A novel electrochemical sensor was constructed based on modification of polyaniline (PANI) and graphitic-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4) composites. Detection of Cd(II) ions in the aqueous environment using differential pulsed anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), contact angle (CA), and Tafel curve analyses were used to characterize the physical and electrochemical properties of electrode. We prepared a new PANI@g-C 3 N 4 composite material by combining the two substances based on their respective advantages. The composite material was applied to electrode detection for the first time, which significantly enhanced the transfer of free electrons on the surface of the electrode, improved the sensitivity of the electrode, increased the adsorption capacity of Cd ions, and significantly improved the detection effect of the electrode. Parameters such as the amount of PANI@g-C 3 N 4 modification, deposition potential, deposition time and solution pH were optimized to determine the best conditions for the detection of Cd(II) ions. Under optimal conditions, our sensor achieves a best signal at −0.78 V (vs. Ag/Agcl electrode), and exhibits a wide linear concentration range of 0.1–140 μg/L with a low detection limit of 0.05 μg/L. The sensor was successful in implementing the identification of real water samples with recoveries ranging from 91 % to 106 %. The relative standard deviation (RSD) is less than 4.31 %. Besides, the sensor has outstanding anti-interference, repeatability and steadiness. The successful application of this sensor provides a new idea for efficient detection of Cd(II) ions in aquatic environments. This study primarily investigated the heat dissipation problem in light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, designed and improved the structural designs of lighting devices of LED bulbs, and employed composite materials as the lighting structural material. This study applied holed designs, tunnel diversions, and inserted aluminum to various designs including finned and finless structures to improve the air convection effect during natural convection and reducing the LED temperature. Results showed that the highest temperature of the LED respectively dropped to 90.7 °C, 94.5 °C, and 79.0 °C when the finned structural designs of holed effects of the type of 8-mm diameter with 10 holes, tunnel diversion of the type C2 with the 8-mm external and the 6-mm internal diameters, and inserted aluminum of the type H2 of 40 mm insertion depth were applied. And analyzing the average heat convection coefficient ( h ¯ ) of the fins revealed that h ¯ was as high as 4.74 W/m 2 -k with the holed design, whereas the tunnel diversion and the inserted aluminum designs yielded coefficients of 3.71 W/m 2 -k and 4.07 W/m 2 -k, respectively. Analysis showed a decrease in the LED maximum temperature of the finless lighting device from 99.8 °C to 82.1 °C when aluminum was inserted, enabling the transfer of heat energy accumulated inside the lighting structure, and lowering the overall temperature of the lighting system and extending its lifespan. Abstract: One of the major barriers that hinder the application of forward osmosis (FO) processes is the lack of optimized membranes that possess high water flux, low salt leakage and good anti-internal concentration polarization (ICP) and anti-fouling/anti-scaling properties during practical FO operations. In this study, novel composite FO hollow fiber membranes with an RO-like selective skin and an NF-like secondary selective skin were successfully developed for the first time. The fabrication procedures involved making ultrafiltration hollow fiber substrate using poly(amide–imide) (PAI) polymer material via phase inversion method, followed by interfacial polymerization (IP) and chemical modification to yield a polyamide RO-like inner skin and a positively charged NF-like outer skin, respectively. It was found that the sequence of conducting IP on the substrate inner surface prior to the chemical modification of the outer skin was preferred in order to achieve better performance for the resultant double-skinned hollow fibers. The newly developed FO hollow fibers exhibited high water permeability of 2.05L/m2 hbar and 85% rejection to NaCl at 1bar pressure as well as superior FO water flux of 41.3L/m2 h and low ratio of salt flux over water flux of 0.126g/L when using DI water and 2.0M NaCl as feed and draw solutions, respectively, in the active layer facing draw solution (AL-DS) orientation. Furthermore, the experimental results showed that the composite FO hollow fiber membrane was able to outperform single-skinned membrane when the feed contains divalent ions or the feed exhibits high scaling tendency to membrane. This suggested that the integration of RO- and NF-like two selective skins in FO membrane is an effective way to minimize the ICP effect, mitigate the membrane scaling and thus enhance the feasibility of FO processes for practical applications. Abstract: For the first time, a specially designed pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) hollow fiber membrane has been successfully developed and applied in the PRO process to demonstrate its potential for power generation. The membrane fabrication method is similar to that used for making thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis hollow fiber membranes, but further optimization and improvement have led to a new type of TFC hollow fiber membranes with much greater mechanical strength in addition to its excellent separation property and high water flux. The TFC PRO hollow fiber membranes have a water permeability (A) of 9.22×10−12 m/(sPa), salt permeability (B) of 3.86×10−8 m/s and structural parameter (S) of 4.6×10−4 m. It can withstand hydrostatic pressure as high as 9bar with its relatively large dimension of 0.98mm lumen diameter. This PRO hollow fiber membrane is superior to all other PRO membranes reported in the open literature in terms of power density. A power density as high as 10.6W/m2 can be achieved using seawater brine (1.0M NaCl) and wastewater brine (40mM NaCl), which suggests that the newly developed PRO hollow fiber membrane has great potential to be applied in PRO processes to harvest salinity gradient energy. A higher pressure is preferred as it allows generation of higher power density (pressures of 12bar may be optimal for seawater as the high salinity stream), and this can be realized by reduced fiber dimension. Abstract: Forward osmosis (FO) has received intensive studies recently for a range of potential applications such as wastewater treatment, water purification and seawater desalination. One of the major challenges to be overcome is the lack of an optimized FO membrane that can produce a high water flux comparable to commercial RO membranes. Two types of thin-film composite FO hollow fibers with an ultra-thin polyamide-based RO-like skin layer (300–600nm) on either the outer surface (#A-FO) or inner surface (#B-FO) of a porous hollow fiber substrate have been successfully fabricated. These novel composite FO hollow fibers have been characterized by a series of standard protocols and benchmarked against commercially available FO flat sheet membranes and reported NF hollow fibers used for the FO process. The characterization reveals that the FO hollow fiber membranes possess a large lumen. The substrates are highly porous with a narrow pore size distribution. The active layers present excellent intrinsic separation properties with a hydrophilic rejection layer and good mechanical strength. The #B-FO hollow fiber membrane can achieve a high FO water flux of 32.2L/m2 h using a 0.5M NaCl draw solution in the active rejection layer facing draw solution (AL-facing-DS) configuration at 23°C. The corresponding salt flux is only 3.7g/m2 h. To the best of our knowledge, the performance of the #B-FO hollow fiber is superior to all FO membranes reported in the open literature. The current study suggests that the optimal FO membrane structure would possess a very small portion of sponge-like layer in a thin and highly porous substrate, which suggests a way for further improvement. Abstract: The concept of fracture for material elements at front of a crack for fatigue crack propagation was extended to the fatigue crack propagation of a cracked metallic member reinforced with a composite patch in this paper. From static mechanics and linear elastic fracture mechanics, force transfer on a cracked member through a composite patch was analyzed and a formula connecting the stress intensity factor with crack length was obtained. Thereafter, a fracture model for fatigue crack propagation of a repaired cracked metallic member was proposed. A new expression for the fatigue crack propagation rate has thus been derived. The expression was verified objectively by the test data. It is in good agreement with the test results. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Composite nanofiltration (NF) hollow fiber membranes desirable for water softening under low operating pressure (<2bar) were successfully developed in the current study. The thin-film selective layer of the composite hollow fiber was formed through interfacial polymerization on the inner surface of a polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane substrate with branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) and trymesoyl chloride (TMC) employed as the monomers in aqueous and organic phases, respectively. It is found that a proper molecular weight of PEI and the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in the aqueous phase are important for a successful interfacial polymerization reaction. The resulting membrane prepared with optimized preparation parameters possesses a positively charged thin-film selective layer with pure water permeability (PWP) of about 17l/m2 hbar and a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of around 500Da, which translates into the effective pore diameter of about 1.29nm. With combined separation mechanisms of Donnan exclusion and steric hindrance, it was possible to achieve MgCl2 and MgSO4 rejection of 96.7% and 80.6%, respectively, when tested for 1000ppm feed solutions at 2bar operating pressure. In addition, for a 3000ppm TDS feed stream containing salt mixtures, the membrane rejections for Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions were found to be around 90% while the water flux was about 20l/m2 h at 2bar pressure, suggesting the potential of the newly developed composite hollow fibers for effective water softening application. Abstract Forward osmosis (FO) membranes have received attention as an energy-efficient and low-cost technique in stream concentrating processes. In this work, a novel double-skinned hollow fiber thin film composite (TFC) FO membrane has been successfully fabricated, which consists of a one-step prepared dual layer substrate and a thin inner selective layer formed via interfacial polymerization. The substrate consists of a relatively dense ultrafiltration (UF) outer layer and a porous UF inner layer, both of which were constructed from polyethersulfone (PES) as the substrate material by using dual-layer co-extrusion technique. Compared to the commercial and reported double-skinned FO membranes, the FO membrane developed in this work exhibited a higher permeate flux with humic acid solution as feed. Furthermore, the double-skinned FO membrane was applied in concentrating activated sludge using 0.5 M NaCl as draw solution, and a permeate flux at 5.4 L/m2h was achieved after 5 h operation, which was higher than or comparable to those of the reported FO membranes. Membrane autopsies and foulant analysis suggested that the dense UF skin layer helped to reject greater-sized organic foulants (> 300 Da). This study shed light on the important fabrication features and promising application of the double-skinned hollow fiber TFC FO membrane in sludge concentration. An inorganic-organic fluorinated titania-silica (fTiO 2 -SiO 2 )/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membrane was fabricated, via facile in-situ vapor-induced hydrolyzation method followed by hydrophobic modification. This low mass-transfer-resistance membrane, composing of a mesoporous layer deposited onto macroporous substrate, was designed for biogas upgrading in gas-liquid membrane contactor (GLMC) application. The surface hydroxylation was introduced to facilitate the bridging of TiO 2 -SiO 2 nanoparticles and PVDF substrate, which resulted in a more coherent deposition of the fTiO 2 -SiO 2 layer onto the substrate. The surface microstructure was fine-tuned by controlling the amount of doped Si precursor, forming an integrated mesoporous fTiO 2 -SiO 2 layer. The resultant fTiO 2 -SiO 2 /PVDF composite hollow fiber membrane exhibited a tighter pore size of ~25 nm and a desired water contact angle of ~124°, which effectively prevented membrane wetting. The CO 2 absorption fluxes of 8.0 and 5.6 × 10 −3 mol m −2 s −1 were achieved due to the lower mass transfer resistance, by using 1 M of monoethanolamine (MEA) and sodium taurinate as absorbents with a liquid velocity of 0.25 m s −1 , respectively. The long-term stability test showed a good integrity between the fTiO 2 -SiO 2 layer and the PVDF substrate after 31-days of GLMC operation. The main benefit is the robust fluorinated inorganic layer which exhibited strong chemical resistance and high hydrophobicity, thus preventing membrane damage and pore wetting. Overall, this work provides an insight into the preparation of high–performance inorganic/organic composite hollow fiber membranes for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removal in GLMC application. Extractive membrane bioreactors (EMBRs) are promising wastewater treatment processes combining an aqueous-aqueous extractive membrane process and biodegradation. The target contaminants diffuse through an extractive membrane and are metabolized by the active biofilm attached on the downstream membrane surface and microorganisms in the bioreactor. The benefit of EMBRs is that the biomass is not exposed to the potentially hostile feed conditions (high salinity, pH extremes etc.). The physicochemical properties of membrane surfaces on the receiving side facing the bioreactor are critical in controlling the extent and nature of the membrane-attached biofilm. In this work, novel nanofibrous composite membranes with a superhydrophobic surface (coded as NC) or a superhydrophilic surface (coded as M-NC) on the receiving side have been designed, developed and evaluated in EMBRs. Compared to commercial polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) tubular membranes, both NC and M-NC possessed 10 times higher phenol extraction efficiency in an aqueous-aqueous extractive membrane process. The uncontrolled biofilm growth on the membrane surface after 12 days of cross flow EMBR (CF-EMBR) operation resulted in 62% reductions of overall mass transfer coefficients ( k 0 ) of both NC and M-NC. However, both membranes exhibited better performance in a submerged EMBR (S-EMBR) configuration due to the presence of air bubbles scouring on the membrane surface. Moreover, the fouling-releasing fluoro-polymeric surface of the hydrophobic NC was able to attenuate the tendency of microbial attachment and encourage biofilm scouring from the membrane surface in the S-EMBR. In contrast, more polysaccharides were present in the biofilm on the poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)-modified M-NC surface, which acted as adhesives to tightly immobilize the biofilm on the membrane surface. Lastly, the NC which exhibited a higher stable k 0 of 5.7 × 10 −7 m/s in 12 days of S-EMBR operation, has been tested in a pilot S-EMBR to treat actual industrial wastewater. Due to its toxicity to ecosystem, phenol removal from industrial wastewater before discharge is a priority concern. Extractive membrane bioreactor (EMBR), a novel wastewater treatment process combining aqueous–aqueous extractive membrane process and biodegradation, has shown potential in treating phenol in wastewater. In this paper, composite hollow fiber membranes with different levels of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) intrusion were prepared by coating a layer of PDMS on a Polyetherimide (PEI) hollow fiber substrate. Their applicability to EMBR for phenol removal was studied. The prepared membranes were characterized by microscopy and gas permeation test, and their performances were evaluated in aqueous–aqueous extractive membrane processes and EMBR process. The overall mass transfer coefficient for phenol, or k 0 , was found to be significantly affected by the level of PDMS intrusion in the composite membranes. This is because the penetration of PDMS into the porous substrate results in a denser membrane structure, which consequently increases the membrane resistance. A slight penetration of PDMS into the substrate was found to be necessary for the composite membranes to achieve high k 0 while maintaining low inorganic flux across the membranes. Wilson-plot analysis suggests that membrane resistance dominated over liquid boundary layer resistances. After more than 250 h of EMBR operation, significant biofilm growth was observed on the composite membranes and the k 0 was dropped but stabilized at around 7.5×10 −7 m/s. This k 0 was 7.5 times higher than commercial PDMS tubular membranes (without biofilm development) reported in previous studies, confirming the superiority of thin film composite membranes prepared in this work. Novel composite forward osmosis (FO) hollow fiber membranes with two selective skin layers were developed in the present work. The polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber substrate was firstly fabricated by a phase inversion method. The RO-like polyamide skin layer was then prepared on the inner surface of the hollow fiber substrate via interfacial polymerization (IP), while the NF-like outer skin layer was prepared via polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly. Three double-skinned membranes with negative (DS#1.5), positive (DS#2.0) and minimal (DS#2.5) outer surface charges under neutral pH environment were evaluated for their capabilities against organic fouling in the FO process. The newly developed double-skinned membranes possess water permeability greater than 2 l/m 2 h bar and NaCl rejection higher than 95% under 2 bar pressure, and have superior water flux and less salt leakage than the commercial HTI FO membranes as well as all the reported double-skinned FO membranes with RO-like selective layers. Most importantly, the double-skinned DS#2.5 hollow fiber membrane exhibits exciting organic fouling resistance because of its highly hydrophilic NF-like secondary layer with minimal surface charge and tightened surface structure to mitigate possible substrate pore clogging and fouling layer formation. A stable water flux of around 25 l/m 2 h was attained for DS#2.5 membrane using <0.5 M NaCl as the draw solution and a water containing 200 ppm dextran (DEX) or Aldrich humic acid (AHA), or lysozyme (LYS) and 10 mM NaCl as the model feed in the active layer against the draw solution (AL-DS) configuration, suggesting its great potential for practical FO applications. Abstract: The performance of a forward osmosis (FO) system may be characterised by the assessment parameters: FO–RO flux ratio (J w/J w(RO)), apparent FO water permeability (J w/(π ds − π ml)), and the newly developed flux efficiency factor (J w,ob/J w,re). The former two parameters offer information on extent of internal concentration polarisation and driving force utilisation, respectively. The J w,ob/J w,re factor has practical relevance, and reveals the inevitable trade-off between flux and recovery (φ) for a FO system. The derived J w,ob/J w,re factors corresponded well to experimental observations. High water permeability, low salt-to-water permeability ratio, and large mass transfer coefficient improve the performance of a FO system, but these may also be influenced by operational and fouling effects, such as draw solute transmission, fouling resistance and cake-enhanced concentration polarisation. It was shown that membrane properties also play a significant role in fouling behaviour. Fouling amelioration factors include aeration and osmotic backwash. A thin-film composite membrane showed potential for FO application with favourable intrinsic transport parameters. It was demonstrated that a FO system could achieve stable water production with both relatively high flux efficiency (J w,ob/J w,re =0.8) and high recovery (φ =95.8%), which attested to the technology potential. Abstract: Polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membranes with tailored porous substrate and rejection layer are promising for forward osmosis (FO) applications. The current study investigates the effect of rejection layer synthesis conditions on the performance of the resulting TFC polyamide FO membranes. The influence of monomer concentrations (i.e., m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) concentrations) on the membrane separation properties as well as FO performance was systematically studied. A strong trade-off between the water permeability and salt rejection was observed, where increasing the TMC concentration or reducing the MPD concentration resulted in higher membrane permeability but lower salt rejection. In FO tests, membranes with poor salt rejection had severe solute reverse diffusion, which enhanced the internal concentration polarization (ICP). It was found that the FO water flux was governed by both the membrane water permeability and its solute rejection. For a membrane with higher water permeability but lower solute rejection, the reduced membrane frictional resistance was compensated by the simultaneously more severe solute-reverse-diffusion-induced ICP. The net effect on the FO water flux depends on the competition of these two opposing mechanisms. Under conditions where solute reverse diffusion may cause severe ICP (e.g., high draw solution concentration and high water flux level), membranes need be optimized to achieve a high salt rejection even if this is at the expense of lower water permeability. Abstract: Thin, biaxially textured Ni5W/Ni12W/Ni5W composite substrates for coated conductor applications have been fabricated. The particularity of this three-layer composite configuration resides in the elemental diffusion between the outer layer and the core layer. Due to the migration of elemental W, the diffusion layer in the as-annealed substrate becomes broader than that of the as-rolled substrate. The obtained tape has a sharp cubic texture on the Ni5W outer layers, and the volume fraction of cubic grains exceeds 98.8% (<10°) at the outer surfaces. In situ electron backscatter diffraction strain–stress analysis shows that the high-quality cubic texture was stable until elongations as high as 2%. The yield strength of the composite substrate approaches 240MPa and its saturation magnetization at 77K has been strongly reduced with respect to pure Ni and Ni5W substrates. The present results demonstrate that this advanced three-layer substrate is suitable for the epitaxial growth of the LZO buffer layers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A series of C/SiC composites was successfully synthesized via the carbothermal reduction of carbonaceous silicon xerogel, which was prepared from the sol gel method by using tetraethoxysilane TEOS and saccharose as the raw materials The obtained samples were characterized by X ray powder diffraction XRD and N2 physical adsorption The specific surface areas of the as prepared C/SiC composites varied from 329 to 849m2/g The average pore diameters and the total pore volumes were in the range of 4.5–7.6nm and 0.53–1.12cm3/g, respectively The as prepared C/SiC composites were proved to be effective supports for Ru catalysts for ammonia synthesis At 435°C, 10.0MPa and a N2/H2 (1/3) flow rate of 10000h−1, the optimum activity of 15.9% ammonia in the effluent was reached when C/SiC-5 (C/TEOS molar ratio=5) was used as the catalyst support.
