Abstract: The linear complementarity problem is to find a vector in satisfying , ,, where and are given. In this paper, we use the fact that solving is equivalent to solving the nonlinear equation where is a function from into itself defined by . We build a sequence of smooth functions which is uniformly convergent to the function . We show that, an approximation of the solution of the (when it exists) is obtained by solving for a parameter large enough. Then we give a globally convergent hybrid algorithm which is based on vector divisions and the secant method for solving . We close our paper with some numerical simulations to illustrate our theoretical results, and to show that this method can solve efficiently large-scale linear complementarity problems. Abstract: This paper proposes a sequential approach to determine the unknown parameters for inverse heat conduction problems which have multiple time-dependent heat sources. There are two main aims in this study, one is to derive an inverse algorithm that can estimate the unknown conditions effectively, and the other is to bring up a theoretical sensitivity analysis to discuss what causes the growth of errors. This paper has three major achievements with regard to the literature on IHCPs, as follows: (1) proposing an efficient sequential inverse algorithm that can simultaneously determine several unknown time-dependent parameters; (2) exploring why the sequential function specification method can provide a stable but inaccurate estimation when tackling problems with larger measurement errors; and (3) discussing the sensitivity problem and analyzing what factors cause the growth in error sensitivity. Three examples are applied to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, and the numerical results show that the accurate estimations can be obtained by alleviating the error sensitivity when the measurement error is considered. Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the optimal locations of surveillance cameras on straight lanes. As known, inappropriate settings of surveillance cameras will result in some dead angles and dead space, and oversetting of surveillance cameras will waste limited resources. The considered location problem aims to minimize the maximal detection failure probability of points on straight lane subject to a limited budget. The problem is an important and complex location problem in practice. The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, exact closed forms of optimal locations of single-type surveillance cameras are derived. Secondly, we apply a PSO algorithm for solving the types and locations of multiple-type surveillance cameras. Numerical results are reported and compared with those by well known software LINGO. Abstract: In this paper, a new fault prediction model is presented to deal with the fault prediction problems in the presence of both quantitative and qualitative data based on the dynamic evidential reasoning (DER) approach. In engineering practice, system performance is constantly changed with time. As such, there is a need to develop a supporting mechanism that can be used to conduct dynamic fusion with time, and establish a prediction model to trace and predict system performance. In this paper, a DER approach is first developed to realize dynamic fusion. The new approach takes account of time effect by introducing belief decaying factor, which reflects the nature that evidence credibility is decreasing over time. Theoretically, it is show that the new DER aggregation schemes also satisfy the synthesis theorems. Then a fault prediction model based on the DER approach is established and several optimization models are developed for locally training the DER prediction model. The main feature of these optimization models is that only partial input and output information is required, which can be either incomplete or vague, either numerical or judgmental, or mixed. The models can be used to fine tune the DER prediction model whose initial parameters are decided by expert’s knowledge or common sense. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the detailed implementation procedures of the proposed approach and demonstrate its potential applications in fault prediction. In many phase-change problems of practical interest, it is important to know when a phase is depleted, a quantity referred to as the extinction time; however, there are no numerical schemes that are able to compute this with any degree of rigour or formal accuracy. In this paper, we develop such a scheme for the one-dimensional time-dependent problem of an evaporating spherical droplet. The Keller box finite-difference scheme is used, in tandem with the so-called boundary immobilization method. An important component of the work is the careful use of variable transformations that must be built into the numerical algorithm in order to preserve second-order accuracy in both time and space, in particular as regards resolving a square-root singularity in the droplet radius as the extinction time is approached. Abstract: The split feasibility problem models inverse problems arising from phase retrieval problems and the intensity modulated radiation therapy. In this paper, two methods have been presented for solving the split feasibility problem. The strong convergence results of presented algorithms have been obtained under some mild conditions. Abstract: Model updating should be correlated with experimental data to ensure that it models the dynamics of the real structure and the updated model predicts the dynamics of a structure more accurately. Considering that the iterative methods for model updating have aroused little public attention, this paper studies an iterative algorithm for quadratic model updating problems which can incorporate the measured modal data into the finite element model to produce an adjusted finite element model on the mass, gyroscopic and stiffness matrices that closely match the experimental modal data. By this method, the best approximation symmetric and skew-symmetric solutions can be obtained by choosing a convergence factor. Abstract: Quadratic knapsack problem has a central role in integer and nonlinear optimization, which has been intensively studied due to its immediate applications in many fields and theoretical reasons. Although quadratic knapsack problem can be solved using traditional nonlinear optimization methods, specialized algorithms are much faster and more reliable than the nonlinear programming solvers. In this paper, we study a mixed linear and quadratic knapsack with a convex separable objective function subject to a single linear constraint and box constraints. We investigate the structural properties of the studied problem, and develop a simple method for solving the continuous version of the problem based on bi-section search, and then we present heuristics for solving the integer version of the problem. Numerical experiments are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed solution methods by comparing our methods with some state of the art linear and quadratic convex solvers. Abstract: In this paper, a new numerical approach via reconstructed Legendre orthogonal polynomials (LOPs) is presented to solve the linear quadratic optimal control problems (LQPs). By using the elegant operational properties of orthogonal polynomials, a computationally attractive algorithm is developed for calculating LQP. Abstract: A DoS attack can be regarded as an attempt of attackers to prevent legal users from gaining a normal network service. The TCP connection management protocol sets a position for a classic DoS attack, namely, the SYN flood attack. In this attack some sources send a large number of TCP SYN segments, without completing the third handshake step to quickly exhaust connection resources of the under attack system. This paper models the under attack server by using the queuing theory in which attack requests are recognized based on their long service time. Then it proposes a framework in which the defense issue is formulated as an optimization problem and employs the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to optimally solve this problem. PSO tries to direct the server to an optimum defense point by dynamically setting two TCP parameters, namely, maximum number of connections and maximum duration of a half-open connection. The simulation results show that the proposed defense strategy improves the performance of the under attack system in terms of rejection probability of connection requests and efficient consumption of buffer space. Abstract: The performance of an optimization tool is largely determined by the efficiency of the search algorithm used in the process. The fundamental nature of a search algorithm will essentially determine its search efficiency and thus the types of problems it can solve. Modern metaheuristic algorithms are generally more suitable for global optimization. This paper carries out extensive global optimization of unconstrained and constrained problems using the recently developed eagle strategy by Yang and Deb in combination with the efficient differential evolution. After a detailed formulation and explanation of its implementation, the proposed algorithm is first verified using twenty unconstrained optimization problems or benchmarks. For the validation against constrained problems, this algorithm is subsequently applied to thirteen classical benchmarks and three benchmark engineering problems reported in the engineering literature. The performance of the proposed algorithm is further compared with various, state-of-the-art algorithms in the area. The optimal solutions obtained in this study are better than the best solutions obtained by the existing methods. The unique search features used in the proposed algorithm are analyzed, and their implications for future research are also discussed in detail. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, we propose the MIML (Multi-Instance Multi-Label learning) framework where an example is described by multiple instances and associated with multiple class labels. Compared to traditional learning frameworks, the MIML framework is more convenient and natural for representing complicated objects which have multiple semantic meanings. To learn from MIML examples, we propose the MimlBoost and MimlSvm algorithms based on a simple degeneration strategy, and experiments show that solving problems involving complicated objects with multiple semantic meanings in the MIML framework can lead to good performance. Considering that the degeneration process may lose information, we propose the D-MimlSvm algorithm which tackles MIML problems directly in a regularization framework. Moreover, we show that even when we do not have access to the real objects and thus cannot capture more information from real objects by using the MIML representation, MIML is still useful. We propose the InsDif and SubCod algorithms. InsDif works by transforming single-instances into the MIML representation for learning, while SubCod works by transforming single-label examples into the MIML representation for learning. Experiments show that in some tasks they are able to achieve better performance than learning the single-instances or single-label examples directly. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, we present a generic mixed-integer linear multistage stochastic programming (MSSP) model considering endogenous uncertainty in some of the parameters. To address the issue that the number of non-anticipativity (NA) constraints increases exponentially with the number of uncertain parameters and/or its realizations, we present a new theoretical property that significantly reduces the problem size and complements two previous properties. Since one might generate reduced models that are still too large to be solved directly, we also propose three solution strategies: a k-stage constraint strategy where we only include the NA constraints up to a specified number of stages, an iterative NAC relaxation strategy, and a Lagrangean decomposition algorithm that decomposes the problem into scenarios. Numerical results for two process network examples are presented to illustrate that the proposed solution strategies yield significant computational savings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze a FEM and two-grid FEM decoupling algorithms for elliptic problems on disjoint domains. First, we study the rate of convergence of the FEM and, in particular, we obtain a superconvergence result. Then with proposed algorithms, the solution of the multi-component domain problem (simple example — two disjoint rectangles) on a fine grid is reduced to the solution of the original problem on a much coarser grid together with solution of several problems (each on a single-component domain) on fine meshes. The advantage is the computational cost although the resulting solution still achieves asymptotically optimal accuracy. Numerical experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithms. Abstract: We study an on-line machine covering problem, in which jobs arrive one by one and their processing times are known upon their arrival, and jobs are allowed to migrate between machines when a new job is added in the system. However, the total processing time of migration induced by an incoming job is bounded by a constant factor times the processing time of the incoming job. The objective is to maximize the minimum machine load. In this paper, we present an on-line algorithm with competitive ratio 6/5 for the two identical machines case with . Moreover, the presented on-line algorithm is only a local migration, that is, when one job is assigned to machine , only the jobs on machine are allowed to migrate. We also show that the provided algorithm is a best possible on-line algorithm in the sense of local migration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper deals with an inverse problem of determining a source term in the one-dimensional fractional advection–dispersion equation (FADE) with a Dirichlet boundary condition on a finite domain, using final observations. On the basis of the shifted Grünwald formula, a finite difference scheme for the forward problem of the FADE is given, by means of which the source magnitude depending upon the space variable is reconstructed numerically by applying an optimal perturbation regularization algorithm. Numerical inversions with noisy data are carried out for the unknowns taking three functional forms: polynomials, trigonometric functions and index functions. The reconstruction results show that the inversion algorithm is efficient for the inverse problem of determining source terms in a FADE, and the algorithm is also stable for additional data having random noises. Abstract: In this paper, we propose an interval version of the generalized accelerated overrelaxation methods, which we refer to as IGAOR, for solving the linear complementarity problems, LCP (M, q), and develop a class of multisplitting IGAOR methods which can be easily implemented in parallel. In addition, in regards to the H-matrix with positive diagonal elements, we prove the convergence of these algorithms and illustrate their efficiency through our numerical results. Abstract: This paper deals with a recently proposed algorithm for obtaining all weak efficient and efficient solutions in a multi objective linear programming (MOLP) problem. The algorithm is based on solving some weighted sum problems, and presents an easy and clear solution structure. We first present an example to show that the algorithm may fail when at least one of these weighted sum problems has not a finite optimal solution. Then, the algorithm is modified to overcome this problem. The modified algorithm determines whether an efficient solution exists for a given MOLP and generates the solution set correctly (if exists) without any change in the complexity.
