Xylan is primarily found in the secondary cell wall of plants providing strength and integrity. To take advantage of the reinforcing effect of xylan in papermaking, it is crucial to understand its role in pulp fibers, as it undergoes substantial changes during pulping. However, the contributions of xylan that is added afterwards (extrinsic) and xylan present after pulping (intrinsic) remain largely unexplored. Here, we partially degraded xylan from refined bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) and adsorbed xylan onto BSKP. Enzymatic degradation of 1 % xylan resulted in an open hand sheet structure, while adsorption of 3 % xylan created a denser fiber network. The mechanical properties improved with adsorbed xylan, but decreased more significantly after enzymatic treatment. We propose that the enhancement in mechanical properties by adsorbed extrinsic xylan is due to increased fiber-fiber bonds and sheet density, while the deterioration in mechanical properties of the enzyme treated pulp is caused by the opposite effect. These findings suggest that xylan is decisive for fiber network strength. However, intrinsic xylan is more critical, and the same properties cannot be achieved by readsorbing xylan onto the fibers. Paper, a readily available renewable resource, comprises of interwoven cellulosic fibers, which can be functionalized to develop interesting low-cost adsorbent material for water purification. In this study, polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized paper was used for the removal of hazardous pollutants such as Au and Ag nanoparticles, Cr(VI) anions, Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Cu 2+ cations from spiked water samples. Compared to untreated paper, the PEI-coated paper showed significant improvement in adsorption capacities toward the pollutants investigated in this study. Kinetics, isotherm models, pH, and desorption studies were carried out to study the adsorption mechanism of pollutants on the adsorbent surface. Adsorption of pollutants was better described by pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model. Maximum adsorption of anionic pollutants was achieved at pH 5 while that of cations was at pH > 6. Overall, the PEI-functionalized paper showed interesting Langmuir adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions such as Cr(VI) (68 mg/g), Ni 2+ (208 mg/g), Cd 2+ (370 mg/g), and Cu 2+ (435 mg/g) ions at neutral pH. In addition, the modified paper was also used to remove Ag-citrate (79 mg/g), Ag-PVP (46 mg/g), Au-citrate (30 mg/g), Au-PVP (17 mg/g) nanoparticles from water. Desorption of NPs from the adsorbent was done by washing with 2 M HCl or thiourea solution, while heavy metal ions were desorbed using 1 M NaOH or HNO 3 solution. Abstract: A thermochemical method was performed to enhance lead adsorption of unbleached newspaper pulp. Unbleached pulp was obtained after mechanical treatment of waste newspaper and was chemically modified with citric acid (CA) at 90°C for 90min. The parameters under investigation were the pH of adsorption solution (3–9), the concentration of mechanically and chemically treated pulps (0.1–1g), the concentration of CA (0.5M and 1M), the initial concentration of lead (20–1000mg/l) and the pulp-lead solution contact time (0–24h). The maximum adsorption capacity of mechanically treated newspaper pulp (MT-pulp) increased by 35% (25.71mg/g) after modification with 0.5M CA and 82% (34.6mg/g) with 1M CA. The modification process resulted in higher negative values of zeta potential and surface charge of mechanically treated pulp reaching the highest charge and maximum lead adsorption at pH=6. The adsorption experimental data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model and inferred that adsorption and ion-exchange are major mechanisms for binding Pb2+ ions. Kinetic studies for three different concentrations of Pb2+ showed that the adsorption process involved two stages and the experimental data followed the pseudo-second order model. Abstract: A rapid non-destructive sampling technique for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by paper sheets is described. A capillary, which is connected to a microcolumn packed with Tenax TA, is inserted between two sheets at the centre of a paper stack encapsulated inside a PET/Al/PE composite foil. The other end of the microcolumn is connected to a gas-tight syringe and an appropriate volume of gaseous phase is aspirated. The microcolumn is then thermally desorbed in a modified GC inlet (modification is presented) and analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). In the chromatogram from the analysis of artificially aged paper sample 21 compounds were identified. Advantages of the method including the short sampling time (1min), simplicity and economic aspect are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
