Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution poses significant health and ecological risks warranting cost-effective remediation. This study investigated the efficacy of zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) and Miscanthus lutarioriparius synergism for Cr(VI) immobilization and stabilization. nZnO characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS and DLS was amended to 3 mg kg−1 Cr(VI) spiked soil pots at 0.5 % and 1 %. M. lutarioriparius seedlings were then transplanted and grown for 3 months. Results showed increase in residual soil Cr(III) from negligible to 68.9 % upon 1 % nZnO indicating reduction of Cr(VI). Maximum decline of 76.3 % in total Cr(VI) confirmed immobilization. Batch adsorption experiments revealed rising Cr(VI) removal from 61.3 % to 83.7 % by increase in nZnO dose from 0.2 to 1 g L−1. M. lutarioriparius demonstrated hyperaccumulator ability uptaking 208.3 and 156.8 mg kg−1 Cr in roots and shoots respectively. Restricted root-shoot translocation factor of 0.79 aided suitability for phytostabilization. The plant-nZnO synergy enhanced remediation efficiency as confirmed by tolerance index restoration from 38.6 % to 100 %. Increased growth performance reflected mitigation of toxicity by restricted bioavailability. Overall, the nanoremediation strategy displayed high potential for effective in situ stabilization of Cr(VI) contamination combining favorable properties of nZnO and plant tolerance mechanisms.

The untreated municipal solid wastes (MSWs) dumping and improper management causes major concerns of environmental degradation and human health risks. In this study, we collected soil and vegetable from the MSWs dumpsites of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) in southwestern Bangladesh. Trace metals (Pb, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn) were measured to explore the health risk of cultivated vegetables from dumpsites. Soil contamination was evaluated by geoaccumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), and pollution load index (PLI), while health risk was evaluated by transfer factor (TF), estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ). Results exhibited that the average trace metals in soil and vegetables followed in the order of Fe > Pb > Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Cd > Co. The Igeo, EF, CF, and PLI values revealed that the soil contamination was dominated by Pd, Cd, Mn, and Zn. The EDI of metals in vegetables were exceed the maximum daily intake only for Fe, Pb, and Cr. The total THQ was > 1, implying potential health hazards for the local people due to the long-term consumption of the cultivated vegetables. The multivariate analysis reveled that the sources of trace metals in the soils and vegetables of dumpsites were natural and anthropogenic. Overall, the findings suggest that growing vegetables in dumpsite is unsafe for long-term consumption by local inhabitants. Immediate action should be taken to protect the environment and human health from trace metal hazards.

Organophosphate insecticide spray poses potential threat of contamination of environmental components their accumulation in aquatic organisms. Although various physiological deficits associated with their exposure in fishes are documented, yet their retention in their edible muscle tissues has been poorly studied. In this context, the study was undertaken to ascertain the bioaccumulation of two organophosphate insecticide compounds (dimethoate and chlorpyrifos) in the muscles of juvenile Cyprinus carpio. The study could provide insight into the risks to human health associated with consuming contaminated fish flesh. The fishes exposed to various concentrations of dimethoate and chlorpyrifos in-vivo for 96 to ascertain the uptake and retention of these insecticides in the muscle. Results indicated that fish muscles accumulated the residues at all the concentrations with the recovery of 2.99% (0.032 ppm) of dimethoate exposed to LC50 concentrations. In contrast, the chlorpyrifos residues were found Below the Detection Level (BDL) in the fishes exposed to LC50 concentrations. The percentage bioaccumulation of dimethoate in fish muscle was 88.10%, and that of chlorpyrifos was BDL. The bio-concentration factor was dose-dependent and increased with increasing doses of both insecticides. The study invites attention to human health risk assessment in the regions where contaminated fish are consumed without scientific supervision.

Tire additives, such as benzothiazole and its derivatives (collectively called BTs), are large-volume chemicals that are constantly emitted into agricultural environment via tire-road wearing and other actions. The potential accumulation of BTs in food crops depends largely on their metabolism in plants, which is poorly understood. Herein, we evaluated uptake and metabolism of six BTs in carrot callus and intact carrot plants to understand their structure-specific metabolism. All BTs were readily taken up by carrot roots, with their root concentration factors (RCF) ranging from 1.66 ± 0.01 to 2.95 ± 0.05. The Mallorquín Swamp, an important ecosystem in Atlántico, Colombian Caribbean, underwent environmental monitoring at eight points during rainy, transition, and dry seasons. This was to assess water quality, seasonal variation, and the bioaccumulation of metals, emerging pollutants, and organic compounds in the fish Ariopsis canteri and Mugil incilis. Water parameters were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multifactorial ANOVA with the Tukey HSD test for seasonal differences. Normality and variance of the fish results were verified, and differences between groups were evaluated using ANOVA or Kruskal-Walli's method when data transformation failed. Spearman correlation was used to relate the results. Water sampling revealed variations in temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and nutrient levels. Significant differences in alkalinity and hardness were observed across seasons and sample points. The most probable number (MPN) levels of Total coliform and E. coli peaked near areas with domestic wastewater inputs, reaching 5.4x106 and 4.0x106 MPN, respectively, indicating potential microbiological contamination of water. Fish samples revealed high concentrations of persistent substances such as methylmercury, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and emerging pollutants. Heavy metal analysis showed elevated iron levels (5.28 ± 0.657 mg/L), while emerging pollutants, including ibuprofen (218 μg/L) and naproxen (343.89 μg/L), exhibited high concentrations near human settlements. Ariopsis canteri showed higher bioconcentration tendencies for methylmercury (238.5 ± 100 μg/kg), and acenaphthene (7782 ± 4123.8 μg/kg), possibly influenced by its feeding habits and habitat preferences. In contrast, Mugil incilis exhibited higher bioaccumulation trends of PAH (2376.23 ± 599.63 μg/kg acenaphthene) and emerging pollutants like galaxolide (139.49 ± 34.98 μg/kg), possibly due to its mobility and exposure to various contaminants in their environment. These findings emphasize the need to monitor and manage aquatic ecosystems' health to mitigate anthropogenic influences on water quality and biodiversity. This research serves as a reference for global conservation efforts, emphasizing the need for comprehensive monitoring and regulatory frameworks to protect aquatic environments and ensure their sustainability for future generations.

Microplastics (MPs), small plastic particles measuring less than 5 mm in size, have pervaded whole ecosystems globally, posing a significant threat to both aquatic and terrestrial organisms due to their ingestion and subsequent bioaccumulation, which can result in various health effects. Do salamanders living in terrestrial habitats ingest more microplastics compared to those living in aquatic habitats? To answer this question, two endemic model organisms—one aquatic: Anatolia newt, Neurergus strauchii sensu lato, and the other terrestrial, Atıf’s Lycian salamander, Lyciasalamandra atifi —were chosen to examine microplastic accumulation in both aquatic and terrestrial species in southern and eastern Türkiye. Our hypothesis is that salamanders living in terrestrial habitats may ingest more microplastics due to the fact that plastics are primarily produced and used on land before entering aquatic ecosystems. Using FTIR stereoscopy and stereomicroscopy, a total of 31 MPs were found in 14 (78 %) of the 18 locations studied for the aquatic salamander species. In contrast, 12 (86 %) of the 14 locations examined for the terrestrial salamander species contained 48 MPs. Although the number of MPs detected per individual in the terrestrial species showed an increasing trend over the 10 years, such a trend was not observed in the aquatic species. In terrestrial species, MPs abundance and salamander body size were significantly correlated in a positive way. On the other hand, in aquatic species, a significant and positive relationship was observed between MPs abundance and specimen weight. In the age/sex-based evaluation, more MPs were found in the gastrointestinal tracts of the juveniles (0.39 MPs/indiv.) compared to females (0.34 items/indiv.) and males (0.32 MPs/indiv.). The levels of microplastics found in terrestrial and aquatic salamanders highlight the potential threat posed by human-induced plastic pollution to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. To the best of our knowledge, the present study was a pioneer in reporting the variations in microplastic accumulation in aquatic and terrestrial salamanders.

Honeybee venom is one of the natural substances produced by bees (Apis mellifera). Their venom gland produces venom which plays a defensive role. In this study a concentration of macro and trace elements (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Sb, Se, Sr, Pb and Zn) in foragers′ and honeybees′ venom was analysed by axial inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) with good validation parameters to differentiate the element accumulation ability in honeybee venom. Cumulative ability for some elements (As, Al, Ba, Cr, Li, Mo, Pb, and Zn) in bee venom was clearly demonstrated. Oppositely, levels of macro elements (Ca, K, Mg and Na) in venom were several times lower compared to the levels detected in foragers. Moreover, PCA analysis of bee samples showed that Cr was associated with locality Košice, and Cd with locality Krompachy; both have rich industrial history. Since some of analysed elements are potentially toxic for humans, a risk assessment for bee-stung scenario was also calculated. A new way of exposure to potentially toxic elements via honeybee stung was showed in this study. Non-carcinogenic risk assessment for humans to selected toxic elements (As, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb) demonstrated acceptable risk and moreover the same we may conclude for potential carcinogenic risk for beekeepers exposed to As, Cd, Ni, and Pb via venom over their whole life.

Contamination of aquatic food webs with nanomaterials poses a significant ecological and human health challenge. Ingestion of nanomaterials alongside food disrupts digestion and impairs physiological processes, with potential consequences for organism fitness and survival. Complex interactions between nanomaterials and biota further exacerbate the issue, influencing life-history strategies and ecosystem dynamics. Accumulation of nanomaterials within autotrophic and detritus-based food webs raises concerns about biomagnification, especially for top-level consumers and seafood-dependent human populations. Understanding the extent and impact of nanomaterial contamination on aquatic biota is crucial for effective mitigation strategies. To address this challenge, we conducted a comprehensive study evaluating the bioaccumulation effects of graphene oxide (GO), a commonly used nanomaterial, within an aquatic food chain. Using a gnotobiotic freshwater microcosm, we investigated the effects of micro- and nano-scale GO sheets on key organisms: green algae (Chlorella vulgaris), brine shrimp (Artemia salina), and zebrafish (Danio rerio). Two feeding regimes, direct ingestion and trophic transfer, were employed to assess GO uptake and transfer within the food web. Direct exposure involved individual organisms being exposed to either nano- or micro-scale GO sheets, while trophic transfer involved a sequential exposure pathway: algae exposed to GO sheets, artemias feeding on the algae, and zebrafish consuming the artemias. Our study provides critical insights into nanomaterial contamination in aquatic ecosystems. Physicochemical properties of GO sheets, including ζ-potential and dispersion, were influenced by salt culture media, resulting in aggregation under salt conditions. Microscopic imaging confirmed the bioaccumulation of GO sheets within organisms, indicating prolonged exposure and potential long-term effects. Notably, biodistribution analysis in zebrafish demonstrated the penetration of nano-sized GO into the intestinal wall, signifying direct interaction with vital organs. Exposure to GO resulted in increased zebrafish mortality and impaired reproductive performance, particularly through trophic transfer. These findings emphasize the urgent need to address nanomaterial contamination in aquatic food webs to protect ecosystem components and human consumers. Our study highlights the importance of developing effective mitigation strategies to preserve the integrity of aquatic ecosystems, ensure resource sustainability, and safeguard human well-being. In conclusion, our study provides crucial insights into the impact of nanomaterial pollution on aquatic biota. By recognizing the challenges posed by nanomaterial contamination and implementing targeted interventions, we can mitigate the adverse effects, preserving the integrity of aquatic ecosystems and safeguarding human health.

Geosmin (GSM) is a ubiquitous odorant found in aquatic environments and organisms, with significant impacts on drinking water and aquaculture. However, its transfer from contaminated water to fish tissues is poorly investigated, resulting in limited information on its bioconcentration and environmental behavior. Fugacity and one-compartment models were developed to describe the fate, transformation, and transport of GSM in an air-water-fish system and analyze its uptake, distribution, and elimination kinetics in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The results showed that the fugacity model calculations indicated that 81.3 % of GSM was found in water for all microcosm. The primary mass transfer processes from water were water-air diffusion process (T21v) and that from water to fish (T2 f), with values of 67.3 and 22.54 μg/h, respectively. The emission rate (E2) and area (A2) in water parameters are most sensitive to GSM concentration, impacting the distribution and variance of contaminant concentration. Kinetic studies in fish revealed that GSM primarily accumulate in the muscle and skin, with the earthy-odor burden of fish contributed by the former, reaching 86.59 %. The uptake rate constant (kup), depuration rate constant (kde), and half-lives (t1/2) fell within the ranges of 0.737–3.534 L/(kg·h), 0.024–0.097 1/h, and 7.1–28.9 h, respectively. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for GSM in fish skin, muscle, and liver tissues were 105.79, 61.71, and 51.22 L/kg, respectively. GSM was effectively depurated by other tissues within 72 h, while 18.16 % remained in skin. The liver demonstrated the most accurate curve (R2=0.97), followed by skin and muscle, with the gill showing the worst simulation. This work offers insights into understanding the fate and mass transfer flux of trace odorants in environmental and biological phases.

Heavy metal contamination of aquatic environments adversely affects the health of aquatic organisms and consumption of fish contaminated with heavy metals poses serious health risks to humans. Among various strategies, probiotics (living microorganisms known to have beneficial effects on the host), which have been extensively applied in the aquaculture industry, could be helpful for heavy metal detoxification and remediation. Several probiotics, including Lactobacillus strains, exhibit heavy metal binding, high heavy metal tolerance, and other beneficial characteristics for the host. Notably, numerous probiotics have been reported to bind heavy metals and excrete them from the host. Various probiotic strains (Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Lactococcus, etc.) show beneficial effects in alleviating heavy metal toxicity in cultured fish species. Certain probiotic bacteria reduce the absorption and bioavailability of heavy metals by enhancing heavy metal detoxification and sequestration while preserving gut barrier function. This review summarises the toxic effects of selected heavy metals on the health of farmed fish and discusses the role of probiotic strains in remediating the consequential exposure-induced immune toxicity and oxidative stress. Moreover, we discussed the protective strategies of probiotics against heavy metal accumulation in various tissues and gut dysbiosis in fish to alleviate heavy metal toxicity in fish farming, thereby promoting a sustainable blue economy worldwide.

Process affected water and other industrial wastewaters are a major environmental concern. During oil sands mining, large amounts of oil sands process affected water (OSPW) are generated and stored in ponds until reclaimed and ready for surface water discharge. While much research has focused on organics in process waters, trace metals at high concentrations may also pose environmental risks. Phytoremediation is a cost effective and sustainable approach that employs plants to extract and reduce contaminants in water. The research was undertaken in mesocosm scale constructed wetlands with plants exposed to OSPW for 60 days. The objective was to screen seven native emergent wetland species for their ability to tolerate high metal concentrations (arsenic, cadmium, copper, chromium, copper, nickel, selenium, zinc), and then to evaluate the best performing species for OSPW phytoremediation. All native plant species, except Glyceria grandis, tolerated and grew in OSPW. Carex aquatilis (water sedge), Juncus balticus (baltic rush), and Typha latifolia (cattail) had highest survival and growth, and had high metal removal efficiencies for arsenic (81–87 %), chromium (78–86 %), and cadmium (74–84 %), relative to other metals; and greater than 91 % of the dissolved portions were removed. The native plant species were efficient accumulators of all metals, as demonstrated by high root and shoot bioaccumulation factors; root accumulation was greater than shoot accumulation. Translocation factor values were greater than one for Juncus balticus (chromium, zinc) and Carex aquatilis (cadmium, chromium, cobalt, nickel). The results demonstrate the potential suitability of these species for phytoremediation of a number of metals of concern and could provide an effective and environmentally sound remediation approach for wastewaters.

In vitro models based on permanent fish liver cell lines have proven to be versatile tools for examining chemical biotransformation and toxicity. However, their in vivo relevance remains uncertain due to their potentially de-differentiated phenotype. Here, we investigate whether a 3D cell culture environment can restore hepatocyte-like properties of the Rainbow trout liver cell line RTL-W1. Utilizing ultralow attachment (ULA) microwell plates, we achieved controlled sizing and extended culture (3 weeks) of spheroidal aggregate cultures (spheroids). RTL-W1 cells within the spheroids remained viable and metabolically active, as confirmed by the CellTiter-Glo 3D assay. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that spheroids exhibit tissue-like arrangements, such as interdigitations, cell-cell junctions, and endo- or exocytic activity at the cell-cell interface. They also displayed ultrastructural characteristics typical of metabolically active cells/hepatocytes, including abundant endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi apparatus, and mitochondria. RT-qPCR analysis showed upregulation of genes involved in xenobiotic and endogenous (lipid) metabolism in 3D cultures over time. Notably, for several genes, especially cyp1a, expression levels were significantly higher in spheroids than in monolayers cultured for the same duration. This was corroborated at the enzyme level by increased Cyp1a-dependent catalytic activity (EROD). Interestingly, increased Cyp1a expression did not lead to heightened susceptibility to benzo[a]pyrene toxicity, which requires bioactivation. However, RTL-W1 3D and 2D cell cultures exhibited differential susceptibility to toxicity from other model chemicals, such as the surfactant SDS and the metal copper (Cu). These findings support the hypothesis that RTL-W1 cells can re-differentiate to a hepatocyte-like phenotype when cultured in a 3D configuration and may exhibit distinct biological responses upon exposure to xenobiotics. Overall, this study advances our understanding of the potential of cell line-derived 3D in vitro models for research and providing more physiologically relevant data for regulatory contexts.

Background: Industrial growth and population expansion have led to increasing contamination of soils and plants by metals and metalloids. Toxic elements such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic persist in the environment, presenting significant risks to both ecosystems and human health. This editorial introduces the Virtual Special Issue, which compiles recent studies on the infiltration of these contaminants into soils and their bioaccumulation in plants. Objectives: This special issue aims to explore the interaction between human activities and metal/metalloid contamination, highlight key bioaccumulation mechanisms, transfer dynamics, and assess the risks posed to human health by contaminated soils and plants. Methods: The contributions to this issue include a variety of methodologies, both in laboratory and field settings, such as soil contamination assessments, bioaccumulation studies in plant species, and risk estimations for human exposure. Results: The compiled studies demonstrate significant contamination levels in soils and plants, especially in regions of Africa and Asia, where cadmium, mercury, zinc, and arsenic frequently exceed safety guidelines. These findings emphasize the urgent need for stricter contamination controls and further investigation in underrepresented regions. Conclusion: This issue provides crucial insights into metal and metalloid contamination in agricultural systems, offering evidence that can inform environmental policies and support the development of sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate contamination risks.

Fibrous plants with higher biomass, particularly industrial hemp, have ability to withstand and accumulate significant quantities of heavy metals from contaminated environments. The present study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of different levels (ratios) of macronutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) viz., NPK1NPK (1:1:1); NPK2NPK (2:1:1); NPK3NPK (3:1:2); NPK4NPK (4:1:2) on hemp growth and Cu contents under various levels of Cu stress (100, 400 and 800 mg kg−1 on dry soil basis using CuSO4·5H2O). Results revealed that by increasing the Cu stress, growth and biomass decreased linearly and lipid per oxidation and enzymatic antioxidants increased. Balanced application of NPK improved the biomass and decreased the membrane damage by the modulation of malonaldehyde contents. Maximum concentration of Cu in roots (377.47 ± 4.90 mg kg−1), shoots (137.45 ± 5.60 mg kg−1) and (150.07 ± 3.57 mg kg−1) was recorded at Cu3NPK2 treatment as compared to control. Maximum translocation factor (TF) and bioaccumulation coefficients (BAC) in the shoots and leaves of hemp plant were noticed where Cu stress was applied at the rate of 100 mg kg−1. However, BAC and TF were below 1. The NPK2 treatment enhanced biomass and increase Cu content both in leaves and stems, rather than the roots. Our study suggests that balanced application of NPK is a practicable approach to alleviate Cu stress and improve biomass production of industrial hemp plant. These findings indicate that optimum nutrient supply, under Cu stress, can maximize the growth potential and overall health of industrial hemp, making it a viable option for phytoremediation and sustainable agriculture on contaminated soils.

This comprehensive review investigates the dynamic landscape of trace elemental analysis methodologies applied to plants and food-based extracts. The exploration spans from the inception of techniques to the latest procedures, contributing to heightened precision and sensitivity in elemental detection. According to the WHO, herbal plants and medicine from varied soil compositions serve as crucial therapeutic agents for 70–80 % of the world's population. Yet, their susceptibility to trace element toxicity poses a significant risk to human health. Rising population and increased food demands have led to environmental pollution, contaminating the food chain through unintended activities like industrialization, mining, and pesticide production. The elemental composition of plants and derived extracts is central to comprehending nutritional profiles, evaluating product quality, and ensuring food safety. Methodological advancements, progressing from manual procedures to sophisticated technologies such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), neutron activation analysis (NAA), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP OES), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), are delineated. Recent strides in paper-based electrochemical sensors are highlighted for their distinctive capabilities and elucidation of associated advantages and limitations.Moreover, the review delves into innovative sample preparation methodologies, encompassing microwave-assisted digestion and solid-phase microextraction, to amplify the efficiency of elemental extraction and subsequent analysis. Integrating data analytics and machine learning in elucidating complex elementary datasets is explored, underscoring the potential for heightened accuracy and automation in trace elemental analysis. This review compiles literature data, summarizing sample preparation methods for various herbal parts (roots, soil, stems, bark, fruits, food). Standard protocols from WHO, United States Pharmacopeia-National Formulary (USP-FR), Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH) are considered. Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic are the primary toxic elements of concern in herbal medicines. This review furnishes valuable insights tailored for researchers, analysts, and policymakers actively involved in advancing the domain of trace elemental analysis in plants and food-based extract.

Elucidating the absorption and translocation of heavy metal(loid)s by common vegetables across different growth environments and stages is crucial for conducting accurate environmental risk assessments and for associated control. This study investigated temporal variations in the absorption and translocation capacities of pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in polluted soils during the plant growth cycle under greenhouse and open-field cultivation modes. Results showed high root metal(loid) bioconcentration factors and root-to-shoot translocation factors for Cd (0.25 and 1.44, respectively) and Zn (0.26 and 1.01), but low values for As (0.06 and 0.88) and Pb (0.06 and 0.87). The Cd concentration in the aerial edible parts peaked during the early slow growth period, whereas other heavy metal(loid)s peaked during the later stable maturity period. Root bioconcentration and root-to-shoot translocation factors did not significantly differ between cultivation modes. However, greenhouse cultivation exhibited lower average Cd and Zn concentrations in the edible parts and cumulative uptake amounts of most metal(loid)s than open-field cultivation during the typical harvest period spanning days 60 and 90. Short-term transitioning from open-field to greenhouse cultivation may reduce health risks associated with heavy metal(loid) intake via pak choi consumption. These findings facilitate sustainable agricultural practices and food safety management.

The accumulation of heavy metals in the edible tissue of the white spot sea cucumber, Holothuria poli, revealed the transfer of metal contaminants to sea cucumbers when produced below fish cages in a Mediterranean port area. Sea cucumbers were cultured on the seafloor directly below a fish cage at 0 m, then at 10 m and at 25 m away from the cage, as part of an open-water integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system, and then at a reference site over 1 km from the fish farm, over a one-year period. At the end of the study, sea cucumbers and seafloor sediments were sampled from the IMTA sites near the fish cages, except at 0 m due to mass sea cucumber mortalities within the first month of the study, and again at the reference site. The concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) were significantly higher in sediments near fish cages than the reference site. Localised enrichment from marine aquaculture could explain the significant concentration of metals in sediments below fish cages that are typically ascribed to their use in aquaculture. Arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg), which are not associated with commercial fish diets, did not vary between sites. Concentrations of iron (Fe), which is available in commercial diets, were similar near fish cages and at the reference site. The body wall/muscle tissue of the sea cucumber. H. poli revealed high concentrations of the essential metals Fe and Zn near fish cages and in natural sediments at the reference site. H. poli can regulate these essential metals that characterised the edible tissue of the sea cucumbers. Non-essential metals like Hg and Cd had the lowest concentrations of all analysed metals in the sea cucumber tissue. However, the bioaccumulation of toxic metals, Hg and As, reveal the bioavailability of these contaminants in sediments and the propensity of bottom-dwelling sea cucumbers to bioconcentrate these metals, when cultured under a commercial fish cage in IMTA and elsewhere in natural sediments in this industrial environment. Holothuria poli did not exhibit bioaccumulation of Cu, Cr, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn in its body wall/muscle tissue. The bioaccumulation of Hg and As reveal the need to account for the potential effects of farm-level variability throughout longer production cycles and bay-wide dynamics on sediment contamination and bioaccumulation in sea cucumbers until harvest. Site-specific dynamics in ports, whether natural or anthropogenic, can be expected to influence bioaccumulation of metal contaminants and therefore require long-term and fine resolution monitoring for better representation in open-water IMTA production.

Micro(nano)plastic, as a new type of environmental pollutant, have become a potential threat to the life and health of various stages of biology. However, it is not yet clear whether they will affect brain development in the fetal stage. Therefore, this study aims to explore the potential effects of nanoplastics on the development of fetal rat brains. To assess the allocation of NPs (25 nm and 50 nm) in various regions of the fetal brain, pregnant rats were exposed to concentrations (50, 10, 2.5, and 0.5 mg/kg) of PS-NPs. Our results provided evidence of the transplacental transfer of PS-NPs to the fetal brain, with a prominent presence observed in several cerebral regions, notably the cerebellum, hippocampus, striatum, and prefrontal cortex. This distribution bias might be linked to the developmental sequence of each brain region. Additionally, we explored the influence of prenatal exposure on the myelin development of the cerebellum, given its the highest PS-NP accumulation in offspring. Compared with control rats, PS-NPs exposure caused a significant reduction in myelin basic protein (MBP) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) expression, a decrease in myelin thickness, an increase in cell apoptosis, and a decline in the oligodendrocyte population. These effects gave rise to motor deficits. In conclusion, our results identified the specific distribution of NPs in the fetal brain following prenatal exposure and revealed that prenatal exposure to PS-NPs can suppress myelin formation in the cerebellum of the fetus.

Background: Dietary selenium (Se) has been shown to influence immunity in both humans and rats. It exerts its health effects via incorporation into selenoproteins involved in both innate and adaptive immunity. It is also involved in the synthesis and activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This study sought to investigate the effect of Se biofortified scent leaves (Ocimum gratissimum L.) on selected immunomodulatory and inflammatory markers in wistar rats. Methodology: Scent leaf plant was cultivated on Se fortified (0–0.1 %) soil. Upon maturity, the leaves were harvested and the Se and phenolic contents, as well as in vitro antioxidant properties were determined. Subsequently, dietary inclusions of the Se biofortified scent leaves were fed to rats. The experimental rats consist of control group fed basal diet, rats fed 2.5 % and 5.0 % dietary inclusions of unfortified scent leaves and rats fed 2.5 % and 5.0 % dietary inclusions of 0.05 % Se-fortified scent leaves. This was carried out for 30 days, after which selected immunomodulatory and inflammatory markers, as well as glutathione peroxidase activity (GPx) were quantified in the serum. Results: The vegetables bioaccumulated Se in the leaves up to 0.93 ± 0.05 mg/100 g d.w. The Se biofortified scent leaves exhibited significantly higher in vitro antioxidant properties, total phenol and flavonoid contents quantitatively and qualitatively. In experimental rats, it was observed that the 0.05 % Se biofortified scent leaves based-diets significantly increased the levels of the anti- inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10). Furthermore, there were significant increase in serum Immunoglobulins G and M in rats fed dietary inclusions of the Se biofortified leaves. Conclusion: The study suggests that Se biofortification at optimum level of 0.05 % increased phenolic content in scent leaf and improved rat´s anti-inflammatory and antibodies, hence making the vegetables candidate functional food with potential anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties.

Polystyrene nanoparticles are emerging as contaminants in freshwater environments, posing potential risks to amphibians exposed to extended periods of water contamination. Using tadpoles as a model, this study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of PS NPs. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (Py-GCMS) analysis revealed a concentration-dependent increase in polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) levels in tadpoles with escalating exposure concentrations. Following exposure to 100 nm fluorescent microspheres, fluorescence was observed in the intestines and gills, peaking at 48 hours. Histopathological analysis identified degenerative necrosis and inflammation in the liver, along with atrophic necrosis of glomeruli and tubules in the kidneys. These results indicate a discernible impact of PS NPs on antioxidant levels, including reduced superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, elevated glutathione content, and increased malondialdehyde levels. Electron microscopy observations revealed the infiltration of PS NPs into Kupffer's cells and hepatocytes, leading to visible lesions such as nuclear condensation and mitochondrial disruption. The primary objective of this research was to elucidate the adverse effects of prolonged PS NPs exposure on amphibians.

In the marine environment, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute one of the most pervasive and harmful types of organic pollutants. They pose an additional hazard to marine creatures' resilience due to ongoing climatic change. Therefore, determining their concentration and source is important for estimating their possible risks. Utilizing (GC–MS), we analyzed PAH levels in marine algal tissues along the Red Sea's Ras Gharib coastline. The present study covered the collection of seven Red Sea macroalgae namely; Sargassum cinereum, Caulerpa racemosa, Ulva intestinalis Linnaeus, 1753, Turbinaria ornata, Hormophysa cuneiformis, Ulva lactuca, and Cystoseira myrica) from the Ras Gharib coastline. Sixteen PAHs were found at quantities ranging from 159.67 to 261.57 ng/g in all of the examined marine algal tissues. The average concentration of the 16 PAHs was the highest in S. cinereum and the lowest in U. lactuca. The mean concentration of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) in S. cinereum was 74.12 parts per billion (ng g−1). Two- and three-ringed PAHs with a lower molecular weight amounted to 2.51 to 23.54% of all PAH components in algal tissues. The average contribution of the eight cancer-causing PAHs to the total TEQcarc of the investigated species was sequentially as follows: BaP (50.23%), BaA (32.18%), BbF (6.52%), BkF (5.20%), IP (4.50%), and Chr (2.00%). The results of the diagnostic ratios demonstrated that the primary causes of most PAHs were combined pyrogenic and petrogenic activities. This suggests employing these indicators to investigate the biological impacts of PAHs pollution and establish its bioavailability in the marine environment.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) are increasingly utilized in many products worldwide. Eventual release into the aquatic system poses various environmental hazards and raises concerns for aquatic life and public health. In the present study, the effects of waterborne ZnONP and dissolved Zn+2 (ZnSO4 7H2O) were investigated in Siganus rivulatus through experimental exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations (40, 200, and 400 µg/L) of Zn in both forms. Fish exposed to ZnONP exhibited a higher accumulation of zinc in their muscles, whereas exposure to Zn+2 ions led to elevated zinc levels in the gills and liver. The physiological and histopathological analyses revealed distinct responses between the two experimental groups. ZnONP exposure stimulated the antioxidant system, resulting in a significant elevation (1.7–2 folds) of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes in the gills. On the other hand, Zn+2 ions increased the levels of SOD, CAT, and Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymes 1.5–2.4 times in the liver, along with 1.9–2 folds higher lipid peroxidation (LPO) in both the liver and gills. Histological examination of the gills revealed lamellar fusions, degenerative alterations, and infiltration of melanomacrophagic centers, indicating the impact of both treatments. Similarly, the liver tissue showed cytoplasmic vacuolation and significant infiltration of melanomacrophagic centers engorged with brown spots. These histopathological changes were more severe in fish exposed to all concentrations of Zn+2 and in fish exposed to 400 µg/L of ZnONP. This study concludes that waterborne Zn+2 exhibited higher toxicity in fish liver and gills compared to ZnONP. However, the mechanisms of ZnONP uptake by fish tissues remain unclear and require further investigation.

The potential of microplastics to act as a vector for anthropogenic contaminants is of rising concern. However, directly quantitatively determining the vector effects of microplastics has been rarely studied. Here, we present a dual-dosing method that simulates the chemical bioaccumulation from soil and microplastics simultaneously, wherein unlabeled hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) were spiked in the soil and their respective isotope-labeled reference compounds were spiked on the polyethylene microplastics. The comparison of the bioavailability, i.e., the freely dissolved concentration in soil porewater and bioaccumulation by earthworm, between the unlabeled and isotope-labeled HOCs was carried out. Relatively higher level of bioavailability of the isotope-labeled HOCs was observed compared to the unlabeled HOCs, which may be attributed to the irreversible desorption of HOCs from soil particles. The average relative fractions of bioaccumulated isotope-labeled HOCs in the soil treated with 1 % microplastics ranged from 6.9 % to 46.4 %, which were higher than those in the soil treated with 0.1 % microplastics. Treatments with the smallest microplastic particles were observed to have the highest relative fractions of bioaccumulated isotope-labeled HOCs, with the exception of phenanthrene, suggesting greater vector effects of smaller microplastic particles. Biodynamic model analysis indicated that the contribution of dermal uptake to the bioaccumulation of isotope-labeled HOCs was higher than that for unlabeled HOCs. This proposed method can be used as a tool to assess the prospective vector effects of microplastics in complex environmental conditions and would enhance the comprehensive understanding of the microplastic vector effects for HOC bioaccumulation.

Given their pervasiveness in the environment, particularly in aquatic ecosystems, plastics are posing a growing concern worldwide. Many vertebrates and invertebrates in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems exhibit microplastic (MP) uptake and accumulation. Some studies have indicated the fatal impacts of MPs on animals and their possible transfer through food chains. Thus, it is crucial to study MP pollution and its impacts on environment-sensitive and globally threatened animal groups, such as amphibians, which also play an important role in the energy transfer between ecosystems. Unfortunately, research in this field is lacking and sources of organized information are also scarce. Hence, we systematically reviewed published literature on MPs in amphibians to fill the existing knowledge gap. Our review revealed that most of the previous studies have focused on MP bioaccumulation in amphibians, whereas, only a few research highlighted its impacts. We found that more than 80% of the studied species exhibited MP accumulation. MPs were reported to persist in different organs for a long time and get transferred to other trophic levels. They can also exhibit cytotoxic and mutagenic effects and may have fatal impacts. Moreover, they can increase the disease susceptibility of amphibians. Our study concludes the MPs as a potential threat to amphibians and urges increasing the scope and frequency of research on MP pollution and its impacts on this vulnerable animal group. We also provide a generalized method for studying MPs in amphibians with future perspectives and research directions. Our study is significant for extending the knowledge of MPs and their impacts on amphibians and guiding prospective research.

Modelling approaches to estimate the bioaccumulation of organic chemicals by earthworms are important for improving the realism in risk assessment of chemicals. However, the applicability of existing models is uncertain, partly due to the lack of independent datasets to test them. This study therefore conducted a comprehensive literature review on existing empirical and kinetic models that estimate the bioaccumulation of organic chemicals in earthworms and gathered two independent datasets from published literature to evaluate the predictive performance of these models. The Belfroid et al. (1995a) model is the best-performing empirical model, with 91.2% of earthworm body residue simulations within an order of magnitude of observation. However, this model is limited to the more hydrophobic pesticides and to the earthworm species Eisenia fetida or Eisenia andrei. The kinetic model proposed by Jager et al. (2003b) which out-performs that of Armitage and Gobas (2007), predicted uptake of PCB 153 in the earthworm E. andrei to within a factor of 10. However, the applicability of Jager et al.’s model to other organic compounds and other earthworm species is unknown due to the limited evaluation dataset. The model needs to be parameterised for different chemical, soil, and species types prior to use, which restricts its applicability to risk assessment on a broad scale. Both the empirical and kinetic models leave room for improvement in their ability to reliably predict bioaccumulation in earthworms. Whether they are fit for purpose in environmental risk assessment needs careful consideration on a case by case basis.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal associated with osteoporosis, liver, and kidney disease. The black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens may be exposed to Cd during the transformation of livestock manure. The BSF has a high tolerance to Cd. In the previous work of the laboratory, we found that vitamin E (VE) may play a role in the tolerance of BSF to Cd exposure. The main findings are as follows: The BSF larvae pretreated with exogenous VE had heavier body weight, lower content and toxicity of Cd under similar Cd exposure. Even in high Cd exposure at the concentrations of 300 and 700 mg/kg, the BSF larvae pretreated with exogenous VE at a concentration of 100 mg/kg still reduced the Cd toxicity to 85.33 % and 84.43 %, respectively. The best-fitting models showed that metallothionein (MT) content, oxidative damage (8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine content, malondialdehyde content), antioxidant power (total antioxidant power, peroxidase activity) had a great influence on content and toxicity of Cd bioaccumulated in the larvae. The degree of oxidative damage was reduced in the larvae with exogenous VE pretreatments. This variation can be explained by their changed MT content and increased antioxidant power because of exogenous VE. These results reveal the roles of VE in insects defense against Cd exposure and provide a new option for the prevention and therapy of damage caused by Cd exposure.

As a nondestructive means of environmental monitoring, bird feathers have been used to analyze levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in specific environments. In this study, feather samples from 10 waterbird species around Poyang Lake were collected, and a pretreatment method for PFASs in feathers was optimized. The results showed that a combined cleaning method using ultrapure water and n-hexane effectively removed external PFASs. Twenty-three legacy and emerging PFASs were identified in the feathers of waterbirds, of which hexafluoropropylene oxides (HFPOs), chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs), and sodium p-perfluorinated noneoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) were reported for the first time, with their concentrations ranging from 0.060–2.4 ng·g−1 dw, 0.046–30 ng·g−1 dw, and lower than the method detection limit to 30 ng·g−1 dw, respectively. Compound- and species-specific bioaccumulation of PFASs was observed in the feathers of different waterbird species, suggesting that different PFAS types can be monitored through the selection of different species. Moreover, the concentrations of most PFCAs (except perfluorobutyric acid), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and perfluorooctane sulfonamide (FOSA) were significantly positively correlated with δ15N (p < 0.05), while the concentrations of HFPOs, Cl-PFESAs, and OBS had significant positive correlations with δ13C. This indicates that the bioaccumulation of legacy and emerging PFASs in waterbird feathers is affected by their trophic level, feeding habits, and foraging area.

In this present study, an in vivo experiment was carried out to determine the tendencies of a naturally occurring high-phenolic compound red-onion skin extract (HPC-ROSE) and conventional N-Vinylcaprolactam (N-VCAP) kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) to bio-accumulate in offshore environment through the analysis of their uptake and depuration kinetics by a Fish-Chemical Model using Cyprinus carpio marine invertebrate. This test was performed in the laboratory in a flow through experimental set up according to the guidelines by [49] (Fish-chemical exposure test). The uptake duration was 10 days with a depuration period of twenty days. The inhibitor toxicity test was evaluated by determining the 50 % lethal concentration (LC50) as highlighted by OSPAR Commission protocols. The solubility of the inhibitors was determined by a column elution technique. Similarly, a proton-enabled nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) technique was used to measure the partitioning characteristics of the inhibitors in an immiscible mixture of octanol and water (Kow) by 1HNMR spectroscopy using a benchtop low-field NMR spectrometer. OSPAR Commission and ASTM standard protocols were used for the laboratory investigation of the static sediment toxicity tests. A reference chemical substance of known BCF and solubility (Ethyl Acetate, EtOAc) was used as control to check the experimental progression. The stock solution was prepared by solid phase desorption mechanisms. The HPC-ROSE does not constitute environmentally significant risk to aquatic life owing to its lower BCF values between 215 L/kg - 251.5L/Kg, Log-Kow of 1.2 and higher lethal concentration of 25140 mg/L. Unlike the NVCAP which is very toxic with lower lethal concentration of 1280 mg/L and higher BCF values in the range of 442.5L/Kg to 485 L/kg with Log-Kow of 1.5. Furthermore, Nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) is a simple and reliable method of estimating partition coefficient characteristics (Kow) because the obtained Log-Kow values showed good agreements with that of shake flask and high-performance liquid chromatography techniques. Also, the chemical concentration in water has an inverse relationship with uptake rate constant (K1) and steady-state bioconcentration factor (BCFss). Finally, the theoretically estimated BCFs were higher than the steady-state (BCFss) values that were obtained from laboratory experiments for the different inhibitor samples and at all concentrations. This is due to the route by which Log-Kow was estimated since most of the empirical models are usually one-factor model consisting of partition coefficient and BCF.

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in mangrove crabs has been reported and most of them are toxic to animals and potential human carcinogens. Given that the land crab Cardisoma armatum Herklots, 1951 is more consumed by surrounding populations, this study aimed to quantify the levels of metals in its tissues and to assess the human health risks. Soft tissues were isolated in adult crabs and frozen then; samples were dried, crushed and handled following the standard procedures. Human health risks were evaluated using some indices. Heavy metal levels in each tissue were shown in decreasing order: Fe > Zn > Al > Cu > Cd > Pb. Cadmium, lead and copper metals were in upper levels in the hepatopancreas (0.35, 0.19 and 7.88 mg/kg) whereas iron, aluminium and zinc were higher in muscles (129.30, 15.96 and 82.83 mg/kg). Most EDI values were apparently below the PTDI and CRLim values signifying that the consumption of C. armatum remains safe for consumers although, a limit in intake frequency might be required for children. For all metals, THQ and HI values were below the standard value 1 indicating no health risks in consumers due to the intake of single or several metals. Also, the carcinogenic risks for Cd and Pb metals are considered to be negligible because they are lower than 10−6. Overall, regarding the results, consumption of C. armatum seems harmless for human health in the study area.

Birds can be impacted by pollution but are seldom used as bioindicators. One exception involves the Dippers Cinclus spp., a genus of five passerines adapted uniquely to swim and dive in rivers on five continents to feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fishes. Here, we review the effectiveness of Dippers as pollution indicators while identifying further opportunities, caveats and uncertainties that are transferable to other indicator organisms.Dippers have been used as biodindicators i) through relationships linking their distribution, breeding performance and behaviour to river pollution through effects on prey quality and quantity; ii) where contaminants occur in their eggs, tissues, faeces or regurgitates, notably metals (Hg, Se), persistent pollutants (e.g. PCBs, PBDEs, DDE, HEOD) and microplastics. Most data are from C. cinclus in Europe and C. mexicanus in North America.While some pollution effects on Dipper distribution or fitness are well-evidenced, particularly acidification, the resulting impairments are not sufficient to diagnose the source of impact without additional data on water quality or prey abundance. Dippers in these cases provide a general rather than definitive indication of pollution.For contaminants, Dippers have revealed the distribution of specific pollutants at scales ranging from point-sources and regions to different continents. Influences of land use, trophic pathways, diet-shifts, contaminant transport, intergenerational transfer and trends through time have all been identified and supported by detailed knowledge of prey use, territoriality, dispersal, migration, life history, isotopic signatures and energetics.We suggest opportunities to expand the role of Dippers as bioindicators into other locations (Asia and South America), other influences on water quality (e.g. agriculture, wastewater), other contaminants (e.g. PFAs, pharmaceuticals) and through developments in modern biology such as ‘omics. Initial data also show that Dippers could integrate the effects on rivers of habitat modification, flow modification and climate change by indicating effects both directly and through interactions with other multiple stressors. This group of birds illustrates how fundamental ecological information aids the development of bioindicators but reveals the importance of using complementary environmental data when diagnosing bioindicator response. We suggest these are important lessons for ecological indicators more generally.

The presence of trace metals in aquatic ecosystems can have detrimental effects on fish survival. The Tanguar haor, a Ramsar conservation wetland, receives sediment and water from multiple transboundary rivers. However, there have been limited studies on the metal concentrations in fish species in this sediment-rich wetland. This study aimed to analyze the concentrations of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in water, sediment, and fish tissues. Higher concentrations of Cd and Pb were found in the water and sediment. All these metals were detected in eight fish species, including benthic and pelagic species. Among them, Systomus sarana, a pelagic fish that also consumes benthic organisms, exhibited a higher metal pollution index than other fish, particularly benthic species. The release of higher metal concentrations from sediment into the water has the potential to impact the accumulation of metals in fish. Synopsis: This study on metal concentrations in fish species will aid policymaking on ecotoxicology research for transboundary river-connected wetlands.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that poses a threat to food safety via the ingestion of food products with Cd. The uptake of Cd by the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao) has gained attention after the European Union set limits for Cd in chocolate products, the main commodity produced from cacao beans. In this study, we analyzed levels of Cd in soils and plant tissues across five cacao farms in the Piura region of Peru to identify the origins of Cd accumulation, and the natural and human factors controlling its concentration. Our results show that Cd levels varied in the order: leaves (1.25 mg kg−1) > beans (0.78 mg kg−1) > soils at 5 cm (0.68 mg kg−1) > soils at 20 cm (0.6 mg kg−1). Our findings suggest that the higher concentration of Cd in plant tissues and surface soils can be explained by readily available Cd from fertilizers and a litter layer being absorbed, cycled, and accumulated by the plant. Moreover, even when fertilizers are within regulatory limits, their continuous application, combined with the biocycling of Cd, may lead to high Cd concentrations in beans and leaves. Conversely, farms on alluvial soils and more stable topographic positions display higher soil and plant Cd concentrations. Likewise, farms located at lower altitudes, with higher contributing areas are more likely to receive Cd transported through sediments and water in the river network. Our results also suggest that variations in the underlying geology and soil mineralogy may be a source of potentially Cd bearing sediments. Overall, this study indicates that the high levels of Cd in plants in the study area are the result of a combined mechanism involving plant bioaccumulation and high Cd in fertilizers for the most part, with a minor contribution from potential Cd bearing minerals in sediments of alluvial soils.

Background: Mercury is one of the metals responsible for environmental contamination and the intoxication of human beings, mainly due to the increasing use of mercury in the formation of amalgam, a metallic alloy formed by the reaction between mercury and metallic gold, which is often drained into the aquatic environment. Aim: Therefore, this study evaluated 20 species of fish and seafood, commercialized in the metropolitan region of Belém (Pará, Brazil). Materials and methods: Mercury was quantified using DMA. The limits of detection and quantification obtained were 0.027 and 0.091 μg g-1, respectively. The fresh fish muscle samples (n = 3) were weighed in a nickel boat and placed in the autosampler of the DMA for the quantification of total Hg (THg). Method accuracy was realized and confirmed using fish protein-certified reference material for trace metals (DORM-4). Results: The mercury concentration (THg) of fish samples ranged from 0.003 to 0.209 μg g-1, pratiqueira, and codfish, respectively. Assessment of health risks associated with the ingestion of mercury present in fish was carried out from the Estimated weekly intakes (EWI), Target hazard quotient (THQ), and Maximum Safe Consuming Quantity (MSCQ). Consumption of fish and seafood may pose a non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk. Conclusion: The value of THg concentrations in all species was within the regulatory limits for fish, except Corvina fish sample that was below the limit of detection. The RiskHg was less than 1, showing a low risk of mercury exposure. The PTWI ranged from 0.005 to 0.323 for a consumption of 173 g of fish. The THQ values found were lower than 1, showing that the samples studied do not have a carcinogenic effect when consumed. The MSCQ values obtained were considered high, since the index is related to the mass of 25 g of fish consumed daily. This study showed the importance of monitoring and assessing the health risk of mercury in fish and seafood consumed by the population.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic heavy metals for human health. It can be present in multiple food products, including cocoa cultivated in regions with high soil Cd concentrations. A strategy to minimize Cd uptake by cacao trees is using cadmium-tolerant bacteria (CdtB) and filamentous fungi (CdtF) to reduce Cd availability in soils. We isolated culturable CdtB and CdtF from different locations in a cocoa-producing region in central Colombia. A total of 42 CdtB and 30 CdtF morphotypes were isolated from locations with varying natural Cd concentrations. In vitro characterizations showed that in addition to their resistance to Cd, bacteria and fungi are involved in the nutrient cycling of N, P, and C in the soil. Bacterial morphotypes from genera Pseudomonas and Burkholderia grew in concentrations up to 140 mg kg−1 Cd. Among the isolated fungi, P. igniaria, Metarhizium sp., and Annulohypoxylon sp. were the most resistant, with the highest average Cd bioaccumulation, Cd remotion, and tolerance. We present new information about the native culturable bacterial morphotypes associated with cacao plants and, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Cd-TF associated with cacao crops. Our results expand the knowledge about culturable CdtB and CdtF in cacao-cultivated soils and their interaction with key soil elements, with the potential to develop integrated soil management strategies.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have wide applications in agriculture, industry, and domestic uses. Unfortunately, they are resistant to photolytic biodegradation and exist for a very long time in the environment. Their bioaccumulation in humans and aquatic biota could lead to severe problems. In this study, surface water samples were collected from four sampling points along the Okura River in the Eastern Senatorial District of Kogi State, Nigeria. They were extracted with methylene chloride, reduced to small volume using a rotatory evaporator, subjected to clean-up, and analyzed with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results show that the level of OCPs in SP1, SP2, SP3 and SP4 are between ND - 0.1357 ± 6.3 × 10−5 mg/L, ND - 0.0767 ± 1.3 × 10−3, ND - 0.046 ± 7.5 × 10−4, and ND - 0.0211 ± 2.6 × 10−3 respectively. The health risk assessment was evaluated using United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) methods for hazard quotient (HQ), average daily dose (ADD) and cancer risk (CR). The HQ, ADD and CR are less than the USEPA recommended risk permissible limit of 1, 10−4 and 10−6 respectively. Therefore, there is no health risk. However, the concentrations of the analytes detected were slightly above USEPA standard maximum limit of 100 ng/L. Therefore, all anthropogenic activities that could lead to the disposal of agrochemical wastes into Okura River should be controlled, for the provision of quality water for the inhabitants of this river.

The synergetic and interactive effects of microplastics (MPs) as potential carriers of pollutants and pathogens have a manifold impact on human health and aquatic biota. The present study delineates the role of MPs in transporting heavy metals to the black clam, Villorita cyrpinoides of Vembanad Lake in South India. MPs in water (3.41 ± 1.87 items/L), sediment (154.6 ± 45.4 items/kg) and within clams (0.87 ± 0.34 items/g tissue) showed considerable variation based on their physical and chemical characteristics, which in turn reflected its differential potential to carry heavy metals. Though the levels of heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Pb) within the clam and those carried by MPs were less than the hazardous limits, the concentration of Cd within the clam and MP was found to have a positive correlation. Though the present levels of heavy metal pollution in the lake do not pose a direct threat to humans, anthropogenic interventions and reduced water flow have turned the lower reaches of the lake into a sink of heavy metals. Hence with MP concentration increasing it is worth investigating how their future interactions with heavy metals and other pollutants would pose a risk to living organisms.

The application of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a promising tool to analyze the spatial distribution of organic contaminants in organisms and thereby improve the understanding of toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic processes. MSI is a common method in medical research but has been rarely applied in environmental science. In the present study, the suitability of MSI to assess the spatial distribution of organic contaminants and their biotransformation products (BTPs) in the aquatic invertebrate key species Gammarus pulex was studied. Gammarids were exposed to a mixture of common organic contaminants (carbamazepine, citalopram, cyprodinil, efavirenz, fluopyram and terbutryn). The distribution of the parent compounds and their BTPs in the organisms was analyzed by two MSI methods (MALDI- and DESI-HRMSI) after cryo-sectioning, and by LC-HRMS/MS after dissection into different organ compartments. The spatial distribution of contaminats in gammarid tissue could be successfully analyzed by the different analytical methods. The intestinal system was identified as the main site of biotransformation, possibly due to the presence of biotransforming enzymes. LC-HRMS/MS was more sensitive and provided higher confidence in BTP identification due to chromatographic separation and MS/MS. DESI was found to be the more sensitive MSI method for the analyzed contaminants, whereas additional biomarkers were found using MALDI. The results demonstrate the suitability of MSI for investigations on the spatial distribution of accumulated organic contaminants. However, both MSI methods required high exposure concentrations. Further improvements of ionization methods would be needed to address environmentally relevant concentrations.

During the development of nanotechnology, the production of many substances containing nanoparticles leads to the release of various nanoparticles into the environment, including the water ecosystem. The main goal of the current research was to study the ultrastructural characteristics of the entry and bioaccumulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the small intestine of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758), as well as the pathomorphological changes in the fish organism. Two different doses (10 and 100 mg) of Fe3O4 nanoparticles were fed to fingerlings for 7 days and then intestinal samples were taken and studied. It was found that the extent of damages was boosted within the increment of nanoparticle concentration. The sequence and bioaccumulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the small intestine of fish occurred as below: firstly, the nanoparticles passed into microvilli located in the apical part of enterocytes in the mucosa layer, from there into the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells, including cytoplasmatic organelles (nucleus, mitochondria, lysosomes, fat granules), and then into a lamina propria of the mucosa of the small intestine and passed into the endothelium of the blood vessels and to the erythrocytes of the vessels which located in the lumen. It was determined that although the nanoparticles were up to 30 nm in size, only particles with a maximum size of 20 nm could penetrate the intestinal wall. Thus, the release of Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the environment in high doses has a negative effect on the living ecosystem, including the body of fish living in the water.

Tannery effluent can cause serious environmental pollution due to its high levels of chromium, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and other pollutants like nitrogen, phosphorus, dyes, sulphur etc. The problem of chromium in tannery effluent is that it is highly toxic and can be hazardous to aquatic life, wildlife, and human health. High levels of chromium can disrupt the ecological balance of a water body, leading to problems such as reduced aquatic life diversity. Additionally, chromium can enter the food chain from water sources and can potentially have negative effects on humans. Therefore, comprehensive waste management plans are highly required to reduce the environmental impact of tannery effluent. The conventional physicochemical methods for removing Cr from wastewater may generate a vast amount of sludge leading to sludge disposal issues. Besides, these techniques require huge capital investments, and the applied chemicals may cause secondary pollution. On the other hand, the biological removal of Cr from wastewater is sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. Biological means of Cr remediation involve plant-based and microorganism-based approaches, including bacteria, fungi, and microalgae. This review emphasizes the adverse effects of chromium on human health and its remediation processes based on microalgae. Microalgal biomass can remove heavy metals, including Cr, in either a living (bioaccumulation) or non-living (biosorption) state. There are a number of microalgae species that can remove chromium from wastewater. Among them several algae species, including Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus sp., Consortium of Phormidium sp. and Chlorella sp., Chlorella sorokiniana, and Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina), have found successful in removing Cr in the range of 100–73.5% from tannery wastewater. Additionally, it can mitigate CO2, can remove phosphorus, nitrogen, COD and BOD from tannery effluent, improving its quality to be discharged into the environment. Thereby, the use of microalgae is thought to be a viable substitute for traditional techniques to mitigate the problem of environmental pollution caused by tannery effluent. However, treatment efficiency can be depending on several factors such as nature and amount of effluent to be treated, environmental conditions, contact time, and amount of optimal algal biomass.

Around the world, hen meat and eggs are very widely consumed in dishes like curries, processed cuisine, and fast food. The ingestion of contaminated eggs poses a biochemical risk from the perspective of food safety due to the presence of heavy metal and trace element residues in hen eggs. The purpose of this study was to examine the concentrations of heavy metals in eggs from commercial chicken farms from capital city and hens from local area in order to identify the most significant heavy metal concentration in hen eggs. The levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs, were determined in the liver and salt gland of 19 loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta Linnaeus, Cheloniidae) stranded along the coasts of the south Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy, from 2019 to 2021. The 16 EPA’s priority PAHs were determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The average values of ΣPAHs in liver, 139 ± 55.0, were exceptionally high and up to one hundred times those of literature and appeared even more worrying in salt gland, 320 ± 97.6 ng/g, w.w. Naphthalene was the predominant contributor to PAHs richness and accounted for 90.0% and 93.7% of ΣPAHs in the two matrices, highlighting the petrogenic source of exposure. An overall higher bioaccumulation of NAP, more than two-fold, was detected in salt gland and especially in female and adults. Data of PAHs richness highlighted a potential risk of neoplastic disease development and that anthropogenic activities may seriously impair healthy state conditions of C. caretta. populations in south Tyrrhenian Sea.

Squid is traded globally as an important food resource. However, the occurrence of carcinogenic halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) in squid and the risk of their transfer through trade is little understood or recognized. Here, we comprehensively evaluated the occurrence and risk transfer by quantifying the congener-specific concentrations of HPAHs in 121 squid samples collected from the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. This was the first time that nine of the 36 target chlorinated and brominated PAH congeners had been detected in squid. The HPAHs exhibited growth-dilution effects in the squid. The lipid content of squid was the most significant factor influencing HPAH bioaccumulation, while differences in squid growth and local ocean contamination influenced by geographical distribution also affected HPAH bioaccumulation. The redistribution and risk transfers of HPAHs in squid as a food could be affected by international trading. The cancer risks from squid consumption in China and Mexico were increased by 50 % and 30 %, respectively, because of international squid trading.

Osmoprotectants are a diverse group of low molecular weight organic solutes that can help in balancing the osmotic potential in plants surviving under salinity stress. These osmoprotectants are accumulated in cytoplasmic vacuoles to enable salinity stress tolerance in plants. Recent advances in plant abiotic stress research have focused on osmoprotectants as a promising area for progress. Extensive research endeavors have been dedicated to deciphering the intricate mechanisms underlying abiotic stress management in saline plants. Scientists have delved into diverse pathways, investigating the physiological intricacies as well as the genomic makeup of these resilient plants. However, the complex nature of saline plants poses formidable obstacles to conducting genomic and transcriptomic studies. Nevertheless, amidst these challenges, one area of research has emerged as a captivating focal point: the exploration of osmoprotectants. An investigation on osmoprotectants holds tremendous potential in unraveling how saline plants effectively navigate and counteract stress, allowing them to thrive in demanding environments. Salinity stress alters protein structure in saline plants, resulting in post-transcriptional modifications that produce various types of osmoprotectants, which get synthesized and accumulated in varying amounts in different plant species. Individual studies on groups of plants that can withstand salinity stress, such as halophytes, mangroves, and marine algae, have been conducted, but a more comprehensive comparative understanding of saline plants can be developed through the collection and analysis of this data. This article aims to explore the diversity of osmoprotectants accumulation, influencing factors, and structural and metabolic origin in saline plants.

The current study explored whether ALA could prevent testis Pb accumulation and Pb-induced oxidative testicular toxicity in rats. Adult male rats were randomly divided and administered ALA (25 mg/kg/day) and/or Pb (Pb acetate, 20 mg/kg/day) in Control group, ALA group, Pb group, and ALA + Pb group for 4 weeks consecutively. Pb exposure significantly increased Pb accumulation in the testes and blood of Pb-exposed rats compared to the control. Pb caused marked deficits in sperm count, motility along with elevated abnormal sperm cells, while serum testosterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and leutenizing hormone (LH) levels reduced prominently in comparison to the control. It remarkably depressed the testicular activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as levels of interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-10 (IL-10), whereas malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) increased significantly compared to the control. The levels of caspase-3, capsase-9, and the PCR gene expression of Bax and Bcl2 were adversely altered with alterations in testis histology. Interestingly, the co-treatment with ALA blocks Pb accumulation in the testis and blood. It inhibited the Pb-induced alterations in reproductive indices and reversed the oxidative stress-mediated inflammatory stress, apoptotic signaling and histopathological abrasions. The findings reveal that ALA could abrogate Pb-induced testicular toxicity through blocking testicular oxidative inflammation and apoptosis in rats.

Chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is a presentative diamide pesticide utilized in agricultural area and as well as rice-fish co-culture system for pest control. However, the understanding of toxic effects of CAP on fish species is still incomplete. In the present study, we performed an integrated study of the acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of CAP on the crucian carp, Carassius carassius, a fish species widely distributed in freshwater area in China and commonly farmed in the rice-fish co-culture systems. Besides, biochemical changes, transcriptional responses and gut microbiota of fish were investigated upon sub-chronic CAP exposure. The results showed that CAP is low toxic to crucian carp with a 96 h LC50 of 74.824 mg/L, but has considerable accumulation in the fish muscles when exposed to 3 mg/L of CAP for 14 d and still detectable after 18 d recovery in fresh water. For sub-chronic test, fish were exposed to CAP at 0, 0.3, 3 and 30 mg/L respectively for 14 d. CAP induced oxidative stress and detoxification inhibition in the liver of fish by decreasing antioxidative and detoxicated enzymes activities and downregulating relevant genes expression. In addition, disrupted gut flora composition was found in all experimental groups by the 16 S rRNA sequencing data, indicating the gut microbiota dysbiosis in crucian carp and potential adverse host effect. All the results suggest that CAP at sublethal concentrations has prominent toxic effect on crucian carp and more attentions should be paid especially using directly in an integrated aquaculture system.

Shrimp and Crab, important sources of protein, are currently being adversely affected by the rising industrialization, which has led to higher levels of heavy metals. The goal of this study was to evaluate the health risks of contamination associated with nine heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Ni, As, Al, and Fe) in two species of shrimp (Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Metapenaeus monoceros) and one species of crab (Scylla serrata) that were collected from the Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat areas of Bangladesh. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used for the study. The results showed that all metal concentrations in shrimp and crab samples were below the recommended level, indicating that ingestion of these foods would not pose any substantial health risks to individuals. To evaluate the non-carcinogenic health risks, the target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were determined, and the target cancer risk (TR) was utilized to evaluate the carcinogenic health risks. From the health point of view, this study showed that crustaceans obtained from the study sites were non – toxic (THQ and HI < 1), and long-term, continuous intake is unlikely to pose any significant health hazards (TR = 10−7-10−5) from either carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic effects.

Surface water pollution caused by the discharge of effluents from industrial estates has become a major concern for Dhaka (Bangladesh). This study aims to have a concise look at the severe river water pollution, mainly from effluents discharged from the tannery village. Effluent samples were collected from five ejected points, including the central effluent treatment plant (CETP), twenty adjacent river water, and two pond water nearby Hemayetpur, Savar. Thirty-one parameters have been observed at these sampling points for three seasons, from April 2021 to January 2022. The results obtained from water quality indices, i.e., water quality index (WQI), entropy water quality index (EWQI), and irrigation water quality index (IWQI), show that most studied surface water samples ranked “unsuitable” for consumption, irrigation, and anthropogenic purposes. The highest health risk was observed downstream of Hemayetpur city at the Savar CETP discharge site, indicating higher levels of heavy metal in the river water following the tannery village. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human health risks could be triggered mainly by water consumption as concentrations of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) exceeded the upper benchmark of 1 × 10−4 for adults and children. The results of the carcinogenic risk assessment revealed that children were more vulnerable to health hazards, and quick corrective action is required to control the increased levels of heavy metals at all sample locations. Therefore, through bioaccumulation, human health and the environment are affected in these areas. Using river water for consumption, household work, or even irrigation purposes is not advisable. This study's result highlighted that properly implementing compatible policies and programs is required to improve effluent treatment methods and provide biodegradability to the Dhaleshwari River.

Wild European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is one of the most important freshwater fish species, in Sweden, due to its widespread and his value for recreational fishing. Little it is known regarding the biodistribution of naturally occurring radionuclides such as 238U, 234U, 226Ra, 210Po in perch. Therefore, in this study, perches from five lakes located in different counties in Sweden were collected to investigate the biodistribution of 238U, 234U, 226Ra, 210Po and 137Cs in organs and tissues of perch as well as their radiological impact. The results showed that uranium radionuclides ranged between 0.1 and 6 Bq/kg with an average value of 1.1 ± 1.5 Bq/kg. 226Ra varied from 0.4 to 8 Bq/kg with a mean concentration of 1.7 ± 1.9 Bq/kg. The ranged of 210Po was 0.5 – 250 Bq/kg, with an average value of 24 ± 52 Bq/kg. On the other hand, the highest activity concentration of 137Cs, 151 ± 1 Bq/kg, was detected in muscle samples of perch from Redsjösjön lake. For uranium radionuclides and 226Ra uptake from water is the main source whereas for 210Po and 137Cs the uptake is controlled by the perch diet. Regarding naturally occurring radionuclides, the perch tended to accumulated uranium radionuclides in fins, gills, and skin; 226Ra in bones, fins and skin and 210Po in the organs linked to digestive system. Finally, in case of consumption, it is advised the consumption of skinned fillets of perch due to the higher bioaccumulation of the radionuclides investigated in the skin and scales.

Activities of artisanal mining pose ecological as well as health challenges through the release of heavy metals into the environment. This study assessed the potential risk of heavy metals in some selected vegetables at an artisanal gold mining site at Moseaso in the Wassa-Amenfi West District of Ghana. A total of 40 soil samples were collected from the study area at depth of 20 cm using a soil auger. At each site two each of the selected vegetables (tomatoes, spring onion, and lettuce) were sampled from the farms. Also, 9 water samples were also taken at sections of the stream (upstream, midstream, and downstream) for the analysis of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The results of the study revealed that the mean concentration of As (22.92 mg/kg), Cd (5.41 mg/kg), Pb (98.01 mg/kg), and Hg (0.81 mg/kg) in soils from the artisanal gold mining sites were all above the stipulated limits. The mean values of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg in the stream water were beyond the stipulated limit of 0.01, 0.03, 0.01, and 0.03 mg/l, respectively. Also, all the examined heavy metals in the selected food crops were above the reference limit. The bioaccumulation factor in the food crops was less than 1 except for cadmium which had a BF>1 in tomatoes, spring onion, and lettuce. The cancer risk assessment also revealed that, with the exception of Pb, all the heavy metals considered were above the USEPA-safe prescriptions of 1.0 × 10−6 to 1.0 × 10−4 for both adults and children. Based on the results, it can be recommended that the dietary intake of vegetables grown from the study site is not safe and poses severe health and environmental threats.
