Urban green spaces have long been cherished as the "lungs of the city", it can not only improve air quality and enhance residents' health. The impact of urban green spaces on air pollution and residents' health has attracted great attention. In this paper, we select 31 provinces in China as research samples and use ArcGIS software to draw spatial distribution maps of urban green spaces, air pollution, and residents' health in China, characterizing their spatiotemporal changes in order to explore whether there is a correlation among the three. On this basis, this paper utilizes panel data of Chinese provincial-level from 2010 to 2020 and conducts empirical tests through a two-way fixed effect model and a threshold regression model. The research findings are as follows: (1) Urban green spaces not only bring environmental benefits, but also health benefits, and the health benefits are greater than the environmental benefits. (2) There is a health risk of air pollution in northern China, and the health benefits of urban green spaces are not significant. Conversely, there is no health risk of air pollution in southern China, and the health benefits of urban green spaces are significant. (3) Although environmental regulations can enhance the health benefits of urban green spaces, the role of environmental regulations in enhancing the health benefits of urban green spaces may be further weakened as the economy develops. In contrast to the surge of attention to China's business registration reform per se , the environmental externalities of the reform have been somewhat neglected by mainstream academics. Adopting the difference-in-differences method alongside propensity-score matching, and utilizing the panel data of 283 cities in China from 2000 to 2013, this paper investigates the impacts of the deregulation reform on PM2.5 concentrations. The results indicate that the business registration reform has contributed to PM2.5 air pollution, with above-average impacts in central areas, but insignificant effects in western China. Furthermore, the treatment effects are stronger in cities with larger entry of small and medium enterprises and greater pressure to achieve targets for local GDP growth. Aiming to draw public attention to the problems arising from the reform, our study advocates necessary environmental regulations on business registration, which lends support to the theoretical view of "public interest" rather than "public choice". • Deregulation reform of business registration increases PM2.5 concentrations in China. • Treatment effects of deregulation reform on PM2.5 air pollution vary widely among regions. • More SME entries and higher targets for GDP growth are associated with stronger effects of deregulation reform on PM2.5. • PM2.5 air pollution should be considered during the deregulation reform in China and other developing economies. China's economic growth is accompanied by air pollution, which has harmed public health. Former scholars have explored the influencing factors of public health from different perspectives with different methods, among which family income and environmental pollution are two important factors. The paper explored the combined effects of economic level and air pollution on public health at the micro and macro level using the multivariate ordered Logit model and panel data regression model. A comparative analysis was also explored between China's eastern and western regions. The results demonstrated that: (1) Both at the micro and macro level, economic level was positively correlated with public health, while air pollution was negatively correlated with it. (2) The improvement of the economic level made public health more susceptible to air pollution at the micro level and at the macro level. (3) The higher the economic level, the lower the effect of economic growth in reducing the adverse effects of air pollution on public health. This paper proposed that sustainable economic growth should be pursued, the emissions of air pollutants should be reduced, regional development should be balanced and the development gap between China's eastern and western regions should be narrowed. China's development model of relying on heavy industry has brought huge environmental costs. Serious haze pollution has posed a threat to high-quality economic development and people's healthy life. Exploring the relationship between air pollution and industrial development and promoting the coordinated governance of economy and environment has become an important task in China's new era. Based on the satellite inversion PM2.5 concentrate data and micro industrial enterprise data in China's county-level areas, this paper uses the instrumental variable and two-stage least square (2SLS) method to test the impact of regional air pollution (RAP) on the regional industrial structure upgrading (RISU), and further reveals its impact mechanism. The results show that: (1) RAP has a negative impact on the RISU, and the introduction of instrumental variable and 2SLS method can overcome the endogenous problem of regression. (2) on average, for every 1% increase in PM2.5 concentration, the regional industrial structure height will decrease by 2%. (3) RAP hinders the RISU by affecting enterprises' fixed assets investment and innovation activities. And the sensitivity of innovation activities of state-owned enterprises to RAP is lower than that of other ownership enterprises. Prior studies have explored the relationship between public environmental concerns and air pollution, but the interaction effects and spatial factors under a systematic framework have been ignored. This paper investigates the interaction effect between public environmental concern and air pollution, moreover, a spatial panel simultaneous equation approach is employed to reduce the endogenous interference and the potential impact of spatial factors. Based on the balanced panel data of 269 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2017, we find that a 1% increase in public environmental concern will lead to a 0.049% decrease in PM 2.5 concentration, while a 1% increase in PM 2.5 concentration will lead to a 1.398% increase in public environmental concern. Meanwhile, there is a significantly spatial spillover effect of both public environmental concern and air pollution to the surrounding areas. Furthermore, our findings suggest that public environmental concern reduces air pollution by promoting government environmental regulation, and air pollution promotes public environmental concern by threatening the health of the residents. In addition, the results of heterogeneity analysis show that the interaction effect of public environment on air pollution significantly differs across regions with different heating characteristics and economic development levels. To alleviate the ecological and environmental problems caused by rapid urban development, China has formulated and implemented the new-type urbanization strategy. However, there is insufficient empirical research on the specific relationship between new-type urbanization and air pollution. Therefore, based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2018, this paper constructs a comprehensive evaluation index system of new-type urbanization using the five dimensions of population, economy, space, society, and green. The spatial Durbin model and the spatial mediating model are used to discuss the spatial effect, transmission mechanism, and regional heterogeneity of new-type urbanization on air pollution. The results show that China's air pollution mainly presents a spatial pattern of high-high agglomeration and low-low agglomeration, and there are spatial fluctuations. The construction of new-type urbanization significantly reduces local air pollution, and the industrial structure optimization, technological innovation, and energy structure adjustment are considered as important transmission mechanisms. However, under the fiscal decentralization and political tournament system in China, the policy implementation deviation may weaken the emission reduction effect of new-type urbanization, which is not conducive to regional environmental governance. From the sub-regional level, the impact of new-type urbanization on air pollution has regional heterogeneity. A robustness test confirms the reliability of our research conclusions. This study also proposes some policy suggestions that the government can utilize in grasping the policy focus of new-type urbanization construction to discover effective ways of controlling air pollution. Environmental regulation not only has a direct impact on environmental pollution, but also has an indirect impact on air pollution. This paper collects the panel data of 253 prefecture-level cities in China between 2004 and 2016. First, we used the Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) method to empirically analyze the direct and indirect effects of environmental regulation on environmental pollution. Second, this paper uses the panel threshold regression model to explore the non-linear effects of environmental regulation on environmental pollution. The results of our analysis indicate: (1) environmental regulation can directly alleviate environmental pollution. Additionally, technology innovation and industrial structure adjustment due to environmental regulation are also conducive to improving China's environmental situation. The direct effects of environmental regulation are greater than the indirect effects; (2) the influence of environmental regulation on environmental pollution has a single threshold characteristic; (3) we also found that some control variables can significantly impact environmental pollution. Linkages between air pollution and individual subjective well-being (SWB) are theorized as a key component of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Using the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) covering 12,668 residents who were interviewed for five consecutive times during 2010–2018, we find significant negative effects of air pollution on individual SWB via the change of the respondent's physical health level, physical exercise behavior and obesity risk. Specifically, a one standard deviation increase in county's annual average PM 2.5 concentrations, instrumented by thermal inversion, is associated with a 2.45 standard deviations decrease in individual SWB level. In particular, people who are male, young people, less educated group, urban resident and live in eastern or western China are more sensitive to air pollution. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development stipulates 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The implementation of this agenda will mobilize countries worldwide to incorporate the SDGs into their national development strategies. The agenda does not specify how these goals are interconnected, thus limiting their implementation. In addition, air quality affects human life and plays a vital role in achieving these SDGs. Clarifying the interconnections between SDGs related to air pollution and other SDGs will accelerate the implementation of air protection and SDGs while simultaneously promoting policy coherence. In this paper, we use the latest calculation of the SDGs in China to construct national and provincial panel data to investigate the trade-offs and synergies among Chinese air pollution-related SDGs. The findings are as follows. First, most air pollution-related SDGs have synergetic relationships, except for SDG12, which has a trade-off relationship with other air pollution-related SDGs. Second, the synergies between air pollution-related SDGs and other SDGs far outweigh the trade-offs. Third, rapidly developing areas are more likely to experience a trade-off between economic development and air pollution problems. Fourth, geographic advantages in reducing air pollution, such as being adjacent to the sea, may weaken the synergies among air pollution-related SDGs and their synergies with other SDGs. These findings indicate that most air-pollution-related SDGs and interactions between air-pollution-related SDGs and other SDGs have substantial synergy; that is, measures aimed at one goal are conducive to the advancement of other goals. This study provides insights into the spatial relationships among logistics agglomeration, technological progress, and air pollution in the sub-regions. From the perspective of new economic geography, the positive environmental externality of logistics agglomeration should outstrip its negative externality as the result of technological spillover. However, significant impacts of technological progress on the environment have not been identified in the logistics agglomeration sub-regions of many developing countries currently grappling with various environmental problems. This paper applies spatial econometrics and extended STIRPAT model to explore the roles the logistics agglomeration (LA) and technological progress (T) play in air pollution (I) using panel data from sub-regions of Chongqing in China between 2009 and 2019. The main conclusions are as follows. (1) In a global context, logistics agglomeration is a meaningful way to reduce air pollution under the interaction effect of technological progress. (2) In a sub-regional context: first, the suppressive effect of logistics agglomeration on air pollution gradually rebounds with the increase in agglomeration degree; secondly, the rebound effect of technological innovation is also evident in air pollution, and the rebound area gradually spreads from the metropolitan area to the peripheral sub-regions; finally, the interaction effect of logistics agglomeration and technological progress has a noteworthy suppression effect on air pollution, especially after the occurrence of the rebound effect of the logistics agglomeration and technological progress. In this regard, local governments should suppress the negative externalities of agglomeration with the interaction effects of technological progress while strengthening logistics agglomeration. Understanding the extent to which air pollution influences the process of attaining sustainable development goals (SDGs) may help to estimate the benefit of reducing air pollution for improving sustainable development and to evaluate the necessity and urgency of reducing air pollutants and improving air quality. In this paper, we use the latest calculation of the SDGs in China to construct provincial panel data and investigate the relationship between air pollution and Chinese SDGs. We find that reducing air pollution will not only improve the SDGs directly associated with the environment, such as SDG3 (good health and well-being) and SDG15 (life on land), but also has a close relationship with the SDGs of other dimensions, such as SDG4 (quality education), SDG9 (industrial, innovation and infrastructure), SDG12(responsible consumption and production), SDG16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), SDG17(global partnerships). Based on the actual reduction in industrial SO2 emissions and evolution of the SDGs in China, we estimate that the former contributes approximately 3.5%–12.3% of the actual change in these SDGs from 2005 to 2015. Our findings support that reducing air pollution benefits the progress of sustainable development in various ways, and the efforts of curbing air pollution and improving air quality are especially valuable for sustainable development.
