Abstract: Greece and Italy are facing serious energy challenges concerning sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions as well as security of supply and the competitiveness of the internal energy market. These challenges require investments by the public sector, while the countries have seen in the last years their debts rising. A solution to promote bioenergy business, without rising public debt, could be the use of PPP (Public–Private Partnership). This paper presents a methodology to develop agro-energy business using PPP in two rural areas: the municipality of Evropos (in Greece) and the municipality of Montefalco (in Italy). At first biomass availability is studied, then the optimal technology is selected. Once technological issues have been analyzed PPP value for money has to be assessed. Conventional methods to evaluate economic viability of a project are not enough and a Public-Sector Comparator (PSC) has to be calculated. Typical risks of bioenergy projects are identified, estimating their probabilities and consequences. This will lead to associate a monetary value to each risk. Then the identified risks are allocated among private and public partners, establishing synergies. The allocation of risks will have consequences on the preparation of PPP contract and on partner selection procedure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Agriculture plays a key role in providing a wide range of ecosystem services, such as food, feed, fiber and biofuel, thus taking part in the economic development of countries. On the other hand, this sector also gives rise to negative externalities. The eco-efficiency has been considered as a meaningful index for assessing how efficient economic activities are in terms of resource-use and environmental pressures: measuring eco-efficiency provides policy makers with important information for developing policies focused on sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources in the agricultural sector. In this context, sustainable development is now one of the most important objectives of the European Union Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) that has a key role in facing the challenges of the new paradigm of sustainability of agriculture. In this direction, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the eco-efficiency of the Italian agricultural sector, as an index useful for emphasizing the differences among some national geographical areas. This paper tries to fill the lack of scientific studies on agricultural eco-efficiency in Italy, despite the strategic role played by Italy in Europe. For this purpose, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology was used, focusing on the integration between agricultural productivity and resource conservation, in order to develop a support tool for policy makers and managers. The analysis had shown a better orientation in saving resources for the Southern Regions and a greater orientation in productivity for the Northern Regions. Overall, Italy seems to have a good capacity for sustainable management of agricultural resources although there is still space for improvement. In this regard, the measurement of eco-efficiency provides a useful index for policy makers to achieve better performances in terms of agricultural sustainability. This means that CAP subsidies should be granted in exchange for specific environmental externalities provided by farmers as a result of more ecologically friendly management with a land use planning avoiding the depleting of Ecosystem Services rich areas, allowing for the achievement of a balance between economic growth and ecosystem protection. Although the paper has expanded the literature on agricultural eco-efficiency, this work has some limitations that could serve as a reference for future studies that can include other ecological variables such as the provision of some ecosystem services that can be enhanced or impacted by agricultural development. Congestion and safety at road intersections is a main traffic challenge involving several technicians. This paper focuses on spillback of a three-level intersection in Italy, where five roadways merge. More than 130 conflict points affect the existing roundabout where more than 13,000 vehicles move in the peak hour. In order to improve both capacity and level of service and to reduce delay and emissions due to queue, 4 scenarios have been investigated and designed using the Civil 3D tool. VISSIM 11 simulated their operational performances, while SimaPro allowed assessing carbon footprints. Moreover, construction, maintenance and usage costs have been estimated. The results showed that the best scenario implies new overpasses and underpasses to eliminate crossing conflict points, to reduce merging and diverging ones, and to link directly the busiest arms. This paper assesses consumer preferences and willingness to pay for three different environmental sustainability labels (EU Organic Farming, Rainforest Alliance, 'Per il Clima-Legambiente') and information cues about the origin displayed on a processed food product, namely tomato purée. Using a choice experiment and conditional logit models, the results show that: i) preferences for the environmental sustainability labelled product increase when consumers have proper knowledge about the meaning of the labels; ii) the information cue about the product's domestic origin is important for all consumers, regardless of their education, unlike environmental sustainability labels that are more appreciated by well-educated consumers; iii) consumers' willingness to pay is higher for labels with greater market penetration, regardless of certification by private or public organisations. Findings suggest that the adoption of environmental sustainability labels by food producers should be combined with effective information policies aimed at increasing consumer awareness. Currently, agriculture uses about 70–80% of global water resources and, in the Mediterranean area, it accounts for the high pressure of freshwater demand. This study provides a useful framework for the meso-level assessment of the Water Footprint (WF) in agriculture. Particularly, the WF methodology is used to quantify the water consumption and pollution of olives, grapes and tomatoes, traditional crops widespread both in the Apulia region, in Southern Italy, and in the Mediterranean area. Hence, from a meso-level assessment of the Water Footprint of Apulian agriculture, a general level of evaluation of the use of Mediterranean water resources was provided, estimating the Virtual Water (VW) too. Furthermore the climate change effects on the Water Footprint of the traditional crops identified were predicted, proposing some scenarios useful to reduce the grey component, which values for olives were evaluated by a sensitivity analysis. The results highlight that olives present the highest value of the WF and that grapes are the most affected by the variations according to the climate change scenarios, increasing over 200% of the green component and 77% of the blue one. Finally, a Circular Economy proposal, based on the reuse of the wastewater from a meso-scale perspective, highlights saving up to 70% of the water resource. The research questions proposed displayed the novelty of this paper, particularly as concerns the use of the Water Footprint analysis on a meso-level evaluation. Particularly, the new insights of this research addressed the needs of stakeholders in areas suffering from drought, such as the Mediterranean, to integrate and systematize a data-set of indicators to rationalize and plan water resource usage and safety in agriculture. Abstract: Insurance against natural perils such as flooding can be considered a significant element in coastal management. It can offer not only much-needed support to accelerate economic and social recovery following a disaster (coastal resilience) but also contribute to impact limitation by using pricing or restrictions on availability of coverage to discourage new development in hazard-prone areas. Insurance can affect the redistribution of damage costs across the population and through time, both in the short and long term. Policies of damage reduction are linked to mitigation measures for the properties (old or new buildings) by changing the depth–damage relationship while the long-run risk impacts could affect the overall damage function by discouraging new buildings in high risk areas. This paper will provide an overview of the main theoretical perspectives on insurance in flood risk management. Four different European contexts will be analysed. Abstract: Many coastal communities benefit from a lively and profitable economy based on tourism but, simultaneously, cannot rely on the ecosystem services (ESs) provided locally, which have become insufficient because of increasing demand. In the Apennines, a mountain range in central Italy, coastal areas are characterised by growing population and tourist demands and upstream lands mainly supply ecosystem goods and services. Mechanisms to re-distribute resources or payments for ESs would be helpful to foster the sustainability of regional systems. However, currently, there is neither an appreciation for such services nor institutions responsible for addressing this problem. In this paper, we analyse and rank the ecosystem services provided by the forests of two river basins to assign economic values to four ecosystem services relevant for distinguishing provision and benefit areas: soil protection, water retention, drinking water supply and CO2 sequestration. A simplified methodology was developed for contexts with poor environmental datasets. The aim was to provide ecological information to recognise ESs and encourage effective governance of ESs at a regional level. The results showed that the indirect value of the considered ecosystem services was three times higher than the direct value, and a spatial mismatch emphasised a “debt” in coastal areas from upstream areas for selected ecosystem services. Abstract: A case study is presented of a comprehensive analysis of the shoreline stability of a salient (primary response) in the lee of an emergent natural reef at Sa Mesa Longa Beach, Sardinia, Italy. The analysis combines sources of information at different levels of detail and accuracy: field surveys conducted with a GPS unit, remotely sensed imagery, geometrical and shape predictive formulas, and simulations with a 2D wave/current/sediment transport numerical model. The morphological simulation results for the primary response agree qualitatively with field observations and predictions from empirical formulas. The accuracy of a simplified wave energy model in defining the littoral sediment cell compared to the more detailed results of the morphological model is also investigated. Although the analysis has some limitations, as highlighted in the paper, the results appear to be promising in terms of applying the analysis to fragile morphologies in the lee of natural reefs in the Mediterranean Sea. Abstract: An enigmatic, c. 2km-long and 15m-high travertine ridge, the Colle Fiorito ridge, occurs in the northwestern sector of the Tivoli travertine plateau, central Italy. The main questions addressed in this paper concern the origin and mode of growth of this prominent ridge. The presence of active structures beneath the studied ridge is inferred by recent and past earthquakes located at shallow depths immediately beneath Colle Fiorito. To understand the surficial structure of the Colle Fiorito ridge and the travertine depositional environment, we constructed a 10m-resolution DEM, analyzed recent and past aerial photographs, and conducted field surveys and meso- to micro-scale sedimentological analyses. To understand the ridge subsurface structure, we studied a set of 32 stratigraphic well logs available from previous works and from the local decorative stone industry, and realized a 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) across the ridge. Results show a gentle antiformal structure affected by subvertical zones of strata discontinuity. The Colle Fiorito structure is interpreted as a previously-unknown fissure ridge travertine grown at the edge of the Tivoli travertine plateau, perhaps when the volumetric deposition rate reached its climax in the plateau for the abundance of fluid discharge and the rise of the water table. Such a fluid pressure may have activated the faults and fractures beneath Colle Fiorito, thus opening new pathways for the ascension of geothermal fluids toward the surface. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper presents an energy and environmental extended input–output model combined with the life cycle assessment, applied to assess the energy and environmental benefits arising from the Italian policy of tax deduction for energy retrofit actions of buildings. The study allowed to assess the advantages due to the above policy, taking into account both direct and indirect energy saving and avoided CO2 emissions obtained with the retrofit actions and indirect energy consumption and related CO2 emissions due to the realization of the above actions. Moreover, the authors defined an original model to assess the indirect rebound effect caused by the energy saving actions. The obtained results showed that a reliable evaluation of the benefits arising from sustainable policies strongly depends on the indirect rate of the energy consumption and energy saving, that in the examined case study has the same order of magnitude of the direct one, and on the rebound effect, that can partially avoid the obtained benefits. The study represents one of the first Italian experiences aimed at assessing the effectiveness of sustainable production and consumption strategies. It can be used to support decision-makers in the selection of policies aimed at reducing energy and environmental impacts caused by final consumptions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper aims to examine if users perceive a difference in tap water quality supplied by publicly owned or privately owned water operators. More generally, this paper analyses whether and how certain relevant variables affect water quality using customer satisfaction as an indicator of water quality. Since the decision to privatise the service may be influenced by environmental and geographical factors as well as water operators' characteristics, data were analysed using a treatment effects model, in which privatisation was considered an endogenous binary treatment variable. Data were from a sample survey of 485 students enrolled at the University of Pisa (Italy). Our results suggest that water operator ownership influences the perceived quality of the supplied tap water. Decision-makers should include water quality as a relevant issue when deciding whether to privatise water services management. In addition, since there is a relationship between the perception of tap water quality and the quality of public service provision, for policy makers, it is of utmost importance to highlight the areas where the lack of satisfaction is higher and to encourage investment and water quality improvement programmes in these contexts. • Water operator ownership influences the perceived quality of tap water. • Water quality perception is not always related to water standard compliance. • Perception of water quality relates to the quality of public service provision. • Perceived quality decreases when mixed or private firms manage the water service. The aim of Sustainable Development Goal 7 is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. Increased energy efficiency is particularly important in the construction industry because urban agglomerations currently consume up to 80% of global energy, 40% of which is attributable to buildings. In countries like Italy however, where historical buildings constitute a significant part of the building patrimony, improving energy efficiency is not always straightforward as interventions must take into account the historical materials used as well as the context of the construction. Therefore, the aim of this research was to establish a methodology that would identify the most effective means of achieving energy efficiency taking into account the historical aspects of a building and its cultural context. The methodology proposed and described in this paper involves: preliminary analyses to identify the elements of value and the level of transformability of facades; the selection of different insulating materials; dynamic simulations of building behaviour; analyses of intervention costs in relation to each type of insulation and finally the preparation of a multi-criteria matrix to identify the most effective method of improving energy efficiency of a historical wall with differing degrees of transformability. Each insulating material was analysed in relation to heating and cooling requirements and material cost impact. The methodology was applied to a case study in the Province of L'Aquila, Italy. In the paper a multicriteria framework, for the improvements in the thermal efficiency of a building, it is presented. Specifically the attention is focused on heating requirements, cooling requirements and cost impact. The results indicate that, with respect to historical building, it is possible to adopt strategies finalyzed to improve the energy efficiency of these buidings, contributing in this way, also toward the SDG7. Specifically, the best performance for a wall with a high level of transformability can be obtained using calcium silicate, extruded polystyrene, kenaf and hemp, whilst, in the case of a wall with a low level of transformability, the best materials are calcium silicate, polyurethane and linen fiber. Finally, in the case in which external constraints prevent the application of a thick coat and internally there is limited space, the use of calcium silicate was found to be the best energy efficient measure. This paper focuses on the energy and economic analysis of the Building To Vehicle To Building (V2B2) concept, conducted through a comprehensive parametric and sensitivity analysis. The idea behind this novel vehicle to building energy management is to exploit the use of electric vehicles as energy vectors to exchange electricity among buildings with the aim to accelerate the development of a novel zero energy paradigm, while promoting the deployment of renewable energy sources, accelerating the widespread usage of electric vehicles, and streamlining the regulation of charging stations in our future communities. In order to evaluate the potentials of the proposed schemes, a comprehensive parametric analysis is conducted to size the design and operating parameters which maximize the self-production and self-consumption of building integrated renewable energy technologies at a cluster level. The paper investigates the energy and economic performance of different V2B2 energy management schemes including a residential building, an office building, and an electric vehicle, which feature a basic cluster of human-linked energy consumers. The study is conducted by means of a novel in-house developed dynamic simulation tool, suitably enhanced to model the system operation. Numerical results, obtained for a representative weather zone (Mediterranean climate of Naples, South-Italy), show that through the V2B2 scheme, a remarkable exploitation of off-site renewable energy production is achieved, producing a significant reduction of fossil fuel consumption from the grid. Adopting a complex dynamic systems' perspective to address the complex and multifaceted manifestations of the Sharing Economy, this paper uses interpretative content analysis to explore three structural and functional aspects of this phenomenon: defining characteristics, main stakeholders, and systemic benefits and challenges. We realize a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of secondary and primary data, using academic papers, consulting/market reports, books, newspaper articles, videos, blog contributions, as well as interviews with 256 respondents from France, Italy and the United Kingdom. The study presents, contrasts and combines various narratives that co-create, negotiate and shape the emergent meanings and characteristics of the Sharing Economy. Introduction: The aim of this paper is to examine gender differences in the occurrence of accidents among workers while walking to or from their workplace (non-vehicle commuting accidents). We have previously found that the lower limb is more often injured at work among women, compared to men, so the paper concentrates on lower limb injuries.Methods: Using the records of the National Institute for Insurance against Injuries at Work (INAIL), we focused on the non-vehicle commuting accidents of women and men recognized as work-related for the period 2013-2017. In particular, we examined the gender difference by work sector and type of trauma suffered with particular attention to lower limb injuries.Results: The rate of non-vehicle commuting accidents (n. 60,936) among women was significantly higher than for men (1.29‰ vs 0.40‰ men, p < 0.001) for the period studied. Lower limb injuries (50.5% for women and 43.7% for men, p < 0.001) constituted the large majority of these injuries. In particular, dislocation of the ankle (78% for women vs 65.5% for men, p < 0.001), bruise of the knee (71.2% for women vs 54.9% for men, p < 0.001) and fracture of the foot (41% for women vs 33.6% for men, p < 0.001) were all significantly higher among women. The work sectors with higher injury rates were: Transport and Warehouse, Public Administration, Health and care services and Wholesale and retail trade. This result may be due to wear and tear from conditions at work. The women injured were on the average, a decade older than men (50-59 vs 40-49 years old).Conclusions: Non-vehicle commuting represents an important, albeight neglected, preventable risk for women workers, causing lower limb trauma particularly at the ankle, the foot and the knee. These areas may be particularly injure-prone among women in specific sectors, due to the work environment. • Identify the main design features of different microgrids around the world. • This paper explores the main issues arising from the development of a microgrid. • An attempt to define potential solutions to overcome the main technical issues. • It defines guidelines for practical implementation and operation of microgrids. A microgrid is a small portion of a power distribution system with distributed generators along with energy storage devices and controllable loads which can give rise to a self-sufficient energy system. From the utility grid side, a microgrid is seen as an equivalent generator that is able to seamlessly disconnect and operate autonomously once a fault affects the main grid. The design, installation and operation of such systems lead to dealing with a number of technical and operational challenges including control, protection and infrastructure requirements. To help designers and researchers address these challenges and draw potential recommendations for practical microgrid implementations, in this paper a review of the main design features of existing microgrids is undertaken, also in light of the experience gained during the realization of the Prince Lab microgrid at Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy. The main control functions required to guarantee an economic, reliable and secure operation of a microgrid are also reviewed. In 2017, over 320 million tons of polymers, excluding fibers, were manufactured across the globe. The excessive amounts of plastics produced today pose a threat to both man and nature. Urgent approaches towards reducing plastic consumption and increasing its recyclability are needed. This paper discusses the matter of accelerating the circularity of plastic-based material systems. It investigates a sample of plastics-converting companies in Emilia Romagna region (Italy), which stand out for radical innovations in business models, with the aim to catalyse changes in current manufacturing practices. The findings provide empirical support for a positive relationship between business strategies and the use of non-virgin plastic materials. The innovative value of this paper relies on the fact that it elaborates on the vision established within the European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy that sets ambitious targets about achieving high plastic recycling targets by 2025. Legislative, economic, technological and social barriers can only be tackled by radically revising the current philosophy of designing, producing, distributing and consuming plastic as part of goods and services. A systemic thinking perspective is an essential building block in this context: moving from a micro to a meso-scale analysis can represent a useful means supporting the creation of viable management approaches towards achieving environmental and economic gains, especially in European plastic conversion industry, where SMEs are the majority (about 50000). Motivations: It has recently been argued [1] that the effectiveness of a cure depends on the doctor-patient shared understanding of an illness and its treatment. Although a better communication between doctor and patient can be pursued through dedicated training programs, or by collecting patients' experiences and symptoms by means of questionnaires, the impact of these actions is limited by time and resources. In this paper we suggest that a patient-centered view of a disease - as well as potential misalignment between patient and doctor focuses - can be inferred at a larger scale through automated textual analysis of health-related forums. People are generating an enormous amount of social data to describe their health care experiences, and continuously search information about diseases, symptoms, diagnoses, doctors, treatment options and medicines. By automatically collecting, analyzing and exploiting this information, it is possible to obtain a more detailed and nuanced vision of patients' experience, that we call the "social phenotype" of diseases.Materials and Methods: As a use-case for our analysis, we consider diabetes, a widespread disease in most industrialized countries. We create a high quality data sample of diabetic patients' messages in Italy, extracted from popular medical forums during more than 10 years. Next, we use a state-of-the-art topic extraction technique based on generative statistical models improved with word embeddings, to identify the main complications, the frequently reported symptoms and the common concerns of these patients. Finally, in order to detect differences in focus, we compare the results of our analysis with available quality of life (QoL) assessments obtained with standard methodologies, such as questionnaires and survey studies.Results: We show that patients with diabetes, when accessing on-line forums, express a perception of their disease in a way that might be noticeably different from what is inferred from published QoL assessments on diabetes. In our study, we found that issues reported to have a daily impact on these patients are diet, glycemic control, drugs and clinical tests. These problems are not commonly considered in QoL assessments, since they are not perceived by doctors as representing severe limitations. Although limited to the case of Italian diabetic patients, we suggest that the methodology described in this paper, which is language and disease agnostic, could be applied to other diseases and countries, since misalignment between doctor and patients, and the importance of collecting unbiased patient perceptions, has been emphasized in many studies ([2,3]inter alia). This paper aims to present a new methodological approach for the stability assessment of coastal cliffs constituted of discontinuous rock masses. The method entails in situ specific geostructural and geomechanical surveys, three-dimensional UAV-based Photogrammetric structural models, laboratory geotechnical tests and, two- and three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEM). The application of the method to a case study is then presented and discussed; it regards a 600 m long sea rocky cliff located at Sant'Andrea (Melendugno, South of Apulia, SE Italy) and faced to the southern Adriatic Sea. Here the cliff is made up of an about 15 m-thick sequence of laminate calcisiltites alternate with bioturbated calcarenites belonging to the Uggiano la Chiesa Fm. (Middle-Upper Pliocene). The structural discontinuities detected with photogrammetry techniques were compared and validated with those derived from conventional in situ survey methods. Electrical energy consumption data accessibility for low voltage end users is one of the pillars of smart grids. In some countries, despite the presence of smart meters, a fragmentary data availability and/or the lack of standardization hinders the creation of post-metering value-added services and confines such innovative solutions to the prototypal and experimental level. We take inspiration from the technology adopted in Italy, where the national regulatory authority actively supported the definition of a solution agreed upon by all the involved stakeholders. In this context, smart meters are enabled to convey data to low voltage end users through a power line communication channel (CHAIN 2) in near real-time. The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it describes the proof of concept that the channel underwent and its subsequent validation (with performances nearing 99% success rate). On the other hand, it defines a classification framework (I2MA) for post-metering value-added services, in order to categorize each use case based on both level of service and expected benefits, and understand its maturity level. As an example, we apply the methodology to the 16 use cases defined in Italy. The lessons learned from the regulatory, technological, and functional approach of the Italian experience bring us to the provision of recommendations for researchers and industry experts. The paper presents an automated procedure, named META-FORMA (MEchanical-Typological Approach FOR Masonry Aggregates), to investigate the global seismic performance of masonry aggregates according to a simplified approach. The proposed procedure faces the challenge of using few mechanical and geometrical parameters of individual buildings belonging to an existing masonry aggregate as the input of a proper vulnerability algorithm based on the direct interaction between the programming software MATLAB and the structural analysis and design software POR2000. In this way, all possible combinations of the input parameters can be taken into account and a large set of numerical models is generated and analysed by nonlinear static analyses. The output of the procedure is represented by the bilinear capacity curves of the equivalent single degree of freedom models and by the values of the capacity/demand ratios. The entire approach has been firstly accurately defined and after applied on the pilot case study of the historical centre of the municipality of Foggia, Puglia, Southern Italy. The main advantage that META-FORMA offers is the possibility to generate a wide mechanical/typological-based database, which provides a direct and simplified estimate of the seismic behaviour of masonry aggregates by knowing only few parameters, being at the same time simple and time-saving. The paper presents a machine-learning based framework, named VULMA (VULnerability analysis using MAchine-learning), for vulnerability analysis of existing buildings. The underlying idea is to provide an indication of the seismic vulnerability by exploiting available photographs, which can be properly processed to provide some input data for empirical vulnerability algorithms. To this scope, a complete processing pipeline has been defined, which consists in four consecutive modules offering different and specific services. The first module, Street VULMA , performs the image gathering starting from the raw data; the second module, Data VULMA , provides a mean for the data labelling and storage; the third module, Bi VULMA , uses the collected data to train several machine-learning models for image classification; the fourth module, In VULMA , performs a ranking of the images, their analysis and consequently assigns the vulnerability index. The proposed procedure has been employed on the existing building portfolio in an extended area of the municipality of Bisceglie, Puglia, Southern Italy, for which all the modules have been tested and, above all, the machine-learning models of Bi VULMA have been trained. After, in order to test the efficiency and the reliability of the proposed tools, the entire procedure has been applied on five case study buildings. The results in terms of vulnerability index have been compared with the manual computations performed by the authors applying the same algorithm. • Weather files defined with different methodology and dataset are compared. • Projections of climate changes are considered in the construction of weather files. • The case study is a residential building in a cooling dominated climate. • The composition of weather files greatly influences the energy performance prevision. • Traditional efficiency measures are not resilient for the expected climate changes. The methodology, the site and the dataset as well as the emissions scenario considered in the weather file definition influence the numerical evaluation of efficiency measures resilience. With a complete statistical and critical approach, the paper analyzes the importance of these aspects by means of a residential case study simulated in Benevento, a city of south Italy. Using data monitored from 2015 to 2020, a current weather file is built with different methodologies. The comparison indicates that there is not repeatability of the year chosen as a reference for the various months and thus the resolution of the building energy balance could bring different results. Some future climate projections are also generated on medium (2050 s) and long (2080 s) term considering different emission scenarios. With long term projection, the heating degree days are reduced also of − 21% meanwhile the cooling degree days are more than double compared with the current condition. This suggests a remarked transition towards a dominant cooling climate for Benevento. Moreover, when the climate change is considered, the insulation intervention and the installation of double glazed low emissive window is not resilient because the heating energy need decreases also of −56%, but the cooling energy need increases of + 62% (2080 s). If the efficiency measures include also the cool roof and the external shadings, the cooling demand could be reduced until –33% in some scenarios (e.g. RCP 4.5-50th percentile) and increased (+31%) in some others (e.g. 2080 s). The literature on Sustainable Business Models (SBMs) has burgeoned, identifying different archetypes to capture the variety of business models applied. Little is known, however, regarding to what extent such SBMs are effectively driving sustainable performance. This paper addresses this gap by exploring how SBMs relate to sustainability performance, considering both overall sustainable performance and the balance across the three dimensions – environmental, social, and economic (integrated performance). Based on original survey data on B Corps located in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, our findings suggest that the implementation of most SBMs results in the prioritization of one sustainability dimension over the others, especially when it comes to economically-oriented SBMs. Furthermore, our study suggests that none of the SBM archetypes considered is associated with a balanced sustainable performance, that is, none of them are inherently better able to overcome tensions across the Triple Bottom Line. • We study how SBMs archetypes relate to sustainability performance (SP). • Most SBMs prioritise a triple bottom line (TBL) axes over the others. • Economically-oriented SBMs are not connected with superior SP. • No SBM archetype drives a balanced performance across TBL axes. • A means-end divide emerges. This paper considers the modernization of an existing non-commercial Pulse Duplicator in use at the Healing Research Laboratory at the University of Padova, Italy. The system reproduces human systemic circulation and it is used to test heart medical devices. The focus of this study is the full automation of a crucial system component that is the peripheral resistance manual valve that is replaced by a motorized one. First, under certain technological constraints, the problem of the automatic setting adjustment of the valve is tackled by using a Sliding Mode Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) method. This approach guarantees the system fundamental pressure drop to simulate the peripheral resistance to flow in the human systemic circulation in various system configurations and operating conditions. Then, the Sliding Mode ESC algorithm is embedded in an Arduino board driving the motorized valve. Finally, experimental tests are performed to assess the effectiveness of the motorized valve. The development of long-term structural health monitoring systems is recently receiving a growing scientific interest in the field of Civil Engineering. In the context of unsupervised learning processes, deviations of dynamic parameters from their normal conditions can allow damage detection. However, due to the fact that modal properties are highly sensitive to environmental and operational factors, it is extremely important to remove such effects in order to obtain suitable damage sensitive features. In this regard, the selection of a proper multivariate statistical data analysis method for removing environmental effects is a key issue, heavily affecting the distribution of the residuals, the control chart and therefore the damage detection. However, specific criteria guiding the optimal definition of such statistical methods are yet to be established. In order to bridge this research gap, an original methodology is proposed in the present paper, based on Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves in combination with Precision-versus-Recall (PR) curves. Specifically, ROC and PR curves are computed and compared for a variety of statistical methods for data normalization and different damage scenarios and the model selection strategy is formulated as an optimization problem. The proposed approach is exemplified by application in two case studies of continuously monitored structures: the Z24 Bridge in Switzerland and the Consoli Palace, a mediaeval masonry building in Italy. Concrete gravity dams are critical infrastructures for communities to meet the basic human needs as well as rising standards of living. Most of the existing concrete gravity dams in Italy were built before the introduction of seismic regulations. Although no concrete gravity dams have as yet suffered a catastrophic collapse during or after a seismic event, their preservation remains a key aspect for communities, also in view of that older dams may have deteriorated to a critical level. For these reasons, researchers and practitioners in dam engineering are working to improve seismic fragility, and ultimately seismic risk, assessment procedures. Since no case histories are available, numerical modelling plays an important role, even though many uncertainties can affect the models and then the estimation of the seismic fragility. This paper presents a robust hierarchical Bayesian framework for the calibration of dynamic parameters of dam numerical models based on ambient vibrations, which allows an analyst to reduce uncertainties in the seismic fragility derivation. A probabilistic predictive model of the dam modal behaviour based on the general Polynomial Chaos Expansion is adopted in order to reduce the computational burden and a numerical algorithm for the solution of the inverse problem based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo is also presented. The proposed approach is applied to an existing large concrete gravity dam in Italy, and the effect of epistemic uncertainty reduction is finally evaluated in terms of fragility curves. The economic analysis of climate change requires estimates at both aggregate and local level. Although there are numerous studies that estimate the global impact of climate change, country-level studies are still rare, particularly as far as Italy is concerned. By exploiting a panel of 110 provinces observed between 1980 and 2014, this paper investigates the impact of variation of weather variables on GDP per capita and agricultural productivity in Italy. To address issues of model uncertainty, the analysis explores to what extent these economic outcomes are affected by weather variables, linearly or non-linearly, as well as how their growth rate and levels are affected as a result. Main findings show that there is considerable model uncertainty. The most robust econometric results showing statistically significant effects of temperature for both the GDP and agricultural reaction function are from a levels specification, where temperature is included in a non-linear form while weather variables and economic outcomes enter in first differences. Recent research in Umbria, Italy, has shown that landslide susceptibility is controlled by a process called path-dependency, which describes how past landslides control the locations of future landslides. To date, landslide path-dependency has only been characterised in Italy. This raises the question of whether this process occurs in other geomorphic settings, and thus whether path-dependency should be more universally included in landslide susceptibility assessments. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to investigate and quantify landslide path dependency in the Nepal Himalaya. This is achieved by applying several path dependent metrics to three monsoon-triggered landslide inventories for the central-eastern Nepal Himalaya. These inventories were developed at two different spatial and temporal resolutions. As such, we aim not just to quantify landslide path-dependency, but also to assess whether path dependency characteristics are resolution-dependent. We find strong evidence that landslide path dependency is occurring in Nepal, with all three inventories having more overlap between past and new landslides than expected from a random distribution, and a tentative observation that the expected degree of overlap between landslides decreases with time. Finally, whilst path-dependency is observable across both of the investigated inventory resolutions, we find that the rates and magnitudes of the quantified path dependent metrics are sensitive to inventory length, study region size and the size/type of landslides mapped. Overall, our results corroborate the path-dependency observations from Italy, confirming that this process does occur in other geomorphic settings, and thus suggesting that path-dependency should be explicitly and universally considered in landslide susceptibility approaches. Abstract: Market segmentation comprises a wide range of measurement tools that are useful for the sake of supporting marketing and promotional policies also in the sector of cultural economics. This paper aims to contribute to the literature on segmenting cultural visitors by using the Bagged Clustering method, as an alternative and effective strategy to conduct cluster analysis when binary variables are used. The technique is a combination of hierarchical and partitioning methods and presents several advantages with respect to more standard techniques, such as k-means and LVQ. For this purpose, two ad hoc surveys were conducted between June and September 2011 in the two principal museums of the two provinces of the Trentino-South Tyrol region (Bolzano and Trento), Northern Italy: the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano (ÖTZI), hosting the permanent exhibition of the “Iceman” Ötzi, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporaneous Art of Trento and Rovereto (MART). The segmentation analysis was conducted separately for the two kinds of museums in order to find similarities and differences in behaviour patterns and characteristics of visitors. The analysis identified three and two cluster segments respectively for the MART and ÖTZI visitors, where two ÖTZI clusters presented similar characteristics to two out of three MART groups. Abstract: This paper presents experimental and numerical results of the first phase of a multi-phase comprehensive joint research program between University of Salerno, Italy, and the University of California, Irvine, USA, on investigating one of the major structural issues that defines the strength limit-state of pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer (PFRP) profiles. Specifically, the strength and stiffness of the web–flange junction (WFJ) of the majority of commercially-produced pultruded composite profiles. A summary of experimental results for 28 full-scale pull-out tests are presented and typical modes failure are identified. Moreover, the influence of the pull-out load distance (d) from the edge of the specimens on the failure strength of the web–flange junction has been investigated and a new definition for an “influence zone” is proposed that is found to be dependent on the loaded length, with a maximum value equal to approximately the PFRP member’s depth. This proposed zone was observed in all laboratory tests and its existence was confirmed by the results of FEM numerical analysis. 3-D finite-element models were also developed to predict the behavior of these specimens. Abstract: Landscape evolution in active mountain chains can be dominated by gravitational slope movements. This is observed in a large portion of the Reno river catchment, Apennines, Italy, where weak rocks, such as clayshales, are subject to earthflows that control hillslope morphology and supply sediments to the channel network. In this paper, we evaluate the sediment flux generated by earthflows and compare it with Holocene-averaged deposition rates to assess the contribution of mass movements to landscape evolution. Present-day hillslope sediment flux is estimated by combining measured displacement rates (72 inclinometers) and spatial attributes of earthflows and historical frequency of reactivations. Averaged sediment yield (~1.6x103 t/km2/yr) compares well with similar studies on earthflow-dominated landscapes, despite notable differences in methodology. In the study area, the connectivity between hillslopes and the stream network is well developed and no significant sediment sinks influence the sediment transport processes. We document best estimates of regional sediment fluxes and related uncertainties, based on available data. Coarse limestone fragments, present in the clayshales, are used as a natural sediment tracer to allow a comparison with sedimentation rates taking place at the mouth of the intramontane catchment. Here, available borehole logs, 14C datings and stratigraphic correlations of the alluvial fan are used to obtain an estimate of the deposition that took place during Holocene times. Taking also into account the role of solute transport, sedimentation rates are compared to earthflow sediment production rates. Results show a good agreement and demonstrate that earthflows are the primary mass wasting process in these weak rock lithologies. We document best estimates of regional sediment fluxes and related uncertainties. Present earthflow sediment production outpaces Holocene-averaged sedimentation rates by a factor of two. The gap between sediment production and deposition can be partly justified by uncertainties associated with our estimates and by time-scale differences. With this respect, the dynamic equilibrium between erosion and deposition, is likely affected by intra-Holocene oscillations at a short time scale (10 to 1ky) attributable to climate variability. Abstract: In the present paper the experimental results relative to flexural tests on out-of-plane loaded large scale panels made of laminated structural glass are presented and discussed. Glass panels are parts of the structural façade of the Fontanarossa International Airport of Catania (Italy). Panels are mounted on a rigid testing frame and loaded with an uniformly distributed lateral pressure. Two different kinds of tests were carried-out, cyclic and monotonic, able to reproduce the serviceability and the ultimate conditions of the glass panels when subjected to the coupled effects of dead load and horizontal forces, the latter reproducing the wind action. Results obtained focused the high performances of structural glasses for structural applications (structural façade) characterised by multiple and progressive failure that did not interest the bearing points neither the zone of the shell near the supports. From a theoretical point of view a simple model based on the structural behaviour of equivalent beams is proposed able to take into account of the flexural behaviour of glass panes including catenary action. The comparison between experimental, analytical and numerical results obtained with non-linear finite element analyses shows good agreement. Abstract: In Italy, railways crossing the alpine valleys are a vital means of civil and commercial communications with the rest of Europe. The geomorphologic configuration and the climatic conditions, especially in winter and spring, can cause rock fall events resulting in railway service interruptions and damage to infrastructure and, in the worst case, to people. There were rock fall events at a slope adjacent to the Domodossola–Iselle railway, most recently in 2004. This paper evaluates the stability of a mountain slope and maps rock fall hazards through the modeling of potential runout trajectories. Traditional geological, geomorphological and geo-engineering surveys were combined with data derived from digital terrestrial photogrammetry. Stereo photographic pairs of rocky outcrops in inaccessible areas were acquired from a helicopter. Data from photogrammetry, topographic measurements and laser scanning were then integrated to build a digital model of the slope, to characterize the rock mass and block geometry, and to define possible runout trajectories. The geomatic methods used have yielded oriented stereo-images, orthophotos and precise digital models of rocky wedges. Geometrical and structural characteristics of slopes, such as joint attitude, spacing and persistence, and block volumes, were also derived. The results were used together with a deterministic limit equilibrium method to evaluate slope stability. We assessed the probabilistic distribution of rock fall end points and kinetic energy along the rock falling paths and existing barriers, and created a hazard map based on the spatial distribution of trajectories, rock fall transit density and kinetic energy. Abstract: In this paper the reliability in the load predicting ability of a design approach currently used in Italy for the repair of decayed end-beams of old elements was experimentally evaluated. The evaluation was carried out by using two different epoxy resins and two different materials for the connecting rods (namely steel and CFRP), used both on new graded beams and on 70years old elements. Results evidenced that specimens failed invariably at the prosthesis side (and not at the solid wood side), and that for larger sections load values were higher than those obtained on the basis of calculations. However, the expected mechanism of collapse (i.e., pull-out of glued-in rods) was never observed in tests, except as a consequence of other failure mechanisms. In contrast, specimens evidenced the splitting of wood close to rods, which was unexpected according to the considered design approach. Several criteria were compared in order to take account of the experimental evidences, and among them, one was the best performing. Although this work evaluated an approach also based on a national document, the results achieved and the fact that similar procedures are also considered in other national codes give to the outcomes a general validity, which can be effectively applied in similar cases. Abstract: Soil sealing has been regarded as a key environmental problem since sealed soils lose several of their functions determining a reduction in land productivity and quality. Unfortunately, the analysis of changes in land-use carried out through the use of traditional data sources allows a relatively rough estimation of this phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to illustrate a procedure quantifying over time the soil sealing rate at the country scale. Italy was chosen as the study area due to its spatially-complex urbanization patterns. The procedure was based on the visual interpretation of aerial photographs and high-resolution topographic maps taken at four points in time (1956, 1994, 1999, 2006) in a random sample of field plots homogeneously distributed across the country. Results indicate that soil sealing continuously increased in Italy over the investigated period with the highest absolute and per-capita growth rate of sealed areas being observed respectively in northern and southern Italy. Abstract: SpacE Exploration and Development Systems (SEEDS) initiative originated from Politecnico di Torino and Thales Alenia Space Italy in 2005. It aimed at establishing a postgraduate international master course in space exploration and development systems to offer an opportunity to young engineers to get prepared for the future of Europe in space exploration. SEEDS project has been shared with Supaero Toulouse in France and with University of Bremen (together with the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity, ZARM) in Germany. SEEDS course comprises of two different steps in sequence: an initial learning phase and a project work phase. The distinguishing feature of SEEDS is without any doubt the project work phase, which includes the preparatory work and the conceptual design activities, performed in three European sites to develop a limited number of building blocks identified during the preparatory work. The first year of activity started in November 2005. Five years of activities have passed since then and five project works have been successfully completed, dealing with various space exploration themes. The paper focuses on the description of SEEDS master course, in terms of master course structure, applied methodology and students team organization, and on the main results achieved, in terms of project work activities and development of future space workforce. Abstract: This paper investigates optimal audit programs in an economy populated by artificial agents. The behavior of the artificial agents is calibrated using data obtained from experiments on fiscal evasion made in northern Chile (Antofagasta) and northern Italy (Trento). We identify a tax collection policy that is optimal in the sense that its outperforms the tax payments made by the calibrated agents, using any other standard collection plans used by governments. We find that the design of an optimal audit scheme depends on three components: income distribution, the identification of patterns of behaviors and the number of times individuals are audited. Abstract: The paper analyzes PM10 data from Mt. Cimone observatory (44°11′ N, 10°42′ E) in the period 1998–2011. Mt. Cimone is the highest peak of the Italian northern Apennines (2165 m asl) which hosts a high altitude background station in Southern Europe. The dataset is discussed in the framework of the main atmospheric meteorological and territorial features, representative of the central Mediterranean free troposphere. The overall geometric mean of PM10 mass concentration in the period investigated is 6.0 μg m−3 (arithmetic mean 8.8 ± 8.0 μg m−3), with large variability at the synoptic time-scale. At Mt. Cimone station the PM10 mass load features a strong seasonal fluctuation with a winter minimum (0.1 μg m−3, average winter value: 4.1 ± 4.8 μg m−3) and a summer maximum (45.7 μg m−3, average summer value: 13.7 ± 7.2 μg m−3). Influence of surface source areas upon PM10 is discussed by comparison of simultaneous PM10 data collected at ground stations to the north and south of the Northern Apennine range in order to investigate transport connections at the regional scale. PM10 data collected from the Environmental Protection Agencies networks of Emilia Romagna and Tuscany mostly cover urban stations and a few rural and semirural stations usually at ground level. In general PM10 mass load exhibits a vertical negative gradient with altitude, with Mt. Cimone displaying the least average value. Nevertheless exceptions can be observed on an event basis, while direct comparison of concentration data is not advisable due to the remoteness of Mt. Cimone as compared even to rural or semirural stations. Analysis of PM10 time series in conjunction with fine and coarse particle number densities reveals the influence of transports from source regions such as the Northern African desert, the Po valley and the European continent including the Balkan area. Abstract: Large areas of Rome (Italy) are prone to sudden ground collapse because of the degradation of a cavity network related to the long-lasting underground quarrying activity of volcanic Pleistocene deposits. In recent years, the municipality authorities have promoted scientific research in the field of engineering geology to locate these underground voids and to establish a standard methodology to assess the associated risk affecting the overlying structures. In this paper, a multidisciplinary – geophysical and geological – method oriented to cavity location is described, tested and validated. Within this investigation, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) is selected as the primary geophysical survey method. The potential for underground cavity mapping is assessed using synthetic simulations and observations at a test site where the position of underground voids is known. Consequently, the ERT diagnostic capability is quantitatively evaluated in the geological scenario of interest and possible interpretation pitfalls when interpreting resistivity anomalies in a geological sense are pointed out. On this basis, an integrated investigation program encompassing ERT measurements and borehole drilling is carried out at a site where the cavity network is unknown. The physical reconstruction offered by ERT, when supported by a detailed geological model, was found very useful in defining the geometry of the subsoil and consequently increasing the percentage of success in cavity location when compared to the one obtained by drilling alone. Two test sites are described: one is characterized by a well-known cavity network, and the other has an unknown tunnel arrangement. The corresponding geological models, resulting from in situ investigation, are discussed. When assisted by a detailed conceptual geological model, ERT is proven to be a very useful tool to detect unknown galleries and consequently to optimize the drilling investigation program. In addition to that, the extensive in-situ testing of the near-surface volcanic deposits of the Rome urban area, permitted to characterize extensively both the electrical resistivity and the seismic (P- and S-waves) velocities of these formations, whose in situ properties have never been studied to this extent in previous literature. Abstract: This paper investigates wood recruitment and deposition dynamics in a large gravel-bed, braided river (Tagliamento River, Italy). We used a combination of field measurements, automatically repeated ground images, and remotely sensed surveys to quantify wood input through bank erosion and associated downstream deposition. Two sites were investigated where floods caused the erosion of vegetated island edges. A lidar survey preceding the erosion events provided data on the morphology and vegetation structure of the eroded areas, allowing estimation of the number of trees that were uprooted. Sequences of ground-based images acquired automatically (and supported by field measurements) showed the time, number, and location of deposited trees. Results show that the complex morphology of braided rivers induces specific deposition patterns. We observed wide dispersal of wood on gravel bars, with jams characterised by a small number of logs (on average 2–3) and, in many cases, only a single log. A large proportion of the eroded trees (up to 40%) were deposited on the nearest downstream bar. This illustrates significant wood retention close to the recruitment site, with the remaining wood dispersed widely downstream. Differences in the observed level of local wood retention were associated with the proximity of the erosion site to the main channel and differences were also observed in retention between the peak and the falling limb of flood events, confirming that water depth and probably flow velocity are the crucial parameters controlling wood deposition. Abstract: A new index has been developed for the hydromorphological assessment of Italian rivers. The method was designed to comply with the EU Water Framework Directive requirements, but its use can be extended to other applications in river management. The evaluation of stream morphological quality is preceded by a phase of river segmentation, consisting of an initial division of the network into river reaches with homogeneous morphological characteristics. The evaluation procedure consists of a set of 28 indicators, which were defined to assess longitudinal and lateral continuity, channel pattern, cross section configuration, bed structure and substrate, and vegetation in the riparian corridor. These characteristics are analyzed in terms of geomorphological functionality, artificiality, and channel adjustments. Indicators, classes, and the scoring system were defined based on expert judgement. The scoring system leads to the definition of the Morphological Quality Index (MQI). Application of the method to 102 river reaches covering a wide range of physical conditions and human pressures of Italian streams enabled the testing of the overall methodology and the refinement of the indicators and scores. Abstract: This paper discusses the development and validation of passenger car emission factors, using real world operation data. In total, six passenger cars of different technologies were studied. The tested vehicles were operated under various driving conditions and over two different routes in the region of Lombardia, Italy. These routes were specifically defined in order to provide a range of driving conditions, including urban, rural and highway driving. Tailpipe emissions and exhaust gas flows were measured on-board the vehicle, using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS). In addition, all vehicles were tested over the European type-approval driving cycle (NEDC) with the same PEMS equipment. The testing of gasoline vehicles showed that emissions are well below the emission standards and do not raise any concern. However, the testing of diesel vehicles both under real-world driving conditions and over the NEDC brought to the surface important concerns regarding the actual NO x emissions of modern diesel vehicles, since they seem to comply with the corresponding emission standard over the type-approval cycle, but they constantly exceed the specified limit when tested under real-world driving conditions. Results from real-world operation revealed that there is a significant deviation from the NO x emission standard limit (especially for the newly introduced Euro 5 technology). These observations raise concerns regarding the actual NO x emissions of modern vehicles and their impact on urban air-quality. The emission factors originally measured on the road are also compared to the corresponding COPERT average speed emission factors. In general, emissions of CO2, THC and CO correlate fairly well with COPERT, for all vehicles. In the case of NO x emissions, emission levels of the two tested Euro 5 diesel passenger cars are consistently higher in urban, rural, and highway driving compared to the corresponding COPERT emission factor. Thus, leading to the conclusion that more experimental data are necessary, especially for post-Euro 4 compliant diesel vehicles of different engine capacities particularly when it comes to NO x emissions from diesel vehicles. Abstract: This paper investigates the adoption of indicators by public administrations (PAs) to communicate their environmental performance. This research on Italian municipalities registered within the Environmental Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) was conducted with the following aims: (i) to analyse the environmental performance indicators adopted in the environmental statements of Italian municipalities and (ii) to discuss the capability of these indicators to support the benchmarking process. The criterion of relevance is adopted to verify the capability of the environmental indicators used in the benchmarking process. Relevance is understood as [a] theme relevance (related to the importance of the environmental theme analysed by the indicator selected) and [b] indicator relevance for the theme (related to the representativeness of the indicator selected for the environmental theme). The research analysed the 111 Environmental Statements of all the 111 Italian municipalities registered prior to December 31, 2008. The results of the survey show that the difficulty of comparing the environmental performance of Italian EMAS-registered municipalities is a result of both a lack of relevance of the indicators to the theme and a lack of relevance of the themes analysed. Abstract: Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been successfully employed for predicting and forecasting groundwater levels up to some time steps ahead. In this paper, we present an application of feed forward neural networks (FFNs) for long period simulations of hourly groundwater levels in a coastal unconfined aquifer sited in the Lagoon of Venice, Italy. After initialising the model with groundwater elevations observed at a given time, the developed FNN should able to reproduce water level variations using only the external input variables, which have been identified as rainfall and evapotranspiration. To achieve this purpose, the models are first calibrated on a training dataset to perform 1-h ahead predictions of future groundwater levels using past observed groundwater levels and external inputs. Simulations are then produced on another data set by iteratively feeding back the predicted groundwater levels, along with real external data. The results show that the developed FNN can accurately reproduce groundwater depths of the shallow aquifer for several months. The study suggests that such network can be used as a viable alternative to physical-based models to simulate the responses of the aquifer under plausible future scenarios or to reconstruct long periods of missing observations provided past data for the influencing variables is available. Abstract: The ITER Heating Neutral Beam injectors will be implemented in three steps: development of the ion source prototype, development of the full injector prototype, and, finally, construction of up to three ITER injectors. The first two steps will be carried out in the ITER neutral beam test facility under construction in Italy. The ion source prototype, referred to as SPIDER, which is currently in the development phase, is a complex experiment involving more than 20 plant units and operating with beam-on pulses lasting up to 1h. As for control and data acquisition it requires fast and slow control (cycle time around 0.1ms and 10ms, respectively), synchronization (10ns resolution), and data acquisition for about 1000 channels (analogue and images) with sampling frequencies up to tens of MS/s, data throughput up to 200MB/s, and data storage volume of up to tens of TB/year. The paper describes the architecture of the SPIDER control and data acquisition system, discussing the SPIDER requirements and the ITER CODAC interfaces and specifications for plant system instrumentation and control. Abstract: Interpretation of channel changes is not always straightforward since it requires a detailed reconstruction of the evolutionary trajectory of channel morphology, a quantitative analysis of controlling factors and, finally, identification of links between evolutionary trajectories and controlling factors. The aim of this paper is to explain channel adjustments and controlling factors in the Tagliamento River, a large gravel-bed river in northeastern Italy. Traditional methods for studying historical channel changes (i.e., use of aerial photos, topographic data) were employed, but numerical modelling turned out to be very useful for the quantification of bedload transport and for supporting interpretation of past changes and likely future channel evolution. River channel underwent three main phases of adjustment over the last 200years. The first two phases, from the end of the nineteenth century to the early 1990s, were characterized by narrowing (channel width decreased from 1250 to 540m) and incision (about 1m); and the third phase, from the 1990s to present day, by widening (from 540 to 600m) and slight aggradation (about 0.2m). Combining evolutionary trajectories of channel morphology and analysis of controlling factors we argue that the long-term channel evolution of the Tagliamento River was driven mainly by human intervention at the reach scale (i.e., sediment mining and channelization). Changes in sediment supply in the catchment area had no, or minor, effects in the study reach. The most recent changes (i.e., widening and slight aggradation) are explained as a response to past disturbances that have produced a remarkable change of channel geometry and an increase of unit stream power in the reach. Magnitude and frequency of formative discharges are a key driving factor of the intensity of recent changes, while this was not the case during the previous phases of adjustment. Abstract: The waste crisis in Campania has inspired a vast amount of studies. Nevertheless, very little research has been done to explain the figures of waste generation and disposal in the region. The analyses carried out so far according to the indicators used by official statistics – i.e. Waste Generated, Waste Generated per capita and Separate Collection – fail to represent this hot spot case. This paper attempts to bridge this gap. Adopting the rationale of a new accounting system, the Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM), two waste indicators are proposed to complement the conventional ones: the Metabolic Rate of Waste and the Density of Waste. Then a multi-scale analysis of the Density of Waste Disposed (DWD) tests its suitability to characterise Campania’s waste patterns. The data cover the period from 1999 to 2007. The results show that the DWD complements available indicators and further helps to explain the biophysical pressure and ecological unsustainability of the waste management in the region. The multi-scale analysis shows that regional data hide a relevant territorial diversity, emergent in the provincial analysis and even more so in the municipal one. These results have implications for governance and for the debate about mono-scale versus multi-scale solutions to waste management problems. Finally, the analysis allows some analytical generalisations on the suitability of the DWD to detect situations of potential waste crisis in other study-contexts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper presents a methodology that has been developed and implemented for the simulation of electricity use (kWh) as well as electricity pricing (c€/kWh) in buildings. In the simulation, electricity pricing has been treated as dependent on electricity use as energy pricing tariffs usually discriminate between specific electricity consumption zones, time periods, etc. Pricing and electricity use, together, may then provide an estimation of the building electric energy cost (€). The simulation runs on an hourly resolution allowing to highlight some potential wasteful and costly practices in energy use and management and providing insight to user behavior, which has been a key driver for its development. The key aspects of the simulation approach are presented and its use is demonstrated in two different buildings in Greece and Italy. The methodology is now adapted to allow for neural network based, real time training, which will also be briefly introduced. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
