We propose a heterogeneous thirteen-core few-mode fiber, which has the excellent characteristics of low crosstalk (XT), large effective mode field area (A e f f) and low dispersion slope (D s l o p e). The double high refractive index ring can precisely control the effective refractive index difference between the LP mode in the core and reduce intra-core XT. The relative spatial efficiency (RSE) of the 13-core 6-mode fiber reaches 33.84, and the number of spatial channels is as high as 130. The inter-core crosstalk is less than −60 dB/km at 1550 nm. The results show that the proposed fiber with low crosstalk and large A e f f is sufficient to satisfy the requirements of long-distance transmission in the future. • A heterogeneous 13-core 6-mode fiber is proposed to reduce inter-core crosstalk while enhancing bending resistance. • Heterogeneous core arrangement can increase the propagation constant difference between adjacent cores. • The maximum differential mode delay for the highest order mode (LP 12) and LP 01 mode is 28 ps/m. • The number of spatial channels of 13-core 6-mode fiber based on space division multiplexing is as high as 130. Continuous Fibre composite 3D printing (CF-3DP) technology is a newly developed Additive Manufacturing (AM) process. By employing continuous fibre as a reinforcement for the composite, the mechanical properties of the 3D printed part can be significantly improved. However, owing to the process's early stage of development, the mechanical performance of the printed material is still unable to compete with composites produced using conventional manufacturing processes. This can manly be attributed to lower fibre volume fractions and/or higher void content. The grand objective of the research project is to establish a demonstrator of practical applications, and in this paper, preparatory developments were carried out to pave the ground for the subsequent developments, including feedstock materials development, printing process development, and materials properties evaluation. Efforts has been made to increase fibre volume fracture, to reduce voids contents, to evaluate effective properties systematically. The static mechanical test results showed relatively good longitudinal tensile properties while matrix sensitive properties were low, as to be expected in UD composites with a relatively weak matrix material. The advantage of CF-3DP is to achieve fibre steering, and the steered fibre design can be achieved by the current process to realize novel composite structures in future study. In recent years, three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has developed to include composite materials. Most of the development to date in this area has involved particulate or short fibre reinforced composites, whilst continuous fibre printing remains a relatively novel research area. This review paper focuses on the state-of-the-art of continuous fibre reinforced 3DP technology (CF-3DP). The materials and devices being used in the current studies are reviewed, and the different processing methods are discussed in detail. A thorough summary of the mechanical properties is provided. Despite improvements compared to 3D printed pure plastics, the performance of current continuous fibre 3D printed composites are not yet in a position to compete with conventionally processed composites due to defects and low fibre volume fraction. Finally, an overview of current potential applications are presented. However, challenges still remain in materials and process development. New design, modelling and analysis methods are needed before these novel composite structures can find their optimal applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• MMF is added to the NPR mode-locked to realize the evolution of the soliton bunch to the DSR pulse. • The controlled experiments with SMF-PC show that soliton pairs and the automatic evolution be generated by using MMF-PC. • Multiple longitudinal mode oscillation pulses are found. • By the MMF-PC and NPR mode-locked, the dual-wavelength mode locking is realized. Passively mode locked fiber lasers (PML-FLs) can produce a variety of phenomena due to the nonlinear effects. With the introduction of the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) and a multimode fiber polarization controller (MMF-PC), we observed nonlinear effects in our erbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser, such as the evolution of the soliton bunch to dissipates soliton resonance (DSR) pulses. In the evolution of the soliton bunch to DSR pulses, the soliton square bunch and the multi-longitudinal mode oscillation also appeared in our experiment with the increasing the pump power. To illustrate the importance of MMF-PC, a control experiment is conducted by replacing the MMF-PC with a single mode fiber PC (SMF-PC). The experimental results indicate that the MMF-PC are crucial for the evolution of soliton pairs to DSR pulses and the generation of soliton pairs. The NPR mode-locked structure is used to achieve dual-wavelength filtering, its strength-dependent non-uniform loss can effectively suppress the mode competition in the gain fibers. The MMF-PC in the mode-locked structure adds a polarization burned hole effect inside the resonator. We achieved dual-wavelength mode locking by adjusting the PC to control the birefringence and loss in the resonator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A wide bandwidth and short-length polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed based on the tellurite glass dual hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (DHC-ARF). Four circular cladding tubes are introduced in the x-axis direction to form two hollow cores. The modal coupling is realized through the gap between the two hollow cores. The nested tubes are inserted into the cladding tubes between the two hollow cores for realizing ultrawide bandwidth. The bandwidth covers the communication wavelength of 1.31 µm and 1.55 µm. The advantage of the proposed PBS is that the beam splitter length is 2.122 cm, The operation bandwidth is 400 nm (1.26–1.66 µm), where the power extinction ratio is below − 20 dB. An ultra-bandwidth and single-mode polarization beam splitter (PBS) of dual hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (DHC-ARF) with circular outer tubes and inner tubes is proposed. Four outer tubes are introduced in the horizontal direction to obtain two hollow cores. The modal coupling is realized through the gap between the two hollow cores. The inner tubes also are inserted into two the outer tubes between the two hollow cores for realizing ultrawide bandwidth in DHC-ARF. To achieve single-mode performance, the high-order modes are coupled with the cladding modes by optimizing the diameter of outer tubes and the inner tubes. The calculation results show that an 11.0 cm long DHC-ARF can be used to develop a PBS with an operating bandwidth of 410 nm, where the polarization extinction ratio is lower than −20 dB. The high-order mode extinction ratio is 625.41, and the loss of fundamental mode is below 1.018 dB/m. • Because the size of elliptical tubes is hard to fabricate, an ultra-bandwidth and single-mode PBS of DHC-ARF completely composed of circular cladding tubes and nested tubes is proposed in the structures. • The influence factors related to bandwidth, the high-order mode extinction ratio and coupling length of PBS based on DHC-ARF are systematically studied by a full-vector finite element method. • The propagation process of light in the optical fiber is also simulated by the light speed propagation method. When the light travels to a certain distance, the two polarized lights will be separated. • Numerical simulation shows an 11.0 cm long DHC-ARF can be used to develop a PBS with an operating bandwidth of 410 nm ranging from 1.35 to 1. 76 μ m , where the polarization extinction ratio reaches −39.0 dB, the high-order mode extinction ratio is 625.41. • The PBS based on DHC-ARF with circular cladding tubes and nested tubes proposed in this paper compares the performance with other existing PBS, this PBS has the widest bandwidth. The four wave mixing (FWM) characteristics of highly nonlinear tellurite photonic crystal fiber are simulated. The material of tellurite fiber is TeO 2 -Li 2 O-ZnO-P 2 O 5 (TLZP). It is calculated that there are two zero dispersion points at 1590 nm and 3880 nm in tellurite photonic crystal fiber. The linear phase mismatch, the variation of optical signal gain with fiber length and the pump power are calculated at 1538 nm and 3865 nm respectively. The results show that the fiber has good four wave mixing performance near 1550 nm communication window and mid infrared region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multi-core few-mode fiber based on space division multiplexing technology is one of the critical ways to address the issue that the current single-mode fiber communication capacity has reached its maximum. However, the energy crosstalk between the cores is an important reason for the deterioration of signal quality. Consequently, this paper designs a nineteen-core seven-mode fiber with more transmission channels, and the auxiliary structures such as trench, high and low refractive index double rings, and air holes can effectively reduce intra-core crosstalk and inter-core crosstalk. After optimization, each core of the nineteen-core fiber can transmit seven LP modes, and the effective refractive index difference between adjacent modes is greater than or equal to 10−3. The optical fiber provides 228 transmission channels for the entire transmission system, the inter-core crosstalk of the highest order LP 41 mode is lower than −30 dB/100 km at 1550 nm. Based on the above, the proposed optical fiber has excellent optical properties and can be applied to data centers, optical sensors, high-speed computer communication networks, and other applications. The comprehensive design feasibility for woven composites has been established by identifying the missing component in the design tool for these materials, the so-called controllable parameters. These are the parameters that are involved, directly or indirectly, in manufacturing of woven preforms, and they include the tow densities, the number and the size of filaments in a tow and intra-tow fibre volume fractions. Controllable parameters have been related through a simple procedure to the conventional geometric parameters of woven composites, which eliminates the need for their costly, inefficient, and often unreliable measurements. The controllable parameters provide sufficient representation of woven geometry in terms of both modelling and manufacture, thus offering common terminology to the woven composite designers and manufacturers. This also allows to naturally involve the practical considerations and manufacturing restrictions in material design exercises. With controllable parameters being incorporated in woven composite design framework, a direct analogy can be drawn to classical lamination theory-based design for conventional laminates. The wide applicability of the design tool has been demonstrated via a series of systematic material characterisation exercises carried out with woven composites of sufficiently different internal architectures and constituents, which also showed good predictive capability of the models involved.
