>0.05). Ancillary parameters including suspended particulate matter (SPM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, nitrate (NO3-) and chloride (Cl-) were also measured. During the sampling campaign in July 2006, average values for SPM, DOC, T, and NO3- were all higher compared to the other two campaigns, which suggested a similar seasonal trend between these parameters and Hg species. Seasonal variability may be related to increased runoff. High runoff volume due to abundant precipitation in the summer carried Hg-laden particulates into the reservoir, whereas there was less precipitation in the winter and spring when Hg levels were lower. Increased agricultural activity in the summer season also increased Hg levels in Puding Reservoir.
