In this paper, the problem of dispatching the operation of a distribution feeder comprising a set of heterogeneous resources is investigated. The main objective is to track a power trajectory, called the dispatch plan , which is computed the day before the beginning of operation. In this paper, we propose a method to optimally compute the dispatch plan so as to optimize the operation of the feeder while making sure to allocate enough local reserves to absorb deviations of the realizations. Indeed, during real-time operation, due to the stochasticity of part of the resources in the feeder portfolio, tracking errors need to be absorbed in order to track the committed dispatch plan. This is achieved by modulating the power consumption of a utility-scale battery energy storage system and of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system of a commercial controllable building. To this end, a hierarchical controller is designed to coordinate these two controllable entities while requiring a minimal communication infrastructure. Due to the inherent different response times of these systems, the power injection of the electrical battery is controlled at a sub-minute time-scale so as to absorb high-frequency tracking errors and, therefore, deliver the dispatch service. At a slower time-scale, the controllable building is controlled to maintain the state of charge for the electrical battery at a scheduled level by means of a model predictive controller. The model predictive controller is designed in order to account for both comfort and operational constraints of the controllable building, as well as power limits for the electrical storage. The effectiveness of the proposed control framework is demonstrated by means of both an extensive simulation analysis, as well as a set of 12 full day experimental results on the 20 kV distribution feeder in the campus of the Swiss institute of technology in Lausanne, that is comprised of: 1) A set of uncontrollable resources represented by five office buildings (350 kWp) and a roof-top photovoltaic installation (90 kWp), 2) a set of controllable resources, namely, a grid-connected electrical storage (720 kVA–500 kWh), and a fully-occupied multi-zone office building (45 kWp). In an effort to minimise electricity consumption and greenhouse gases emissions, the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning sector has focused its attention on developing alternative solutions to electrically-driven vapour-compression cooling. Liquid desiccant air-conditioning systems represent an energy-efficient and more environmentally friendly alternative technology for dehumidification and cooling, particularly in those cases with high latent loads to maintain indoor air quality and comfort conditions. This technology is considered particularly efficient in hot and humid climates. As a matter of fact, the choice of the desiccant solution influences the overall performance of the system. The current paper reviews the working principle of liquid desiccant systems, focusing on the thermodynamic properties of the desiccant solutions and describes an evaluation of the reference thermodynamic properties of different desiccant solutions to identify which thermodynamic, physical, transport property influences the liquid desiccant process and to what extent. The comparison of these thermodynamic properties for the commonly used desiccants is conducted to estimate which fluid could perform most favourably in the system. The economic factors and the effect of different applications and climatic conditions on the system performance are also described. The paper is intended to be the first step in the evaluation of alternative desiccant fluids able to overcome the problems related to the use of the common desiccant solutions, such as crystallization and corrosion to metals. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) are among the major energy demand in the buildings sector globally. Improving the energy efficiency of such systems is a critical objective for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning towards renewable sources of energy supply. The interest of this paper is to explore means to increase the efficiency of HVAC systems in accommodating occupants’ behavior in real time. For instance, rooms in office buildings are not always occupied by occupants during scheduled HVAC service periods. This offers an opportunity to reduce unnecessary energy demands of HVAC systems associated with occupants’ behavior. An in-depth analysis of occupants’ stochastic behavior within an office building is conducted in this paper. A demand-driven control strategy is proposed that automatically responds to occupants’ energy-related behavior for reducing energy consumption and maintains room temperature for occupants with similar performances as a static cooling. In this control strategy, two types of machine learning methods – unsupervised and supervised learning – are applied to learn occupants’ behavior in two learning processes. The occupancy-related information learned by the algorithms is used by a set of specified rules to infer real-time room setpoints for controlling the office's space cooling system. This learning-based approach intends to reduce the need for human intervention in the cooling system’s control. The proposed strategy was applied to control the cooling system of the office building under real-world conditions. Eleven case study office spaces were selected, representing three typical office uses: single person offices, multi-person offices, and meeting rooms. Along with the rapid development of global economy, energy shortage and environment pollution are getting more and more serious. The implementation of heat metering is an important measure for avoiding energy waste and reducing polluted emission. As the core of heat metering, heat meter must meet the measure heat accuracy according to the"Technical specifications for heat metering of district heating system" (Ministry of Construction). Due to the poor water quality in China, impurities are the main factor that influences the measurement precision of heat meter. The sound attenuation caused by the particles on the propagation path will reduce the measurement accuracy of the ultrasonic heat meter. In this paper, the sound attenuation of ultrasonic wave in water containing impurities which leads to the measuring error of ultrasonic heat meter is studied. This paper presents new metrics to measure the effect of thermal mass on the energy required to heat and cool buildings. Previous studies have been flawed as they have not considered the interaction between intermittent occupancy and thermal mass, which has a significant impact on overall energy use. However, existing parameters do not adequately capture these effects, so the new metrics developed in this paper are used to analyse the impact of thermal mass in hot climates with active cooling, and cold climates with active heating. The results agree with existing literature that high thermal mass structures are likely to be effective in hot climates; however, in cold climates the drawbacks of high thermal mass likely outweigh the advantages, and high thermal mass can cause an increase in energy use. This finding has implications for the design of buildings in cold climates, and contradicts the commonly-held assumption that high thermal mass is correlated with low energy use. The new metrics (transient energy ratio and effective U -value) provide a generalisable method to quantify these effects. They are further used here to analyse the dynamic performance of heavily insulated buildings and show that high thermal mass often leads to higher energy use in cold climates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Manual period maintenance and cleaning of HVAC ducts systems are time consuming and mundane task. In some cases, it lead to unexpected accidents and overhead costs. In addition, the cleaning procedures can be detrimental to HVAC cleaning specialists, especially in hazardous environments such as hospitals, medical and electronic components manufacturers. Taking into consideration that robotics aims to replace the human-operator in preforming dangerous tasks, we focus this paper on studying the feasibility to integrate telerobotic solutions in HVAC duct inspection and cleaning procedures. The paper is divided into two major sections: firstly, we study health and norms memorandums pertaining hygiene factors and metrics in certain building such as hospitals, then we analyze the possibility of using telerobotic solution in order to improve and automate the cleaning process of the air ducts, removing debris and dust. In addition, a mathematical model based on BioVac robot specifications is represented, focussing on positioning control system of the robot in the HVAC duct. • A data-driven model was developed to rapidly quantify the demand response potential of building HVAC systems. • Multiple factors affecting demand response potential were considered in the data-driven model. • A co-simulation platform based on EnergyPlus and Modelica was built for fully getting the demand response potential data. • Two commonly used DR strategies were evaluated using a series of indices. Buildings and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems are appropriate resources for demand response, but there is still a lack of rapid quantification methods to reveal buildings' dynamic demand response potential under different meteorological conditions and control strategies. In order to achieve real-time power grid dispatch and to facilitate grid-building interaction, this paper proposes a framework for establishing models to rapidly quantify the demand response potential of resources. First, a detailed co-simulation model of the building and its energy system is constructed, followed by extensive stochastic simulations of two commonly used demand response strategies, after which the demand response potential is quantified using a set of indices. Then, feature selection is performed on factors that may affect demand response potential, and a data-driven model for quantifying demand response potential is proposed, whose results are compared with those from the simulation model. Also, the demand response effects of the two control strategies are compared in this paper. A case study was carried out in an industrial building in Shenzhen, China. The results showed that under different boundaries, the coefficient of determination (R 2) of the quantification indices are all above 0.9, and that the data-driven model rapidly and accurately captured the demand response potential of the building and its heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, and was easy to deploy in practice. Resource accounting is widely practiced to identify opportunities for improving the sustainability of industrial systems. This paper presents a conceptual method for resource accounting in factories that is based on the fundamentals of thermodynamics. The approach uses exergy analysis and treats the factory as an integrated energy system comprising a building, its technical building services and manufacturing processes. The method is illustrated with a case study of an automotive cylinder head manufacturing line in which the resource efficiency of this part of the factory is analysed for different energy system options relating to heating ventilation and air conditioning. Firstly, the baseline is compared with the use of a solar photovoltaic array to generate electricity, and then a heat recovery unit is considered. Finally, both of these options are used together, and here it was found that the non-renewable exergy supply and exergy destruction are reduced by 51.6% and 49.2% respectively. Also, it was found that a conventional energy analysis would overestimate the resource savings from reducing the hot water supplied to the heating system, since energy analysis cannot account for energy quality. Since exergy analysis accounts for both energy quality and quantity it produces a different result. The scientific value of this paper is that it presents an exergy-based approach for factory resource accounting, which is illustrated through application to a real factory. The exergy-based approach is shown to be a valuable complement to energy analysis, which could lead to a more resource efficient system design than one based on energy analysis alone. Moreover, it investigates the working principles, category and utilization of closed heat source heat pump air conditioning system. Abstract: Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems account for more than 15% of the total energy consumption in the US. In order to improve the energy efficiency of HVAC systems, researchers have developed hundreds of algorithms to automatically analyze their performance. However, the complex information, such as configurations of HVAC systems, layouts and materials of building elements and dynamic data from the control systems, required by these algorithms inhibits the process of deploying them in real-world facilities. To address this challenge, we envision a framework that automatically integrates the required information items and provides them to the performance analysis algorithms for HVAC systems. This paper presents an approach to identify and document the information requirements from the publications that describe these algorithms. We extend the Information Delivery Manual (IDM) approach so that the identified information requirements can be mapped to multiple information sources that use various formats and schemas. This paper presents the evaluation of the performance of a ground source heat pump system monitored plant providing heating/cooling to an office building located in the Universitat Politècnica de València in Spain. The system was designed using GLHEPRO software and it has been monitored since 2005. Once a ground source heat pump has been designed, it is important to analyze its performance along the years after its construction and check whether the design was appropriate and the simulation predictions were consistent with real experimental measurements. This paper first presents the impact of the GSHP system in the ground thermal response. The simulations obtained in GLHEPRO software will be analyzed and compared to experimental measurements. The second purpose of this work is to compare the performance simulation results of a complete ground source heat pump system model built in TRNSYS, with the experimental measurements which have been registered and collected for one cooling day. Abstract: The employment of Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioner (HVAC) technology is viable option for the dynamic thermal comfort in the transitional spaces where connect the interior and exterior space. In this paper, the optimization to thermal environment parameters in the hot summer and warm winter zone is benefit to human comfort, health and energy saving is discussed. According to the dynamic comfort equations and the advantage of artificial immune algorithm in solving combinatorial optimization to engineering problems, the artificial immune algorithm has been applied to the optimization of thermal parameters for the HVAC design within a transitional space. Abstract: Evaluating a building’s performance usually requires a high number of sensors especially if individual rooms are analyzed. This paper introduces a simple and scalable model-based virtual sensor that allows analysis of a buildings’ heat consumption down to room level using mainly simple temperature sensors. The approach is demonstrated with different sensor models for a case study of a building that contains a hybrid HVAC system and uses fossil and renewable energy-sources. The results show that, even with simple sensor models, reasonable estimations of rooms’ heat consumption are possible and that rooms with high heat consumption are identified. Further, the paper illustrates how virtual sensors for thermal comfort can support the decision making to identify the best ways to optimize building system efficiency while reducing the building monitoring cost. Abstract: This paper presents a review of studies on natural convection heat transfer in the triangular enclosure namely, in attic-shaped space. Much research activity has been devoted to this topic over the last three decades with a view to providing thermal comfort to the occupants in attic-shaped buildings and to minimising the energy costs associated with heating and air-conditioning. Two basic thermal boundary conditions of attic are considered to represent hot and cold climates or day and night time. This paper also reports on a significant number of studies which have been performed recently on other topics related to the attic space, for example, attics subject to localized heating and attics filled with porous media. Abstract: The performance of different HVAC systems varies when coupled with different buildings. This paper examines the relationship between building heating and cooling load and subsequent energy consumption with different HVAC systems. Two common HVAC systems in use throughout the UK office building stock, variable air volume (VAV) system and fan coil (FC) with dedicated outside air system, have been coupled with a typical narrow plan office building with and without daylight control and for both cellular and open plan. The results presented in this paper clearly indicate that it is not possible to form a reliable judgment about building energy performance based only on building heating and cooling loads. For the two investigated systems, variable air volume system and fan coil with dedicated outside air system, the difference between system demand and building demand varied from over −40% to almost +30% for cooling and between −20% and +15% for heating. If a heat recovery unit is used, the difference in heating performance is even greater, rising to −70%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Design engineers commonly oversize HVAC systems with the justification of needing a reasonable safety factor to manage periods more extreme than the specific design conditions. Unfortunately, the safety factor easily becomes excessive. The design engineers minimize their professional risk, and by doing so they are actually asking the building owner to pay an immediate penalty due to increased first cost of equipment and an ongoing penalty due to maintenance and energy use implications. The penalties associated with excessive safety factors are often not communicated to the client. This paper presents the results of a study of “rightsizing” rooftop HVAC systems. The study included intensive interviews with HVAC designers investigating the design process and extensive field measurement of rooftop units (RTUs) during peak cooling conditions. This paper focuses on defining the signature of oversizing, i.e. how to use the physical measurements to quantify the degree of oversizing of an RTU and how to estimate the penalty of oversizing in terms of energy consumption and peak electricity demand. Utility companies incentive programs have not yet identified mechanisms for incentivizing rightsizing of HVAC system. Abstract: A data-driven approach for modeling indoor-air-quality (IAQ) sensors used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is presented. The IAQ sensors considered in the paper measure three basic parameters, temperature, CO2, and relative humidity. Three models predicting values of IAQ parameters are built with various data mining algorithms. Four data mining algorithms have been tested on the HVAC data set collected at an office-type facility. The computational results produced by models built with different data mining algorithms are discussed. The neural network (NN) with multi-layer perceptron (MLP) algorithms produced the best results for all three IAQ sensors among all algorithms tested. The models built with data mining algorithms can serve as virtual IAQ sensors in buildings and be used for on-line monitoring and calibration of the IAQ sensors. Abstract: Thermally activated building systems (TABS) integrate the building structure as energy storage, and have proofed to be energy efficient and economic viable for the heating and cooling of buildings. Although TABS are increasingly used, in many cases control has remained an issue to be improved. In this paper, a method is outlined allowing for automated control of TABS in intermittent operation with pulse width modulation (PWM). This method represents one part of a TABS control solution with automatic switching between cooling and heating modes for variable comfort criteria which was published before. A first pulse width modulation control solution is derived based on a simple 1st order model of TABS. Then a second, even simpler solution is given that significantly reduces the tuning effort. Finally, the paper outlines a pulse width modulation control procedure and gives two application examples of the PWM control carried out in a laboratory test room. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract Understanding occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort is essential to defining the operational settings for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings. Due to the continuous impact of human and environmental factors, occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort level can change over time. Thus, to dynamically control the environment, thermal comfort should be monitored in real time. This paper presents a novel non-intrusive infrared thermography framework to estimate an occupant's thermal comfort level by measuring skin temperature collected from different facial regions using low-cost thermal cameras. Unlike existing methods that rely on placing sensors directly on humans for skin temperature measurement, the proposed framework is able to detect the presence of occupants, extract facial regions, measure skin temperature features, and interpret thermal comfort conditions with minimal interruption of the building occupants. The method is validated by collecting thermal comfort data from a total of twelve subjects under cooling, heating and steady-state experiments. The results demonstrate that ears, nose and cheeks are most indicative of thermal comfort and the proposed framework can be used to assess occupants’ thermal comfort with an average accuracy of 85%. Aiming to utilize the flexibility of smart buildings for flexible operation of active distribution network, a combined modeling and optimal scheduling method for the active distribution network with integrated smart buildings is proposed in this paper. Based on the heat storage characteristics of a building, the energy consumption prediction model of the building considering different heating zones with different orientations is developed using the Resistor-Capacitor thermal network model. Then, different optimal control methods of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system in the building are developed. The energy consumption management of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system is achieved by adjusting the room temperature within the suitable temperature comfort range. In order to further consider the impact of the integration of smart buildings on the economic and security operation of the active distribution network, the optimal scheduling method of the active distribution network with integrated smart buildings is developed considering the load factor of the aggregation of the smart buildings. Finally, the optimal scheduling results of the aggregation of the smart buildings under different heating, ventilation and air-conditioning control methods in the winter heating scenario are analyzed. In addition, based on the branch flow model, the optimal power flow model of active distribution network with on-load tap changer is constructed by piecewise linearization and second-order cone relaxation to achieve flexible and optimal operation of the active distribution network. Thus, the impacts of the optimal schedules of the aggregation of smart buildings on the economic and security operation of the active distribution network are further evaluated. Numerical studies demonstrate that the proposed optimal scheduling method can make full use of the demand response potential of the smart buildings and further contribute to the operating costs reduction of the smart buildings. Meanwhile, the optimization of the active distribution network with the load factor of the aggregation of buildings can reduce the power loss and increase the minimum voltage magnitude of the active distribution network utilizing the flexibility of the smart buildings. A solid-desiccant system that utilizes low grade heat is potentially a viable add-on to conventional HVAC systems since it can help reduce power consumption significantly, for achieving indoor thermal comfort conditions. In contrast to desiccant wheels which carry out adiabatic dehumidification, isothermal dehumidification process that may be realized by a cross-flow heat exchanger is much more efficient. In this paper, a novel mathematical model is developed to simulate heat and mass exchange phenomena of a desiccant coated fin tube heat exchanger (DCFTHX). This model takes solid side mass transfer resistance as well as fin efficiency into consideration. The model is validated using experimental results in the literature. It is also compared against simplified models to establish its utility. A parametric study is then conducted to investigate the effects of geometrical parameters as well as mass flow rate of water and air velocity on dehumidification and adsorption heat removal performance of the DCFTHX as well as the performance of the augmented air-conditioning system under warm and humid ambient conditions. Under the range of parameters and conditions simulated, if low grade waste heat (50 °C hot water) is available for regeneration, integration of DCFTHX sub-system with a conventional air conditioning system can yield as high as 31% energy savings (even when the additional power consumed by pumps and blower fans is accounted for). This paper investigates air-conditioning (AC) usage patterns and adaptive comfort behaviors in a Chinese residential context. Field measurements were conducted in 43 homes in Tianjin from May 14 th to November 20 th in 2016. Indoor temperatures and AC on/off events were recorded. Occupants’ “right-here-right-now” thermal perception and adaptive behaviors were collected. 4,743 AC events and 1,697 online comfort questionnaires were collected. Average duration for AC cooling events in summer was 3.24 hrs per house and the average duration for AC heating events in winter was 0.96 hrs per house. Tianjin residents were less sensitive to indoor air temperature, compared to those in offices. The indoor temperatures corresponding to 80% thermal acceptability ranged from 21.0℃ to 27.3℃. We also derived statistical models to predict the likelihood of adaptive behaviors (i.e. turning on AC, turning on fans and opening windows or doors) with regard to outdoor air temperatures. As an important part of the air conditioning system, the operating performance of the cooling tower has a direct impact on heating and refrigeration of the air conditioning system. Now the cooling towers are placed in the room in many high-end buildings, which results in poor ventilation of the cooling towers. In order to improve the efficiency of the cooling towers, the organized air exhaust scheme of cooling towers should be adopted to reduce or prevent the back-mixing of humid air around the cooling towers. A design method of tower group operation performance in semi-closed space was proposed and the air distribution around the cooling towers in semi-closed space under the organized air exhaust scheme was simulated numerically in this paper. The object of this study is a super high-rise building with 10 layers podium and 164 layers main building. The cooling tower room is 67.3m long, 65m wide and 21.6m high, 13 sets of cooling towers are installed in the cooling tower room. The complicated actually physical structure is simplified and the areas of inlet and outlet are established according to the actual area of 50% in the process of numerical simulation. The airflow distribution and flow resistance characteristics around the cooling towers were obtained through the numerical simulation of air-flow organization around cooling towers. The numerical results show that the exhaust air of cooling towers can be expelled from the semi-closed space smoothly with the organization of air exhaust and the airflow in cooling tower machine room is relatively stable, the inlet air volume of cooling towers can reach rated air flow rate and the cooling towers can run efficiently under the rated condition. The outdoor low temperature fresh air can be used as a free cold source to eliminate waste heat for the building interior zones during the transition season and winter. This paper takes a project in Hunan as an example, and the project building interior zones is 25m×7m×3.9m(L×W×H). Using Fluent software to simulate the temperature field and velocity field both the interior and exterior zones of the engineering offices. The simulation results show that using the displacement ventilation system to take the outdoor air into inner rooms not only cooling but also improving the air quality and adding comfort. According to the simulation results and outdoor air dry bulb temperature and enthalpy values, the h - d diagram is divided into three air conditioning conditions (summer, winter, transition season), and three different operation adjustment methods have been proposed corresponding to each air conditioning condition, which will reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning system. This paper describes a method to overcome current limitations in BIM software to design Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) functions of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems through the extension of the IFC-files with information on control functions. The method is illustrated with the description of control functions for a use case including a boiler, a thermal storage, an air handling unit and a floor heating system modelled with a widely used BIM software tool. The focus is set on the description of three simple control functions: the definition of a heating curve, the setup of time schedules for the air handling unit and the flow temperature control for the heating circuit. The proposed method is based on available software tools linked together and enables adding complementary information on controls into the IFC-file, checking it for consistency, extracting and converting the IFC content into a linked data format. The use of semantic web technology allows for interoperability with various applications like e.g. software used for the commissioning or the supervision of HVAC systems and thus can contribute to reduce current quality and performance deficits of these systems. In a central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, the set-points for several local control loops have a significant influence on the overall energy performance of the system. Real-time optimization (RtOpt) of those set-points has therefore been widely studied. However, due to the nonlinear dynamics of the HVAC system as well as the constraints associated with the system operation, real-time optimization always suffers from a heavy on-line computational load when those set-points are optimized simultaneously. To overcome this problem, multiplexed real-time optimization (MRtOpt) has been developed, which optimizes only one set-point at a time but with a faster optimization frequency. Because frequently resetting the set-points introduces artificial disturbances into the local control loops and may deteriorate the system stability, this paper presents a study to enhance the system stability of the multiplexed real-time optimization by integrating a degree of freedom (DOF) based set-point reset to renew the set-points instead of the conventional step-change set-point reset. The control performance of the integrated strategy was investigated using case studies. The results showed that around 10% of the energy saving was achieved by the proposed method compared with a method without real-time optimization. When compared with the conventional real-time optimization method, the proposed method resulted in around 70% computational load reduction, and over 26% reduction in the tracking errors of the local control loops. Real-time optimization (RTO) has been developed to improve the cost and/or energy efficiency of complex heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. In current literature, almost all of the developed real-time optimization methods belong to the type of time-driven optimization, in which the action of optimization is triggered by “time”. As optimization should be done when the system operating conditions experience a change that is large enough to cause current operational setting not optimal any more, optimization strategies should recognize ‘significant’ changes and perform optimization when necessary. Since the time-driven optimization is a periodic mechanism in nature while those ‘significant’ changes may not be periodic, the time-driven optimization cannot capture ‘significant’ changes and do the optimization promptly. Therefore, this paper proposes an event-driven optimization (EDO) for complex HVAC systems, the key idea of which is to use “event” rather than “time” to trigger the action of optimization. A systematic event-driven optimization method is illustrated, where its main tasks, including event definition and event identification, will be discussed. As a novel promising energy-saving dehumidification technology, desiccant coated heat exchanger (DCHE)-based air conditioning systems have attracted immense attention recently. This paper provides a quick and reasonable selection of desiccant materials for DCHE systems using water as the cooling medium in different buildings and climates. By the theoretical calculation of moisture needed to be removed in three types of buildings (offices, residential buildings and restaurants) and the analysis of the dehumidification capacity of desiccants in DCHEs reported in the literature, optimal desiccants for different building types and ambient air conditions under given parameters are recommended. Salt-supported porous composite desiccants possess flexible dehumidification performance and can be utilized in most climates and building types, except for extremely humid indoor environments with high requirement for fresh air. Zeolites are especially suitable for return air states, American Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) summer and ARI humid climates in buildings with moderate indoor moisture gain, such as offices or residential buildings. Polyelectrolytes can be applied in humid climates and buildings with high indoor wet loads, such as restaurants. Building energy simulators such as TRNSYS, EnergyPlus, and Esp-r offer an excellent opportunity for detailed design of house thermal model and its Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system and provide very accurate simulation results useful for performance analysis and optimization process. In contrast, these energy simulators do not include sub-models of advanced devices/strategies for control of HVAC system operation and suffer from poor control mechanism. In addition to lack of an advance controller, they inherently offer no mechanism for estimating the future state of their process models based on forecast weather dataset. Hence, no predictive controller can be designed and implemented within these simulators. This paper discusses the development of a Matlab-TRNSYS co-simulator in order to control/manage a TRNSYS program, which was previously developed and calibrated based on the characteristics of a real case study house, with an advanced predictive controller. This co-simulator investigates the effectiveness of different predictive strategy planning models, including Load Shifting (LSH), Smart Dual Fuel Switching System (SDFSS), and LSHSDFSS, as the integration of fuel switching and load shifting strategy planning models on 24 h ahead energy cost saving of the case study house HVAC system. Simulation results of different consecutive sample days indicate that SDFSS could bring significant energy cost saving. To date, religious facilities have received little attention in the published literature regarding energy use and efficiency. With unique operating and building characteristics, these buildings have distinct opportunities for analysis in regards to building energy use and occupant comfort. With overall lower average energy intensity, religious facilities rarely receive energy assessments or are operated by experienced personnel. Therefore, identifying common issues is critical for training church owners in energy efficiency. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and occupant comfort in two religious facilities. The analysis reveals that the largest opportunities for reduction in energy use come from proper maintenance and operation of HVAC equipment and schedules. Temperature setbacks are shown to be an important operational setting to reduce energy usage. An accompanying analysis on thermal comfort reveals that temperature setbacks must be coupled with sufficient preconditioning of the space to ensure occupant comfort during intermittent building occupancy. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems consume almost half of the total energy consumption in buildings. In order to reduce the energy consumption of HVAC systems in buildings, different passive heating and cooling strategies and thermal energy storage systems have been adopted. Water wall is an excellent short-term thermal energy storage system which can be used to maintain thermal comfort in buildings while reducing the heating and/or cooling load of the buildings. A significant amount of research work on water wall has been carried out since the 1980s. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the previous studies of water wall systems, focussing mainly on the performance of various configurations of water wall systems and the different research approaches adopted in the literature. The advantages and disadvantages of the different research approaches have been highlighted. It is revealed that the existing water wall research has been based mainly on an energy balance model and experimental modelling, but CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modelling has attracted little attention. Energy signatures for air conditioning systems can have characteristics which are not seen with heating systems. This paper explains and illustrates some of the characteristics that are specific to air conditioning systems and describes how energy signatures that take account of them can be applied to produce benchmarks, control charts and diagnostic information. It focusses on the use of energy signatures derived from measured daily system energy consumption. Daily energy signatures can generate more robust energy consumption benchmarks and provide additional insight into unusual energy demand patterns compared to monthly or weekly signatures, albeit requiring slightly more data. In particular, they distinguish between weekday and weekend consumptions. They can be used to generate benchmarks based on standardised annual consumption or standardised annual load factor. In addition they can be used to generate control charts to identify days of unusual consumption for individual systems. This paper aims to quantify the performance of Model Predictive Control (MPC) for a typical commercial building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system across a wide range of climate and weather conditions. The motivation of the study comes from the fact that although there is a large body of work on MPC for HVAC systems, there is a lack of studies that examine the range of possible performance of MPC, in terms of both energy savings and maintaining indoor climate (temperature and humidity) as a function of outdoor weather. A challenge in conducting such a study is developing an MPC controller that can be used in a wide range of weather. The root cause of this challenge is the need for a tractable cooling and dehumidification coil model that can be used by the MPC controller, since the coil may operate in quite distinct modes depending on weather. We present such an MPC controller, and then leverage it to conduct an extensive simulation campaign for fourteen climate zones in the United States and four weather conditions (winter, spring, summer, and fall) in each climate zone. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with not only a rule-based baseline controller but also with a simpler MPC controller that ignores humidity and latent heat considerations. There are several results the arise from this comparative study. One such result is that energy savings from MPC over baseline can vary dramatically based on climate and season. Another is that the effect of ignoring humidity in the MPC formulation can lead to poor indoor humidity control more in milder weather rather than in hot weather. This paper presents a nonlinear hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach for building energy systems based on Modelica. The MPC approach takes into account two characteristics that are very common for building energy systems: nonlinearities (inherent in the building envelope and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems) and discontinuities (in the form of on/ off operation, discrete operation states and operation modes). The hybrid MPC approach integrates both continuous and discrete optimization variables into the control concept and thus is capable of controlling building energy systems with binary or integer decision variables, switching dynamics or logic if-then-else constraints. By employing a time-variant linearization approach, nonlinear Modelica optimization problems are approximated with high accuracy and transformed into a linearized state-space representation. Based on the linearization output, a linearized optimization problem is generated automatically in every MPC iteration, which is extensible by various integer characteristics and is accessible for a wide range of mixed-integer solvers. A simulation study on a nonlinear Modelica building energy system demonstrates the control quality of the proposed toolchain revealing a small linearization error and successful integration of multiple integer characteristics. In practice, monthly temperature records play a major role calculating the heating and cooling degree-days of the air conditioner management in buildings. Classically, heating and cooling degree calculations are based on the comparison of outdoor temperature measurements with a standard level called the base temperature. Truncating the temperature series at a constant base temperature causes heating (deficits) and cooling (surpluses) degrees. Since outdoor temperature records are of random character, future predictions with probabilistic and statistical methods are convenient means for calculations. All previous methodologies in the literature are based on crisp logic with simple mathematical calculations. This paper proposes a new methodological approach by converting the actual temperature record probability distribution function (PDF) into a probabilistic standardized degree indicator (SDI) in normal (Gaussian) PDF form with zero mean and unit standard deviation. Furthermore, as a new evaluation methodology fuzzy logic inference calculations are provided. SDI is divided into seven classes, three for cooling, heating, and a single class for uncooled-unheated states. Heating and cooling degree changes according to SDI values are presented with crisp and fuzzy sets. The application of the methodology is made for Kadıköy urban area on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey. In the case of fuzzy set SDI air conditioned operation, it has been determined that there is cooling energy saving of approximately 25% compared to the crisp set. Wireless sensor network (WSN) for building applications has been considered by many HVAC experts as an efficient tool to promote building energy efficiency and indoor thermal comfort. This paper, therefore, proposes a strategy of using WSN to monitor the temperature distribution in a large-scale indoor space, which aims to (i) improve the quality of the measurements transmitted by wireless signals, (ii) identify the temperature distribution pattern of the large-scale space, and (iii) optimize the allocation of supply air rated flow rate to multiple supply air terminals that serve the space according to the identified temperature distribution pattern. The developed strategy is illustrated by applying it to a real WSN test bed, installed in a typical large-scale space in Hong Kong. Results are presented and discussed, which shows that the phenomenon of temperature uneven distribution was commonly existent in a large-scale space and the developed strategy was able to efficiently improve the quality of measurements by WSN and improve the temperature homogeneity in the large-scale space. Abstract: Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system energy consumption on average accounts for 40% of an industrial sites total energy consumption. Studies have indicated that 20 – 30% energy savings are achievable by recommissioning Air Handling Units (AHUs) in HVAC systems to rectify faulty operation. Studies have also demonstrated that on-going commissioning of building systems for optimum efficiency can yield savings of an average of over 20% of total energy cost. Automated Fault Detection and Diagnosis (AFDD) is a process concerned with automating the detection of faults and their causes in physical systems. AFDD can be used to assist the commissioning process at multiple stages. This paper outlines the development of an AFDD tool for AHUs using expert rules. It outlines the results of the alpha testing phase of the tool on 18 AHUs across four commercial & industrial sites with over €104,000 annual energy savings detected by the AFDD tool. Abstract: Because people spend the majority of their time indoors, the variable efficiency with which ambient PM2.5 penetrates and persists indoors is a source of error in epidemiologic studies that use PM2.5 concentrations measured at central-site monitors as surrogates for ambient PM2.5 exposure. To reduce this error, practical methods to model indoor concentrations of ambient PM2.5 are needed. Toward this goal, we evaluated and refined an outdoor-to-indoor transport model using measured indoor and outdoor PM2.5 species concentrations and air exchange rates from the Relationships of Indoor, Outdoor, and Personal Air Study. Herein, we present model evaluation results, discuss what data are most critical to prediction of residential exposures at the individual-subject and populations levels, and make recommendations for the application of the model in epidemiologic studies. This paper demonstrates that not accounting for certain human activities (air conditioning and heating use, opening windows) leads to bias in predicted residential PM2.5 exposures at the individual-subject level, but not the population level. The analyses presented also provide quantitative evidence that shifts in the gas-particle partitioning of ambient organics with outdoor-to-indoor transport contribute significantly to variability in indoor ambient organic carbon concentrations and suggest that methods to account for these shifts will further improve the accuracy of outdoor-to-indoor transport models. Abstract: This paper studied the annual thermal performance of a photovoltaic wall (PV wall) mounted on a multi-layer façade. Based on some developed unsteady-state heat transfer models for a PV wall and a normal wall, the annual thermal performance of two types of walls was simulated. Compared with a normal wall, the south-facing PV wall could reduce heat gain through the envelope by 51% in summer under Hong Kong weather conditions. The impact of the PV wall on the envelope’s heat gain and heat loss in winter was investigated for the first time, and the results indicated that the PV wall could not only significantly reduce the heat gain through the envelope in daytime, but also reduce the heat loss at nighttime. The heat gain and heat loss through the PV wall in winter were reduced by 69% and 32% respectively compared with a normal wall. Totally, an annual thermal energy consumption reduction of 52.1kWh was achieved by replacing each square meter of a south-facing normal wall by a PV wall, which is equivalent to a saving of 18.6kWh of electric energy for the air conditioning system in a building. Abstract: The falling film liquid desiccant air conditioning system is a promising technology. The wetted area, as a key factor affecting the system performance, is significantly influenced by the plate surface temperature. With a single channel internally heated regenerator, this paper experimentally investigated the impact of plate temperature on the wetted area and system performance, by obtaining the film area and temperature with a thermal camera. LiCl was chosen as the desiccant. By reducing the film contraction in the transverse direction, the increase of plate surface temperature could enhance the wetted area significantly, especially for the low solution mass flow rate. The growth rate of area increased from 0.0017 to 0.0022m2/°C when the flow rate reduced from 0.062 to 0.034kg/s. The regeneration performance also increased with the temperature. A theoretical model with an analytical solution was developed to obtain the wetted area by describing the film contraction caused by the Marangoni effect. A good match was observed for the prediction and experimental results, with an average error of 10.8%. Furthermore, the wetted width was numerically found to also increase with the decrease of film thickness and contact angle, and its change with the solution concentration was slight. This research helps researchers and engineers to accurately predict the wetted area of falling film and to improve the heat and mass transfer performance of liquid desiccant regeneration system. Abstract: HVAC energy savings have been a key focus of recent building energy management efforts, but the savings typically reduce thermal comfort for building occupants. Established thermal comfort models use complex and person-specific parameters, such as clothing insulation and metabolic rate, to predict individual comfort levels, making the design of automated comfort modelling systems a highly challenging endeavour. In this paper, we investigate the use of humidex, which encapsulates both temperature and humidity, as an easily measurable and highly representative indoor thermal comfort predictor. We verify the feasibility of humidex as an indoor thermal comfort predictor by contrasting its performance to that of the best feature set (the feature set that best predicts the thermal comfort) constructed jointly by recursive sequential forward selection and support vector regression. The analysis using the global datasets, including data from seven climate zones across three continents, shows that humidex is a favourable and easily measurable indoor thermal comfort descriptor when humidity is significant. We take away the message from the analysis and design, develop, and deploy a system that couples a deployment of sensor nodes in an office environment, where each node collects the ambient temperature and humidity at each person's desk, and an automated survey mechanism to record people's thermal sensation votes. We use subjective response through the surveys as ground truth to validate the performance of the thermal comfort prediction using humidex. Abstract: Since Willis Carrier’s invention of air conditioning in 1911, we traditionally think about building conditioning in terms of the heating and cooling of a building’s indoor air. A better idea is the heating and cooling of a building’s mass. The latter has been called the radiant method, of which a most attractive strain is the thermally activated building systems (TABS) proposed by Robert Meierhans in 1990s. In this paper, a resistor–capacitor (RC) model is built in Matlab/Simulink for studying the system requirement of a TABS-equipped building-room. Specifically, what is the requirement in the envelope thermal resistance and activated TABS thermal mass of the room so that it is able to keep the room’s indoor operative temperature within the comfort range with its surroundings at neutral mean ambient temperature? Systematic simulations show that at neutral ambient temperature, the room’s manageability requires the correct selection of thermal mass at normal value and thermal resistance within minimum envelope resistance range (MERR). With its surroundings at above neutral ambient temperature, the room with the required mass-envelope combination functions robustly, albeit with a slightly larger operative temperature variation. We introduce the term thermally manageable building, defined as buildings that can be managed with off-peak equipment, either mechanical equipment (e.g., a chiller) or (natural energy gradient driven) low-power equipment (e.g., a cooling tower). Simulation results also show that while the mean operative temperature level is maintained by cooling equipment (mechanical or low-power one), the operative temperature variation is primarily a function of a building’s thermal mass and a building’s envelope thermal resistance and, only to a small extent, a weak function of mean ambient temperature and the diurnal temperature amplitude. Abstract: India, which is in the mid latitude region, has extremly hot summers on its plains. In Northern and Central region of the country the maximum day temperature often goes beyond 45°C. The temperature inside the buildings, which generally have horizontal RCC roof, is unbearable without air conditioning. The steep rise in the cost of electricity has driven architects and builders to use passive cooling techniques in the construction. In this paper we examine the present methods that use an insulation layer to reduce the heat flux entering the living space bringing out their merits and demerits. Further we present an innovative approach in roof design that incorporates a layer of fly ash pieces which works as a porous insulation layer. The method has been implemented in a residential building in Delhi (28.380N). The experimental results demonstrate that the layer provides excellent insulation and it also shows structural stability. Abstract: Energy efficient HVAC solutions may be obtained by combining different energy sources – fossil and renewable – into single hybrid systems. This leads to a variety of system concepts with specific boundary conditions. As a consequence, the definition of a unique representation method and a standardized performance evaluation procedure is a challenging task. Currently, two international projects promoted by the IEA are dealing with the representation and the performance calculation of a particular category of hybrid systems, i.e. integrated solar assisted systems. The HPP Annex 34 “Thermally Driven Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling”, whose goal is to reduce the environmental impact of heating and cooling by the use of thermally driven heat pumps, has solar cooling as one of the systems under investigation. The joint project between SHC and HPP Task 44/Annex 38 “Solar and Heat Pump Systems” is focused on different system combinations of solar thermal collectors and heat pumps. The scope of the present paper is to show a systematic methodology to represent and evaluate the energy performance of complex hybrid systems. The proposed approach is a joint effort of the on-going IEA activities and will be discussed regarding the mentioned solar hybrid systems. Abstract: The paper presents a study of solar electricity generation and energy demand for heating and cooling of housing units’ assemblages. Two-story single family housing units, located in northern mid-latitude climate are considered in the study. Parameters studied include geometric shapes of individual units, their density in a neighborhood, and the site layout. The plan shapes of the housing units included in this study are rectangles and several variants of L shape. Site layouts studied are characterized by a straight road, a south-facing or a north-facing semi-circular road. Rectangular units and a site layout with straight road serve as reference for evaluating the effect of shape and site parameters. Results indicate that a significant increase in total electricity generation (up to 33%) can be achieved by the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems of housing units of certain shape-site configurations, as compared to the reference. The energy load of a building is affected by its orientation and shape. Increased heating demand by L variants (by up to 8%) is more than offset by annual electricity production of their BIPV systems (by up to 35%). Heating and cooling loads depend significantly on unit density in a site; Attached units require up to 30% less cooling and 50% less heating than detached configurations of the same site. Variation of surface orientation, particularly in curved site layouts, enables the spread of peak electricity generation over up to 6h. This effect may be beneficial to grid supply efficiency. Energy balance assessment indicates that some unit shapes generate up to 96% of their total energy use. Neighborhood configurations studied generate between 65% and 85% of their total energy demand. Abstract: In Kuwait, electricity is becoming an increasingly essential element of modern life. This flexible energy is used for heating, cooling, appliances, TVs, computers and transportation. The demand for electricity is growing at an average of 5.4% per year well above the world average of 2.7%. The growth of Kuwait energy demand is projected to rise sharply over coming years. The Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) expects that the peak demand will grow to 17.2 GW by the year 2013. The chilled water thermal storage (CWTS) system is one of the available techniques that can be utilized to reduce peak electricity demand of buildings when national electricity consumption is at its highest level. In this paper, Life Cycle Cost (LCC) was estimated to investigate impact of implementing CWTS for cooling of buildings for both the MEW and the consumer. Results show that CWTS operating with a load leveling strategy gives the lowest LCC compared to 50% demand limiting and full storage strategies, and is, therefore, considered as the most cost effective option for both MEW and consumer. Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems used for heating or cooling buildings, consume a considerable amount of energy. To optimize the energy consumption, the behavior of occupants must be changed. This can be achieved by providing information and suggestions to occupants. A first step is developing of a less expensive and non-invasive measurement system and metering of the electricity and heat consumed. Based on collected experimental data, it can identify the parameters of a thermal model of the house. The model obtained will be used to simulate different aspects that can help to reduce the energy consumption. This paper presents a simple solution for thermal modeling of a house which includes experimental identification of the model''s parameters. Such data are used to simulate the thermal behavior of the house and to obtain solutions to reduce energy consumption. Abstract: In this paper numerical transient simulations were used to investigate the air flow patterns, distribution and velocity, and the particulate dispersion inside an existing typical hospitalization room equipped with an advanced Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), with Variable Air Volume (VAV) primary air system designed for immune-suppressed patients never modelled before. The three-dimensional models of the room consider different, most typical, positions of the patients. Results indicate the best conditions for the high induction air inlet diffuser and the scheme of pressures imposed in the room to provide the effective means of controlling flows containing virus droplets. We believe that our work exemplifies the usefulness of numerical investigations of HVAC performances in real situations and provides important recommendations towards disease control and careful design and optimization of ventilation in hospital settings.
