DFT calculations and descriptor-based microkinetic analysis have been performed to screen ABO 3 perovskite catalysts for methane partial oxidation. The scaling relations indicate the adsorption energies of H@O and CH 3 @B have the capability of representing the energetics of methane oxidation, and bulk oxygen vacancy formation energy is identified to be a better single descriptor of the kinetics. The resultant volcano-shaped plot shows the catalytic activity varies in the order LaMnO 3 > LaFeO 3 > LaCoO 3 ≈ LaCrO 3 , which agrees with the experimental findings and thus validates our theoretical predications. By screening 667 combinations of A- and B-cations based on electron neutrality, structural tolerance factors, and experimental verification, 77 ABO 3 have been identified to be stable. Of them, SrRuO 3 , SmRhO 3 , LaIrO 3 , NdRhO 3 , and BaOsO 3 are located at the summit of the volcano, which also exhibit satisfactory CO selectivity and enhanced carbon resistance compared to LaFeO 3 , and may act as the oxygen carrier candidates. This work gives an insight into combined experimental and DFT study of water gas shift reaction on Ni catalysts at moderately elevated temperatures. The relative reactivity of surface adsorbed species O*, OH* and H* with CO* and their catalytic consequence in reaction mechanism and kinetics was studied. DFT investigation and microkinetic analysis pointed out that the favorable reaction pathway depends on the relative reactivity of O*, OH* and H* with CO* on the surface. This paper presents a combined experimental and density functional theory study of the relative reactivity of surface species O*, OH*, and H* with CO* on nickel catalysts and their catalytic consequence in reaction mechanism and kinetics of water gas shift reaction. The kinetic study illustrates the hydrogen reaction order changes from 0.5 at relatively low hydrogen pressures to -1 at high hydrogen pressures. Detailed kinetic analysis indicated a hydrogen-induced change of the corresponding reaction pathway from hydrogen assisted CO activation to the redox mechanism with CO*+O* as a rate-determining step. The DFT investigation revealed that the surrounding surface H* atoms destabilize more significantly O* adsorption than H* adsorption, thus enhance more the reactivity of O* than H* towards reaction with CO* at high H* coverage. • The reducibility and structural stability of LaMO 3 (M = Sc - Cu) are examined. • The first four LaMO 3 perovskites have very high oxygen vacancy formation energies. • The maximum possible oxygen deficiency in LaMO 3 (M = Mn - Ni) is 0.5. • LaCuO 3 can lose one lattice oxygen atom per formula unit before it is deactivated. Periodic density functional theory calculations have been performed to examine the effect of oxygen deficiency on the structural stability of Lanthanum-based perovskites (LaMO 3), where on-site Coulomb interactions have been addressed by an additional Hubbard-type term. Calculated results indicate that with the exception of LaFeO 3 , the oxygen vacancy formation energy (Δ E f o r m a t i o n , v a c ) of LaMO 3 (M = Sc - Cu) becomes less positive when moving across the first transition metal period. The first four LaMO 3 perovskites have very high oxygen vacancy formation energies and can hardly be reduced under mild conditions, while the other five perovskites exhibit a much greater reducibility. During the formation of the first oxygen vacancy in LaMO 3 (M = Mn - Cu), the nearest neighbor transition-metal cations serve as the primary acceptors of the electrons left behind. As oxygen atoms are further removed, square-based pyramidal and tetrahedral coordination geometries appear successively, and an abrupt increase in Δ E f o r m a t i o n , v a c is observed at a specific oxygen deficiency (δ), which defines the maximum possible δ in the perovskite structures. Under this definition, the M3+ cations (M = Mn - Ni) can be possibly reduced to M2+ while LaCuO 3 may lose at most one lattice oxygen atom per formula unit before it is deactivated. The low-temperature water–gas shift (WGS) reaction is an important industrial process for producing hydrogen and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The α-MoC 1-x catalysts have shown promising performance in WGS reactions, but their activities are highly dependent on the surface structure. In this study, we investigated the effect of surface Mo and C ordinations on the low-temperature WGS activity of Pt/α-MoC 1-x catalysts using both experimental and theoretical methods. Our results reflected that as Mo: C ratio decreases, the surface free carbon and reduced number of Mo active sites led to a weakened electron transfer ability, resulting in poor catalytic activity. The 0.4% Pt/α-MoC 1-x -50 catalyst displayed superior hydrogen production activity and low apparent activation energy (E app = 58.5 kJ/mol) at low temperatures (100–200 °C). Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the high reactivity of the 0.4% Pt/α-MoC 1-x -50 catalyst was due to the strong electron transfer capability and increased number of surface Mo active sites. This study provides new insights into the structure–activity relationship and stability of α-MoC 1-x catalysts for the WGS reaction and lays the foundation for the design of WGS catalysts with high activity and stability at low temperature. Shaped metal particles are known to possess distinct catalytic properties, which is often attributed to the catalytic activities of different particle facets. In this contribution, propane dehydrogenation on Pt particles of different shapes is investigated by a combination of experiments and DFT calculations. The selectivity toward propylene and catalyst stability in propane dehydrogenation can be enhanced by shaping Pt nanoparticles under industrially relevant conditions. Octahedral particles (12.0 nm) dominated by the Pt(1 1 1) surface have higher selectivity toward propylene production and better stability than cubic particles (11.5 nm) that are dominated by the Pt(1 0 0) surface. Combined experiments and DFT calculations suggest that the weakened binding strength of propylene and increased energy barrier for the C–H bond cleavage in propylene dehydrogenation on Pt(1 1 1) compared to Pt(1 0 0) and Pt(2 1 1) contribute to the higher selectivity toward propylene by lowering the formation possibility of the deeply dehydrogenated intermediates. When coke is formed on the Pt surface, the d -band of surrounding Pt atoms is shifted farther below the Fermi level, leading to the deactivation of Pt catalyst. Abstract: First-principles calculations have been performed to examine the effect of doped Ag on the kinetics of Ni-catalyzed methane dissociation and coke formation. The close-packed Ag/Ni(111) and stepped Ag/Ni(211) surfaces as well as the defect facets with step sites blocked by Ag or C atoms are constructed to investigate the role of the coordinatively unsaturated sites in the catalytic performance of Ni nanoparticles. The most stable CH x (x =0–4) adsorption configurations and transition states for methane dissociation have been identified on both Ni and Ag/Ni surfaces. The calculated results indicate that the activation energy for methane dissociation is increased with the Ag coverage on Ni(111), and the C atoms deposited on the catalyst surface can be readily separated into small islands by Ag. On Ni(211) Ag atoms are predicted to bind preferentially to the middle-step sites which act as the nucleation center for the growth of filamentous carbon and therefore have the potential to prevent catalyst particles from being destroyed. Meanwhile, as the energy barrier for methane dissociation on the Ag-blocked Ni(211) surface is even higher than that on pure Ni(111), the active center is transferred from the stepped surface to the close-packed surface. These findings provide a rational interpretation of the experimental observations that Ag/Ni catalyst exhibits lower catalytic activity towards steam methane reforming but high resistance to coke deposition. Abstract: First-principles calculations based on density functional theory have been performed to elucidate the reaction mechanism for ethylbenzene dehydrogenation and the role of CO2 in H removal. On the basis of the experimental information and theoretical prediction, three model surfaces with Fe-, ferryl- and O-termination are constructed to represent the active Fe2O3(0001) surface. The calculated results indicate that on all of the three surfaces the C–H activation in the methylene group followed by the dehydrogenation of the methyl group is kinetically more favorable. The energy barriers for ethylbenzene dehydrogenation are lowest on the O-terminated surface, but the generated styrene is adsorbed too strongly to be released. As CO2 decomposition and the formation of HCOO are hindered by the relatively high activation energies, CO2 cannot serve as the oxidant to recover the O- and ferryl-terminated surfaces to keep the redox cycle. At the steady state of the reaction the coupling mechanism dominates on the Fe-terminated surface, with the synergistic effect between ethylbenzene dehydrogenation and the reverse water–gas shift reaction. Since the energy barrier for the formation of COOH is comparable to that for H2 formation, both the one-step and two-step pathways are predicted to contribute to the coupling mechanism, although the former is more probable. Abstract: DFT–GGA calculations have been used to study the chemisorption of CH x (x =0–3), C2H y (y =3–5) and C3H z (z =3–8) on Pt(111) at the coverage of 1/9 ML. The adsorption energies, favored binding sites and geometric parameters of adsorption configurations are determined. All the carbonaceous species are found to be adsorbed on Pt(111) with C atoms sp3-hybridized. The geometries of adsorption configurations have been compared with published experimental data to evaluate the reliability of our calculation method. The calculated adsorption energies of C1 species, ranked in descending order, are as follows, C>CH>CH2 >CH3, and the similar trend has been observed with respect to the chemisorption of C2 species. As for the C3 species, propylene prefers binding to the surface in the di-σ mode and the adsorption energy is calculated to be −0.93eV. The stepwise dehydrogenation of propane to propynyl (CCCH3) is investigated by calculating the change of reaction heat, which suggests that propylidyne (CCH2CH3) is the most stable species on Pt(111). Based on the adsorption energies and Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi (BEP) analysis, propyne is predicted to be the most likely starting point for the C–C scission. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• High selectivity of core-shell alloy catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. • Linear scaling relations are established to identify the descriptor. • Microkinetic modeling is carried out to obtain turnover frequency. • Co@Pt is the best catalyst by making a compromise between activity and selectivity. Microkinetic analysis combined with the results obtained from density functional theory calculations has been performed to examine the catalytic activity and selectivity of Pt-based core-shell alloy catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. Calculated results indicate that substitution of 11 late transition metals for the core region of Pt nanoparticles would significantly modify the electronic structure of the surface Pt atoms through the strain effect and charge transfer. The core-shell catalysts are found to have less negative propylene adsorption energies and higher activation energies for the dehydrogenation reactions than Pt, thus giving rise to a lower catalytic activity and a higher selectivity toward propylene. Linear chemisorption energy and transition state energy scaling relations hold very well in the present work, and the adsorption energy of propylene is identified to be a good descriptor to represent the overall kinetics. The scaling relations also suggest that a higher catalyst selectivity toward propylene can only be achieved at the expense of a lower catalytic activity for propane dehydrogenation. If a compromise is made between catalytic activity and catalyst selectivity, Co@Pt is proposed to be the best core-shell catalyst for propane dehydrogenation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
