Light pipes transmit daylight into building interiors. Their installation into thermally insulated roofs of low energy buildings can be a problem because of thermal bridges and condensation problems. This article is focused on a CFD simulation thermal analysis that includes four variations of light pipes with a segment of a flat roof. Common light pipes with a hollow light guiding tube were compared to special light pipes containing an additional glass unit located inside the tube. The additional glass units increase thermal resistance and reduce condensation risks of the light guiding systems. The light pipes were compared in two different simulation models run in ANSYS Fluent software and the CalA program. Temperature profiles and air flow patterns of the cross sectional profiles of the light pipes served to determine the total heat transmittance and heat losses of the studied light pipes installed in a segment of a thermally insulated flat roof. The paper compares simplified 2D rotational–symmetrical numerical model based on the thermal diffusion equation with the complex 3D CFD numerical simulation. The results confirm that the simplified 2D numerical model is suitable for the thermal evaluation of the light pipes containing an additional glass unit, too. The additional glass unit with the triple glass improves thermal resistance up to 88% in case of light pipe with diameter 600 mm and reduces optical transmittance to 28%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the results of 1-year measurement of indoor environment parameters (temperature, relative humidity, CO 2 concentration) in exhibition rooms of one Polish museum in various periods of the year, and the results of simulation on thermal model of this building. The influence of a temperature control scheme in museum rooms on heating and cooling demand was analysed. The actual state (poor control of internal temperature) and ideal control of internal temperature were analysed – two cases in the winter and two cases in the summer. Simulations were performed by ESP-r program. The multi-zone model of the building was validated based on measurement data. Measurements and simulations revealed significant variations in the temperature in the rooms of the museum. The analysis showed that the maintaining internal temperature at constant level of 20 °C in winter reduces monthly heat demand in most of the exhibition rooms. Obtained effect is 5–16% depending on the premises. Provision the raise of a temperature by 1 K results in the increase of heat consumption by 6%. Maintenance of a desired internal temperature, which does not exceed 24 °C in the summer, requires the provision of coolness to the museum premises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work was to evaluate the interactions of users with air conditioning systems, lighting, natural ventilation, internal shading devices, and costs related to automation of a teaching building. Three behavior patterns (proactive, intermediate and careless) were created. The proactive user seeks to use natural light, uses passive solar shading and integration of natural and artificial ventilation. The intermediate user does not seek integration of natural and artificial lighting, they use hybrid ventilation as a ventilation strategy. The careless user does not use any passive strategy, predominantly uses artificial conditioning and adjusts cooling and heating setpoint to values out of the norms. In addition to the users' behaviors, the automated building was modeled. Computer simulations were performed in the EnergyPlus program, in order to measure the influence of behavior patterns on the building's energy consumption. Based on the analysis of the building's energy consumption profile, results indicate users are between the intermediate and the careless user classification, with a tendency to the intermediate user profile. Abstract: The field of building energy management, which monitors and analyses the energy use of buildings with the aim to control and reduce energy expenditure, is seeing a rapid evolution. Automated meter reading approaches, harvesting data at hourly or even half-hourly intervals, create a large pool of data which needs analysis. Computer analysis by means of machine learning techniques allows automated processing of this data, invoking expert analysis where anomalies are detected. However, machine learning always requires a historical dataset to train models and develop a benchmark to define what constitutes an anomaly. Computer analysis by means of building performance simulation employs physical principles to predict energy behaviour, and allows the assessment of the behaviour of buildings from a pure modelling background. This paper explores how building simulation approaches can be fused into energy management practice, especially with a view to the production of artificial bespoke benchmarks where historical profiles are not available. A real accommodation block, which is subject to monitoring, is used to gather an estimation of the accuracy of this approach. The findings show that machine learning from simulation models has a high internal accuracy; comparison with actual metering data shows prediction errors in the system (20%) but still achieves a substantial improvement over industry benchmark values. Abstract: Building energy performance simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, Ecotect, and eQuest are widely used to model energy performance of existing buildings and assess retrofit alternatives. Nevertheless, predictions from simulations typically deviate from actual measurements. Monitoring actual performance and measuring deviations from simulated data in 3D can help improve simulation accuracy through model calibrations, and in turn facilitate identification of energy performance problem. To do that, this paper presents Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling that leverages collections of unordered digital and thermal imagery, in addition to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. First, users collect large numbers of digital and thermal imagery from the building under inspection using a single thermal camera. Through an image-based reconstruction pipeline, actual 3D spatio-thermal models are automatically generated and are superimposed with expected building energy performance models generated using CFD analysis through a user-driven process. The outcomes are EPAR models which visualize actual and expected models in a common 3D environment. Within the EPAR models, actual measurements and simulated results can be systematically compared and analyzed. The method is validated on typical residential and instructional buildings. The results demonstrate that EPAR models facilitate calibration of building energy performance models and support detection and analysis of building performance deviations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the tropics, daylighting from a side window requires shading to intercept direct sunlight from the window whilst allowing penetration of daylight from sky. In this paper, daylighting from a double-pane glazed window with enclosed horizontal slats (slat window) was investigated for which it is situated on either north or south wall of a room. Full-scale experiments and simulations were conducted to characterize distribution of the interior daylight from the slat window under a real tropical climate. Performance of the slat window was evaluated in terms of the “useful daylight illuminance” (UDI), interior daylight availability and light power density (LPD) of an integrated dimmable lighting system. Empirical formulas were developed for determining annual average LPD values of the dimmable lighting system over its served area. The LPD value can be used with a reduced form of the energy equation of Thailand's building energy code to evaluate the reduced annual electrical energy consumption for accreditation of the daylight use in a building. The analysis of life cycle cost proved that the daylighting from the slat window integrated with the dimmable lighting system is cost effective. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Energy consumption of buildings depends significantly on the criteria used for the indoor environment and building design and operation. The environmental factors that define the indoor environmental quality are: thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic comfort and visual comfort. This paper approaches the numerical prediction of thermal comfort in closed spaces on the basis of PMV–PPD model, and its testing to asymmetric or nonuniform thermal radiation, as well as the indoor air quality simulation and control. The following are developed: a computation and testing model of thermal comfort in buildings, a computational model for indoor air quality numerical simulation, as well as a methodology to determine the outside airflow rate and to verify the indoor air quality in rooms, according to the European Standard CEN 1752. Also, the thermal comfort criteria for design of heating systems, the relationship between thermal environment and human performance, as well as the influence of carbon dioxide on human performance and productivity are presented. The performance of the developed computational models, implemented in two computer programs, is illustrated by using some numerical comparative applications for two building construction types. Abstract: When a wind flow approaches a building, a recirculation zone is created on the leeward side of the building. This turbulent zone behind the building increases the air mixing at the leeward openings between entering and leaving air. As a consequence the effective temperature difference is reduced at the opening, counteracting the stack effect. Therefore, the air change rate is lower than that in absence of wind. Some empirical correlations have been set up to assess the airflow rate due to the combination of stack and wind effects. However these correlations do not take into account the reduction of airflow rate in leeward conditions. This paper aims to improve the existing correlations and in particular to confront the issue related to leeward openings. The study is based on CFD simulations and full scale experiments. A comparison of Warren''s correlation with CFD and experimental results shows that this correlation captures well the stack and wind effects in windward conditions but shows poor results in leeward conditions. Thus, a new correlation has been developed by using CFD simulations in leeward conditions. The new correlation is then compared with the full-scale experiments and concords well. Abstract: In this paper a ray-tracing method is developed to describe the global solar transmittance of louver shading devices. The method is integrated in the dynamic building energy simulation program TRNSYS to assess the cooling demand and required peak cooling power in a south oriented office room. The proposed integrated approach allows calculating the solar transmittance for each time step. As the method is quite complex and requires an important computational effort, this research contrasts the results against the performance of simplified modeling and implementation approaches to assess the performance of louver shading devices. The use of view factor models not accounting for reflections in the shading device underestimates the cooling demand and the peak cooling power. It is shown that representing the shading device as a fixed reduction factor, independent of orientation and shading typology is an unacceptable simplification. However, the use of a simplified implementation of shading factors based on ray-tracing calculations is possible within acceptable margins of error. Best results are achieved by implementing solar radiation weighted monthly averages allowing to estimate the cooling demand and peak cooling power within 3%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An archetypal simulation model of office building representing variability in UK office building stock by parameterising built form, construction elements, occupancy/usage and operational/control strategy has been developed thus enabling detailed energy performance simulation to be used for stock modelling and parametric studies. The paper discusses the building characteristics needed to be considered for energy performance simulation, their values, and how they can be used in parametric studies. These parameters include built forms, fabrics (including thermal mass and insulation positioning), glazing percentages and characteristics, daylight and solar control measures and activity and operational related parameters (heating and cooling set points, ventilation rate, occupancy density and metabolic rate, equipment and lighting gain). The default parameter values suggested for the archetypal simulation model reflect typical existing and currently proposed UK office building stock. An archetypal model, combined with parametric studies, can be used in assessing energy performance of building stock and evaluating adaptation/retrofitting strategies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The building sector is an energy intensive sector, with great potential to reduce energy needs and environmental pollution. Several measures are being taken to increase the energy efficiency and avoid energy consumption in this sector. A recent trend is the nearly zero energy buildings, which was already adopted by some of the latest regulations, such as the 2010 recast of the European Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). However, to reach these goals, especially considering the existing building stock, new retrofit solutions are required, which must be well adapted to the specific building stock needs, and ensure that the building retrofit can achieve the nearly zero energy buildings standards. This paper presents a new prefabricated retrofit module solution for the facades of existing buildings, and also the steps taken to optimise its performance, which includes a judicious choice of materials, 3D modelling, cost–benefit analysis, use of different simulation tools for performance optimisation and prototyping. It is also shown the implementation of the retrofit module within an integrated retrofit approach, whose final goal was to obtain a building with the minimum possible energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Abstract: Many parameters have been used to evaluate the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs, most of them for air-conditioned buildings. In this paper, the interest is focused on parameters to assess the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs for non air-conditioned buildings. Five groups of parameters, some previously used and some newly proposed, have been analyzed. To test the evaluation parameters, numerical simulations of the periodic heat transfer through five different roof configurations have been carried out. This research shows the suitability of the energy transferred through the wall/roof during a day, the decrement factor, the discomfort degree hours, and the hot (or cold) thermal performance index to be used for thermal evaluation of wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. The sensitivity of these parameters with climatic conditions and with the outdoor surface solar absorptance is analyzed. Additionally, it has been shown that the steady-state thermal transmittance, the thermal admittance modulus, the periodic thermal transmittance modulus, and the surface decrement factor, calculated with surface temperatures, are not suitable parameters to evaluate wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. Abstract: Thermal mass combined with other passive strategies can play an important role in buildings energy efficiency, minimizing the need of space-conditioning mechanical systems. However, the use of lightweight materials with low thermal mass is becoming increasingly common. Phase Change Materials (PCMs) can add thermal energy storage benefits to lightweight constructions. There are many studies about the use of PCM in buildings, but there are still some difficulties for effective use and practical application of these materials. The study of applications used in real buildings could help us find solutions to these difficulties. This paper analyzed different PCM applications presented in highly efficient lightweight construction houses that have participated in the American Solar Decathlon, an international competition organized by U.S. Department of Energy. These houses have been tested and monitored in Washington DC, place with suitable climate conditions for short term thermal storage systems. The study started with a classification of the PCM applications and included an analysis of the systems, materials, switching temperatures, containments and design strategies used to improve the houses energy performance. Also, it included results of numerical simulations and experimentation that the participant team had done, complemented with information available in the literature about similar materials or applications. Abstract: Presently the essential research trend for sustainable buildings is the use of renewable energy sources and the development of new techniques of energy storage. Phase change materials (PCMs) may store latent heat energy in addition to the typical sensible energy capacity of current building materials, allowing to store significantly more energy during the phase change process (solid to liquid and vice versa). The incorporation of PCMs into building envelope solutions takes advantage of solar energy, contributing to the overall reduction of energy consumption associated to use of the air conditioning systems. This paper presents and discusses research developed in two main components: experimental testing and numerical simulation of a building component with PCM incorporation. The main goal of the experimental testing carried out was to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of PCM macro encapsulated into a typical Portuguese clay brick masonry enclosure wall. It is evaluated the influence of the phase change process of the PCM over the attenuation and time delay of the temperature fluctuations for indoor spaces. The experimental results allowed the calibration and validation of the numerical model, enabling to carry out parametric studies with different PCMs quantity analysing consequent temperature damping and time delay.
