A 1 -plane graph is a graph embedded in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once. A NIC-plane graph is a 1-plane graph such that any two pairs of crossing edges share at most one end-vertex. An edge partition of a 1-plane graph G is a coloring of the edges of G with two colors, red and blue, such that both the graph induced by the red edges and the graph induced by the blue edges are plane graphs. We prove the following: ( i ) Every NIC-plane graph admits an edge partition such that the red graph has maximum vertex degree three; this bound on the vertex degree is worst-case optimal. ( ii ) Deciding whether a NIC-plane graph admits an edge partition such that the red graph has maximum vertex degree two is NP-complete. ( iii ) Deciding whether a 1-plane graph admits an edge partition such that the red graph has maximum vertex degree one, and computing one in the positive case, can be done in quadratic time. We give new results about the relationship between 1-planar graphs and RAC graphs . A graph is 1-planar if it has a drawing where each edge is crossed at most once. A graph is RAC if it can be drawn in such a way that its edges cross only at right angles. These two classes of graphs and their relationships have been widely investigated in the last years, due to their relevance in application domains where computing readable graph layouts is important to analyze or design relational data sets. We study IC-planar graphs , the sub-family of 1-planar graphs that admit 1-planar drawings with independent crossings (i.e., no two crossed edges share an endpoint). We prove that every IC-planar graph admits a straight-line RAC drawing, which may require however exponential area. If we do not require right angle crossings, we can draw every IC-planar graph with straight-line edges in linear time and quadratic area. We then study the problem of testing whether a graph is IC-planar. We prove that this problem is NP-hard, even if a rotation system for the graph is fixed. On the positive side, we describe a polynomial-time algorithm that tests whether a triangulated plane graph augmented with a given set of edges that form a matching is IC-planar. Abstract: Mixed graphs have both directed and undirected edges and have received considerable attention in the literature. We study two upward planarity testing problems for embedded mixed graphs, give some NP-hardness results, and describe Integer Linear Programming techniques to solve them. Abstract: Let G be an embedded planar digraph. A maximum upward planar subgraph of G is an embedding preserving subgraph that is upward planar and, among those, has the maximum number of edges. This paper presents an extensive study on the problem of computing maximum upward planar subgraphs of embedded planar digraphs: Complexity results, algorithms, and experiments are presented. Namely: (i) we prove that the addressed problem is NP-Hard; (ii) a fast heuristic and an exponential-time exact algorithm are described; (iii) a wide experimental analysis is performed to show the effectiveness of our techniques. Abstract: This paper studies how to compute radially layered drawings of graphs by taking into account additional geometric constraints which correspond to typical aesthetic and semantic requirements for the visualization. The following requirements are considered: vertex centrality, edge crossings, curve complexity, and radial distribution of the vertices. Abstract: In this paper, we study k-spine, h-bend planar drawings in which each vertex of a planar graph G lies on one of horizontal lines and each edge of G is drawn as a polyline containing at most bends. A graph with a k-spine, h-bend planar drawing is said to be k-spine, h-bend planar. We mainly focus on k-spine, 1-bend planar drawings, showing that for each , there exists a planar graph that is not k-spine, 1-bend planar, and furthermore, that it is -hard to test k-spine, 1-bend planarity. Given this complexity result, we further narrow our focus onto 2-spine, 1-bend planar drawings. We characterize 2-spine, 1-bend planarity using a new generalization of Hamiltonian graphs that we call Hamiltonian-with-handles graphs. We observe that our characterization naturally extends the connection between 2-page book embeddings and Hamiltonicity. Finally, we use our characterization to show that 2-outerplanar graphs are 2-spine, 1-bend planar. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper studies the problem of computing orthogonal drawings of graphs with labels on vertices and edges. Our research is mainly motivated by Software Engineering and Information Systems domains, where tools like UML diagrams and ER-diagrams are considered fundamental for the design of sophisticated systems and/or complex data bases collecting enormous amount of information. A label is modeled as a rectangle of prescribed width and height and it can be associated with either a vertex or an edge. Our drawing algorithms guarantee no overlaps between labels, vertices, and edges and take advantage of the information about the set of labels to compute the geometry of the drawing. Several additional optimization goals are taken into account. Namely, the labeled drawing can be required to have either minimum total edge length, or minimum width, or minimum height, or minimum area among those preserving a given orthogonal representation. All these goals lead to NP-hard problems. We present MILP models to compute optimal drawings with respect to the first three goals and an exact algorithm that is based on these models to compute a labeled drawing of minimum area. We also present several heuristics for computing compact labeled orthogonal drawings and experimentally validate their performances, comparing their solutions against the optimum. Let C be the family of 2D curves described by concave functions, let G be a planar graph, and let L be a linear ordering of the vertices of G. L is a curve embedding of G if for any given curve Λ∈C there exists a planar drawing of G such that: (i) the vertices are constrained to be on Λ with the same ordering as in L, and (ii) the edges are polylines with at most one bend. Informally speaking, a curve embedding can be regarded as a two-page book embedding in which the spine is bent. Although deciding whether a graph has a two-page book embedding is an NP-hard problem, in this paper it is proven that every planar graph has a curve embedding which can be computed in linear time. A fixed-mobile bigraph G is a bipartite graph such that the vertices of one partition set are given with fixed positions in the plane and the mobile vertices of the other partition, together with the edges, must be added to the drawing without any restriction on their positions. We assume that G is planar and study the problem of finding a planar straight-line drawing of G. We show that deciding whether G admits such a drawing is NP -hard in the general case. Under the assumption that each mobile vertex is placed in the convex hull of its neighbors, we are able to prove that the problem is also in NP. Moreover, if the intersection graph of these convex hulls is a path, a cycle or, more generally, a cactus, the problem is polynomial-time solvable through a dynamic programming approach. Finally, we describe linear-time testing algorithms when the fixed vertices are collinear or when they lie on a finite set of horizontal levels (lines) and no edge can intersect a level except at its fixed vertex. A drawing of a graph is greedy if for each ordered pair of vertices u and v , there is a path from u to v such that the Euclidean distance to v decreases monotonically at every vertex of the path. From an application perspective, greedy drawings are especially relevant to support routing schemes in ad hoc wireless networks. The existence of greedy drawings has been widely studied under different topological and geometric constraints, such as planarity, face convexity, and drawing succinctness. We introduce greedy rectilinear drawings , where edges are horizontal or vertical segments. These drawings have several properties that improve human readability and support network routing. We address the problem of testing whether a planar rectilinear representation , i.e., a plane graph with prescribed vertex angles, admits a greedy rectilinear drawing. We give a characterization, a linear-time testing algorithm, and a full generative scheme for universal greedy rectilinear representations, i.e., those for which every drawing is greedy. For general greedy rectilinear representations, we give a combinatorial characterization and, based on it, a polynomial-time testing and drawing algorithm for a meaningful subset of instances. In a fan-planar drawing of a graph an edge can cross only edges with a common end-vertex. Fan-planar drawings have been recently introduced by Kaufmann and Ueckerdt [35] , who proved that every n -vertex fan-planar drawing has at most 5 n − 10 edges, and that this bound is tight for n ≥ 20 . We extend their result from both the combinatorial and the algorithmic point of view. We prove tight bounds on the density of constrained versions of fan-planar drawings and study the relationship between fan-planarity and k -planarity. Abstract: In this paper we study the problem of computing an upward straight-line embedding of a planar DAG (directed acyclic graph) G into a point set S, i.e. a planar drawing of G such that each vertex is mapped to a point of S, each edge is drawn as a straight-line segment, and all the edges are oriented according to a common direction. In particular, we show that no biconnected DAG admits an upward straight-line embedding into every point set in convex position. We provide a characterization of the family of DAGs that admit an upward straight-line embedding into every convex point set such that the points with the largest and the smallest y-coordinate are consecutive in the convex hull of the point set. We characterize the family of DAGs that contain a Hamiltonian directed path and that admit an upward straight-line embedding into every point set in general position. We also prove that a DAG whose underlying graph is a tree does not always have an upward straight-line embedding into a point set in convex position and we describe how to construct such an embedding for a DAG whose underlying graph is a path. Finally, we give results about the embeddability of some sub-classes of DAGs whose underlying graphs are trees on point set in convex and in general position. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We initiate the study of the following problem: Given a non-planar graph G and a planar subgraph S of G, does there exist a straight-line drawing Γ of G in the plane such that the edges of S are not crossed in Γ by any edge of G? We give positive and negative results for different kinds of connected spanning subgraphs S of G . Moreover, in order to enlarge the subset of instances that admit a solution, we consider the possibility of bending the edges of G not in S ; in this setting we discuss different trade-offs between the number of bends and the required drawing area.
