Abstract

Marine gateways play a critical role in the exchange of water, heat, salt and nutrients between oceans and seas. As a result, changes in gateway geometry can significantly alter both the pattern of global ocean circulation and associated heat transport and climate, as well as having a profound impact on local environmental conditions. Mediterranean-Atlantic marine corridors that pre-date the modern Gibraltar Strait, closed during the Late Miocene and are now exposed on land in northern Morocco and southern Spain. The restriction and closure of these Miocene connections resulted in extreme salinity fluctuations in the Mediterranean, leading to the precipitation of thick evaporites. This event is known as the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC). The evolution and closure of the Mediterranean-Atlantic gateways are a critical control on the MSC, but at present the location, geometry and age of these gateways are still highly controversial, as is the impact of changing Mediterranean outflow on Northern Hemisphere circulation. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the Late Miocene gateways and the nature of Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange as deduced from published studies focussed both on the sediments preserved within the fossil corridors and inferences that can be derived from data in the adjacent basins. We also consider the possible impact of evolving exchange on both the Mediterranean and global climate and highlight the main enduring challenges for reconstructing past Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange.

12. Diagenetic barium cycling in Black Sea sediments – A case study for anoxic marine environments

Abstract

High-resolution sedimentary records of major and minor elements (Al, Ba, Ca, Sr, Ti), total organic carbon (TOC), and profiles of pore water constituents (View the MathML sourceSO42-, CH4, Ca2+, Ba2+, Mg2+, alkalinity) were obtained for two gravity cores (core 755, 501 m water depth and core 214, 1686 m water depth) from the northwestern Black Sea. The records were examined in order to gain insight into the cycling of Ba in anoxic marine sediments characterized by a shallow sulfate–methane transition (SMT) as well as the applicability of barite as a primary productivity proxy in such a setting. The Ba records are strongly overprinted by diagenetic barite (BaSO4) precipitation and remobilization; authigenic Ba enrichments were found at both sites at and slightly above the current SMT. Transport reaction modeling was applied to simulate the migration of the SMT during the changing geochemical conditions after the Holocene seawater intrusion into the Black Sea. Based on this, sediment intervals affected by diagenetic Ba redistribution were identified. Results reveal that the intense overprint of Ba and Baxs (Ba excess above detrital average) strongly limits its correlation to primary productivity. These findings have implications for other modern and ancient anoxic basins, such as sections covering the Oceanic Anoxic Events which Ba is frequently used as a primary productivity indicator. Our study also demonstrates the limitations concerning the use of Baxs as a tracer for downward migrations of the SMT: due to high sedimentation rates at the investigated sites, diagenetic barite fronts are buried below the SMT within a relatively short period. Thus, ‘relict’ barite fronts would only be preserved for a few thousands of years, if at all.

Abstract

Objective: The gain of mineralized bone was compared between deproteinized bovine bone allograft (DBA) and biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) for dental implant placement., Study Design: Five patients with atrophic maxillae underwent bilateral sinus elevation with DBA (Bio-Oss) and BCP (Straumann BoneCeramic). After 3 to 8 months, 32 Camlog implants were placed, and biopsies were retrieved. Bone and graft volume, degree of bone mineralization, and graft degradation gradient were determined using micro-computed tomography, and bone formation and resorption parameters were measured using histomorphometry. Implant functioning and peri-implant mucosa were evaluated up to 4 years., Results: Patients were prosthetically successfully restored. All but one of the implants survived, and peri-implant mucosa showed healthy appearance and stability. Bone volume, graft volume, degree of bone mineralization, and osteoclast and osteocyte numbers were similar, but BCP-grafted biopsies had relatively more osteoid than DBA-grafted biopsies., Conclusions: The BCP and DBA materials showed similar osteoconductive patterns and mineralized bone, although signs of more active bone formation and remodeling were observed in BCP- than in DBA-grafted biopsies., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Abstract

Objective: To assess the predictors of implant failure after grafted maxillary sinus (GMS)., Material and Methods: A total of 1045 implants were inserted in 224 patients/347 GMS during a period of 14 years. Kaplan-Meyer and multivariate log-regression analysis were used to assess the following variates: patient's age, gender, smoker/nonsmoker, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class, one/two-stage surgery, merged/submerged healing, membrane, antibiotics, auto/allo/xenogenic bone grafts, implant's lengths/surface/diameter, crestal bone atrophy/quality, implant region, prosthetics, opposing dentition, and implant proximity to evaluate the predictors and relative risk (hazard ratio [HR]) of implant failure., Results: Significant implant failure predictors were the graft material (HR = 4.7), with superior results for autogenic bone, residual crestal bone height (HR = 3.51), ASA class (HR = 2.73), surgical technique (HR = 2.56), implant proximity (HR = 2.07), smoker (HR = 1.98), and age (>60/HR=1.39). All other factors were insignificant. Overall survival rate was 93.3%., Conclusions: GMS is effective when the predictors are considered. Patient selection, including the ASA status, smoking, residual bone height, and the graft material are the predominant predictors. In highly atrophic situations, autogenic bone grafts showed superiority; however, in less atrophic cases, nonautogenic bone-grafts are equivalent., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
