Understanding the effects of water absorption on the geometry of a paper sheet is important for inkjet printing applications, since internal moisture content differences may cause unacceptable out-of-plane deformations. The present work focuses on moisture-induced deformations due to a moisture content that is uniform over the thickness of the sheet. Large enough in-plane differences will cause the sheet to buckle, leading to a wavy pattern at the edges of the sheet. Two approaches are utilized to study this for levels of moisture content up to and including the threshold for buckling. An analytical approach, based on geometrically nonlinear plate theory (von Kármán theory), and a numerical one, using commercially available finite element software, are presented. As a first reference problem an isotropic circular plate, wetted uniformly at its center, is solved both analytically and numerically for the in-plane stress distribution, the buckling threshold, and the resulting buckling mode. Secondly, the same is done for an orthotropic rectangular plate, wetted at its edges. Here, in the analytical approach a Rayleigh–Ritz analysis is employed to approximate the buckling threshold. The launcher recovery method known as 'In-Air Capturing' is an innovative approach where a winged rocket stage is captured mid-air by an aircraft and subsequently towed back to the launch site. To achieve this, a capturing device attached to a tether is released from the towing aircraft. This device autonomously connects the reusable launch vehicle to the aircraft, while the two vehicles are in proximity. The tether's flexible dynamics have a strong influence on the maneuverability of the capturing device. Thus, it is critical to model the dynamics of the tether to get a realistic understanding and to evaluate feasibility of the concept. However, precise modelling and control of highly flexible systems with large deformations is both challenging and computationally intensive. For engineering applications which involve closed-loop simulations, finding a trade-off between accuracy and computational effort is crucial. In this paper, the tether is modelled as a discretized chain of rigid bodies connected by rotational springs at the joints. The tether along with the capture system is integrated in a simulation model and open loop tests are performed to analyse the system characteristics. Abstract: A wide range of mathematical models for multiple effect evaporators in process industry including paper industry are well reported in the literature but not so extensive work on the dynamic behavior of MEE system is available in the literature. In the present study dynamic behavior of multi-effect evaporator system of a paper industry is obtained by disturbing the feed flow rate, feed concentration, live steam temperature and feed temperature. For this purpose an unsteady-state model for the multi-effect evaporator system is developed. Each effect in the process is represented by a number of variables which are related by the energy and material balance equations for the feed, product and vapor flow. A generalized mathematical model which could be applied to any number of effects and all kinds of feeding arrangements like forward feed, backward feed, mixed feed and spilt feed in the MEE system with simple modifications was finally obtained. Finally model for mixed feed sextuple effect falling film evaporators system was solved using MATLAB. Abstract: Capillary pressures in a carbon paper gas diffusion layer (GDL) having hydrophilic and hydrophobic pores of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) are investigated by both lattice Boltzmann simulations and experimental measurements. The simulated and measured capillary pressures as a function of water saturation for water drainage and imbibition processes in the GDL are presented and compared. It is shown that the pore-scale simulated drainage and imbibition capillary pressure curves are in good agreement with that obtained by experiment, both indicating the coexistence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties in the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) treated carbon paper GDLs. The fitted capillary pressure curves, obtained from this paper, can provide more accurate predictions of the capillary pressure in carbon paper GDLs with non-uniform porosity and wettability than the standard Leverett–Udell relationship which was obtained for soil with more uniform porosity and wettability. Abstract: This study investigated the effects of bending curvature of simulated e-paper displays (−10cm, plane and 10cm) and ambient illuminance (50, 500, 6000 and 12,000lx) on the visual performance of young and elderly users for simulated electronic-paper displays. In total, 24 people comprising 12 young and 12 elderly users participated in this study. Young users demonstrated significantly enhanced visual performance using the simulated electrophoretic ink (E ink) e-paper display with ambient illuminance set at 50 and 500lx; however, participants did not demonstrate significantly different visual performance using the 2 simulated e-paper displays with ambient illuminance set at 6000 and 12,000lx. The bending curvature did not exhibit significant effects on the visual performance of young participants under various ambient illuminances. The elderly participants exhibited significantly enhanced visual performance using the simulated E ink e-paper display only when ambient illuminance was set at 50lx; however, participants did not exhibit significantly different visual performance using the two simulated e-paper displays with ambient illuminance set at other levels. Elderly users exhibited significantly enhanced visual performance when the bending curvature was set at 10cm, with ambient illuminance set at 50lx. Elderly users also demonstrated significantly enhanced visual performance under bending curvature settings of 10cm and plane, with ambient illuminance set at 500lx. However, the bending curvature of the simulated e-paper did not exhibit significant effects on the visual performance of elderly participants under ambient illuminance settings of 6000 and 12,000lx. We describe a method for characterization of the microstructure of a paper, in terms of the statistical distribution of the effective radii and lengths of the channels between the paper''s fibers, and the average coordination numbers that characterize the connectivity of such channels, both in the main planes of the paper and in the transverse direction perpendicular to these planes. The microstructure of the paper is then represented by a three-dimensional network of interconnected flow channels between the fibers. The geometrical characteristics of the channels, such as their effective radii and lengths, are selected from the statistical distributions obtained by the characterization method, as are the two average coordination numbers. Extensive computer simulations are carried out to compute the effective permeability tensor of the paper, and to investigate the effect of the various microstructural parameters on the tensor. These simulations indicate that the two average coordination numbers, as well as the spatial distribution of the fibers and their length, strongly influence the flow properties of a paper. This paper presents the high-fidelity physical modeling of a Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system operated by Electro-Mechanical Actuators (EMAs) for Reusable Launch Vehicles (RLVs). In contrast to simplified, often linear, models, high-fidelity physical models enable a better assessment of the actual system performance and a deeper verification of the on-board software robustness against disturbances, unmodeled dynamics or degradation. This aspect is essential to enable the reusability concept as driven by long-term reliability requirements. Moreover, critical systems like Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) logic, whose robustness and efficacy are often difficult to prove, can be thoroughly tested without requiring hardware experiments with eventual invasive modifications for fault injections. This work captures the whole dynamics of the EMA and TVC components, including the power drive electronics, the electrical motor, and the mechanical transmission for the EMA, as well as the mechanical properties of the engine nozzle acting as a load. The resulting differential algebraic equation system is modeled in the Modelica acausal object-oriented modeling language. An ad-hoc framework is implemented to guarantee flexibility and modularity, which allows models with different fidelity levels to be easily exchanged to achieve the simulation objectives and needed accuracy level. The impact of the different models on the closed-loop TVC dynamics is analyzed in both the frequency and time domain, and then benchmarked with a realistic RLV mission. Abstract: Two categories of mathematical models were compared for the simulation of consolidation of paper coating structures, that is for the packing of pigments on a paper substrate under dewatering conditions. The first category uses probabilistic methods, relying on a random number generator to either determine the initial position of the pigments or their motion. The second category uses deterministic methods based on force balances. In this work, two probabilistic models and two deterministic models are described and their respective advantages and drawbacks are critically reviewed. Simulation results obtained using three of these methods are compared for the case of monodisperse and bidisperse spherical suspensions. Porosity calculations of the numerical packings obtained with the (deterministic) discrete element method (DEM) and two probabilistic methods, the Monte-Carlo (MCD) and the steepest descent (SDD) deposition methods, are compared with experimental data from the literature. These calculations reveal significant differences in the pore volume obtained with these three models. An analysis based on the bridging and relaxation phenomena that prevail in the flow of such particulate systems provide an explanation for these differences and show the strong potential of the discrete element method. The choice of the simulation method depends on the objective of the simulations. DEM will provide more accurate predictions of macroscopic quantities such as the porosity or the roughness, but requires very long computational times. MCD or SDD will only provide qualitative trends, but is computationally far less intense. A combination of strategies might be appropriate, using MCD (or SDD) to provide guidelines and DEM to enhance the results predicted by MCD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Paper is a stochastic network of fibres, water and additives, and in that sense it may be envisaged as a composite material. Since fibres are much longer than the thickness of the paper sheet, the network is planar and almost two-dimensional. The two-dimensional structure governs many paper properties but the three-dimensional porous structure is also important. Insight into the structural changes that take place when paper is compressed in the paper machine may be gained by modelling and simulation of its viscoelastoplastic behaviour. The present work describes a mathematical model based on the cellular solids theory, characterising the nonlinear rheologic behaviour of the material. This approach results in an unsteady state problem and the resulting set of ODEs is solved by means of the DLSODES subroutine, which uses an integrator based in the Gear method. Extensive computer simulations have been carried out to model imbibition of a coating fluid into a paper. The microstructure of the paper''s pore space is represented by a network of interconnected channels or pore throats that are formed between the paper''s fibers. The geometrical characteristics of the channels, such as their effective radius and length, as well as their connectivity, are selected from the experimental data presented in Part II of this series. The imbibition process that we simulate is the result of forcing the coating fluid into the pore space by applying a time-dependent flow-driven pressure distribution to the external surface of the paper, or is driven only by capillary forces. The dynamic pressure distribution is representative of a high-speed coating process. The simulations indicate that the connectivity of the pore throats, the anisotropic structure of the paper''s pore space, and the dynamic pressure distribution all have a strong influence on imbibition of a coating fluid into a paper''s pore space and, hence, on the quality of the coating. Abstract: We study the deviations for the results of the properties of a hard-sphere gas near the walls of a micro/nano channel using the hybrid MD–MC simulation method compared to the pure MD and MC results. Our model for the micro channel consists of two parallel infinite plates situated at distance L apart from each other, and of gas molecules confined between these two walls. We study the dependence of the deviations for higher densities, considering different lengths of the different simulation domains in the hybrid MD–MC method. We find that when density is increased, the deviations in the pure MC results are increasing compared to pure MD results. The deviations in the hybrid simulation results are decreasing and are very small when increasing the width of the solid–gas interface. The deviations of the pure MC simulation results from the pure MD simulation results for the number density are found to be around 0.9%, when the reduced density and the width of the channel , where λ is the mean free path. When the hybrid method is used, the deviations are decreasing with a factor from two to three, and are between 0.32%–0.42%. For more dense gas (), the deviations of the MC simulation results for the number density are found to be 1.71%, and the deviations of the hybrid MD–MC simulation results between 0.246% and 0.6977%. We discuss how these deviations in case of a dense gas () depend on the width of the interface, and we study it for the case when the MD domain is 10% and MC domain is 90% from the simulation domain, and also for the case when the MD domain is 50% and MC domain 50% from the whole simulation domain. For more dilute gas, the MC, MD and hybrid MC–MD simulations are in very good agreement and the deviations are negligible. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper introduces a flexible framework to enable high-fidelity simulations of the fuel slosh dynamics for verification of the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) algorithms. The sloshing phenomenon must be tackled during the control system design phase and the GNC software run and validated within appropriate simulation frameworks. Equivalent mechanical models can well approximate sloshing under specific assumptions, allowing the derivation of the multibody vehicle's equations of motion; however, while suitable for analysis and control synthesis purposes, this approach presents several limitations for implementation as a simulation model. In this work, the multibody plant embedding slosh dynamics is modeled by means of the DLR's Vertical Landing Vehicles Library (VLVLib) written using the object-oriented Modelica modeling language. The advantages of using Modelica are explored throughout the paper. Given that control synthesis, analyses and simulation campaigns are usually performed in the Matlab/Simulink environment, a core point of the proposed solution is to achieve a good synergy within the latter and the Modelica plant model with the least readaptation burden for the developer. The strategies to achieve a full integration and verification tool chain are illustrated. Abstract: In this paper we describe electrophoresis of charged particles in a thin layer of a nonpolar liquid between two insulating substrates because this configuration is common in recently developed in-plane electronic paper. In the in-plane electrophoresis experiments a model system of charged inverse micelles in dodecane has been used which is well understood from studies of out-of-plane electrophoresis. The transient current due to drift and diffusion of charged inverse micelles is measured in thin in-plane devices upon application of a voltage step. For the modelling of the transient dynamics of charged inverse micelles without chemical reactions or convection a 1-dimensional approximation of the Poisson–Nernst–Planck (PNP) equations is developed. This approximation is valid for a sufficiently thin in-plane device and allows much faster calculations. Firstly, it is verified in the case of a sufficiently thin in-plane device and high applied voltage that the 1-dimensional approximation is in good agreement with the solution of the full 2-dimensional PNP equations with finite elements implementation. Then, the 1-dimensional approximation is used to study the transient current and trajectories of trace amounts of charged colloidal particles in different regimes depending on the screening of the electric field. Also a comparison is made to the well-studied case of out-of-plane electrophoresis. Finally, it is verified that for voltages much larger than the thermal voltage the experimental results are in good agreement with the 1-dimensional approximation, indicating that the charge transport dynamics of charged inverse micelles in the bulk are described well by the model. This paper describes an accurate model of the Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS) of the Thermal Analysis Support and Environment Characterization Laboratory (TASEC-Lab), a university experiment developed for using in high-altitude balloon missions to measure and analyze the convection heat transfer. A Li-ion battery and two high efficient DC–DC converters have been characterized through laboratory tests and fitting to the experimental results. Torsional nano-scanners have a variety of applications in nano/micro-electro-mechanical systems. In this paper, two- and three-dimensional numerical solutions based on the lattice Boltzmann are proposed for simulating the dynamic behavior of an electromechanical torsional nano-scanner. The complete governing equations are modified based on the couple stress theory and developed by considering the effect of the Casimir force. Furthermore, the physics of the system is extended by considering the effects of dissolved electric agents on the dynamic performance of the nano-scanner. The passive/active electrolyte flow behavior with the moving solid boundary is described and simulated using Nernst-Plank-Poisson compensation of the electrolyte flow. The proposed numerical results are validated by comparing them with those available in the literature. Finally, the influence of scale dependency and Casimir force on the nano-scanner's dynamic performance and pull-in instability are investigated. Also, as torsional nano-scanners might be immersed in ionic media, the impact of ionic concentration on the pull-in voltage of a nano-scanner is investigated. In this paper, a fractional nonlinear control strategy based on the nested saturations technique and the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative for a quadrotor aircraft, to maintain desired position and orientation in stationary flight and trajectory tracking tasks, is proposed and developed. In addition, the dynamic model is obtained by using the Euler–Lagrange formulation, and then it is generalized to an arbitrary order through the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative. The traditional nonlinear control based on the nested saturation technique is also developed and implemented on the quadrotor for comparison purposes between both control schemes. Numerical simulations demonstrated the superiority of the proposed control strategy for stabilizing the quadrotor at hover and reaching the desired position and orientation, over its integer-order counterpart. In addition, three additional desired trajectories are considered, keeping the same gains and orders, to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed control scheme under different operating conditions. In this sense, our controller presents significant performance improvements, which were validated through system simulations. Evaluating the failure probability of engineering structures involving implicit performance functions generally requires time-consuming finite element simulations. The computational effort is usually unbearable, especially for small failure probability. This paper proposes a new reliability analysis method combining relevance vector machine and subset simulation importance sampling, which guarantees the accuracy of results and improves the computational efficiency. In this method, relevance vector machine is first applied to approximate relatively coarse limit states. Then, subset simulation importance sampling is executed based on the constructed relevance vector machine. To improve the prediction accuracy, samples from first and last level are used to refine relevance vector machine. Since only the samples of last level are involved in the calculation of the failure probability, and the updated relevance vector machine has a very high prediction accuracy for the samples of last level, the obtained failure probability is extremely accurate. In addition, the samples are predicted by the well-constructed relevance vector machine rather than evaluated with real performance functions, which drastically decreases the calculation time. To reduce redundant iterations in the update process, a novel learning function based on the current design of experiment position and a stopping condition based on error estimation of reliability prediction are employed. Furthermore, the K-means clustering algorithm is utilized to implement the ability of surrogate model-based subset simulation importance sampling to handle multiple failure mode problems. The computational fabrication community is developing an increasing interest in the use of patterned surfaces, which can be designed to show ornamental and unconventional aesthetics or to perform as a proper structural material with a wide range of features. Geometrically designing and controlling the deformation capabilities of these patterns in response to external stimuli is a complex task due to the large number of variables involved. This paper introduces a method for generating sets of tileable and exchangeable flat patterns as well as a model-reduction strategy that enables their mechanical simulation at interactive rates. This method is included in a design pipeline that aims to turn any general flat surface into a pattern tessellation, which is able to deform under a given loading scenario. To validate our approach, we apply it to different contexts, including real-scale 3D printed specimens, for which we compare our results with the ones provided by a ground-truth solver. With the widespread applications of sintered NdFeB, the impact-prone scenarios are often encountered. Such impacts will cause magnetic disorder inside the magnet and further demagnetization. At present, research on impact-induced demagnetization of sintered NdFeB mostly focuses on experimental investigations, lacking clear theoretical expressions and visual reproduction of the microscopic demagnetization process. To end this, this paper uses the impact-induced demagnetization experiment, theoretical expression, and micromagnetic simulation to reveal and quantify the demagnetization behavior of NdFeB. An impact-induced demagnetization experimental platform capable of producing corresponding load amplitudes is first established. The experimental results demonstrate the existence of reversible and irreversible demagnetization of NdFeB under impact. A magneto-mechanical constitutive model for sintered NdFeB considering stress history is further developed using the principle of thermodynamic, pinning effect and proximity effect. The residual magnetization intensity between the numerical simulation and the experimental results have good agreement. Finally, the demagnetization behavior of the magnet is visually displayed through the micromagnetic simulation. Employing the LLG equation and kinematic equations for elastic waves, a set of magnetization dynamics equations is established to analyze impact-induced demagnetization characteristics in sintered NdFeB. Prior research lacks understanding about how collaborative arrangements and network structures influence innovation outcomes in platform-based ecosystems. This paper addresses this gap by using an NK simulation model to investigate the impacts of different collaboration patterns and network structures on innovation performance. The NK simulation approach overcomes the shortcomings of empirical methods and enables examining the dynamic impacts. The results reveal that the "special platform + generic complementor" pattern leads to the highest innovation output. The impact of component correlations on the innovation performance follows an inverted U-shape. The small world network structure promotes innovation versus regular or random networks. The results provide novel theoretical insights into strategically configuring platform partnerships and network connections to optimize innovation. In this paper, a novel numerical simulation approach based on the finite element method for dynamically modeling the excavation process of shield tunneling is proposed, with the shield-ground interactions well captured. This method is capable of mimicking the alternating modes of advancing and stopping of a shield boring machine during underground construction, with the important effects of the cutterhead rotation and slurry support pressure considered. Under the cutting action, the soil at the excavation face would experience irreversible deformation and damage, such that additional support needs to be provided by the cutterhead blades and slurry to maintain stability. The impacts of key construction parameters are examined, including cutterhead rotary speed, advance rate, and slurry support pressure, on shield tunneling operations and ground responses. The numerical model is rigorously validated against physical model experiments. This work provides useful insights into the mechanistic processes in the stratum during shield tunneling, including the spatiotemporal evolution of ground deformation patterns and stress redistributions. • A three-dimensionally mesoscale concrete was geometrically reconstructed to reflect its heterogeneity. • A mesoscale model for sulfate-induced evolution of chemo-mechanical behavior of concrete was developed. • Chemo-mechanical response of concrete from sulfate diffusion to damage failure was numerically simulated. This paper aims at numerical description on the time-varying chemo-mechanical behavior of concrete served in sulfate-rich environments. For this purpose, a three-dimensionally (3-D) mesoscale model was developed to investigate the chemo-mechanical damage evolution of concrete under external sulfate attack (ESA). Firstly, a geometrical reconstruction of 3-D concrete at meso scale was carried out to reflect its material heterogeneity, while the mechanical property of every composition in mesoscale concrete was quantitatively characterized; Secondly, the diffusion and reaction of sulfates in concrete were modelled, while its induced expansion deformation and damage evolution of CM matrix were formulated; Finally, by numerical implementation in ABAQUS, these developed models were used to numerically simulate the space–time distributions of sulfate and ettringite concentrations, expansive deformation, cracking damage, mechanical performance and failure mode of concrete, and results from numerical simulation were consistent with the experimental observations. Consequently, the developed model can describe time-varying chemo-mechanical behavior of concrete, and it is beneficial for the performance evaluation and life prediction of concrete structures in sulfate environments. The aircraft assembly system is highly complex involving different stakeholders from multiple domains. The design of such a system requires comprehensive consideration of various industrial scenarios aiming to optimize key performance indicators. Traditional design methods heavily rely on domain expert knowledge using documents to define assembly solutions which are later verified through simulations. However, these document-centric approaches cannot provide graphical notations for engineers to efficiently understand the entire assembly process. Moreover, it is difficult to analyze the performance of the designed assembly processes using simulations since the simulation models have to be developed based on the documents manually rather than be generated automatically from the design models. In this paper, a semantic-driven approach is proposed to support aircraft assembly process formalism and performance analysis. First, meta-models of aircraft assembly processes are developed based on SysML and discrete-event simulation models using a semantic modeling language named KARMA. Then an application ontology is defined for generating semantic models from KARMA architecture models to capture domain knowledge, system requirements and simulation model information of the aircraft assembly process. A model transformer is developed to transform the KARMA models to discrete-event simulation models based on the application ontology. Then the generated simulation models are executed to obtain the simulation results for verifying the designed assembly process. Finally, the obtained simulation results are used to support decision-making of selecting the optimal aircraft assembly process. A case study is conducted to verify the proposed method. Excavation on jobsites is a collaborative effort, with a spotter serving as an extra set of eyes for the operator to ensure safety. However, current training methods using simulators are limited in immersion and primarily designed for individual operators to practice basic skills. This paper presents a multi-user teleoperation system featured with hybrid-immersive interface and between-user communication. The effectiveness of the system is evaluated through human subject experiments. The study's findings indicate that operators experienced greater immersion, a stronger sense of presence, and improved user interaction when using an immersive interface. Distribution networks aim to get the right products to consumers at the right time and in the right place. When consumers return these products, another type of logistics network is involved. This function of returning end-of-life products is referred to as reverse logistics. A critical characteristic of these reverse logistics networks is the dependence of material flow on the voluntary action of the consumer. Therefore, the success of an end-of-life collection strategy depends on the ability to anticipate the collection rate of end-of-life products at specific locations by understanding the factors that influence consumer behavior. However, there is no established tool or methodology for assessing the impact of consumer decisions on reverse logistics material flows. Therefore, this paper proposes an agent-based simulation tool to predict the performance of a reverse logistics network, taking into account the location of collection points, socio-demographic information, attitudes towards sustainable development, as well as the consumption profile. More specifically, this paper presents the configuration, calibration and validation of a simulation tool modelling the return of empty glass bottles in a small group of municipalities in Québec, Canada. • A strongly coupled model of the displacement chambers and lubricating interfaces of external gear machines is presented. • The impedance tensor of the Reynolds equation was derived to support asynchronous time stepping of the coupled simulation. • The model considers the transient deformation and inertia of all bodies, aeration and cavitation, and mixed-lubrication. • Experimental testing of a reference machine was performed for model validation. • The journal bearings contribute an average of 20% of the overall opposition to tilting of the lateral bushing compensation. This paper presents a strongly coupled simulation model, Multics HYGESim, for the displacing action of external gear machines coupled with a detailed simulation of the main lubricating interfaces (i.e. the gaps at the gear tooth tips, at the gear lateral side, and at the journal bearings). In order to allow this strong coupling, the solution of the main displacing action realized by the tooth space volumes is tied with the solution of the lubricating gaps through asynchronous time stepping. This approach is made possible by the introduction of the numerical impedance of the floating films, and by considering the dynamic fluid-structure interaction and boundary friction of the bodies with both the film and displacement chamber pressures. The resulting floating body dynamics are solved to inform the solution of both the displacing action and the lubricating films of the machine. This model is then used to simulate a reference reversible pressure-compensated external gear machine. An experimental activity is performed for preliminary validation of the model. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently developing the next generation of spacesuits for use in future exploration missions. This effort, referred to as the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU), has been underway since 2015 with the goal of demonstrating the new technologies during a mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Due to the complexity of the xEMU system, and particularly its portable life support system (PLSS), computer simulations are heavily relied on in the development process, from dynamic loads analysis to software verification. The models of the physical systems that are currently being used for system-level simulations are mostly empirical, where the underlying formulas are mathematical fits to test or simulation data. An advantage of this approach is the fact that these models are very performant and can be used in real-time applications such as user interface testing and operator training. The research presented in this paper describes a different approach to modeling and simulation. A simulation tool focused on life support systems for human spaceflight in general and PLSSs in particular has been under development at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since 2006. The spacesuit specific variant of this tool is called The Virtual Spacesuit (V-SUIT) and is now being utilized in the current spacesuit development process at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). In contrast to the previously mentioned empirical models, V-SUIT uses a first-principles-based, bottom up modeling approach, where basic physical, chemical or biological effects are modeled at the lowest level and the component and system models are created using these fundamental building blocks. This enables the simulation to account for effects, and especially off-nominal situations, that may not be within the range of validity of the empirical models. This paper presents the structure of and the rationale behind V-SUIT itself as well as a status report on the ongoing effort to integrate it with the existing simulation systems in use at JSC, which is based on Trick/GUNNS. As a proof of concept, a single component model from V-SUIT, that of the spacesuit water membrane evaporator (SWME), has been integrated with NASA's simulation tool. Results include comparisons of the performance of the two simulation systems and a description of challenges that were encountered during implementation. In the present paper, discrete element method (DEM) was employed to investigate the effect of pigment morphology on packing dynamics and compressive behavior of paper coating layers in calendering process. Spherical, platy, and needle-like particles, representing GCC, delaminated clay, and aragonite PCC pigments, were considered in this study. For each particle shape, the compression of coating structures formed by mono-sized and poly-dispersed pigments were modeled. Stress–strain behavior of the coating layers and in-plane and out-of-plane movements of the pigment particles during the compression were computed under the same maximum compressive stress. Simulation results revealed that the in-plane movements of the pigment particles during compression in the calender nip were small in magnitude (<0.35μm). These findings help to better understand the smoothening phenomena of coating structures during the calendering process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We analyze the performance of a reduced-order simulation of geometric meta-materials based on zigzag patterns using a simplified representation. As geometric meta-materials we denote planar cellular structures which can be fabricated in 2d and bent elastically such that they approximate doubly-curved 2-manifold surfaces in 3d space. They obtain their elasticity attributes mainly from the geometry of their cellular elements and their connections. In this paper we focus on cells build from so-called zigzag springs. The physical properties of the base material (i.e., the physical substance) influence the behavior as well, but we essentially factor them out by keeping them constant. The simulation of such complex geometric structures comes with a high computational cost, thus we propose an approach to reduce it by abstracting the zigzag cells by a simpler model and by learning the properties of their elastic deformation behavior. In particular, we analyze the influence of the sampling of the full parameter space and the expressiveness of the reduced model compared to the full model. Based on these observations, we draw conclusions on how to simulate such complex meso-structures with simpler models. On this basis, the local and global system kinematic reliability sensitivity of robotic manipulators are analytically obtained. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by comparison with the Monte Carlo simulation and Kriging modeling method. The supporting structure's dynamic stiffness has an important influence on the rotor system. However, current research is mainly limited to the stiffness of a single supporting structure. A single supporting structure may not meet the requirements of the rotor system in some cases. Therefore, the method of solving dynamic stiffness of combined supporting structure is presented and compared with the traditional method based on the parallel stiffness formula. The correctness of the proposed method is verified experimentally. Then, the model of rotor system is established that takes into account the combined supporting structure's dynamic stiffness. Finally, the variation of rotor system's critical speeds and vibration response under the influence of dynamic stiffness is analyzed. An experiment is carried out to verify the influence of dynamic stiffness on the critical speeds. We study numerically orientation of rigid fibres in a turbulent flow. Instead of a Lagrangian approach, i.e. following fibres along trajectories and analyzing orientations after simulations, we are using a fibre orientation probability distribution (FOPD) model. The mathematical model predicting the two spherical orientation angles (in a three-dimensional computational domain) is presented and solved in a coupled manner, which is the novelty of our approach. Furthermore, numerical predictions are validated with experiments. This article proposes an accurate and straightforward method for modeling and simulation of photovoltaic (PV) modules. The main target is to find the nine-parameter of a three-diode (TD) model based on the datasheet parameters, which are given by all commercial PV modules. The objective function is formulated based on short circuit, open circuit, power derivative, and maximum power equations. Two parameters (parallel resistance and photo-generated current) are calculated analytically and rest parameters are optimally designed using the sunflower optimization (SFO) algorithm. The presented method is applied to model three types of commercial PV modules (multicrystal KC200GT, poly-crystalline MSX-60, and mono-crystalline CS6K-280M). The optimal nine-parameters obtained in this paper are paralleled with that attained by other approaches. In order to assess the efficiency of the offered approach, I-V and P-V characteristics are validated with measured data under various temperatures and solar irradiations. The error among these results records a value less than 0.5%. Therefore, the simulation results indicate an excellent agreement with the measured data. In the early stages of health attention, such as in the examination rooms, patients are generally treated using a First In First Treat (FIFT) logic. This treatment style is inefficient from an operational view as it leads to long waiting times for critical patients. Based on optimization and discrete-event simulation, this paper introduces a hybrid model to assign patients priorities and exam rooms. Patients arrive to the system following a probability function, and for every discrete interval, a mixed-integer linear optimization model is used to allocate patients, considering health priority, preparation times, and availability of time and resources. Instances of the problem are defined using information from a health system in Mexico. Additional to the linear model, a heuristic algorithm is proposed, composed of two phases and aims to provide good, feasible, and fast solutions without ensuring optimality. Computational experiments showed that the linear model is more appropriate for small instances since the heuristic is faster and the relative deviations with respect to the linear model are below five percent. Finally, the discrete-event simulation is run for two cases: (1) with a FIFT logic and (2) using the optimization model. This paper presents a modeling and simulation study of dynamic compression behavior of Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs) at room and elevated temperatures using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) setup. The primary objective of this study is to develop and validate a constitutive model and simulation methodology capable of predicting the high strain rate response of BMGs at different temperatures. We propose a constitutive model for BMGs that accounts for the effects of high strain rates and elevated temperatures. We numerically implemented this model in ABAQUS/Explicit Finite Element Analysis software by writing a Vectorized User Material (VUMAT) subroutine. The methodology for modeling and simulation of dynamic compression of BMG specimens using the SHPB setup is developed. The present simulations are able to correctly predict the rate-independent response of Zr 41.2 Ti 13.8 Cu 12.5 Ni 10 Be 22.5 (Vitreloy-1) BMG under dynamic compression at room and elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the present simulations are also able to correctly predict the negative strain rate sensitivity (SRS) of Zr 52.5 Cu 17.9 Ni 14.6 Al 10 Ti 5 (Vitreloy-105) BMG at room temperature. Finally, the present simulations correctly predict that the failure stress of Zr 64.13 Cu 15.75 Ni 10.12 Al 10 BMG decreases with increasing temperature and exhibits a minimal positive SRS. The present study is the first successful attempt to model the mechanical response of various BMGs under dynamic compression and at room and elevated temperatures. In particular, the experimentally observed negative SRS in some BMGs has been successfully simulated. This paper proposes a new mode of cyber-physical attack based on injecting false commands, which poses an increasing risk to modern power systems as a typical example of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Such attacks can trigger physical attacks by driving the system into vulnerable states. To address the critical issues arising from this new mode, we define an inverse-community (IC) in power flow distribution and evaluate it using inverse-modularity. To identify the most vulnerable state of the IC that represents the inherent vulnerability of the system, we employ a full malicious power dispatch problem. We also analyze an example of the proposed mode, where a partial malicious power dispatch that maximizes inverse-modularity is combined with physical attacks aimed at disconnecting vulnerable IC boundary lines, making cascading failures highly likely. To demonstrate the potential impact of this coordinated cyber-physical attack, we use the IEEE-118 and IEEE-300 bus systems for simulation. Previous seismic studies have mostly focused on standalone equipment and single-span coupling systems in electrical substations. To fully consider the impact of adjacent equipment, this paper proposed and validated a motion equations-based numerical solution method for seismic responses of multi-span flexible conductor-post equipment coupling systems (CPECSs). Based on this, the influence of equipment frequency, sag-to-span ratio, peak ground acceleration, and equipment number on seismic responses of multi-span CPECSs was investigated. Finally, the equipment range that significantly influences the seismic response of a piece of equipment was studied, thus the concept of seismic correlation segment was further proposed, beyond which the equipment can be ignored in terms of its influence on seismic responses. The results indicate that the proposed numerical method exhibits enough accuracy based on the validation by simulation techniques. The influencing laws of various interconnection factors on seismic responses of equipment provide support for seismic design of substations. As mentioned in Part 1, for product iterative design, the digital simulation method, as the product performance analysis method, has the problems of time cost and computing resources. To address this issue, a product performance rapid simulation approach driven by digital twin (DT) data for variable product structures in Part 1 was proposed, which could replace the digital simulation method. Meanwhile, for performance analysis under variable operating conditions during the product design and operation phase, digital simulation also has the above problems. Therefore, based on the method for variable product structures proposed in Part 1, a product performance rapid simulation approach driven by DT data for variable operating conditions is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the framework for variable operating conditions is designed based on the makeTwin reference architecture, including twin source data acquisition for the product under different operating conditions, twin data-driven product performance rapid simulation model (RSM) construction for variable operating conditions, and rapid evaluation of product critical performance based on RSM. Then, the implementation of the framework is introduced in detail. At last, a case study for critical loosening load evaluation of bolted joint is carried out. Abstract: This paper concerns the modelling of an accumulator used in industrial elastic web processing plant such as paper mills, fabric, rolling mills etc. Accumulators are used to allow rewind or unwind core changes while the process continues at a constant web velocity. A new nonlinear model of a pneumatic actuated industrial accumulator including pneumatic jack model, static friction representation and web weight is first detailed which enables to deduce a linear model. These models are derived from physical laws that describe web tension and velocity dynamics in each web span. In a second part, the effects of time-varying mechanical parameters, such as web Young modulus, web length and rollers inertia on accumulator dynamics are presented. Polarity-dependent orientation illusions are manifested in figures in which the impression of target orientation does not depend only on geometrical relations between the elements of the figure, but also on the relations between their luminances, that is, on luminance polarities. The best-known phenomenon belonging to this class of effects is the Münsterberg/Café Wall illusion. In this paper a considerable number of examples of this type of illusions are presented, many of which are novel variants. A two-level convolutional model of such illusions is introduced, in which the first level corresponds to the stimulus input and the second level contains units fashioned after simple cells in V1, whose spatial patterns of activity represent the model's reaction to the stimulus. The main finding of numerous simulations of the model is that the figures inducing illusory impressions of tilt share a common spatial pattern of neural activation, labeled 'oblique clusters', which is absent in related non-illusory figures. Furthermore, a similar pattern is also present in simulations of figures which induce veridical impressions of tilt. The simulations suggest that the neural basis of perception of a specific degree of tilt may not be the activity of neurons tuned narrowly to that particular degree of tilt, but rather the presence of certain signature spatial patterns of activity of populations of neurons. Different time scales are inevitable for the controlled variables of wastewater treatment process (WWTP), which may degrade the operation performance or even destroy the stability of the closed-loop system. In this paper, a hierarchical nonlinear model predictive control (HNMPC) strategy is developed to deal with the different time scales of controlled variables to improve the operation performance of WWTP. The main merits of HNMPC are three-fold. First, a hierarchical control structure is developed to obtain reasonable control laws. Then, the controlled variables with different time scales can be tracked by different level controllers. Second, a gradient method is developed to solve the hierarchical optimization problem of HNMPC to reduce the computational cost. Then, the fast response of HNMPC can be achieved to improve the operation performance. Third, the stability of HNMPC is proved in theory. Then, the corresponding stability conditions are given to guide the practical application. The goal of this paper is to model and simulate the lateral photovoltage scanning (LPS) method which detects inhomogeneities in semiconductor crystals. Our drift-diffusion model is based on the semiconductor device equations combined with an implicit boundary condition which models a volt meter. To validate our 2D and 3D finite volume simulations, we use theory developed by Tauc [1] to derive three analytical predictions which our simulation results corroborate, even for anisotropic 2D and 3D meshes. Our code runs about two orders of magnitudes faster than earlier implementations based on commercial software [2]. It also performs well for small doping concentrations which previously could not be simulated at all due to numerical instabilities. We present a convergence study which shows that the LPS voltage converges quadratically. Finally, our simulations provide experimentalists with reference laser powers for which meaningful voltages can still be measured. Flexible capture has high applicability in the removal of space debris. In this paper, a novel adhesive capture mechanism is proposed, the multibody dynamic modeling method of the capture system is detailed, and an investigation of the adhesive capture process by numerical simulation is presented. First, the passive trigger mechanism of the capture device is described. Second, based on the classical rigid body mechanics and the fully parameterized ANCF beam element, the multibody model of the capture device is detailed. A contact detection algorithm is proposed to take the failure of adhesive connection into account, and its robustness and effectiveness are demonstrated. Finally, investigations of the dynamics during the capture process in two typical capture conditions are described and the impact of some system parameters on the capture effectiveness is discussed. This paper presents a method of closed-loop identification for multivariable systems without external excitation. The method is specially designed for model predictive control (MPC) systems. Without using external excitation (test signals), the method ensures the informativity of the closed-loop data and, at the same time, improve the control performance during the test period. The purpose of the study is to reduce the cost of identification test. The basic idea is to switch the input weighting matrix in the MPC controller which leads to the informativity of the data-set. A preliminary test is carried out in order to find a new input weighting matrix which improve the control performance; then a switching scheme is developed based on the two weighting matrices. Traditional simulation based model validation no longer works in closed-loop identification without excitation, and model error bounds on the frequency responses can be used instead. In this paper, a three-dimensional time-dependent Riesz space-fractional diffusion equation is considered, and an alternating direction implicit (ADI) difference scheme is proposed, in which a weighted and shifted Grünwald difference scheme (see Tian et al. (2015) [33]) is utilized for the discretizations of space-fractional derivatives, and a fractional-Douglas-Gunn type ADI method is utilized for the discretization of time derivative. The method is proved to be unconditionally stable and convergent with second-order accuracy both in time and space with respect to a weighted discrete energy norm. Efficient implementation of the method is carefully discussed, and then based on fast matrix-vector multiplications, a fast conjugate gradient (FCG) solver for the resulting symmetric positive definite linear algebraic system is developed. Numerical experiments support the theoretical analysis and show strong effectiveness and efficiency of the method for large-scale modeling and simulations. Analyzing the impacts of model parameters on model outputs is an important but challenging topic for scientific research involving simulation models. Global Sensitivity Analysis (SA) has been recently employed by many transportation researchers for such task, but a proper SA is still not a common practice. In particular, many modelers simply assume that all parameters are uncorrelated in the SA. However, this assumption is often unrealistic for traffic simulation models, in which many parameters are actually correlated, leading to wrong conclusions. In this paper, a sampling-based approach is provided for the SA of correlated parameters. It uses Gaussian copula to link the marginal distributions of individual parameters with their global distributions and correlations, and utilizes the extended Sobol' formula to estimate the variance-based sensitivity indexes in a Monte Carlo framework. Its application is illustrated using two different car-following models: the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) and the Wiedemann-74 (W74) model. Results show that this method is able to accurately quantify the sensitivity of all model parameters. As a general method, this approach can be transferred like a standard quantitative SA tool to any traffic model or complex model in the wider scientific community, especially when correlated parameters exist. This paper addresses the problem of powered descent control of a lunar lander during its final landing phase, where soft and precise landing at the target cite is required. In the literature, this problem has been solved considering a fully actuated lunar lander. Recently, landers are designed as complex systems with several onboard payloads and subsystems for completing demanding mission tasks. There are increasing constraints on mass budget and space availability onboard a lander. In order to meet these requirements, a novel controller using a single thruster is proposed. The proposed controller has three control inputs (thrust and two gimbaled angles) to control the six degrees of motion of a lander; these control inputs are non-affine. The proposed controller is designed based on variable structure control technique augmented with a high order filter, an immersion and invariance-based mass estimator and a sliding mode angular velocity observer. Most of the existing research on gyrostat systems uses the Melnikov method to analyze chaotic dynamic characteristics. The mechanism of chaotic motion from the energy perspective of gyrostat systems has rarely been analyzed. The gyrostat system with positive damping disturbance is modeled in this paper. Casimir energy and power are given. The mechanism of the orbital expansion and contraction of the gyrostat is revealed through the sign change of Casimir power and the ellipsoid of Casimir energy. The bifurcations of the Casimir power corresponding to the state bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent spectrum reflect the evolution and transition of gyrostat's dynamics. The energy-level leap expressed by the variance of Casimir energy is found to determine the bifurcation of dynamics for the first time. The coexistence of the gyrostat is explained using Casimir power and local stability of equilibrium point. The COMSOL finite element simulation platform is built to study the state changes of the displacement orbit of the frame gyrostat model. A comparison is performed for the displacement results conducted by the COMSOL and the numerical simulation for the gyrostat system kinematic model.
