Abstract Recently, the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) products with high spatial (0.1° × 0.1°) and temporal (half-hourly) resolution have become operationally available. It is of crucial importance to comprehensively evaluate these new products before they are applied extensively. This study focuses on statistical and hydrological evaluations of the latest IMERG (Version 05) products: the near-real-time “Early” run and “Late” run IMERG products (IMERG-E and IMERG-L, respectively), and the post-real-time “Final” run IMERG product (IMERG-F) over the mid-latitude humid Mishui basin in South China during 2014–2015, in comparison with their predecessors, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) products (3B42RT and 3B42V7). The post-real-time IMERG-F presents the best performance among the five satellite precipitation products (SPPs), with the highest daily correlation coefficient (CC) of 0.85 and the lowest daily root-mean square error of 5.58 mm at the basin scale. The near-real-time IMERG-E and IMERG-L demonstrate comparable performance with 3B42V7. In addition, the Taylor diagrams visually demonstrate that the IMERG products are better than the 3B42 products. For hydrological simulations under scenario I (model calibration based on rain gauge observations), the post-real-time IMERG-F performs obviously better than the 3B42V7 does, with a relatively high CC of 0.81, a good Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.63, and an acceptable relative bias of −3.98%. Both the IMERG-E and IMERG-L demonstrate a better performance than the 3B42RT does. For scenario II (model recalibration based on each satellite dataset), the hydrological performances of both the IMERG and 3B42 products are improved. The IMERG-E, especially, demonstrates streamflow simulation performance comparable to that of the 3B42V7, both for the whole simulation period and flood season, indicating the great potential of the latest near-real-time IMERG-E product for flood simulation and prediction. Overall, this systematic evaluation highlights that the latest IMERG products have desirable hydrological utility in the study region. This study will provide useful guidelines for hydrological applications of the new generation SPPs, as well as IMERG algorithm development. Drought is a natural disaster and its occurrence and development can be attributed to a range of driving factors, such as deficient precipitation, wind, temperature, land use/land cover changes, and so on. Therefore, attribution and monitoring of droughts are complicated and challenging. Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) has been widely used in meteorological drought monitoring. Nonstationarity has not been considered in SPEI-based drought monitoring. Here we propose a modified SPEI considering the nonstationarity of hydrometeorological processes, i.e. NSPEI hereafter. We observe nonstationarity SPEI in the Northeast, the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The goodness-of-fit can be determined for 76% of the total stations. Under the assumption of nonstationarity, the drought monitoring performance of the NSPEI is more robust than the traditional SPEI. Besides, we evaluate drought conditions across China under four shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), i.e. SSP126, SSP245, SSP370 and SSP585. We identify intensifying droughts in southwest China but a wetting tendency in northern China in winter under the SSP126 scenario; but a significant wetting tendency in southwest China and a drying tendency in northeast China under SSP245, SSP370 and SSP585 scenarios. Flow direction algorithms have important application in attracting geomorphic features and topographic attributes, which serve as inputs for some hydrological and topographical models. Evaluating flow direction algorithms is of great significance and often conducted on synthetic surfaces instead of real digital elevation models for free of approximation errors. However, most widely-used synthetic surfaces are too simplified to represent complex topographical relief of real-world terrains. For this, this work applies a complex synthetic surface of modified Himmelblau's function (HF) to simulate sophisticated terrains encountered in real landscapes. HF surface is spatially smooth and continuous with four hilltops and one valley, where plan curvatures are clustered mainly from −0.1 to 0.1. In addition, a slope line-based discretization numerical (SLDN) approach is designed for obtaining numerical solution to theoretical total contributing area (TCA) on synthetic surfaces of non-integrable slope lines (e.g. HF surface). TCAs estimated by several flow direction algorithms are compared with SLDN-derived TCA quantitatively. Results indicate that the largest and smallest mean size errors are obtained by Random eight-node (Rho8) (i.e. 82.6 %) and Freeman multiple flow direction (FMFD) (i.e. 17.9 %), while the largest and smallest mean extent errors by Eight drainage directions (D8) (i.e. 128.2 %) and Eight drainage directions, least transversal deviation (D8-LTD) (i.e.55.4 %). Most mean errors are larger than 20.0 %, which may not be satisfactory in practice. This work can provide a reference for flow direction algorithms application in digital terrain analysis, and therefore improve accuracy of hydrological, geological and geomorphological models. Understanding changes in human water utilization under the policy environment of the national top-down water unified allocation and regulation (TWAR) is crucial for promoting river health, sustainable resource utilization, and high-quality socioeconomic development along the whole Yellow River, a congenitally water-deficient river in China. This study assessed the TWAR policy effects on the total/sectoral/per capita water uses using the canonical difference-in-difference (DID) model, synthetic control method (SCM), and generalized synthetic control method (GSCM). The net effects of TWAR were assumed to be spatially heterogeneous and associated with variations in water-conserving efficiency, described by two indicators: water-conserving irrigation (WCI) and industrial recycled water (IRW). The suitable threshold intervals of WCI and IRW for benefiting decelerating water utilization were analyzed using a linear mediating effect (ME) model and panel smoothing transformation regression (PSTR) model, to explain the rebound effect in water use under the impact of the prevailing TWAR. The results show that TWAR initially had sustained positive effects on curbing water use growth, with the highest contribution to per capita agricultural water use in the lower section and high-quota region of the Yellow River Basin, but these effects decreased after a decade. Only when the WCI shifted within the threshold interval [0.283, 0.771] and the IRW did not exceed 0.962 could TWAR restrain water use. Emphasizing the conservation-oriented improvement of water use efficiency may necessitate extra attention to regions where water-conserving practices already reach high levels beyond the maximum WCI or IRW thresholds. In this study, a spatiotemporal estimation method based on Funk singular value decomposition (F-SVD) that considers the spatiotemporal correlation of rainfall is proposed to improve estimations from gauge observations. Hourly rainfall data of several flood events are selected to verify the proposed method by comparing with Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Ordinary Kriging (OK) in Hanjiang basin, China. The results show that (1) F-SVD has the best performance in rainfall estimation, the larger the amount of rainfall event, the greater the improvement of F-SVD method as compared to OK and IDW; (2) through the combination/integration with F-SVD, the accuracy of IDW and OK can be greatly improved. Therefore, F-SVD can be employed as a practical method to estimate rainfall spatial distribution, which is essential data for regional hydrological modelling and water resource analysis. • A spatiotemporal estimation method based on F-SVD is proposed to estimate rainfall using gauge observation. • F-SVD is utilized to decompose the spatiotemporal matrix consisted of rainfall data. • F-SVD has higher accuracy and lower uncertainty compared to OK and IDW. • Through combination with F-SVD, the accuracy of IDW and OK can be greatly improved. • It is a practical method to process data for regional hydrological modelling. The evolutionary algorithms can solve reservoir operation with a fast convergence rate whereas the major impediments in handling the joint operation of mega cascade reservoirs easily trigger the technical bottlenecks, i.e. trapping into a local optimum, instability and loss of good solutions. This study proposes a methodology that fuses three auxiliary strategies into the Kidney Algorithm (KA) to optimize the hydropower output for conquering the bottlenecks in the KA concerning the joint operation of six mega cascade reservoirs located in the Jin-Sha River basin in China. The proposed theme would contribute to the application of the state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms in boosting the cleaner hydropower production of mega cascade reservoirs. The three auxiliary strategies are that: firstly, the exploration and exploitation strategy is employed to stimulate the movement of solutions to surmount technical drawback of trapping into a local optimum; secondly, the adaptive strategy is used to automatically adjust algorithm parameter values to overcome the instability problem; lastly, the elitism strategy is introduced to preserve the best solution at every epoch to avoid the loss of good solutions. Our methodology, without expanding or upgrading hydraulic infrastructures, can increase the hydropower production of the six mega cascade reservoirs by 7.8%, as compared with the standard operation policy. The hydropower production can reach 4.8 billion kW·h/year, which can decrease 3.77 billion kg/year in CO 2 emission, and bring 217.44 million USD/year in hydropower benefits. The improved KA can considerably increase the reliability and resilience of hydropower output as well as largely decrease the vulnerability of hydropower output. The results suggest that our methodology can stimulate hydropower output to yield more benefits regarding cleaner production, carbon emission reduction and sustainability. Monitoring of droughts is the first step into human adaptation and related management of drought hazards. Therefore, drought index is critical in drought monitoring practice. However, the standing drought indices include no information about agricultural irrigation. In this case, based on the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and the Self-Calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI), here we proposed the Modified Palmer Drought Severity Index (MPDSI) by considering agricultural irrigation such as irrigation quotas and soil water deficits. We compared changes of droughts monitored by MPDSI and other drought indices considered in this study, and found that MPDSI can well monitor drought conditions in irrigated regions. In this sense, MPDSI can monitor the actual drought conditions under human influences such as irrigation. Besides, we also found that MPDSI can well lessen overestimation of drought conditions by PDSI in terms of drought duration and drought intensity. Therefore, we can conclude that MPDSI can be accepted in drought monitoring practice across China. Abstract The high complexity of multi-objective joint reservoir operation imposes challenging barriers to the pursuit of optimal hydroelectricity output. Inasmuch as multi-objective evolution optimization algorithms, including the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II), are trapped in the curse of dimensionality which could not be effectively solved the multi-objective operation of more than ten reservoirs. This study proposes a methodology that integrate the NSGA-II with a successive approximation approach to optimize the hydropower output for conquering the curse of dimensionality under the joint operation of 21 mega cascade reservoirs located in the Upper Yangtze River Basin of China. The successive approximation approach could effectively decompose the mutually related M-dimensional problem into M individual one-dimensional problems, which ingeniously overcomes the curse of dimensionality. The proposed model is anchored with strategies of advancing impoundment timings and raising water levels of cascade reservoirs. We show that our methodology, without adding or upgrading hydraulic infrastructures, empowers the joint operation to reach 110.79 billion kW·h/year (9.8% improvement) in hydropower output, which could reduce 86.97 billion kg/year in CO 2 emission, and to provide 44.97 billion m3/year in water supply with flood risk less than 0.016. The results suggest that our methodology can spur hydroelectricity output to support China’s tactics in fulfilling the pledge of carbon emission reduction and non-fossil energy expansion to 20% by 2030. • The most suitable ecological streamflow was calculated via kernel density estimation method. • Ecological drought was identified using the variable threshold method based on ecological streamflow. • Impacts of climate variability and human activities on ecological drought were quantified. • Human activities are the dominant factor aggravating the ecological drought in the Weihe River Basin. Although various studies have investigated the impacts of climate variability and human activities on drought, researches specifically analysing the impact on ecological drought are still limited. A deep understanding of the climatic and anthropogenic effects on ecological drought processes is crucial for ecological regulation and management in the changing environments. In the present study, an integrated approach for comprehensive understanding and quantification of ecological drought in rivers was proposed which first applied the nonparametric kernel density estimation (KDE) method to calculate the most suitable ecological streamflow (MSES) for a river ecosystem. Then, the variable threshold level method based on the MSES for each month and the run theory method were applied to identify the ecological drought duration and deficit volumes. Finally, a quantification approach based on hydrological model simulation was proposed to attribute the impacts of climate variability and human activities on ecological drought. The proposed approach was applied on two catchments, Xianyang (XY) and Huaxian (HX) within the Weihe River Basin (WRB) in northern China. Comparison results obtained using the two empirical methods revealed that the MSES calculated using the KDE method was reasonable and can be used for ecological drought identification. The identification results showed that both the median and upper quartile values of the drought duration and deficit volumes during the disturbed period (1991–2017) were greater than those during the undisturbed period (1961–1990). Quantification results showed that human activities were the dominant factor aggravating ecological drought in the WRB after 1990. The contribution rates of climate variability and human activities toward ecological drought variations were 25.6% and 74.4%, respectively, for the XY station and 42.7% and 57.3%, respectively, for the HX station. At present, climate change has brought huge challenges to vegetation and ecosystems. As the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is a sensitive area of global climate change, the dynamic assessment of its ecological vulnerability is very important. In order to better quantify the relative size of the ecological vulnerability of the QTP, this study starts from the background characteristics and dynamic change process of the ecosystem, by fitting the vegetation index net primary productivity (NPP) and the temperature, precipitation and meteorological elements. The coefficients of autocorrelation multiple linear regression are used to construct an ecological vulnerability model from the three dimensions of "exposure-sensitivity-elasticity" to conduct a dynamic assessment of ecological vulnerability. Based on the evaluation results, from 2000 to 2015, the ecologically fragile areas were mainly distributed in the eastern and central areas of the QTP. The ecological fragility of the western region showed obvious discontinuities, with high and low vulnerabilities staggered. The three ecosystems of forest, grassland, and bare land have significant differences in their ecological vulnerability to climate change, showing a clear positive correlation in the three dimensions of exposure, sensitivity, and resilience, but in terms of the contribution rates of the three dimensions. The performance is relatively similar, and the relative relationship between the three dimensions is relatively balanced. The longitude and precipitation of the sample points have a greater impact on ecological vulnerability and its three dimensions, and the impact of precipitation on ecological vulnerability is more significant than that of temperature. The Space-Time Image Velocimetry (STIV) is a time-averaged velocity measurement method, which takes river surface images as the analysis object, and detects the Main Orientation of Texture (MOT) in a generated Space-Time Image (STI) to obtain one-dimensional velocities on the water surface. The STIV has great potential in real-time monitoring of river flow owing to its high spatial resolution and low time complexity. However, the generated STI contains a lot of noise and interference texture, which is inevitable in practical applications. The practicality of the STIV is severely limited by the low-quality STI. To solve this problem, a denoising method based on the filtering technology is proposed and combined with different texture detection algorithms in this paper. The accuracy of this method is verified through a comparative field experiment with an impellor-style current meter. The experimental results show: (1) By using this new denoising method, the robustness and accuracy of the STIV are significantly improved no matter what kind of texture detection algorithm is adopted; (2) Among all the texture detection algorithms, the FFT-based STIV combined with the new denoising method performs best. The relative errors of the surface velocities are controlled within 6%, and the relative errors of the discharges are controlled within ±4%. • STIV utilizes the STIs to obtain 1-D flow but is limited by the low-quality STIs. • For enhancing the quality of the STI, a new denoising method based on the filtering technology was developed. • This denoising method was combined with different texture detection algorithms. • For the validation, a comparative field experiment with an impellor-style current meter was conducted. • By using this new denoising method, the robustness and accuracy of the STIV are significantly improved. In this paper, we comprehensively evaluated the utility of integrated long-term satellite-based precipitation and evapotranspiration products for drought monitoring over mainland China. The latest Integrated Multi-satelliteE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement V06 three Runs precipitation products, i.e., the near real-time Early Run (IMERG-E) and Late Run (IMERG-L) and the post-real time Final Run (IMERG-F), and the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model V3.3a (GLEAM) potential evapotranspiration (PET) products from 2001 to 2017 were considered. The accuracy of IMERG precipitation and GLEAM PET products was first evaluated against observed precipitation and Penman-Monteith method estimated PET, respectively, based on dense meteorological station network. The Standard Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) calculated based on IMERG precipitation and GLEAM PET products (SPEIs, including SPEI E , SPEI L and SPEI F corresponding to IMERG-E, IMERG-L and IMERG-F, respectively) were then validated by using SPEI calculated based on meteorological data (SPEIm) at multiple temporal-spatial scales. Finally, four typical drought events were selected to analyse the ability of SPEIs to characterize the temporal-spatial evolution of drought situations. The results showed that the IMERG-F presents much better performance than IMERG-E and IMERG-L in terms of higher CC and smaller BIAS and RMSE values over mainland China. The GLEAM PET well simulated the change trend of reference PET, but generally underestimated reference PET in Northwest China (NW), Xinjiang (XJ) and Qinghai–Tibet plateau (TP). In general, the performances of SPEIs over eastern China and Southwest China (SW) were significantly superior to their performances in the NW, XJ, and TP regions. Even though the SPEI F performed the best, the SPEI E and SPEI L also performed reasonably well in some specific regions. SPEIs can well capture the temporal process and reasonably reflect the spatial characteristics for four typical drought events. It is thus highlighted that the latest IMERG precipitation (especially for IMERG-F) and GLEAM PET products could be used as alternative data sources for comprehensive drought monitoring, on account of the water balance principle over mainland China, particularly in eastern China and SW China. • Propose a multi-objective method to raise mutual benefits of water-food-energy nexus. • Floating photovoltaic deployment on ponds drives up renewable energy output. • Hybrid hydro-floating photovoltaic power generation raises energy efficiency. • Energy-driven solutions improve water-food-energy nexus management. Hybrid hydropower and floating photovoltaic power generation has far-reaching effects on the intertwined water, food and energy (WFE) nexus, but the complementary operation is fundamentally challenging especially under high uncertainties of hydro-meteorological conditions. This study proposed an artificial intelligence-based WFE system-overarching solution driven by hybrid hydro-floating photovoltaic power generation for promoting nexus synergies. A multi-objective optimization model grounded upon the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm was developed to simultaneously maximize hydro-floating photovoltaic power output, the ratio of water storage to reservoir capacity, and the ratio of water supply to water demand. The Shihmen Reservoir watershed and its WFE system in northern Taiwan constituted the case study. The results demonstrated that the proposed optimization model could significantly improve synergistic benefits of the WFE nexus by reaching 13%, 13.3% and 15.1% in water storage, food production and hydro-floating photovoltaic power output, respectively. The optimal tilt angles of floating photovoltaic installation would vary between −11.9° (Summer) and 44.3° (Winter). This study opens up new perspectives on green energy production expansion while stimulating WFE nexus synergies in support of policy-makers with feasible schemes on floating photovoltaic deployment in the interest of social sustainability. In consequence, new niches are exploited for floating photovoltaic deployment and give rise to impact mitigation concerning hydro-meteorological uncertainties on WFE nexus management.
