Celestial bodies like the Moon and asteroids contain materials and precious metals, which are valuable for human activity on Earth and beyond. Space mining has been mainly relegated to the realm of science fiction, and was not treated seriously by the international community. The private industry is starting to assemble towards space mining, and success on this front would have major impact on all nations. We present in this paper a review of current space mining ventures, and the international legislation, which could stand in their way - or aid them in their mission. Following that, we present the results of a role-playing simulation in which the role of several important nations was played by students of international relations. The results of the simulation are used as a basis for forecasting the potential initial responses of the nations of the world to a successful space mining operation in the future. Abstract: The analysis of optical navigation in an Earth–Moon libration point orbit is examined. Missions to libration points have been winning momentum during the last decades. Its unique characteristics make it suitable for a number of operational and scientific goals. Literature aimed to study dynamics, guidance and control of unstable orbits around collinear libration points is vast. In particular, several papers deal with the optimisation of the Δv budget associated to the station-keeping of these orbits. One of the results obtained in literature establishes the critical character of the Moon–Earth system in this aspect. The reason for this behaviour is twofold: high Δv cost and short optimal manoeuvre spacing. Optical autonomous navigation can address the issue of allowing a more flexible manoeuvre design. This technology has been selected to overcome similar difficulties in other critical scenarios. This paper analyses in detail this solution. A whole GNC system is defined to meet the requirements imposed by the unstable dynamic environment. Finally, a real simulation of a spacecraft following a halo orbit of the L2 Moon–Earth system is carried out to assess the actual capabilities of the optical navigation in this scenario. Abstract: The paper deals with the dynamic modeling of wheeled planetary rovers operating on rough terrain. The dedicated model here presented, although kept as simple as possible, includes the effect of nonlinearities and models the suspensions in a realistic, albeit simplified, way. It can be interfaced with a model of the control system so that different control strategies can be studied in detail and, in case of teleoperated rovers, it can be used as a simulator for training the operators. Different implementations, with different degrees of complexity, are presented and compared with each other so that the user can simulate the dynamics of the rover making a tradeoff between simulation accuracy and computer time. The model allows to study the effects of the terrain characteristics, of the ground irregularities and the operating speed on the behavior of the rover. In situ resource utilization (ISRU) may one day enable long duration lunar missions. But the efficacy of such an approach greatly depends on (1) physical and chemical makeup of the resource, and (2) the logistical cost of exploiting the resource. Establishing these key strategic factors requires prospecting: the capability of locating and characterizing potential resources. There is already considerable evidence from orbital and impact missions that the lunar poles harbor plausibly rich reservoirs of volatiles. The next step is to land on the Moon and assess the nature, “ore-grade”, and extractability of water ice and other materials. In support of this next step, a mission simulation was carried out on the island of Hawai’i in July of 2012. A robotic rover, provided by the Canadian Space Agency, carried several NASA ISRU-supporting instruments in a field test to address how such a mission might be carried out. This exercise was meant to test the ability to (a) locate and characterize volatiles, (b) acquire subsurface samples in a volatile-rich location, and (c) analyze the form and composition of the volatiles to determine their utility. This paper describes the successful demonstration of neutron spectroscopy as a prospecting and decision support system to locate and evaluate potential ISRU targets in the field exercise. Abstract: NASA has created a plan to implement the Flexible Path strategy, which utilizes a heavy lift launch vehicle to deliver crew and cargo to orbit. In this plan, NASA would develop much of the transportation architecture (launch vehicle, crew capsule, and in-space propulsion), leaving the other in-space elements open to commercial and international partnerships. This paper presents a space exploration strategy that reverses that philosophy, where commercial and international launch vehicles provide launch services. Utilizing a propellant depot to aggregate propellant on orbit, smaller launch vehicles are capable of delivering all of the mass necessary for space exploration. This strategy has benefits to the architecture in terms of cost, schedule, and reliability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The NASA Desert Research and Technology Studies (Desert RATS) is an annual field test of advanced concepts, prototype hardware, and potential modes of operation to be used on human planetary surface space exploration missions. For the 2009 and 2010 NASA Desert RATS field tests, various engineering concepts and operational exercises were incorporated into mission timelines with the focus of the majority of daily operations being on simulated lunar geological field operations and executed in a manner similar to current Space Shuttle and International Space Station missions. The field test for 2009 involved a two week lunar exploration simulation utilizing a two-man rover. The 2010 Desert RATS field test took this two week simulation further by incorporating a second two-man rover working in tandem with the 2009 rover, as well as including docked operations with a Pressurized Excursion Module (PEM). Personnel for the field test included the crew, a mission management team, engineering teams, a science team, and the mission operations team. The mission operations team served as the core of the Desert RATS mission control team and included certified NASA Mission Operations Directorate (MOD) flight controllers, former flight controllers, and astronaut personnel. The backgrounds of the flight controllers were in the areas of Extravehicular Activity (EVA), onboard mechanical systems and maintenance, robotics, timeline planning (OpsPlan), and spacecraft communicator (Capcom). With the simulated EVA operations, mechanized operations (the rover), and expectations of replanning, these flight control disciplines were especially well suited for the execution of the 2009 and 2010 Desert RATS field tests. The inclusion of an operations team has provided the added benefit of giving NASA mission operations flight control personnel the opportunity to begin examining operational mission control techniques, team compositions, and mission scenarios. This also gave the mission operations team the opportunity to gain insight into functional hardware requirements via lessons learned from executing the Desert RATS field test missions. This paper will detail the mission control team structure that was used during the 2009 and 2010 Desert RATS Lunar analog missions. It will also present a number of the lessons learned by the operations team during these field tests. Major lessons learned involved Mission Control Center (MCC) operations, pre-mission planning and training processes, procedure requirements, communication requirements, and logistic support for analogs. This knowledge will be applied to future Desert RATS field tests, and other Earth based analog testing for space exploration, to continue the evolution of manned space operations in preparation for human planetary exploration. It is important that operational knowledge for human space exploration missions be obtained during Earth-bound field tests to the greatest extent possible. Abstract: Human space exploration is continuously advancing despite the current financial difficulties, and the new missions are targeting the Moon and the Mars with more effective human–robot collaborative systems. The continuous development of robotic technology should lead to the advancement of automated technology, including space medicine. Telesurgery has already proved its effectiveness through various telemedicine procedures on Earth, and it has the potential to provide medical assistance in space as well. Aeronautical agencies have already conducted numerous experiments and developed various setups to push the boundaries of teleoperation under extreme conditions. Different control schemes have been proposed and tested to facilitate and enhance telepresence and to ensure transparency, sufficient bandwidth and latency-tolerance. This paper focuses on the modeling of a generic telesurgery setup, supported by a cascade control approach. The minimalistic models were tested with linear and PID-fuzzy control options to provide a simple, universal and scalable solution for the challenges of telesurgery over large distances. In our simulations, the control structures were capable of providing good dynamic performance indices and robustness with respect to the gain in the human operator model. Abstract: In the early 2000s, NASA made substantial progress in the development of solar sail propulsion systems for use in robotic science and exploration of the solar system. Two different 20-m solar sail systems were produced. NASA has successfully completed functional vacuum testing in their Glenn Research Center’s Space Power Facility at Plum Brook Station, Ohio. The sails were designed and developed by Alliant Techsystems Space Systems and L’Garde, respectively. The sail systems consist of a central structure with four deployable booms that support each sail. These sail designs are robust enough for deployment in a one-atmosphere, one-gravity environment and are scalable to much larger solar sails – perhaps as large as 150m on a side. Computation modeling and analytical simulations were performed in order to assess the scalability of the technology to the larger sizes that are required to implement the first generation of missions using solar sails. Furthermore, life and space environmental effects testing of sail and component materials was also conducted. NASA terminated funding for solar sails and other advanced space propulsion technologies shortly after these ground demonstrations were completed. In order to capitalize on the $30M investment made in solar sail technology to that point, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center funded the NanoSail-D, a subscale solar sail system designed for possible small spacecraft applications. The NanoSail-D mission flew on board a Falcon-1 rocket, launched August 2, 2008. As a result of the failure of that rocket, the NanoSail-D was never successfully given the opportunity to achieve orbit. The NanoSail-D flight spare was flown in the Fall of 2010. Abstract: The Advanced Life Support/NASA Specialized Center of Research and Training (ALS/NSCORT) focuses on research and development of technologies to support human habitation during space missions. This research was done as part of an effort to maintain crewmembers’ water supply in a closed life-support system. The water subsystem was the primary focus of this study because water is one of the most expensive and important resources for human survival. This paper focuses on the application of previously-developed methodologies for controlling a water-treatment system. The water-treatment and usage model was set up based on the Baseline Value and Assumptions Document (BVAD) published by NASA. The conditions, or “states”, of the system are captured hourly in the model. Control policies are defined in terms of treatment efficiencies. One control policy is to be used for the system at the beginning of each hour. A simulation is developed to study the impact of different control policies to this model. The Markov Decision Process (MDP) is used to aid the decision of choosing a policy to be used. In order for the MDP to pick the best policy, a state-space exploration technique, the Controlled Random Walk, is used for state-space exploration. This technique, together with re-initialization of initial system conditions, allow the system to visit a larger portion of the state space compared to some other techniques. In order to describe the state transitions, transition-probability matrices need to be computed. A probability-convergence technique is developed to minimize bias while computing these matrices. This technique is based on the Kullback–Leibler divergence measure, but modified for this application. A test case is constructed to assess the performance of best policies. Three scenarios with different levels of fluctuation, or disturbances, of water-consumption and treatment efficiencies are introduced in the test case. Results show that the best policies outperformed cases where fixed policies, as well as random policies, are used in all three scenarios. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The development of efficient and safe Life Support Systems is one of the key drivers of the Global Solar System Exploration efforts. For each task performed by Life Support Systems (LSS) a great multitude of sub-system concepts exist and the challenge is to find the optimal combination of sub-systems for a given mission scenario. On a sub-system level the Equivalent Systems Mass (ESM) trade study approach is well suited to effectively compare sub-system options. On a system level in addition to ESM data time dependent sub-system performances within an overall system must be addressed. Criteria such as system stability, controllability and effectiveness must be considered in order to be able to assess the dynamic robustness of systems designed to the averages. In an effort to establish a dynamic simulation environment for this type of LSS optimizations the “Virtual Habitat” tool (V-HAB) is being developed at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Abstract: In this paper, we propose a new suspension for lunar rover called obverse and reverse four-linkage suspension (ORF-L suspension for short). Its two components are designed based on the evolutions of bogie and rocker. Firstly, we analyze the character of bogie and research the approach to improve its performance. Based on that research, an evolved mechanism of bogie is proposed, named obverse four-linkage. It has better capacity than bogie. In addition an evolved mechanism of rocker is also proposed, named reverse four-linkage. The bogie, rocker and their evolved mechanisms can compose four available suspensions including the interested ORF-L suspension. Because ORF-L suspension is composed of two evolved mechanisms, it has the highest performance. In order to check that, the performance comparison between ORF-L suspension and rocker-bogie suspension are carried out based on simulation. Finally, a prototype rover with ORF-L suspension is designed and manufactured. It shows excellent performance as expected. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper presents a new approach to deal with the preliminary space mission analysis design of particularly complex trajectories focused on interplanetary targets. According to an optimization approach, a multi-objective strategy is selected on a mixed continuous and discrete state variables domain in order to deal with possible multi-gravity assist manoeuvres (GAM) as further degrees of freedom of the problem, in terms of both number and planets sequence selection to minimize both the expense and the time trip timespan. A further added value to the proposed algorithm stays in that, according to planets having an atmosphere, aero-gravity assist manoeuvres (AGAM) are considered too within the overall mission design optimization, and the consequent optimal control problem related to the aerodynamic angles history, is solved. According to the target planet, different capture strategies are managed by the algorithm, and the aerocapture manoeuvre too, whenever possible (e.g. Venus, Mars target planets). In order not to be trapped in local solution, the evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have been selected to solve this complex problem. Simulations and comparison with already designed space missions showed the ability of the proposed architecture in correctly selecting both the sequences and the planet types of either GAMs or AGAMs to optimize the selected criteria vector, in a multi-disciplinary environment, switching on the optimal control problem whenever the atmospheric interaction is involved in the optimization by the search process. Long duration super-pressure balloons constitute a great challenge in scientific ballooning. For any type of balloons (spherical, pumpkin, …), it is necessary to have a good knowledge of the mechanical behavior of envelopes regarding the level and the lifetime of the flight. For this reason CNES, ONERA and ENIT are carrying out a research program of modelization and experimentation in order to predict the envelope shape of a balloon in different conditions of temperature and differential pressure. This study was conducted in two parts. During the first one, we defined, with parameters obtained from unidirectional tests, the mechanical laws (elasticity, plasticity and viscosity properties of polymers) of materials involved in the envelope. These laws are introduced in a finite element code, which predicts the stress and strain status of a complex envelope structure. During the second one, we developed an experimental set-up to measure the 3D strain on a balloon subsystem, which includes envelope, assemblies and apex parts, in real flight conditions. This facility, called NIRVANA, is a 1 m3 vacuum chamber with cooled screens equipped with a stereoscopic CCD measurement system. A 1.5 m diameter sample can be tested under differential pressure, regulated temperature (from +20 to -120 °C) and a load (up to 6 tonnes) applied on tendons. This paper presents the first results obtained from the modelizations and measurements done on an envelope sample submitted to axisymmetrical stress due to the differential pressure. This sample consists of a 50 μm multilayer polymer film with an assembly, used in 10 m diameter STRATEOLE super-pressure balloons. The modelization gives results in good accordance with the experiments and will enable us to follow this work with cold conditions, time dependence (creeping) and more complex structures.
