The present paper describes a holistic energy efficient retrofit of low income multiple social housing located in Athens, Greece. A holistic analysis was conducted in order to determine the optimum retrofit plan that includes innovative and state of the art commercially available technologies, passive techniques as well as renewable energy sources, aiming to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint, improve indoor environmental conditions and be cost effective at the same time. An extensive experimental campaign including air leakage measurements, thermal imaging, energy consumption and indoor environmental quality measurements was conducted before and after the implementation of the retrofit. In addition, advanced building simulation, occupant surveys and socioeconomic analyses were performed in order to evaluate the impact of the retrofit and estimate specific performance indicators. The contribution of daylight to energy efficient building design and to the creation of a pleasant environment that provides visual comfort to its users has been a subject of study for years. This paper addresses the way in which daylight can be efficiently used in a typical classroom in Athens, Greece, by improving its distribution in the space and providing shade. Based on the conclusions drawn from the literature review, the system that is chosen for study consists of a light shelf (for shading and light redirection) and semi-transparent movable external blinds (for more shading, adjusted to the occupants’ needs), which are mounted on the glazing of a south-facing classroom. The experimental study consists of six stages, all performed in Radiance software. The individual results and conclusions lead to the definition of the optimum characteristics of the system, including the light shelf's width, mounting height, inclination and reflection index, which upgrade the daylight performance in the space under study. The use of cool materials for heat island mitigation has gained a lot of interest during the past few years. Cool materials are characterized by high solar reflectance and infrared emittance values. To maximize cooling energy savings, high albedo roof coatings should maintain the above properties for the service life of the coating. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the weatherisation of the cool roofs in two buildings in Athens Greece. The optical properties of the aged and new cool roofs are measured and compared. The impact of ageing in the two buildings’ energy performance is estimated. A mineralogical analysis is performed in order to quantify the deposition of pollutants on the cool roofs’ surface. In addition, a series of microbiological tests are implemented to reveal the impact of ageing and weatherisation in health. In both school roofs the surface temperature has a significant decrease between the part of the existing cool coating and the application of the new part with a temperature difference reached reaching 7–12 K. Abstract: This paper describes an effort to estimate the impact of a cool roof (characterised by increased solar reflectance compared to the initial roof and high infrared emittance) on the energy performance and thermal behaviour of a non-cooled school building in Athens, Greece. An experimental monitoring campaign has been carried out before and after the application of a white elastomeric coating with a solar reflectance of 0.89 on the roof of the building. The air and surface temperature of the building have been measured and a set of meteorological parameters have been collected. An infrared camera has been used to depict the differences in the surface temperature before and after the cool roof application. The monitoring results are complemented and supported by building simulation. The building has been modelled into TRNSYS software and the model has been calibrated and validated using the experimental data. Simulation results show a decrease in the air temperature in the classes that reaches 2.8°C and a decrease in the annual cooling load by 40%. The corresponding heating penalty (i.e. the increase of heating load) is 10%. Additionally, the impact of the cool roof on thermal comfort, peak power and surface temperature has been assessed.
