Abstract The global demand for bio-plastic particularly polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) have been increased in the last few decades as a substitute of petrochemical-based plastic. Utilization of waste paper, the primary constituent of municipal solid waste (MSW), as a carbon source for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production is not only an alternative, environmental friendly route of waste management but also helps to valorize the waste. In this study, hydrogen peroxide pretreated waste paper saccharification has been optimized using central composite design (CCD). The maximum hydrolysis (88.18%) occurred at paper loading 5.0 g/L, agitation 242 rpm, working volume 20%, cellulase 49.82 U/g, β-glucosidase 20.9 U/g and hemicellulase 29.5 U/g. PHB synthesis and biomass accumulation by xylose-utilizing Burkholderia sacchari using waste paper hydrolysate were studied using different nitrogen sources and carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios. Maximum PHB and dry cell weight (DCW) occurred with ammonium sulfate and a C/N ratio of 20. The highest biomass (3.63 g/L), the maximum PHB accumulation (44.2%) and the maximum reducing sugar utilization (92.1%) were observed after 48 h of cultivation using diluted hydrolysate. The physicochemical properties of the extracted PHB were compatible with the standard PHB. Hence, the waste paper could be exploited as a renewable feedstock for the sustainable production of PHB. Abstract Black liquor, an industrial waste, also generally called spent liquor is a promising feedstock for production of bio-carbon due to its high lignin and energy contents. Mild processing conditions and sustainable resource utilization can drive commercial utilization of this industrial waste. A novel oxidative procedure using hydrogen peroxide as a green liquid oxidant at room temperature for processing of paper recycling neutral sulphite semi-chemical spent liquor was established and evaluations were carried out for its efficiency. Standard hydrothermal carbonization was carried out for comparing bio-carbon production qualitatively and quantitatively using the same spent liquor. The oxidation procedure was performed at room temperature using 5% of H 2 O 2 followed by washing in diluted sulfuric acid (0.15 N) while hydrothermal carbonization was performed at 250 °C. The bio-carbon produced were similar in terms of ash percentage and ranged from 1.25 ± 0.05 to 1.48 ± 0.05% for oxidation method and from 1.11 ± 0.03 to 1.45 ± 0.04% for hydrothermal carbonization. The carbon contents for the oxidation method ranged from 60.54 to 61.50% and 66.81–67.31% for hydrothermal carbonization while higher heating values ranged from 25.32 to 26.11 MJ/kg and from 28.68 to 29.34 MJ/kg respectively. The mass yield ranged from 29.98 to 31.88% by the oxidation, while it was 15.02–16.08% by hydrothermal carbonization. Abstract Papermaking enterprises are currently under both environmental pressure and economic pressure for sustainable development in China. Thus, the efficiency, effectiveness, and benefits of resource utilization need to be improved. High-consumption and high-pollution companies should manufacture paper using sustainable methods. This study highlights a resource value flow analysis from the circular economy perspective, developing an extension of material flow cost accounting and modifying it by accounting for environmental damage as well as economic benefits. With reference to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, this specific case study was conducted to verify the comprehensive utility of resource value flow analysis by establishing decision-making prioritization according to the dualistic diagnosis of "internal resource loss–external environmental damage costs." In general, applying a resource value flow analysis can both reduce resource consumption and minimize environmental damage, enhancing the sustainable development of a process industry with limited resources. Abstract This article details a correlation study on early devolatilization behaviors (drying & volatile emission at 25–240 °C) and the change in mechanical properties (expressed by viscoelasticity) of four types of waste papers. The early stage of devolatilization was investigated using the TG-FTIR and mechanical properties using the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) method. The results show that the elastic and viscous mechanical properties showed obvious correlations with free and bound water evaporation and volatile emission. The storage modulus (E ′) and loss modulus (E ″) of the papers decreased as temperature increased and at the two important temperatures, namely 100 °C, the start of bound water evaporation, and 150 °C, the start of devolatilization in TG & DTG curves, E ′ showed extrema. Especially the relative storage modulus ( E ′ r) exhibited a sudden decrease at around 150 °C, where the activation energy of thermochemical conversion jumps from low values to high values, indicating the start of devolatilization. CO 2 is the major compound of the volatiles and it is well correlated with E ′ r in exponential function model and can be used as an index for predicting the E ′ r of the waste papers in their early devolatilization stage; while during the drying stage, mass loss ratio can be used to predict E ′ r of the waste papers. Abstract The present study demonstrates the vermistabilization of paper mill wastewater sludge (PMS) spiked with cow dung (CD) employing indigenous epigeic earthworm Perionyx excavatus Perrier. A total of six treatments were prepared along with a positive control (PC) and negative control (NC). Twenty earthworms were released into each treatment including PC and NC without earthworms. The different proportions viz., T1 (CD – 100%), T2 (PMS:CD – 1:3), T3 (PMS:CD – 1:2), T4 (PMS:CD – 1:1), T5 (PMS:CD – 3:1), T6 (PMS:CD – 2:1), PC (PMS – 100%) and NC (PMS – 100%) and changes in chemical parameters and microbial properties were recorded during the course of 60 days. Vermistabilization caused a significant decrease in the level of heavy metals: Cd (2.9–27.8%), Cu (0.22–42.3%), Pb (1.3–56.3%) and Cr (0.8–46.2%). The bioconcentration factor (BCFs) was also calculated and great amount of heavy metals accumulated in their body (mg kg−1) that ranged from 0.31 ± 0.003–0.45 ± 0.007 for Cd, 0.12 ± 0.005–0.24 ± 0.003 for Cu, 0.15 ± 0.005–0.31 ± 0.006 for Pb and 0.29 ± 0.007–0.56 ± 0.001 mg kg−1 for Cr, accumulation of heavy metals are in the order: Cr > Cd > Pb > Cu. The physicochemical parameters of earthworm treated substrate such as electrical conductivity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and total potassium were significantly increased; whereas, pH, total organic carbon, C:N ratio (carbon: nitrogen) and C:P ratio (carbon: phosphorus) were reduced after 60 days of vermistabilization. The vermistabilized materials also had a higher population of bacteria (98.90 ± 0.30 CFU × 106 g−1), fungi (43.75 ± 0.55 CFU × 103 g−1) and actinomycetes (67.65 ± 0.45 CFU × 105 g−1) than initial mixtures. Moreover, several histopathological changes were observed in earthworm tissues viz., disintegration of cells, irregular surface of epidermis, cellular debris, irregular cellular compartmentation, and oval-shaped nucleus. Higher level of histopathological abnormalities was recorded in PC (PMS-100%) while none were detected in lower concentrations of PMS. Furthermore, the study concludes that the paper mill sludge in a mixture of cow dung (1:1 ratio) can be a useful proposition for utilizing this hazardous waste through the adoption of vermitechnology. In this study, Moringa oleifera ( M. oleifera ) performance as an eco-friendly coagulant in the enhanced primary treatment of paper mill effluent was investigated. Its performance in terms of turbidity removal and COD abatement was examined. Local M. oleifera seed powder from ADRAR-city, South of Algeria, was used. Conventional jar tests were conducted for enhancing the primary treatment of paper mill effluent from paper factory. For this reason, comparative coagulation tests were performed using aluminum sulfate (alum). Indeed, in terms of turbidity abatement, 96.02% and 97.1% were obtained for Moringa and alum, respectively. However, in the case of COD abatement, the abatement rate of M. oleifera seeds was slightly higher than that of alum, 97.28% and 92.67%, respectively. Because M. oleifera is a natural resource that is locally available, an eco-friendly coagulant, non-toxic, and biodegradable and does not affect the pH of water; thus, its use allows to avoid numerous disadvantages of conventional coagulants like alum. High pressure laminate has a key role at the protection of wood-based panels. Borax and recycled papers can be used for production of high pressure laminate which may impart the multitude effects. The readily availability of waste papers and borax may be a useful alternative to expensive papers with high quality, and also can compensate the strength losses of recycled papers. The recycled paper and borax are relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly, and this results the production of not only a cleaner product but also provides an excellent performance against applied load, humidity and high temperature. In this study, three types of waste papers including newsprint, writing and paperboard were first recycled to be used for production of high pressure laminate. Phenol formaldehyde and borax were utilized to improve the strength and fire retardancy of high pressure laminate. Bending resistance, flame resistance and water absorption of high pressure laminate samples were tested. The results of the experiments showed that high pressure laminate made of recycled newspaper and borax had a superior performance when compared to samples that made from writing paper and paperboard. For example, an increase up to 1.4 times was observed in the bending resistance. The mixing of borax with resin increased the strength of high pressure laminate at 95 percent confidence level. The amount of water absorption after 2 h, bending resistance, glowing time and char length of high pressure laminate with recycled newspaper and borax were equal to 14%, 41 mNm, 37 s and 0.7 cm, respectively. The bending strength of coated particleboard with this overlay increased up to 1.5 times. The aim of this study was to determine the cause of foxing on 19th century paper using omics methods, including metagenomics via high-throughput sequencing on the Illumina platform and metabolomics via high-resolution surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SALDI-ToF-MS) imaging using the gold nanoparticle-enhanced target (AuNPET) method. Metabolomic analysis as well as ninhydrin and amido black staining of paper samples showed the presence of proteinaceous substances in areas corresponding to foxing. Products of cellulose biodegradation and microbial metabolites, including yellow-coloured pigments (2-methyl-6-phytylquinol; delta-, gamma- and beta-tocopherols; 3-hydroxy-L-kynurenine) were detected. No difference in metal-ion content was seen between areas with and without foxing. Higher degrees of biodiversity were identified within foxing stains compared to foxing-free areas. Phoma sp. and Cladonia sp. moulds and Gluconobacter and Ralstonia bacteria were predominant in DNA samples obtained from foxing stains. The presence of these microbes has never previously been linked to the phenomenon of foxing. These studies indicate that foxing is a result of a combined effect of microbial action, paper-degradation by microbes, dye production, and chemical changes occurring in paper due to oxidation of cellulose metabolites. The use of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) for aiding medical diagnosis is a growing trend in the literature mainly due to their low cost, easy use, simple manufacturing, and great potential for application in low-resource settings. Many important biomarkers (proteins, ions, lipids, hormones, DNA, RNA, drugs, whole cells, and more) and biofluids are available for precise detection and diagnosis. We have reviewed the advances μPADs in medical diagnostics have achieved in the last few years, focusing on the most common human biofluids (whole blood/plasma, sweat, urine, tears, and saliva). The challenges of detecting specific biomarkers in each sample are discussed, along with innovative techniques that overcome such limitations. Finally, the difficulties of commercializing μPADs are considered, and future trends are presented, including wearable devices and integrating multiple steps in a single platform. • μPADs can be applied for simple and low-cost diagnosis in low-resource settings. • The challenges of applying μPADs to human biofluids are analyzed. • Recent advancements to overcome specific drawbacks for each fluid are discussed. • Difficulties in commercializing μPADs and future tendencies are presented. Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) represent a spectrum of malignancies associated with a dismal prognosis. Recent genomic profiling studies have provided a deeper understanding of the complex and heterogenous molecular landscape of BTCs, identifying several actionable genetic alterations, and expanding treatment options. Due to the high number and complexity of genetic alterations which require testing, next-generation sequencing (NGS) is currently the preferred approach over conventional methods (i.e., immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in-situ hybridization and PCR) for molecular profiling of BTCs and should be performed upfront in all BTC patients. However, BTC sampling often yields low tumor cellularity tissue, hampering NGS analysis. Future perspectives to overcome this obstacle include liquid biopsy and optimization of biopsy protocols. In this position paper, the authors discuss the current histopathologic, molecular, and therapeutic landscape of BTCs, provide a critical overview of the available testing methods for molecular diagnostics, and propose a practical diagnostic algorithm for molecular testing of BTC samples. For the first time, functionalized GQDs were synthesized and stabilized on the surface of hydrophobic fiber-glass with simple manufacturing and assembly strategy towards colorimetric chemosensing of ions including iron, copper, cobalt, mercury, chrome, manganese, and nickel. For this purpose, GQDs are functionalized by various organic species including cysteamine, decanethiol, and mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) towards specific electrostatic interaction with metal ions of Fe (II), Cu (II), Co(II), Hg (II), Mn (II), and Ni (II). Therefore, an innovative GQDs-based miniaturized chemo-system was proposed for the environmental analysis. Additionally, the results were confirmed using fluorescence spectrometry as an optical detection method. Finally, this simple and efficient colorimetric platform was used for facile metal ions detection in human urine models, and environmental fluids, which can provide a commercial device for sensing contaminants by non-professional users in biomedical/environmental mixture. As an economical technique, this platform presents a "mix-and-sense" system without dye (as a side substance) or chemical treatments. A label-free detection method for noninvasive biofluids enables rapid on-site disease screening and early-stage cancer diagnosis by analyzing metabolic alterations. Herein, we develop three-dimensional plasmonic hexaplex nanostructures coated on a paper substrate (3D-PHP). This flexible and highly absorptive 3D-PHP sensor is integrated with commercial saliva collection tube to create an efficient on-site sensing platform for lung cancer screening via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurement of human saliva. The multispike hexaplex-shaped gold nanostructure enhances contact with saliva viscosity, enabling effective sampling and SERS enhancement. Through testing patient salivary samples, the 3D-PHP sensor demonstrates successful lung cancer detection and diagnosis. A logistic regression-based machine learning model successfully classifies benign and malignant patients, exhibiting high clinical sensitivity and specificity. Additionally, important Raman peak positions related to different lung cancer stages are investigated, suggesting insights for early-stage cancer diagnosis. Integrating 3D-PHP senor with the conventional saliva collection tube platform is expected to offer promising practicality for rapid on-site disease screening and diagnosis, and significant advancements in cancer detection and patient care. Vermicomposting of paper mill sludge (PMS) with cowdung (CD) and green manure plants, Tephrosia purpurea (TEP) and Gliricidia sepium (GLS) in different combinations (21 days pre-decomposed) was carried out using Eisenia fetida (60 days). Results revealed that electrical conductivity, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium and N NO 3 - levels were higher in vermicomposts generated from PMS + CD with TEP/GLS combination than in composts prepared without earthworms; while total organic carbon, C/N ratio, C/P ratio and organic matter content depicted significant reduction. C/N and C/P of final vermicompost ranged from 13.45 to 22.33 and 15.54 to 28.56 respectively. The total microbial population was significantly higher in CD + TEP/GLS vermicomposts (P < 0.001). Activities of dehydrogenase, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatases during vermicomposting elevated initially and then declined, indicating vermicompost maturity. Also, the seed germination tests with maize and cowpea in vermicomposts of PMS, CD and green manure combination support the maturity and less phytotoxic nature of vermicompost produced. Growth and reproduction of E. fetida explained that the addition of CD along with GLS/TEP significantly created an impact on bioconversion of PMS. The PMS + CD + TEP/GLS (2:1:1 ratio) combination can be used for sustainable PMS utilization through vermicomposting, and enriched vermicompost can also be obtained by the addition of green manure plants. Adsorption separation and photocatalytic techniques have emerged as effective methods to eliminate organic dyes from water environment, but the poor recycling of most powdered adsorbents and photocatalysts in aqueous solutions hinders their commercial viability. Herein, we propose an effective and reusable dye-elimination module through the bottom-up self-assembly of photocatalyst (TiO 2 nanoparticles) and adsorbent (Al-fumarate) on a corrugated paper (CP) support. Results show that the hydrophilic and electrostatic interactions between the components ensure the integrity of the whole module in aqueous phase dyes, thereby ensuring its practicality and cyclic stability (10 times). Al-fumarate with a superior specific surface area of (1117.82 m2/g) and porosity (0.47 cm3/g) on the substrate serves to induce and capture the dye molecules, while TiO2 nanoparticles with a wide bandgap trigger a redox reaction to further degrade the organic pollutants. Through the synergistic effect between adsorption and photocatalytic strategies, the resultant functional CP-based composite exhibits superior dye-removal performance than other potential composite materials, reaching 98.93% degradation efficiency of congo red (CR) solution (25 mg/L), and 97.91% elimination capacity of methylene blue (MB) solution (20 mg/L). Thermophilic methane fermentation was a valid approach for handling the stillage eluted from ethanol fermentation of waste paper and kitchen waste. The wide organic loading rate (OLR) range (2–14 g VTS/(L d)) for stable performance and relatively high energy recovery efficiency (79.0%) were achieved, and OLR of 8 g VTS/(L d) was optimum for achievement of highest biogas evolution and VTS removal efficiency. However, its practical application is limited by the viable 2e-WOR catalysts that can ensure high selectivity and high H 2 O 2 yield. In this paper, a highly active 2e-WOR electrocatalyst was prepared by modifying carbon fiber paper (CFP) with a self-assembled membrane (SAMs). The SAMs modified CFP can achieve an H 2 O 2 yield of 79.8 μmol min−1 cm−2 and an H 2 O 2 selectivity of 82.5% at a low potential (2.1 V vs. RHE). The DFT calculation reveals that SAMs modification can modulate the *OH binding energy of the active site on CFP, thus leading to a significantly improved selectivity and production rate of H 2 O 2. Moreover, the 2e-WOR performance is found to be independent of the functional tail groups of SAMs because the electron transfer during the 2e-WOR occurs through direct electron transfer via the carbon atoms adjacent to the O=C-M on carbon fiber rather than the well-known electron tunneling through SAMs. This study provides a new strategy for surface modification of 2e-WOR carbon-based catalysts and opens a new way for efficient electrosynthesis of H 2 O 2. Collection, as the first stage of the recycling process, and pre-processing to increase waste stream purity constitute key operations for achieving high recycling rates and a closed loop in the circular economy. For wastepaper recycling in Hong Kong, it is the semi-formal-informal recycling (SFIR) sector that plays a central role in both stages. This study analyses the so far little explored SFIR stakeholder network in Hong Kong and sheds light on value chains, recovered waste paper quantities and the impact of policies on the sector. The findings show that SFIR stakeholders reclaim 55.6 t/recycling station/month of wastepaper and thereby achieve about a 5.7 times higher reclaim rate than the formal-private recycling system. Critical to this achievement is the SFIR transaction network, which enables its stakeholders to develop a value chain and thereby generate an added value of around 1900 HKD (243.9 USD/t) for wastepaper. Given limited circular structures in Hong Kong, financial subsidies are critical to sustain the SFIR's operations over the short-term. However, over the long-term legalization and integration of its stakeholders are necessary to ensure an economically and socially sustainable wastepaper recovery system in Hong Kong. Developing separation materials for rapidly oil absorption and emulsions separation is urgently needed and remains a great challenge. Here, a biomass-derived banana peel/waste paper (BPWP) hybrid aerogel with hierarchical porous structure has been successfully fabricated via combination of freezing-cast, freeze-drying and pyrolysis approach, for application in oil adsorption and water-in-oil emulsions separation. In this hybrid system, the microsheets that derived from banana peel immobilize were immobilized on surface of the waste paper fibers, forming a hierarchical structure. The resulting BPWP aerogels exhibit a compression strain of 75%, high-hydrophobicity (WCA of 149.3°)/underair superoleophilicity (OCA of 0°), and high porosity, which can absorb of free oils in water with high oil sorption capacity of 35–115 times its own weight. Moreover, these aerogels effectively separate various surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions driven solely by gravity, with high separation efficiency above 99.6% and higher fluxes of up to 8550 L m −2 h −1 than traditional filtration membranes with pressure driven, even the sizes of emulsified droplets are smaller than the pore size of the BPWP aerogels. More importantly, the BPWP aerogels exhibit a superior antifouling property and regenerability for emulsion separation, which match well with the requirements for treating the real emulsions. Due to the advantages of banana peel/waste paper aerogels in rich source and high oil separation efficiency, the obtained banana peel/waste paper aerogel can be a potential candidate in industrial applications and environmental protection. This work opens up a new avenue for design new hierarchical biomass-derived aerogels for a variety of applications including energy storage, sensors and pressure-sensitive electronics. Butyl levulinate (BL) represents a novel diesel bio-blendstock and a versatile intermediate and solvent. The one-pot acid-catalyzed conversion of C6-feedstocks, employing n -butanol as the solvent/reagent, implies the upgrading of low-cost or, even better, waste biomasses for developing prompt process intensification. In this paper, the one-pot butanolysis process has been studied, moving from model glucose and microcrystalline cellulose to a waste cellulose feedstock deriving from a real papermaking process. The performances obtained with this waste biomass have been optimized, achieving BL yields up to 46 mol %, adopting a high-gravity approach, in the presence of diluted sulfuric acid as the catalyst. The optimization was carried out also in the perspective of minimizing the alcohol etherification to dibutyl ether, and the feedstock carbonization to char by-product, whose characterization was performed to identify its suitable applications. The combined production of both BL as a valuable bio-fuel and char as an exploitable carbonaceous bio-material can pave the way to the development of the one-pot butanolysis of real cellulosic or lignocellulosic biomasses in an environmentally sustainable and integrated perspective, in agreement with the principles of the circular bio-economy. Guiding industries to produce in an effective and environmentally sustainable manner has become a key issue for governments around the world. Over the past 15 years, series of regional and industrial development policies have been introduced by the Chinese government. This has influenced the geographical distribution and energy efficiency performance of China’s industries. This paper quantifies the influence of enterprises geographical distribution on energy efficiency improvement in the paper industry and aims at providing some helpful suggestions on industrial development to policy makers. The main results show that, firstly, the paper industry in eastern China shows obvious characteristic of agglomeration. The average location quotient is 1.2278. However, following the industrial and regional development policies, the characteristic of agglomeration is weakening. Secondly, only when agglomeration reaches a certain level (location quotient is above 0.5447) will industrial agglomeration positively impact on industrial energy efficiency improvement (a 1% increase in agglomeration will increase dynamic energy efficiency by at least 0.23%). Thirdly, the regional development policies carried out by the government slow the pace of energy efficiency improvement in China’s paper industry. An analytical method based on the combination of on-line pyrolysis-comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and multivariate analysis for a direct characterization of traditional East Asian handmade papers is presented here. The method was applied to three kinds of widely used handmade papers in East Asia followed by an attempt of identification of ancient lining papers belonging to museum samples of unknown origin. The results indicated that Py-GCxGC/MS, together with multivariate data analysis, was more efficient and reliable compared to the compound presence/absence analysis to meet the challenging search for organic markers in rare cultural heritage materials. The established method showed promises as an efficient analytical tool for the characterization of artwork and culture heritage materials and in filling the lacuna for papermaking fiber analysis which is currently almost entirely relied on microscopy analysis. Results also revealed that two-dimensional techniques could constitute an efficient approach for the analysis of complex artwork samples to circumvent the limitation of materials at disposal in cultural heritage studies. Waste incineration is an effective solid waste disposal method; however, its by-product pollutants hinder its widespread adoption. This research aims to develop novel unglazed ceramic tiles by recycling industrial solid waste incineration fly ash (IWA) from recycled paper mills. Experimental investigations were conducted on ceramic tiles with IWA additions (0–30 wt%) and firing temperatures (1100 °C, 1200 °C, and 1300 °C). Various scientific tests, including XRF, XRD, strength, water absorption, thermal properties, heavy metal leaching, SEM analysis, and micro-CT analysis, were performed. The results suggest that the addition of IWA may deteriorate the technical performance of ceramic tiles; however, satisfactory performance can still be achieved by tailoring the firing temperature due to the existence of iron and calcium in the IWA, which narrows and displaces the densification temperature range. Remarkably, tiles with 30 wt% IWA, which completely replaced the flux materials and fired at 1300 °C, achieved the highest flexural strength (exceeding 30 MPa). These tiles exhibited promising attributes such as water absorption of 5.9%, an estimated energy saving of 33.86%, and compliance with heavy metal leaching limits. This study proposes a sustainable solution for IWA disposal by utilising recycled paper mill fly ash as a substitute for flux material in ceramic tile manufacturing. In this work, a robust and flexible bilayered MXene/cellulose paper sheet with superhigh electrical conductivity was prepared via vacuum-assisted filtration and a subsequent hot-pressing process for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. By tightly assembling few-layered MXene (f-Ti 3 C 2 T x) on the cellulose substrate via hydrogen bonds, an effective and interconnected conductive network was constructed in the paper sheet, resulting in a high electrical conductivity of 774.6–5935.4 S m−1 at various f-Ti 3 C 2 T x loadings. The highly conductive MXene layer can promptly reflect a great amount of incident EM waves, a process which preceded the transmission of EM waves in the cellulose matrix. Owing to the highly efficient reflection-dominated EMI shielding mechanism, the resultant bilayered MXene/cellulose paper sheets exhibit excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of 34.9–60.1 dB and specific EMI shielding efficiency of 290.6–600.7 dB mm−1. Moreover, the MXene/cellulose paper sheets demonstrated improved mechanical strength (up to 25.7 MPa) and flexibility due to the mechanical frame effect acted by the cellulose substrate. The paper describes the structure and properties of preceramic paper-derived Ti 3 Al(Si)C 2 -based composites fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The effect of sintering temperature and pressure on microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites was studied. The microstructure and phase composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. It was found that at 1150 °C the sintering of materials with the MAX-phase content above 84 vol% leads to nearly dense composites. The partial decomposition of the Ti 3 Al(Si)C 2 phase becomes stronger with the temperature increase from 1150 to 1350 °C. In this case, composite materials with more than 20 vol% of TiC were obtained. The paper-derived Ti 3 Al(Si)C 2 -based composites with the flexural strength > 900 MPa and fracture toughness of >5 MPa m1/2 were sintered at 1150 °C. The high values of flexural strength were attributed to fine microstructure and strengthening effect by secondary TiC and Al 2 O 3 phases. The flexural strength and fracture toughness decrease with increase of the sintering temperature that is caused by phase composition and porosity of the composites. The hardness of composites increases from ~9.7 GPa (at 1150 °C) to ~11.2 GPa (at 1350 °C) due to higher content of TiC and Al 2 O 3 phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The need to view innovation policy through the lens of policy mixes has gained momentum given the growing complexity, the dynamics of real-world policy and the wide array of difficulties to address the current great societal challenges, notably the increasing pressure on the ecosystems that support our society. One of the main challenges concerning the transition towards bioeconomy, is to gain a more in-depth understanding on the policy mix to stimulate innovation in sustainability transitions. Our paper aims at enriching the portfolio of empirical case studies on policy mixes for innovation and sustainable transitions, by investigating the development of the policy mix underpinning the sustainability transition of the pulp and paper industry in Sweden. We apply a case study approach which draws on event history analysis, semi-structured interviews with industry and policy makers, literature reviews, a participative workshop with stakeholders from the pulp and paper industry, as well as on the IEA databases on climate change and energy efficiency policies and measures. Our analysis emphasises coordination, timing and scale in policy mixes as important elements to understand how instruments interact to accelerate sustainability transitions. The mapping of the policy mix shows that destabilising policies were crucial for accelerating the transition process of the industry. Prior to novelty creation policies, destabilising policies (e.g. environmental policies) were needed for 'innovation policy instruments' to be effective. More specific instruments (e.g. carbon tax), targeting particular functions of the innovation systems, require 'on-the-ground' policy intelligence and benefit from close interaction with industry. Paper products are carbon-intensive and having a huge potential for carbon reduction due to their biomass-oriented characteristics. A uniform standard for total carbon footprint (CF) accounting is vital. However, the existing standards have not yet been unified. Inconsistencies between standards cause difficulties in their use and significantly weaken the credibility and comparability of the carbon footprint of a product (CFP). This work rethought the three most widely used standards (Publicly Available Specification 2050 (PAS2050), Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard (GHG Protocol), and Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard (ISO14067)) from the life-cycle perspective, and established a more appropriate and comprehensive CF accounting standard for paper products (CFASPP). Sanitary pads were selected as a case study to illustrate the discrepancies between PAS 2050, the GHG Protocol, ISO 14067, and CFASPP, for which the annual production CF results were 1424.60, 1481.08, 1453.57, and 1427.04 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2 e) respectively. The main reasons for the different CF results were the cut-off criteria and the inclusion or exclusion of carbon storage, delayed emissions, and energy recovery. Each element increased or decreased 22.57 (carbon storage), 29.96 (cut-off criteria), 10.4 (delayed emissions), and 27.52 (incineration with energy recovery) tons of CO 2 e in the results. With increasing demand, these discrepancies will become increasingly significant and may lead to corporations shouldering more or less carbon emission responsibilities by selecting different standards, which will challenge the fairness of product carbon neutrality management. CFASPP covers all paper product life-cycle stages and places greater emphasis on the aspects of carbon storage, delayed emissions, and energy recovery in incineration, which cannot be ignored for the CF accounting of paper products and other biomass-oriented products. This study aims to provide a more applicable and comprehensive guide for corporations to evaluate the CF of paper products, and to provide a reference for the construction of a carbon-neutral evaluation system. Paper recommendation based on author preferences has gained widespread attention. Current methods focus on the heterogeneous information network (HIN) to infer correlation clues based on the metapath with single-type association (closed-metapath). However, the closed-metapath approach only considers sparse correlations between a few type nodes, which brings great challenges for preference learning. To address this issue, we propose a novel metapath with multiple-type correlations (open-metapath) approach for paper recommendation to capture rich correlations between various type nodes in HIN. First, the academic heterogeneous information network is transformed into open-metapaths to acquire whole semantic correlations among varying type nodes, enriching sparse associations. Then, neighbor attention is designed to explore highly relevant structural and semantic information, which initializes author preferences and paper features. Next, metapath attention is constructed to measure the impact intensity of open-metapaths and distinguish their representations. Finally, static and interactive features are fused to learn vectors of authors and papers, providing desired papers. Complicated manufacture of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) paper limits its wider application. In this study, the facile gelation process was proposed to fabricate PPTA paper by injecting spontaneous-gelling low molecular weight PPTA (LMW-PPTA) solution onto the surface of non-woven PPTA fabric composed of chopped PPTA fibers. Subsequently, the PPTA papers and hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) doped PPTA paper were eventually obtained by gelation, washing and pressing. The mechanical properties, electric insulation property and hydrophobicity of PPTA papers were apparently affected by the ratio of chopped PPTA fibers to LMW-PPTA polymers and the content of PVDF in the paper. Significantly, the facile-process and low-cost composite PPTA papers were proved with high tear strength, preeminent dielectric breakdown strength, great thermal stability and superior hydrophobicity, which shed light on a promising direction for developing high-performance insulating materials and honeycomb materials. Peer review is a widely accepted mechanism for research evaluation, playing a pivotal role in academic publishing. However, criticisms have long been leveled at this mechanism, mostly because of its poor efficiency and low reproducibility. Recent years have seen the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in assisting the peer review process. Nonetheless, with the involvement of humans, such limitations remain inevitable. In this paper, we propose the concept and pipeline of automated scholarly paper review (ASPR) and review the relevant literature and technologies of achieving a full-scale computerized review process. On the basis of the review and discussion, we conclude that there is already corresponding research and preliminary implementation at each stage of ASPR. We further look into the challenges in ASPR with the existing technologies. The major difficulties lie in inadequate data, imperfect document parsing and representation, defective human–computer interaction, and flawed deep logical reasoning. Moreover, we point out the future directions and discuss the possible moral and ethical issues of ASPR. The development of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts with high electrocatalytic performance and stability by adopting a scalable route is key to solving the energy crisis. We report a P Ni co-doped Mo 2 C-based electrocatalyst with high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity prepared by a molten-salt method. Using phosphating times of 2 h and 4 h yielded P-Ni-Mo 2 C-2h and P-Ni-Mo 2 C-4h, respectively, both of which exhibited nanoflower-like structures that provided abundant active sites for the reaction. P-Ni-Mo 2 C-2h possessed good electrocatalytic properties with a low overpotential of only 140.5 mV at j = 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 50.7 mV dec−1 in an alkaline environment. P-Ni-Mo 2 C-2h exhibited excellent stability after 20 h of continuous hydrogen production. The use of an excessively long phosphating time caused a narrow down of spaces formed by nanoflakes, thereby reducing the HER performance of the electrocatalyst. The binding stoichiometry of PZ-PY-CN- was confirmed by Job's plot, B-H studies, 1H NMR titration, TD-DFT, and ESI-mass spectroscopy. The relatively low limit of detection was determined to be 8.79 × 10 -8 M in a linear range between 0 and 120 µL. PZ-PY receptor exhibits an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) nature with the increase in water fraction; it is stable between pH 2 to 11. Pyrolysis characteristics of Tetra Pak, a paperboard-polyethylene-aluminium foil, were investigated in this study with a focus on the synergistic effect between its individual components. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that molten LDPE coating on cellulose surface led to suppression on mass and heat transfer and the increased activation energy of pyrolysis reaction. Samples of individual components and simulated Tetra Pak packaging were pyrolyzed in a thermogravimetric analyzer at various heating rates. Synergistic effect between cellulose and LDPE on E a and the formation of characteristic products are investigated: Kinetic analysis showed that the cellulose decomposition peak in the simulated mixture exhibited a higher E a than that of pure cellulose at each conversion rate. For LDPE, the free radicals formed from cellulose pyrolysis enhanced the degradation of plastic polymers, resulting that E a of its decomposition peak in the mixture being lower in comparison to pure LDPE, with a discrepancy of around 16–27 kJ·mol−1. The formation of characteristic products including levoglucosan, furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and alkanes from pyrolysis of cellulose and LDPE mixture with different mass ratios was further investigated in a micro-pyrolyzer. The results suggested that synergistic effects and physical barrier existed during fast pyrolysis between cellulose and LDPE. The aim of this study was the valorization of paper sludge waste from paper industry in designing one-part geopolymer cement using ground granulated blast furnace slag as main precursor. The effects of increasing the amount of paper sludge pretreated with a constant amount of sodium hydroxide (2% of slag) on mechanical strength, heat evolution, setting time and durability were analyzed. The reaction products were characterized using X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The findings showed that paper sludge can successfully be used as a secondary source of calcium carbonate in the one-part (“just add water”) geopolymer. The compressive strength of the cured geopolymer increased with increasing the amount of paper sludge, and the non-reacted sludge acted as a filler. The maximum strength (42 MPa, 28 d) was reached at 18 wt-% paper sludge addition. The main reaction products were calcium aluminate silicate hydrate and hydrotalcite-like cementitious gels. From the perspective of its blast-furnace slag content, strength properties, water absorption and setting time, the one-part geopolymer cement could be classified as a CEM IIIC and Type 32.5N class cement under the European standard EN-197. Here, we report a facile metal-ion-modification (MIM) route, swelling with aqueous metal ion solutions, and drying to convert conventional hydrophilic paper and wood pulp into biodegradable hydrophobic paper and tableware without the addition of hydrophobic sizing chemicals/materials. Metal ions such as Fe3+ and Zr4+ can coordinate with pulp fibers' polar groups (i.e., OH, C O, and COOH) that induce self-assembly of their surface fibrillated "hairy" cellulose nanofibrils to form a more compact structure with fewer available OH groups for water sorption. This decreases the surface energy of pulp fibers and increases their hydrophobicity and water resistance. Only ∼3 mg of metal ions is needed to induce the wettability transition in 1 g of kraft pulp, resulting in hydrophobic paper and tableware with water contact angles (WCAs) of 120–140°. The coordinated Fe3+ and Zr4+ are stable, with negligible metal leaching during use, allowing the hydrophobic paper and tableware to be used for food packaging. This MIM technique can be integrated into the existing paper-making process for the scalable production of hydrophobic papers and tableware, providing an alternative route for developing sustainable and biodegradable plastic counterparts. Paper mill sludge generated from the pulp and papermaking industries has inherent iron and carbon contents. Herein, the biochar derived from paper mill sludge (PSBC) was synthesized via simple pyrolysis processes and applied as an efficient persulfate (PDS) activator for the removal of Bisphenol A (BPA) in water. The unique properties of PSBC endowed it with multiple active sites including Fe(II) species, oxygen vacancy, C O, and graphite sp2-C with defects, owing to which, the PSBC/PDS process presented satisfactory performance with BPA removal efficiency up to 98 % within 60 min. Both of the radical and non-radical pathways were revealed to be involved in the BPA degradation. Based on the results of theoretical calculation, the existences of some special structures in PSBC effectively facilitated the electron transfer process of PDS activation. The process also exhibited a high anti-interference capability to coexisting substances and the universality toward various organic contaminants degradation. And the used PSBC can be recovered by simple thermal treatment. This work provided a promising heterogeneous PDS activator with plentiful active sites and satisfactory efficiency, which can be beneficial to the cost reduction of wastewater treatment and promotes the application of paper mill sludge in the area of environmental remediation. China’s paper industry consumes a lot of energy and emits huge amounts of pollutions. The Chinese government over the past decades has done a lot to promote energy efficiency of the industry. This paper studies the impact of industrial polices to improve energy efficiency. The energy efficiency change is firstly studied under a framework of total factor efficiency. On this basis, different econometric models are built to discuss the detailed energy efficiency characteristics of the paper industry. The main results are as follow: (i) ownership structure did influence the energy efficiency, but the influence is different in different conditions; (ii) energy efficiency of the paper industry can be improved by economies of scale; (iii) market competition can to some extent overcome the motivation and supervision problem that often occur in state-owned companies; (iv) energy price cannot play the role of resource allocation well in China. The papermaking industry has developed rapidly in recent years in China. Papermaking is a high-energy-consuming process. Consequently, large-scale paper mills usually have cogeneration systems that supply both electricity and steam for the papermaking process. In China, almost all these cogeneration systems in paper mills are powered by coal combustion, which consumes a large amount of energy and emits large amounts of greenhouse gas. The Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology is regarded as a clean and efficient method of coal utilization. In this work, an IGCC process for application in paper mills was designed and modeled. An IGCC coupled with a cascade refrigeration process (CRP) was further proposed in order to reuse the waste heat from the dryer section and improve the energy efficiency of the papermaking process. A paper with a conventional cogeneration system, one with an IGCC cogeneration system, and one with an IGCC coupled with a CRP cogeneration system were analyzed and compared in terms of energy efficiency, capital investment, operational cost, and dynamic payback period. The results showed that the integration of IGCC technology allows paper mills to be more competitive than those featuring conventional cogeneration systems in terms of energy efficiency and operational cost. All- para -aramid paper with both excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability is of great significance for the manufacture of specialty honeycomb materials. Herein, a facile method is reported for the preparation of high performance all- para -aramid paper by impregnating heterocyclic aramid (HA) solution into a para -aramid paper (PAP) produced with poly(p -phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) short fibers and polymerization-induced para -aramid nanofibers (PANFs). Field emission scanning electron microscopy in combination with microscopic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to confirm successful coating of HA on paper surface and infiltration of HA inside PAP. Since HA molecules in solution have similar structure to PPTA molecules and much stronger ability to form hydrogen bonds than PPTA fibers, they can effectively act as a binder for both types of PPTA fibers, greatly enhancing the interfacial adhesion between fibers and densifying the paper structure. As a result of these structural changes and also of the excellent mechanical properties of HA itself, the HA-impregnated PAPs (HA/PAPs) exhibit much better mechanical properties than neat PAP. The tensile strength of HA/PAP can be up to 128.5 MPa, 4.8 times that of neat PAP. The internal bond strength of HA/PAP can reach 356.1 J/m2, being 4.5 times that of neat PAP, showing dramatically improved delamination resistance. The transport properties of gas diffusion layer (GDL) in proton exchange membrane fuel cell are important parameters in fuel cell modelling, and one method to measure them is to simulate the transport of each species at spatial resolutions of a few microns in a microstructure of the GDL. One issue in this method is the size of the microstructure as using an unnecessarily big sample could substantially increase the computational cost. Both carbon-paper and carbon-cloth GDLs are investigated and their microstructures are obtained using numerical generation and X-ray micro-tomography respectively at a resolution of 1.733 µm. For each reconstructed GDL, we use the orthorhombic lattice Boltzmann model to simulate fluid flow through some subsamples taken from it in both the in-plane and the through-plane directions; the results show that the permeability of all subsamples is anisotropic in that their permeability in the in-plane direction is higher than in the through-plane direction. For each GDL, we compare its permeability calculated using samples of different sizes and find its representative elementary volume (REV) – a volume above which the calculated permeability represents the average ability of the GDL to conduct fluids. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the potential risk of exposure to nanoparticles of workers in paper mills. In the final stage of the paper production, the very large sheets are wound onto large reels, where these are processed depending on their ultimate use. Paper is smoothed and compacted by passing through metal rollers. During these mechanical treatments nanometric ultrafine particles are generated. In particular, the nanoparticle presence, size and morphology were investigated and differences between particles produced either in summer or winter seasons were explored. To this aim Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) were employed to analyze nano powders filtered in environments of different paper mills to determine structural morphology and sizes. Large breathable particles, with size in the range from 4 μm to 250 nm have been sampled to evaluate the mean level of exposure. By comparing nanoparticles collected from paper mills in summer and in winter we revealed that the number of nanoparticles collected in winter is strictly related to heat generated by the heating system. Recycled paper mill sludge (RPMS) was hydrothermally treated by subcritical water (SBW) in two modes of operation, namely semi-continuous and batch, at temperatures in the range 150–250 °C, and 100 bar. The performance of both systems was analyzed in terms of degree of hydrolysis, product yield and formation of degradation products. The highest degree of RMPS hydrolysis was achieved using the batch reactor configuration, while in the semi-continuous system higher yields of water soluble compounds (WSC) and monosaccharides were achieved. By using the semi-continuous system at 100 bar, 250 °C and a water flow rate of 5 mL/min, 40% of the organic carbon content of RPMS was recovered in the form of soluble compounds. Additionally 20% of total carbohydrates and 75% of total lignin of RPMS were recovered as soluble material. Detailed mass balances performed for both operational modes revealed that under batch mode, the naturally occurring compounds found in RPMS underwent significant transformation, generating derivatives referred to as degradation products. An analysis of the severity factor was performed for both operational modes. It was concluded that significant values of WSC were only obtained for severity factors higher than four.
