Abstract: The following is a white paper (adapted here for print) for the U.S. National Research Council''s committee on Challenges and Opportunities in Earth Surface Processes, drafted at a National Science Foundation sponsored workshop associated with the 38th Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium, “Complexity in Geomorphology,” held at Duke University in October 2007. Information about several papers discussed at a meeting sponsored by the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types Inc. (FIRST) on ichthyosis held in June 2010 in the U.S. is presented. Topics include the different methods to utilize scarce resources to advance research in ichthyosis, the identification of genes associated with human disease, and the causes for the normal-appearing skin for ichthyosis. The meeting featured several researchers including Leonard Milstone.The Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types, Inc.™ ("FIRST") is a non-profit charitable organization.

Information about several papers discussed at the 2010 annual conference of the American College of Physicians on the introduction of Clinical Pearls as a teaching format to aid physician learning is presented. Topics include the 3 qualities of physician learners in mind which are to enjoy learning from cases, being precise and taking pleasures in problem solving. It presents several cases that has a multiple-choice question being answered by the live attendees using an audience response system.

The article presents abstracts of papers to be presented at the symposium to be held on December 7, 1976, at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, at the Palmer House, Chicago, Illinois in association with The Society for Investigative Dermatology Inc. Oral psoraleri photochemotherapy (PUVA) has been used for over two years in the treatment of psoriasis with good results. Because sunlight or artificial UVB is sometimes beneficial to patients with eczema, the effect of PUVA on eczema has been investigated.

The article provides information about the research papers that will be presented at the spring meeting of The Society for Investigative Dermatology Inc. that will be held on April 27-28, 1973 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Cathepsin D (CD), one of the major lysosomal proteinases, has been identified in rabbit skin. Extracts of skin were capable of degrading hemoglobin, at pH 3.2, to peptides that are soluble in trichioracetic acid. This activity was blocked by the CD inhibitor pepstatin and was eluted from a Sephadex G-100 column at a position identical to that of ultimately pure rabbit liver CD. A line of complete identity between crude skin extracts and ultimately pure CD was found in immunodiffusion studies using sheep anti-rabbit CD.

The Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium (BGS) is an annual meeting held since 1970, usually in the U.S.A., on timely topics in the field of geomorphology. A special issue of this journal presents the papers from each meeting and provides an opportunity to disseminate to the international community research relevant to that year's theme written by key people in that field. In this paper, we review the history of the BGS, examine the academic disciplines of each year's organizers, compile a list of the researchers who have made multiple contributions to BGS, note the citation impact of papers published in the annual proceedings, map the spatial distribution of the meeting locations, and categorize the gender distribution of the contributors to the symposium. Contributions from female authors to the BGS have steadily increased since the 1970s; however, from 2003 to 2013, females still only accounted for 23.6% of the proceeding's papers, an increase of 16.4% from the 1970s. These numbers are not surprising when compared to the gender distribution of the top positions in specialty groups in the U.S. Between 1989 and 2010, over 7000 citations were from articles published in BGS special issues, indicating their contributions to the geomorphology field. When normalized by the number of years the articles have been available, papers from BGS whose themes combined geomorphology with other fields (i.e., natural hazards and geomorphology), rated higher numbers of citations. The dispersion of the location of BGS meetings illustrates how the series is maturing by moving away from its origin in the U.S. northeast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents announcements related to dermatology. There will be two meetings of the Society for Investigative Dermatology Inc., in 1974. The first meeting will be on May 4, 1974 at the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey. There will be a series of workshops on the preceding evening, and the dermatology sections of the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American Society for Clinical Investigation will be held on the day following our meeting. The American Academy of Dermatology Residents' Forum session is open and awards will be given to the resident who shall be adjudged to give the most outstanding paper in this Forum.

The article presents developments related to dermatology. Papers are now being accepted for consideration for the Mohamed Amer Award. This biennial award for an original outstanding paper by a resident in training in dermatology recognizes clinical and research accomplishments of persons in training around the world. The Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association of America is accepting applications for research proposals in epidermolysis bullosa robe awarded competitively in 1987. The "Westwood Nashville Conference on Clinical Dermatology" will be held at the Opryland Hotel, Nashville, Tennessee, from October 7 to 11, 1987.

The Subsection of Dermatology of the Western Section of the American Federation for Clinical Research will meet as a part of the annual joint meeting of the Western Section of the American Federation for Clinical Research, the Western Society for Pediatric Research and the Western Association of Physicians, in Carmel, California, from January 31 through February 3, 1973. This Subsection of Dermatology is recognized and supported by the Society for Investigative Dermatology as a regional meeting of the Society. Papers for presentation at this meeting are hereby solicited. Dermatologists who wish to present a paper at this meeting but who are not members of one of the three parent organizations can without difficulty usually find a member to sponsor their presentation.

This article presents an announcement that the International Society for Bioengineering and the Skin will be celebrating its 20th year by holding an Anniversary Symposium. The meeting will be held at the Hotel Inter Continental, Miami, Florida on 15,16 and 17 February 1996. The programme will consist of invited lectures, free communications and poster papers. The faculty will include the following: J. Barhenel, E. Berardesca, S. Dikstcin, C. Edwards, S. El-Gammal, A. Y. Finlay, C. Graves, G. L. Grove, C. Gunimer, L. Hegemann and A. M. Kligman.

The Executive Committee of the Society for Investigative Dermatology decided to mobilize and join forces with the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) coalition groups, assuming an active role in this process. The NIAMS received a $29.2 million increase over the comparable 1990 appropriation. The new role of the Society in government relations must be maintained since only consistent input will result in future increases in funding. The Committee on Scientific Programs has reviewed the results of the questionnaire and determined that there is support from the membership for continuing the policy that the majority of papers should be poster presentations and substantial sentiment that there should be some increase in the number of oral presentations. The Committee is working on a program for 1991 that will address both of these imperatives.

This article presents information on the First International Parapsoriasis Symposium which will be held at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota during September 7-8, 1989. Outstanding clinicians and dermacological scientists will present scientific papers and discuss both basic and applied clinical research and its application to patients afflicted with guttate parapsoriasis and its variants.

This article presents information about developments in the field of dermatology, published in the March 1,1979 issue of the journal "Journal of Investigative Dermatology." The International Society of Tropical Dermatology is organizing its fourth World Congress to be held at New Orleans, Louisiana in October 1979. The congress will feature its customary memorial medal and award for outstanding research presented in a paper on Dermatology or Dermatology-related ecology.
