The composition of atmospheric precipitation, an important criterion considered to account for air pollution, is usually determined with respect to wet precipitation and dry precipitation, or as bulk deposition in combined form. Although rainwater quality should be continuously monitored in order to understand the extent of air pollution, such investigation lacks attention in Sri Lanka. This study was thus aimed to determine the composition of bulk deposition collected weekly for a period of eleven months from February to December 2019, in three sampling locations; namely the University of Peradeniya (UOP), Kandy City Central (KCC) and Polgolla. Parameters quantitatively determined, rainfall, pH, conductivity, salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, anions: Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, F−, PO43− and trace metals: Zn, Fe, Al, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cr, using standard analytical methods indicated that the KCC site showed the overall highest degree of air pollution followed by UOP and Polgolla sites. Nevertheless, no acid rain occurrences were observed during the sampling period in any of the three sites according to pH measurements. Anions of bulk deposition showed the sequence Cl−> SO42− > NO3−in all three sites with Cl−and SO42- being dominant anions. Furthermore, trace metals of bulk deposition showed the sequence, Zn > Fe > Al > Mn > Cu > Pb, in all three sites. Bulk precipitation data analyzed using Pearson correlation showed high positive significant correlations between conductivity and salinity, conductivity and TDS, and salinity and TDS, among all water quality parameters. Among trace metals, the highest positive significant correlation was found to be between Fe and Mn at the UOP Site. The highest positive significant correlation was between Al and Zn at the KCC site. No correlation between trace metals was found at the Polgolla Site.

Atmospheric nutrient deposition plays a crucial role in supplying nutrients to forests on poor soils, making it a key factor in maintaining nutrient stocks and forest productivity. We compared total atmospheric deposition in production forests of European beech (Fagus sylvatica), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) by measuring bulk deposition and throughfall while accounting for canopy exchange. We assessed the differences in total deposition resulting from forest management practices such as high-thinning, shelterwood and clearcutting, on forest structure for both macronutrients and micronutrients in areas exposed to high nutrient deposition. We demonstrate that total nutrient deposition is highest in Douglas fir stands and lowest in Scots pine stands, primarily due to differences in dry deposition. The total deposition in forest exceeds national estimates because nutrient deposition in forests was higher than expected compared to more open areas. Canopy openness strongly influences the total deposition of all nutrients except phosphorus (P). Total deposition increases by a factor of 2.2 when moving from clearcuts to closed forests, with the extent of the increase varying among tree species and nutrients. Additionally, total deposition fluctuates between seasons, revealing clear seasonal patterns in both throughfall and canopy exchange. Our results suggest that the effective capture of potentially growth-limiting nutrients (such as K, Ca, Mg and Mn) in closed and thinned production forests significantly contributes to the resilience of forests on nutrient-poor, acidified soils. Study region: The current study evaluates the isotopic and chemical compositions of rainfall from central to leeward Hawaiʻi Island, an area characterized by the interactions of Pacific trade wind flow with two 4,000-meter high mountains as well as one of the largest natural emitters of sulfur dioxide on the planet. Study focus: Our study collected cumulative rainfall samples at regular intervals over a 28-month period from 20 stations spanning a range of elevations across this region and determined average isotopic and dissolved ion compositions in those samples. The study period included an extreme weather event (Hurricane Lane), a major volcanic eruption at Kīlauea in 2018, and the nearly complete cessation of long-term volcanic emissions following that eruptive event. New hydrological insights: to the Region Consistent with previous literature, results show long-term variability through our establishment of an enhanced local meteoric water line (LMWL) for West Hawaiʻi. We hypothesize the two LMWL represent ends of a spectrum, due to the variability in atmospheric and climate processes in this region. Additionally, results of stable isotope compositions and bulk ion deposition highlight how extreme events, such as volcanic eruptions and hurricanes, can affect the chemistry of precipitation. Sulfate concentrations in bulk precipitation decreased by a mean of 70 % (p = 0.032) after the 2018 Kīlauea eruption ceased. The results from this study can be used to better quantify and characterize precipitation, which is the ultimate source of Hawai‘i’s groundwater.

The number of studies dealing with airborne microplastics (MPs) is increasing but sampling and sample treatment are not standardized, yet. Here, a fast and reliable method to characterize MPs is presented. It involves the study of two passive sampling devices to collect atmospheric bulk deposition (wet and dry deposition) and three digestion methods (two alkaline-oxidative and an oxidative) to treat the samples. The alkaline-oxidative method based on KOH and NaClO was selected for a mild organic matrix digestion. In addition, some operational parameters of a high-throughput quantum cascade laser-based infrared device (LDIR) were optimized: an effective automatic tiered approach to differentiate fibres from particles (>90 % success in validation) and a criterion to establish positive matches when comparing an unknown spectrum against the spectral database (proposed match index > 0.85). The procedural analytical recoveries were very good for particles (82-90 %) and slightly lower for fibres (62-73 %). Finally, the amount and type of MPs deposited at a sub-urban area NW Spain were evaluated. Most common polymers were Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The deposition rates ranged 98-1220 MP/m 2 /day, ca. 1.7 % of the total collected particles. Atmospheric deposition is an important pathway for the input of anthropogenic and natural nutrients to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. However, previous measurements focused mainly on hotspot locations, ignoring the fact that the deposition magnitudes of various nutrient species (e.g., nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P)) at a national scale should be investigated jointly. To better characterize national scale bulk deposition, precipitation samples were collected at 41 sites across China from September 2015 to August 2016 and September 2017 to August 2018. The bulk deposition fluxes of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) over the network were 27.5 kg N ha -1 yr -1 and 0.92 kg P ha -1 yr -1 , respectively. Contributions of NH 4 + , NO 3 - , and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) to TN averaged 32%, 32%, and 36%, respectively. Significant spatial and seasonal variations in concentrations and deposition fluxes of all nutrient species were observed reflecting effects of local reactive nitrogen (Nr) and P emissions and rainfall amount. Major sources were energy resource consumption for NO 3 - , agricultural activities for NH 4 + , and a mixed contribution of both anthropogenic and natural sources for DON and TP. Atmospheric N and P deposition represent important external nutrient inputs to ecosystems and a high ratio of TN to TP (29.9) may induce relative P-limitation and further increase the risk of eutrophication. In a recent publication in the journal Science of the Total Environment, Zhu et al. (2015) reported the composition, spatial patterns, and factors influencing atmospheric wet nitrogen (N) deposition based on one year's data from 41-monitoring sites in China. We suspect their results may largely underestimate dissolved organic N (DON) but overestimate total particulate N (TPN) in wet deposition due to the uncertainty resulting from the sampling, storage and analysis methods in their study. Our suspicions are based mainly on our experience from earlier measurements and the literature. We therefore suggest that enhanced data quality control on atmospheric N deposition measurements should be taken into account in future studies., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. With planned expansion of oil sands facilities, there is interest in being able to characterize the magnitude and extent of deposition of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) of Alberta. A study was undertaken using a bulk collection system to characterize wintertime atmospheric deposition of selected inorganic and organic contaminants in the AOSR. The study was carried out from January to March 2012 at two sampling sites near (within a 20 km circle of oil sands development) and two sampling sites distant (>45 km) to oil sands development. Triplicate bulk samplers were used to estimate precision of the method at one distant site. Monthly deposition samples were analyzed for 36 metals, ultra-low mercury, and 25 PAHs (including alkylated, and parent PAH). At the two sites located within 20 km of oil sands development, 3-month wintertime integrated deposition for some priority metals, alkylated and parent PAH were higher compared to distant sites. Deposition fluxes of metals and PAH were compared to other available bulk deposition studies worldwide. Median bulk measurement uncertainties of metals and both PAH classes were 26% and within ±15%, respectively suggesting that the bulk sampling method is a potential alternative for obtaining future direct measures of wintertime metals and PAH deposition at locations without access to power in the AOSR., (Crown Copyright © 2014.
