This study explores the influence of thermal radiation and heat source on magnetized flow micropolar nanofluid through a Stretchable Sheet in the presence of mobile microbes. The presence of microorganisms adds a biological dimension to the problem, affecting fluid dynamics and heat transfer, which are central to this investigation. To motivate the problem, the flow is induced by a Darcy porous exponentially stretching sheet with generalized boundary conditions. A regression analysis is conducted to analyze the interplay of various parameters on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. Additionally, similarity transformations are implemented to transform the set of partial differential equations (PDEs) into a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The resulting equations are solved numerically using the shooting approach via the bvp4c platform in Matlab. The regression model quantifies the impact of each parameter and their interactions on the flow field, temperature distribution, and Darcy effects. Furthermore, the impact of involved parameters on flow, energy, volumetric concentration, density of microbes, and micro-rotations distribution are analyzed and discussed through graphs, literature, and tables. The findings of this research are crucial for various engineering, industrial, and pharmaceutical applications, including biofilm formation, geothermal energy extraction, and wastewater treatment processes.

Elastic turbulence is an efficient heat transfer method at microscale. In this work, we conduct a systematic investigation on the flow and heat transfer performances of viscoelastic polymer solutions in microchannels with chip arrays by means of high-fidelity numerical simulations. Focusing on the effects of fluid elasticity [i.e. polymer relaxation time (λ)] and flow Reynolds number (Re), we find that the synergistic interplay between inertial and elastic forces is strategically exploited to amplify convection, thereby facilitating an enhanced heat transfer performance. For highly elastic fluid, the Nusselt number (Nu) can be improved by 76.13 % compared to that of less elastic fluid, while the pressure drop is reduced appropriately. In addition, as the fluid elasticity increases, the pressure drop decreases and eventually converges to a constant. In the zone of elastic turbulence, the fluid reinforces the convective heat transfer, which can be ascribe to the deformation of long-chain polymer molecules. Particularly, we consider the effect of temperature-dependent λ on the heat transfer performance. Our results demonstrate that the increased temperature-dependent λ decreases the value of Nu, and the variation between values of variable and constant λ is reduced with increasing Re or λ. Hence, in some cases of large fluid elasticity or high Re, it is possible to safely ignore the impact of temperature-dependent λ with an acceptable accuracy. The present work provides important insights into the enhanced heat transfer via elastic turbulence, which could guide the applications in the field of chip cooling.

When a soft glassy colloidal suspension is displaced by a Newtonian fluid in a radial Hele-Shaw geometry, the pattern morphology that develops at the interface is determined by the complex rheology of the former. We had reported in an earlier work [Palak, V. R. S. Parmar, D. Saha and R. Bandyopadhyay, JCIS Open, 6 (2022) 100047] that a range of pattern morphologies characterised by distinctive structural features can be formed by controlling the elasticity of the displaced suspension, the flow rate of the displacing fluid and the interfacial tension of the fluid pair. Interestingly, all the different morphological features can be distinguished in terms of their areal ratios, defined as the ratio of the areas occupied by the fully-developed pattern and the smallest circle enclosing it. In a significant advance to this earlier work, we show here that a systematic study of spatio-temporal pattern growth can reveal important information about pattern selection mechanisms. We analyse the time-evolution of the patterns to reveal interesting correlations between their growth mechanisms and fully-developed morphologies. We believe that such systematic identification of the unique temporal features characterising pattern growth at the interface between an aging viscoelastic clay suspension and a Newtonian fluid can be useful in pre-empting and suppressing the onset and evolution of interfacial instabilities in the displacement of mud and cement slurries.

Intricate fluid displacement patterns, arising from the unstable growth of interfacial perturbations, can be driven by fluid viscoelasticity and surface tension. A soft glassy suspension ages, i.e. its mechanical moduli evolve with time, due to the spontaneous formation of suspension microstructures. The shear and time-dependent rheology of an aging suspension can be exploited to generate a wide variety of interfacial patterns during its displacement by a Newtonian fluid. Using video imaging, we report a rich array of interfacial pattern morphologies: dense viscous, dendritic, viscoelastic fracture, flower-shaped, jagged and stable, during the miscible and immiscible displacements of an aging colloidal clay suspension by Newtonian fluids injected into a radial quasi-two-dimensional geometry at different flow rates. We propose a new parameter, the areal ratio, which we define as the fully developed pattern area normalized by the area of the smallest circle enclosing it. We show that the natural logarithms of the areal ratios uniquely identify the distinct pattern morphologies, such that each pattern can be segregated in a three-dimensional phase diagram spanned by the suspension aging time, the displacing fluid flow rate, and interfacial tension. Besides being of fundamental interest, our results are useful in predicting and controlling the growth of interfaces during fluid displacements.

In this work, we reveal the flow dynamics of Vitreous Humour (VH) gel and liquid phases during saccadic movements of the eye, considering the biofluids viscoelastic character as well as realistic eye chamber geometry and taking into account the saccade profile. We quantify the differences in the flow dynamics of VH gel and liquid phases using viscoelastic rheological models that are able to model the VH shear rheology, considering different amplitudes of saccadic movements (10 ∘ , 20 ∘ , 30 ∘ and 40 ∘ ). For this purpose, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) open source software OpenFOAM® was used. The results portray a distinct flow behaviour for the VH gel and liquid phases, with inertial effects being more significant for the VH liquid phase. Moreover, the Wall Shear Stress (WSS) values produced by the VH gel phase are more than twice of those generated by the VH liquid phase. Results also show that for different amplitudes of eye movement both the velocity magnitude in the vitreous cavity and the shear stresses on the cavity walls rise with increasing saccadic movement displacement., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. The viscoelasticity effects on the reaction-diffusion rates in a Y-shaped microreactor are studied utilizing the PTT rheological model. The flow is assumed to be fully developed and considered to be created under a combined action of electroosmotic and pressure forces. In general, finite-volume-based numerical simulations are conducted to handle the problem; however, analytical solutions based on the depthwise averaging approach are also obtained for the case for which there is no reaction between the inlet components. The analytical solutions are found to predict accurate results when the width to height ratio is at least 10 and acceptable results for lower aspect ratios. An investigation of the viscoelasticity effect reveals that it is accompanied by a significant reduction of the production rate and the production efficiency, defined as the ratio of the average product concentration to the inlet concentration of the limiting reactant. In addition, this effect gives rise to a more uniform transport with more symmetric concentration distributions. The pressure effects on the reaction-diffusion rates are also pronounced in the presence of viscoelasticity. Finally, the influences of the product diffusivity are investigated for the first time revealing that the lower it is the thinner the area of significant production becomes., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. From the recent advent of the new soft-micro technologies, the hydrodynamic theory of surface modes propagating on viscoelastic bodies has reinvigorated this field of technology with interesting predictions and new possible applications, so recovering its scientific interest very limited at birth to the academic scope. Today, a myriad of soft small objects, deformable meso- and micro-structures, and macroscopically viscoelastic bodies fabricated from colloids and polymers are already available in the materials catalogue. Thus, one can envisage a constellation of new soft objects fabricated by-design with a functional dynamics based on the mechanical interplay of the viscoelastic material with the medium through their interfaces. In this review, we recapitulate the field from its birth and theoretical foundation in the latest 1980s up today, through its flourishing in the 90s from the prediction of extraordinary Rayleigh modes in coexistence with ordinary capillary waves on the surface of viscoelastic fluids, a fact first confirmed in experiments by Dominique Langevin and me with soft gels [Monroy and Langevin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 3167 (1998)]. With this observational discovery at sight, we not only settled the theory previously formulated a few years before, but mainly opened a new field of applications with soft materials where the mechanical interplay between surface and bulk motions matters. Also, new unpublished results from surface wave experiments performed with soft colloids are reported in this contribution, in which the analytic methods of wave surfing synthetized together with the concept of coexisting capillary-shear modes are claimed as an integrated tool to insightfully scrutinize the bulk rheology of soft solids and viscoelastic fluids. This dedicatory to the figure of Dominique Langevin includes an appraisal of the relevant theoretical aspects of the surface hydrodynamics of viscoelastic fluids, and the coverage of the most important experimental results obtained during the three decades of research on this field., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
