• Many mental health disorders first emerge during early childhood or adolescence. • Wait times for children's mental health services have been an international and widespread problem. • Long wait times prolong the emotional distress of children and/or adolescents and their caregivers which can exacerbate mental health difficulties. • The majority of research in this area has been conducted in the United Kingdom and Canada and focus on one waitlist strategy. • Common strategies include alternative service delivery models, increasing system capacity, and improving intake and assessment processes. Background: Although many mental health disorders first emerge during early childhood or adolescence, there is a significant gap between demand and availability of mental health resources, leading to long waitlists for services. Objective: The objective of this scoping review was to identify and characterize the research literature related to the range of waitlist management strategies that have been implemented in outpatient child and adolescent mental health care. Methods: Electronic databases reviewed included: Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), PubMed, PsychINFO, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and ISI Web of Science. Grey literature databases included: OpenGrey, Conference Papers Index, and Proquest Digital Dissertations. Articles were screened by two reviewers in two steps: first by title and abstract, then full text level. Data were extracted using an a-priori developed data extraction framework, which was piloted and modified iteratively. Results: A total of 119 papers related to waitlist interventions in child and adolescent mental health were reviewed. Of these 119 papers, 11% were reviews, summary, or theoretical papers; 8% used a randomized control trial design and 2.5% were trial protocols. Most studies used less rigorous designs, such as uncontrolled before-and- after designs. The large majority focused on just one waitlist strategy each. The most commonly used approaches included: prioritization/triage and initial assessment; brief consultation and advice or brief therapy approaches; group-based models; interim services; increasing capacity; and strategies to decrease non-attendance. Most studies were conducted in the United Kingdom or Canada. Discussion: While mental health systems are complex, most studies examining waitlist initiatives explored the implementation of single initiatives. It is unlikely that a single waitlist strategy can be effective in managing wait times for children's mental health. Rather, consistent and systemic approaches to address wait times that consider the impact of the reduction approach on the patient, the program, and the community are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Awareness: develop and evaluate the impact of digital strategies in helping veterans and their families acquire mental health knowledge. • Motivation: increase engagement with mental health literacy initiatives through a documentary performance featuring ex-servicemen and actors. • Action: implement and evaluate a psycho-educational program in partnership with the University of British Columbia, Canada (Balfour et al., 2014). • Synthesize an approach to effective interventions in arts-based practice with returning veterans and their families. The rich history of arts, mental health and military work dates back to the First World War. The article describes an arts-based four-year research project focussed on work with returning military personnel and their families dealing with mental health issues. The Difficult Return , funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery grant, consisted of three distinct interventions: an online mental health awareness campaign; a documentary-play designed to motivate military audience to seek help; and a ten-day intensive psychotherapeutic program utilising enactments. The paper will outline key concepts used, methods, approach and the implications for further research. In the paper, I argue that arts-based mental health projects need to combine multi-disciplinary approaches that embrace complex paradigms, and that a variety of integrated arts approaches may be efficacious in building communities of interest, that in turn can interact, contribute and collaborate together to build good mental health. Many scholars assert that Indigenous peoples across the globe suffer a disproportionate burden of mental illness. Research indicates that colonialism and its associated processes are important determinants of Indigenous peoples’ health internationally. In Canada, despite an abundance of health research documenting inequalities in morbidity and mortality rates for Indigenous peoples, relatively little research has focused on mental health. This paper provides a critical scoping review of the literature related to Indigenous mental health in Canada. We searched eleven databases and two Indigenous health-focused journals for research related to mental health, Indigenous peoples, and Canada, for the years 2006–2016. Over two hundred papers are included in the review and coded according to research theme, population group, and geography. Results demonstrate that the literature is overwhelmingly concerned with issues related to colonialism in mental health services and the prevalence and causes of mental illness among Indigenous peoples in Canada, but with several significant gaps. Mental health research related to Indigenous peoples in Canada overemphasizes suicide and problematic substance use; a more critical use of the concepts of colonialism and historical trauma is advised; and several population groups are underrepresented in research, including Métis peoples and urban or off-reserve Indigenous peoples. The findings are useful in an international context by providing a starting point for discussions, dialogue, and further study regarding mental health research for Indigenous peoples around the world. This paper examines the role of culture and place in recovery from severe mental illness amongst a group of Québécois living in Montreal, Canada. Results indicate that dominant cultural characteristics of Québécois, such as a marked Roman Catholic heritage, use of the French language and a close affiliation with the natural territory of Québec can all play important roles in recovery from severe mental illness. The findings suggest that participants weave together places with cultural, familial and personal meaning to create their own healing landscapes. This paper examines whether low income and subjective financial strain are associated with mental health, as well as whether mastery weakens this association. We analyze three waves of a large sample of Canadians and utilize random and fixed effects regression strategies to assess bias introduced by unobserved time-stable confounders. In random effects models, both low income and subjective financial strain are associated with distress and anger. In fixed effects models that control for all time-stable confounders, the effect of low income is reduced to non-significance for both outcomes. The effect of subjective strain is also reduced in fixed effects models, but remained statistically significant. Sobel tests indicated that the effect of subjective strain on mental health is transmitted through mastery, but this indirect path is modest in magnitude. When interactions are tested, mastery weakens the association between subjective strain and distress, and this effect is robust to the influence of time-stable controls, but mastery does not buffer the subjective strain-anger relationship in either random or fixed-effects models. Finally, moving below the low income threshold increases anger for low mastery individuals, but seems to reduce anger when moving below the low income threshold is coupled with increases in mastery. Collectively, our findings demonstrate the importance of assessing the influence of unobserved time-stable confounders in stress research. Collaboration between child welfare and adult mental health service providers is important to address parental risk factors that may affect child wellbeing. The aim of this paper is to describe findings from a survey which identified barriers and facilitators to collaboration between these two sectors. A semi-structured instrument, adapted from Frederico et al. (2014), was used for data collection. A total of 339 service providers in Ontario, Canada, completed the survey. The collaborative strategies used most frequently were co-working with staff from other services and case conferences; yet, these strategies were only used by just over one half of all respondents. Several barriers and facilitators to collaboration were identified by respondents. To improve collaboration between child welfare and adult mental health services, respondents recommended better clarity of roles and goals, increased information sharing, capacity building across sectors and new models of integrated service delivery. The ultimate intention of seafarer welfare services is for maritime workers to be served in Canada as systematically and effectively as possible while considering the greatest possible sensitivity to their needs. This paper provides an overview of such services available in Canadian ports and includes case studies of the Port of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), and of the Catholic seafarers' ministry, Stella Maris. Two research questions were addressed: 1) where and how is the welfare of foreign seafarers in Canadian ports inadequate, and 2) how can the expertise and resources of those already involved be marshalled to improve support? Existing research on seafarers' welfare was synthesized, seafarers' welfare professionals across Canada consulted through interviews and surveys, and key informants were interviewed in the Port of St. John's, NL. The research findings show that Canadian charities, businesses, government, and labour representatives are united in support of seafarers' welfare. Furthermore, there is a general interest in filling gaps where they are found, particularly through participation in the Canadian National Seafarers' Welfare Board. Welfare organizations also actively promote cooperation, professionalism, and the development of new resources for seafarers' welfare. However, there are still gaps: foreign seafarers are offered a wide range of services in many Canadian ports but internet and enforcement of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006′s standards for shore leave and crew change are still pressing welfare issues. Welfare workers are stretched thin everywhere and some busy ports must make do with the best efforts of shipping agents where welfare workers are absent. In response to these limitations to seafarer welfare supports, we recommend that the Canadian government, as agents active within a maritime nation, and the maritime community take a more active role in supporting seafarers' welfare, including financially and through welfare boards. Urban centres in the US, Britain and Canada have responded to identified visible 'social problems' such addiction, mental health and homelessness by providing some supportive housing for the urban poor and marginalized. While some critics have questioned what supportive housing specifically entails in terms of the built environment, what remains under explored, though a growing area of concern, is the relationship between surveillance and supportive housing for urban residents identified as having addiction and mental health problems - a gap addressed in this paper. Drawing upon qualitative ethnographic observational data we examine some of the measures of control and coercion that are encroaching into social housing primarily established for poor and marginalized people with addiction and mental health problems in the urban centre of Vancouver, Canada. We witnessed three modes of regulation and control, that vary widely, among the residencies observed: physical surveillance technologies; site-specific modes of coercion; police presence and staff surveillance, which all together impact the everyday lives of residents living in low-income and supportive housing. We argue that supportive housing has the potential to provide its intended commitment - safe and secure affordable housing. This paper is based on a qualitative study conducted in a rural community in British Columbia, Canada. Ethnographic methods were used to: (1) to bring youth voice to the literature on emotional distress; and (2) to capture the ways in which context shapes young peoples' experiences of emotional distress within their everyday lives. Our findings demonstrate how socio-structural contextual factors such as the local economy, geographical segregation, racism, ageism, and cutbacks in health and social service programming operate to create various forms of disconnection, and intersect in young peoples' lives to shape their experiences of emotional distress. This paper extends the concept of therapeutic landscapes by investigating how green and blue spaces affect older adult health and wellbeing. We draw on interview data from participants aged 65–86 years old who described their everyday experiences with green and especially blue spaces across Metro Vancouver, Canada. Landscapes embedded with therapeutic qualities included parks, gardens, street greenery, lakes, and the ocean. Interactions with these spaces influenced participants' perceived physical, mental, and social health. Issues of safety, accessibility, and personal perception complicated this relationship. Overall, the findings indicate that nature plays a nuanced and influential role in the everyday lives of older adults. Better understanding how older adults experience health and landscape is critical towards developing everyday contact with nature that can improve quality of life for ageing populations. • The COVID-19 pandemic affects sexual and gender minorities' (SGMs) mental health. • SGMs experience disproportionate mental health outcomes compared to non-SGMs. • SGMs further experience disproportionate substance use impacts. • Pre-existing mental health conditions contribute to mental health impacts for SGMs. This paper examines the mental health and substance use impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic among sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations as compared to non-SGM populations, and identifies risk factors for mental health and substance use impacts among SGM groups. Data were drawn from two rounds of a repeated cross-sectional monitoring survey of 6027 Canadian adults, with Round 1 conducted May 14–19, 2020 and Round 2 conducted September 14–21, 2020. Bivariate cross-tabulations with chi-square tests were utilized to identify differences in mental health and substance use outcomes between SGM and non-SGM groups. Separate multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify risk factors for mental health and substance use outcomes for all SGM respondents. Compared to non-SGM respondents, a greater proportion of SGM participants reported mental health and substance use impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, including deterioration in mental health, poor coping, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, alcohol and cannabis use, and use of substances to cope. Among SGM respondents, various risk factors, including having a pre-existing mental health condition, were identified as associated with mental health and substance use impacts. Contact!Unload , a research-based theatre production, portrays veterans experiencing mental health challenges and overcoming them through therapeutic enactment. It was performed eight times by veteran performers in 2017 for audiences in two Canadian cities comprised of civilians and military-connected personnel and their families (n = 525). Drawing upon qualitative and quantitative data sources, this paper evaluates the immediate and longer-term impacts of Contact!Unload as a knowledge translation intervention for audience members. Our findings suggest that the performance: 1) improved knowledge of mental health concerns and symptoms that some veterans experience when transitioning to civilian life, 2) increased knowledge of the need for mental health supports and care for veterans, 3) sustained impacts on awareness and knowledge six months after the play and 4) sparked dialogue and actions after the show for some audience members. Moreover, theatre was seen as a powerful medium to engage audience members both cognitively and affectively in the topic. Research-based theatre has significant potential as a knowledge translation intervention for mental health topics. The work also points to the untapped potential of using RbT to engage audience members in a mental health literacy intervention. Abstract: Research indicates that the transition to adoptive parenthood can be challenging for many adoptive parents, but that the provision of post-placement services may mitigate these challenges. However, little is known about the specific post-placement service needs of adoptive parents during this transition. This paper describes a pilot project from Ontario, Canada which sought to explore the support needs of adoptive parents in the post-placement period. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine newly placed adoptive parents. Eight of the nine participants were married; two had adopted internationally, five had adopted through the public system in Ontario and the remaining participant utilized private adoption. Through our analysis of the data, we identified two meta-themes: a) challenges and b) facilitators accompanying the transition to adoptive parenthood. Grounded theory methodology was used to develop these themes into a conceptual framework describing the transition to adoptive parenthood. This framework posits that each parent negotiates a particular set of challenges and facilitators associated with their specific adoption experience. In future, this framework can become a tool to assist adoptive parents and practitioners to proactively identify and address potential challenges during the transition to parenthood. Abstract: The paper reviews arguments that associations between small area socio-economic conditions and individual health are likely to vary according to the type of health condition considered. We comment on the importance of longitudinal research to examine how far area conditions predict later health outcomes, and also how far area variations in health may result from selective migration processes predicted by health status. Using data for 1996 and 2002, from the National Population Health Survey of Canada, linked to small area data on social and on material deprivation in the area of residence for 6950 survey respondents at the two time points, we report on analyses to address these questions. The area measures of material and social deprivation were previously developed by Pampalon and colleagues at the Institut National de Santé Publique de Québec and related to the dissemination area matching the informant''s postal code. The health outcomes considered were restriction of activity due to chronic conditions and psychological distress. Our findings suggest that individuals living in materially deprived areas in 2002 were more likely to be affected by health conditions resulting in restriction of activity. Prevalence of psychological distress was higher in areas with greater social deprivation in 2002. Most of these area differences were attenuated when adjustment was made for individual socio-demographic characteristics. Measures recorded in 1996 of individual characteristics and measures of deprivation for area of residence were used to predict change in health outcomes by 2002. Several individual factors (sex, age group, income, household composition) in 1996 were predictive of later health outcomes. After controlling for these individual characteristics the only significant association between health change and area deprivation was with development of restricted activity, which was more common among people who, in 1996, had lived in areas that ranked moderately high on material deprivation. We also report some evidence for selective migration effects, though these mainly seem to operate indirectly via socio-economic characteristics that predict both health outcomes and differential migration patterns. The clearest evidence on this point is for those in with psychological distress in 1996, who were particularly likely to move to an area which was more socially or materially deprived by 2002. Abstract: This paper addresses the principles underlying compulsory community treatment (CCT) and discusses the different provisions in Canada''s twelve jurisdictions. Comparisons with different models of CCT in other countries are also drawn. CCT is not only intended to reduce relapses it is also a "least restrictive" alternative to in-patient detention. Seven of the twelve Canadian mental health acts allow conditional leave from hospital. Two jurisdictions provide community treatment orders, but require two or three previous in-patient admissions. Criteria for CCT, in most jurisdictions, includes that there is a “likelihood of significant mental or physical deterioration”. The requirement for previous hospitalization for CCT in Canada, unlike other countries, precludes CCT for use with first episode patients. Some jurisdictions require consent for CCT. Most jurisdictions explicitly state that the services necessary for the CCT conditions must be available. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper examines the interplay of commercial imperatives and health care legislation in the survival of a privately owned psychiatric hospital in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Using documentary and archival evidence, we show how the Homewood Retreat (later Sanitarium, and eventually Health Centre) was able to respond to and anticipate legislative developments through the agency of successive medical superintendents and the structural positioning of the institution as an inextricably integrated element in local and provincial mental health provision. Our case study is used to draw out wider lessons concerning agency, legislative context and treatment modality in the determination of organizational histories. We conclude by noting the important role of the private sector in ensuring the continued provision of an asylum form of mental health care. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Although a large body of literature has examined the effect of social capital on health and theoretical models suggest a reciprocal relationship between the two variables, there are relatively few studies that have investigated the effect of mental health on social capital. This paper evaluates the impact of mental health on the stock of social capital using data from the cross-sectional 2012 (N = 21,844) and 2002 (N = 31,089) Canadian Community Health Survey – Mental Health editions. Mental health was measured retrospectively as self-rated mental health, past year mental health conditions, and past 30-day psychological distress. Given the reciprocal relationship, we used an instrumental variable approach with family history of mental health problems as the instrument and examined forms of social capital – sense of belonging and workplace social support – that are largely measures of social capital provided by non-family members in the community and workplace. The analysis suggests there are large and significant associations between measures of mental health and both outcomes, which persist in the instrumental variable analyses. These findings highlight the urgent need for policy makers to implement greater prevention and treatment of poor mental health, and provide greater support for individuals with poor mental health so they can build and maintain their social capital. • The causal impact of mental health on social capital has been relatively unexplored. • All measures of mental health were associated with a lower sense of belonging. • Workplace social supports were similarly affected by all measures of mental health. • Instrumental variable analyses suggest the observed effects are causal. • Climate change is a contributor to extreme weather events and natural disasters, which in turn impacts mental health. • The mental health effects of climate change are multifaceted, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and suicide, and anxiety. • Research has consistently demonstrated that specific risk factors (e.g., gender, socioeconomic status and education, pre-existing mental health symptomatology), are associated with increased vulnerability to mental health conditions post-disaster. • There are multiple strategies that must be undertaken by communities to enhance adjustment and coping post-disaster, including enhanced access to care, inter-agency cooperation, enhanced community resiliency, and adequate preparation. Recent research has shown that social integration, involving community integration and social support, can be protective resources for the health of homeless individuals. However, it is not clear how social integration affects health in the transition from homelessness into housing, and subsequent housing retention. This paper examines, through mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, how social integration changes over time, and how these changes relate to housing stability, substance use and mental health outcomes among a sample of homeless individuals experiencing mental illness participating in the At Home/Chez Soi Housing First randomized controlled trial in Canada. Longitudinal quantitative data (baseline, 6, 12, 24 month) and qualitative data (18 month) from the five trial sites (Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver) were examined using mixed models, mediation analyses, and thematic analysis. Social integration (i.e., social network size, social interest, psychological integration) increased over time among study participants, with social network size increasing significantly more among Housing First participants than Treatment as Usual participants. Social network size mediated the effect of the intervention on the percentage of days in stable housing, indicating that the Housing First intervention may have increased participants' social network size, which in turn increased the percentage of days stably housed. No significant mediation of social integration on the effects of the intervention on mental health and substance use outcomes was found.
