Abstract Recently, there has been a flurry of publications assessing the effect of air pollution on neurodevelopment. Here we present a summary of the results obtained within the BRain dEvelopment and Air polluTion ultrafine particles in scHool childrEn (BREATHE) Project, which aimed to evaluate the effects of the exposure to traffic related air pollutants in schoolchildren in Barcelona. To this end, we comprehensively characterised air quality in 39 urban schools from Barcelona and identified the main determinants of children's increased exposure. We propose a series of measures to be implemented to improve air quality in schools within the urban context and, consequently, minimise the negative effects on children's neurodevelopment that we found to be associated with the exposure to air pollution. We also aimed to list some of the actions pushed by governments and the society (including school managers, parents, and children) that have been taking place around Europe for promoting better high quality in the school and its surroundings. The relative impact of non-exhaust sources (i.e. road dust, tire wear, road wear and brake wear particles) on urban air quality is increasing. Among them, road dust resuspension has generally the highest impact on PM concentrations but its spatio-temporal variability has been rarely studied and modeled. Some recent studies attempted to observe and describe the time-variability but, as it is driven by traffic and meteorology, uncertainty remains on the seasonality of emissions. The knowledge gap on spatial variability is much wider, as several factors have been pointed out as responsible for road dust build-up: pavement characteristics, traffic intensity and speed, fleet composition, proximity to traffic lights, but also the presence of external sources. However, no parameterization is available as a function of these variables. We investigated mobile road dust smaller than 10 μm (MF10) in two cities with different climatic and traffic conditions (Barcelona and Turin), to explore MF10 seasonal variability and the relationship between MF10 and site characteristics (pavement macrotexture, traffic intensity and proximity to braking zone). Moreover, we provide the first estimates of emission factors in the Po Valley both in summer and winter conditions. Our results showed a good inverse relationship between MF10 and macro-texture, traffic intensity and distance from the nearest braking zone. We also found a clear seasonal effect of road dust emissions, with higher emission in summer, likely due to the lower pavement moisture. These results allowed building a simple empirical mode, predicting maximal dust loadings and, consequently, emission potential, based on the aforementioned data. This model will need to be scaled for meteorological effect, using methods accounting for weather and pavement moisture. This can significantly improve bottom-up emission inventory for spatial allocation of emissions and air quality management, to select those roads with higher emissions for mitigation measures. Abstract: We report on the effect of a major firework event on urban background atmospheric PM2.5 chemistry, using 24-h data collected over 8 weeks at two sites in Girona, Spain. The firework pollution episode (Sant Joan fiesta on 23rd June 2008) measured in city centre parkland increased local background PM2.5 concentrations as follows: Sr (x86), K (x26), Ba (x11), Co (x9), Pb (x7), Cu (x5), Zn (x4), Bi (x4), Mg (x4), Rb (x4), Sb (x3), P (x3), Ga (x2), Mn (x2), As (x2), Ti (x2) and SO4 2− (x2). Marked increases in these elements were also measured outside the park as the pollution cloud drifted over the city centre, and levels of some metals remained elevated above background for days after the event as a reservoir of metalliferous dust persisted within the urban area. Transient high-PM pollution episodes are a proven health hazard, made worse in the case of firework combustion because many of the elements released are both toxic and finely respirable, and because displays commonly take place in an already polluted urban atmosphere. Abstract: Simultaneous measurements of the PM concentration levels and chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols at a regional background (RB) and an urban background (UB) site, located in the same geographic region, allowed for the determination of their urban and regional contributions. In the specific case of the North-Western region of the Mediterranean the RB amount has been quantified in 18, 13 and 12 μg m−3 for PM10, PM2.5 and PM1, respectively, whereas the UB contribution reached 22, 13 and 8 μg m−3, respectively. The UB contributions in the Western Mediterranean are much higher than those observed in other European regions; especially concerning the coarse fraction. The high loads of road dust in the urban areas across the Mediterranean may account for these large differences. The urban contributions are extremely enriched in Ca, Fe, Sb, Sn, Cu, Zn, being the main tracers of the road dust, with concentrations up to 6–8 times higher than those at the RB. Elemental carbon and nitrate are mainly derived from direct vehicular emissions. Some industrial tracers (Mn, Pb, Bi) are also enriched in the urban area. The evaluation of the Cu/Sb, Cu/Zn, Cu/Cd and Cu/Pb ratios and the high enrichment of these trace elements versus the Upper Crustal Composition average values corroborates the importance of the road-traffic emissions in the study area, also influencing the RB. The supplementary results from a suburban site in the Balearic Islands and the evaluation of the V/Ni ratios evidence the strong signature of fuel-oil combustion processes, which is a general characteristic of the Mediterranean aerosols. Abstract: The insular suburban site of Castillo de Bellver was selected for the study of the variability of PM levels and composition in the Western Mediterranean Basin (WMB). Mean annual (in 2004) PM10 and PM2.5 levels at this site were 29 and 20µg/m3, respectively. These levels may be regarded as relatively low when compared with other suburban insular locations in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin (EMB), but they are higher than those recorded at most of the European suburban sites, especially in Northern and Western Europe. Seasonal variability of PM levels at this site is governed by meteorology rather than local emissions, whereas the daily cycles are clearly defined by the anthropogenic emissions, mainly coming from the urban area of Palma de Mallorca and the harbour area of the same city. Concerning the aerosol composition at this site, the main PM constituent is the mineral matter (29% in PM10 and 16 % in PM2.5), more than 50% (in PM10) being attributable to African dust. The amount of secondary inorganic aerosols is also very high (27% in PM10 and 34% in PM2.5), with the predominance of fine ammonium sulphate, and in a less proportion fine ammonium nitrate (in winter) and coarse Ca and Na nitrate (with higher importance in summer). The carbonaceous particles, dominantly fine, account for 17% of PM10 and 25% of PM2.5. The elemental carbon/organic carbon (EC/OC) ratio reached a mean value of 0.17, similar to those observed at regional background sites in the WMB coast of Spain. The sea spray aerosols (mainly coarse) represented around 10% of PM10, and only 4% in PM2.5. Finally, the unaccounted fraction increased from 15% to 20% in PM2.5, being mostly attributed to water. The concentrations of trace elements in PM10 and PM2.5 were usually in the range to those observed in regional background sites in the Iberian Peninsula, with the exception of the typical tracers of road traffic such as Cu, Sb, Zn, Sn and Ba, which presented concentrations in the range of urban sites of Iberia. A detailed physical and chemical characterisation of total suspended particles (TSP) in the highly industrialised city of Huelva (southwestern Spain) was carried out. The results evidenced a coarse grain-size prevalence (PM10 accounting for only 40% of TSP mass, 37 and 91 μg/m3, respectively). PM10 levels are in the usual range for urban background sites in Spain. The crustal, anthropogenic and marine components accounted for a mean of a 40%, 24% and 5% of bulk TSP, respectively. As expected from the industrial activities, relatively high PO43− and As levels for an urban site were detected. In addition to the crustal and marine components, source apportionment analysis revealed three additional emission sources influencing the levels and composition of TSP: (a) a petrochemical source, (b) a mixed metallurgical-phosphate source, (c) and an unknown source (Sb and NO3−).Due to the high local emissions, the mean TSP anthropogenic contribution (mostly PM10) obtained for all possible air mass transport scenarios reached 18–29 μg/m3. The 2010 annual EU PM10 limit value (20 μg/m3) would be exceeded by the anthropogenic load recorded for all the air mass transport scenarios, with the exception of the North Atlantic transport (only 15% of the sampling days). Under African air mass transport scenarios (20% of sampling days), the TSP crustal contribution reached near three times the local crustal contribution. Abstract: The present work shows a straightforward procedure to indirectly estimate the chemical composition at a given site only from the determination of the PM concentrations, and the classification of the days according to the main meteorological scenarios. A previous study based on the mean chemical composition associated to the main meteorological scenarios is required. This experiment has been carried out with data from two monitoring sites in the North-Western Mediterranean, one regional and one suburban background. At both sites, one-year datasets on chemical PM10 composition were obtained. Based on these datasets, the mean PM10 compositions according to the most relevant meteorological situations were calculated for both locations. After that, the reconstruction of the chemical composition for all the days with available PM10 concentrations was completed. Subsequently, the estimated PM10 composition was compared with that determined experimentally. The comparison between the rebuilt and the experimental results was very satisfactory in the case of the regional background site, and relatively replaced in the other case. Furthermore, the validation of the method at the regional background site has been conducted from the reconstruction of a 4-year data base, and subsequent comparison with the experimental chemical composition. Our results show that it is possible to attain a good approach to the chemical composition at regional background sites, where local emission sources are negligible. Conversely, when the local sources rise in importance, i.e., at a suburban background site, the approach is suitable only for those components with a more regional origin and/or those from long range transport of air masses. Real time measurements of number concentrations (13–800 nm, N13–800) of size discriminated sub-micrometric aerosols and PM (0.3–10 μm) mass concentrations were carried out over a one-year-period at an urban site in Barcelona, North-eastern Spain. Annual mean levels of N13–800 were close to 17,000 cm−3, and strongly dependent on road traffic emissions. Annual mean PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 levels were 39, 25 and 18 μg/m3, being highly influenced not only by road traffic but also by industrial emissions as well as natural events such as African dust outbreaks. Variability of number concentrations and size distribution of sub-micrometric aerosols was strongly dependent on meteorology. Primary emissions exert a high influence on the variability of levels of ultrafine (<100 nm) particles under intense Atlantic advections (lowest PM levels), while coagulation and condensation processes are enhanced under urban pollution scenarios (highest levels of PM), and photochemical nucleation processes can be an important source of ultrafine particles at midday in summer (low PM levels). African dust episodes did not modify the total number but affected the N > 400 nm. This study allows us to compare aerosol number and mass concentrations in air quality monitoring of an urban environment. Ultrafine particles measurements are indicated to detect the variability of primary traffic emissions, as well as some atmospheric processes. Measurements of PM levels are necessary to monitor other important PM sources in the studied area such as dust resuspension from road traffic or African dust. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In highly industrialized areas, abating particulate matter (PM) is complex owing to the variety of emission sources with different chemical profiles that may mix in the atmosphere. Gijón—an industrial city in northern Spain—was selected as a case study to better understand the key emission sources and improve air quality in highly industrialized areas. Accordingly, the trends of various air quality indicators (PM10, PM2.5, SO 2 , NO 2 , and O 3) during the past decade (2010–2019) were analyzed. Additionally, the inorganic and organic PM10 compositions were analyzed for source apportionment studies and to assess the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on PM10 levels. The results revealed that over the past decade, PM10 concentrations decreased, whereas PM2.5 concentrations dominated by secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) remained relatively constant. Notably, during the COVID-19 lockdown, the PM10 concentration increased by 9.1%, primarily owing to an increase in regional SIA (>65%) due to specific meteorological conditions that favor the formation of secondary PM from gaseous precursors. Overall, eight key PM10 sources were identified: "industrial fugitive PM resuspension" (FPM, 28% of mean PM10 concentration), "aged sea spray" (SSp, 16%), "secondary nitrate" (SN, 15%), "local diffuse source" (LPM, 12%), "solid fuel combustion" (SFC, 7.8%), "biomass burning" (BB, 7.4%), "secondary sulphate" (SSu, 6.0%), and "sinter" (SIN, 4.5%). The PM10 concentration in Gijón is significantly influenced by the integrated steel industry (FPM, SFC, and SIN; 41% of PM10) and fugitive primary PM emissions were the main source (FPM and LPM; 40%). To reduce PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations, industrial fugitive emissions, which are currently poorly regulated, and SIA precursors must be abated. This study provides a methodological approach that combines trend analysis, chemical speciation, and source apportionment for assessing pollution abatement strategies in industrialized areas with a complex mix of emission sources. The occurrence of African dust outbreaks over specific areas of the Mediterranean basin has been associated with increases in the PM 10 concentration levels and also in the mortality rates. Different hypothesis have been proposed in the last years to explain the processes by which African dust storms generates negative health effect over urban areas in southern Europe but are still not clear. Some authors have suggested the existence of an interaction between air pollutants from local sources and the occurrence of African dust outbreaks, with a consequent increase in the risk of mortality due to exposure to these anthropogenic emissions. This study sought to identify such a synergistic effect in the Madrid metropolitan area. To this end, an assessment of the influence of African dust on air quality levels, the vertical structure of the atmosphere over Madrid and daily mortality was carried out. Our results indicated that African dust caused a reduction of the mixing layer height and the surface wind speed, by reducing the amount of solar radiation reaching the ground. These facts favored the accumulation of air pollutants emissions from local anthropogenic sources. Moreover, when the dust contribution to PM 10 levels exceeded a threshold value (8 μg/m3), particulate matter mass (PM 10 , PM 2.5) and number (ultra-fine particles) concentration as well as levels of gaseous air pollutants (CO, NO and NO 2) registered at urban-background and urban-traffic monitoring sites, increased with statistical significance. In these conditions, it was found a statistically significant increase in risk of daily mortality in the PM 10 exposure. Hence, ambient air in Madrid was more toxic during African dust events of increasing intensity due to this synergistic effect. Because it can be envisaged that the frequency, duration and intensity of dust storms will increase in the north of Africa due to climate change, it will be a priority to put forward and assess proposals to mitigate the adverse effects on health, focused on the reduction of air pollutant emissions from local sources, as well as proposals regarding the adaptation of the population in urban areas across the Mediterranean basin. • African dust produced a reduction of the mixing layer height over Madrid. • Air pollutants emissions from local sources accumulated in the reduced mixing layer. • This synergistic effect made more toxic the ambient air in Madrid. • Risk of daily mortality in the PM 10 exposure increased in intense African dust events. • Measures for reducing harmful effects should focus on local anthropogenic sources. Background Evidence on the short-term effects of ultrafine particles (with diameter < 100 nm, UFP) on health is still inconsistent. New particles in ambient urban air are the result of direct emissions and also the formation of secondary UFP from gaseous precursors. We segregated UFP into these two components and investigated their impact on daily mortality in three Spanish cities affected by different sources of air pollution. Methods We separated the UFP using a method based on the high correlation between black carbon (BC) and particle number concentration (N). The first component accounts for aerosol constituents emitted by vehicle exhaust (N1) and the second for the photochemical new particle formation enhancements (N2). We applied city-specific Poisson regression models, adjusting for long-term trends, temperature and population dynamics. Results Mean BC levels were higher in Barcelona and Tenerife (1.8 and 1.2 μg·m − 3 , respectively) than in Huelva (0.8 μg·m − 3 ). While mean UFP concentrations were similar in the three cities, from which N1 was 40% in Barcelona, 46% in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and 27% in Huelva. We observed an association with N1 and daily mortality in Barcelona, by increasing approximately 1.5% between lags 0 and 2, per an interquartile increase (IQR) of 3277 cm − 3 , but not with N2. A similar pattern was found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, although none of the associations were significant. Conversely, in the industrial city of Huelva mortality was associated with N2 at lag 0, by increasing 3.9% per an IQR of 12,032·cm − 3 . Conclusion The pattern and origin of UFP determines their short-term effect on human health. BC is possibly the better parameter to evaluate the health effects of particulate vehicle exhaust emissions, although in areas influenced by domestic solid fuel combustion this should also be taken into account. Evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) was applied to quantify HULIS (humic-like substances) for the first time in 2012 winter and 2013 summer at an urban site in Lanzhou. Water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), water soluble inorganic ions, and carbonaceous species (OC/EC) were also analyzed. The results show that OM (Organic Matter = OC × 1.6, constituting 45.8% to PM 2.5 ) was the most abundant species, followed by SNA (SO 4 2 − + NO 3 − + NH 4 + , constituting 23.4% to PM 2.5 ). The chemical species were in the order of: OC > EC > SO 4 2 − > NO 3 − > NH 4 + > Cl − > Ca 2 + > K + . The annual average concentration of HULIS was 4.70 μg/m − 3 and HULISc (carbon content of HULIS) contributed 6.19% to PM 2.5 and 45.6% to WSOC, indicating that HULIS was the most important components of WSOC. The concentration of HULIS was 2.14 ± 0.80 μg/m 3 in summer and 7.24 ± 2.77 μg/m 3 in winter, respectively. The concentrations of HULIS were relatively low and stable in summer, while high and varied dramatically in winter. The abundance of HULISc in WSOC shows a more concentrated distribution in Lanzhou, with a range between 0.28–0.57. The ratios of HULIS/K + were 6.25 ± 1.41 and 6.14 ± 1.96 in summer and winter, respectively, suggesting there were other significant sources in addition to biomass burning emissions. HULIS and WSOC exhibited similar seasonal variation and had a strong positive correlation. In addition to the good relationship (0.89) between HULIS and Cl − in winter, the great enhancement of HULIS with significantly high Cl − and relatively low K + in winter indicated that residential coal burning was probably an important HULIS source in winter. Correlation and back trajectory analysis suggested that biomass burning and secondary formation were also important HULIS sources and the contribution of HULIS from dust could be neglected. With the objective of estimating the impact of harbour activities on ambient PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels at the urban area of Barcelona, a one year long monitoring campaign was carried out in the context of the European APICE project (MED-FEDER-EC). This campaign was simultaneously conducted at the port and a central urban background site. A detailed PM 10 and PM 2.5 chemical speciation analysis was carried out with samples from both sites. Subsequently, a source apportionment analysis by means of the PMF receptor model was performed. Six common factors were identified, explaining local to regional emission sources (fuel oil combustion, industrial emissions, mineral-road dust resuspension, and road traffic emissions) and aerosol formation/transformation processes (secondary aerosols including ammonium sulphate and organic aerosols, and a mixed source accounting for aged sea spray and secondary nitrate). Around 50–55% PM 10 and PM 2.5 measured at the port was attributed to harbour activities: mineral matter from road dust and construction works of a new port area, vehicle traffic and fuel oil combustion. The estimated contribution of harbour emissions to the urban background reached 9–12% for PM 10 and 11–15% for PM 2.5 and is linked to primary emissions from fuel oil combustion but also to the formation of secondary aerosols. It becomes relevant to highlight the significantly higher contribution of secondary aerosols at the urban background when compared with the harbour site. Our hypothesis points to the fast formation of secondary ammonium sulphate within the city, after the reaction of SO 2 /H 2 SO 4 transported by sea breezes with NH 3 , which is emitted in large amounts in Barcelona; and also to the enhanced formation of secondary organic aerosols within the city. This study broadens our knowledge on atmospheric phenomenology in urban Mediterranean cities and claims for effective abatement strategies focused on maritime practises, in agreement with the driving axis of the APICE project. Air quality in nine National Parks in mainland Spain was assessed analysing SO 2 , NO x , O 3 , PM 10 and PM 2.5 data from background stations. As emissions in and around parks are limited, the levels of primary pollutants are low. Concentrations of secondary pollutants are high especially in summer due to photochemical production. The geographical variability of pollutants responds to regional emission patterns and the dominant circulation regimes in different regions resulting in west-east gradients for O 3 and PM . Seasonal variability of pollutants was also interpreted in virtue of transport scenarios, changes in photochemical activity and emissions variability. NO x and SO 2 , maximize in winter due to higher emissions while O 3 and PM do it in summer due to photochemical production, lower precipitation and, in the case of PM , the occurrence of African dust outbreaks. Road dust emission is an emerging issue in air quality due to the lack of remediation measures in contrast to vehicle exhaust emissions. The evidence of receptor modeling studies allows for quantifying impact on a few receptors, but the high cost of PM chemical speciation data and the questionable representativeness of single monitoring sites, limit considerably the development of population exposure estimates and epidemiologic studies based on georeferenced data. This study attempts to initiate and promote urban-scale dispersion modeling for road dust emissions, which will allow for a more robust estimate of population exposure and health outcomes. The TNO URBIS (URBan Information System) model was applied in the city of Barcelona, implementing a Gaussian line source and a street canyon dispersion model, together with new experimental estimates of road dust emission factors and algorithm to describe the time variability. Annual, daily and hourly road dust contributions were simulated and validated against observation of PM10, mineral dust and hourly PM2.5-10 concentrations. Results show that road dust contributed 9–15% to PM10 levels at background sites, and 23–44% at traffic sites. Highest contributions were modeled in the commercial/residential district where most of population live and work (Eixample) structured by 120 m wide square blocks, separated by roads with >10,000 vehicles per day. Street level contributions rise up to 20 μ g/m 3 (96% of roads) and an additional 3% of roads within 20–40 μ g/m 3 . Hourly simulations of road dust contributions revealed to benefit from the implementation of the new emission module ( Amato et al., 2012 ), able to describe the exponential recovery of road dust emission potential after rain events, when compared to common approach such as the use of constant emission factor or an ON/OFF approach. Correlation coefficients with observed data varied from 0.61, 0.58 and 0.43 for annual, daily and hourly means, respectively, revealing a clear improvement in terms of both spatial and temporal variability. However, more efforts need to be done in validating the model in different climatic scenarios and evaluating the seasonal variation of road dust emissions, due to droughts or Saharan dust events. In recent years monitoring the presence of psychotropic compounds in wastewater has been proposed as a tool to estimate community drug use. Measurement of drugs of abuse (DAs) in airborne particulate is currently being explored as an additional tool to evaluate drug use patterns in time and space, and identify potential emission sources. In this study, we comprehensively monitor the occurrence of 22 licit and illicit DAs and transformation products, belonging to 6 different chemical groups, in airborne particulate matter (PM10) in the city of Barcelona. In order to study spatial and temporal variations, samples were collected from 12 different selected locations on one weekday (Wednesday) and one weekend day (Saturday), during five consecutive weeks. A previously developed analytical methodology, based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) determination, was adapted for analysis of the target compounds with satisfactory performance, ensuring reliability of results. Among the investigated compounds, cannabinol (CBN), cocaine (COC), and methamphetamine (MA) were found to be the most ubiquitous and abundant compounds in PM10 with concentrations ranging from 0.7 pg/m 3 (MA) to 6020 pg/m 3 (CBN). Significant differences in total DA concentrations in PM10 were observed across sampling days and locations. DA emissions were identified in highly densely populated areas, where popular commercial and nightlife zones are located. Psychoactive effects due to inhalation of measured concentrations are probably negligible; however, potential health effects due to chronic exposure have not been explored yet. Legislation controlling vehicle emissions has been credited with a general downward trend in NO x (NO 2 +NO) concentrations in Europe since the 1990's. However, recent studies suggest that traffic (roadside) (TR) NO 2 concentrations have not decreased as expected, and in some cases increased, most likely due to the use of oxidation catalysts and particle filters in diesel vehicles (EURO III, IV, V, VI). In this study we describe the time trends in NO x , NO 2 and NO concentrations in 9 European cities comparing TR and urban background (UB) monitoring locations. In each city, we collected hourly city-specific NO x , NO, and NO 2 data from one TR and one UB monitoring site for each year. We describe hourly, weekly, seasonal and inter-annual patterns for periods corresponding to the implementation dates of various EURO vehicle emission standards regulating NO x emissions. The diurnal patterns in all 9 cities strongly reflected morning and evening traffic. In addition, lower weekend concentrations were observed. The NO x concentrations from the TR sites remain unchanged in the majority of the cities over the study period. When stratified by 3 time periods according to the implementation of the EURO standards, an increasing NO 2 /NO x ratio in 7/9 cities with time was noted. However, over the same time period the NO/NO 2 ratio decreased in 8/9 cities. A permanent inversion of the NO/NO 2 ratio was observed to occur in 2003 in 5/9 cities. Our analyses of temporal and diurnal patterns of NO x in European cities show reductions in concentrations consistent with reductions in primary emissions likely arising from the implementation of successive EURO standards. The generally constant or increasing NO 2 concentrations in the majority of the cities assessed over the study period underline the need of further regulative measures to meet the air quality standards and consequently to minimise adverse effects on human health. Abstract: Shipping emissions are currently increasing and will most likely continue to do so in the future due to the increase of global-scale trade. Ship emissions have the potential to contribute to air quality degradation in coastal areas, in addition to contributing to global air pollution. With the aim to quantify the impacts of shipping emissions on urban air quality in coastal areas in Europe, an in depth literature review was carried out focussing on particulate matter and gaseous pollutants but also reviewing the main chemical tracers of shipping emissions, the particle size distribution of ship-derived particulates and their contributions to population exposure and atmospheric deposition. Mitigation strategies were also addressed. In European coastal areas, shipping emissions contribute with 1–7% of ambient air PM10 levels, 1–14% of PM2.5, and at least 11% of PM1. Contributions from shipping to ambient NO2 levels range between 7 and 24%, with the highest values being recorded in the Netherlands and Denmark. Impacts from shipping emissions on SO2 concentrations were reported for Sweden and Spain. Shipping emissions impact not only the levels and composition of particulate and gaseous pollutants, but may also enhance new particle formation processes in urban areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Wildfires produce a significant release of gases and particles affecting climate and air quality. In the Mediterranean region, shrublands significantly contribute to burned areas and may show specific emission profiles. Our objective was to depict and quantify the primary-derived aerosols and precursors of secondary particulate species released during shrubland experimental fires, in which fire-line intensity values were equivalent to those of moderate shrubland wildfires, by using a number of different methodologies for the characterization of organic and inorganic compounds in both gas-phase and particulate-phase. Emissions of PM mass, particle number concentrations and organic and inorganic PM x components during flaming and smouldering phases were characterized in a field shrubland fire experiment. Our results revealed a clear prevalence of K+ and SO4 2− as inorganic ions released during the flaming–smouldering processes, accounting for 68–80% of the inorganic soluble fraction. During the residual-smouldering phases, in addition to K+ and SO4 2−, Ca2+ was found in significant amounts probably due the predominance of re-suspension processes (ashes and soil dust) over other emission sources during this stage. Concerning organic markers, the chromatograms were dominated by phenols, n-alkanals and n-alkanones, as well as by alcohol biomarkers in all the PM x fractions investigated. Levoglucosan was the most abundant degradation compound with maximum emission factors between 182 and 261 mg kg−1 in PM2.5 and PM10 respectively. However, levoglucosan was also observed in significant amounts in the gas-phase. The most representative organic volatile constituents in the smoke samples were alcohols, carbonyls, acids, monocyclic and bicyclic arenes, isoprenoids and alkanes compounds. The emission factors obtained in this study may contribute to the validation and improvement of national and international emission inventories of this intricate and diffuse emission source. Abstract: An artificial neural network (ANN) was developed and tested to forecast PM10 daily concentration in two contrasted environments in NE Spain, a regional background site (Montseny), and an urban background site (Barcelona-CSIC), which was highly influenced by vehicular emissions. In order to predict 24-h average PM10 concentrations, the artificial neural network previously developed by Caselli et al. (2009) was improved by using hourly PM concentrations and deterministic factors such as a Saharan dust alert. In particular, the model input data for prediction were the hourly PM10 concentrations 1-day in advance, local meteorological data and information about air masses origin. The forecasted performance indexes for both sites were calculated and they showed better results for the regional background site in Montseny (R2 =0.86, SI=0.75) than for urban site in Barcelona (R2 =0.73, SI=0.58), influenced by local and sometimes unexpected sources. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis conducted to understand the importance of the different variables included among the input data, showed that local meteorology and air masses origin are key factors in the model forecasts. This result explains the reason for the improvement of ANN's forecasting performance at the Montseny site with respect to the Barcelona site. Moreover, the artificial neural network developed in this work could prove useful to predict PM10 concentrations, especially, at regional background sites such as those on the Mediterranean Basin which are primarily affected by long-range transports. Hence, the artificial neural network presented here could be a powerful tool for obtaining real time information on air quality status and could aid stakeholders in their development of cost-effective control strategies. Abstract: An intensive monitoring campaign was carried out in the harbor of Barcelona (Spain) to quantify the contribution of primary shipping emissions (PSE) on PM10. Chemical composition of inorganic species, as well as OC and EC, was completed, and a source apportionment analysis by Positive Matrix Factorization was conducted. Among the 6 sources extracted, two were linked to harbor emissions: dusty materials released in different areas along the harbor and fuel–oil combustion. On average, harbor emissions accounted for 31% of the PM10 mass. Since the chemical signature of PSE was not determined neither their contribution was obtained, additional approaches were followed and mainly consisted in: 1) the evaluation of V/Ni and V/Cu ratios to identify those days affected by PSE; 2) the identification of the chemical components increasing under the influence of PSE; 3) the calculation of the daily and average PSE from their experimentally-determined chemical signature and the experimental concentrations of vanadium. As a result, the contribution of PSE was estimated in 0.84μgm−3 (2.7% of PM10) and the residual fuel–oil combustion factor (3.6μgm−3, 12% of PM10) was interpreted as aged shipping emissions. The present study splits the contribution of shipping emissions into primary and aged, and highlights the importance of atmospheric mixing and aging processes in western Mediterranean atmospheres. In the case of shipping emissions, the aged products were found to be dominant with respect to the primary ones even in the vicinity of the source. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An atmospheric aerosol study was performed in 2008 inside an urban road tunnel, in Lisbon, Portugal. Using a high volume impactor, the aerosol was collected into four size fractions (PM0.5, PM0.5–1, PM1 – 2.5 and PM2.5 – 10) and analysed for particle mass (PM), organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), soluble inorganic ions and elemental composition. Three main groups of compounds were discriminated in the tunnel aerosol: carbonaceous, soil component and vehicle mechanical wear. Measurements indicate that Cu can be a good tracer for wear emissions of road traffic. Cu levels correlate strongly with Fe, Mn, Sn and Cr, showing a highly linear constant ratio in all size ranges, suggesting a unique origin through sizes. Ratios of Cu with other elements can be used to source apportion the trace elements present in urban atmospheres, mainly on what concerns coarse aerosol particles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Forest fire emissions modify the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the earth''s climate system. The Ayoraburning experiment was designed to assess and quantify fire emissions from Mediterranean shrublands. A number of gaseous pollutants and particulate matter metrics (CO2, CO, CH4, PM2.5) were measured during 3 burning replicates by using real-time monitors. Quantification of carbon emissions released during the experiments showed that 71% was CO2, 26% CO, 3% CH4, and only 0.3% was particulate carbon. Emission factors obtained for CO2, CO and CH4 were 1257 ± 40, 453 ± 28 and 46 ± 12 g kg−1 dry matter, respectively, and combustion efficiencies ranged from 0.46 to 0.99. The experiments allowed the estimation of carbon emission in the different fire phases. Thus, 25% of carbon was sampled in the flaming phase and 75% of C in the smoldering phase. Current natural greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventories in Mediterranean countries underestimate the actual emissions from forest fires since they do not consider forest shrub understory and shrublands and since they assume that the CO2 emitted is offset by forest re-growth. Abstract: In spite of the high air quality and health relevance of PM emissions from road dust resuspension in large cities, very little is known on their temporal variability, severely hampering a reliable description of population exposure by dispersion models. We have experimentally monitored the mobile dust load (only inhalable fraction) in two different European urban environments resulting in the first empirical description of the temporal variation of road dust emission strength. In Central (The Netherlands) and Southern (Spain) European environments the loadings of mobile road dust particles <10 μm were found to be generally constant on a day-to-day scale, except during and in the hours immediately after rain events when the mobility of particles drops dramatically to values close to zero. After the rain event the mobile dust load increases exponentially tending to reach again the maximum value, result of the equilibrium between mobilization/buildup of dust and moistening/resuspension processes. The mobilization/buildup of particles smaller than 10 μm was found to be three times faster in Barcelona than in Utrecht, in relation to higher solar radiation. In Barcelona the recovery of mobile road dust reached 50%, 75%, and 90% of the maximum value after 8, 16 and 27 h, respectively. These values were independent of amounts of rain. In Utrecht the same thresholds were reached after, 28, 55 and 90 h, respectively. Our observations may suggest that, for reducing road dust emissions, light but frequent moistening of roads might be more effective than intensive occasional cleanings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Urban NH3 concentrations were mapped in Barcelona (Spain) by means of passive samplers (dosimeters). Average NH3 levels were 9.5 μg m−3 in summer and 4.4 μg m−3 in winter, higher than those reported in other urban background sites in Europe, this being especially notable in summer. During this season, values were significantly higher at urban background than at traffic sites, probably indicating the impact of emissions from biological sources, such as humans, sewage systems and garbage containers. Thus, the volatilization of NH3 from the aerosol phase seems to be significant enough during summer to dominate over traffic emissions. Conversely, in winter levels were higher at traffic sites, suggesting a contribution from vehicle emissions. Indeed, NH3 levels decreased by 55% with increasing distance (50 m) to the direct emissions from traffic. A significant correlation between NH3 concentrations averaged for the different districts of the city and the number of waste containers per hm2 was also obtained, highlighting the necessity for controlling and reducing the emissions from garbage collection systems. The urban topography of the Barcelona historical city centre, characterised by narrow streets with a high population density, seemed to exert a strong influence on NH3 levels, with levels reaching up to 30 μg m−3 as a consequence of limited dispersion and ventilation conditions. The impact of the sewage system emissions was also detected with an increase of levels when measuring immediately above the source, even though further studies are required to evaluate the relevance of these emissions. Abstract: The abatement capacity of trace inorganic elements was studied in a large Pulverized Coal Combustion (PCC) power plant equipped with a wet limestone Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) system. High proportions of most elements were retained as fly ash as consequence of the efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator (ESP, 99.6% of fly ash) and slag (11%). The most volatile elements, such as S and F are retained by the FGD gypsum, and Cl by the filtered water; whereas the moderately volatile elements, As and B, are retained mainly by fly ash, reaching very high abatement efficiencies for these elements when considering the whole plant (>92%). Selenium and Hg are still retained by the whole system with relatively high proportions (89% and 67%); however a prominently proportion is emitted; Se (11%) and Hg (29%), attaining gaseous/PM rate at the emissions reaching 0.08 and 290, respectively. The gaseous emissions are below the limits according to the European directive 2001/80/EC for large combustion plants and the PRTR threshold values with the exception of Hg emissions and particulate Se, As, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cr. Remediation actions to prevent and/or reduce the gaseous and PM emissions as well as the determination of leachable potential of trace inorganic pollutants retained in FGD gypsum, especially F in view of its disposal, are of significant relevance. Abstract: The primary aim of this study was to quantify the contribution of road dust to airborne particulate matter (PM10) and evaluate the effects of street washing on the mitigation of resuspension. With this purpose an intensive campaign was carried out in a heavily trafficked central road of Madrid (Spain) including PM10 sampling and chemical analysis. PM10 daily levels during dry, unwashed conditions were 2–15% higher than those present during the day after nightly street washing. However, this reduction is lower than the standard deviation of the PM10 measurements. The diurnal variation of PM10 revealed that a reduction in PM10 was noticeable only during the morning hours. The emission sources for the urban area of Madrid were resolved by means of a receptor model, Positive Matrix Factorization, PMF. The results showed that the main sources were vehicle emissions, road dust, secondary aerosol including sulphate and nitrate, and soil. Vehicle emissions and road dust were the major contributor to PM10 particle mass with similar average contributions of 31% and 29% respectively. The effect of street washing was also evaluated by examining the daily variation of the road dust source contribution between days with and without street washing. The mass contribution from the road dust source was ∼2 μg m−3 lower during the days that street washing was implemented with this corresponding to a reduction of 15% of its mass contribution during the days that the road surface was left untreated. The physical characterisation of metrics representative of ambient air particle concentration is becoming a topic of great interest for urban air quality monitoring and human exposure assessment. In this article, the influence of sea breeze circulation and primary road traffic emissions on the relationship between the urban aerosol number (N3, particles >3nm), black carbon <10μm (BC), PM1, PM2.5, PM2.5–10 (PMx) concentrations was studied in a coastal city (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands). The daily cycles of sea and mountain breezes (inland during daylight and seaward at night) and road traffic emissions exerted a great, and well differentiated, influence on the BC, N3 and PMx concentrations. In this scenario, the following major aerosol features were observed: (1) fresh vehicle exhaust emissions resulted in high BC and N3 concentrations, in such a way that these two metrics increased when the “road traffic intensity (vehiclesh−1)/wind speed” ratio increased, (2) PM1 and PM2.5 levels were lower during daylight (due to inland entry of relatively clean marine air masses) than at night (due to the seaward drainage airflow resulting in the transport of aged particulate pollutants from the city), (3) although N3 and BC concentrations exhibited a significant correlation during the whole study period, the N3/BC ratio experienced a daily evolution with a maximum during daylight. Thus, high N3 concentrations associated with high N3/BC ratios and high solar irradiance conditions were recorded during the daylight inland breeze period due to an enhancement of processes favouring new particle formation. Data analysis points out that this enhancement in the new particle formation processes is strongly related to the nucleation of photo-oxidized vapours under the relatively low PMx (and consequently low aerosol surface area) concentrations prompted by the inland entry of clean marine air due to the daylight breeze blowing. The results obtained show that, in addition to the vehicle exhaust emissions, new particle formation in coastal urban areas due to photo-oxidation processes may significantly contribute to the ultrafine particle concentration.
