The Beas River, located in the Western Himalayan mountainous regions in India, is one of the major tributaries of the Indus River. However, recent changes of precipitation and related climatic teleconnections in this river basin have rarely been investigated yet. In this study, the trend and concentration characteristics of precipitation during1982–2010 are investigated by using Mann–Kendall trend test and two kinds of concentration indices. The climatic teleconnections are explored with the help of cross correlation, wavelet transform and composite analysis, revealing the relationship of precipitation with climatic indices of Indian summer monsoon (ISM), El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The results indicate that: (1) Precipitation of most of the stations increased in the monsoon season while precipitation of all the stations decreased in the non-monsoon seasons. As a result, the annual precipitation of the majority of the stations was on the decrease. (2) A general increase in the precipitation Gini coefficient and precipitation concentration degree (PCD) was detected. Moreover, the precipitation concentration period (PCP) is mainly within the period from May to August, and more PCP occurred in the monsoon months recently. (3) The relationship between monsoon precipitation and ISM is not significant in the Beas River basin. The relationship between precipitation and ENSO in winter is less significant than in the monsoon season, and the relationship of monsoon/winter precipitation with IOD is not as evident as that with ENSO. Abstract Regionalization methods have been extensively discussed as the solution for runoff predictions in ungauged basins (PUB), especially during the PUB decade (2003–2012). At the same time, research topics relevant to climate change appear to be an essential and attractive field for hydrologists in recent decades, because the availability and quality of water resources are strongly affected by climate change. However, it is still unknown whether regionalization methods can be used to predict hydrological impacts of climate change for ungauged catchments or how much uncertainty of future predictions may result from the use of regionalization methods. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the transferability of regionalization methods (i.e. spatial proximity and physical similarity methods, regression method) under changing climate conditions and compare the uncertainty resulting from regionalization methods with that from using climate models. The investigation is based on 108 catchments in Norway, with large variability in climate conditions and geographic characteristics. The study applies a lumped conceptual rainfall-runoff model (WASMOD) with simple structure and six model parameters. Our result shows that (a) the differences in the predictions by the regionalization methods tend to increase in the future, (b) the physical similarity method with parameter option (i.e. the model parameters from the physically-similar donor catchments are first averaged and then used to run the model for the target catchment) shows higher transferability than other methods, (c) the uncertainty contributions from climate models and regionalization methods to future runoff prediction are basin dependent, and (d) the uncertainty of future runoff prediction due to regionalization methods can be higher than that from climate models in low precipitation areas. This study provides insight to the choice of regionalization methods under changing climate conditions and the role of regionalization methods to the uncertainty contributions in future runoff predictions. Abstract Recently, the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) products with high spatial (0.1° × 0.1°) and temporal (half-hourly) resolution have become operationally available. It is of crucial importance to comprehensively evaluate these new products before they are applied extensively. This study focuses on statistical and hydrological evaluations of the latest IMERG (Version 05) products: the near-real-time “Early” run and “Late” run IMERG products (IMERG-E and IMERG-L, respectively), and the post-real-time “Final” run IMERG product (IMERG-F) over the mid-latitude humid Mishui basin in South China during 2014–2015, in comparison with their predecessors, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) products (3B42RT and 3B42V7). The post-real-time IMERG-F presents the best performance among the five satellite precipitation products (SPPs), with the highest daily correlation coefficient (CC) of 0.85 and the lowest daily root-mean square error of 5.58 mm at the basin scale. The near-real-time IMERG-E and IMERG-L demonstrate comparable performance with 3B42V7. In addition, the Taylor diagrams visually demonstrate that the IMERG products are better than the 3B42 products. For hydrological simulations under scenario I (model calibration based on rain gauge observations), the post-real-time IMERG-F performs obviously better than the 3B42V7 does, with a relatively high CC of 0.81, a good Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.63, and an acceptable relative bias of −3.98%. Both the IMERG-E and IMERG-L demonstrate a better performance than the 3B42RT does. For scenario II (model recalibration based on each satellite dataset), the hydrological performances of both the IMERG and 3B42 products are improved. The IMERG-E, especially, demonstrates streamflow simulation performance comparable to that of the 3B42V7, both for the whole simulation period and flood season, indicating the great potential of the latest near-real-time IMERG-E product for flood simulation and prediction. Overall, this systematic evaluation highlights that the latest IMERG products have desirable hydrological utility in the study region. This study will provide useful guidelines for hydrological applications of the new generation SPPs, as well as IMERG algorithm development. Most lumped hydrological models use areal average precipitation data as model input. Though weather-radar-based and satellite-based precipitation estimation methods have been proposed in recent years, the rain gauge is still the most widely used precipitation-measuring tool. Optimal selection of rain gauge number and location will improve the accuracy of areal average precipitation estimations with minimum cost. In this study, the impacts of rain gauge density and distribution on lumped hydrological modelling uncertainty with different catchment sizes are analysed. To this end, the performances of a lumped hydrological model, the Xinanjiang model, in a densely gauged river basin, the Xiangjiang River basin, and its sub-basins under different gauge density and distribution are compared. First, seven levels of rain gauge density are defined. For each density level, several samples of different rain gauge distributions are randomly selected. Then, the areal average precipitation of each sample is estimated and used as input to the Xinanjiang model. Finally, the model is calibrated using the shuffled complex evolution (SCE-UA) algorithm, and model uncertainty is evaluated via the Bayesian method. The results show that 1) imperfect precipitation inputs measured by a sparse and irregular rain gauge network will lead to substantial uncertainty in model parameter estimation and flood simulation; 2) the impacts of imperfect precipitation estimates on model efficiency can be reduced to some extent through the adjustment of model parameters; 3) modelling uncertainty is reduced by increasing the rain gauge density or optimizing the rain gauge distribution pattern; and 4) the improvement in lumped model efficiency is no longer significant when the rain gauge density exceeds a certain threshold, but a further increase in rain gauge density will reduce model parameter uncertainty and the width of the runoff confidence interval. Summary In recent years, the Poyang Lake basin is in a prolonged drought which has placed immense pressure on the water resources utilization. In this paper, we explore the spatial and temporal distributions of extreme droughts in the Poyang Lake basin by using the methods of SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) and EOF (Empirical Orthogonal Function) for the period of 1956–2009, which are influenced by regional precipitation anomalies and river–lake interaction due to water impounding of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). The results show that: (1) the Poyang Lake basin experienced six extreme droughts during the past 60 years, which lead to decreases in streamflow from five tributary rivers down to the Poyang Lake. The droughts in the 1960s and the 2000s were the most serious ones. However, there was an increasing trend of streamflow in the upper and middle Yangtze in the 1960s, and a decreasing trend appeared in the 2000s. The decline of streamflow in the upper Yangtze reaches has lowered the water level of lower Yangtze River which has caused more outflow from the Poyang Lake to the Yangtze River; (2) the operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has altered the seasonal pattern of flow regimes in the Poyang Lake and significantly reduced the water level in the lower Yangtze River during the TGD impounding period from late September to early November; and (3) the conjunction of extreme droughts in the Poyang Lake and the upper Yangtze reaches coincided with the impounding of the TGD is the main cause of the low water level in the Poyang Lake. Although the impact of the recent droughts in the Poyang Lake and upper Yangtze reaches has played a crucial role in the low water level of Poyang Lake, more attention should be paid to its sensitivity to the influence of the large dam-induced changes in the interaction between river and lake, particularly during impounding periods. Summary: In this paper, the trends of the annual streamflow and precipitation and cross correlations between them were analyzed in nine large river basins of China during 1956–2005. The results indicate that: (1) the annual mean streamflow decreases in arid and semi-arid regions of north China; however, increasing trends occur in south and Southwest China; (2) the annual streamflow and precipitation exhibit reasonable correlation in nine large river basins except those located in inland areas. The annual streamflow over most areas of China is fed by precipitation; however, the decline in streamflow is faster than the decreases of precipitation since 1970s in the arid and semi-arid regions of north China. The relationship between the annual precipitation and streamflow presents a non-stationary state in north China. This non-stationary relationship is strongly influenced by both human activities and precipitation changes; (3) a significant increase of water use might be the major factor responsible for the steeper decline in streamflow than in precipitation in Haihe River, Yellow River and Songliao River basins in north China. In inland river areas, increase of water use and actual evapotranspiration might result in decline in streamflow although precipitation has an increase tendency. This paper sheds light on the non-stationary relationship between annual precipitation and streamflow and possible underlying causes, which will be helpful for a better understanding of the changes of precipitation and streamflow in China at large scale and in other regions of the world. Abstract Editors of several journals in the field of hydrology met during the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union—EGU in Vienna in April 2017. This event was a follow-up of similar meetings held in 2013 and 2015. These meetings enable the group of editors to review the current status of the journals and the publication process, and to share thoughts on future strategies. Journals were represented at the 2017 meeting by their editors, as shown in the list of authors. Uncertainty estimation of climate change impacts on hydrology has received much attention in the research community. The choice of a global climate model (GCM) is usually considered as the largest contributor to the uncertainty of climate change impacts. The temporal variation of GCM uncertainty needs to be investigated for making long-term decisions to deal with climate change. Accordingly, this study investigated the temporal variation (mainly long-term) of uncertainty related to the choice of a GCM in predicting climate change impacts on hydrology by using multi-GCMs over multiple continuous future periods. Specifically, twenty CMIP5 GCMs under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios were adapted to adequately represent this uncertainty envelope, fifty-one 30-year future periods moving from 2021 to 2100 with 1-year interval were produced to express the temporal variation. Future climatic and hydrological regimes over all future periods were compared to those in the reference period (1971–2000) using a set of metrics, including mean and extremes. The periodicity of climatic and hydrological changes and their uncertainty were analyzed using wavelet analysis, while the trend was analyzed using Mann-Kendall trend test and regression analysis. The results showed that both future climate change (precipitation and temperature) and hydrological response predicted by the twenty GCMs were highly uncertain, and the uncertainty increased significantly over time. For example, the change of mean annual precipitation increased from 1.4% in 2021–2050 to 6.5% in 2071–2100 for RCP4.5 in terms of the median value of multi-models, but the projected uncertainty reached 21.7% in 2021–2050 and 25.1% in 2071–2100 for RCP4.5. The uncertainty under a high emission scenario (RCP8.5) was much larger than that under a relatively low emission scenario (RCP4.5). Almost all climatic and hydrological regimes and their uncertainty did not show significant periodicity at the P = .05 significance level, but their temporal variation could be well modeled by using the fourth-order polynomial. Overall, this study further emphasized the importance of using multiple GCMs for studying climate change impacts on hydrology. At present, climate change has brought huge challenges to vegetation and ecosystems. As the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is a sensitive area of global climate change, the dynamic assessment of its ecological vulnerability is very important. In order to better quantify the relative size of the ecological vulnerability of the QTP, this study starts from the background characteristics and dynamic change process of the ecosystem, by fitting the vegetation index net primary productivity (NPP) and the temperature, precipitation and meteorological elements. The coefficients of autocorrelation multiple linear regression are used to construct an ecological vulnerability model from the three dimensions of "exposure-sensitivity-elasticity" to conduct a dynamic assessment of ecological vulnerability. Based on the evaluation results, from 2000 to 2015, the ecologically fragile areas were mainly distributed in the eastern and central areas of the QTP. The ecological fragility of the western region showed obvious discontinuities, with high and low vulnerabilities staggered. The three ecosystems of forest, grassland, and bare land have significant differences in their ecological vulnerability to climate change, showing a clear positive correlation in the three dimensions of exposure, sensitivity, and resilience, but in terms of the contribution rates of the three dimensions. The performance is relatively similar, and the relative relationship between the three dimensions is relatively balanced. The longitude and precipitation of the sample points have a greater impact on ecological vulnerability and its three dimensions, and the impact of precipitation on ecological vulnerability is more significant than that of temperature. Abstract: Projections of changes in climate extreme are important in assessing the potential impacts of climate change on social and natural systems. This article presents future projections of climate extremes in the Tibetan Plateau constructed from ensembles of coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) contributing to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR4), under a range of emission scenarios. The extremes of temperature and precipitation are described by seven indices, namely, the frost day (FD), percentage of nights when Tmin >90th percentile (TN90), consecutive dry days (CDD), annual count of days when precipitation >=10mm (R10), maximum 5-day precipitation total (R5D), simple daily intensity index (SDII), and annual total precipitation when precipitation >95th percentile (R95T). Results indicate that frost days decrease over the Tibetan Plateau in the 21st century. More frequent warm nights are also projected in the plateau. The increases of these temperature extremes under A2 and A1B scenarios are more pronounced than under B1. Heavy precipitation events for single days and pentads are projected to increase in their intensity over most parts of Tibetan Plateau. CDD, R10, R5D, R95T and SDII collectively suggest more extreme precipitation in the region (2011–2020). In addition, impacts of climate extremes changes on local water resources and fragile ecosystem are discussed as an extension of this article. The findings will be beneficial to project regional responses in this unique region to global climate change, and then to formulate regional strategies against the potential menaces of climate change. • A dynamic three-stage blending scheme is developed to simultaneously correct precipitation occurrence and intensity. • A new daily 0.25° precipitation dataset over mainland China is produced by merging four multi-satellite/reanalysis products. • Different data merging methods are systematically evaluated in 238 catchments over China. • Our developed approach can facilitate hydrological modelling by substantially improving the KGE of simulated streamflow. Satellite-retrieved and atmospheric reanalysis precipitation can bridge the spatiotemporal gaps of in-situ gauging networks, but estimation biases can limit their reliable applications in hydrological monitoring and modelling. To correct precipitation occurrence and intensity simultaneously, this study develops a three-stage blending approach to integrate three multi-satellite precipitation datasets (IMERG Final, TMPA 3B42V7 and PERSIANN-CDR), the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis product and a gauge dataset within a dynamic framework. Firstly, the systematic biases of the four members were individually corrected by combining the local intensity scaling and ratio bias correction methods. Then, the "state weights" used for determining wet/dry events were optimized by evaluating a score function of the four bias-corrected members. Thirdly, the "intensity weights" were optimized using the cuckoo search (CS) algorithm and the Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) method, respectively. The three-stage blending approach produced dynamic weights varying both spatially and temporally, and the performance was thoroughly evaluated over mainland China. Results show that the three-stage dynamic scheme performs better than individual datasets and two-stage blending methods in terms of all eight statistical metrics, and the CS algorithm outperforms the BMA method in the third stage. By randomly sampling validation sites using K-fold experiments, the developed algorithm also demonstrates a superior performance in ungauged regions. After interpolating and normalizing blending parameters of all gauges to entire domain using ordinary kriging, a new blended precipitation dataset with a daily 0.25° scale was produced. Four hydrological models are forced by blended and primary precipitations in 238 catchments over China, further confirming that the developed approach can facilitate hydrological modelling demonstrated by improving the Kling-Gupta efficiency of simulated streamflow by 12–35%. • A framework is proposed to investigate the drought hazard propagation. • Drought hazards are quantified by the most-likely scenarios and uncertainty envelope. • Drought hazards tend to ascend from meteorological to hydrological droughts. As a major weather-driven disaster, drought can be assessed from meteorological to hydrological aspects. Although the propagation from meteorological to hydrological droughts has received lots of attention in recent years, the hazard transferability in such a propagation process has been less investigated. In this study, we propose a framework with the incorporation of copulas and a drought hazard propagation ratio (DHPR) to examine the drought propagation process, particularly to investigate the accompanying hazard transferability. Three catchments with few human activities located in two major river basins of China (i.e., the Yangtze River basin and the Yellow River basin) with different hydro-climatic conditions are selected as case studies. First, the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and the standardized runoff index (SRI) are calculated to measure meteorological and hydrological droughts for the 1961–2014 period. Subsequently, the drought duration and severity are identified using the theory of run, and then the most-likely scenarios and the corresponding uncertainty ellipse based on copulas are incorporated to appraise meteorological and hydrological drought hazards. Finally, a novel concept of DHPR is proposed to evaluate the hazard transferability from meteorological to hydrological drought. The results show that (1) the drought propagation generally shows lengthened duration, amplified severity, and the time-delay phenomenon among these catchments; (2) drought hazards represented by the most-likely scenarios of duration and severity and the uncertainty ellipse tend to ascend based on the bivariate frequency analysis; and (3) the hazard transferability is stable from meteorological to hydrological droughts, as indicated by the almost unchanged DHPR ranging between 1 and 2 for the most-likely scenarios and varying between 2 and 4 for the uncertainty ellipse under different return periods. The above results imply firm and robust correlations between meteorological and hydrological drought hazards, which can provide a supplement for revealing the drought propagation mechanism and would benefit drought risk assessment.
