For the lack of historical water ecology monitoring data and the limitations of traditional morphology-based water ecology reconstruction methods, the response mechanism of lake phytoplankton to climate change in the Tibetan Plateau remains unclear. In this study, we reconstructed the succession of phytoplankton community in Lake Gyaring, located in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, since the 6th century by using sediment DNA metabarcoding. We found that the diversity and structure succession stages of phytoplankton community were consistent with the global temperature oscillation events, namely, the Medieval Warm Period (800–1300 CE). Little Ice Age (1300–1850 CE) and Current Warm Period (1850–2000 CE). The community structure dominated by Chlorophyta in the Medieval Warm Period gradually changed to that dominated by Bacillariophyta in the Little Ice Age. However, the Current Warm Period did not observe the dominant community structure of Chlorophyta similar to that of the Medieval Warm Period. This finding may be due to the climate change of the Current Warm Period was influenced by multiple human activities, such as increased anthropogenic aerosols, which promoted obvious weakening of the intensity of the summer monsoon, leading to decreased soil erosion and lake mixing, and thus may trigger a strikingly different aquatic ecosystem compared to that during the Medieval Warm Period. The Caucasus region lacks climate-sensitive chronologies that are continuous, high-resolution and covering more than several centuries at the same time. This paper presents the first high-resolution curve reflecting the variations of heat availability in the Western Caucasus over the past 1500 years. The chronology of bottom sediment of Lake Karakel is based on the two precisely overlapped sediment cores, constrained by ten 14C dates with a temporal resolution of around 3 years. Bromine content in the sediment is interpreted as a proxy for variations of heat availability based on its coherence with the broadleaved tree pollen content in the same deposits. Lake Karakel Br curve showed distinct agreement with hemispheric and regional temperature reconstructions starting from 500 CE, as well as with the tree-ring temperature reconstructions available for the Caucasus. It allowed a constraint of the time frames for the main climatic events in the Western Caucasus during the past 1500 years: Medieval Climate Anomaly (ca. 960–1270 CE) and Little Ice Age with its three separate stages (LIA 1 ca. 1270–1310 and 1370–1410; LIA 2 ca. 1500–1630; LIA 3 ca. 1750–1840). The central sector of the Ebro Depression is characterized by an abundance of isolated buttes with relict talus flatiron morphologies and block slopes on the footslopes. This paper presents two unusual study cases where the block slopes are aligned in parallel with the retreating escarpment. The evolutionary process of both buttes started with the formation of talus flatirons and ended with aligned block slopes. This is because both buttes initially had a detrital caprock (Pleistocene pediment) which eroded away to expose a sandstone layer that functioned as a new caprock and so changed the slope dynamics. Seven stages were identified at La Cobeta butte and five at Puyalón butte. The relative ages obtained for stages II and IV enabled an estimation of the escarpment retreat rates. The chronologies of the other stages of block alignments were estimated using Schmidt-hammer rebound values. The estimated age of the stage II (ca. 6588-6222 cal yr BP) coincides with three radiocarbon datings obtained in the deposit. Stage III (ca. 4235-3684 cal yr BP) is contemporary with the 4.2 Bond event. Stage IV (ca. 2800-2500 cal yr BP) coincides with the 2.8 Bond event and is associated with ceramic potsherds and radiocarbon datings. Stages V and VI developed during the Warm Roman period and the Medieval Climatic Anomaly respectively. Lastly, stage VII was formed during the Little Ice Age. Dynamic fluctuations in sea surface temperature within the North Atlantic Ocean (NA-SST) exert a pivotal influence on global climate change. Yet, the specific impacts of these variations on the temperature shifts within the Qinling-Bashan Mountains (QBM) of China, remain to be fully elucidated. Furthermore, a debate surrounding the manifestation of the Little Ice Age (LIA) within the QBM is ongoing, primarily due to the scarcity of reliable, long-term, and high-resolution temperature records. To bridge these knowledge gaps, in this paper, we present a ∼ 250-year temperature reconstruction (Tmax 11 – 7) developed based on a tree-ring-width chronology from the QBM. The new reconstruction not only aligns with a local winter temperature reconstruction based on historical document evidence, but also reveals robust regional and hemispheric temperature signals. Intriguingly, the study shows that the warming trend observed in the QBM since the Industrial Era is less pronounced than that witnessed across China and the Northern Hemisphere. The Tmax 11 – 7 reconstruction provides a glimpse into the final stages of the LIA, highlighting a relatively colder 19 th century followed by a warmer 20 th century. Notably, the warming trend post-1970s remains within the bounds of the 250-year temperature framework. The research further uncovers that NA-SST has predominantly governed the QBM's temperature fluctuations over the past centuries, as evidenced by the tight positive correlation between Atlantic multidecadal Oscillation (AMO)/Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) and Tmax 11 – 7. However, this dominant influence of NA-SST was temporarily subdued between 1900 and 1930 CE due to the interference of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). This finding serves as a reminder that future temperature projections for the QBM must account not only for the primary role of NA-SST but also the modulating effects of the PDO. Floods are one of the gravest natural hazards for societies, worsened by population growth, unchecked development, and climate change. From a Global Change perspective, past extreme events merit particular interest because they can be linked to wider climate and environmental changes, introduce perturbations. During the last decade, knowledge of long-term flood frequency and magnitude has been improved by extracting data from different types of archive. But, despite advances in dating methods, proxies and statistical techniques and efforts to identify atmospheric drivers, some fundamental questions remain unresolved. The Special Issue entitled "Pluridisciplinary analysis and multi-archive reconstruction of paleofloods" in the journal Global and Planetary Change addresses these uncertainties and complexities by assembling a selection of studies, which were first presented at the Past Climate Changes (PAGES) Open Scientific Meeting held at Zaragoza in 2017. In this introductory paper, the guest editors outline the 17 research contributions and meta-data from the 17 paleoflood studies were systematically analyzed in terms of i) geographical distribution; ii) methodologies applied; iii) types of archives; iii) numbers of flood series compiled and iv) spatial and temporal resolution of paleoflood data. The data indicate that paleoflood studies focused on fluvial depositional environments show a higher rate of integration with other types of paleoflood archive (mean of 4.5 types of archive) than studies focused on documentary sources (mean of 3.5) and lake sediments (mean of 2.4). We suggest that this strategy of archive integration has been adapted to effectively compensate for the higher uncertainties of fluvial deposition in floodplains. Statistical processing of the meta-data shows quantitative associations between specific types of flood archive and offers a solid platform for designing the optimal approach for multi-archive paleoflood research. A qualitative review and visual comparison of the 17 paleoflood series shows some consistent trends and breaks but also notable differences within and between regions. While a trend of increased flooding since 4-5 ka BP is evident, the lack of synchronicity between breaks and the coeval increases and decreases in fluvial activity is manifest. The majority of studies in the Special Issue do denote the 19th century – including the youngest cool climate pulses during the Little Ice Age – as a particularly flood-rich period. It is more difficult to assess the 20th century because of social changes, population growth and extensive river modification. Despite the mentioned uncertainties, 10 of 14 papers do not record the 20th century as an exceptional flood period. Assessing the effects of human impact on paleoflood calendars and disentangling anthropogenic from natural drivers are major challenges in integrated paleoflood analysis. It is concluded that the interpretation of flood series is complex as landscapes and flood drivers are heterogeneous and systems show different sensitivities to flood control and drivers. Mountain glaciers are one of the most sensitive indicators of climate change. Reconstructing past glacier extents provides valuable insights into the climate change for specific regions where instrumental records are not enough and even absent. In the paper we mapped the outlines for 691 Little Ice Age (LIA) glaciers in terms of prominent moraines beyond contemporary glaciers in the Tanggula Mountains, central Tibetan Plateau (TP). Based on these glacier outlines, we reconstructed the ice thicknesses and surfaces for the LIA glaciers in the region. Accordingly, we calculated the equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) for contemporary and LIA glaciers. By comparing the ELAs between the contemporary and LIA glaciers, we estimated the LIA summer temperature decreases in different subregions of the Tanggula Mountains. Since the LIA, the ELA have risen by 35.6 ± 18.8 m, 26.1 ± 17.6 m, and 63.1 ± 38.6 m in the respective western, central, and eastern subregions of the Tanggula Mountains. Assuming no change in precipitation, the LIA summer temperature would decrease by 0.22 ± 0.12 °C, 0.14 ± 0.09 °C, and 0.34 ± 0.21 °C in the three subregions, respectively. Moreover, glaciers in the western, central, and eastern subregions have lost 13.3%, 23.9%, and 42.8% of their area, 15.4%, 25.3%, and 39.6% of their length, and 20.8%, 39.0%, and 61.0% of their volume, respectively. By compiling the LIA ELA data from previous studies, we also estimated the LIA summer temperature changes for other regions of the TP. This paper reconstructs the relative sea level (RSL) and palaeoclimate of the northern coasts of the Persian Gulf (PG) during the last 16 centuries using physiochemical and ecological proxies from a radiocarbon-dated sediment core from the Nayband Bay (NB) estuary. The results show that between 1600 and 1150 cal yr BP, the NB was a marine lagoon with high river discharge, indicated by low organic matter content sandy silt sediments, high foraminiferal abundance (7900 tests per 10 cm3), and balanced agglutinated and hyaline taxa. During the Medieval Warm Period, the NB became a shallow lagoon, and consequently, a playa with high eolian input and low river discharge formed in the studied site that extended until 500 cal. yr BP. This condition is indicated by sediment finning trend, elevated magnetic susceptibility in sandy mud sediments, and low foraminiferal frequency dominated by hyaline taxa (mainly opportunist Ammonia beccarii). During the stillstand condition corresponding to 500–250 cal yr BP, the evolution of tidal channels in the area provided a platform for developing the upcoming mangrove habitat. In the last 250 years, RSL in the north of NB dropped enough to create a low-energy intertidal flat sheltered by a sandbar, which allowed mangrove growth. We conclude that the ecological and sedimentological evolution of the shallow marginal NB is mainly driven by eustatic RSL decline superimposed by local uplift. We suggest that the current orbitally-induced increasing insolation trend, enhanced by human-induced global warming, could increase aridity in the PG and the southern Zagros. • NB Estuary evolved from an open lagoon (1600–1150 cal yr BP) to a mash and mangrove (1150–250 cal yr BP) and ultimately mangrove (250–0 cal yr BP) due to the continuous RSL fall. • During the MWP and LIA, the southern Iranian Plateau experienced a warm-dry and wet-cold period, respectively. • The current orbitally-induced increasing insolation trend, enhanced by human-induced global warming, could enhance aridity in the PG and the southern Zagros. There is myriad evidence that global warming is exerting a profoundly disruptive influence on the lifeways of modern native (Yup'ik) communities living in the Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y-K) delta of southwestern Alaska. Yup'ik subsistence is intimately tied to seasonal change and the ability to accurately predict the availability of plant and animal resources. It therefore seems reasonable to suggest that periods of climatic instability such as the Little Ice Age (LIA) may have had a deleterious effect on Yup'ik communities in the past. However, at present there are no palaeotemperature records that document the localised climatic changes of the last millennium in the Y-K Delta region. This lack of data hinders our understanding of the archaeological record from the site of Nunalleq, which is situated at the heart of the delta and was occupied during the LIA. To address this oversight, this paper presents the results of a Coleoptera (beetle) based climate reconstruction from a peat profile in the vicinity of Nunalleq to investigate the magnitude of Late Holocene climatic changes. Using the Mutual Climatic Range (MCR) method, we reconstruct mean summer and winter temperatures from the mid-15th to late-19th centuries. The results indicate that the past environments of Nunalleq were characterised by a climate significantly cooler than the present. The earliest definitive evidence for Little Ice Age cooling dates from the late 16th century, when mean summer temperatures were at least 1.2ᵒC below the modern mean. Temperatures appear to have remained lower than modern until the early 19th century. The coolest Nunalleq record – 1.3ᵒC below the modern mean summer temperatures – is centred on AD 1815, after which there is evidence for climatic amelioration. These data present differences with observations from other regions of Alaska and underline the importance of more local palaeoclimate reconstructions, particularly when interrogating the relationships between past climatic and social change. Palaeoclimatic records from southern tip of South America during the Last Holocene, indicate important climate intervals, such as the Medieval Climate Anomaly and Little Ice Age, which offered new scenarios to hunter-gatherer groups who inhabited the region. The aim of this paper is to explore the social practices carried out by hunter-fisher-gatherer societies of the southern part of the Atlantic Coast of Tierra del Fuego island (53–55°S, 66–74°W) in order to deal with these environmental changes. From our perspective, foragers have played an active role in designing strategies to cope with environmental fluctuations. Consequently, we argue that in a context of ecological uncertainty, these societies would have developed flexible strategies in terms of subsistence, technology and settlement patterns. In order to test this proposal, zooarchaeological and technological analysis of different archaeological assemblages dated between the 1300 to 220 BP were undertaken. The results show that these hunter-fisher-gatherer societies exploited a broad range of faunal resources using a versatile technology which encompassed tools with low production values and high use values. Likewise, the analysis of landscape organization revealed a settlement strategy centered on the most productive habitats, which were preferentially reoccupied. This paper examines Neo-Inuit (ca. AD 1250 to present) responses to the decreased temperatures of the Little Ice Age (LIA) climate change episode (ca. AD 1300–1900) in the Foxe Basin region of central Nunavut, Arctic Canada. Cooler temperatures (and increased sea ice) would be expected to have reduced both bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) and Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) habitats, forcing Neo-Inuit to refocus their hunting activities on landfast-ice-dwelling small seals (e.g., Pusa hispida) during winter months. However, an analysis of faunal remains from Foxe Basin's largest-known Neo-Inuit (Thule, historic and modern Inuit) archaeological site, Pingiqqalik (NgHd-1), reveals a long-term subsistence economy based largely on multi-seasonal walrus hunting. Two interrelated factors may explain these results: (1) a system of recurring polynyas provided a degree of ecological stability for local walrus populations, and (2) the development of a distinctive walrus caching regime—a form of which continues among the region's contemporary Inuit—allowed residents to adeptly exploit an ecological niche, thereby ensuring food security. Diatom records in tropical settings have been used to appraise paleomonsoons throughout the Quaternary period due to their ubiquitous presence, rapid response, and preservation in sediments. Despite this, diatoms have been rarely used to assess the Asian monsoonal climate. As the Asian monsoon comprises the Indian and East Asian subsystems, it plays a significant role in global hydrological and energy cycles. Keeping global climate in mind, we reviewed the dynamics and causes of Asian monsoon variability (covering major records exclusive from the tropics) on different spatial and temporal scales using diatoms as a proxy record. The data have been compiled from 50 papers spanning fresh and marine sediment archives, covering entire monsoon regimes, predominantly from Southeast Asia. This study classified the data based on various geological periods ranging from the Pleistocene Epoch to the Holocene Meghalayan age (600 ka −300 a BP). Diatom proxies indicate fluctuating hydrological conditions and varying monsoon intensity throughout the Quaternary period and show regional scale coherence for specific climatic events. Diatom records from both inland and marine sediment archives indicate a wet and warm period during the mid–Pleistocene (590–300 kyr) and a cold climate and weakened East Asian monsoon during 300–140 kyr. Through the late Pleistocene period (75 to 15 kyr), monsoonal conditions were intense, wet and warm during the interglacial stages and weaker and dry during glacial stages across South and East Asia. During the Last Glacial Maximum (24.5–18 kyr), the monsoon significantly weakened with cold climatic conditions in southern Asia, and increased precipitation across East Asia. A majority of the published records witnessed an enhanced Asian monsoon and a warm and humid period towards the early to mid–Holocene, with a decline in the monsoon after the mid–Holocene accompanying intermittent intense wetter conditions. Diatom records from the sediment archives at many geographic locations hold signatures of extreme events such as the Younger Dryas cold event around 13.3–11.3 kyr BP, the Medieval Warm Period around 1.3 to 0.8 kyr, and the Little Ice Age in between 0.6 and 0.3 kyr. Further, we indicate that several sites from different monsoon-dominated geographic-climatic zones should be re-investigated with high resolution across spatial and temporal palaeoclimatic periods (including existing databases) with careful diatom taxonomy to strengthen a climatic reconstruction of this monsoon-dominated region of Asia. There is a general consensus that the increased frequency of extreme climatic events will quickly change the morphology of the landscapes in the Mediterranean area. Knowing and understanding the expected changes becomes crucial for defining future adaptive strategies. This paper deals with the very rapid geomorphological evolution in an emblematic Mediterranean area, the Basilicata region of southern Italy, during the last 300 years. The results show that the landscape evolution was mainly controlled by the extreme sensitivity of surface processes to climate change. Landslides, a new cycle of the formation of badland landforms such as calanchi and biancane, and an aggradation/incision phase in the main river valleys have completely reshaped the landscape of the Bradanic Trough, whereas fresh eroded material was moved to the coast. New data on valley-fill alluvium in the Basento River and one of its main left tributaries, the Vella stream, show ages ranging from 1700 to 1850. This deposition phase coincides with the Little Ice Age, an epoch of global climate variability. Previous literature showed that the alluvium of this age consists of a mappable stratigraphic unit outcropping in all the large alluvial valleys of the Basilicata and Mediterranean regions. Palaeoclimate and high-resolution palaeoflood data indicate that valley-fill alluviation occurred during a long humid period. Valley aggradation ended in approximately 1850 with the beginning of a new phase of historic arroyo cutting, mainly due to high magnitude-low frequency rainy events within prolonged drought periods. The stream incision drew the terminal dissection of the clayey slopes into biancana rounded morphologies. Abstract: Knowledge of the Little Ice Age (LIA) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is of critical importance for understanding the climate changes over the past millennium. However, the data associated with the extents and chronologies of TP LIA moraines are highly dispersed in literature. Lack of systematic integration of these data hampers us to further understand the nature of the LIA, especially from a perspective of whole TP. The paper reviews multiple types of dating on LIA moraines to examine the timing and nature of the LIA on the TP. These include ages of radiocarbon 14C, lichenometry, and cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN), by which we can cross-date the same or morphostratigraphically similar landforms. LIA moraines on the TP are usually present a few hundred to thousand meters beyond the contemporary glaciers. The morphological and stratigraphic evidence indicates multiple periods of glacier advance during the last millennium (LIA). At present, available chronology evidence allows to fully compare the timing of the LIA maximum extents. The glaciers reached and retreated from their LIA maximum extents by an asynchronous pattern between different parts of the TP. The majority of glaciers advanced to their LIA maximum extents at late-14th and early-14th century on the southern and northwestern TP, respectively. The glaciers retreated from their LIA maximum extents during 16th to early-18th, late-14th to early-15th and early-16th century on the southern, northwestern, and northeastern TP, respectively. In addition, the glacier advance period of late-18th to early-19th centuries and retreat period of late-19th century are common on the whole TP. Comparison with ice core records suggests that on the TP, the glacier fluctuations responded more strongly to temperature than to precipitation. By comparison of the LIA chronologies from a global perspective, this paper also concludes that the LIA maximum extents occurred commonly earlier on the TP than in North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere regions, despite of the variability in the timing of LIA maximum extents on the TP and in the North Atlantic regions. In this paper, the stratigraphic occurrence of n -alkanes (C n) is investigated in three peat cores (Mildred, JPH4 and McMurray) from the ombrotrophic peatlands in northeastern Alberta, Canada, to determine their origin, biomass input, and paleoclimatic significance. The molecular composition of n -alkanes is dominated by the >C 21 medium- to long-chain homologues, with a strong odd over even predominance. A number of n -alkane-based indices (e.g. predominant n -alkane, C 23 /C 29 , C 23 /(C 27 + C 31), P aq , ACL, and CPI), show changing conditions in the organic matter (OM) input from Sphagnum species or terrestrial vascular plants, which increasingly contributed upwards in the peat profiles, and through time. P aq and C 23 /(C 27 + C 31) proxies are similar in the three cores, and allow us to infer vegetation variations that coincide with the climate alternations of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP), Little Ice Age (LIA), and modern Recent Warming (RW). The utilization of ACL-ket and (C 23 + C 25)/(C 27 + C 29 + C 31)-ket proxies, performed in comparison with n -alkane proxies, further support the biomarker-based reconstructions of paleoclimate variations over recent centuries. This study suggests that n -alkane homologues are sensitive to vegetation and climate changes and thus are reliable biomarkers for tracking past shifts in vegetation and climate variations in peat archives. • Determine organic matter source of peat sediments from n -alkane biomarkers. • C 23 /(C 27 +C 31) n -alkane proxy is proposed and can effectively characterize climate changes. • P aq proxy indication could be misleading when the contribution of Sphagnum fuscum to the peat is large. • n -Alkan-2-one proxy is studied to further confirm the biomarker-based reconstruction of paleoclimatic changes. This paper presents the first results of the quantitative reconstruction of ice conditions in the Arctic based on a comparison of the data for periods of meteorological observations with variations in the chemical compositions of the sediments accumulated during the same times. The biogenic elements (Br, Ca, and Sr) and some redox-sensitive (As and Fe) elements are the most informative for the reconstruction of changes in ice conditions with positive correlations, and the lithogenic elements (K and Ti) are predominantly negatively correlated. The reconstruction results for the last 300–400 years of average annual air temperature anomalies for all cores in general terms coincide with the reconstruction for the Northern Hemisphere. The common features of all reconstructions are low temperatures during the Little Ice Age (LIA) and a rapid warming in the middle of the 19th century and in the last decades of the 20th and first decades of the 21st centuries. The results of the reconstruction of the duration of the ice-free period generally coincide with the temperature changes for the last two centuries, although for LIA there is an inverse correlation between the variations in temperature and the duration of the ice-free period. A possible reason for this may be changes in the structure of the surface currents in the Chukchi Sea and the northern part of the Bering Sea, because of which the inflow of warm and freshened waters through the Bering Strait to the Arctic increased occasionally. The vegetation history of the central Tibetan Plateau over the last two millennia provides an important baseline for exploring future vegetation evolution. In this paper, we analyze high-resolution records of pollen, grain-size, total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) for a 66.5 cm deep sediment core collected from Beilei Co on the central Tibetan Plateau. Between ca. 210 CE and 1988 CE, pollen spectra together with other proxies show that the Beilei Co region was covered by alpine steppe and experienced a relatively stable environment, with only slight changes in vegetation composition and minor climatic variations. However, since 1988 CE, abundances of Artemisia and Cyperaceae have begun to increase, while those of Chenopodiaceae (current accepted Latin name is Amaranthaceae) and Asteraceae have decreased sharply. Both the pollen assemblages and other proxies show that the study area is currently undergoing a major change and that the period of vegetation stability that has characterized the past two millenia has now ended. We argue that the recent changes in the vegetation may be caused by increasing precipitation and/or thawing permafrost due to global warming. In this paper, we undertake a high-resolution palynological analysis of a sediment core covering the last 1500 years obtained from Lake Ayakum in the northern Tibetan Plateau, to improve the understanding of regional climate fluctuations and their driving mechanisms. The pollen spectra are dominated by herbaceous species such as Artemisia , Chenopodiaceae, Cyperaceae and Poaceae, which grew in various alpine desert settings. Four pollen assemblage zones are identified using stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis, representing climate history at different stages. The Artemisia /Chenopodiaceae (A/C) ratio and axis score of the first principal component are used to infer regional moisture conditions and reveal a temporal pattern that is consistent with various records from central Asia. The source of Cyperaceae pollen is mainly from marsh wetlands distributed around the lake, which responded sensitively to the lake level fluctuations. In contrast, arboreal pollen is mainly a long-distance transported component, reflecting changes in regional vegetation. Our findings show that the northern Tibetan Plateau experienced relatively wet conditions during the Dark Age Cold Period and the Little Ice Age, while relatively dry conditions occurred during the Medieval Warm Period and the last two centuries. Fluctuations in moisture levels are broadly consistent with moisture records elsewhere in western China, and show a good correlation with phase changes of the North Atlantic Oscillation. This paper presents a 600-year well-dated, high-resolution Central Balkan paleo-record including the Little Ice Age (LIA; 1450–1850 CE). Utilizing pollen-based REVEALS modeling estimates, geochemical indicators, rarefaction analyses and the AMS 14 C-based Bacon age model, this first-hand record from the Sava Basin reveals the transformation of the Central Balkan landscape involving linkages between changing climatic and socio-political regimes. The pre-LIA interval (1370–1418 CE) in the Sava Region reveals a wooded steppe and increased cultivation under warmer/stable climatic and socio-political conditions. In contrast, the LIA interval in the region is expressed through continuous transitions between forest and grassland, extensive land erosion and stressed agriculture, potentially as a collective artifact of the climatic variability and human impact associated with socio-political stressors of the time. The post-LIA/Industrial Era interval (1850–2012 CE) in the Sava Region shows an overall increase in woodland as well as agriculture following the exit of the Ottomans. However, increased population pressures and the subsequent onset of the Industrial Revolution as well as increased trade led to intense deforestation throughout the 20 th century, which continued during the Socialist period. In this paper, we use δ 13 C and δ 15 N of serial samples of dentine collagen from archaeological springbok teeth as a novel high-resolution but short-term palaeoenvironmental proxy. Two adult and seven juvenile springbok ( Antidorcas marsupialis ) teeth from the archaeological site SK400 were analyzed. This site, located in the Namaqualand desert on the west coast of South Africa has yielded a large number of small-medium bovids, likely all springbok. These springbok were killed in a single episode between 1438 and 1641 CE, during the Little Ice Age (LIA). The juvenile springbok were significantly more depleted in 13 C and enriched in 15 N compared with the adults. During the four to six months over which their teeth developed, the juveniles consumed a higher proportion of C 3 plants and were exposed to greater aridity than the adults at equivalent ages. Based on dental wear, the adults are estimated to be between 3.5 and 7.5 years old at death, so the isotope values in their teeth record diet and environmental conditions several years earlier. In addition, the juveniles (but not the adults) show a trend towards more negative δ 13 C values and very high δ 15 N (up to + 18.9‰) during the period of tooth formation, truncated by the animals' death. We infer that the animals were killed during an extreme drought. Informed by the archaeological evidence, we surmise that this was probably a herd of springbok on ‘trek’ in search of food and water, as this species is known to do during droughts. Although palaeoenvironmental proxies for the region as a whole suggest that Namaqualand was cool and wet during the Little Ice Age, this study indicates at least one period of drought, contributing to the developing picture of highly variable climates in southern Africa during the Holocene. Outburst floods originating in moraine-dammed lakes represent a significant geomorphological process as well as a specific type of threat for local communities in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru (8.5°–10° S; 77°–78° W). An exceptional concentration of catastrophic floods has been reported from the Cordillera Blanca in the first half of 20th Century (1930s–1950s), leading to thousands of fatalities. The main objective of this paper is to provide a revised and comprehensive overview of geomorphologically effective floods in the area of interest, using various documentary data sources, verified by analysis of remotely sensed images (1948–2013) and enhanced by original field data. Verified events (n = 28; 4 not mentioned before) are analysed from the perspective of spatiotemporal distribution, pre-flood conditions, causes, mechanisms and geomorphological impacts as well as socioeconomical consequences, revealing certain patterns and similar features. GLOFs are further classified according to their magnitude: 5 extreme events, 8 major events and 15 minor events are distinguished, referring to the quantified geomorphological and socioeconomical impacts. Selected moraine dams and flood deposits are dated using lichenometric dating. Special attention is given to moraine dam breaches - the most frequent type of water release with the most significant consequences. Selected major events and their consequences are studied in detail in a separate section. Finally, a general schematic model of lake formation, growth and post-flood evolution reflecting initial topographical setting and glacier retreat is introduced and the utilization of the obtained results is outlined. Fluvial archives, in particular, late glacial to Holocene floodplain records may provide valuable information regarding past environmental conditions and stages of landscape evolution. In view of the high significance of floodplain dynamics for the development of entire landscapes, the number of studies that have been performed on floodplain sediments remains comparatively low, especially regarding the Western Mediterranean region. However, one of the reasons could be seen in the high complexity and diversity of processes and factors that control and influence fluvial activity that often hampers a straightforward interpretation of floodplain dynamics. Therefore, a basic demand on fluvial archive research is to address the complexity of the factors that control the characteristics of fluvial sequences in order to provide a robust basis for their interpretation. As a starting-point for discussion this paper aims to give an overview of fluvial dynamic patterns in the Western Mediterranean for the last 15 ka in order to examine their relevance for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. The basis for this is provided by previous investigations on four different river systems in Spain and northern Africa the results of which are herein synthesized in order to propose a regional Late Pleistocene and Holocene fluvial history for the Western Mediterranean realm. Basic results are related to alluvial floodplain deposits and visible features within them such as alluvial soils, incision marks and aggradation phenomena. Since fluvial systems are open systems, we discuss our findings against the background of different influencing factors that could modify fluvial architecture and may restrict palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. A more comprehensive interpretation focuses on signals that are common to each of the studied river systems. In this respect, we critically discuss the customary nature of cumulative probability functions for the identification of regional flooding episodes and point out the benefits of a stratigraphy-supported approach for characterizing regional floodplain dynamics. Finally, three alluvial soil formation periods were found in all settings: a first phase after 15 ka, ending with the Younger-Dryas Event; a second one from 7 to 5 ka with a break between 6.5 and 5.5 ka, and a third phase between 3 and 2 ka. These soil formation periods were interrupted and framed by fluvial dynamic phases accompanied by channel aggradation, floodplain deposition, floodplain erosion and/or river incision. In particular, after 5 ka, around 1.6 and at 1 ka, and during the Little Ice Age (LIA) floodplain aggradation affected river systems in Iberia and northern Africa as well. A cautious assessment of these results and extensive comparisons with secondary archive information prompts us to relate the aggradation periods with climate forcing by means of a supra-regional aridification that effected large areas of the Western Mediterranean. In contrast, the three mentioned soil formation periods can be linked with landscape stability, most probably triggered by favorable climate conditions in the Western Mediterranean. Apart from these large-scale patterns we discuss the reliability of information emerging from floodplain records against the background of individualistic river behavior and self-organization. Regarding future work we want to emphasize the great potential of yet rarely applied system-oriented approaches that also attach importance to sub-catchment dynamics as a link between catchment slopes and the main river floodplain. The Kumaun region of India in the northwestern Himalaya experiences complex rainfall patterns, receiving precipitation both during the summer monsoon (June to September) as well as during winter months dominated by westerlies (October to March). In this paper, we present a multi-proxy palaeoclimate record spanning the last ∼1500 years from Tadag Taal, an intermontane lake in Kumaun, India. Our dataset (stable isotope ratios, grain size, trace element ratios) suggests the occurrence of four long-term precipitation cycles of high and low rainfall coinciding with the Dark Ages Cold Period (DACP, ∼475–850 CE), Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA ∼900–1300 CE), Little Ice Age (LIA, ∼1450–1800 CE) and Current Warm Period (CWP, ∼1850 CE to Present). We infer multi-decadal to centennial-scale shifts in the Indian summer monsoon co-varying with changes in El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activity superimposed by changes in solar insolation. To correlate our time-series from the northwestern Himalaya with the Core Monsoon Zone and understand coherency in precipitation between the two regions, we applied the Wavelength Coherency Test. Our data suggest wet conditions during the early phase of the LIA (∼1450–1640 CE) and dry conditions in the later phase of the LIA from ∼1640–1800 CE. The wet conditions in the early LIA were perhaps driven by increased winter precipitation. This is in contrast to Central India that witnessed dry conditions during the entire duration of the LIA. This study thus suggests that monsoon strength was different during earlier and later phase of the LIA. Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is well known for the enigmas surrounding its unique megalithic statues, the moai, and the prehistoric (i.e., pre-European contact) Rapanui society that built them. These enigmas include, among others, the time of the island's settlement, the geographical origin of the first settlers, the technology associated with moai transportation and emplacement, the occurrence (or not) of an ecological and cultural collapse linked to the island's deforestation, and the potential influence of climatic shifts on ecological and cultural changes. Until recently, most explanations for prehistoric developments invoked anthropogenic causes, but the progressive development of paleoecological studies has incorporated a new perspective in which climate change and climate-human synergies have gained momentum. This paper reviews all paleoecological studies published to date and their contribution to a better understanding of Easter Island's prehistory, with a focus on four main aspects: (i) the discovery and settlement of the island, (ii) the eventual occurrence of climatic changes and its potential influence on landscape changes, (iii) spatiotemporal deforestation patterns, and (iv) the relationship between environmental, ecological and cultural shifts. Paleoecological research on Easter Island has proceeded through three main phases: a pioneer phase (1977–1992), a transitional phase (1993–2004) and a revival phase (2005–2020). During the pioneer and transitional phases, the paradigm of a self-induced prehistoric socioecological collapse known as the "ecocidal" hypothesis dominated the scene. However, new empirical evidence obtained during the revival phase highlighted the potential importance of climate change in prehistoric ecological and cultural developments. In addition, paleoecological records have provided novel insights into the initial discovery and occupation of Easter Island before Polynesian settlement. Paleoecological evidence has suggested or supported that (i) the island would have been discovered and sporadically/intermittently settled, possibly by Amerindian cultures, long before Polynesian colonization; (ii) climatic changes, especially centennial-scale droughts that occurred during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA), would have influenced ecological trends and cultural developments; (iii) deforestation was not a synchronous island-wide process but occurred at different times and at different rates according to the catchment considered; and (iv) both climatic and anthropogenic drivers, along with feedbacks between them, would have been responsible for the prehistoric socioecological developments on Easter Island. A general conclusion is that Easter Island's prehistory is complex and cannot be resolved using simplistic and deterministic approaches from isolated disciplines. Rather, uncovering this prehistory requires an integrated framework with contributions from complementary research fields such as anthropology, archaeology, ethnography, history and paleoecology, among others. This paper explains the potential contributions of paleoecology, in the hope that researchers in other disciplines will be able to incorporate the available paleoecological knowledge into their own studies. From a paleoecological point of view, further coring is needed and the use of novel biomarkers is highly recommended. This paper presents the geological and morphological evolution of the prograded Cassino barrier during the middle and late Holocene. A special focus is given on the presentation and discussion of records of environmental changes that occurred during barrier progradation. The results demonstrated that variable rates of progradation were produced by environmental changes that affected the coastal sediment budget, such as changes in the wave climate. The total progradation of 18 km recorded for the Cassino barrier is probably the highest extension of progradation registered for a ridge plain associated with a coastal barrier. Sea-level changes during barrier progradation were accessed by the high difference between the degree of compaction of the foredune and backshore/foreshore deposits detected by the drilling system applied in this study and were confirmed by the limit of those deposits, which were also revealed by GPR records. During most of the time of barrier progradation, an overall sea-level fall of approximately 2 ± 1 m occurred. Six sets of relict foredune ridges were identified, and the limits between them were well marked by ridge truncations and the formation of transgressive dune sheets (TDS). Optically stimulated luminescence ages show that the TDS were formed under the driest climate conditions, with age periods very close to 3.8, 3.5, 1.9, 1.5, 0.22 and 0.09 ka ago, interspersed with ages of known wetter conditions in southern Brazil. The modern phases of TDS formation, with ages varying from 0.25 to 0.22 ka ago, were coincident with the time period of the younger pulse of the Little Ice Age (LIA), which was characterized by arid and cold conditions in southern South America. A comparison with prograded barriers located 350 to 600 km to the north suggests the existence of teleconnections, with phases of TDS and parabolic dunes that formed with a time interval of approximately 405 to 583 years. This paper provides a high-resolution temperature reconstruction for the last Millennium from Lake Atnsjøen, SE Norway (61°52′31″N, 10°10′37″E). The sedimentary record reveals strong influence of the large-scale global climate patterns on the local climate in southern part of Eastern Norway. We reconstructed mean July air temperature using Chironomidae-based transfer function and fossil Chironomidae assemblages. The reconstruction was supported by a selection of climate-sensitive geochemical and paleoecological sedimentary proxies of terrestrial and aquatic origin, including Cladocera, pollen and macrofossils. Presented results revealed that summer temperatures were 1–2 °C warmer than the mean Millennial temperatures during the 11th, 13th, 15th and 20th centuries and 1–2 °C lower during the 12th, 14th, 17th–18th centuries. A persistent cold period, the Little Ice Age (LIA), occurred between 1550 and 1800 CE, was interrupted by a short warming at 1650 CE. The recognized regional climate fluctuations during the last Millennium affected the lake and its catchment, of which the strongest impact was caused by the LIA cooling. During the LIA the catchment vegetation was impacted by climate deterioration and the lake productivity reached its lowest level during the last Millennium. The current temperature reconstruction is in agreement with a previous continental scale temperature reconstruction for Europe. From obtained results it emerges that during the LIA the climate of western Scandinavia has been dictated by the atmospheric patterns originating from the North Atlantic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reconstructing three-dimensional palaeoglacier surface, thickness, and volume provides useful information for quantifying palaeo-climate conditions during glacial stages and assessing the impact of glacier change on water resources. A glacial flowline model has been implemented in Excel and ArcGIS to reconstruct palaeoglaciers based on digital elevation models and geomorphic constraints, such as moraines and trimlines that represent the margins and local heights of palaeoglaciers, respectively. However, significant efforts are still needed in using these tools for palaeoglacier reconstruction, such as digitizing flowlines, adjusting shear stress, and deriving shape factors. This paper presents an automated method, PalaeoIce, to reconstruct palaeoglaciers using geomorphic constraints. Coded in python, PalaeoIce is an ArcGIS toolbox with a set of tools to generate glacial flowlines, optimize shear stress, derive shape factors, calculate ice thickness values along flowlines, and interpolate palaeo ice surfaces based on geomorphic constraints. The use of PalaeoIce is demonstrated using extant glaciers with measured thickness values and moraines/trimlines of the Little Ice Age (LIA) and Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 in the eastern Tian Shan, China. The reconstructed ice thickness values of Glacier No. 1 in this area show a reasonable agreement with field measurements with 1.4 % and 5.4 % differences between measured and reconstructed mean ice thickness values using the two methods included in PalaeoIce: a revised ice thickness model for extant glaciers and a palaeoglacier reconstruction method based on glacier outlines, respectively. Two approaches are then illustrated for palaeoglacier reconstructions using two sets of geomorphic constraints: one with the fully reconstructed glacier outlines during the LIA, and the other with just the terminal moraine and limited trimlines during MIS 2. The African continent is characterised by a wide range of hydroclimate regimes, ranging from humid equatorial West Africa to the arid deserts in the northern and southern subtropics. The livelihoods of much of its population are also vulnerable to future climate change, mainly through variability in rainfall affecting water resource availability. A growing number of data sources indicate that such hydroclimatic variability is an intrinsic component of Africa's natural environment. This paper, co-authored by members of the PAGES Africa 2k Working Group, presents an extensive assessment and discussion of proxy, historical and instrumental evidence for hydroclimatic variability across the African continent, spanning the last two millennia. While the African palaeoenvironmental record is characterised by spatially disjunctive datasets, with often less-than-optimal temporal resolution and chronological control, the available evidence allows the assessment of prominent spatial patterns of palaeomoisture variability through time. In this study, we focus sequentially on data for six major time windows: the first millennium CE, the Medieval Climate Anomaly (900–1250 CE), the Little Ice Age (1250–1750 CE), the end of the LIA (1750–1850 CE), the Early Modern Period (1850–1950), and the period of recent warming (1950 onwards). This results in a continent-wide synthesis of regional moisture-balance trends through history, allowing consideration of possible driving mechanisms, and suggestions for future research. In the Northern Caucasus, glacier and climatic variations over the past centuries remain insufficiently documented. In this review, we summarized the high-resolution information on glacier and climate fluctuations in the region for the past millennium and provided a synthesis of these two lines of evidence with respect to regional climate change. The key areas considered in the paper are the Elbrus area, the Teberda and Arkhyz valleys in the Western Caucasus and the Cherek Bezengiisky and Tsey valleys in the Eastern Caucasus, where the most paleoclimatic evidence has been retrieved. We focused on the fluctuation records of the ten glaciers that are best documented. To reconstruct changes in glacier length in the past, we used aerial photos, optical space images, repeated photographs and old maps. The ages of moraines were defined with the help of instrumental records, historical images, old maps, and tree-ring dating. Lichenometry was used as a supplementary tool to determine the relative ages of glacial landforms. We reviewed the collection of control points used for the lichenometric curves and determined the time limit of potential use of this method in the Caucasus to be up to one millennium. High-resolution tree-ring-based hydroclimatic reconstructions in the Northern Caucasus are presented based on the reconstruction of June–September temperature (1595–2012 CE), the mass balance reconstruction of the Garabashi Glacier (1800–2008 CE) and the runoff of the Teberda River (low-frequency variations) for May, July and August for 1850–2005 CE. The synthesis of all the available paleoclimatic records revealed several distinct climatic periods. Evidence of a warm interval (traditionally referred to as the “Arkhyz break in glaciation”) preceding the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Caucasus is based on archeological, palynological, geochemical and pedological data. However, the conclusions concerning the duration and magnitude of this warming are still vague due to the low resolution of the data available and ambiguous interpretation of the evidence. The first LIA maximum glacier extent in the past millennium is poorly constrained. According to our data, it occurred prior to the year 1598 CE (tree-ring-based minimum age). Two other major phases of advances occurred in the second half of the 17th century CE and the first half of 19th century CE. General glacier retreat in the Northern Caucasus started in the late 1840s CE, with four to five minor readvances in the 1860s–1880s CE and three readvances or steady states in the 20th century CE (1910s, 1920s and 1970s–1980s). Since the last LIA maximum in the middle of the 19th century CE, most glaciers have decreased in length by more than 1000 m, and the rise in the elevation of the glacier fronts has exceeded 200 m. The glacier advances correspond to summer temperature minima and are generally coherent with the reconstructed mass balance of the Garabashi Glacier. A comparison of a tree-ring-based summer temperature reconstruction in the Northern Caucasus with detailed reconstructions of summer temperature and glacier fluctuations in the Alps shows a pronounced agreement between the records and supports the similarity between the patterns of climatic and glacier variations in the two regions. Active periglacial processes are currently marginal in the Iberian Peninsula, spatially limited to the highest mountain ranges. However, a wide variety of periglacial deposits and landforms are distributed in low and mid-altitude environments, which shows evidence of past periods of enhanced periglacial activity. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the present knowledge of past periglacial activity in the Iberian Peninsula. The chronological framework takes four main stages into account: the last glaciation, deglaciation, Holocene and present-day processes. This study focuses on the highest massifs (Pyrenees, Cantabrian Range, NW ranges, Central Range, Iberian Range, Sierra Nevada) as well as other lower elevation environments, namely the central Iberian Meseta. During the last glaciation the periglacial belt extended to much lower altitudes than today, reaching current sea level in the NW corner of the Iberian Peninsula. A wide range of geomorphological landforms and sedimentary records is indicative of very active periglacial processes during that phase, in some cases related to permafrost conditions (i.e., block streams, rock glaciers). Most of the inactive landforms and deposits in low and mid-elevations in Iberia are also related to this phase. The massive deglaciation of the Iberian massifs was caused by a gradual increase in temperatures. The deglaciation phase was only interrupted by a short period with colder conditions (the Younger Dryas) that reactivated periglacial processes in the formerly glaciated cirques of the highest lands, specifically with the widespread development of rock glaciers. During the Holocene, periglacial processes have been only active in the highest ranges, shifting in altitude according to temperature regimes and moisture conditions. The Little Ice Age saw the reactivation of periglacial activity in lower elevations than today. Currently, periglacial processes are only active in elevations exceeding 2500 m in the southern ranges and above 2000–2200 m in the northern massifs, higher in Sierra Nevada, in the south of Iberian Peninsula. The beginning of the 1770s in the Czech Lands is well documented for its meteorological extremes and their social impacts. However, the effects of these extremes on geomorphic systems and on landslide occurrence and activity in particular have been minimally studied. In this paper, we use a complex set of written and iconographic documentary data to reconstruct the landslide calamity in North Bohemia, with a detailed case study of the Kozí vrch Hill landslide. The landslide calamity of 1770 is the oldest known landslide calamity in this region, including 14 documented events; and its reconstruction may therefore provide important data on landslide frequency, triggers, and impacts during the adverse weather patterns in the last part of the Little Ice Age (LIA). We focus on a case study of the Kozí vrch Hill landslide, and we use the documentary evidence and field techniques to reconstruct its location, extent, topography, kinematics, and triggers. Based on precipitation indices and weather descriptions, the extremely wet and rainy preceding year and the 1769/1770 winter were the major triggering factors that resulted in water saturation of Neogene volcaniclastics underlying the basalt lava flows and their subsequent collapse. Furthermore, we analyse the post-landslide terrain transformation and land use patterns during the 240 years following the landslide to illustrate the persistence of particular landslide features. We conclude that the major transformations, which obscured most of the landslide features, occurred in only the last 50–60 years. Finally, we discuss the role of documentary data and the current methodological advances in their use for the reconstruction of landslide frequency and impacts during the LIA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we evaluate morphological changes related to the Plan d'Arem dam (1970), a run-of-river (RoR) dam located on the Upper Garonne (central Pyrenees), and disentangle its morphological effects from other drivers (post-Little Ice Age [LIA] climate change, changes in agricultural practice, catchment afforestation, upstream damming, and bypassing). The work is based on a before-after-control-impact approach, a space-time framework that allowed the stating of four hypotheses distinguishing the effects of the considered dam from other pressures. We first examined the potential reduction to the flow regime ( Q L ) and bedload transport ( Q S ) from these pressures, then assessed planimetric changes (1942–2019), vertical evolution (1922–2014), and sediment size within the channel. The results show the river completed adjustments related to post-LIA climate change and catchment afforestation at the beginning of the study period, with channel narrowing affecting the whole study reach and ranging from 0.6% to 1.2% yr−1. Upstream dams and catchment afforestation reduced both the frequency and magnitude of peak flows and sediment supply, resulting in an increase in the channel narrowing rate on the upstream sub-reach (−1.2% yr−1). However, downstream tributaries buffered these changes, and no downstream propagation was found. The effects of the Plan d'Arem started around 15 yr after its construction, with channel narrowing at a rate of 0.9% yr−1 until the 2010s. The exceptional flood of June 2013 resulted in important channel widening followed by a new period of narrowing upstream of the Plan d'Arem dam, combined with channel stability downstream caused by a new dam management regime (flushing actions). We conclude that the before-after-control-impact approach is effective for isolating the effects of an RoR dam from those of other pressures, and that flushing actions mitigated the effects of the dam. Abstract: This paper presents the results of multi-proxy research (pollen, plant macrofossil, testate amoebae and bulk density) on a 100-cm core collected from a Baltic raised bog in N Poland. The impact of the variability of the climate as well as human disturbance in the last 650 years on the development of the peat bog Kusowskie Bagno is described. Based on the results, the development of the raised bogs to the south of the southern coast of the Baltic Sea during the Little Ice Age occurred differently than in NW Europe. In NW Europe (e.g., Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark and N Germany) during the periods of climate cooling associated with lower solar activity, there was a characteristic wet phase, whereas N Poland was characterised by a dry phase. In the years AD 1450–1500, AD 1640–1720 and AD 1810–1840, which correlate with the periods of lower solar activity (the Spörer, Maunder and Dalton minima) and the periods of lower temperatures in Europe, the water table in Kusowskie Bagno decreased, and this was followed by changes in the vegetation. The largest drop in the water table occurred in the years AD 1640–1720. The dry phase resulted in the reduction of the population of Archerella flavum and Amphitrema wrightianum, which are organisms that are typical of wet habitats, and the appearance of, e.g., Arcella artocrea and Phryganella acropodia, which are indicators of dry habitats. The humidity decline halted the growth of Sphagnum sec. Cuspidata (Sph. cuspidatum and Sph. balticum) and Sphagnum magellanicum. At the same time, Eriophorum vaginatum, Baeothryon caespitosum and Pinus sylvestris appeared, and a dramatic increase in the bulk density is also observed. Since AD 1720, when the solar activity and the water table increased, the bog regenerated, and the population of Sphagnum fuscum/capillifolium developed. The development of the studied raised bog depended mainly on climate change. The increasing human impact in the area, which started in approximately AD 1320 and lasted for several centuries, was manifested in deforestation and in the increase in the surface area of farmland. The present paper provides new insights into the climatic and anthropic factors that influenced a 6000-year coastal evolution in northwestern Corsica, the third largest island of the western Mediterranean. Pollen, microcharcoal, sedimentary and geochemical analyses were carried out on a core drilled in the Crovani coastal wetland to reconstruct the regional drivers of landscape change. We show that anthropogenic and climate-induced fires favoured the development of Mediterranean maquis, dominated by Erica and Quercus ilex , from ca. 6000 to 3350 cal. BP. A change in arboreal vegetation triggered a short but intense sediment input in the Crovani pond between ca. 3350 and 3200 cal. BP. This is consistent with a coeval process of runoff recorded in several coastal sites of western Corsica and related to an arid climate change occurred in many sites of the western Mediterranean around 3200 years ago. We provide evidence of agriculture during the Late Neolithic from ca. 3900 BC, which is much earlier than any archaeological evidence previously available in this area of Corsica, followed by a progressive decline of arable farming practices. Human impact has been responsible for a degradation of the maquis only from approximately 3000 cal. BP, and it intensified in Roman times, when the area experienced the first phase of galena exploitation from the Argentella mines. Over the last 500 years, the present work evidences a major development of Castanea related to cultivation during the Genoese administration of Corsica. Our findings suggest that solar activity and the North Atlantic Oscillation had an influence on centennial-scale forest cover variations during the last 6000 years. • A new palynological, sedimentological and geochemical study is presented from a coastal wetland of Corsica. • The high-resolution 6000-year pollen record shows an unprecedented long persistence of Erica and Quercus ilex maquis. • Human activities developed especially during the Late and Final Neolithic and the last 1000 years. • Evidence of agriculture predates any Neolithic archaeological findings in this region. • The 4.2 ka event, Homeric Minimum, and Little Ice Age are not associated with forest declines. Abstract: In this paper we explore the evidence for Holocene Rapid Climate Changes (RCCs) in Western Mediterranean records, examining similarities and differences in the timing and nature of impacts on different components of the natural environment (vegetation, fluvial and coastal sedimentation, fire activity, soil formation). Marine, lacustrine, and fluvial archives of the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa) provide evidence for both pervasive millennial-scale climatic variability and abrupt (decadal- to centennial-scale) transitions. We focus in particular on three RCCs characterised by high-latitude cooling, glacier advances and North-Atlantic ice-rafting events: the mid-Holocene RCC interval 6–5calka BP, the late-Holocene RCC interval 3.5–2.5calka BP, and the historical RCC interval known as the Little Ice Age (LIA, 1300–1950AD). Evidence from multiple records indicates wide-ranging impacts of RCCs in the Western Mediterranean region. The three RCC intervals were characterised, however, by contrasting hydrological situations in the Western Mediterranean, with prevailing dry conditions including marked aridification events during the RCC intervals 6–5 and 3.5–2.5calka BP, and prevailing or recurrent wet conditions during the LIA. We examine issues of proxy sensitivity in palaeoecological and geomorphological records and evaluate examples of contrasting geomorphological responses to regional climatic triggers between humid and semi-arid sectors of the Western Mediterranean. Finally, we consider the long-term sensitivity of the region to rapid climate change, the role of threshold changes, and the extent to which this region represents a “fragile” landscape. Abstract: Natural cycles of irradiation during burial and bleaching due to solar exposure during transport increase the Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) sensitivity of quartz sand grains. The relationship between the OSL sensitivity and sediment transport allows to discriminate quartz sand grains with different depositional histories. In this paper, we evaluate the variation of OSL sensitivity in quartz grains deposited during the progradation of the Ilha Comprida barrier on the southern Brazilian, coast. Changes in sand sensitivity recorded by barrier growth since 6 ka ago are controlled by the variation in the proportion of low versus high sensitivity quartz grains. Low sensitivity grains with short sedimentary history are supplied by the Ribeira de Iguape River and reach the barrier through southward alongshore currents during fair weather conditions. Storm conditions shift the alongshore currents to northeast and permit the transport of high sensitivity grains with long sedimentary history from distal southern coastal sectors to the barrier. Therefore, the input of distal sediments for the Ilha Comprida barrier depends on the frequency and intensity of storms. Thus, the OSL sensitivity can be used as proxy for storm activity. The variation of OSL sensitivity through time indicates that the Ilha Comprida barrier changed from a relatively stable to an unstable storm pattern around 2 ka ago. Periods with increased storm activity peaked around AD 500, AD 1500 and AD 1850, approximately on the boundaries of the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper focuses on the influence of the “Little Ice Age” (LIA) glacier advance on hillslope morphometry and development in selected U-shaped and (para)glacial tributary valleys, which are still occupied in their upper parts by outlet glaciers of the Jostedalsbreen ice cap in Western Norway. Especially the morphometric influences and geomorphic consequences of the LIA glacier advance on the development of the valley-side hillslope systems and associated denudative processes are assessed by comparing hillslope systems located inside and outside of the LIA glacier maximum extent. The process-based approach applied includes orthophoto- and topographical map interpretation as well as hillslope profile surveying in field for morphometric analyses and detailed geomorphological mapping for process analyses. In addition GIS and DEM computing as well as geophysical measurements (georadar) for storage analyses are performed. It is found that hillslopes inside the LIA glacier limit have steepened lower hillslope segments due to a negative sediment net balance of removal and deposition of material by the advancing LIA glacier front. There are significant differences in the present-day slope debris thickness and composition between hillslopes inside or outside the LIA glacier limit. Slope debris from hillslopes inside the glacier maximum extent are clearly less thick and display a different internal structure originating from a combination of debris from gravitational processes and reworked modern glacial deposits. Compared to that slope debris covers on hillslopes outside the LIA glacier limit are in general noticeable thicker and less influenced by glacial deposits. The combined effects of modified slope morphometry and altered composition of material covering lower hillslope segments have generated a higher intensity of post-LIA denudative hillslope processes. Abstract: Knowledge about the dynamics of modern glaciers is relevant for evaluating climatic change. However, there is very little and conflicting information about the extent of modern glaciers in northwestern Mongolia. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present detailed data about the extent of modern glaciers in the Turgen–Kharkhiraa Mountains in the northwestern part of the Mongolian Altai and to distinguish three main phases of ice extent: in 1991, in 1948, and back to the Holocene glacial epoch including the so-called Little Ice Age (LIA) — a worldwide cooling period beginning in the 16th century and lasting until the end of the 19th century (). Based on field work, topographic maps and aerial photographs of this region, the investigations have shown glacier retreat in 1991, since 1948, as compared to Holocene glaciations including the so-called Little Ice Age period. Using the toe-to-summit altitude (TSAM) method, the overall modern snowline can be calculated at about 3537–3559masl; the area of present glaciers can be calculated to be 33.8km2 for the Turgen Mountains and 39.5km2 for the Kharkhiraa Mountains. This is more than 25% of the glaciated area of Mongolia. The LIA snowline was about ∼80m lower (3461–3480masl), whereby the glaciated areas during the LIA was 76.8km2 and 80.8km2 in the two mountain systems, respectively. In conclusion, there has been a remarkable glacier retreat from this Holocene and Little Ice Age compared to the glaciation in 1948 and 1991. Abstract: This paper presents the first stable isotope (δ18O and δ13C) data of a ∼400 years (1590–2006 AD) long annual to decadal-resolution speleothem record collected from the Indian Lesser Himalaya. The data show a variation from −2.7 to −5.9‰ in δ18O and −5.3 to −8.8‰ in δ13C. The isotopic analyses indicate that the climate during this period can be divided into two stages: a wet phase during the Little Ice Age (LIA) (1590–1850 AD) and comparatively dry phase during the post-LIA after 1850 AD. However, the record also documents the minor dry events during the LIA and a wet episode after the LIA. Within the age uncertainty, the dry spells during the LIA are linked with the historical drought events in the Indian subcontinent and similar latitudes. The isotopic record is consistent with a number of previous studies in the areas influenced by the Westerlies but appears to be conflicting to the regions, dominated by the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM). This may be due to the possible changes in the strength of Westerlies in the study area and added by negative anomaly of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) during the LIA. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The longest series of instrumental observations have a number of problems in the early period. This paper is focused on the recovery of early indoor and outdoor observations in Padua and their transformation in terms of a modern series. The Padua series was started by Giovanni Poleni with outdoor observations in 1716–1718, but soon, the readings passed indoors (1725–1764) to join the directives of the Royal Society, London. The indoor readings were recovered within the EU project IMPROVE, but it was necessary to transform indoor observations into outdoor ones, and this was possible thanks to the presence of simultaneous indoor and outdoor observations by Morgagni in Padua and Beccari in Bologna. These parallel series were also useful to fill a short gap. Another problem was to reconstruct the calibration of the Amontons thermometer, which changed when Poleni moved to a new house. Also the problem of the use of variable and/or different sampling times was solved making reference to the trend of the daily cycles in the different seasons and under diverse weather conditions. The data analysis has shown a trend that appears similar to the well-known results (IPCC 2007) for the last 160yr but a less marked recent warming for winter and autumn. The 18th century was characterized by cold winters (culminated 1709 and 1740) and springs, and warm summers and autumns. A well-marked Bruckner cycle (35.8yr), continually repeated and attenuated, is visible for the period 1716–1930. The wide time scale and the repetition of warmer and colder periods over two-thirds of the series noted in Padua and other Mediterranean stations may induce us to suppose that such cycles could continue in the future, at least on the local scale. Abstract: This paper presents new evidence regarding relative sea-level (RSL) changes and vertical land motions at three sites in Greenland since 1300A.D., a time interval that spans the later part of the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). We observe RSL rise at two sites in central west Greenland from c. −0.80±0.20m at c. 1300A.D. to c. −0.20m±0.25m at c. 1600A.D., after which RSL slowed and then stabilised. At a third site in south Greenland, we observe RSL rise from c. −1.40±0.20m at c. 1400A.D. until c. 1750A.D., after which RSL slowed and was stable during at least the latter part of the 20th century. The c. 1600A.D. RSL slow-down seen at the two former sites is surprising because it occurs during the LIA when one might expect the ice sheet to be gaining mass and causing RSL to rise. We interpret this RSL slowdown to indicate a period of enhanced regional mass loss from central west Greenland since c. 1600A.D. and propose two hypotheses for this loss: first, a reduction in precipitation during cold and dry conditions and second, higher air temperatures and increased peripheral surface melt of the ice sheet from this date onwards. The latter hypothesis is compatible with a well-established temperature seesaw between western Greenland and northern Europe and, potentially, a previously identified shift from a positive to generally more negative NAO conditions around 1400 to 1600A.D. Our study shows how RSL data from Greenland can provide constraints on the timing of ice sheet fluctuations in the last millennium and challenges the notion that during cold periods in northern Europe the ice sheet in west Greenland gained mass. Abstract: This paper interprets high resolution relative sea-level (RSL) reconstructions obtained from recently deposited salt-marsh sediments in Greenland. The primary aim of this study is to determine the relative contribution to the RSL observations from local to regional ice mass changes as well as density-related (steric) variations in the adjacent ocean. At sites in west Greenland, RSL rise slows from ~3mm/yr to ~0mm/yr at 400years BP and is stable thereafter. In south Greenland, a similar RSL slowdown is also observed but this occurs approximately 200yrs later. Substantial contributions from oceanographic changes are ruled out as dominant drivers of the RSL slowdown in western Greenland but could be more important at Nanortalik. Model sensitivity tests indicate that the RSL data are not compatible with a dominant dynamic ice loss via the Jakobshavn Isbrae outlet glacier as the region of ice loss and the resulting sea-level trends are too localised. Regional changes in ice thickness related to surface mass balance changes can explain the observed RSL signals but only if there is dominant mass loss during the period 400years BP to present. This conclusion is unaffected even when uncertainties in Earth viscosity structure are taken into account. However, it is plausible that some of the RSL fall may be due to reduced ice growth at the onset of the Little Ice Age. A high resolution mass balance history of the Greenland Ice Sheet over the past few millennia and the influence of lateral Earth structure on predictions of RSL change are identified as priority areas of study in order to confidently separate local, ‘transient’ (e.g. elastic and gravitational) RSL changes from the long-term viscous contribution associated primarily with deglacial changes. Abstract: We have reevaluated the viscoelastic and elastic responses to the past and present-day ice changes in Southeast Alaska (SE-AK) based on a GPS data set by combining the data previously published in 2005 with additional uplift rates compiled recently. There are 22 new GPS sites, yielding a total of 91 sites. The mean observation epoch of the data sets is the middle of 2003. Here we considered three ice unloading effects due to the last glacial maximum (LGM), the Little Ice Age (LIA) and the present-day ice melting (PDIM). We also examined the dependency of the estimated lithospheric thickness and the asthenospheric viscosity on PDIM models. For this test, two PDIM models were used: one is a model, called here the UAF05 ice model, whose mean epoch is the mid-1970s, and the other is a model, called here the UAF07 model, whose mean epoch is the mid-1980s. Statistical examinations of the misfits between observations and model predictions indicate that UAF07 gives much more consistent results than UAF05, based on the magnitude of the minimum χ 2 and the agreement of the residual distribution with a Gaussian function. We have tested two different kinds of mantle viscosity structure: a 2-layer model similar to the model used the paper previously published in 2005 and a 4-layer model. For the 2-layer model, at the 95% confidence level, the optimum values for the lithospheric thickness and the asthenospheric viscosity (with a thickness of 110km) are 54 (45–65) km and 5.58 (4.0–12.0) in unit of 1018 Pas, respectively. On the other hand, for the 4-layer model, the best values were 60 (42–63) km and 10.0 (3.0–13) in unit of 1018 Pas, respectively. The comparison between the analysis results for GPS data and the model computations indicates that the observations detect not only the uplift rates in SE-AK but also their time variations which are considered to be due to the glacier changes after the 1990s. Abstract: Scărişoara Ice Cave (NW Romania) contains the world''s largest underground perennial ice deposit. In this paper we present the results from pollen, micro- and macro-charcoal, and plant macrofossil investigations of a vertical ice exposure spanning the past ca. 1000years in the Little Reservation from this cave. These results are then compared with three peat sequences close to the study area in order to evaluate the potential of using biotic remains preserved in the ice block for past vegetation, environment and climatic reconstructions. Pollen data from Scărişoara Ice Cave suggest that each impurity-poor layer is likely to include a smaller number of years, compared to organic-rich layers in which repeated, multi-annual melting events may have concentrated a higher amount of organic matter. However, layers with abundant presence of organic matter and also containing plant macro-remains, micro- and macro-charcoal particles appear to indicate a rapid wash-in of surface material into the cave. Evidence from the pollen record suggests the prevalence of close forest dominated by Fagus sylvatica between ca. AD 1200 and 1500 and by Picea abies between ca. AD 1000 and 1500 and from AD 1550 onwards. Contrary to the pollen records from the surface, the pollen assemblages from Scărişoara Ice Cave are characterized by low frequencies and diversity of pollen of herbaceous plants (non-arboreal pollen, NAP) and coprophilous spores. However, there are fluctuating frequencies in these taxa, which appear to track changes in climate conditions (higher during the Medieval Warm Period and lower during the Little Ice Age), which suggest that land-use changes were likely modulated by the climate. High amounts of micro- and macro-charcoal particles between AD 1600 and 1850, when climate conditions were cool and wet, suggests that the charcoal was washed into the cave during times of extreme rainfall events, rather than associated with increased burning regime. A comparison with pollen records from the surface shows analogous forest development and fluctuations in the NAP, therefore supporting the hypothesis that the cave ice can be a valuable paleoecological archive. Abstract: The Guadalentín River, located in southeast Spain, is considered one of the most torrential rivers in Spain, as indicated by catastrophic events such as the 1879 flood that caused 777 fatalities in the Murcia region. In this paper, flood frequency and magnitude of the upper Guadalentín River were reconstructed using geomorphological evidence, combined with one-dimensional hydraulic modelling and supported by records from documentary sources at Lorca in the lower Guadalentín catchment. Palaeoflood studies were conducted along a 2.5-km reach located at the confluence of the Rambla Mayor (162km2) and Caramel River (210km2). These tributaries join at the entrance of a narrow bedrock canyon, carved in Cretaceous limestone, which is 15–30m wide and 40m deep. Six stratigraphic profiles were described, the thickest and most complete corresponding to flood benches deposited upstream of the canyon constriction. The stratigraphic and documentary records identify five main phases of increased flood frequency. Phase 1, based on sedimentary palaeoflood evidence alone, occurred at c. AD 950–1200 with at least ten floods with minimum discharge estimates of 15–580m3 s−1. Phases 2–5, identified through combined sedimentary and documentary evidence occurred at: (a) AD 1648–1672, with eight documentary floods and two palaeofloods exceeding 580–680m3 s−1 (most probably the AD 1651 and 1653 events); (b) AD 1769–1802, comprising seven documentary floods, of which at least two events (>250m3 s−1) are preserved in the sedimentary record; (c) AD 1830–1840, with four documentary floods, and at least two events recorded in the stratigraphy (760–1035m3 s−1); and finally (d) the AD 1877–1900 period that witnessed seven documentary floods, with three palaeofloods exceeding 880m3 s−1. The palaeoflood and historical flood information indicate an anomalous increase in the frequency of large magnitude floods between AD 1830 and 1900, which can be attributed to climatic variability accentuated by intensive deforestation and land use practices during the first decades of the nineteenth century. Abstract: This paper documents the occurrence of the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the El Azufre and El Peñón glaciers at 35°S and in the Las Choicas and Las Damas glaciers at 34°55′S in the headwaters of the Rio Grande basin in the Central Andes of Argentina. Moraine morphology, stratigraphic relationships, radiocarbon ages obtained from peat on these glacial deposits and the proximity to the active glaciers enabled us to reconstruct the LIA advance in this area. The LIA maximum advance occurred between cal. yr 1550 and 1720 AD, and a readvance occurred around cal. yr 1830 AD. In addition, glacier fluctuations of the Las Vacas and Güssfeltd glaciers (33°S) and El Peñón and El Azufre glaciers were documented from the end of the 19th century to the present based on historical and aerial photographs, and satellite images. The glaciers showed a marked retreat during 1894–2007. Minor readvances occurred in the 1980s and 1990s, which could be related with strong warm ENSO events during these decades. Abstract: This paper presents an updated, extensive review of glacier fluctuations during the past 1000years in the extratropical Andes of South America between ca. 17° and 55°S. Given the variety of environmental conditions and evidence available for glacier fluctuations across this wide latitudinal range, regional accounts are given for the Desert Andes (∼17°–31°S), the Andes of central Chile and Argentina (31°–36°S), and the North (36°–45°S) and South (45°–55°S) Patagonian Andes. The techniques, dating limitations, and interpretations of the glacier records along this transect are also discussed. Information on glacier fluctuations in the Desert Andes is limited to the 20th century. Documentation on past glacier variations is more abundant in the Central Chilean-Argentinean Andes, but the number of chronologies dealing with glacier fluctuations prior to the 1900s is also limited. Most records indicate that glaciers were generally more extensive prior to the 20th century, with dates of maximum expansion ranging from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The number and extent of glaciers increase significantly in the Patagonian region, where the evidence available for dating glacier variations during the past centuries is more abundant and the dating control for glacier events is generally better than in the northern parts of the study area. For some Patagonian glaciers, maximum Little Ice Age (LIA) or post-LIA advances have been precisely dated by dendro-geomorphological determinations or in situ measurements. However, for most sites, the evidence available is still preliminary and there is considerable variability in the extent and timing of events related to the maximum LIA expansion identified in most areas between the 16th and 19th centuries. Evidence is starting to appear at a growing number of sites for glacier advances during the first half of the past millennium. These events were generally less extensive than the LIA maximum pulses. Despite the occurrence of several post-LIA readvances over the past 100–110years, most areas in the Andes of extratropical South America have experienced a general pattern of glacier recession and significant ice mass losses. The differences in the glacier histories observed at local and regional scales probably reflect the inherent limitations associated with the glacier records and/or the dating techniques used in each case together with the varying dominance of precipitation, temperature and other climatic and non-climatic factors on glacier mass balance and glacier dynamics. These differences indicate that the late Holocene glacier history of southern South America is more complex than commonly assumed. The evidence discussed in this study highlights not only the immense potential for glaciological studies of this region but also a significant need for an increased number of detailed, well-dated records of glacier fluctuations. This paper describes differences between Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and present-day temperatures in the area composed of the Antarctic Peninsula, southern Patagonia, and the surrounding southern oceans. The investigation is conducted with the simulation results from the Community Earth System Model Last Millennium Ensemble (CESM-LME) considering the impact of each natural (volcanic activity and solar variability) and anthropogenic (greenhouse gas, ozone-aerosols and land use/land cover) individual forcing relative to the full forced simulations. Model results show generalized warming during the MCA in the study area. However, the simulated MCA temperatures are significantly colder than present-day mean values due to the influence of increased atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations since the beginning of the modern Industrial Era in the ∼1850s. In fact, model runs in which only natural forcings were applied show that, in the absence of greenhouse gas forcing, present-day temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula and southern Patagonia would be lower than or similar to those during the MCA. The general trend of glacial retreat since the Little Ice Age has shown an acceleration during the last decades in Southern Argentine and Chilean Patagonia. The Fuegian Andes climatic records report an irregular mean annual temperature increase since 1970, with acceleration from 2015, and the Chato Glacier, as other regional cirque glaciers, has undergone a rapid ice front retreat. A detailed mapping of the proglacial area of the Chato Glacier allowed the identification of a landform assemblage related to the glacier retreat during the last decades. In this paper morphological and sedimentological features of this peculiar landform assemblage, generated in an intense glacial ablation environment, are described and the causes of their origin are discussed. Among the most remarkable landforms annual moraines, hummocky moraines, esker-like landforms, flutes, kettle ponds, dirt cones, glacifluvial deposits, pronival ramparts and collapsed moraines are found. The multitemporal analysis of the Chato Glacier retreat allowed us to interpret that most of these landforms were generated when the landscape became ice-free after 2005. The Chato Glacier cirque floor gentle slope, the thin-ice thickness and the occurrence of a rocky threshold near the glacier front would have promoted the rapid glacier thinning and the disconnection of dead ice. Abstract: This paper presents a 1.80-m-long varved sediment record documenting the vegetation history by pollen and diatom analysis recovered from Lake Pavin, a volcanic crater lake in the Auvergne (French Massif Central). High-resolution sampling and a varve-based age model allowed the reconstruction of ecosystem responses to both regional climate change and human impact. According to the present varve chronology, the Lake Pavin sequence covers the last 700 years, thus representing the late Subatlantic period (i.e. from the Late Medieval onwards). The pollen record largely reflects intensive human influence (clearing, cultivation and grazing) on the lake surrounding area. The arboreal pollen spectrum of the entire sequence is co-dominated by Fagus and Quercus, except during the 20th century. However, whilst the Quercus record is relative stable, several major fluctuations are discernable in the Fagus curve. An increase in Pinus and Picea shortly before of the turn the 20th Century, indicates afforestation by conifers. The varve counting indicates that the most prominent signal in the Fagus curve occurs during the period between about 1540 and 1670 AD. During this interval, the initial drop in the Fagus curve is estimated to have taken 5–10 years, with the subsequent recovery occurring over a similar period. Since there is no clear evidence of tree population replacement, such rapid signals imply that the fluctuations in the Fagus curve reflect variations in pollen production, being influenced by the cooler temperatures experienced during a cold spell of the Little Ice Age. The Columbia Icefield is the largest icefield in the Canadian Rockies and feeds eight major glaciers that drain to three different oceans. Previous glacier studies have focused on Athabasca and Saskatchewan Glaciers, primarily due to their easy access. This paper reviews evidence of the Holocene history from all eight glaciers. Maximum Holocene glacier extent was during the Little Ice Age (LIA) with dating based mainly on minimum tree-ring estimates from trees growing on the moraines or from trees scarred, tilted or killed by the glaciers. The LIA maximum advance was during the 19th century at Athabasca (1843/4), Dome (1846), Saskatchewan (1862) and Castleguard (<1858) Glaciers but during the 18th century at Manitoba (1740), Columbia (<1739), Kitchener (<1713) and Stutfield (1758). Advances in 1714 (Athabasca) and 1740 (Saskatchewan) were of almost equal extent to the 19th century maxima. Early LIA advances are identified from a buried in-situ stump at Stutfield (>1271) and detrital wood from lateral moraines at Columbia (ca. 0.8-0.7ka). Two overridden stumps at Columbia Glacier indicate a previously unidentified advance ca 1500 A.D. These four phases of LIA coincide with major reductions in summer temperatures reconstructed at the Icefield. There are also undated (pre-1600, possibly pre LIA) moraines at Kitchener Glacier. Less extensive Neoglacial glacier events are documented by an in-situ forest bed buried by the Saskatchewan Glacier (ca 2.90–3.4 ka., equivalent to the "Peyto advance") and stumps buried by till ca. 4.2ka at Boundary Glacier. Detrital wood recovered from till at Columbia Glacier indicates at least one glacier advance ca 2.0-2.2ka. Till exposed between the Bridge River and Mazama tephras at Stutfield Glacier includes detrital wood dating 2.22–2.70 ka that possibly indicates a glacier advance immediately prior to the Bridge River tephra. Regional paleoenvironmental data indicate warmer conditions and higher treelines in the early Holocene. Detrital wood washed out of Dome and Athabasca Glaciers indicates trees were present in these valleys ca 6, 7 and 9ka upvalley of present glacier snouts. Evidence from Castleguard cave indicates upstream entrances below the present Icefield were probably ice free ca 9.5ka indicating the icefield was much reduced in extent at that time.
