Determination of the creep model parameters is a challenging task particularly when a non-linear elastic visco-plastic (EVP) model is adopted, mainly due to the limited test duration as well as the assumption of the reference time. Therefore, this paper presents an innovative numerical solution to find the EVP model parameters applying the trustregion reflective least square optimization algorithm. The developed approach involves several available laboratory consolidation test results in the optimization procedure with the adopted commencing time to creep as a unit of time. In this paper, the laboratory results of Ottawa clay were employed to demonstrate the limitation of the recent method to obtain model parameters. Furthermore, the developed method is verified against Skå-Edeby clay in the laboratory conditions. The EVP model parameters are obtained by applying the developed method to the available laboratory consolidation results of clay samples. The analysis results of vertical strains and excess pore water pressures demonstrate that the developed method can be a feasible tool to estimate the settlement properties of clays. Abstract: Water management practice has benefited from the development of model-driven Decision Support Systems (DSS), and in particular those that combine simulation with single or multiple-objective optimisation tools. However, there are many performance, acceptance and adoption problems with these decision support tools caused mainly by misunderstandings between the communities of system developers and users. This paper presents a general-purpose decision-support system generator, GANetXL, for developing specific applications that require multiobjective optimisation of spreadsheet-based models. The system is developed as an Excel add-in that provides easy access to evolutionary multiobjective optimisation algorithms to non-specialists by incorporating an intuitive interactive graphical user interface that allows easy creation of specific decision-support applications. GANetXL’s utility is demonstrated on two examples from water engineering practice, a simple water supply reservoir operation model with two objectives and a large combinatorial optimisation problem of pump scheduling in water distribution systems. The two examples show how GANetXL goes a long way toward closing the gap between the achievements in optimisation technology and the successful use of DSS in practice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, we study the conditions in which the random hill-climbing algorithm (1 + 1)-EA compares favorably to other evolutionary algorithms (EAs) in terms of fitness function distribution at a given iteration and with respect to the average optimization time. Our approach is applicable when the reproduction operator of an evolutionary algorithm is dominated by the mutation operator of the (1 + 1)-EA. In this case one can extend the lower bounds obtained for the expected optimization time of the (1 + 1)-EA to other EAs based on the dominated reproduction operator. This method is demonstrated on the sorting problem with HAM landscape and the exchange mutation operator. We consider several simple examples where the (1 + 1)-EA is the best possible search strategy in the class of the EAs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper investigates application of SQP optimization algorithms to nonlinear model predictive control. It considers feasible vs. infeasible path methods, sequential vs. simultaneous methods and reduced vs. full space methods. A new optimization algorithm coined rFOPT which remains feasibile with respect to inequality constraints is introduced. The suitable choices between these various strategies are assessed informally through a small CSTR case study.
