The article discusses the role of parenteral nutrition (PN) in critical care. During critical illness, if a patient is not able to have food by regular means, enteral nutrition (EN) must be given; PN is commenced within 24–48 hours if EN is contraindicated or cannot be tolerated. Prescriptions for PN need to be individualized to a patient’s need based on premorbid status and current physiological needs and should involve a multidisciplinary team approach.
